By Kelly Wise Valdes

The first-ever combined event, SouthShore Seafood & Arts Festival, will be debuting Saturday-Sunday, November 23 at E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin.

musical entertainment. There will be more than 150 vendors in this new combined festival. “We are excited to bring the community an even bigger and better festival,” said Rimes. “It's a lot of work planning these events (seven-nine months each) and this will allow us to plan our one huge event and then go back to focusing on the day-today chamber business.” There will be so much to do and see and eat, of course, and the waterfront atmosphere is an added bonus to this venue. There is a $2 entry fee per carload to E.G. Simmons Park. This fee is not per person—it is per carload and goes directly to Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation. Admission to the festival is $5 per adult and children under 12 years old are free. Active military are free with military ID. Do not miss out on being part of this very first-ever combined event. The SouthShore Seafood & Arts Festival will be held at E.G. Simmons Park, located at 2401 19th Ave. NW in Ruskin, on Saturday, November 2 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, November 3 from 10.am. to 5 p.m. For information, visit www.ruskinseafoodfestival.org, email admin@southshorechamberofcommerce.org or call 645-1366.

ARISE Church At Brandon Expands Into SouthShore Community With New Location

By Amanda Boston

ARISE Church launches a new church campus in SouthShore.

With roots dating back to 1959, ARISE Church has been a staple in the community. In the last decade, ARISE has seen prolific growth, culminating in a new facility in 2017. Its Sunday mornings draw upwards of 1,000 people, with many of its attendees driving from Riverview and the SouthShore area. To better serve the needs of the congregation, ARISE leadership is transitioning to a multi-site church model. ARISE Church at SouthShore will be led by Campus Pastor Mike Braddock and will officially launch on Sunday, September 8. Pastor Braddock and his launch team of 85 people are expecting around 250-300 people at its kickoff and hope to increase to 500 people by the close of the year. Pastor Braddock explained that ARISE is one church with multiple locations and said, "We will not be a tele-streaming location. We are going to have live preaching and worship. We will have one 90-minute service at 10 a.m., and it will be a live experience from the minute we start until we end." ARISE Church at SouthShore will also implement a rotational preaching model. Pastor Braddock will preach the majority of the time, but like at the Brandon campus, it will rotate members from ARISE's preaching team. Pastor Braddock will serve as the campus pastor, responsible for

caring for the needs of the SouthShore congregation. His wife, Kristina, will operate as the campus director. The SouthShore campus will replicate much of the Brandon campus to include active children and youth programs. The youth group gatherings and a midweek service will be held on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. Regarding the children and youth programs, Braddock said, "One of our core values is that we value the next generation. We are extremely adamant about making sure we are not just babysitting kids, but that we are discipling kids." In August, ARISE launched ARISE Academy, a Christian daycare center in Brandon serving children from age 6 weeks through VPK. The new center is located at 401 Pauls Dr. in Brandon. To register or learn more, contact Academy Director Nicholette Johnson at nicholette@arisebrandon.com or call 689-2345. For more information about ARISE and its many ministries, visit www.arisebrandon.com. For specific details on the SouthShore campus, search @arisesouthshore on Facebook. FINANCIAL FOCUS

Adam M. benAbram Financial Advisor

When Should You See a Financial Professional?

It can be challenging to achieve your financial objectives. Fortunately, you don’t have to go it alone – but when should you seek help? Here are some of the key life events in which you might be able to benefit from the services of a financial professional: First professional job – Eventually, you will land that first job, which will offer benefits and a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. Since you may not have any experience with a 401(k), you may have several questions: How much should I contribute? What sorts of investments should I choose? When should I change my investment selections? A financial professional can help you review your plan and explain the aspects that may affect your investment choices. Marriage – When you get married, you and your spouse may decide to merge your finances, including your investments. But if each of you brings similar investments to the table, you might create some redundancies. A financial professional can look at your respective portfolios and recommend ways to diversify. Generally, the more diversified you are, the greater your protection against market downturns that primarily hit one type of asset class. (However, while diversification can help reduce the impact of market volatility, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) Children – Once you have children, you’ll have new responsibilities – and you’ll have some new financial issues that should be addressed. If something happened to you, could your children still have the same lifestyle and educational opportunities? Would they even be able to stay in the same home? To help ensure your children’s security, you may need to add more life and disability insurance.

