Nativity Catholic Church Partners With The Sheriff Office’s Homeless Initiative

In the Tampa-Hillsborough area, approximately 1,650 men, women and children are homeless. These are individuals who are sleeping in cars, on the streets or in transitional housing and shelters. In 2010, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) enacted the Homeless Initiative to help solve this issue and partners with various social service agencies, businesses and nonprofit organizations. A deputy is assigned to five different districts and works with the local community to find long-term solutions. In addition to the daily interactions, the HCSO and Tampa Police Department partner with local churches and organizations to hold quarterly outreaches. On June 18, Nativity Catholic Church of Brandon opened up its campus to serve 150 homeless people. The homeless were bussed in, walked or were transported by deputies. "The homeless population in our area is growing, and there are no shelters in Eastern Hillsborough County to help these individuals," explained Bonnie Ussery, the director of Pastoral Care at Nativity. "I see them (homeless) come through Pastoral Care on a weekly basis. Much of the homeless population is affected by alco-

Mike Rowe made a surprise appearance at My Warrior’s Place, a special military retreat center in Ruskin, to surprise its founder, Kelly Kowall. Kowall is one of those amazing individuals that turned her personal tragedy into a lifetime commitment of helping others. Her son, Army Spc. Corey Kowall was killed in Afghanistan in 2009. A series of signs and miracles led Kowall to find a way to honor her son's memory and make a positive difference in the lives of others dealing with grief or other postmilitary issues. Unbeknownst to Kowall, volunteer Craig Gross nominated her for Mike Rowe’s show, Returning Returning The Favor, hosted by Mike Rowe, The Favor (RTF). Watching the episode, the audience can clearly see the moment Kowall realized that this was no ordinary day. However, she still had no idea how extraordinary the day would become. My Warrior’s Place is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit retreat center located directly on the Little Manatee River. The entire compound is a labor of love every day for Kowall, along with the dedicated volunteers who are needed on a daily basis. “It’s a place of refuge and healing from the tragedies that so many military and families endure,” said Kowall. She explained to Rowe on the show that many military families find peace and healing on the water—fishing, boating, kayaking or canoeing. Rowe was so impressed by what he experienced at

Husband And Wife Team To Co-Pastor At Grace Community “All are welcome, all are loved,” said Reverend Erick Ashley of Grace Community United Methodist Church. “It is a church where every person can find a place and a purpose, all centered around a life lived in Jesus.” Grace Community is pleased to announce the appointment of Reverend Tracie Ashley, the wife of current pastor Reverend Erick. On June 30, she preached her first message at Grace Community. The appointing of clergy couples to co-pastor is a growing trend among United Methodist Churches. Currently, the Florida Annual Conference has 29 clergy couples with 15 of them serving as co-pastors. The model of clergy couples serving together has been successful and is producing much fruit for the Kingdom of God. “I began feeling that my time serving Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Bradenton was coming to a close, and I

