Deserving Randall Middle School’s Teacher Is Appreciated By Thousands

By Kathi Hayes

By Nick Nahas

Randall Middle School (RMS) teacher Christopher Wikfors was one of the thirty top teachers to receive recognition from Norwegian Cruise Line’s ‘Giving Joy Campaign’ out of nearly 50,000 nominated in the U.S. and Canada. In April, Wikfors was dually nominated by an RMS parent, whose child was his former student, and by his biggest supporter, his mother. Wikfors suffered a near death traumatic brain injury as a freshman in college. He defied all odds to become a dedicated RMS honors math teacher, sharing his love and knowledge with young minds. Wikfors received an overwhelming 2,685 votes over the month long campaign. When asked to submit reasons why he deserved to win, he turned to people who could give firsthand, honest answers, his former students. After the top thirty winners were announced, Norwegian Cruise Lines invited them and a guest to Seattle, WA for a weekend of celebration at the Hard Rock Seattle. The top three winners were announced based on the following: 1) the relevancy of their submission to the contest theme - giving joy; 2) the nominees’ lasting impact on their students; and 3) content and originality. The campaign generated over 46,000 nominations and 1.43 million votes. Wikfors said, “The three winners were true examples of heroes in and out of the classroom.” The evening was filled with a room of grateful, deserving teachers. “It was an amazing night, where they truly made 30 teachers feel like rock stars,” added Wikfors.

All thirty educators received a 7-day cruise voucher for two aboard any of Norwegian Cruise Line’s destinations. Wikfors and his wife, Jaime, plan to travel to Alaska with their two sons next summer. Wikfors is very appreciative of every vote he received. “The passion I have for being a teacher comes directly from the relationships I build with my students and their families. As teachers, our main goal is to make a lasting impact on all of our kids, in and out of the classroom, beyond the lessons we create and curriculum we go through. After receiving such incredible support, it's made me feel like I have made that positive impact on much of this community. I'm extremely grateful for such awesome kids and a community that values what we do.” Wikfors sees how valuable and positive this experience has been for not only himself, but for all teachers nationwide. “As we hear about the teacher shortages, this contest showed me that teachers are still appreciated and is just another example of the true value people see in teachers and the impact they have on our future,” said Wikfors. Tigris Opens At Busch Gardens® Tampa Bay To ‘Roarin’ Reviews Tigris, Busch Gardens® Tampa Bay’s newest roller coaster, opened in April to rave reviews from roller coaster aficionados. It is Florida’s tallest launch coaster; racing along more than 1,800 ft. of steel track designed to mimic the awe-inspiring agility of the world’s largest and most powerful cat – the tiger. I never say no to an opportunity to try a new roller coaster, and at the time, sitting buckled in the front row of the 18seat car, all I could see was a track ahead of me going straight up. I could see nothing beyond. As I stared into the ‘eye of the Tigris’ and contemplated what was to come, the coaster quickly bolted out of the station, and I didn’t have any more time to think about it. Adrenaline took over and I could barely hear myself screaming (in delight). Tigris is quite different from the traditional roller coaster experience. For one, there is no time to think about the ascent as you do on traditional coasters. Its launch is immediate and quick up to almost the top of the first part of the track - and then it stops - just before

it hurtles back through the boarding station and up another hill in the other direction. It then falls back, going through the boarding station once again before setting off on its wild journey, twisting through its inverted heartline roll; roaring to heights of 150 ft. As it reaches the top, the coaster actually slows down as it goes through the twists, giving you a great view of the park below and then of the sky above you – right before careening down another hill with looping twists and at great speed. The coaster reaches a top speed of 62 miles per hour. Although it is not the fastest roller coaster in the world, while you are riding, you feel that it might well be. If you are a coaster enthusiast, this is a must-try because of its unique components. Tigris is the ninth coaster in the park’s collection, solidifying Busch

‘Dr. Google’ Is Not A Real Doctor

By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH

Surveys and research indicate that approximately 40 percent of pet owners go online for information before they take their pets to the veterinarian. What's more, the statistics are strikingly similar for people, who often surf the 'Net before they visit their own doctors. In the pet community, this can be positive, leading to better conversations with veterinarians about the symptoms pets are exhibiting and also can promote a better understanding of not only the health issues, but also the best course of treatment for each pet. One of the top risks of relying on the internet for medical treatment is the overload of information available. A recent Google search for the words ‘pet health’ brought up 1.9 billion results in less than three seconds. Much of this information is not ‘fact-checked’ or vetted, so you actually could cause serious harm to your pet if you treat them without expert veterinary guidance. Product reviews that have no regulatory oversight for safety or effectiveness, as well as anecdotal or home remedies, also can be risky. A pet owner may not be aware that Tylenol can kill a cat and harm a dog's liver, while Advil can damage a pet's kidneys. Still another risk is that a pet owner may decide to wait a day or two to see if the pet improves, which can lead to the condition worsening and ongoing-and unnecessarily-suffering, as well as costly diagnostics, lengthy