While life insurance could help pay for your children’s education, you also should prepare for education costs as if you will be around. So you may want to consider an education savings investment such as a 529 plan. A financial professional can help you with your insurance and education-funding needs. Retirement – Once you retire, you will face a variety of financial decisions, but here’s one of the most important ones: How much money should you withdraw each year from your retirement accounts? To choose an annual withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your needs, you should consider several factors: how much you have in your retirement accounts, how much Social Security you’ll receive, what other sources of income (such as part-time work or consulting) you might have, your age at retirement, your spouse’s projected retirement assets, your retirement lifestyle, and so on. It might not be easy for you to consider all these elements and then arrive at a suitable withdrawal rate, but a financial professional has the experience, training and technology to help determine a figure that could work for you. These aren’t all the life events that may lead you to contact a financial professional, but they should give you a pretty good idea of the type of assistance you could expect over time. So, consider reaching out for the help you need, when you need it. Doing so could help make your life easier as you move toward your financial goals. Historic Ruskin Tomato Plant Replaced By Modern Industry In Apollo Beach

By Charles Nelson

The new Ruskin Vegetable Cooperative finalizing construction in 1942. (May 12, 1942, Tampa Times)

Even the most casual observer knows that Hillsborough County has changed dramatically in recent decades. Gone are many of the farms and ranches that were once the foundation of the county’s economy. In their place are multiple new suburbs, businesses and industries that transformed the south county’s character. One very recent change involves the razing of the Florida Vegetable Corporation’s historic packing plant on US 41 in Apollo Beach. That building was constructed in 1942 after famed Ruskin farmer Paul B. Dickman helped organize the Ruskin Vegetable Cooperative to serve Ruskin farmers. Seventy-two years later, his grandson, Glenn Dickman, president of Plants of Ruskin, partnered with AltMed Enterprises to form a revolutionary, ultramodern business on that same site as one of only a few government-approved facilities dedicated to cultivating and fashioning medical cannabis products for Florida patients. Paul B. Dickman planted his first single acre of tomatoes in 1928 following the collapse of the Florida real estate market.

HART Launches Ride With Respect Campaign To Promote Positive Transit The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) recently launched a new rider awareness campaign, Ride with Respect. The goal of HART's new Ride with Respect campaign is to promote a positive on-board experience for both operators and customers. The campaign targets customers, operators and the community and consists of education of the safety and security rules, riding etiquette, operator customer service training and a social media campaign aimed to elevate the transit operator position to the level of first responders—police, fire rescue, etc. "Every day, more than 300 transit professionals and 34,000 customers share a space on HART buses, vans and streetcars," said Benjamin Limmer, HART CEO. "We hope launching the Ride with Respect campaign helps maintain a safe, respectful and courteous environment on board our vehicles." Central to the Ride with Respect campaign is a series of emotional short vignettes following HART operators throughout their day, displaying family interactions, hobbies, devotions, etc. to help customers and the general public better connect with HART staff.

Staff Report

The first in the Ride with Respect video series is Latisha Jones, a HARTPlus van operator who has driven for HART for seven years. You can search her name on youtube.com to see her video. "Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1593 is glad to see this community-based campaign, especially featuring ATU Local 1593 Union members/HART professional operators," said Curtis Howard, ATU International Vice President. "The ATU will continue to partner with HART, Hillsborough County and the rest of the communities we serve. As we do our best to move the residents of Hillsborough County in a safely and timely manner, we need them to treat our operators with respect each and every day.” ATU Local 1593 thanks the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office for assisting HART operators with de-escalation training and would especially like to thank every HART operator for their dedication, commitment and professionalism as they execute 34,000 daily trips for Hillsborough County. For more information on the Ride with Respect campaign, visit www.goHART.org/RideWithRespect.

