Dr. Corey Abney has been named the new senior pastor at Bell Shoals Baptist Church. Bell Shoals has been without a senior pastor since February 2019, when Dr. Stephen Rummage was called to pastor a church in Oklahoma City after serving in Brandon for nearly 10 years. As senior pastor, Dr. Abney will lead the multi-campus congregation’s vision and strategy and will preach on Sundays at the Brandon campus, located at 2102 Bell Shoals Rd. His first Sunday at the Brandon campus will be December 22. Presbyterian Church Of Bloomingdale Is Growing And Serving The Community

Rendering of the Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale adult daycare center to assist senior citizens with memory loss. The church is launching a capital campaign to raise funds for the daycare center.

The Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale (PCoB) may seem unassuming from the outside; however, it is bustling with activities and excited about the future plans for serving the community around it. Reverend Susan Hill, the lead pastor, is enthusiastic about the church's future. "My favorite part about Presbyterian Church of Bloomingdale is the people in the congregation," said Pastor Hill. “We are an open and welcoming church.” With a history dating back almost 36 years, PCoB has been a mainstay in the Brandon area. In August of 1986, a congregation of 46 people attended worship at a local daycare center, and PCoB was formalized in April 1989. By November 1990, the church had secured land at the current site and broke ground for a facility that would serve the small, committed

congregation. The first service at the present location was held on May 26, 1992. The parishioners are not only committed to their faith and their church, but they are also committed to serving others. “We are a church family in which everyone is participating by being the hands, feet and heart of Christ,” said Pastor Hill. She continued, "We are very mission-focused in meeting the needs of the community and the greater world. We are the home for Boy Scout Troop 61, the nonprofit Seeds of Hope, eight different support groups and a physical fitness group.” In addition, the church is very involved with the Honduran Presbyterian Mission. The congregation supports the Honduran children and youth with educa-

sons with memory loss. Recent research has indicated that one out of every five people will be affected with memory loss. “We have many in our community who need this daytime assistance for a family member,” said Pastor Hill. “PCoB’s mission is to meet the needs of senior citizens, persons with disabilities and social injustice with compassion, shelter and dedication to which we are called as God’s people.” The capital campaign to build the adult daycare center on the church grounds will kick off on Thursday, January 2, 2020. There will also be a church yard sale on Saturday, February 29, with proceeds going to support the Honduras mission. The church is located at 710 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon. gradually morphed into the audacious creature he was meant to be. Today, when he chases squirrels, fetches Mr. Squeaky and holds his spindly little tail erect, I proudly announce to passers-by, “Yaz is a real dog now.” And sometimes on those days when I’m busting my buttons over how incredible his transformation is, I’ll think, “Wow—I wonder if Papa God is saying the same thing about me. I hope He is. I want so desperately to be a REAL Christ-reflector, yet so often I feel like I’m just a wooden imitation.” But you know what? The more time I spend basking in His unconditional love and affirming attention, the more secure I feel and the more Christlike I become. It’s probably going to take thousands more hours of training, but one day I’m determined to become the real deal. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you,” (Psalm 32:8, NIV).

Six months ago, Yaz came to live with us. He was a mystery mutt with no history of his previous two years on this earth. All we knew was that he had been living from paw to muzzle on the streets before he landed in an animal rescue. Yaz was afraid of everything and everybody. His tail was tucked between his legs 24/7; he cowered pitifully at every noise and fled in terror from each person or animal we encountered on our neighborhood walks. The poor little fellow never barked, wouldn’t fetch or play with toys and hid his food. He looked totally confused when a chew bone was placed before him, like what in the world am I supposed to do with this? Yaz didn’t seem like a real dog. At least, no dog I’d ever known. I began thinking of him as a sort of wooden Pinocchio puppet who wanted to be real but didn’t know how. Before But something remarkable began to happen. The more time Yaz spent basking in my unconditional love and affirming attention, the more secure he seemed to feel and the more doglike he became. He began to bloom in his magnificent dogginess before my eyes. After Yaz