treatment, prolonged recovery or worse. There is a well-known case in veterinary circles about a pet owner who gave her pet a penny because ‘Dr. Google’ reported that it would kill worms. This was a few days after the veterinarian had diagnosed and treated the dog for worms. When the pet later presented with a blood disorder, the veterinarian took an X-ray and found the penny. Fortunately, the pet survived after treatment and a very expensive surgery. Another example, on the lighter side, is the pet owner who brought a new female puppy to her vet. Then told it was a male, the owner said her breeder said the dog was female. When shown the puppy's obvious male ‘appendage,’ the pet owner said she had Googled ‘female puppy with a lump on its belly,’ and ‘Dr. Google’ had diagnosed the puppy with an umbilical hernia. The bottom line is this: Veterinarians have dedicated many years to their schooling and training and, as a result, have developed an expertise in veterinary medicine, while ‘Dr. Google’ does nothing more than send pet owners to various web pages that may or may not have accurate information. The veterinarian still needs to perform a thorough physical examination, but can then have an informed discussion of diagnostic and treatment options, leading to a better overall experience for everyone and, most importantly, a healthier outcome for your pet.

Local Resident Is In Need Of A Helping Paw From A Service Dog

By Taylor Wells

Crystal Hook needs help to get the service dog that will make her life easier. You can help her by attending the fundraiser, donating online or through mailing a check in her name.

Local Resident Crystal Hook, age 28, was born with developmental delays, is nonverbal and is 90 percent blind. She has trouble with everyday life because her disabilities, such as having tantrums over walking or going to the restroom, and they have left her without friends due to being unable to connect well with others. Hook is need of someone to help her through daily problems and give her the warmth and comfort of companionship, so what better than man’s best friend? A service dog, will not only assist Hook with her blindness and mobility problems, it will also be a source of stability and emotional support for her. She might be also able to form new connections with people due to her service dog acting as a social bridge. Her mother, Gerri Schulz, wishes to get a facilitated guide dog through 4 Paws For Ability, a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization seeking to provide disabled children and veterans with quality service dogs and wants to educate the public on

the use of service dogs in public places. However, service dogs come at a hefty price; in this case, $17,000. For her daughter to get the service dog she needs, Schulz seeks donations from the community. On April 29, Chipotle at 103 Brandon Town Center in Brandon held a fundraiser for Hook’s cause. Thirty-three percent of all proceeds from people who said they were supporting Hook or had the fundraiser flyer went to 4 Paws For Ability. On Monday, June 24 from 4-10 p.m., there will be another fundraiser at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant located at 13006 S. US 301 in Riverview. Be sure to present the fundraiser flyer (printed or on your mobile device) so that 10 percent of your food purchases will be donated to Service Dog For Crystal Hook. You can find a copy of the flyer at https://www.facebook.com/events/406465 840199733/?active_tab=discussion. Schulz said she wants to help her daughter get out in the community. “The dog would be there in case she ends up having not a very good day like most of use usually do,” she added. “The dog would be there for support and for guidance to help her out…the dog would be her eyes to be able to see.” To help Hook, you can visit https://4pawsforability.org/crystal-hook/ and donate at https://4pawsforability.org/donate-now/. Make sure to put Hook’s name in the donation; the instructions on how are on www.authorize.net. You can also mail a check with Hook’s name on the memo line to: 4 Paws For Ability, In Honor of Crystal Hook, 253 Dayton Ave., Xenia, Ohio 45385.

Weathering Hurricane Season Takes Good Planning And Preparation Hurricanes are among nature's most powerful and destructive storms. On average, 12 tropical storms, six of which become hurricanes, form over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea or the Gulf of Mexico during the hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30 each year. Significant impacts are not only caused by major hurricanes so do not let the strength of it be the only factor when planning for the storm. Since 2010, Category 1 hurricanes have caused 175 direct deaths and over $100 billion in damage in the U.S. The County Emergency Management stresses not to focus on the exact forecasted track and listen to local officials. For more information, go to weather.gov and click on the Tampa Bay area. Hurricane names for Atlantic storms this year include Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dorian, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy.

