The annual FishHawk Turkey Trot 5K, 10K, 1M and Fun Run will take place on Thanksgiving morning. All proceeds will benefit Seeds of Hope.

FishHawk’s Most Wanted Turkey will make its annual appearance at this year’s FishHawk Turkey Trot. He will be there to greet you and your family, as you participate in the festivities, which will take place Thanksgiving morning, November 28, at the Publix Plaza on 5668 Fishhawk Crossing Blvd. in Lithia. Come wobble with the turkey before you gobble the big meal. The race will support the Seeds of Hope Food Bank, which provides food assistance for the community and is primarily funded by the annual Turkey Trot. Seeds of Hope President Leda Eaton said, “I love that so many start their Thanksgiving with us at the turkey trot. It’s a great pre-Thanksgiving activity that the whole family can come to and have fun. Everyone who registers gets a race T-shirt and, new this year, a race medal too. But with all of that…the heart of the race, is that all proceeds from the race are used by Seeds of Hope to feed those in need in our community. It’s the ultimate feel good race.” The chip-timed 5K costs $30 ($35 on race day) and will begin at 8 a.m. The chip-timed 10K will also begin at 8 a.m. and costs $35 ($40 on race day). Professor Ed Maley always believed in helping others achieve their goals. The judo instructor of 70 years passed away at the age of 87 in the beginning of October. Maley started practicing judo when he was in the Air Force and made a career out of it. He taught combative measure to the troops, and he eventually went with a few other soldiers as the first team ever sent to Japan to the headquarters of worldwide judo, the Kodokan Institute, where he competed. He was the first military man to place in the U. S. Nationals. He was transferred to MacDill AFB in 1959, where he was in charge of the Physical Conditioning Unit, training troops in self defense, judo and karate. He passed on the Olympic trials to start the Florida School of Judo in 1963 when he left the Air

Force after 12 years of service. About 15 years ago, he sold his business, but continuted to volunteer. He spent a lot of his free time volunteering at various facilities, including the Campo YMCA as a judo instructor for many years, offering free classes. According to his son, Keith Maley, at one point in time, his father traveled to eight to twelve facilities and recreation centers a week to teach classes. On the front window of his Tampa business, he had the phrase “Nice people and champions are made here.” He taught several state, national, international, world and Olympic competitors and champions. About two weeks before he passed away, he was still teaching classes. “He was one of a kind,” said Keith. “It wasn’t about the money for him. He didn’t try to run it like a business. He enjoyed teaching, and he tried to help people and give them confidence.” Shihan Maley, as his students loving referred to him, had many accomplishments and awards, including the 1998 Platinum Award for 50 years of

New Center Exhibit Brings History’s Building Blocks To Life In LEGO® Bricks

By Manny Leto

In the U.S. for the first time, ‘Brick History’ lets visitors journey through pivotal moments in world history modeled in LEGO® bricks. Featuring key figures from Mozart to Martin Luther King, scientific discoveries from the Big Bang to DNA and recent history from mobile phones to the moon landings, history comes to life in LEGO® bricks during ‘Brick History,’ a new exhibit at the Tampa Bay History Center opening on Saturday, October 19. The exhibit features 28 meticulously crafted models, each depicting a person, moment or discovery that altered world history. ‘The Arts’ explores creativity from cave paintings to pop art, ‘Conflict’ moves from natural disasters like Pompeii to political disputes such as the Boston Tea Party, ‘Equality’ brings to life the Civil Rights movement, ‘Exploration’ depicts discoveries and inventions that have changed our world, while ‘Transport’ moves from railways and seafaring to

