Few places allow visitors to experience Florida’s natural beauty like Ruskin’s hidden gem, Camp Bayou. Located on 160 acres of untouched habitat from wetlands to pine flatwoods, it is the perfect place for all ages to make a day trip. Camp Bayou is a small non-profit nature center whose mission is “To sustain a portion of Florida’s original habitats in the Little Manatee River Watershed, and to promote appreciation and better understanding of our natural resources, local history and culture through education.” Visit the Nature Center where you can browse the nature library, discovery tables, and specimens native to our area. Walk the land trails where you can explore a replica of a native village, stay on the lookout for gators and gopher tortoises, go bird watching, meander through the butterfly habitat, or view historic fishing cabins actually used in the area in the 1930s. Visit the Paleo Preserve, a small nonprofit museum, that features fossils, photos, and newspaper articles. Guests can also rent canoes to get up close to nature while they paddle a leisurely hour or so

around the island south of the preserve. As a non-profit, donations and volunteers are sincerely needed and appreciated. Dolly Cummings, manager, calls on the community: “We need volunteers who are passionate about nature willing to cover weekly time slots.” Cummings believes in her small, dedicated crew, but she knows they could do so much more with additional help. Sadly, Camp Bayou experienced some theft recently. Someone broke into one of the cabins and stole four kayaks, two that were donated and two that were bought using a small community grant. If anyone happens to see anyone trying to sell 2 small blue kayaks (6ft), a yellow kayak (8ft), and/or a red/orange kayak (8ft) please notify the local sheriff’s office. Pre-registered groups can receive a “hands-on” dig experience at the Paleo Preserve, a “river dig” at the Peace River, and guided tours through their nature stations. Camp Bayou is open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.. To find more information on adult and youth programs or make a donation, visit online at www.campbayou.org or call 641-8545. Camp Bayou is located at 4140 24th St SE, Ruskin, 33570.

Time To Review Insurance Policies & Find New Relief From Hurricane Deductibles

Come In And Be Inspired At Adelante Now Located In Winthrop’s Airstream Market

It seems like only yesterday that Hurricane Irma roared across Florida, causing billions of dollars in property damages, but the weather anomaly occurred more than seven months ago. One look at a calendar reminds us that the June 1st start date of the 2018 hurricane season will quickly be upon us. This is the perfect time to review insurance policies to understand what is covered, and filling in any gaps. To assist homeowners with this, a Florida Department of Financial Services has published report detailing Florida law as it relates to when the hurricane deductible applies, for what duration and how many can be applied in a calendar year. Hurricane deductibles are typically set at 2%, 5% or 10% of the amount of insurance covering the dwelling at the time of loss. Even though homeowners are only required to pay one hurricane deductible within the calendar year, provided you are insured with the same insurance company or group of companies for the second or subsequent hurricanes during the same calendar year, that amount can drain a savings account. For example, homeowners with a $400,000 policy with a 2% hurricane

deductible are on the hook for the first $8,000 in hurricane damages. Southshore Insurance Professionals president Michelle Mosher offers a solution to those hefty hurricane deductibles. Cat4Home provides deductible reimbursement for losses related to hurricane events. “We work with a lot of first-time homebuyers that may not have thousands of dollars sitting in their savings accounts ready to spend on hurricane deductibles,” she said. Sun City Center resident Larry Brooks is appreciative that Mosher educated him on his insurance options. He added the policy to his homeowners’ insurance. He has lived in Florida off and on since 1970 and said he wanted to make sure he was covered against losses. “The monthly payment is very affordable and for a small annual investment I am able to protect against the $4,000 deductible I would pay if my home was damaged,” he said. Cat4Home also offers a 10% discount for first-responders. Southshore Insurance Professionals is located at 1219 Milleniuim Parkway in Brandon. Visit www.southshoreins.com or call Mosher at 448-7580.

Irrigation, Art In The Library, Support Groups & More... Compiled by Michelle Colesanti, michelle@ospreyobserver.com

Get a Free Irrigation Evaluation From County

Spring is the driest season in Central Florida. Having your irrigation system serviced can save you money and conserve water. In Hillsborough County, a licensed irrigation contractor or plumber is necessary to perform most types of work on your irrigation system. Permits are required for the alteration, replacement or relocation of any standpipe or water supply. If you pull a permit, you will receive a final inspection by the County. Call Development Services at 272-5600 for permit or licensing questions. If you are a high water user and would like to see if you qualify for a free irrigation evaluation, call Paula Staples, Public Education Program Coordinator at 744-5519 Ext. 54142.

The familyfriendly event will feature more than 450 cars and trucks, local craft vendors, live music, raffles, refreshments and child activities. The Bay Life Car Show has become a staple in the community with crowds reaching upward of 3,000 guests. All makes and models of cars are welcomed with more than 10 categories receiving trophies. Although the show car registration is free, Bay Life is requesting that car show participants make a voluntary $10 donation to support missions. “The car show supports our high school student and adult mission trips,” said Steve Schumm, Bay Life’s Mission Director. “This is our largest fundraiser to support missions. This year we are going to Honduras, Africa, New York City and North Georgia.” In addition to the hundreds of cars on display, the event hosts live performances