In his first headlining tour, Pat Barrett, the singer/songwriter of Build My Life and The Way, will perform at Southeastern University on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 7 p.m. Joining Barrett on stage is the university’s own student music ministry, SEU Worship. “This is wild. I’m so excited to announce that I’m heading out on my firstever headlining tour across the U.S. this spring,” said Barrett. “I’m hitting 11 cities, and I’d love for you to join me at one of these worship nights.” Barrett, a worship leader from Atlanta’s Grace Midtown Church, is also the former lead singer and songwriter for the band Housefires. While in that group, Barrett co-wrote and performed the song Good Good Father. In 2016, the GRAMMY® Awardwinning artist Chris Tomlin recorded Good Good Father on his Never Lose Sight album. The song remained in the number one spot on the ‘Hot Christian’ Billboard chart for seven weeks and subsequently earned the title ‘Song of the Year’ at the 2016 GMA Dove Awards. In 2018, Tomlin signed Barrett to his new record label, Bowyer & Bow—Barrett being the first. To date, SEU Worship has released six albums, with its new

album Eden to Eternity scheduled for release in February 2020. Led by David Cook, the campus worship pastor, the group is a collection of students and staff from Southeastern University. Cook, an alumnus of Southeastern, not only lends his musical talents but his experience serving on the worship team from the acclaimed Hillsong Church in Sydney, Australia. The concert is being held at the university’s Bush Chapel, with its doors opening at 6:15 p.m. Tickets range from $15-$45 (excludes service fees) and can be purchased on Eventbrite. All seating is part of general admission and on a first-come, firstserved basis. Children 3 and under are free if sitting on a lap. Early entry tickets are also available and allow guests to enter at 6 p.m. to obtain better seats. New Ministry Connects And Supports Local Military Families

By Stacy Huisman

Grace Community United Methodist Church, located at 5708 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Lithia, has launched a new ministry to support military families in the community. Military Connect at Grace Community is designed to connect military families with the community while supporting them throughout the chaos of living a highly mobile lifestyle. The Military Connect program now offers military families items they may need while transitioning and a sponsor program with resources for those new to the area. Pastor Erick Ashley believes the ministry was another way to share the mission of his church. “We started this program because our mission at Grace Community United Methodist is to create a community where all people can experience God’s transforming grace. We want to be a church for all people, no matter what, and our military families are a part of that community.” Lithia and the surrounding areas have the second highest military family population in the Tampa Bay area. Whether it’s due to the highly rated schools or beautiful neighborhoods, military families represent a large percentage of the families in the community. Military Connect offers support to local military families and their unique, highly mobile, family lifestyle. Erin Lorenz, a military spouse and member of Grace Community,

wanted to help other families like her own. “We started this program as an attempt to reach military families in a very real way. One thing Grace was proud of was their military connection. In reality, the connection was simply that they had members who were either retired or active duty. There was no specific outreach for military families. A few of us came together to determined what we could create that would allow Grace to truly say they have a military connection.” Military Connect at Grace Community offers a Loan Locker for those families who are in the process of moving to the area or are transitioning out. With blow-up mattresses, cooking pots, utensils and more, the Loan Locker is available to provide the comforts of home throughout the chaos of moving. Grace Community also offers a sponsorship program to match up new military-connected youth and their families with members of the church who have similar interests. The sponsorship program is a great way to find the inside scoop on the community and meet new people. It is known for its robust youth program Refuge, which includes military-connected kids who are looking for those first new friends and a safe place to connect. Brenda Wade Team Partners With Local Businesses To Donate $18,000 To Local Charities This is the season of giving and Brenda Wade and her Real Estate Team have focused on giving back to the community in small and large ways, year after year, season after season. They have given over $65,000 in the last seven years through their ‘Partners in Giving’ events, plus additional giving exceeds $10,000 annually to other local charities. Brenda believes in giving back where she lives and works and said, “We are so fortunate to live in a great community and if everyone gives a little, no one goes without.” One of their favorite ‘giving back’ events of the year is their ‘Partners in Giving’ fundraiser. Brenda and her team just hosted their Seventh Annual ‘Partners in Giving’ event where Brenda and her agents spent a day learning from business associates who donate money to the chosen charity. Brenda matches every dollar the business partners contribute so together they have a larger impact in the community. The Brenda Wade Team wants to be the most knowledgeable and giving team in real estate, and to work together with likeminded companies and individuals to give back to our community. Brenda said, “Our goal was to exceed the $12,600 amount we raised last year, and we were so very excited to raise and donate $18,000 divided between two local charities, Seeds of Hope, Inc. and LifeCare. Seeds of Hope has been in the Brandon/Valrico/Lithia community for over nine years and began with local resident Leda Eaton helping her then high school students receive meaningful community service hours. That was the beginning of the FishHawk Turkey Trot and from that Seeds of Hope was created to

