Spirit FM’s sixth annual Catholic Women’s Conference returns to the Florida State Fairground on Saturday, September 28. You are invited to join hundreds of women from all over West Central Florida for a day of celebrating faith and friendship. The day kicks off with 8 a.m. Mass led by Bishop Gregory Parkes of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Spirit FM's Abby Watts from The Big, Big House Morning Show will emcee the event. The day unfolds with guest speakers, refreshments, praise and worship time, opportunities to shop the different vendors and more. Over the years, the conference has become one of the largest Women's Catholic Conferences in Florida and an annual tradition for many. “We are so excited to be at the Florida State Fairgrounds again this year, and to be able to continue to grow this event so even more women

(and young women) can experience the unshakable hope and beauty of our faith,” explained Danielle Landry, the director of development at Spirit FM Radio. This year’s speakers include Fr. Larry Richards, a preacher, published author and radio host; Leah Darrow, an international speaker known for her reality television debut on America’s Next Top Model; and Elizabeth Bunbury, founder of Answered Prayers Cross, Inc., a healing art ministry using

clay-based therapy. More information about the individual speakers at the Women’s Conference can be found on Spirit FM’s website at www.myspiritfm.com/WomensConfer ence. Grow Into You Foundation, Inc. Offers Life-Coaching & More What began as a calling to mentor teens in the foster care system has now expanded into a foundation and a home for teens who have aged out at 18 years old. Brandon resident Erin (O’Grady) NeSmith, a certified professional coach and mentor, guides teens who are getting ready to age out of group homes and transition into adulthood. NeSmith described how her experiences as an educator and time working with juvenile justice led her to establish her foundation in 2016. She recognized the gaps in ‘the system’ and felt God placed this mission of mentorship in her heart. As a life-coach that specializes in trauma, NeSmith brings consistency and stability to their chaos. Every week, NeSmith visits group homes throughout the Tampa Bay area. The goal of the foundation is to prepare teens for adulthood before they leave the foster care group home. However, she spends much of her day also assisting teens who have already aged out. Through lifecoaching, she helps teens finish high school, encourages them to make healthy decisions and educates them on the state’s extended foster care benefits.

By Amanda Boston

“I help them shift their perspective,” explained NeSmith. “I tell them that ‘I can’t change your circumstances, but I can help you change the way you see them.’” Every year, nearly 26,000 teens age out of foster care. A recent study was conducted in the Midwest found that by age 26, between 31 to 46 percent of these former foster care teens were homeless at least once. Furthermore, an estimated 80 percent of foster youth suffer from a mental health issue.

In March 2018, NeSmith was honored as a Lightning Community Hero and received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation. That following December, NeSmith used the funds to establish the Oak House for boys in Brandon. NeSmith's father owned the Oak House property, which was renovated for its new purpose with materials generously donated by Chadwell Homes. The property is maintained by NeSmith's father and her church family from Element Church where her husband, Benjamin co-pastors. Currently, four former foster care teens (ages 18, 19, 19 and 20) live in the home and receive life-coaching and life-skills training. “The solution is a communitysupported and coach-supported home,” said NeSmith. “I want Oak House to be the model for all the other aged out homes in Hillsborough County, but funding is the main blockade.” To find out how you can help or donate to the Grow Into You Foundation, visit www.growintoyoufoundation.org.

O S P R E Y O B S E R V E R WE’VE MOVED TO VALRICO!

Women In The Bible churches when we commit to a ministry? Yet it does go deeper than that. The NASB interprets the Greek word ‘prostatis’ as servant, but other translations use the word ‘helper’ or ‘protectress.’ I LOVE THAT. Protectress. Roll it across your tongue with me. Kinda makes you want to roar, doesn’t it? Then ‘Phoebe’ rang a bell. I recalled that Phoebe is the name of the Moon Goddess from ancient Greek mythology (I’ve been fascinated by Greek mythology since childhood). Sure enough, a little research revealed that Paul’s Phoebe was likely named after the Greek Goddess Phoebe, indicating that she was probably a Greek/Gentile Christian; as opposed to being a Jew like many of the early believers. Phoebe was a non-Jewish convert to loving Jesus. Like me. Like you. I like her already. But my point here is that we ARE gals. Women who love and serve Jesus just as much as men folk. And because of that, we’re important. Jesus knew that when he appeared first to his women followers after the resurrection. The very ones who didn’t run for their lives and desert him like his disciples did.

