Riding With Team Grace Cycling To Support MS Research

By Rebecca Weaver

Team Grace

Team Grace Cycling, sponsored in part by Grace Community United Methodist Church in Lithia, is preparing for this year’s Bike MS Citrus Tour on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6. Over two days, Team Grace will be riding with approximately 1,000 other cyclists and volunteers between Fantasy of Flight (Polk City) and the Omni at Champions Gate (Orlando) and then back to Fantasy of Flight. Although cyclists will enjoy riding through the citrus groves of Old Florida, along beautiful lakes, and through ancient forests, the main reason they’re riding is to increase awareness and raise funds to help support cutting-edge research, programs and services for everyone impacted by Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Team Grace is a group of friends, neighbors, and families from all over the central Florida area. They are casual recreational bike riders, cycling enthusiasts, non-riding volunteers, tri-athletes, and even people with MS who use their bikes for fitness, fun, and fundraising. The

total money raised for charities by Team Grace is approximately $75,000, in less than one year. The goal for the Bike MS Citrus Tour is to raise $50,000 in the fight against MS. Team Grace’s Captain is Fishhawk resident, Stephen Barone, who has been riding in Bike MS events for over 15 years. He is proud of the over 35 riders and volunteers who will be participating in this year’s Bike MS Citrus Tour as well as other events throughout the year. “The Citrus Tour is our hallmark event. However, since we formed last winter, Team Grace riders have also participated in the Bike MS Cycle to the shore between Jacksonville and Daytona, Bike MS Breakaway to Key Largo between Miami and Key Largo, the American Diabetes Association Tour de Cure, and Plant City YMCA’s Dean’s Ride. We ride most weekends from Fishhawk and sometimes we travel to ride at the many great cycling locations in the Tampa area. We have a great group who enjoy spending time together.” To sign up to ride or volunteer, or to make a donation, visit main.nationalmssociety.org/goto/TeamGra ce2018. Local Resident And Purple Heart Recipient Celebrates 75th Birthday Gordon Beadle, a resident of Riverview, is celebrating his 75th birthday this month. When he was a young Marine fighting in Vietnam in 1965, there were more than a few occasions he wondered if he might see another birthday as a combat engineer who cleared active mine fields for a living. Beadle always wanted to be a Marine. Born April 23, 1943 in Philadelphia, he knew military service was a calling at a young age. With the approval of his father, he enlisted early at the age of 17 in 1960. After finishing boot camp at Paris Island, SC, he joined C Company, 8th Engineers Support Battalion at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was trained as combat demolition and explosive expert. He bravely cleared mine fields and neutralized explosives for fellow infantrymen. He became so good at it that he eventually trained troops in the craft of mine warfare. Corporal Beadle fought in jungle warfare in Japan while stationed in Okinawa and eventually was stationed at Camp Pendleton in CA where led a team of eight men as an combat engineers in the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines. His job was finding and clearing explosives and demolitions. In July of 1965, his country decided to put Sergeant Beadle’s expertise to use in the jungles of Vietnam. He did what he was trained to do; clear mine fields of explosives so his fellow servicemen would have safe passage to finish the mission. Three months after he landed, Beadle was wounded by a land mine on November 11, 1965 in Chu Lai, Vietnam. The injuries to Beadle’s legs were severe. He lost one of his legs and badly injured the other. Doctors and medics were thankfully able to

By Stacy Allsbrook-Huisman

save the injured leg. After being stabilized, he was flown back home to the Naval hospital in Philadelphia to be closer to family. Sergeant Beadle was awarded the Purple Heart while still recovering from his injuries in Vietnam. Being a Marine was a family affair. Beadle’s two other brothers also joined the Marines and fought in Vietnam as well as other family members. His younger brothers, Robert and Harry Beadle enlisted at the first chance they could to join him. His youngest brother, Harry Beadle, was killed in action in 1968 at the tender age 19. Gordon Beadle has his brother’s Purple Heart medal, something he cherishes. Sergeant Gordon Beadle, USMC had planned to make being a Marine a lifetime career. He medically retired with full benefits after his injury. After hours and hours of therapy and hard work, he was able to walk with a prosthetic leg. He started a new life, went to college and started a successful business. But all would be for nothing if he hadn’t met the love of his life on a blind date. Celebrating her 18th birthday, Susan was picked up at her house by a handsome stranger in a suit and tie, carrying a wrapped birthday present. It was necklace that Gordon had picked out as nice gesture to his mysterious date. He’s a Marine and gentleman. They were married June 13, 1970 and have three children and five grandchildren. Happy 75th Birthday Sgt. Gordon Beadle, USMC Retired. Oorah! Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