use the money generated to help alleviate local hunger. The organization has maintained its original commitment to providing meaningful community service for students but has grown as an organization to combat hunger in three ways by providing weekend backpacks of food for school children, boxes of food to families on Thursdays, and a weekly mobile pantry aimed at short term food relief. Eaton is proud of the impact the charity has had, “Before Hurricane Irma, we were a food relief organization. After Hurricane Irma, we added disaster relief to our resume. It’s not something I ever would have planned but am so thankful we were there. Larger organizations with cumbersome rules and regulations couldn’t do what we did. We targeted the people who needed/deserved help, took people shopping for personal items, provided daily hot meals, washed clothes & provided showers. So many volunteers stepped up. It was amazing to be a part of the overwhelming groundswell of community support.” For more information, visit www.sohopefl.org. LifeCare, now called Choices, is all about babies so this ministry is near and dear to Brenda Wade’s heart, as she and

her husband have been beyond blessed with two grandbabies this year. LifeCare of Brandon /Choices has served families in the Brandon Community for over three decades. They reach out to families in the midst of pregnancy decisions with compassion, help and hope. They have worked with thousands of families over the last 32 years supporting them in their pregnancies, childbirth, parenting, and life skills. They educate each person who comes in for a pregnancy test on abortion, adoption, and parenting. All of their services are free, confidential, and available to everyone. Their pregnancy medical clinics are named CHOICES with locations in Brandon and Ruskin. These clinics are where families receive free pregnancy tests, limited ultrasounds, and ongoing support. They work with families throughout their pregnancy and until their baby is a year old teaching them about healthy pregnancies and positive parenting. They also provide support to the 43% of women who have experienced the heartbreak of a past abortion because

they believe healthy families create healthy communities. We envision a culture where women and men faced with pregnancy decisions are transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and empowered to choose life for their unborn children and abundant life for their families. For more information please visit www.EmpoweredToChoose.net Brenda is so very thankful to this year's “Partners in Giving” business partners for serving her clients all year long and graciously pulling alongside of she & the Team in support of the people served by Seeds of Hope and LifeCare/Choices: Adela’s Pro Cleaning Service, All American Title, Brian Hodgers of Complete Choice Insurance, Chad & Bill Kalgren of Kyzo Unlimited LLC Painting & Pressure Washing, Couture Painting, Gonzalez Roofing, Hank & Mary Lobdell of Radiant Property Inspections, Hillsborough Title, Janelle Weeden of Old Republic Home Warranty, Joel Meek of Meek Insurance Group, Jon Howard of American Mortgage Service Co, Marie Gilmore of Osprey Observer, Mike Yeager of Buyer’s Choice Home Inspection, Patrick Latimer & Erica Guthrie of United Mutual Funding Corp., Pilka & Associates, P.A. The Mighty Miracles Of Jesus

A Mother’s Plea For Her Daughter’s Healing

By Kelly Wise Valdes

During His ministry, Jesus performed more than 40 miracles, including healing the sick, changing the natural elements of nature and even raising people from the dead. A miracle is considered an event that occurs outside the bounds of natural law. Each month we will take a closer look at one of His miracles to understand the depth of His love for us. Understanding the miracles of Jesus can change your life, and it all begins with believing through faith. One of the most notable passages in the New Testament describes a miracle of a desperate mother begging Jesus Christ to miraculously heal her young daughter, who was possessed by a demon. This miracle is described in both the Gospels of Mark and Matthew. As explained in the Gospel of Matthew, “A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, ‘Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.’ Jesus did not answer a word. So His disciples came to Him and urged Him, ‘Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.’ He answered, ‘I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.’ The woman came and knelt before Him. ‘Lord, help me!’ she said. He replied, ‘It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.’ ‘Yes, it is, Lord,’ she said. ‘Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.’ Then Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’ And her daughter was healed at that moment.” When this desperate mother approached Jesus, she broke every rule of society. This was a time when