In a recent study of women in the Bible, I was struck by how many women Paul knew personally who were stalwart behindthe-scenes stabilizers of the early church. Men seem to get most of the limelight for building the early church–and I do NOT want to take anything away from them for they certainly deserve credit where credit is due–but let’s never forget that women were important too. The first European Christian church began with a women’s Bible study. Praying, serving, loving ladies not only helped established what became the modern church; they were the invisible glue that held it together through the centuries. And I’m totally stoked that Paul recognized that. Three of the nine women he gave shout-outs to in Romans, chapter 16, really stood out. In verse one, Paul commends Phoebe, “a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea.” First of all, that city, Cenchrea–where have I heard that before? Ah, yes, it was the port near Corinth where Paul got a haircut (Acts 18:18). Must have been a humdinger of a stylist for Paul to document the occasion in the Holy Scriptures. That and this are the only two times it’s ever mentioned in the Bible. Feel free to add that to your list of interesting Bible trivia. Secondly, that word ‘servant’ just begged for a deeper look. After all, don’t we all feel like servants to our

Suffering From Depression?

TMS Of Central Florida Can Help

By Kelly Wise Valdes

TMS is owned and operated by Kathleen Carroll, M.D., Charles DeVine, M.D. and Troy Noonan, M.D.

Although depression is very treatable, only about half of all Americans who are diagnosed each year with depression actually seek treatment. That is why the devoted and highly skilled team at TMS of Central Florida are dedicated to helping patients find depression relief. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) has become a promising treatment alternative for people with depression who don't respond sufficiently to antidepressant medications. TMS of Central Florida, located in Brandon, is owned and operated by three of the most prominent psychiatrists in the area that have been successfully treating patients for more than 20 years: Charles DeVine, M.D., Kathleen Carroll, M.D., and Troy Noonan, M.D. In 2017, after extensive research into TMS provided by NeuroStar, the three psychiatrists decided that TMS Therapy was the logical progression in providing their patients the best solution to major depression. All TMS procedures are performed by TMS Coordinator Sandi Lopez and her staff under the supervision of a psychiatrist. While there are many effective treatments for depression, traditional approaches such as antidepressants and psychotherapy do not work for everyone. In fact, it is estimated that two-thirds of people with depression will not see satis-

factory relief from prescription antidepressants and will often need an additional or change in prescription. In 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved TMS as a treatment for people with major depression who have failed to respond to at least one antidepressant. The FDA approved the device, called NeuroStar, made by the company Neuronetics. TMS works by delivering highly focused MRI-strength magnetic pulses that non-invasively (without surgery) stimulate the brain. Patients being treated with TMS do not require anesthesia or sedation. They remain awake and alert and return to work or their daily routine immediately after each treatment. TMS treatments last less than 20 minutes and patients don’t have to stop their medications "The most rewarding part for me is the satisfaction of seeing results,” said Dr. Carroll. “TMS helps people get back to living life to the fullest.” The office often receives referrals from other psychiatrists, general practioners, as well as word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied patients. Seeing patients live a more normal and healthier lifestyle after TMS treatments gives the team tremendous gratification. "Most of my patients are amazed at the results,” said Dr. DeVine. “And that means the world to all of us here at TMS.” TMS is located at 1119 Nikki View Dr. in Brandon. Flexible treatment hours are available from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 423-7037 or email Sandi Lopez at tmscentralfl@gmail.com.

Live Like You Mean It Getting Ready for Sunday By Derek Maul Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. – Ecclesiastes 12:9-10 The hours between 7-10 p.m. Saturday evening comprise just about my favorite time of the week. I have finished cleaning the kitchen after dinner, I have just now made a pot of tea, and Rebekah and I are both settling into our final preparations for Sunday. She, working at the dining room table, is finishing up the last few paragraphs of her sermon before I run it off and she completely tears it apart between now and the morning; I, holed up in the family room with a study book and a Bible, am preparing to teach my class. All our combined creativity and curiosity and scholarship and passion for Jesus concentrated in these few hours between dinner and rest. Ideas flying from room to room; scriptures voiced and commented on; quotes from great thinkers peppering our conversation; prayer voiced both independently and together; vision for the church we serve and inspiration for the people we

both love. I’m not sure why it moves me so deeply, but it does. These hours are like everything that matters distilled into a moment of purpose, assurance, and conviction. How will God work in and through us this Sunday morning? I am not sure what exactly will transpire, but I can say beyond any doubt that we are the most privileged of people to be in the middle of God’s will and faithfulness and to be witnesses to such strong initiatives of love and grace. If reading this is your first clear invitation to take a few steps on a new journey with Jesus, then please take a moment to pray: “Loving God, thank you for your wide open spirit and your unconditional willingness to walk with us as we travel along this road. Lead us, by your grace and mercy, lead us home. Amen.” Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. The Mighty Miracles Of Jesus The Healing Of A Leper