He continued, “The youth will be out there doing a lot of the work like taking car registration, entertaining children and selling food and raffle tickets. ” Participants may register their vehicles online at the Bay Life website or on the day of the event. Visiting Tallahassee For Family Fun Is A Capital Idea Are you looking to spend your summer vacation close to home? About four hours northwest of the Tampa Bay area is Tallahassee, Florida’s State Capital. Most people think of state politics and Florida State University (FSU) when Tallahassee comes to mind, but there is so much more to the city and surrounding area for the entire family to enjoy. Whether you are a nature lover, thrill seeker or a history buff, you will find something nearby to make this an exciting trip. For history buffs and those that want to learn about Florida’s political history, visit the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. The Historic Capitol has symbolized Florida state government since 1845. Restored to its 1902 appearance, it stands as an icon at the center of Florida’s Capitol complex; the modern-day nerve center of Florida’s government. Visitors experience the people and events that have shaped the state through photos, recordings and audiovisual displays. Together with exhibit panels, photographs, and interactive multimedia, the museum offers a journey through the colorful history of government in Florida. The complex is located at 400 S. Monroe St. Visit www.flhistoriccapitol.gov. If you have piqued your child’s interest in politics, consider a tour of the present day Capitol, which is open to the public on weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday to Friday. For inquiries about tours, call 850-488-6167. Tours are scheduled on a first come, first serve basis. Unlike most museums you will encounter, the Tallahassee Museum offers both indoor and outdoor exhibits on 52 acres of breathtaking Florida flora

and fauna. A landmark for more than 50 years, it is ranked as one of the top state museums. All ages will enjoy the Museum’s living exhibits of native wildlife, nature trails, and native gardens. It is home to 14 historic buildings immersing visitors in 19th-century experiences allowing you to discover the history and lifestyles of southern communities. During weekends, the 1880s Big Bend farm is alive with handson demonstrations of the past. If you need a little more adventure, explore Tallahassee from the tree tops while ziplining. Tallahassee Tree to Tree Adventures allows you to soar through cypress swamps, and conquer aerial games and obstacles on one of the courses at the Tallahassee Museum. Visit https://tallahasseemuseum.org/treetotreeadventures/. The museum is located at 3945 Museum Dr. in Tallahassee. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. Visit https://tallahasseemuseum.org. The Tallahassee Automobile

It also features a knife exhibit, boats, sports memorabilia, dolls, Native American artifacts, Steinway pianos, a general store exhibit and much more. A visit to the National Historic Landmark Mission San Luis transports you back to 1703, where you can escape to another time. Your destination is a community where Apalachee Indians and new-

comers from Spain lived together. Hear the ring of the blacksmith's hammer, smell traditional foods being cooked over an open fire, and walk the plaza where the Apalachees played their

It’s Spring! Remember These Safety Tips Around Alligators All types of animals are becoming active throughout Central Florida. Alligators, in particular, are being seen regularly through the area, and alligators become more aggressive and territorial as mating season begins. GatorWorld Parks of Florida offers these safety tips if you should encounter an alligator on your property or out in the area’s many parks and lakes. Stay back. Keep at least 30 ft. between you and the alligator. If they begin to hiss, you are definitely too close. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Do not swim during this time. Do not assume alligators are slow. Alligators can move very quickly, so it is best to keep a safe distance. Understand typical alligator habitats. Alligators prefer to bask in the sun along the banks of water. Be aware of these types of areas while enjoy our areas vast lake and water system. Fishing near alligators is not recommended. If an alligator moves toward your favorite fishing spot, it is best to relocate for your safety and the safety of the alligator. Remember, fishing line kills wildlife. Also, dispose of your fish scraps in cans at the boat ramps. Do not throw

Staff Report

the scraps back in the water. Pets are typically the size of alligator prey. Keep your pets away from the water’s edge and do not let you pet drink in the water. Never feed an alligator. Avoid piles of twigs, grasses and disturbed soil near the water’s edge. It could be a nest, and female alligators will get aggressive to protect it. “GatorWorld Parks of Florida works closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission as we serve as a rescue and relocation facility for some nuisance alligators. We’ve specifically designed our park to showcase alligators safely,” explained GatorWorld Parks of Florida developer Don Buckner. If you are concerned about an alligator on your property, contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Alligator Nuisance line at 866-FWC-GATOR. For a close encounter with an alligator and to see these beautiful reptiles up close and safely, visit GatorWorld of Florida. It is located at 492 W. Hwy. 44 in Wildwood, a little over an hour’s drive. Visitors are offered opportunities to drive through a scenic trail and view alligators in their natural habitat. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed Sundays. For more information, visit GatorWorldParks.com.

Connection Strong Dogs Wheelchair Basketball Team Finishes 8th In Nation By Nick Nahas The Tampa Bay Strong Dogs are one of the best wheelchair basketball teams in the nation. They are currently ranked 8th in the country, and have been to Louisville, Kentucky for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association championship tournament for nine consecutive years. The Strong Dogs finished 8th in the country this season after their appearance at nationals. They took the eventual champions, the San Diego Wolfpack, down to the wire. They lost by four points to the Wolfpack, but were one of the few teams that were competitive against them. “This team played their hearts out,” said Wayne Bozeman, head coach of the Strong Dogs. “I wouldn’t trade this team… because of the heart they have.” The team, is led by Bozeman, a Recreation Therapist for the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department. Bozeman became the leader of the team 10

years ago after inquiries from some injured veterans at the VA Hospital. They are a part of Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay, a signature program of the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department. The team has a total of 26 players, 15 on the division II team that went to nationals, and 11 on the new division III team. Some of the players have spina bifida, and others are amputees or have spinal cord injuries. A few of the players are injured veterans as well. “To me, they are the best basketball players out there, not just our guys, but everybody,” Bozeman said. “It’s not about their disability, it’s about their ability.” According to Bozeman, the team

will start training for next season in about a month. They practice two hours a day, twice a week at the All People’s Life Center on 6105 E. Sligh Ave., Tampa. They held several car washes to raise money for the expenses to attend the tournament, but the players had to pay out of pocket for some of it. They plan on doing more fundraisers next year.

Bozeman would like to thank Hillsborough County and Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay for all that they do for the team and encourages anybody with a lower extremity injury to come and participate. For more information, you can search for their page, @tbsdofficial on Facebook.