It is recommended that you clean and fill bathtubs and sinks before a storm so you will have extra clean water. Hillsborough County Emergency managers urge residents to prepare for the worst by having a plan before a hurricane or tropical storm strikes. Here are four steps to help with your planning: Step 1: Put together a plan by discussing these four questions with your family, friends or household to start your emergency plan: shelter plan, evacuation route, a family/household communication plan and also how you will receive emergency alerts and warnings. Step 2: Consider specific needs in your household. As you prepare your plan, tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need

assistance. Keep in mind the different ages of members within your household, responsibilities for assisting others, locations frequented, dietary needs, medical needs including prescriptions and equipment, disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment, languages spoken, cultural and religious considerations, pets or service animals and households with school-aged children. All five storm surge fatalities in Hurricane Michael last year were over the age of 60 years. Have a plan to assist the elderly and others most vulnerable. Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan. You can download and fill out a plan from www.fema.gov/medialibrary/assets/documents/133447 or use them as a guide to create your own. Step 4: Practice your plan with your family/household. Visit www.ready.gov/make-a-plan for more information.

Storms with extensive rain and high winds, such as tropical storms and hurricanes, can cause severe damage and create hazardous conditions such as fallen trees and other types of dangerous debris including downed power lines, broken glass, small pieces of buildings, commercial signs, and road signs. After the storm passes, residents should be extremely careful as they sort through the wreckage to assess the damage. Always be careful when entering a damaged building. If there is serious structural damage, contact local officials before entering. Report downed power lines or gas leaks. Keep electricity

Avoid standing water as it may contain fecal matter, bacteria and viruses. Do not drive through moving or standing water. Water as shallow as two ft. deep can disable most vehicles. Nonfunctioning traffic signals should be treated as four-way stops. Avoid downed power lines; always assume they are live. Watch for workers repairing surfaces and follow all directional instructions and detour signs. Over half of the water-related fatalities during the 2016-18 hurricane seasons were vehicle-related. Creekside Church To Construct Multimillion Dollar Campus On Lithia Pinecrest By Foundation Christian AcademyBy Amanda Boston

On the morning of Sunday, April 28, Creekside Church of Christ broke ground on its property located on Lithia Pinecrest Rd. A ceremony was held commemorating the next step as the plan for the multimillion dollar campus becomes palpable. Formerly known as Bell Shoals Church of Christ, the church changed its name in preparation of its move from Bell Shoals Ave. to Lithia Pinecrest Rd. The new church campus will be located adjacent to Foundation Christian Academy, which was founded by Creekside Church in 1992. The groundbreaking ceremony was well attended by the church’s past, present and future leaders. The day began with a worship service in Foundation Christian Academy’s gymnasium and ended with an outdoor ceremony that included prayer, song and stories from church leaders. "We've been planning this for years, and God has opened many doors that now allow us to break ground,” said Rex Dutton, the Pulpit Minister. “The campus style complex will include an office and benevolence building, an education complex, a family life center and a worship center. This is truly going to be 'A Place for Everybody.' We want to make sure the campus benefits and touches every person in this community."

Since its establishment in 1973, the church has flourished—thus prompting the need for its first expansion in 1990. Nearly two decades later, the Creekside Church of Christ moves forward with its first phase in the construction featuring multi-purpose facilities designed to host youth programs, community events, charity benefits, benevolence outreaches and more. The church intends to share these additional facilities with the community. The construction project is divided into three phases, and the first phase is scheduled to be completed in a year. Deb Dutton, a church member who attended the ceremony, said, "After attending at Bell Shoals Church of Christ for the past 22 years and having had a dream to move to Lithia Pinecrest for about 20 of those, today was filled with excitement, anticipation and joy.” She continued, “We have a beautifully diverse congregation that love each other very much and who are excited about meeting the needs of the community and the school that shares the property. This move has been a God-led journey every step of the way." Currently, Creekside Church of Christ meets at 2908 Bell Shoals Rd. The church hopes to be worshiping at its new location this time next year. More information about the church can be found at www.bellshoalscoc.org or by calling 685-0750.

Non-Surgical Shoulder Recovery The shoulder joint is one of the more complicated joints of the body. It consists of the humeral head, which sits on the glenoid fossa, much like a golf ball on a tee. This gives the shoulder its range of motion, but in turn, it can be very unstable. To combat this, the shoulder has 17 muscles that insert into it. These muscles and ligaments, when properly utilized, allow for smooth, controlled movements without any pain. Unfortunately, when shoulder muscles are not working properly one starts to experience pain.