By Kelly Wise Valdes

During His ministry, Jesus performed more than 40 miracles, including healing the sick, changing the natural elements of nature and even raising people from the dead. A miracle is considered an event that occurs outside the bounds of natural law. Each month, we will take a closer look at one of His miracles to understand the depth of His love for us. Understanding the miracles of Jesus can change your life, and it all begins with believing through faith. Back in biblical times, leprosy was considered a very serious disease with many social and religious implications. Lepers were considered unclean and were separated from others. The law required that a leper stay excluded from society. The leper described in Mark 1:40-45 breached this code by approaching Jesus, and Jesus violates it by touching the leper. “A man with leprosy came to Him and begged Him on his knees, ‘If you are willing, you can make me clean.’ He reached out His hand and touched the man. ‘I am willing,’ He said. ‘Be clean!’ Immediately the leprosy left Him, and he was cleansed." This leper did not doubt his faith that Jesus’ power was absolute. He was determined to reach Him, despite the large crowd and despite his dis-

ease. Coming before Jesus was his only hope, so he did what was necessary to overcome his disadvantages. And Jesus heals him. The leper broke social conventions and the law in his desperate attempt to get help. Regulations governing those suffering from leprosy required that they keep distant from those who were not afflicted, but this man came right up to Jesus and faithfully asked for help. In Leviticus 5:3, there’s a law forbidding anyone to touch a leper. But Jesus knows our hearts, not our afflictions. What can we learn from this miracle? Jesus reached out and touched people with immeasurable love without uncertainty. He embraced the leper without hesitation. How long had it been since the leper felt the grasp of another hand? There had been no kiss, no hug, no handshake, no touch of another person all the years of his leprosy. This lonely outcast sought the embrace of his Savior. The touch of Jesus was an outward sign of compassion in the heart of the Lord for this man as well as all of us—God’s children. It is all because of His incredible love for us that He reaches out to make contact with us, regardless of our uncleanly heart or soul.

Former Immanuel Lutheran Student Athlete Helps Makes A Difference In Her Community

By Nick Nahas

Hannah Harburg has always felt the importance of being a good Christian and serving community before self. The former Immanuel Lutheran student has not only been impressive on the volleyball court and in the classroom, but in the community as well. She is an offseason captain for the Durant volleyball team heading into her senior season and has a GPA close to 6.0. She is an editor for her school’s yearbook, a member of the National Honor Society and National English Honor Society and she runs the Durant volleyball social media page as well. Ever since she was a little girl, Harburg always felt the need to make her community and the world a better place. When she was younger, she would watch brain-pop videos and read almanacs and keep up on current events to come up with strategies to change the future for

the better. She has the goal of one day winning a Nobel Peace Prize. As of right now, she is starting her service at the community level as a part of the Rotary Interact Club at her school and the Rotary Club of FishHawk and Riverview as a Paul Harris Fellow with her family. This past year she worked at the Crawfish Festival in the Winthrop Town Center for charity. She has also previously been a part of park cleanups and school cleanups and the setting up for various fundraisers. “I really want to find a way to make a big impact on this world,” said Harburg. “It’s been something that I’ve been striving for since I was a little kid.” Harburg was raised in a Christian household and continues to uphold her Christian values in everyday life. “It really affects my core being and it helps for me to portray the kind of character that I’ve always wanted to portray,” said Harburg.