Five Reasons Cruises Are a Popular Family Vacation The world is a family’s oyster when taking a cruise vacation – offering the opportunity to discover new places together and participate in activities designed for all ages, all while creating unforgettable memories. According to Dream Vacations in Lithia, Fla., family cruises are increasing in popularity as a result of new ships and innovations in the market. “Families are cruising more because they offer such a wide variety of activities that appeal to cruisers of all ages and which can be enjoyed individually or in a group,”,” said Jenifer Breaux, Dream Vacations franchise owner and travel expert in Lithia. “Before providing a quote, I like to get to know my clients first and what they like, do not like, and what they enjoy doing. One size does not fit all.” The top five reasons a cruise is the ideal family vacation are: 1. Interests for everyone: With many options such as family karaoke, mini-golf, scavenger hunts and more, options are built into the vacation. 2. Destinations: With cruise ports around the world, there are so many places and things to explore: history, ruins, hiking, cultures, snorkeling, food experiences and more. 3. Set your own schedule: Families’ schedules during the weeks and months are packed with mandatory obligations, but on a cruise, you can pick and choose what you want to do, or do nothing and relax. Everything is at your fingertips. 4. Unpack Once: Large ships and smaller river boats provide the transportation and access to places around the world. The benefit is that you do not have to navigate a car, hop on or off a bus, and only have to unpack once. 5. Entertainment: Everything from a comedy show, live musicians, nightclubs with DJs, to a full-length Broadway musical and everything in between is found on a cruise ship and is included in the cost of the cruise. There are several popular options for families within driving distance of Hillsborough County that depart out of Tampa, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale. These cruises offer 3-7 day length itineraries that cruise to Cuba, Bahamas, Western, Eastern, and Southern. People often think that using a travel expert is expensive, but they can often provide significant savings and offer exclusive promotions on top of the cruise lines promotion. For more information or to be matched with the vacation of your dreams, please call Jenifer Breaux of Dream Vacations at 813.667.7000 or visit www.JBVacationPros.com.

Students from all over Hillsborough County showed off their science and engineering skills with help from the sun last month at the annual EnergyWhiz Expo held at McLane Middle School in Brandon. The event, open to students in fourth to eighth grade, was made up of two events, the Junior Solar Sprint Race and the Solar Cook Off. The Solar Sprint judged cars, created by students and powered by the sun, on design, innova-

tion and performance in a 20-meter, wireguided sprint race. The cook-off was a two part contest where students designed a functional solar cooker and created a dish in it. “The event is a great way to highlight solar energy and its many uses,” said Mike Wilson, McLane’s robotics engineering technology teacher who runs the event. “We host this every year to get students excited about engineering and interested in STEM-based careers. Students who participate are able to design, build and test devices that get

Middle School also earned a spot at the state expo with their unique front wheel drive solar car. “I have a lot of fun building and fixing stuff and learning the mechanics of it all,” said Canon. The Jalapeño team from Chiles Elementary School won first place in the cook-off with a Mexican inspired meal of taco seasoned ground beef and homemade guacamole. According to Wilson, the cook-off event was developed to provide a real world solar thermal challenge for the students. Each team prepared their dish, discussed their cooker with the judges and answered questions from attendees. McLane is one of four schools in Hillsborough County with a STEM academy offering students an opportunity to learn advanced programming and engineering. Volunteers help co-op members fill their bins with the week’s selection of fruits and vegetables.