Shoulder Pain The most common causes of shoulder pain is from overuse, repetitive movements or poor posture (i.e., mechanical in nature). These can lead to pain in the shoulder girdle, upper arm, lower arm and even down to the hand. Shoulder pain is often described as achy, dull, sharp, numb and/or tingling and varies in intensity. The pain can range anywhere from minimal to debilitating. This is because the nerves that innervate the arm originate from your neck before coming together to make up the brachial plexus, a network of nerves in your shoulder area. These nerves then continue all the way down your arm to your fingers. The shoulder is a very complicated joint and that is why it is so important to have a proper assessment. At Motion ChiroTherapy, you will be given a thorough medical history and physical examination to make sure you receive proper diagnosis and treatment. The good news is that most of the shoulder pain patients at Motion ChiroTherapy get better quickly with conservative care (without drugs, injections, surgery) in a few weeks or months (for severe cases).

To mark the occasion, Warrior Games athletes and coaches, will gather with USSOCOM and community leaders in downtown Tampa for sports and equipment demonstrations, including a wheelchair basketball exhibition and a demonstration by the ParaCommandos, USSOCOM’s premier aerial parachute demonstration team. Attendees will also hear from General Raymond A. Thomas III, Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. For more information, visit DODWarriorGames.com.

Brandon Adult-Living Residents And Young Children Benefit From ‘Hope’s Therapy’

By Franka Potter

Nancy Wolf at age 27 with her two sons.

What is the secret to turning 102 years young? If you ask Nancy Wolf, who celebrated her birthday on May 9, she will tell you it was all the years she lived on a ranch in Boynton Beach, Florida. “We raised cattle, chickens, and turkeys and grew our own vegetables,” Nancy answered. Nancy was born in 1917 when a postage stamp was 2 cents, the Chicago White Sox won the World Series and the U.S. entered WWI. She was born in Columbia, South Carolina and was the youngest of six children. After her mother died when she was a baby, Nancy’s father moved her and her two older siblings with him to Miami. Nancy married when she was 16 years old and by age 21, she had given birth to two sons. When the U.S. entered WWII in 1939, Nancy began working for the Defense Department on their military airplanes in Miami. At the young age of 27, Nancy became a widow. Two years later she married Charles Wolf and moved to a

ranch in Boynton Beach. She and her husband had another son and raised the three boys on the ranch. Nancy and Charles loved to dance. “We were very active dancers and enjoyed modern square dancing and line dancing,” Nancy shared. “I was also a roller-skater, back in the day.” Nancy shared a memorable experience when she met Babe Ruth while both were in the waiting room at a doctor’s office in N. Miami Beach. For the past several years Nancy has resided at The Bridges Assisted Living Community in Riverview to be near her son David. She keeps a busy schedule at The Bridges attending musical performances, Coffee Club and shopping trips. She enjoys her nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The Bridges Assisted Living Community is located at 11202 Dewhurst Dr. in Riverview. For more information, please visit https://bridgesretirement.com/.

G ET THE DIRT WITH FLORIDA YARD EXPERT

Lynn Barber, Hillsborough County Extension

Limitations To Lazy Gardening; Save Time And Dollars Last month, my article covered how you can have a beautiful garden while maintaining a lazy gardener lifestyle. This month it is about the limitations to lazy gardening. Mulch: Takes a little work to put it down but saves a lot of time and effort in the long run. Regulates soil temperature, adds organic value, inhibits weeds, and retains soil moisture. Pine bark, pine straw/needles, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca and leaves are good options. Cypress is not because when cypress stands are cut down for mulching, the habitat of native birds and animals is destroyed. Fertilizing: Use slow release fertilizer every three to four months per label. To be really lazy, do not fertilize until you are sure of light rain for activation. Waterbased fertilizers leach through the soil after rain or irrigation. The University of Florida recommends fertilizing turfgrass two to three times per year. Leaving grass clippings on your turf means you can decrease one fertilization needing one to two, saving you both time and dollars. Why Prune? Reasons to prune include training the plant to grow in a certain direction and improving health by removing diseased stems, which opens the interior space, creating better air circulation. Pruning also increases flowering, allowing for bigger fruit on some types and more abundant foliage. It can also restrict growth and keep the plant in the boundary of available space. And, you can deadhead to reduce pruning. War on Weeds: A weed is the wrong plant in the right place, right plant/wrong place, or a plant with nine lives. Using mulch (depth of two to three inches after it settles) helps. If you chose to fight the weed war, you can cover weeds with newspapers to smother them and/or point, aim, and squeeze with an environmentally-friendly weed killer spray. Pests: Biting, Sucking and Chewing! We have aphids, caterpillars, slugs, snails, scale and spider mites. Less than one per cent of all bugs are bad bugs. “When we kill off the natural enemies of a pest, we inherit their work,” said Professor Carl Huffaker, Ph.D. (entomology/ecolo-