“Essentially Christianity has helped to give me some guidelines as to how I choose to live my life and how I choose the decisions I make for myself.” Harburg has a lot of self-motivation, and she says that she gets some of that motivation from her teachers and friends who push her to continue the path that she’s on. She has been on the honor roll every semester, if not the principal’s honor roll. She was also named Tampa Bay Times all-Hillsborough County volleyball honorable mention this past season. She is going to be taking 10 classes, two online and eight on campus, at the beginning of the next school year to reach above a 6.0 GPA. Five of those classes will be college level courses. She would also like to earn the Diamond Award for the highest GPA on her volleyball team. “I want to be the

best leader and the best example that I possibly can for the girls that are younger than me and for the girls that are playing beside me,” said Harburg. That includes her youngest sister, Hallie, who will attend Durant next year and try out for the team. Harburg continues to have lofty expectations for herself. Her biggest goal is to further her education and attend college, and possibly play college volleyball as well. She has always been interested in the study of the mind and wants to pursue a major in clinical psychology. After that she wants to continue furthering her studies and be able to conduct her own research for the world to make it a better place. “ I feel confident that I’ll be able to go into the world after high school ready for any challenge that’s going to face me, especially when I have my faith behind me,” said Harburg.

Keysville: 1880 Boom Town, Second Largest City At One Time The community of Keysville, about 12 miles southeast of Plant City, is one of the oldest settlements in eastern Hillsborough County. Surprisingly, in 1880 its population was around 500, second in size only to Tampa. Keysville was settled in the early 1870s when pioneers trekked to the Alafia River’s North Prong, centered around today’s Porter Road. Typical of those first settlers were Stephen and Elizabeth Lightsey who migrated by oxen cart from Georgia. They owned a small herd of cattle and established an orange grove, along with other crops, on homesteaded property. Lightsey became known as the ‘sweet potato king’ of Keysville. It was lumber, however, that fueled Keysville’s growth. The land was heavily timbered with dense pine forests and occasional stands of oak trees. Hewn lumber was in heavy demand, and the forests around Keysville provided a large supply. The father of Keysville’s lumber industry was a Georgian: ‘Captain’ Daniel McQueen Blue. Blue was appointed as the town’s first postmaster and named the town of Keysville, in honor of US Postmaster General David Key. Captain Blue’s most significant contribution however, was in establishing a lumber mill on the south bank of the Alafia. The saw mill was driven by a large steam engine that alternately powered the lumber mill, a grist mill, and two cotton gins. His mill even changed the face of

sary supplement to their farming income. Keysville’s economy boomed in the late 19th century. After the turn of the century however, the mill and the community’s farming fortunes, both began to falter. Timber Photo courtesy of Florida Memory Project

Keysville as early log houses were torn down and rebuilt as full-porched, frame houses with lumber cut at his mill. Blue used the Alafia River to transport lumber to ports serving distant markets. His products, among many others, included small cedar slats exported to the Peninsula Pencil Factory in New York City and citrus crates that were produced in large numbers. The mill became a mainstay of the community and Keysville’s largest employer, hiring many area farmers seeking a neces-

resources became increasingly scarce and were depleted by 1918. In 1906 Blue’s mill, renamed Keysville Mill Co., closed following his death. The loss of the mill was a devastating blow to Keysville’s economy as it eliminated a source of supplemental income for some Keysville farmers. Coronet (phosphate) mines opened in 1908, providing a few replacement jobs, but the mines drew many farmers away from Keysville. By 1916, Keysville’s population dropped to a mere 85. The Great

Depression years that followed were exceedingly hard on small farmers who had little opportunity to earn additional income despite a small increase in mining jobs. Compounding farmers’ problems, Seaboard Railroad ceased operating its Keysville tracks around 1930 restricting access to markets. Roads, which could aid access, were not paved until the 1940s. A significant blow to Keysville’s small farm economy occurred in 1956 when, the ‘Strawberry’ school schedule was eliminated. A twomonth winter break allowing school kids to help their families pick strawberries was replaced with normal school scheduling. Many strawberry farmers could not afford to pay outsiders to do work previously performed by their kids. As a result, many small farmers were forced to sell their farms. Not until the 1970s did strawberry farming rebound when migrant workers helped revitalize strawberry farming, but the accumulated economic damage to Keysville had been done. Keysville, once Hillsborough County’s second largest town, had all but disappeared as a result of 50 years of economic damage to the once booming community. Charles Nelson holds a MA degree in History from George Mason University and taught as an adjunct instructor at HCC (Dale Mabry). He is also affiliated with Tampa Bay History Center as a volunteer docent, researcher and community lecturer, with an emphasis on South Hillsborough County history.

According to Colonel Clark, “The ability to continue the Flight to Honor program is totally dependent on support from our community.” The nation can never thank veterans enough for their service, but helping to fund life-changing programs like Flight to Honor is a good way to start. "I can't even begin to tell you how very wonderful yesterday's trip to D.C. was. It was a trip of a lifetime," an unnamed veteran wrote about a previous Mission. "The welcome reception when we landed was the clincher. It gave all of us some closure to some bad memories of our return home from that war." Aside from donations, the Polk City Veterans Council will also be accepting volunteers. Those interested may contact flighttohonorpolk@gmail.com to ask questions and learn how to help.

Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA As we come together as a nation to celebrate Independence Day, there is no better time to highlight Christ Church in Philadelphia. The church, which was dubbed ‘The Nation's Church,’ was a place of worship for many of our Founding Fathers and patriots, including 15 signers of the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Betsy Ross are some of the famous church members. Bronze plaques mark the pews where they sat during services. In 1695, Christ Church was built as a small wooden structure on the very site where the church sits today. Between 1727 and 1744 the church was rebuilt, and in 1754, the steeple was added, which made the church the tallest building at the time in North America. It held this title for 56 years. The church remains one of the country’s most important and beautiful 18th-century structures and representation of Georgian architecture. One of the most notable features is William Penn’s baptismal font, which is still in use today. Hanging from the ceiling is a chandelier that is still in use since its installation in 1740. The original eight bells, which proclaimed independence from England in 1776, are still rung once a week. The church serves as a unique combination of a historical site and an

active Episcopal Church, still holding services every Sunday. It is also the final resting place for many notable Americans including Charles Lee (a general in the Revolutionary War) and Robert Morris (a signer of the Declaration of Independence). Benjamin Franklin and several other signers of the Declaration are buried at a nearby cemetery that bears Christ Church’s name. Thanks to a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the church is making repairs to the church and steeple. In the last 50 years, engineers installed two steel structural supports inside Christ Church’s tower, and now there is a need for six more. The project’s estimated cost is $3 million, and the church has raised $2.5 million, including the new grant. This historical church attracts more than 250,000 visitors each year and proudly represents Philadelphia’s religious roots. Tours are given throughout the day, informing visitors about the church’s 300-plus year history and the critical role it played during the American Revolution. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. All donations support the preservation of Christ Church. Christ Church is located at 20 N. American St. in Philadelphia. Orange Tour Travels To 15 Cities Across The U.S. This Fall

Orange Tour 2019 will be traveling to 15 cities nationwide this fall. This one-day training event for church leaders, volunteers, and parents outlines a comprehensive strategy for influencing the faith of the next generation. The theme for this year, ‘It's Personal,’ not only speaks to what causes some churches to have a more significant impact but how to create a personal faith in the lives of kids and teens. Orange Tour has become a soughtafter event for thousands of family ministry teams. It offers attendees both inspiring main sessions and customized breakouts to align leaders and volunteers. Plus, it's an excellent opportunity to have fun together and network with peers. A few highly-anticipated speakers include Jon Acuff, Virginia Ward, Paula Danielle, Sam Collier, Doug Fields, Kara Powell, Joseph Sojourner, Gerald Fadaymi, Kristen Ivy and Reggie Joiner. In addition to Orange Tour, two special events will once again be held the night before the all-day affair. Lead Small Night provides fun, engaging, and practical content for small group leaders to learn how to better invest in the lives of the kids they lead. And Parent Cue Live is

Save Chick-fil-A Bill Passes Texas House, Banning Religious Discrimination

A bill that would prevent the government from targeting Chick-fil-A and other businesses for its donations to religious organizations passed the Texas State House in May and appears set to become law. The bill, SB 1978, gained momentum in the legislature after San Antonio’s City Council voted 6-4 in March to exclude

Chick-fil-A from the airport, in part due to the company’s donations to the Salvation Army and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The bill would prevent such a scenario. “A governmental entity may not take any adverse action against any person based wholly or partly on the person’s membership in, affiliation with, or contribution, donation, or other support provided to a religious organization,” the bill’s text says. It passed the House, 79-62, and needs to clear only minor hurdles before it is sent to the desk of Gov. Greg Abbott. “What we want to make sure is if you donate to the Salvation Army, you won't be labeled as a bigoted,” said Rep. Matt Krause, the bill’s sponsor. The traditional group Texas Values set up a website, SaveChickFilA.com, encouraging its supporters to contact House and Senate members about the bill.