flight. LEGO® artist Warren Elsmore and his team have created a celebration of our shared stories, struggles and triumphs, made from everyone’s favorite Danish toy. There will be tables set up inside the exhibit area where both kids and adults can build their own LEGO® brick creations. Kids can try their hand at building iconic Florida models, including a palm tree, an alligator, a sailboat and more. ‘Brick History’ will also feature some bay area flare, with LEGO® brick portraits of pirates, local sports logos and a map of Florida by Tampa artist John Fontana from Bricks 4 Kidz. The exhibit is on view at the History Center through Sunday, February 16, 2020. Some upcoming events include: Tuesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. – Sangria and Stories: Brick History; Saturday, November 16 at 10 a.m. – Bricks 4 Kidz (ages 5-14); and Saturday, November 16 at 7 p.m. – LEGO® Brick Retro Game Night (hosted by the History Center Teen Council). PERFORMANCE CARE TO MAXIMIZE YOUR ATHLETE’S ABILITIES It’s common for us to have athletes come into our office to get an injury treated, but more often than not, a non-traumatic injury is the result of body mechanics not functioning appropriately. This means that if we were to just treat the injury itself and then send that athlete back to the sport that caused the injury in the first place, they would likely end up injured again. This is why in all of our treatment plans we perform a head to toe joint evaluation. From your neck down to literally how your big toe is functioning, we evaluate how that joint is performing when you run, pitch, jump, etc. Not only does this approach keep our athletes out of injury, but it can make them to pitch faster, run harder, and jump higher. Generalized training and conditioning with the team or even sport-specific with most trainers does not account for every athlete’s individualized anatomical abilities. They train for the sport requirements and not what that athlete may be able to safely perform, so ultimately, it ends up training compensation patterns that result in injury or decreased performance. Our physicians are trained in techniques that many professional athletes and teams utilize to keep their players performing at their highest ability, safely. You can find the same techniques and protocols in our office that are used throughout the MLB, NHL, NFL, and even at Westside Barbell, which produces arguably the strongest powerlifters in the world. Athletes we love to work with: runners, swimmers, pitchers, golfers, weightlifters, and all youth and high school athletes Treatment at Motion ChiroTherapy will always be in a

1-on-1 setting with the doctor for every visit.

Five Decades Have Been Filled With Festival Fun At Nativity Novemberfest, Nov 21-24 Nativity Catholic’s Novemberfest will celebrate five decades of festival fun when it returns from Thursday, November 21 to Sunday, November 24. Following the Florida State Fair and Strawberry Festival, Novemberfest is the third largest annual carnival in Hillsborough County. More than just a time-honored tradition, Novemberfest is Nativity’s largest fundraiser supporting its school and faith formation program. The family-fun attracts about 100,000 people each year and is put on by its parish volunteers. Sherry Stewart, a longtime parishioner of Nativity, has been helping with Novemberfest for 40 years. Stewart volunteers as the food chairman managing the 15 different vendors in the food tent. “Years ago, my boys were going to school here, and I wanted to get involved and contribute to my parish,” explained Stewart. “We (Nativity) used to have a festival twice a year, one in the spring and one in the fall, but in the mid-80s, we switched to one big festival because we wanted to make it larger scale by adding carnival rides.” Richard Boot, a Brandon resident, is credited for naming Novemberfest. The late Monsignor Lara, Nativity’s priest at the time, commissioned the parishioners to come up with a name for the festival. Boot said, "My name, Novemberfest, was picked, and I got free parking in front of the church for

six months." He jokingly added, “It’s too bad that I was usually late to church to find someone already parked there.” The fest will take place on the church grounds on Thursday from 410 p.m., Friday from 4 p.m.-12 Midnight, Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 Midnight and Sunday from 12 Noon to 10 p.m. This year’s Alumni Day will be held on Sunday along with Appreciation Day for the military, law enforcement and first responders. Admission, parking and entertainment are all free. Crowd favorite Soul Circus Cowboy will perform Friday at

Stewart also shared that Shells, a local seafood restaurant, is joining this year’s food tent. From traditional hamburgers to scratch-made Polish cooking, each year, festgoers look forward to the variety and quality of the different food booths. “I have 15 different food booths. Lions Club Ready To Start A New Chapter In FishHawk, Members Needed

