First Women Graduate From New Program Offering Construction Training

Staff Report

Eighteen women celebrated the completion of Women Building Futures on October 17. Women Building Futures is a unique program designed to help women explore higher paying career options in the growing construction field.

Women Building Futures is a 15week program that contains more than 80 hours of classes to learn carpentry, drywall, painting, block masonry/finishing, flooring and construction administration. Graduates who successfully complete all requirements will earn certifications from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and OSHA 10. Ann W. Madsen, executive director of The Centre for Women, said she is especially grateful to Enterprising Latinas and HCC SouthShore for the incredible effort they put into making this class a success. “This has been a very successful partnership. We are working together to empower women with skills needed to achieve success and meet the demand for construction workers,” Madsen said. The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women is a nonprofit organization offering a diverse array of programs to help women in the Tampa Bay region. New Center Exhibit Brings History’s Building Blocks To Life In LEGO® Bricks

By Manny Leto

In the U.S. for the first time, ‘Brick History’ lets visitors journey through pivotal moments in world history modeled in LEGO® bricks. Featuring key figures from Mozart to Martin Luther King, scientific discoveries from the Big Bang to DNA and recent history from mobile phones to the moon landings, history comes to life in LEGO® bricks during ‘Brick History,’ a new exhibit at the Tampa Bay History Center opening on Saturday, October 19. The exhibit features 28 meticulously crafted models, each depicting a person, moment or discovery that altered world history. ‘The Arts’ explores creativity from cave paintings to pop art, ‘Conflict’ moves from natural disasters like Pompeii to political disputes such as the Boston Tea Party, ‘Equality’ brings to life the Civil Rights movement, ‘Exploration’ depicts discoveries and inventions that have changed our world, while ‘Transport’ moves from railways and seafaring to

flight. LEGO® artist Warren Elsmore and his team have created a celebration of our shared stories, struggles and triumphs, made from everyone’s favorite Danish toy. There will be tables set up inside the exhibit area where both kids and adults can build their own LEGO® brick creations. Kids can try their hand at building iconic Florida models, including a palm tree, an alligator, a sailboat and more. ‘Brick History’ will also feature some bay area flare, with LEGO® brick portraits of pirates, local sports logos and a map of Florida by Tampa artist John Fontana from Bricks 4 Kidz. The exhibit is on view at the History Center through Sunday, February 16, 2020. Some upcoming events include: Tuesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. – Sangria and Stories: Brick History; Saturday, November 16 at 10 a.m. – Bricks 4 Kidz (ages 5-14); and Saturday, November 16 at 7 p.m. – LEGO® Brick Retro Game Night (hosted by the History Center Teen Council). The Tampa Bay History Center is located at 801 Old Water St. in Tampa. Tickets start at $10.95 for children age 7 and up, and they are free for children age 6 and under. More information is at TampaBayHistoryCenter.org, or call 2280097.

East Bay Chorus & Orchestra To Perform Annual Masterworks Concert On Tuesday, November 19, two choirs from East Bay High School will combine with one from Riverview High School to perform in the Seventh Annual Masterworks Concert presented by American Guardian Title & Escrow. The concert will feature two choral masterworks accompanied by string orchestra, orchestral chamber and organ music. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church, located at 106 11th Ave. NE. in Ruskin. East Bay Choral Director Brian NeSmith began the concert series with the idea of giving his Advanced Women’s Chorus students the rare opportunity to perform with a live professional orchestra and professional soloists. He also wanted to create more classical music offerings for the SouthShore area. In 2015, the concert moved from East Bay High School to St. Anne Catholic Church, which has graciously hosted it ever since. In 2018, American Guardian Title & Escrow became the first-ever presenting sponsor of the concert. The Riverview High School Advanced Women’s Chorus joins East Bay for the second time this year. In addition, East Bay’s Sounds of Time will perform in the concert for the first time, per-