Better Together features a rotating group of weekly female hosts including Crouch, Victoria Osteen, Christine Caine, Lisa Harper, Holly Wagner, DeeDee Freeman, Hosanna Wong, Priscilla Shirer, Alex Seely and many others. "I truly believe that when people watch this program, they will relate to at least one of the women on set," Crouch said. "We're all different, we all have different opinions, but we all have a relationship with Jesus.” The taped weekday program will target Christian women in all life-stages, from young mothers to grandmothers. What's so incredible about this show is that it isn't scripted, so the viewers are watching and hearing an actual experience. Better Together airs daily on TBN at 1:30 p.m. eastern. Embracing Summertime With Our Children Quality Books To Share As A Family

By Kelly Wise Valdes

We’ve made it halfway through the summer of 2019. Summertime is an excellent opportunity to spend quality time with our families and go deeper in our faith together. Why not use the time off from school to keep your faith strong with your children? The quality and quantity of our time matter to our children. The more time we spend together, the more likely we are to trust one another, to open up to one another and to create a foundation of love that will stand the test of time. When you think of family fun activities, you likely think of activities in the sincerest sense of the word: swimming, biking, boating—in other words, doing something that involves action. While all those things are fun, family endeavors, reading and having discussions can also help build parent-child bonds. This summer, consider trying a new kind of family fun activity—reading together. It may spark fun conversation, grow a deeper family faith and make this summer the best one yet.

Bass Pro Shops Donates 55,000 Fishing Rods And Reels To Keep Youth Fishing

By Cheryl Kehrmeyer

Bass Pro Shops in Tampa donated fishing equipment to the Scouts of America and to the Tampa Bay Junior Bass Club.

Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s are proud of their mission to inspire everyone to love, enjoy and conserve the great outdoors, and that pride was shown on June 6 during their National Donation Day which kicked off the annual Gone Fishing Event. This local event held at Bass Pro Shops, located at 10501 Palm River Rd. in Tampa, was part of the company’s nationwide event in which over 55,000 fishing rods and reels were donated to nonprofit youth groups in each store’s local community. This year, more than 500 rods and reels were donated to two organizations—the Tampa Bay

Junior Bass Club and the Scouts of America Timucua District of the Greater Tampa Bay Area Council. The equipment is part of a customer trade-in program held during the Spring Fishing Classic in February, and much of the equipment is new or gently-used high-quality rods and reels. Ronnie Cheeks, Bass Pro Shops general manager, spoke enthusiastically about the event’s focus. “The Gone Fishing Event and the National Donation Day are so important to our company and to our founder, Johnny Morris. We want to challenge kids and families to put down the phones and video games, pick up a fishing pole and enjoy making some memories together in the great outdoors.” For more information on Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s, call 6552400 or visit https://stores.basspro.com/us/fl/tamp a/10501-palm-river-rd.html.

F

or Doug and I, it’s been 24 years next month since we said ‘I Do!’. As styles have updated and changed, some traditions have also stayed the same. A marriage is a celebration of a partnership for life. It’s the merging of two families to create a stronger, better bond. The wedding day itself is that cumulation of efforts and should be savored and enjoyed. One of the first decisions should be the venue, and locally, we have three venues that offer every type of setting to make that wedding day special. Starting off at The Barn at Winthrop, which offers an intimate setting in the heart of Brandon. Nearby is the gorgeous event venue, The Regent with vast ceilings, an amazing photo staircase and chandeliers. And, nearby is Cross Creek Ranch with 5 ceremony sites and 2 reception venues nestled under the Grand Oaks and over the wooden creek bridge. No matter the wedding style, there is a local venue for every wedding occasion. To help make some of those wedding decisions easier, each venue has a planner who will assist with each step of the planning. The Regent Is A Perfect Venue For Your Wedding And Other Celebrations By Kathy L. Collins

Every bride wants their special day to be a memorable one. The perfect venue will add to the lasting memories for both the bride and groom and all who attend the big day. The Regent, located in Riverview, is one of largest venues in the area, but it can also be a small, intimate and stylish one. A bride can opt to have both the ceremony and reception at The Regent or just the reception. The Regent offers an attractive outdoor courtyard complete with a sweeping staircase and three ballrooms that can be combined to hold up to 500 people. Shannon Keil is the Executive Director for The Regent. Keil, along with Brittanny Edwards the Event Manager, and Ashley Hodson, Event Coordinator can provide as much or as little advice and counsel as the bride wants or requires. The Regent’s al a carte presentation allows the do-it-yourself bride as well as the planner guided bride to their perfect day. The Regent is a beautiful blank

This Seasons Wedding Style Guide Includes Lots Of Lace By Amy West Flora’s Bridal