Jews did not associate with non-Jews. A non-Jewish woman approaching a Jewish man was extremely taboo. Clearly, this woman was desperate for her daughter’s healing. Jesus’ comment about taking children’s bread and tossing it to the dogs may seem cruel outside of the context in which it was spoken. The phrase ‘children’s bread’ refers to the Old Testament promise that God would help the children of Jewish people of Israel that faithfully worshiped God rather than idols. When Jesus uses the word ‘dogs,’ he was not comparing her to an actual canine, but instead using the terminology that Jews referred to the Gentile people of that time, who often lived in ways that upset faithful Jews. Even after Jesus initially did not respond to the woman, she remained steadfast in her faith. She again asked Jesus to heal her daughter. Jesus was impressed by the mother’s display of great faith and healed the girl. This mother received a miracle for her daughter because her faith was tireless, even in the face of discouraging circumstances. Faith is the precursor to change. This woman’s courageous and determined faith is the kind of faith God wants for us. If we’re going to see a change in our own lives, we must have the faith to persevere. Many of us have felt this sort of desperation in our own lives. The kind of desperation that will make us reach out in bold faith. Sometimes, God doesn’t always answer our prayers right away. We can learn from this mother that when you believe in faith and reach out in continuous belief, God will see your faithfulness to Him.

Hooked On Christian Books Focus On Family For 2020

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Now that we’ve entered into 2020, many of us are looking at annual resolutions that include exercising, eating healthier and losing weight. And, as we all know, many of these resolutions don’t last very long because of our busy lives, including our children, work and activities. But what if you created a resolution to focus on your family this year? With the help of family-friendly daily or weekly devotionals, you can nourish your family’s health with faith and fun. Regular family devotions give us a chance to learn, discuss and grow spiritually. Whether it be at bedtime, around the dinner table or a Friday night, I encourage you to consider committing to a family devotion this year. Let’s look at new beginnings, not resolutions.

One Year of Dinner Table Devotions & Discussion Starters: 365 Opportunities to Grow Closer to God By Nancy Guthrie

Between sports practice, music lessons and homework, we can feel like our days pass by without ever really talking with each other about the most important matters of life and faith. This family devotional serves up a year’s worth of daily truths from God’s Word to chew on and apply to real life. Going beyond Bible stories, your whole family will enjoy discussing biblical words and themes at a level those from 5 to 95 will understand

365 Read-Aloud Bedtime Bible Stories By Daniel Partner

Children love Bible stories, especially when they are written in ageappropriate, easy-to-understand language. This daily devotional Bible storybook is written specifically for ages 3 to 8. It has a year’s supply of the best-loved Bible stories that will delight your children with excitement, adventure, history and spiritual truths. At the end of each story, you’ll even find questions to help stimulate discussion to help precious young minds understand God’s Word.

Jesus Always: 365 Devotions for Kids By Sarah Young

An entire year’s worth of childfriendly devotions for children 8 to 12 focused on establishing lifelong contentment and joy in God. Adapted from Young’s bestseller and featuring the same daily theme as the adult version, each reading includes an easyto-understand message, Scripture passage and Bible references for further study. This is an excellent addition to your children’s routine.

The Very Best, Hands-On, Kinda Dangerous Family Devotions By Tim Shoemaker

Regular family devotions are important. Unfortunately, they’re often…boring. But what if devotions looked less like sitting still and listening to someone read and more like, say, electrocuting a pickle? Or converting a leaf blower into a toilet paper launcher? These hands-on, totally unforgettable object lessons are not only more fun than other family devotions. So, get out the safety goggles and start bringing the truths of Scripture to life in your household.

Sports Connection Crusaders Football Makes Playoff Run And Sets 34 School Records Seffner Christian Academy had a record-breaking 2019 season after a rocky start. The Crusaders have made huge strides as a program, reaching the playoffs for the third time in four seasons. This season was no different, as they reeled off 10 straight wins after losing their first three, losing in the regional championship to eventual state champion Champagnat Catholic. The Crusaders had high expectations this season after having their best season in school history, going undefeated in the regular season and finishing 11-1 overall in 2018. They battled injury and a tough schedule in 2019, finishing 10-4. Head Coach Travis Puelo said that all of the Crusaders’ accomplishments were a team effort. They set or broke 34 team and individual school records. He credits his offensive line, anchored by Titus Mullen, with being a major strength. “What makes me proud is how we came together with all the adversity we faced with suspensions and kids that were hurt, seeing these kids come together, this is the most unified team that I have ever coached in my life,” said Puelo. “At the very beginning of 2019 we came up with the mantra ‘raise the standard,’ and it’s just ironic that 10, 11 months later we can sit back and say that this group of kids truly did raise the standard.” They were led by senior Navy signee quarterback Isiah Knowles,