forming a shorter work. “Giving our students the chance to collaborate with other community schools in a beautiful setting like St. Anne Catholic Church is important to me, and this concert brings wonderful classical music to the SouthShore area,” NeSmith said. The program will include Händel’s Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 1, performed by the Masterworks Orchestra; an organ work performed by Dr. Ryan Hebert of the University of Tampa; Nicola Porpora’s Kyrie, performed by East Bay High School’s Sounds of Time; and Francesco Brusa’s Missa pro defunctis, performed by the combined Advanced Women’s Choirs of East Bay High School and Riverview High School. The East Bay High School Choral Department offers six choirs for students of all levels of vocal and musical development in styles ranging from contemporary a cappella to classical music and everything in between. Five Decades Have Been Filled With Festival Fun At Nativity Novemberfest, Nov 21-24 Nativity Catholic’s Novemberfest will celebrate five decades of festival fun when it returns from Thursday, November 21 to Sunday, November 24. Following the Florida State Fair and Strawberry Festival, Novemberfest is the third largest annual carnival in Hillsborough County. More than just a time-honored tradition, Novemberfest is Nativity’s largest fundraiser supporting its school and faith formation program. The family-fun attracts about 100,000 people each year and is put on by its parish volunteers. Sherry Stewart, a longtime parishioner of Nativity, has been helping with Novemberfest for 40 years. Stewart volunteers as the food chairman managing the 15 different vendors in the Sharon Evans, Susan Davis and Sherry Stewart food tent. selling advanced armbands for students outside of church garage in 1989. The cash prizes are in the amounts of $2,500, $1,000, $750, $500 and $250 with the grand prize of $5,000 announced on Sunday. Stewart also shared that Shells, a local seafood restaurant, is joining this year’s food tent. From traditional hamburgers to scratch-made Polish cooking, each year, fest-goers look forward to the variety and quality of the different food booths. “I have 15 different food booths. Over the years, you build relationships, and that’s why I continue to volunteer each year. What better place can you help build your church than with your community?” said Stewart. Alexis Redig, Nativity’s faith and media coordinator, said, "It never ceases to amaze me how much love for Novemberfest our surrounding community has.” Redig continued, “Seeing the greater impact this family-friendly and fun event has on the community is awesome and drives our staff and volunteers to continue to improve the Novemberfest experience year after year.” More details on the entertainment and the fest schedule can be found at www.nativitycatholicchurch.org/novemberfest. CPR Training Now Readily Available Due To Vital Life Savers

By Franka Potter

CPR demonstration with training mannequins in three sizes, infant, child and adult.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training became more readily available to Brandon and neighboring residents when Vital Life Savers opened its doors in March 2019. Co-owner Deborah Awolowo saw a need within the community for CPR training and as a medical provider decided to help meet that need. Awolowo mentioned that, as part of her medical license requirements, CPR training is mandatory; however, when she was a CPR student, she felt the course was rushed and students were not required to perform hands-on compression on manikins. She stated, “I believe that everyone who takes a CPR course should actually perform compressions on manikins so they can understand how challenging it could be.” The mission of Vital Life Savers is to educate the community on the importance of performing CPR correctly and safely. It certifies individuals within various

industries such as healthcare, food service, childcare and education. It utilizes manikins with feedback devices to ensure that students give high-quality chest compressions with real-time feedback on depth and rate. Awolowo also stated that, “Vital Life Savers makes learning CPR easy and fun. Our courses are taught by people in the medical field. We especially encourage new parents, grandparents and babysitters to learn how to perform CPR on infants. CPR is performed differently on infants than on a child or an adult. We offer classes six days a week.” Vital Life Savers is staffed with a team of eight who are all certified with the American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC) and American Health & Safety Institute (ASHI). They also provide certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Life Support (PALS). Students who complete the CPR course with Vital Life Savers will also be certified with AHA, ARC and ASHI. Classes are kept small to ensure students receive the one-on-one attention needed and to provide a comfortable and nonintimidating learning environment. Visit Vital Life Savers at 644 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon or go to www.vital-heart.com. You can also give it a call at 333-0666 to make an appointment. Hours of operation are Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Dove Interior Owners Participate In Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers 5K

Each year, Carpet One participates in the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K in New York City, supporting and bringing awareness to this cause. The race retraces the steps of Stephen Siller, a FDNY fireman who was off the day the call came in on 9/11. Stephen put on his 60 pounds of gear and ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he and his entire battalion perished that day. This foundation builds SmartHomes for our catastrophically wounded veterans, first responders, and their families. Joan and Kim, mother and daughter owners of Dove Interiors, joined the race in New York City on September 29. Dove Interiors Carpet One will be participating in the local Clearwater 5K on November 2nd, as well. Anyone wanting to participate should go to 2019 Tunnel to Towers Clearwater to register. Florida Dermatology And Skin Cancer Centers Opens New Office In Apollo Beach