By Jasmine Haroun

A new Lions Club will be forming in the FishHawk Ranch area. Lions Club is in an international service organization whose mission since 1917 has been to change lives and leave a lasting impact on the world. The club has five main areas of service: diabetes, environment, hunger, childhood cancer and vision. Lions Club International is made up of about 1.5 million men and women in over 210 countries and has just celebrated its 102nd anniversary. Recently, the global membership team worked together to canvas local businesses, and because of FishHawk’s geographic area and rapid growth, it decided to form its new chapter in this area. This new club will be part of district 35-I which currently has 48 clubs and approximately 1,250 members. Lions Clubs serve their community in many ways. Some of the activities performed by other chapters include, but are not limited to, collecting supplies for disaster relief, Adopt-a-Highway, vision screenings and food drives. The club will decide what types of service projects it will perform by conducting a community needs assessment. This survey of community leaders will pinpoint where the greatest needs lie. Twenty members are needed in order to charter the club. The club will be organized through meetings held at

Grace United Methodist Church. The Lions Club is searching for any service-minded individuals (man and woman) over the age of 18 to join. There is a one-time $35 initiation fee and then annual dues of $90 to $100, which works out to be less than $2 a week. Attendance at meetings is not required; however, participation in club service activities is strongly encouraged. The new club, once formed, will choose its own officers while a certified Guiding Lion will work with the new club for two years to ensure their success. Most club meetings are an hour long and it is recommended that clubs meet at least twice a month, but it can vary from one to four meetings a month depending on what the club decides. Some clubs can choose to meet electronically and may only get together for actual service projects. “I will be celebrating my 45th year as a Lion member. I am proud to carry on my father's legacy,” said Blair Kunka, who will become a second-generation district governor for the Lions Club next year. The first regular meeting will be held at the Grace Community United Methodist Church located at 5708 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. on Wednesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. For more information contact Lion Tim Foreman at tampatim@juno.com.

CPR Training Now Readily Available Due To Vital Life Savers

By Franka Potter

CPR demonstration with training mannequins in three sizes, infant, child and adult.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training became more readily available to Brandon and neighboring residents when Vital Life Savers opened its doors in March 2019. Co-owner Deborah Awolowo saw a need within the community for CPR training and as a medical provider decided to help meet that need. Awolowo mentioned that, as part of her medical license requirements, CPR training is mandatory; however, when she was a CPR student, she felt the course was rushed and students were not required to perform hands-on compression on manikins. She stated, “I believe that everyone who takes a CPR course should actually perform compressions on manikins so they can understand how challenging it could be.” The mission of Vital Life Savers is to educate the community on the importance of performing CPR correctly and safely. It certifies individuals within various

industries such as healthcare, food service, childcare and education. It utilizes manikins with feedback devices to ensure that students give high-quality chest compressions with real-time feedback on depth and rate. Awolowo also stated that, “Vital Life Savers makes learning CPR easy and fun. Our courses are taught by people in the medical field. We especially encourage new parents, grandparents and babysitters to learn how to perform CPR on infants. CPR is performed differently on infants than on a child or an adult. We offer classes six days a week.” Vital Life Savers is staffed with a team of eight who are all certified with the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC) and American Health & Safety Institute (ASHI). They also provide certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Life Support (PALS). Students who complete the CPR course with Vital Life Savers will also be certified with AHA, ARC and ASHI. Classes are kept small to ensure students receive the one-on-one attention needed and to provide a comfortable and nonintimidating learning environment. Visit Vital Life Savers at 644 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon or go to www.vital-heart.com. You can also give it a call at 333-0666 to make an appointment. Hours of operation are Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Hillsborough County recently held a public meeting proposing changes to Natures Way Blvd. in Bloomingdale with the goal of making the area safer for bikers, pedestrians and drivers.