who had an outstanding season. Knowles broke his own school record of passing yards in a season that he set in 2018, despite missing the first four games due to an injury. He also owns the school record for most passing yards in a career with 7,126 yards and 91 total touchdowns. Coach Puelo considers running back Justin Stubbs the heart and soul

of his team. The senior had the bulk of the carries with 209, while picking up 1,628 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. He accomplished those feats while not ever coming off the field, playing offense, defense and special teams. He broke the school record of most rushing yards and touchdowns in his career with 45 touchdowns and over 3,100 rushing yards. Stubbs and his team-

mate Michael Trigg were named coMOPs (Most Outstanding Players) at the banquet by Puelo. Co-MOP Michael Trigg was an asset for the Crusaders this season. The two-sport star had many different roles, playing wildcat quarterback, running back, receiver and defense. He filled in for an injured Knowles as quarterback for four games, completing 24 attempts for 242 yards and two passing touchdowns. As a running back, he had 196 yards and five rushing touchdowns. At his natural hybrid tight end position where he was an AllState selection last season, he had 82 receptions for 1,232 yards and 16 touchdowns, which are school records as well. He also had 11 sacks on defense with 83 total tackles and an interception. According to Coach Puelo, the junior has around 1520 Division 1 college offers, with two being from SEC powers LSU and Alabama. Knowles and Stubbs, along with four seniors, will leave Seffner Christian as a part of the winningest class in school history. They have set a precedent for the future of the program. Next season, Seffner Christian will have the largest senior class in the school’s history with 15. “We are extremely excited about the opportunity that’s ahead of us,” said Puelo.

Former Red Sox AllStar Manny Ramirez Finds God, Enrolls In Seminary

Former Major League Baseball player Manny Ramirez is best known as a star athlete for the 2004 Red Sox team that broke the ‘Curse of the Bambino’ by winning the World Series and for his on- and off-the-field antics. Now, Ramirez sees the damage he created through many of his selfish actions. He has apologized to Boston fans and revealed that he came to faith in Jesus and has enrolled in seminary to study the Bible. Ramirez says that he has become a Christian. “What I’m doing now, I preach. That’s what I do. Go into hospitals just to preach and teach the people the Bible.” He also explained that he enrolled in seminary because he wants to further learn the Word of God. Ramirez, who currently sits 15th on the all-time home runs list with 555, explained that he knows it does not matter in light of eternity. He said, “When God calls, you should humble yourself and you can see. Like, I hit all those home runs and it doesn’t mean anything. It’s something that I really cannot explain.” Describing himself as a ‘Reformed Baptist,’ he has devoted himself to

Ramirez is listed as a board member with Planted Ministries, whose mission is to work for “a spiritual awakening across Latin America.”

23,000 Cambodians Hear The Gospel At Franklin Graham Festival

More than 23,000 Cambodians heard the Gospel, and 1,396 decided to give their life to Christ during a two-day Franklin Graham Festival last month in Cambodia, a nation that is 98 percent Buddhist. It was the largest Christian outreach ever in the country. The ‘Love Phnom Penh Festival with Franklin Graham’ was held in the same country where Christianity was nearly eliminated during the Khmer Rouge—a genocide in the 1970s that sought to eradicate religion and develop a 'master race' under the leader-

ship of Pol Pot. It was the focus of the film The Killing Fields. An estimated two million people died, and only about 200 Christians survived the atrocities, according to a press release. Missionaries fled during the genocide. “The Holy Spirit has touched our city and entire land. We are thankful

that people heard the Gospel that Jesus is the Truth, Way and Life,” said Sin Somnang, pastor of Fellowship Church of Pochentong and the festival’s general chairman. “This will be a blessing for our country and our spiritual legacy to be remembered for the next generation through the festival.” Local churches will follow up with those who made decisions.