Competitors Sought For Hillsborough’s Active Life Games

Exercise is great for the body and mind, but it is particularly important as we age. The Active Life Games, organized by Hillsborough County Parks & Recreation, help promote physical and mental fitness through an Olympic-style competition that attracts hundreds of adults age 50 and older each year. The 39th annual competition continues the tradition of offering a variety of contests for all skill and fitness levels. Events range from track and field to cycling to pickleball to billiards, dominoes and horseshoes. Some of the more than two dozen events are qualifiers for state competitions. Registration costs $15 for one event and $25 for unlimited events. There is an additional $25 charge for those participating in the golf competition, which includes a cart. This year’s games will be held from MondayFriday, October 7-18. In addition to being a lot of fun and a great way to stay in shape, the games serve as a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games. in journalism and environmental studies. After her journalism teacher told her about this opportunity, Le Roy wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer because writing has been her passion since she was little. She loves the Osprey Observer because of its focus on the local community and how it brings everyone together. In her time here, she has learned not just about the writing process, but also about the marketing and business side of the newspaper industry. She said she now knows there are a ton of factors that people do not think about when a newspaper is delivered to their door. Le Roy’s favorite part about working for the paper has been interviewing people and hearing first-hand the stories of people in the community. She would like to say to the staff, “Thank you to the entire staff for being so nice and helpful!”

Kalman is a sophomore at the University of Florida currently majoring in journalism. She chose this field of study after working on her high school newspaper for two years and then writing for The Alligator, one of the country’s largest student-run newspapers, in college. She loves journalism because it allows her to channel her passion for writing into something positive for the community. Her favorite part about working at the Osprey Observer this summer was collaborating with such a wonderful team and getting the chance to be more involved in the community she grew up in. During her time on staff, she continued to improve her writing and interviewing skills. Kalman would like to say to the staff, “Thank you for making this whole experience so enjoyable. Shout out to Michelle for being awesome and always being there to give me advice and offer to help.”

attend in the future, but he is considering UCF or Old Dominion. Crumpacker said he will most likely major in programming because he makes video games and codes as a hobby but is also considering journalism as a possibility. Crumpacker wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer because he loved the writing and journalism classes he has taken in school, so this was a great way to continue working on his skills over the summer. During his time at the Osprey Observer, Sean has learned about the news writing process, how to conduct interviews and has further improved his communication skills. He also recently moved to FishHawk, so writing for the paper has been a great way to learn about and get involved in the community. Crumpacker wanted to say to the staff, “Thanks to everyone at the office for being so helpful, friendly and responsive. This internship was a great opportunity, both for my own hobby and job experience, and I’m really grateful that I got to get involved with the Osprey Observer.” ECRWSS EDDM

Jasmine Haroun Newsome High School

Haroun is a rising sophomore at Newsome High School and hopes to one day go to her dream school, University of Florida, to study biological sciences. She wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer because she has always valued the newspaper since it shows us the good going on around us, and people need to see the positives once in a while. Also, this gave Haroun the opportunity to enhance her writing skills.

Nur Suleiman Florida A & M University

Suleiman is a rising second year student studying journalism at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. She chose Florida A&M because she wanted a change of pace and felt the university chose her. She wanted to intern at the Osprey Observer to advance her writing skills while she was home for the summer at a publication she loved to read in high school. After spending a couple months working here, Suleiman has learned a lot about the ins and out of newspaper writing. Although she was a member of the Newsome yearbook staff, she had never considered news before, so this opportunity has allowed her to explore this field. Her favorite part about working here is being able to watch a topic transform into a story and to see her work published. Suleiman would like to say, “I would just like to thank the staff for this opportunity and tell them that they truly are amazing people.”

Riverview Sharks Riverview: The Sharks are off to a great start this season, defeating Blake 37-26 in front of the Riverview home crowd in their opener. They are led by third-year Head Coach William Mosel. The spread offense that they run will ride on the arm and legs of star sophomore dual-threat quarterback Stazion Gage. Gage had a tremendous game against Blake on August 23. He completed nine of 18 pass attempts for 136 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran the ball 22 times for 155 yards and three touchdowns, giving him an astounding five total touchdowns and 291 all-purpose yards. Gage watched last season and learned, and he spent the offseason getting familiar with the offense. Coach Mosel says that Gage is very cerebral and has a natural ability to make plays. Look for him to have a breakout season if he can stay healthy with all the hits that he takes from running the ball. Other key players include junior safety/receiver Isiah Dolby,