Bloomingdale residents recently had the opportunity to learn about Hillsborough County’s plans to revamp traffic on Natures Way Blvd. At a public meeting last month, county experts shared proposed designs to enhance the section of Natures Way Blvd. between Elba Pl. and Bell Grande Dr. in Bloomingdale East to improve safety and accessibility for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists. Recommendations include converting the existing four-lane roadway into a two-lane roadway with a median and center left-turn lane, along with a bicycle lane in each direction. “A history of crashes along this corridor, including three cyclists who were struck by motor vehicles, initiated a review of the road,” said Jim Hudock, director of Hillsborough County’s Capital Programs Department. “Motorists have been caught on that road traveling as fast as 75 miles an hour. That review pointed out road design improvements that could be made to help keep the road safer without creating congestion.” Hudock also explained why he recommends moving from four to two lanes

in this location. “The redesigned road will be safer for drivers with fewer lanes to cross while turning and it will be safer for cyclists who will have their own bike lanes on a roadway that emphasizes them,” he said. “It will be safer for pedestrians, who will have safe ‘refuge islands’ as they cross.” The $1.95 million Capital Improvement Project will also include upgraded signage and sharrow pavement markings on nearby sections of Natures Way Blvd., Culbreath Rd., Glenhaven Dr., Greenhollow Ln. and Springvale Dr. “The lanes will be marked in a way that makes it clear where to look for bicyclists,” said Hudock who explained that sharrow markings are the white pavement markings that have a bike and arrows to show which directions cyclists should take. Construction on the project is expected to start in early 2020 and last approximately 12 months. Additional information on the project is available online at www.HCFLGov.net/CountyProjects. For more information about the meeting, call 272-5275.

THE RIDE: Four-door, fivepassenger 2019 Infiniti QX50 Essential AWD SUV. DOWN THE ROAD: This one’s all new, well almost. Out go the previous V-6 versions to be replaced by a 2.0-liter variablecompression turbo engine. It is as powerful or even more so as the agile SUV quickly takes to the road, boasting a first-rate ride and laudable handling. TECH & PERFORMANCE: Under the hood of the midsize luxury SUV is a 4-cylinder power train that cranks out 268 horsepower at 5600 rpm and 280 pounds-feet of torque at 4800 rpm. We liked the slick and seamless continuous variable transmission, which also can be shifted manually. An all-new MacPherson strut front and a rear multilink suspension ensure stability at sharp turns, corner and bumps on the road. The variable-assist, direct adaptive steering conveys an unswerving feel. Braking duties are handled exceptionally well by 13-inch vented front and 12.1-inch rear discs. Four drive modes are offered: standard, eco, sport and personal. LOOK & FEEL: Based on a steel unibody structure, QX50 is one sharp-looking vehicle that is shorter but wider and taller than its predecessor. It all starts at the long clamshell hood that meets up with a double-arch black-metallic grille, surrounded by horizontal LED headlights and fog lamps. The aluminum roof rails are standard as are the chrome dual exhaust tips and rear tail lamps that connect to the chrome strip. The cabin is awash with luxury and comfort features such as aluminum accents on the center console, dashboard, doors, push-button ignition, 60/40-split rear seat, eight-way power front seats, tri-zone auto a/c, 8-inch upper touch screen for naviga-

