Grace Notes

Still Judging Books by Their Covers By Debora Coty We’d been enjoying our getaway to our remote Smoky Mt cabin when we learned that a strong storm front was heading our way. My eyes immediately shifted to the row of trees on the small cliff above our cabin. The soil had eroded beneath their exposed roots; they appeared to be clinging desperately to the remaining patch of ground on one side, the only thing still anchoring them. Several were decidedly leaning toward our house, hovering over our roof. “Okay,” I told Spouse, “Time to do something about those trees.” So he called Bubba. Now Bubba is a typical mountain man: rough as a cob and tough as a knob. Bubba doesn’t say much. He mostly communicates with a series of head nods and guttural grunts. I’m not sure if this is because he finds talking a waste of energy or if his lack of teeth makes it too dang bothersome. The cigarette stubs always bobbing from his whiskered lips don’t make speaking any easier. Bubba is the go-to guy around here. Need your steep hill mowed? Call Bubba. A bear rip the door off your shed? Call Bubba. Bothersome tree need taking down? Bubba’s your man. So when Bubba drove up in his big old pickup to take a look at our tree problem, I wasn’t surprised. But I was surprised when a young woman half his age stepped out of the cab carrying a toddler. Bubba sure didn’t appear to be the type to want kids around. Especially not little noisy ones dressed in a ducky coat. In fact, I had Bubba pegged in my mind as a hermit, living a stark, solitary life somewhere in a mountain cave, only interacting with mankind when he had no choice. But while Spouse took Bubba around back to appraise our trees, I heard from the young woman some astounding facts.

Apparently Bubba had raised two little boys – not his blood kin – entirely on his own and another little girl begged him to adopt her when her family fell apart. He did. Without hesitation. And now Bubba spends all kinds of time helping this single mom and her wee daughter, a surrogate granddaddy to the precious little thing, who lit up like a sunbeam when Bubba came near. It melted my heart to watch the grisly old man snuff out his lit cigarette with bare fingers and reach out to take the child from her mother. She fawned all over him, adoration glowing from her eyes, as she fingered the deep lines embedded in his face and clapped her hands with glee when he flashed her a toothless grin. Shame, shame on me. There I’d been, judging a book by its cover again. And I’d been totally and unquestionably wrong. Won’t I ever learn? Even rats learn. Toss ’em in a maze with cheese at the end and they’ll eventually learn the right way from their wrong choices. I must throw myself on Papa God’s mercy seat and once again beg forgiveness for appearance-judging others. I know better. I shall do better, with His help. Because the Bubbas of this world deserve better. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Matthew 7:1 NIV).

The Mighty Miracles Of Jesus Jesus Feeds The Hungry Crowd

By Kelly Wise Valdes

During His ministry, Jesus performed more than 40 miracles, including healing the sick, changing the natural elements of nature and even raising people from the dead. A miracle is considered an event that occurs outside the bounds of natural law. Each month we will take a closer look at one of His miracles to understand the depth of His love for us. Understanding the miracles of Jesus can change your life, and it all begins with believing through faith. In Matthew 4:12-16, we learn of a miracle Jesus performed on behalf of a Roman soldier, also known as a centurion. This was very unusual because, during this time, Jewish leaders were usually not fond of Roman soldiers. Aside from the resurrection, the only miracle recorded in all four Gospels is the story about Jesus feeding more than 5,000 people. That day, a large crowd had gathered to hear the teaching of Jesus, and as the evening was approaching, the disciples suggested that Jesus end for the night. People needed to travel back to their villages to eat and feed their family. Jesus thought that feeding the crowd was a better idea and sent the disciples to find food. As usual, the

disciples felt overwhelmed by the task of feeding such a large, hungry crowd. They certainly doubted Jesus’ instructions. When they returned to Jesus a short time later, they reported the only food available was from a young boy who had five loaves of bread and two fish. Jesus took the bread and fish and asked God's blessing on the food. Breaking the loaves into pieces, He kept giving the bread and fish to the disciples to disperse to the hungry crowd. Not only did everyone eat abundantly, but the disciples picked up 12 baskets of leftover bread and fish. Every single person was fed from five loaves of bread and two fish. This miracle provides so many lessons for Christians. First, God was demonstrating that He can exceed our expectations and sufficiently provide for our needs. This miracle is a reminder that nothing we face here on earth is too big for God. Also, notice how Jesus choose to use the food from the young boy to feed 5,000 people. The boy willingly shared the little food he had. This demonstrates that our possessions and abilities are never too small to serve God. No matter what we face, we serve a big God. We must trust that God will provide for our needs.

The Gracious Gift Of Forgiveness

By Kelly Wise Valdes

There is nothing more incapacitating than holding on to anger and resentment. Anger, more than any other emotion, can consume all aspects of our lives, distort our thoughts and destroy our relationship with God. As we enter the Autumn season and anticipating all the upcoming family gatherings, there is no better time to prepare yourself with the gift of forgiveness. Maybe you need to forgive someone for a betrayal that happened during the year. Perhaps you need to ask a friend or family member for forgiveness for a misunderstanding that was never resolved. Maybe you need to forgive yourself for resentment that you have held onto for too long. Whatever it is, reflect on the gift of forgiveness and the peace that forgiveness brings.

Forgiveness: Finding Peace Through Letting Go By: Adam Hamilton

This top-selling book reveals the revelation that forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves rather than to someone else. Readers will learn that only when we learn to forgive others and ourselves can we truly receive forgiveness from God and reminds us about the importance of reconnecting the broken pieces of our lives.

How to Forgive Ourselves— Totally By: R.T. Kendall

God can use anyone again, on one condition—that he or she deeply repents. When there is a broken and contrite heart after a fall, there is hope. In this book, we find the promise of hope and the steps to repentance and reconciliation for all.