Lace, lace and more lace! This season we have seen an influx of brides looking for that perfect lace wedding gown. And it’s on a global scale. So much so, all our international designers are producing lace at nearly twice the rate of any other gown material. Low backs and illusion with lace sleeves are also at the top of our regions most wanted list. There are hundreds of styles of lace and each one of them creates a different look and feel. For example, Chantilly lace, a classic, is great for creating an antique rustic style look, which so many Florida brides adore. If you are looking for a more contemporary look, a lace applique with lattice netting is becoming increasingly popular. For that art deco feel try an embroidered baroque lace pattern. There truly is a lace to match every style. A lace gown can sparkle too. Many designers are using clear beadwork and/or sequins hidden throughout the gown to give the gowns a magical shimmer, tastefully, illuminating the bride as

she walks down the aisle. If you are not a fan of all that lace can do, fear not. Simplistic crepe (think Meghan Markle), and satins are making a big comeback. At Flora’s we have found that lace or no lace, many brides want bling. Adding a sparkle belt or crystal straps to an otherwise classic simple gown will completely transform the gown into an envy worthy one of a kind. Many local stores carry head to toe ‘bling’ (crystal/ rhinestone beaded) gowns, as that is a style our region continues to adore. As far as bridal gown silhouettes go, there isn’t a specific trend one way or another. The bride will always determine the best shape based how she envisioned her wedding and how she feels in each style. While the trends may come and go, one constant remains; the most important element of a wedding gown is always the bride wearing it. When she finds that perfect dress style and trends are out the window and all the room can see is a glowing bride in her dream dress.

Choosing Wedding Rings Staff Report

The Perfect Wedding Band

Now that you have your engagement ring and settled on your venue and dress, it’s time to pick out the perfect band to accompany your left-hand sparkler. There are many factors to consider. Cost, comfort and overall style are a few of the most important ones.

Set Your Budget

Ironically, wedding bands are one of the most overlooked costs of planning a wedding — and they can be expensive. However, you can find beautiful rings in every budget. It is important to balance what you can afford with what you want to see on your hand for the rest of your life. Be sure to account for bands for both you and your significant other. Materials (gold, platinum or titanium) and gemstones will factor into the final price.

Matching Your Ring Versus Matching Your Partner’s

Answering this question will help you narrow down your choices a lot. If you want your wedding bands to match, then you need to discuss elements that both of you do (and perhaps more importantly don’t) want. Or perhaps there is a wedding band that matches your engagement ring. Be sure to discuss

your options with your partner before hitting up a jewelry store.

Try ‘Em On

Nothing will help you make a decision faster than seeing potential bands sitting next to your engagement ring. After you’ve set your budget and discussed your options with your significant other, it’s time to try on some rings. If you have the opportunity and the time, visit as many local jewelry stores as possible. You never know where you are going to find a deal and a truly breathtaking band. Plus, there is not much that beats spending a casual hour in a jewelry shop while associates bring you band after band to slip on your finger.

Throw Out Rule Book

There are no hard-and-fast rules to what type of wedding band you should choose, including choosing none at all. Stay true to your own style and budget and you will end up with a ring you are eternally happy with.

Choose A Wedding Photographer To Match Your Style Unlike your other vendors (music, flower arrangements, cake), you won’t really know what until after the fact what you are getting. Careful research and selectiveness regarding professional skills, artistic style and personal demeanor are extra important when choosing your photographer.

Step 1: Settle On A Style

Before you begin researching photographers, decide what type of photography style you prefer. That will help determine the kind of photographer you will want to shoot your wedding.

tion of photos might look like after the wedding.

Staff Report

Step 5: Review Albums With A Critical Eye

When reviewing a photographer's album, look for the key moments you want captured.

need and where your photographer is based, and packages range from $2,500 all the way up to $15,000-plus on the higher end of the spectrum. When interviewing candidates,

Step 2: Do Your Homework

Start your search by reading reviews from recent newlyweds and browsing local listings. Review potential photographers' websites and blogs to check out photos of other weddings they have shot. How do they capture the moments important to you?

Step 4: See A Few Full Wedding Albums

Ask to see two or three full galleries from real weddings they've shot (not someone else at their company) to get a better idea of what your complete collec-

Most contracts stipulate that the photographer owns the rights to all photos taken at the wedding, even the ones of you. In other words, the photographer can use them promotionally (on their website or blog, submit them for publication and even place them in ads). That also means you can't just post the digital proofs they send you—most photographers have a policy that you can only share watermarked images or images with their credit on them. Also, unless you negotiate otherwise, if you want to print the images yourselves or order an album from another source, you'll have to buy the rights to the images.