gy). The first step, however, is to properly identify the insect to be sure it is a pest versus a beneficial insect. If you must, use a nonchemical and least toxic product. Spot treat plants as needed, not the entire landscape. Lazy Pest Management (LPM) Alternatives: Murder by Hand Methods: Use two pinching fingers to squish pests; hard spray with water; and/or prune off infested sections and place those sections in your household trash, not your yard waste which could be recycled elsewhere. For info on non-chemical solutions, go to: https://ffl.ifas.ufl.edu/ffl/managing-yard-pests.html. Inefficient Irrigation: If you have an inground irrigation system, do you have broken heads, plant or other materials blocking the spray pattern, and/or a rain shut-off device that does not work? Do you have program A, B and C set to run subsequently? Are the times set for each irrigation zone appropriate? Is your water bill for more than 20,000 gallons of water per month? If yes, you should talk to Paula Staples, 744-5519 x54142, to see how she may be able to help you decrease your water usage. Right Plant, Wrong Place: You now have the ‘opportunity’ to move the right plant to the right place in your landscape or take the time and expense of replacing it after it dies. Site conditions are very important when making plant selections. Consideration should be given to light (sun/shade), soil pH and texture, water, wind and other conditions. An invasive plant is never the right plant in any place. Not sure if it’s invasive, go to UF/IFAS Assessment of Non-Native Plants in Florida’s Natural Areas: https://assessment.ifas.ufl.edu/. Rewards of laziness: Reading, golfing, sleeping, cooking, crafting, outings with family and friends, more gardening, attending an Extension workshop…your choice! For info, contact the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Hillsborough County, 744-5519, located at 5339 CR 579 in Seffner, or visit http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/hillsborough/ or www.facebook.com/HCFFL/.

Free Water Safety Lessons At The YMCA

As a leader in drowning prevention, the YMCAs of Tampa Bay are teaming up with the Florida Blue Foundation and the YMCA of the Suncoast is joining forces with the Juvenile Welfare Board to offer free water safety lessons from May until August. Thanks to both generous supporters, the Safety Around Water (visit www.tampaymca.org/programs/swimming/water-safety/) program is free and open to all 3 to 12-year-old beginners and nonswimmers in the community. During the 4-day course, certified instructors teach kids a sequenced set of skills that will reduce the risk of drowning and give them confidence in and around water.

Participants must be present on the first day of class and bring their own swimsuit and towel. A YMCA membership is NOT required; however, due to limited space, preregistration is required at these participating Ys: Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA (all family locations including Campo, North Brandon, Spurlino and Camp Cristina) which will hold the program Tuesday to Friday, May 28–31 and Monday to Thursday, August 5-8. Boulevard Salon Celebrates 10 Years With Specials On Services, Prizes & More For the last 10 years, Boulevard Salon in Brandon has redefined the salon experience through its internationally trained staff by offering individuals the latest in every aspect of hair artistry. In addition, it also provides the best esthetician, massage therapists, nail technicians, permanent make-up artists and more in Hillsborough County. Boulevard Salon opened in 2009. Before this came into fruition, owner Kathy Hegenauer had established the first day spa in this county called The Salon and Spa. Dynamic Duo; Caba And Saladino Team Up At The High School And College Levels Bloomingdale seniors Myles Caba and Nico Saladino have shared a special bond both as teammates and friends since they were 11 years old. They first played against each other at the South Brandon Little League and later played together for the Hornets’ AAU team. Caba also played for the South Brandon Little League team with Saladino’s younger brother, Noah Saladino, that was coached by Tony Saladino, lll The team fell one game short of making it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. They did not think that they would be teammates again, as they both went their own separate ways for high school. The team made it to the regional finals in his freshman campaign, but came up a little bit short against powerhouse Venice. As fate would have it, Caba and Saladino’s paths would once again converge when Saladino decided to transfer to Bloomingdale in the 2017 off-season. “I knew he played a big role in pitching, and I was excited to play with him (Caba) again,” said Saladino. In the 2017-2018 season, both Caba and Saladino played crucial roles on a Bulls team that won its first district championship since 2007. Caba began the Saladino fields a ball from shortstop. When the season ended, Caba was named the Most Valuable Pitcher by his teammates and Saladino was named Team MVP. Later that off-season, the pair found out that they would once again be teammates at the next level when they signed on to play at South Florida State College. “I was like, what are the odds of that happening,” said Caba. “It’s cool to be teammates with him this long. It’s been awesome, I can’t complain.” In the 2019 season, Caba had once again taken over the reigns as the team’s ace, leading the team in innings pitched with 56.1. He has a 6-2 record, with a 1.62 ERA and 64 strikeouts. Saladino started the season injured due to a broken collarbone in the offseason. He has regained his form, throwing 24.1 innings with a 1.44 ERA and 17 strikeouts. “He’s definitely a captain, he keeps our team together and into the games even when he’s not pitching,” said Saladino. “Every time he pitches, you know what you’re going to get out of him. I like how he just attacks and never keeps us defenders bored out there. It always fun to play behind him.” “These past two years at Bloomingdale are my best memories of playing with him (Caba), seeing him pitch and dominate and winning at districts with him and all that,” said Saladino. “It’s been fun.” The Bulls lost in the regional quarterfinals to Plant 2-1, ending Caba and Saladino’s senior campaign. They would like the chemistry to continue at the next level. “Hopefully, he and I both have opportunities to play on the same field when I’m on the mound and he’s at shortstop,” said Caba. “Hopefully, we get to have the chance because I feel like he’s somebody that’s pretty valuable to me when I’m on the mound.”