The Cypress Creek Produce Coop has found a new weekly distribution point in FishHawk Ranch. It has partnered with The Chapel at FishHawk near Park Square to create a weekly pick-up location for fruits, vegetables, fresh-baked breads, honey and more. The co-op has been in operation for two years with multiple pick up sites across S.E. Hillsborough County and owner Cassie Adams has had many requests for a FishHawk location. “We’ve had so many residents asking us to bring our co-op to FishHawk and we finally found a perfect location right at The Chapel of FishHawk in the heart of the neighborhood,” said Adams who also distributes wholesale produce and came up with the co-op idea after finding a surplus in wholesale produce available. With the co-op, Adams and her fellow admins on the Cypress Creek coop Facebook page post a listing of what fruits and veggies will be available in the weekly bin and customers order either a medium or large bin through a Google Docs form. Payment is collected upon pick-up and there is a one-time registration/join fee to join the co-op of $5. Currently medium bins are reserved for $20 per week and large for $30 per week. The picks up are typically in 2.5-hour windows one day per week. For The Chapel at FishHawk, the pick-up is Thursday nights from 5:30-8 p.m. An assembly line is set up and coop members bring totes or bins to collect their produce and go down the line to assemble their allotment. Volunteers, including students, can earn

in operation, volunteers estimate that about 200 to 300 people arrive at each pickup site to collect their bins, with the Winthrop/St. Matthews stop being the busiest. “We have Co-op members who pickup extra bins just to drop them at their neighbors and volunteers who work an extra shift and donate their bin.” In addition to the bins, co-op members have the opportunity to add-on fresh breads, locally sourced honey and extra produce. To learn more about the Cypress Creek Produce Co-op, and to get a list of all their pickup locations which currently include FishHawk, Cypress Creek, Sundance, Moose Lodge, Summerfield and Winthrop/St. Matthews, join their Facebook group at Cypress Creek Produce Co-op. If you don’t have a Facebook page, but still want to become a member, email cypresscreekcoop@gmail.com to get a link to an order form as well as to ask any questions you may have. Students Use Full Week Of Positive Actions To Make An Impact

By Kate Quesada

Students at Bloomingdale High School participated in Positivity Week last month to push back against school violence and raise money for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Bloomingdale High School students used a unique strategy to make an impact last month. The school’s Student Government Association (SGA) members encouraged all students to participate in a Positivity Week in an effort to push back against school violence. Events throughout the week included High Five Monday, Team Kindness Tuesday, Compliment Thursday, where students were encouraged to write a compliment slip, supplied by the SGA, during lunch and share it with a peer, and Fist Bump Friday. “A fist bump, a compliment, a high five - they are small gestures from a classmate that could make a big difference in a student’s life when it comes to feeling connected and involved at school,” said Hillsborough County Public School’s Media Outreach, Tanya Arja. According to the school’s S.G.A. teacher sponsor, Amanda LaFoe, the idea for the week was initiated at a monthly district S.G.A. meeting after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “Our goal is to create a district wide initiative to encourage students to get to know their peers through positive actions,” said LaFoe, who also teaches Government and History at the school.

“We are trying to build a trust among our students. Letting the students build trust with their teachers and faculty members, I think that’s what’s happened recently.” Students feel that the message from the week will leave a lasting impact. “I find that a lot of times, people just walk in the hallways and look the other way,” said Senior Haley Lazzara. “I’ve been making it my mission to reach out and say hi to people in the hallways more than I usually do, just so people feel welcome and comfortable, and make them feel better about themselves and better about the community they’e in and the school they go to every day.” Students also raised money for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School through the purchase of maroon shirts which they wore on the Wednesday of Positivity Week. “I hope that Positivity Week sets precedent that we are here together,” said Senior Ashley Russell. “If you have a problem, you need to talk to somebody and know that you are not alone.” Bloomingdale High School is located at 1700 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico. For information, at 744-8018 or visit www.bloomingdale.mysdhc.org.

It’s Spring! Remember These Safety Tips Around Alligators All types of animals are becoming active throughout Central Florida. Alligators, in particular, are being seen regularly through the area, and alligators become more aggressive and territorial as mating season begins. GatorWorld Parks of Florida offers these safety tips if you should encounter an alligator on your property or out in the area’s many parks and lakes. Stay back. Keep at least 30 ft. between you and the alligator. If they begin to hiss, you are definitely too close. Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn. Do not swim during this time. Do not assume alligators are slow. Alligators can move very quickly, so it is best to keep a safe distance. Understand typical alligator habitats. Alligators prefer to bask in the sun along the banks of water. Be aware of these types of areas while enjoy our areas vast lake and water system. Fishing near alligators is not recommended. If an alligator moves toward your favorite fishing spot, it is best to relocate for your safety and the safety of the alligator. Remember, fishing line kills wildlife. Also, dispose of your fish scraps in cans at the boat ramps. Do not throw