Step 9: Get The Postproduction Details

Step 3: Set Up Interviews

Meet potential photographers in person. If you like what you see on their site and fees are in your ballpark range, call to see if they're available for your wedding date. If so, go ahead and send an introductory email with a bit about you and your soon-to-be spouse, your event and the visions.

Step 8: Ask About Your Rights

Step 6: Make Sure Your Personalities Mesh

Don't underestimate the importance of liking and bonding with your photographer. Is the photographer excited by your vision when you describe it?

Step 7: Compare Packages

You won't be able to nail down an exact dollar amount until you're sure of what you want, how many albums you

ask for a general range based on the photographer's standard ‘shooting fee’ and package, plus their standard rates for the type of album you think you'll want and the amount of coverage you're hoping to book them for (day of, full weekend).

It usually takes at least a month to get all those photo proofs back from your photographer. Your photographer is shooting enormous raw files far bigger than your typical JPG, which gives your photographer greater ability to correct the photo, but it also takes a longer time to upload, process and edit those files.

Step 10: Prep Together For The DayOf

Remember that your photographer is the pro, so while it is helpful don’t spend too much time putting together a detailed shot list for them. Instead, give them an idea of what images you’d like captured (like a shot with each of your bridesmaids in addition to wedding party portraits) and let them do their thing.

Summer Wedding Planning Made Easy With Fun Additions Staff Report

There are many advantages to getting married in the summer. For starters, it is easier for people to take off work and the weather is more consistent. Make your wedding stand out by incorporating some of the following details. 1. A selfserve ice cream bar or snow cone cart. Both whimsical and refreshing, a snow cone cart or ice cream bar puts a new twist on wedding desserts. They also keep guests cool as a cucumber on a sultry summer day. Check with party rental companies to see what options they can offer. 2. Signature cocktails. You can have a signature cocktail no matter the season of your wedding. But a crisp cocktail in a bright color screams summer — not to mention many fruits and veggies are in season and at their height of flavor. Work with a local bartender to find out what’s in season to craft the best drink to reflect your tastes 3. Lawn games. The summer wed-

ding season brings many an outdoor affair. Let guests make their own fun by offering a selection of lawn games croquet and lawn dice, which work well with players sporting formal wear. 4. Sparklers. When things get late and it’s time to take your leave, do it in style by handing out sparklers for guests to light and line your path. 5. Bright bouquets. Summer was made for bold colors — and Mother Nature agrees! 6. Fun photo booth. Use a fun photo booth to give guests a special keepsake photo and something to do in between activities. Choose flowers in vivid colors like red, pink or yellow. Pick large blooms like peonies, hydrangeas or sunflowers. No matter what you decide to incorporate into your summer wedding, remember to always get quotes from as many local vendors as possible. Doing so will save money and uncover unique ideas that may help your special day stand out from the summer wedding crowd.

Honeymoon Packing 101 Staff Report

Your wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some wellearned relaxation. No matter if you’ve planned a relaxing week on the beach, adventure in the mountains or a quick city getaway, you want to make sure you bring everything you could possibly need. Make A List Making a list is the first step to ensuring nothing important gets left behind. The key is not to make your list in one sitting or just a few days before departure. You need time to come back to it. Choose things that mix and match well, and that perhaps you can get more than one use out of if you will be gone for several days. Consider Going Carry-On Only Not having to check any luggage makes traveling so much easier and saves you precious time! Think about it. Would you rather be pacing around a luggage carousel or be that much closer to sipping mai tais at the beachside bar? Try packing versatile pieces for your trip, or visit a local luggage store for things like pack-flat toiletry kits and packing

cubes that can save serious room in your suitcase. Checking A Bag No matter how inconvenient, there are some bags you just need to check. Maybe your honeymoon is an extended trip or you will be hitting several destinations in varying climates. Whatever the reason, checking at least one bag might be your best bet. If this is the situation, planning your carry-on actually becomes more important in case your checked bag doesn’t arrive with you. Consider adding travel insurance to make sure you’re covered. Always pack at least one spare outfit, comfortable flats, a swimsuit and another spare outfit appropriate for dinner. This should get you through the first few days without your checked luggage before it is either found and delivered to you, or give you enough time to purchase replacements of essential items at your destination.