tion and a 7-inch lower screen for climate, audio and phone controls. InTouch, a rotary knob in the center console, controls the dual screens. The familiar Infiniti double-wave instrument panel lights up with electroluminescent gauges. A mix of leather and aluminum on the short but easyto-grip shifter knob gives a classy touch. As for roominess, there is plenty with a total interior volume of 135.8 cubic feet, and 64.4 cubic feet with the rear seat down. There also is a large hidden under-floor bin. SAFETY FIRST: Dual front, side and knee airbags, side curtain airbag for both rows, four-wheel antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, vehicle dynamic and traction controls, antiskid system, front/rear crumple zones, front seat active-head restraints, blind spot warning and tire pressure monitoring system are standard. Looking into the future of autonomous transport, the optional ProPilot Assist helps drivers to maintain their lane, and set vehicle speed and distance to a car ahead. OUT THE DOOR: $45,150, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. With options, ours peaked up to $59,585. BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 225/45R20; wheelbase, 110.2 inches; length, 184.7 inches; height, 66 inches; width, 74.9 inches; fuel capacity, 16 gallons; city, 24 mpg; highway, 30 mpg; weight, 3,857 pounds; Web site: www.nissanusa.com WHY DIG IT: If you are looking for a carlike ride that offers luxury, convenience and utilitarian features, then the QX50 should fit the bill. Kudos goes to Infiniti for overhauling this fine crossover into an even more appealing buy. For more information or to test drive the Infinity, visit Infinity of Tampa at 4600 N Dale Mabry Hwy. in Tampa. Visit www.infinitioftampa.com.

McAuley spent a decade as assistant manager at Martin Jewelers prior to opening McAuley’s Fine Jewelry. When Martins Jewelers closed, he took over becoming the owner and changing the name, but he kept all of the skilled staff. His journey to the jewelry trade wound through other professions. “I’ve sold things from insurance to appliances, but was miserable because these were things customers had to buy,” said McAuley. McAuley’s is a one-stop-shop for all of your jewelry wants and needs. Custom

designs are a specialty at McAuley’s, but previously loved (consignment) jewelry is also sold. Watch and jewelry repairs are done on-site by experienced staff members. McAuley’s will also purchase gold from you. Find it on Facebook at McAuley Fine Jewelry and enter its random drawing each month for a chance to win a featured piece of jewelry. Gladys Zenquis recommended McAuley Fine Jewelry on Facebook. “We only have them take care of our jewelry. Not only the great customer service and communication, but also how they treat every piece of jewelry like if it was their own. If you’re going to be needing something fixed or even cleaned.... this is the place to come,” she commented. Hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit McAuley Fine Jewelry at 664 Oakfield Dr. in Brandon. You can reach them at 689-8124. Participants take aim at wooden targets with axes that weigh almost two lbs. Fans say that throwing axes can be both exciting and challenging. The sport of axe throwing as a sport isn’t new; in fact, it could be one of the oldest sports in existence. However, throwing axes as a sport or pastime is just rolling onto the scene in the United States. The growing sport of axe throwing recently gained in popularity in Canada and has gained quite a following in America within the last two years. Bury The Hatchet is a New Jerseybased company that has 16 locations nationwide, with its newest location in Brandon. Campo YMCA Focuses On Keeping All Ages Active And Engaged

The Campo Family YMCA is pleased to welcome Angela Fulgieri as its new Program Director of Senior Health and Well-Being. In this role, Fulgieri will work with the community’s ever-expanding active older adult population, helping grow current offerings while also developing new and innovative senior programming. Angela brings with her a wealth of experience having served as the Wellness Experience Director for the Plant City Family YMCA for the past two years. Her time at the Plant City Y resulted in new community partnerships, increased member retention and expanded personal training. Prior to that, Angela began working for the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA years ago as a Welcome Center representative, group exercise instructor and wellness coordinator. “As we age, it is increasingly important to stay active and exercise regularly,” said Fulgieri. “From group exercise and pickleball to potlucks and chronic disease prevention, the Y is committed to providing funda-

With Fulgieri onboard, the Campo Y team is eager to expand its positive impact in the Greater Brandon community.