the scraps back in the water. Pets are typically the size of alligator prey. Keep your pets away from the water’s edge and do not let you pet drink in the water. Never feed an alligator. Avoid piles of twigs, grasses and disturbed soil near the water’s edge. It could be a nest, and female alligators will get aggressive to protect it. “GatorWorld Parks of Florida works closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission as we serve as a rescue and relocation facility for some nuisance alligators. We’ve specifically designed our park to showcase alligators safely,” explained GatorWorld Parks of Florida developer Don Buckner. If you are concerned about an alligator on your property, contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Alligator Nuisance line at 866-FWC-GATOR. For a close encounter with an alligator and to see these beautiful reptiles up close and safely, visit GatorWorld of Florida. It is located at 492 W. Hwy. 44 in Wildwood, a little over an hour’s drive. Visitors are offered opportunities to drive through a scenic trail and view alligators in their natural habitat. It is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed Sundays. For more information, visit GatorWorldParks.com.

Visiting Tallahassee For Family Fun Is A Capital Idea Are you looking to spend your summer vacation close to home? About four hours northwest of the Tampa Bay area is Tallahassee, Florida’s State Capital. Whether you are a nature lover, thrill seeker or a history buff, you will find something nearby to make this an exciting trip. For history buffs and those that want to learn about Florida’s political history, visit the Florida Historic Capitol Museum. The Historic Capitol has symbolized Florida state government since 1845. Restored to its 1902 appearance, it stands as an icon at the center of Florida’s Capitol complex; the modern-day nerve center of Florida’s government. Visitors experience the people and events that have shaped the state through photos, recordings and audiovisual displays. Together with exhibit panels, photographs, and interactive multimedia, the museum offers a journey through the colorful history of government in Florida. The complex is located at 400 S. Monroe St. Visit www.flhistoriccapitol.gov. Hensley Wins Courage Award Photos courtesy of Judy Moore

The Morales family sponsors a spirit award that was presented to Nicholas Hensley. Aly Smith (left), Nicholas Hensley, Zuhally Smith and Mike Smith.

“Nicholas is an inspiration to others,” said Judy Moore, coach at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center. “He displays good sportsmanship, courage and perseverance.” During the opening ceremonies at the recent area Special Olympics at Jesuit High School, Nicholas Hensley was awarded the Zenay Morales Courage Award. This award is given annually in memory of Zenay Morales, a Special Olympics athlete. Since 2001, the award has been presented to a Special Olympics competitor who exemplifies the true spirit and courage of a Special Olympics athlete. Nicholas’ mother, Sandra Hensley, says that her son is very competitive and loves to win. “He likes getting out there, being active and social,” she said. “He just has a blast.” Hensley has been an athlete in the Tennis For Fun program at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center

for 16 years. According to his coach, Rosanna Chiaramonte, he has competed in basketball, tennis, swimming, bowling, cycling, soccer and track and field. “He has a very great spirit despite not being in good health,” said Chiaramonte. He has a condition called Trisomy 11-18. His mother said that when he was 5 months old the doctors told her that he wouldn’t live to be half her age. He is now 34 and is the oldest person known to have this condition. He was recently in the hospital for pneumonia. “Despite all that, he is always cheerful and is always smiling,” said Chiaramonte. “He just makes your day.” “No matter what, he never gives up, he keeps on trying,” said Hensley. “We are very proud of him.” Tennis For Fun is a free tennis clinic for special needs people. Connection Strong Dogs Wheelchair Basketball Team Finishes 8th In Nation By Nick Nahas The Tampa Bay Strong Dogs are one of the best wheelchair basketball teams in the nation. They are currently ranked 8th in the country, and have been to Louisville, Kentucky for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association championship tournament for nine consecutive years. The Strong Dogs finished 8th in the country this season after their appearance at nationals. They took the eventual champions, the San Diego Wolfpack, down to the wire. They lost by four points to the Wolfpack, but were one of the few teams that were competitive against them. “This team played their hearts out,” said Wayne Bozeman, head coach of the Strong Dogs. “I wouldn’t trade this team… because of the heart they have.” The team, is led by Bozeman, a Recreation Therapist for the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department. Bozeman became the leader of the team 10

years ago after inquiries from some injured veterans at the VA Hospital. They are a part of Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay, a signature program of the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department. The team has a total of 26 players, 15 on the division II team that went to nationals, and 11 on the new division III team. Some of the players have spina bifida, and others are amputees or have spinal cord injuries. A few of the players are injured veterans as well. “To me, they are the best basketball players out there, not just our guys, but everybody,” Bozeman said. “It’s not about their disability, it’s about their ability.” According to Bozeman, the team

will start training for next season in about a month. They practice two hours a day, twice a week at the All People’s Life Center on 6105 E. Sligh Ave., Tampa. They held several car washes to raise money for the expenses to attend the tournament, but the players had to pay out of pocket for some of it. They plan on doing more fundraisers next year.