More than 17,000 schools were ranked on six factors based on performance on state-required tests, graduation rates and how well they prepare students for college. The high schools were ranked statewide and nationally, along with a separate category for the best magnet programs. Plant High School in South Tampa remained at the top of the list in Hillsborough Schools for the third year in a row, ranked #36 in the state and #582 nationally. Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, Newsome High School in Lithia, Sickles High School in Citrus Park, Robinson High School in South Tampa and Tampa Bay Technical High School in Northeast

Tampa were all in the top 100 in Florida. Twenty Hillsborough schools earned a U.S. News Best High Schools badge, which is widely recognized as a symbol of excellence in education. This year’s rankings are based on a more in-depth analysis than in the past. “I am thrilled for every high school in our district,” said Superintendent Jeff Eakins. “Students should be proud of their hard work and determination as they are outperforming many other students across the country. The critical work by our district’s teachers and staff is key to the success of our students as they graduate and then go on to college or a career. Our entire community should celebrate this news.” Last year, Hillsborough Schools set another all-time graduation rate record of 85.8%, continuing towards our district’s goal of a 90% graduation rate by the year 2020. Life Size Ark Encounter Offers An Epic Family Adventure In Kentucky By Jeff Hoening

We’ve all heard Christian friends return from a trip to Israel and remark something like "it really makes the Bible come alive seeing the sights where the biblical events took place." The Ark Encounter in Kentucky (much geographically closer than Israel) did just that for us in our recent visit. It's a massive, full-size replica of Noah's ark that also houses a world-class museum. In Genesis chapter 6 at the direction of God, Noah and his family, along with ‘two of every kind’ of creature, built and sealed themselves into an enormous ark ahead of a worldwide flood that destroyed all life on earth.

Located in Williamstown, Kentucky, The Ark Encounter features a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark from the Bible.

Once on the ark, visitors are transported back in time to marvel at its interior and exterior construction, wander through its animal pens and innovative feeding mechanisms and explore three-decks of world-class exhibits showing how Noah and his family may have lived. Informative exhibits clearly and informatively address key questions like "How did they all fit?" and "Were dinosaurs on board?" You also see many scientific contrasts between Creationism

and Evolution and how the Great Flood impacted the Earth’s history. We were particularly moved by how the Ark Encounter artfully displays the ark and its account in the Bible as a true historical event along with its metaphoric connection to our salvation in Christ. The Ark Encounter is great for families but take your time because you'll be doing a lot of walking. If you want to fill the day with even more fun, the park also offers the Ararat Ridge Zoo, featuring ani-

mals from around the world like Tibetan yaks and kangaroos; Extreme Zip Lines, with 1,000 ft. zip lines, soaring 17 stories in the air and reaching speeds up to 50 mph; a Fossil Find, where you learn about science from a biblical perspective; as well as daily events, dining and great gifts unique to the Ark experience. For even more fun, you can purchase tickets to the Ark Encounter's sister attraction, the Creation Museum, a stateof-the-art, 75,000 sq. ft. museum, bringing the pages of the Bible to life. Ark Encounter is located at 1 Ark Encounter Drive, Williamstown, KY 41097. Tickets start at $15 and excursion packages are available. For more information, you can visit www.arkencounter.com.