Caring For Young Kids And Aging Parents? Listen up! Or Courts Will Do It For You.

813.413.8900

By Laurie E. Ohall, Board Certified Elder Law Attorney

As our parents get older and begin to lose their independence, many will turn to their adult children to help them navigate the complicated and costly world of long-term care. For adult children already caring for young kids of their own, this new role of ‘caregiver’ can be a difficult one to assume. It’s no wonder this group of people is known as the ‘Sandwich Generation’ as they are literally ‘sandwiched’ between the pressures of raising a family, holding down a job and managing mom or dad’s growing medical and financial needs. If you don’t make arrangements for financial and medical decisions within your family, the courts will do it for you, so create a plan in advance while your parents still have the chance to have a say in their care and decisions. Elder law attorneys recommend five planning steps to help ensure aging parents are afforded the most protection, flexibility, and financial security, while helping the adult child retain life balance and personal sanity: Find out if your parents have an estate plan and whether it’s been updated in the past five years. The will, trust, powers of attorney, and health care directives your parents created years ago may not reflect their current wishes and long-term care needs now.

Determine How You Will Pay for Long-Term Care. Nursing home and assisted living facilities can cost up to $8,000 a month (average cost of care for skilled nursing in Hillsborough County, is now $9,485). Medicare will not pick up the tab. Inhome care can be equally burdensome. Medicaid may pay, provided you are hovering around the poverty level. Get the Legal Authority You Need Now to Manage Their Affairs and Maintain Control. If your parents do not have powers of attorney or health care directives that allow you to communicate with doctors, access medical records, and manage their financial affairs, it’s a good idea to create them now while mom or dad is still in good health. Document Their End-of-Life Wishes. Thousands of families each year are torn apart trying to decide what their loved one ‘would have wanted’ in serious medical situations. Get Organized Now to Avoid Last Minute Scrambling. Gather your parents’ important information now and create a ‘grab and go’ kit to avoid any confusion and delays in the event of a medical emergency. By being proactive and planning for these issues in advance, you can help make sure your parents receive the care they need without worry or financial struggle.

Borgund Stave Church, Norway

Nestled in the quaint village of Borgund, Norway sits a nearly 900year-old historic building -The Borgund Stave Church. This impressive structure was built in 1180 and dedicated to the Apostle Andrew. Remarkably wellpreserved, this landmark is considered one of the most distinctive stave churches in Norway. A stave church is a medieval wooden church. There are only 28 remaining stave churches in Norway, and Borgund is among the best-preserved. In 1153, Scandinavia was slowly embracing the beliefs promoted by early Christianity. As seen in European cities, religious organizations were building large and opulent churches that would reflect God’s greatness. However, the Norse lived in tiny rural communities, which led to smaller, practical churches. However, Borgund Stave Church is impressive in its own right with its distinctive and surreal construction. Stave churches showcase Norway's Viking era when skilled carving techniques were developed to combine art and woodworking. The portrayal of animals such as dragons and serpents in the carvings is representative of medieval Viking artistry. The roof gables depict four carved

dragon heads, swooping from the carved roof ridge, typical of the carved dragon heads found on many Norse ships. Similar gable heads also appear on small bronze houses typical in Norway in this period. Norway has a long history of wood construction, probably due to vast forests and rough terrain. It was one of a few countries that refused to build their early churches out of stone and instead chose wood. The stave churches were constructed from a particular type of fir called malmfuru, which was extremely hard wood and abundant. Fortunately, the Norse knew that in order to stand the test of time, the church needed to be built on a stone foundation. Unlike other wooden buildings, which lasted for a few decades at most, this construction technique preserved the material for centuries. Borgund Stave Church is Norway's most visited stave church. If it looks familiar, that could be because it's been copied and several replicas exist around the world, including Chapel in the Hills in Rapid City, South Dakota. No longer regularly used for church functions, Borgund is now a museum run by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments and is a popular tourist destination. Tours are conducted daily. For more information, visit www.stavechurch.com.

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. – Psalm 90:12 Question: What sounds like a good thing to do when there are only a few days remaining before vacation and literally scores of deadlines looming and there is hardly time to breathe let alone get ready? Answer (well, according to my wife): “Let’s dismantle, strip, and refinish the antique dining room table.” Be honest, was that the very first thing that came into your mind? Our 16-year old niece Sarah was visiting and Rebekah thought it would be a fun project. I’m really not involved but I have been observing and it really is interesting. The stripping is an intensive and messy process. And it’s especially gunky when there is more than 100 years of polish, wear, stain, and dirt to remove. The antiques people call it patina. As someone sporting over six decades of wear and tear myself I appreciate the richness and character. Character may be who we are when no-one else is looking, but it’s also what we are left with after the world has worked on us and worn us down. Challenging stories speak to our character and at the same time produce our character.

So this dining room table project is more than refinishing - it’s redemption, restoration, rejuvenation, reclamation, and reanimation. We all have experiences that have marked us, sometimes broken us, taken away the finish we had when we were younger, and even made us question. But now they help to define us. While I welcome the rejuvenation that comes from God I don’t ever want to stop learning from my experience. “Please don’t insulate me from this world, Lord,” I pray. “Instead, equip me to help facilitate its healing.” There is a sense that, as I ease into this stage of my ever-evolving life, there is a richness here I would not/could not have known absent six decades of wear and tear. So go easy on the reconstruction and the renovation, you don’t get patina like this overnight, you know! – DEREK Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. These three powerful weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God to the pulling down of strongholds according to 2 Corinthians 10:4.” The new book is available for pre-order in the Kindle Store to view or on Amazon.com.