Bozeman would like to thank Hillsborough County and Paralympic Sport Tampa Bay for all that they do for the team and encourages anybody with a lower extremity injury to come and participate. For more information, you can search for their page, @tbsdofficial on Facebook.

Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays- May 2018 Star Wars Day * Train Day * Chocolate Chip Day * Hamburger Day

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesserknown holidays throughout the year, as found on www.timeanddate.com/holidays/fun. The month of May is well known for its flowers (after our April showers) as well as Mother’s Day and the everpopular Cinco de Mayo. However, if you are looking for additional yet non-traditional fun days to celebrate – allow us introduce you to a few lesser-known May holidays. Let’s begin in a galaxy far, far way, where fans across the globe celebrate Star Wars day every May 4. Did you know this day came about quite by accident? As legend has it, in 2005 a German television news channel incorrectly translated this famous Star Wars quote. "May the force be with you," was mistakenly interpreted in German as "We are with you on May 4th.” In honor of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Hans Solo and Yoda, grab a bag of popcorn and watch the original Star Wars movie that was released in May 1977. If the force is strong within you, host a Star Wars party and serve Darth Vader Taters, Yoda Soda in Hans Solo Cups, Jabba the Hummus, Wookie Cookies and Princess Leia Cinnamon Buns. Party ideas you need? Visit www.forkly.com/food/10-unbelievablestar-wars-party-foods/. After your Star Wars festivities, how about commemorating National Train Day on Saturday May 12? In 1869, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads were laying train tracks across the American frontier, for what would

soon become the first Transcontinental rail line. Construction was grueling, as much of the wild, wild west was unchartered territory. In May 1869 the tracks of the two railroad companies met up at Promontory Summit, Utah and a golden spike was driven into the final track. The first Transcontinental rail line was 1,776 miles long and ran from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. It took a mere 83 hours of travel time from New York City to San Francisco. At the time, it was inconceivable that people could travel across the entire nation in less than four days. To honor this remarkable achievement, consider a visit to the Florida Railroad Museum located a few miles south of Sun City Center at 12210 83rd St. E. in Parrish. Throughout the year, the Museum also schedules special event weekends that couple exciting themes with a ride on the train, including a train robbery, World War II reenactment and a trip to the North Pole. For more information visit www.frrm.org. What do people do after a fun day of riding trains? They eat chocolate chip cookies, of course! Tuesday, May 15 is

the cherished chocolate chip. For those who can’t control themselves from stealing chocolate chip cookie dough balls from the cookie sheet, Eddie Bull’s Cookie Dough can satisfy your sweettooth without worry. It’s almost impossi-

BULL to make a batch of chocolate chip cookies without wanting to taste the batter! Visit Eddie Bull’s Cookie Dough Company at Collins Produce located at 2810 S.R. 60 in Valrico or order online at www. eddiebullscookiedough.com. If you like big buns and you cannot lie, then National Hamburger on May 28 is your day. ‘Lettuce’ celebrate by treating ourselves to the delicious and most iconic American food. After all, what would a Memorial Day or Forth of July grill-out be without the very American hamburger? It is only appropriate that we have a special day to celebrate our beloved burgers. Do you prefer a cheeseburger in paradise? I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57 and french-fried potatoes. So does Jimmy Buffet. If you don’t want to get stuck in ‘burgatory,’ take the family to celebrate National Hamburger day at one of the many fabulous restaurants in our community including, but not limited to: Chicago’s Best Burgers located at 1925a W. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon, Square 1 located at 2042 Badlands Dr. in Brandon, and Wayback Burgers located at 5672 FishHawk Crossing Blvd. in Lithia. If you are still searching for something to celebrate in May, check out these other fun days: May 5 – National Oyster Day May 9 – Lost Sock Memorial Day May 14 – Dance Like A Chicken Day May 16 – National Sea Monkey Day May 27 National Sunscreen Day

Students Perform At Annual Celebration Showcase, My Art My Way

Students from area schools including Eisenhower Middle School in Gibsonton and Lennard High School in Ruskin, performed at the Annual Celebration Showcase sponsored by VSA Florida, Hillsborough County Schools and the University Area Community Development Corporation. This final performance allows the students to show off what they learned during an eight-week Artist in Residency Program called My Art My Way.