receiver Colby Thornton, junior receiver/safety Kadeem Robinson, safety/cornerback Devin White, junior defensive end/tight end James Moore, senior Jacob Poirot, Colin Hussey, sophomore receiver Yonlys Pena, junior receiver Jaden Ramos, receiver Ricky Lundstrom and senior slotback/defensive end Jordan Schell. Mosel said that a lot of different players contributed in the 'team victory' and he thinks that his team’s strength this season is their chemistry. The Sharks are poised for a bounce-back season after a tough 2018 campaign. They will improve on last season’s 3-7 record as they have a very winnable schedule, only having to face one playoff team from last season, but they will have to be better at closing out games. Coach Mosel wants his team to take it one game at a time and just think about executing plays.

Riverview Sharks Schedule: 8/23 vs Blake 8/30 @ Durant 9/6 vs Brandon 9/13 @ Haines City 9/20 @ Strawberry Crest 9/27 @ Newsome 10/4 vs Leto 10/11 @ Riverview Sarasota 10/18 @ Ridge Community 10/25 vs Lennard

East Bay Indians East Bay: The Indians are coming off of a very good 7-4 2018 season. Ninth-year Head Coach Frank LaRosa has brought stability to the program. Senior Jahkese Cruz will start at quarterback for East Bay in the 2019 campaign. The strong-armed quarterback will be tested this season, as East Bay has one of the more challenging schedules in the county, matching up against several teams that made the playoffs last season. LaRosa thinks highly of Cruz’s leadership, saying that he is very unselfish, dedicated to improving his craft and is a team player. The Indians are a multiple spread to run team that has several key players on both sides of the ball, including senior linebacker/guard Jaden Santos Lopez, senior cornerback/receiver Logan Webb, senior running

back/safety/linebacker Kenlin Jones, senior Keyaun Kinney, junior long snapper/defensive end/tackle Garrett Hines and senior receiver/tight end Johnathan HalaufiaMartinez. LaRosa thinks that his team’s strength is their chemistry and unity. The Indians will have to overcome their lack of experience, as they return with only three starters on offense and three on defense. The program took a huge step forward in 2018, winning four games in a row to end the season on a high note. The Indians look to continue the momentum in 2019. “We approach every opponent the same,” said LaRosa. “Our focus is to improve ourselves so that we can give the best effort controlling what we do.”

East Bay Indians Schedule: 8/23 @ Lennard 8/30 @ Chamberlain 9/6 vs Jefferson 9/13 @ Gaither 9/20 vs Plant City 9/27 @ Tampa Bay Tech 10/4 vs Sickles 10/11 vs Wiregrass Ranch 10/25 @ Armwood 11/1 vs Bloomingdale

Lennard Longhorns Lennard: The Longhorns are led by fourth-year Head Coach Matt Kitchie, who is looking to build up the football program. Sophomore Gavin Henley will take snaps at center for Lennard this season. Coach Kitchie likes Henley’s command of the offense. They aren’t going to put too much pressure on the young quarterback, primarily running the ball behind a very big and talented offensive line and setting him up with plays to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. This spread offense likes to control the ball while heavily utilizing the running game. Last season they had the #5 leading rusher in the state of Florida in running back Tino Hunt, who had 1,607 yards and 16 touchdowns with an outstanding 7 yards per carry average. Hunt averaged 160 yards per game in 2018, and the offense will run through the senior this season as well, giving him the bulk of the carries.

Other key players include junior running back Quay Smith, junior receiver Dax Corr, sophomore running back/receiver Jahki Davis, junior defensive lineman Jhalin Hobbs, senior linebacker Davian Papius, senior strong safety/cornerback Josh Culpepper and senior cornerback Xavier Mitchell. The Longhorn’s most talented player might be Michael Rankins. The 6 ft. 5 in., 285pound senior right guard is committed to play college football for Georgia Tech. Coach Kitchie would like to see improvement in his defense this season. The team’s primary goal is to improve each day. Lennard opened up against top rival East Bay and won 140. Coming into the game, East Bay had a 13-1 overall record against Lennard, so the Longhorns were very motivated for this game, and they would love to turn that series around in the coming seasons.