or Doug and I, it’s been 24 years next month since we said ‘I Do!’. As styles have updated and changed, some traditions have also stayed the same. A marriage is a celebration of a partnership for life. It’s the merging of two families to create a stronger, better bond. The wedding day itself is that cumulation of efforts and should be savored and enjoyed. One of the first decisions should be the venue and locally, we have three venues that offer every type of setting to make that wedding day special. Starting off at The Barn at Winthrop which offers an intimate setting in the heart of Brandon. Nearby is the gorgeous event venue, The Regent with vast ceilings, an amazing photo staircase and chandeliers. And, nearby is Cross Creek Ranch with 5 ceremony sites and 2 reception venues nestled under the Grand Oaks and over the wooden creek bridge. No matter the wedding style, there is a local venue for every wedding occaision. To help make some of those wedding decisions easier, each venue has a planner who will assist with each step of the planning. The Regent Is A Perfect Venue For Your Wedding And Other Celebrations By Kathy L. Collins

Every bride wants their special day to be a memorable one. The perfect venue will add to the lasting memories for both the bride and groom and all who attend the big day. The Regent, located in Riverview, is one of largest venues in the area, but it can also be a small, intimate and stylish one. A bride can opt to have both the ceremony and reception at The Regent or just the reception. The Regent offers an attractive outdoor courtyard complete with a sweeping staircase and three ballrooms that can be combined to hold up to 500 people. Shannon Keil is the Executive Director for The Regent. Keil, along with Brittanny Edwards the Event Manager, and Ashley Hodson, Event Coordinator can provide as much or as little advice and counsel as the bride wants or requires. The Regent’s al a carte presentation allows the do-it-yourself bride as well as the planner guided bride to their perfect day. The Regent is a beautiful blank

palette. The pristine wood floors and neutral colors will match any decor the bride desires. With its three beautiful large chandeliers in the ballroom suites and elegant details, there is a natural touch of class to any wedding or event. The Regent has several exclusive caterers and bar service that they have vetted over the years. The Regent vendors are members of the local community, and The Regent takes pride in supporting those local businesses. In addition to weddings, The Regent is a perfect venue for corporate events, celebration of life events, school functions and even charitable fundraising events for nonprofits. Keil said, "We offer special discounts for nonprofits to hold their events at The Regent." This Seasons Wedding Style Guide Includes Lots Of Lace By Amy West Flora’s Bridal

Lace, lace and more lace! This season we have seen an influx of brides looking for that perfect lace wedding gown. And it’s on a global scale. So much so, all our international designers are producing lace at nearly twice the rate of any other gown material. Low backs and illusion with lace sleeves are also at the top of our regions most wanted list. There are hundreds of styles of lace and each one of them creates a different look and feel. For example, Chantilly lace, a classic, is great for creating an antique rustic style look, which so many Florida brides adore. If you are looking for a more contemporary look, a lace applique with lattice netting is becoming increasingly popular. For that art deco feel try an embroidered baroque lace pattern. There truly is a lace to match every style. A lace gown can sparkle too. Many designers are using clear beadwork and/or sequins hidden throughout the gown to give the gowns a magical shimmer, tastefully, illuminating the bride as

she walks down the aisle. If you are not a fan of all that lace can do, fear not. Simplistic crepe (think Meghan Markle), and satins are making a big comeback. At Flora’s we have found that lace or no lace, many brides want bling. Adding a sparkle belt or crystal straps to an otherwise classic simple gown will completely transform the gown into an envy worthy one of a kind. Many local stores carry head to toe ‘bling’ (crystal/ rhinestone beaded) gowns, as that is a style our region continues to adore. As far as bridal gown silhouettes go, there isn’t a specific trend one way or another. The bride will always determine the best shape based how she envisioned her wedding and how she feels in each style. While the trends may come and go, one constant remains; the most important element of a wedding gown is always the bride wearing it. When she finds that perfect dress style and trends are out the window and all the room can see is a glowing bride in her dream dress.