Florida Dermatology and Skin Cancer Centers (FLDSCC), a familyfocused practice with offices throughout Florida, has expanded and is now open in Apollo Beach. Located in the Kings Lake plaza, the new office is easily accessible to current

and future patients in surrounding communities. FLDSCC’s team of providers treats all types of skin and scalp conditions and is committed to providing exceptional patient care and service. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70. Skin cancer, such as melanoma, can appear at any time in a person’s life, and the risk increases as you age. Florida ranks second in the nation for the highest rate of new melanoma cases. The good news is that if it’s detected early, it’s almost always treatable. “We are thrilled to bring Florida Dermatology and Skin Cancer Centers to the growing area of Apollo Beach,” said Medical Director of FLDSCC Dr. K. Wade Foster. “The fact that more people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined, means we as an organization have a duty to educate and treat as many people as possible to give them the best chance for favorable outcomes.” He and his team use proven, innovative methods to remove cancers, preserve healthy skin and restore natural appearance. Dr. Foster received his M.D. and

Ph.D. from the University of Alabama Birmingham. He completed both his internship and residency at UAB and his procedural dermatology fellowship at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and the West Los Angeles V.A. Medical Center under Dr. Ron Moy. He has been a medical director of Florida Dermatology and Skin Cancer Centers since July 2008. Dr. Foster is fellowship-trained in Mohs surgery, the most effective technique for most types of skin cancers with minimal scarring or risk. Call 855-353-7546, or email info@FLDSCC.com.

Hillsborough School Board Names New High School - Sumner High School

After receiving more than 1,600 school name recommendations, the Hillsborough County School Board voted to name our district’s new high school Jule F. Sumner High School. Sumner High School is scheduled to open in fall 2020 in the fast-growing area of Southeastern Hillsborough County. It will be the first new high school to open in more than 10 years in our district. Jule Sumner was an early pioneer in Hillsborough County. He was born in 1884 in Kissimmee and his family moved to Hillsborough County in 1907. Ten years later, Jule Sumner bought 240 acres to start his own cattle ranch near Boyette Rd. Jule (pronounced like ‘jewel’) Sumner and his family have been longtime contributors to Hillsborough County and their legacy is a vital part of our community’s history. Last month, Dave Brown was named the principal of the new high school. Principal Brown and other district leaders held community meetings to gather name recommendations. Suggestions also came in to our district by email.

New High School Offers Unique Middle School Program For 5th Grade Students

By Kate Quesada

Hillsborough County recently announced plans to offer a unique middle school experience for a group of current fifth grade students. When it opens in August 2020, the newly named Jule F. Sumner High School, previously known as High School TTT, in Riverview will also be home to Academy 2027, a first-of-its-kind middle school program. According to Sumner High School Principal Dave Brown, Academy 2027 is a program only for students who will be in sixth grade for the 2020-21 school year. The students will move together through sixth, seventh and eighth grades in the academy and will then be able to stay at the same school for high school. “This is a unique concept and something we are excited to develop,” said Brown, whose own daughter will be participating in the program. “Students and teachers will become a tight-knit group moving through the program together, something that research shows is very effective for learning.” Students can apply to attend Academy 2027, which was named because its members will graduate from high school in 2027, through Hillsborough County School District’s School Choice program. There are no specific academic or testing requirements for students to enter the program, and students within

the Sumner High School boundaries—who live more than two miles from the school— will receive free transportation. “The school will be applying for certification through the internationally respected Cambridge Pathway to become a Cambridge pre-AICE school,” said Hillsborough County Public School’s Media Outreach Tanya Arja, who explained that AICE stands for Advanced International Certification in Education. “The AICE curriculum is written and administered by the University of Cambridge in Cambridge, England.” Students in the middle school will be largely separated from the Sumner High School students, although they may be taught by the high school teachers for elective classes and will have access to the new high school’s facilities, including the auditorium and athletic facilities. Depending on how many families express an interest in choosing the school, Brown expects the class to house anywhere from 300 to 450 students. The School Choice application window is currently open, and families have until December 31 to apply to Academy 2027. For more information, visit www.sdhc.k12.fl.us. Sumner High is located at 10650 C.R. 672 in Riverview, email Brown at David.Brown@sdhc.k12.fl.us.