Stephen put on his 60 pounds of gear and ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he and his entire battalion perished that day. This foundation builds Smart-Homes for our catastrophically wounded veterans, first responders, and their families. Anyone wanting to participate should go to 2019 Tunnel to Towers Clearwater to register. Dove Interiors remodeled its showroom at the end of last year and decided rather than sell a container full of its office furniture, chose to donate all of it to the Mary & Martha House. What To Give And Ask To Receive For The Holidays The holidays are right around the corner, making this a great time to consider plants for gifting. The classic holiday plant selection is most likely the poinsettia. However, this article will focus on two other great holiday plants; amaryllis and gardenia. Amaryllis is a bulb that produces large, trumpetshaped flowers. It is also a good container plant and can reach a height and spread of one-three ft. It needs well-drained soil, has medium drought and low to no salt tolerance. It makes a great impact when planted in terraces, gate entrances or as a border plant in groups of 10 or more. Plant it between September and January in partial shade or in the sun. Propagation is from seeds, cuttings and smaller bulbs attached to the ‘mother’ bulbs. You can leave bulbs in the ground for years or dig them up and replant them during September and October. Blooms last several weeks. Gardenias are fragrant white flowers and has glossy dark green leaves. This plant can reach a height and spread of four to eight ft. Full sun to partial shade provides the best flowering. Well-drained soil that has been amended with organic matter is preferred. This large shrub has medium drought and low to no salt tolerance. It should be fertilized two to three

times each year. After flowering has been completed, it can be pruned. However, if you prune after October 1, blooming the following year will be decreased. Propagation is by grafting or cuttings. Gardenia can be used as a hedge or groundcover, and it is beautiful in mass plantings or as a specimen plant. For the gardeners in your life, they may well like amaryllises, gardenias or other gardening-related gifts that are not plants. These items may include a garden cart, saw or pruners, gloves, plant books, seeds, bulbs, pots, mulch, potting soil, perlite, plant hangers, composting bin, composting worms, microirrigation kit, garden sculpture, garbage cans (I only have eight and could use more!) and dozens of other items gardeners want or need. For more information about these holiday gems, please see the University of Florida publications Gardenias at a Glance by Sydney Park Brown and Joan Bradshaw, at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/EP/EP33800.pdf, and Hippeastrum x hybridum Amaryllis by Edward F. Gilman, at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fp255, from which information contained in this article was adapted. Sydney Baptist Church Transitioned Into First Call For First Responders This year on April 7, Sydney Baptist Church finished transitioning into its new identity, First Call, ‘A Unique Church for Extraordinary People.’ The 110-year-old church voted in January to change from its traditional church model into its new model for a A police officer greater focus on its speaking before a mission to help the congregation in thousands of first First Call. responders and their families in our community. Senior Chaplain (Dr.) Daniel Middlebrooks, who is a retired military chaplain, noticed that some of Hillsborough County’s first responders wouldn’t go to church because they believed they didn’t fit in, that no one could understand their experiences or that their lives were too messy. Wanting to offer a safe place where they can be around people who understand them, decompress, express their thoughts and heal, Chaplain Middlebrooks was inspired to form First Call. “It’s a growing congregation of first responders, their families and the community that, deeply, are devoted to taking care of them,” said Chaplain Middlebrooks. “There are a lot of great churches that take care of the community; what our primary target and focus is; is to take care of those who take care of our community.”

By Taylor Wells

To accommodate the schedules of first responders, First Call altered its service times. Its services and messages are also designed with them in mind, focusing on personal resilience, spiritual growth, leadership development and the readiness of daily development for putting on the armor of God. The church began its transition by installing three statues, called the Three Guardians, in front of a cross, which was built at the church’s beginning. Each statue represents a different kind of first responder. The left statue depicts law enforcement, in the middle is military and on the right is fire and rescue. Through these statues, First Call acknowledges and celebrates all first responders in our community. According to Chaplain Middlebrooks, by standing at the cross, not only do the statues represent the congregation First Call is reaching out to, they also remind us that the foot of the cross is level and that all of us need to understand what it means to live under grace as well as live that grace. First Call is located at 1510 Cre Rd. in Dover. For more information, visit firstcallsbc.com, call 652-8178 or email Chaplain Middlebrooks at chaplain@firstcallsbc.com.