Nickelodeon Star Kel Mitchell Shares That He Is Now A Youth Pastor

Former Nickelodeon comedy actor Kel Mitchell recently announced that he has become a youth pastor at a church in California. Mitchell is known for his roles in the ‘90s sketch comedy show All That and sitcom Kenan & Kel

with current SNL cast member Kenan Thompson. He also went on to star in the movie Good Burger. But his career struggled to take flight after those roles, and he dipped into depression in 2015. “I have been through so many ups and downs in my life,” Mitchell said on his website. “Suicidal, divorce, drug and alcohol usage, deep in sin, dealing with the lost (sic) of [loved] ones to gang violence, debt, hurt, pain, vanity, lust, heartbreak, feeling lost looking for answers. I have seen, felt and been in all types of sin and have been done wrong by others.” After his divorce, Mitchell felt he hit rock bottom. As the grandson of a pastor, he realized that he needed to turn to Christ to find peace and healing. “Let go of your past, be a new creature in Christ!” Mitchell said. “I have always known God, but now I

have a true understanding of who He is and why I am here, and why God has kept me safe, and sinful ways are no longer around me because I am surrounded with the love of Jesus, and I have allowed him to make the decisions in my life. If you are ready to admit your need for a clean slate, the God of second chances is waiting to give it to you.”

Live Like You Mean It We must follow the star or we will lose our way in the dark.

Addiction Recovery Program Coming To New Hope UMC

By Amanda Boston

By Derek Maul

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” – John 8:12 I am fascinated with light, especially as a representation of God and what it teaches us about Jesus. The Magi from the east followed a light in the sky, traveling until it finally led them to the newborn king. I love the idea that maybe God set them out on their journey possibly before Jesus was even conceived. Did the star first appear when Christ was born, or in preparation or anticipation? Was it just a pinprick of light to discern or a spectacular show? Was it light from a comet passing close to Earth in real time? Or was it from countless light-years across the galaxy, light that had to travel through time in order to reach those people in that place at that time? Then there was the angel who delivered the birth announcement to the shepherds, joined by a heavenly host singing glory to God. I can imagine the flood of brilliant light! Light is not only illumination, but energy. When we follow Jesus, we

connect with the central core of light and energy that created and sustains the universe. “I am the light of the world!” Jesus is also the energy and the power. Jesus not only lights the way, Jesus is The Way. One morning, walking before the sun rose, I watched the shadows and the dim shapes around me turn into trees and flowers and grass and paths, taking on colors that became more vibrant as the light passed over the horizon. Does color even exist absent the light? I wonder what is left when we remove ourselves from the light that Jesus brings—the energy and the power and the life? “I am the light of the world,” Jesus said. “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. New Hope UMC will begin offering classes to help adults and teens battle addictions.

Addiction is a mental disorder manifesting itself in many forms—such as substance abuse, pornography and much more. Despite negative repercussions, an addict repeatedly engages in the behavior. An estimated 20 million Americans, over the age of 12, struggle with at least one addiction. Sadly, only about 10 percent seek treatment. On Tuesday, January 7, New Hope United Methodist Church in Brandon will begin offering two weekly Celebrate Recovery classes. The 12 step program helps people gain freedom from their addiction through Jesus Christ so they can live emotionally and spiritually healthy lives. The free classes will take place on New Hope’s campus at 7 p.m. The Celebrate Recovery class is for adults but will also offer a version for middle and high school students called The Landing. Since 1991, Celebrate Recovery, a Christ-centered recovery ministry, has helped more than five million people complete a recovery program. Today, it’s found in more than 35,000 churches. The Landing is an ongoing 52-week program

for teenagers who are struggling to live their lives in a healthy way. Chris Temple is the youth director at New Hope and ministry leader for The Landing. He has personal experience with the Celebrate Recovery program. “A year and a half ago, I began my journey in recovery,” explained Temple. “I found Celebrate Recovery to be both beneficial spiritually and of great guidance in the 12 steps.” Temple continued, “The one thing that lacks in all other 12 step programs is not the spiritual aspect of a higher power or even God, but that it is Christ-based. I spent close to three months in rehab at the beginning of my journey and thought that I was going into a Christ-based situation, and that was not the case.” Karen Stevenson is New Hope’s ministry pastor over the two programs and began Celebrate Recovery as a participant in 2010. “I know that God never wastes a hurt,” Stevenson said, “Celebrate Recovery has been instrumental in my healing. It helped me see I wasn’t alone in my hurt and pain, I developed accountability and lasting friendships and God continues to restore my brokenness to peace and joy.” New Hope’s campus is located at 213 N. Knights Ave. in Brandon, visit www.findnewhope.com and www.celebraterecovery.com. For questions, email celebraterecovery@findnewhope.com or t helanding@findnewhope.com.