Women In The Bible
By Debora Coty Editor’s Note: We regret that this column was inadvertently altered in last month’s edition. Apologies to our readers for any misunderstandings that may have occurred. Here is the column, in its entirety.
In a recent study of women in the Bible, I was struck by how many women Paul knew personally who were stalwart behind-the-scenes stabilizers of the early church (just like today, right, sisters?). Men seem to get most of the limelight for building the early church–and I do NOT want to take anything away from them for they certainly deserve credit where credit is due–but let’s never forget that women were important too. The first European Christian church began with a women’s Bible study. Praying, serving, loving ladies not only helped established what became the modern church; they were the invisible glue that held it together through the centuries. And I’m totally stoked that Paul recognized that. Three of the nine women he gave shout-outs to in Romans, chapter 16, really stood out to me. In verse one, Paul commends Phoebe, “a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea.” First of all, that city, Cenchrea–where have I heard that before? Ah, yes, it was the port near Corinth where Paul got a haircut (Acts 18:18). Must have been a humdinger of a stylist for Paul to document the occasion in the Holy Scriptures. That and this are the only two times it’s ever mentioned in the Bible. Feel free to add that to your list of interesting Bible trivia. Secondly, that word ‘servant’ just begged for a deeper look. After all, don’t we all feel like servants to our churches when we commit to a ministry? Yet it does go deeper than that. The NASB interprets the Greek word ‘prostatis’ as servant, but other translations use the word ‘helper’ or ‘protectress.’ I LOVE THAT. Protectress. Roll it across your tongue with me. Kinda makes you want to roar, doesn’t it? I love being a protectress, don’t you? We women are well-trained protectresses–we’ve learned how to protect our children, spouses, homes and reputations. And apparently, we’re also called to protect our church. Not to slam it, ridicule it, or undermine it. To promote
it. To build it up. To protect it so that our body of believers can draw others to Jesus. Great new perspective. Am I actively protecting my church? Are you? Then ‘Phoebe’ rang a bell. I recalled that Phoebe is the name of the Moon Goddess from ancient Greek mythology (I’ve been fascinated by Greek mythology since childhood). Sure enough, a little research revealed that Paul’s Phoebe was likely named after the Greek Goddess Phoebe, indicating that she was probably a Greek/Gentile Christian; as opposed to being a Jew like many of the early believers. Phoebe was a non-Jewish convert to loving Jesus. Like me. Like you. I like her already. Reading on, I came to verse 3: “Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus.” Wait. Prisca … who is Prisca? Weren’t Priscilla and Aquila the go-to married couple in leadership who were mentioned numerous times by Peter, Mark, and Paul? Sure enough, it turns out to be the same chick. Hmm. Maybe Prisca was Paul’s term of endearment for Priscilla. They were good friends. Buds. She probably called him Paulie. (Ha!) I can dig that. After all, I’m Debora but my friends call me Deb or Debbie. My mama calls me Debs. My man calls me Muffin Face (the romantic fool). I guess we gals answer to all kinds of names. Including protectress. (Just can’t say that enough – it’s my new favorite word!) But my point here is that we ARE gals. Women who love and serve Jesus just as much as men folk. And because of that, we’re important. Jesus knew that when he appeared first to his women followers after the resurrection. The very ones who didn’t run for their lives and desert him like his disciples did. Therefore, I want to be the best protectress of His church that I possibly can. How about you? What would it entail for you to become a protectress for your body of believers?

The Mighty Miracles Of Jesus Jesus Healed The Centurion's Servant
By Kelly Wise Valdes
During His ministry, Jesus performed more than 40 miracles, including healing the sick, changing the natural elements of nature and even raising people from the dead. A miracle is considered an event that occurs outside the bounds of natural law. Each month, we will take a closer look at one of His miracles to understand the depth of His love for us. Understanding the miracles of Jesus can change your life, and it all begins with believing through faith. In Matthew 4:12-16, we learn of a miracle Jesus performed on behalf of a Roman soldier, also known as a centurion. This was quite unusual during biblical times because Jewish leaders were usually not fond of Roman soldiers. Jesus had walked down from the mountainside outside of Capernaum, where He had just delivered what would become one of the most famous sermons in history. He was met by a small group of Jewish elders with an urgent request. There was a Roman centurion whose servant was sick and dying. The centurion had asked the elders to go to Jesus on his behalf to ask if Jesus would be willing to heal his servant. The Jewish elders knew it was an odd request. One of the elders said to Jesus, "He is worthy to have you do this for him, for he loves our nation, and he is the one who built us our synagogue." This was also uncommon because
Roman soldiers were not generally fond of Jews. Earlier, Jesus had preached for hours on the importance of loving one’s enemies, so naturally, Jesus immediately left with them toward the centurion's home. As they reached the house, another small crowd approached and stopped Jesus and the Jewish elders. Some observers thought the servant must have died. Then a representative of the intercepting group said to Jesus, "Teacher, I have a message for you from my Roman friend. He says, Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore, I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. “ Jesus looked toward His disciples, and the small crowd of people who had followed Him down the mountain, and He said loud enough for everyone to hear, "I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” And at that moment, the centurion's servant was healed. Jesus never even entered the house. The centurion was one of the most unlikely persons to amaze Jesus. He was a Gentile probably from a pagan upbringing. He was Roman and stationed in Palestine to enforce the Emperor’s rules. He was a man of war. Regardless, this soldier came to Jesus on behalf of his servant with total faith in Jesus’ ability to heal. The centurion is also a reminder that "man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). Jesus is not as impressed with titles, degrees and achievements but instead is pleased by those who believe in Him. His acceptance of us is not based on religion, good character or good works because none of us are worthy. But, it’s our faithfulness that is pleasing to Him.