Wedding Gowns: What To Know Before You Buy By Amy West Flora’s Bridal

Every bride dreams of that magical moment when she tries on her wedding gown for the first time. Unfortunately, that dream can quickly go awry if she is not prepared for what lies ahead. There are several important factors all brides should know before stepping out to find that perfect dress. First, it is never too early to start shopping. Most wedding gowns are made-toorder, meaning, they can very well take up to six months to get from the designer to the store. If the wedding is in less than six months, visit a local bridal boutique and give them the time frame upfront. Many shops work directly with designers and can either rush ship, sell the sample right off the rack, or check the designer’s warehouse inventory to decrease the wait time. That said, start early and avoid the hurdles if possible. Next, set a gown budget and stick to it. Wedding gowns are expensive

and can run from a couple hundred to several thousand dollars. It is highly advised to not try on gowns that are over budget, doing so is recipe for disappointment. When setting the budget keep in mind many bridal shops work with brides and allow a deposit for special orders cutting upfront costs in half. The remaining balance becomes due when the gown arrives in the shop. Check around as some shops offer layaway plans as well. Don’t forget to include alterations in the overall gown budget. Bridal alterations are more than simple tailoring; lace, hand sewn beadwork, and delicate materials all contribute to the high cost of bridal alterations. Brides should be prepared to spend between $300 and $800 on their alterations. Again, the materials and fit will determine the final cost. Most importantly, have fun! Every bride deserves an enchanted experience that she can treasure for a lifetime. Being prepared will allow the bride to enjoy her “yes to the dress” moment.

Buying ‘Off-The-Rack’ By Amy West Flora’s Bridal Most brides out shopping for their wedding gown are not familiar with all the intricacies of the bridal world and expect to walk into a store and leave with a dress. This just isn’t so in bridal. I’m sure you’ve heard the term before, she bought that off-therack. Well, what does it really mean? Wedding gowns are typically special ordered, not to be confused with custom ordered. Special ordered means the gown being purchased is ‘made to order’ however, it is made to a standard size and will need to be altered to perfectly fit the bride. Custom or couture gowns, are made as ordered to the bride’s exact measurements. The most obvious difference between special ordered vs. custom ordered is usually a few thousand dollars. Both can take up to six months or more to arrive in the shop. So where do off-the-rack gowns fit in? Generally bridal shop gowns are ‘samples’. These are the gowns brides try on before ordering themselves a sparkly new wedding dress. But, when a designer decides to no longer produce a certain style, bridal shops will sell these samples ‘off-the-rack’. As the dress is no longer available to order, a bride can walk into a

store and purchase the discontinued gown at a great discount and take it home the same day. There are some obvious benefits to purchasing a discontinued style: such as, no wait times, and the reduced pricing. However, there are hidden costs to purchasing off-the-rack to be aware of before saying yes. If the dress is the wrong size, i.e. too large, it could result in costly alterations. So much so, it is often more cost effective to special order a new gown. Also, samples may have some wear and tear. Cleaning a sample is sometimes necessary as well. Do not let just anyone clean the gown. Ensure they can clean the gown without melting or destroying the delicate fabrics and or bead-work. Regardless of whether your dress is special ordered or purchased off-the-rack, the results will be the same; a beautiful bride donning a dream gown, enchanting her guests. Absolutely, no one will know if that gown was off-the-rack or custom ordered, so follow your instincts and buy what you love. Amy West is the owner of Flora’s Bridal 768 W. Lumsden Rd. The Perfect Wedding Band

Now that you have your engagement ring and settled on your venue and dress, it’s time to pick out the perfect band to accompany your left-hand sparkler. There are many factors to consider. Cost, comfort and overall style are a few of the most important ones.

your options with your partner before hitting up a jewelry store.

Set Your Budget

Try ‘Em On

Ironically, wedding bands are one of the most overlooked costs of planning a wedding — and they can be expensive. However, you can find beautiful rings in every budget. It is important to balance what you can afford with what you want to see on your hand for the rest of your life. Be sure to account for bands for both you and your significant other. Materials (gold, platinum or titanium) and gemstones will factor into the final price.

Matching Your Ring Versus Matching Your Partner’s

Answering this question will help you narrow down your choices a lot. If you want your wedding bands to match, then you need to discuss elements that both of you do (and perhaps more importantly don’t) want. Or perhaps there is a wedding band that matches your engagement ring. Be sure to discuss

Nothing will help you make a decision faster than seeing potential bands sitting next to your engagement ring. After you’ve set your budget and discussed your options with your significant other, it’s time to try on some rings. If you have the opportunity and the time, visit as many local jewelry stores as possible. You never know where you are going to find a deal and a truly breathtaking band. Plus, there is not much that beats spending a casual hour in a jewelry shop while associates bring you band after band to slip on your finger. throw out Rule Book There are no hard-and-fast rules to what type of wedding band you should choose, including choosing none at all. Stay true to your own style and budget and you will end up with a ring you are eternally happy with.