The Danger Of Feeding Your Pets Treats During The Holidays

• Computer Setup • Software Installation • Computer Repairs • Virus Scans & Removal • Malware Removal • Networking

By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH

Nothing is quite as inviting as the aroma of a turkey basting in the oven and all the fixings that go with it. As homes begin to transform with holiday spirit, families and friends gather for visits and celebrations. Our pets also share in the joy of the holiday season with us. They always seem to look their cutest while begging for, and sometimes receiving, a taste of our celebrations. It is important to remember that allowing our pets to join us in our holiday feasts can sometimes lead to upset stomachs, cause diarrhea and even result in an unexpected visit to the emergency clinic or veterinarian's office. You may find it difficult at times to ignore a cat's constant meowing or a dog's imploring looks, but be sure not to overindulge their appetites. As boring as it sounds to us, pets thrive on a stable diet of the same food. For every junkyard dog with a cast-iron gut, there are 30 other pets that cannot handle a sudden change in the consistency of their diet. A well-balanced pet food with the proper ratio of protein, carbohydrates and fats gives a pet a healthy, well-regulated digestive system. Although some pets are able to enjoy a piece of the white meat from a turkey and a small helping of vegetables (without gravy or butter), others will

end up with cramps and distress from even the smallest amount of something different than their usual food. If you feel you must share your holiday dinner with your four-legged family members, remember that pets should only be given a very small amount of lean meat (i.e., low-fat chicken or turkey), vegetables and fruits. Foods to avoid include sauces, gravies, butter, sugars, dairy products or anything high in oils or fats. Do not let your pet chew on turkey bones. They can become lodged in the mouth, or small shards may get stuck in or even perforate the esophagus, stomach or intestinal tract. These brittle bones can cause so much damage internally that the outcome may be catastrophic or even fatal. Veterinarians generally tell clients not to give their pets any "people food" at all in order to avoid potential gastrointestinal pain for pets and expensive veterinary care bills for their pet owner. However, since it is human nature to include all family members, as well as our pets, in our holiday celebrations, remember these two simple rules: only feed your pets healthy choices, and only very small amounts. Our pets are much smaller than we are and do not need larger portions of any kind of food, even for those that are healthy. Remember that moderation is the key to a successful celebration.

The sport of axe throwing as a sport isn’t new; in fact, it could be one of the oldest sports in existence. However, throwing axes as a sport or pastime is just rolling onto the scene in the United States. The growing sport of axe throwing recently gained in popularity in Canada and has gained quite a following in America within the last two years. Bury The Hatchet is a New Jerseybased company that has 16 locations nationwide, with its newest location in Brandon. Participants are briefed on safety rules and given demonstrations before anyone throws an axe. Closed toe shoes are mandatory for all participants. The cost for a two-hour session is $39.99 per person. This includes an axe master in your lane to show you how to throw, organize various games and make sure everyone is safe and having a good time. If you had a bad day at work, or you had a bad day with traffic, or you were having a bad time at home or whatever, when you went in there and worked out for an hour or two, you forgot about all that and he kept your mind off of it and he would talk to people as a father. It was all about his family, his judo family and his regular family.” The Florida School of Judo is a nonprofit organization that volunteers at the YMCA. Any profit that is made goes towards equipment and sponsorships. There are currently 40-60 kids that are a part of the school and 30-40 adults on the weekend at the Campo YMCA. Surprise Loved One With A Special Gift From McAuley Fine Jewelry

By Michelle Colesanti

This holiday season, whether you are planning to surprise your significant other with an engagement ring or just would like a custom piece of jewelry to give as a gift to your special someone, McAuley Fine Jewelry is a gem in the community and owner Ed McAuley, who has been in the business for many years, and the outstanding staff, many of which have been in the jewelry business for decades, will help you find the perfect piece that will enchant the bearer of your gift. McAuley spent a decade as assistant manager at Martin Jewelers prior to opening McAuley’s Fine Jewelry. When Martins Jewelers closed, he took over becoming the owner and changing the name, but he kept all of the skilled staff. His journey to the jewelry trade wound through other professions. “I’ve sold things from insurance to appliances, but was miserable because these were things customers had to buy,” said McAuley. McAuley’s is a one-stop-shop for all of your jewelry wants and needs. Custom

designs are a specialty at McAuley’s, but previously loved (consignment) jewelry is also sold. Watch and jewelry repairs are done on-site by experienced staff members. McAuley’s will also purchase gold from you. Find it on Facebook at McAuley Fine Jewelry and enter its random drawing each month for a chance to win a featured piece of jewelry. Gladys Zenquis recommended McAuley Fine Jewelry on Facebook. “We only have them take care of our jewelry. Not only the great customer service and communication, but also how they treat every piece of jewelry like if it was their own. If you’re going to be needing something fixed or even cleaned.... this is the place to come,” she commented. Hours are Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Visit McAuley Fine Jewelry at 664 Oakfield Dr. in Brandon. You can reach them at 689-8124.