Walker Brothers Return To Brandon For Annual Bluegrass Gig

By Amanda Boston

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Hagia Sophia Cathedral

The Hagia Sophia Cathedral is an enormous architectural centerpiece in Istanbul, Turkey. It was initially built as a Christian basilica more than 1,500 years ago. Similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the Parthenon in Athens, the Hagia Sophia is an iconic symbol in Istanbul. Its role in the history of Istanbul is also significant because of the long history in the region relating to religion, art and architecture. Hagia Sophia is a former Orthodox basilica and is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. There is a long and complex history associated with the cathedral, but it is most recognized for the size of the building itself and the complex structure of the large interior. The nave is covered by a central dome 182 feet from floor level, supported by 40 arched windows. The mosaic on the main dome is believed to be an image of Christ and is covered by gold calligraphy. The cathedral is widely known for its enormous size, and particularly so because the walls holding up the large dome are mostly made of mortar instead of masonry. In fact, this was the largest cathedral in the world until the Seville Cathedral was built some 1,000 years later. The Hagia Sophia was originally built

as a basilica for the Greek Orthodox Christian Church. However, its function has changed several times in the centuries since. Byzantine Emperor Constantius commissioned the construction of the first Hagia Sophia in 360 A.D. Greek Orthodox was the official religion of the Byzantines, and the Hagia Sophia was considered the central church of the faith. The cathedral became the place where new emperors were crowned and served as an important role in Byzantine culture and politics for much of its first 900 years of existence. However, during the Crusades, the city of Constantinople, including the Hagia Sophia, was under Roman control for a brief period in the 13th century. The Hagia Sophia was severely damaged during this time, but it was repaired when the Byzantines once again took control. With time, the cathedral has encountered many repairs and changes. During a restoration from 2004-2018, a team of archaeologists worked at the site and were surprised at their many discoveries. Since 1935, the legendary structure has been operated as a museum by the national government and attracts more than three million visitors annually. For more information, visit www.hagiasophia.com.

Brandon Meals On Wheels Brings Joy To Those In Need During Holidays Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels is a Brandon-based nonprofit and it has been a part of the Brandon community for 42 years. “The Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels, Inc. began in 1976 in an effort to make sure that Brandon community residents who were unable to leave their homes could be provided a noon meal,” said Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels President Guy Fultral. “Residents who need meals delivered are screened to ensure that they do not drive nor have access to transportation in order to shop for food. No one is denied if they meet the screening criteria.” Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels started through the cooperative efforts of Limona Village Chapel and St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church. “We currently have 17 churches that support our efforts,” said Vice President Elena LaRussa. “They are Westminster Presbyterian, First United Methodist Church of Seffner, Kings Avenue Baptist, Bell Shoals Baptist, Apostles Lutheran Church, High Point Church, St. Andrews, Nativity, First Presbyterian, Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church of Seffner, First Baptist Church of Brandon, St. Stephen Catholic Church, Brandon Christian Church, Rich Valley Church, New Hope Methodist Church and First Baptist of Dover.” These churches donate kitchen facilities for food prepa-

ration and volunteers to help prepare and assemble the meals. This program is truly a mission of many hearts and many hands that contribute to its success for the benefit of those in need in the Brandon community. Donations and volunteers from the community are what keeps Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels alive. “Donations from the community as this is one of our main funding sources,” LaRussa said. “Our clients also donate $2.50 per meal or pay what they can afford. No one is refused a meal if they cannot pay.” No government funding is received by Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels. Greater Brandon Meals on Wheels is currently accepting donations of ham, turkey, canned goods and monetary donations. “Our hope is that with the help of the community, we can continue serving the Brandon area for many more years as the need is here,” LaRussa said. “It’s very rewarding to get involved. We would also like to serve the FishHawk and Lithia areas. Hopefully we can get interests from more churches to sign up from this area in the future.” For more information or to donate, visit www.brandonmealsonwheels.com.