The Great Florida Outdoors - Caladesi Island State Park By Dr. Robert Norman On a recent field trip to Caladesi Island State Park with the Friends of Pinellas Master Naturalists, I once again enjoyed the magic of this national treasure. We gathered and took the ferry over with leaders Jeanne Murphy, Brian Lane and guest instructor Marty Main, the founder of the Florida Master Naturalists Program. Once we all got off the boat, we listened to nature talks and explored this unique coastal park. The upland habitat is a maritime hammock with live oaks, cabbage palms and wax myrtle and is entwined with mesic flatwoods of slash pines and saw palmettos. We found beach elders, sea oats, flowering cacti and robust mangrove trees. We saw ospreys and gopher tortoises, all part of the Caladesi Island wildlife community. We were eager to head to the beach and we moved on to explore on a pristine May morning. Once we arrived, we explored the wrack, formed when natural material washes onto the beach and includes sea grasses, algae and some inverte-
brates such as sponges and soft corals. The wrack serves as its own ecosystem within the greater coastline, providing a food chain of nutrients for our fellow inhabitants to live, feed and prosper. As the wrack decomposes, it goes back into the surf and serves as a nursery for a variety of fish species. A wrack that is deposited higher may play an important role in the creation of dunes. Each of us discussed various items we found during our explorations, from turtle fossils to egg casings. Several of the participants offered their expertise in birding and migration patterns, tidal influences and natural history. Reefs formed by oysters and extensive beds of manatee, shoal,\ and turtle grasses could be seen offshore. Chapel had grown from 20 members to 36 and continued to grow during the 1880s. It was, however, not destined to stay on the south side of the Alafia. Because of the inconvenience of ferry travel, the small community on the northern shore grew much faster than Peru. Potential residents simply stopped before crossing the river when establishing their new homes. By 1893, the largest percentage of Lesley Chapel’s membership lived on the north side of the river. One year later, in 1894, pebble phosphate was discovered a short distance west of today’s US 301 Bridge, creating a short-lived economic boom on the north side of the river. That little settlement became the town of Riverview and quickly outgrew the small town of Peru. In that same year, a visiting Methodist evangelist raised money to
build a new church on the north shore. This new church, although poorly constructed, served as a beacon for the majority of Lesley Chapel members. The building fell during an 1899 storm.
Undaunted, the membership immediately replaced that structure in 1900. In the following year, the first bridge across the Alafia was built, replacing the ferry. The new, substantial church building and the new bridge permanently established Riverview’s Methodist congregation on the north side of the river. That location has served as the sole home for Riverview’s Methodist congregation since 1900. Today’s sanctuary was built in the early 1960s and in 2021, the church will celebrate 175 years of service to the community. He is also affiliated with Tampa Bay History Center as a volunteer docent, researcher and community lecturer, with an emphasis on South Hillsborough County history.

“God, He Got a Plan for You”—Steve Harvey Gives Eight College Students Full Tuition Scholarships
TV host Steve Harvey will be paying full college tuition for eight students attending Kent State University. Harvey awarded the eight scholarships to Kent State University’s incoming freshmen. He told the students in a video that God is with them. Harvey is a Kent State alumnus. The awards are about $23,000 per student. Last week, the eight students appeared on Harvey’s show, Steve, and he told the young men they were blessed to have been chosen for the awards. “This is a really, really cool moment for me. I want y’all to take advantage of this, man. Do something with yourself. Don’t blow this shot,” Harvey said. “Just think about this for a moment. Live Like You Mean It Is Your Experience Of faith “A Time Of Refreshing?’ Dive In!
By Derek Maul “So that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord…” – Acts 3:19
Rebekah and I recently wrapped up another wonderful week hosting our six and seven-year-old grandchildren. As usual, it was one more extremely full day featuring fun and play and work and learning. To be accurate, we finished this particular visit with a dramatic splash! Our friends Trish and Dave gave us access to their swimming pool and (on an unreasonably hot day) there is little that is more fun than the constant noise, movement, silliness, laughter, relaxation and refreshing coolness of an hour or so in the water. The experience makes me think about the biblical concept of, ‘Times of Refreshing.’ Think about it. Is the way you interact with church - your experience of worship, of communion, of fellowship, of giving, of learning, of mission, of service - a time of refreshing? Do you engage faith and living as a follower of Jesus in a way that reminds you of being immersed in a pool full of clear, cool, relaxing and invigorating water? Jesus describes the quality of life he offers as a buoyant fountain of
refreshment, literally springing up: “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). When Jesus talked with the woman at the well he simply offered her a long, refreshing drink of living water. When Peter started preaching in Acts 3 he said that following Jesus is like experiencing the blessing of a deep refreshment. In this contemporary world, fraught with confrontation, conflict, anger, bitterness, misunderstanding, prejudice, greed, avarice and more, I cannot recommend anything better or more effective or more healing than a deep immersion in Jesus. Jump in, dive in, even wade in slowly. However you come, just come. This is our time of refreshing. Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications.