On Monday, April 16, students from area schools travelled to the University Area Community Development Corporation in Tampa for the Annual Celebration Showcase sponsored by VSA Florida, Hillsborough County Public School and the University Area Community Development Corporation. This showcase is the culminating performance for My Art My Way, an Artist in Residency Program for students with and without disabilities. This year, students from Madison Middle School in Tampa, Eisenhower Middle School in Gibsonton, Yates Elementary School in Brandon and Lennard High School in Ruskin performed. Teaching artists who participated in the My Art My Way Artist in Residency Program included Aaron Legley, Taino Puig and Nanci Dorau. The artists taught performing arts lessons at the respective schools for eight hours over the past few months. The performances at the Celebration Showcase included dancing, movement, music and singing. For instance, the students from

Lennard High School performed You’ve Got A Friend as a group and with solos. Taino Puig said of the students, “I am very proud of the students. I had something that we had begun practicing and then one day I came in and they had come up with something different all on their own and had practiced It on

their own.” VSA Florida is a non-profit that provides, supports and champions arts education and cultural experiences for and by people with disabilities. VSA conducts arts education programs in schools, Department of Juvenile Justice facilities and at community centers. VSAFL is headquartered at the College of Education at the University of South Florida. Jennifer Sabo is the Executive Director. Sabo said, “We had a total of eight residencies funded. The students work for eight weeks with the artists, and then they get to come on stage and perform what they learned. The students get a sense of confidence by showing that they can do this.” In addition to the performing arts showcase, VSA has a visual art exhibit that will be featured at the Contemporary Art Museum at USF. “We try to give the students a culminating event to show off their hard work,” added Sabo. Bay Life Supports Missions Through Cars And Crafts At Popular Car Show Bay Life Church will hold its 13th Annual Car Show and Craft Fair on Saturday, May 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on its church grounds. The familyfriendly event will feature more than 450 cars and trucks, local craft vendors, live music, raffles, refreshments and child activities. The Bay Life Car Show has become a staple in the community with crowds reaching upward of 3,000 guests. With an increasing number of attendees and displayed vehicles, the car show is a far cry from its humble beginning of only 20 cars. All makes and models of cars are welcomed with more than 10 categories receiving trophies. Although the show car registration is free, Bay Life is requesting that car show participants make a voluntary $10 donation to support missions. “The car show supports our high school student and adult mission trips,” said Steve Schumm, Bay Life’s Mission Director. “This is our largest fundraiser to support missions. This year we are going to Honduras, Africa, New York City and North Georgia.” In addition to the hundreds of cars on display, the event hosts live performances

He continued, “The youth will be out there doing a lot of the work like taking car registration, entertaining children and selling food and raffle tickets. ” Participants may register their vehicles online at the Bay Life website or on the day of the event. Camp BSAC

Brandon Sports & Aquatics (BSAC) impacts lives and the community as a whole by providing over 10,000 swim lessons per year, in conjunction with its mission to prevent youth drowning. It also provides quality affordable childcare for working families. There is programming for the special needs population with its Team Trident Program, which is focused on three main areas: active recreation, proper socialization and interpersonal skills, and independent life skills. There is something at BSAC for every child. Over the past 55 years local families have counted on BSAC to provide year-round, quality sports, recreation and educational experiences for their children. We are a favorite of working parents who want to feel good about where they are leaving their kids every day; that the kids are safe, are learning valuable athletic and social skills and are practicing good leadership. Summer Camp at BSAC is a place for all children to be active, exploratory, creative, independent, playful, friendly, and confident. Join in for BSAC’s Passport to Adventure where your child will experience food, games and culture from all around the world. Both full day, half day and drop-in options at an affordable rate are offered. There are field trips

weekly for all ages too. Every week the children will ‘travel’ to a new region of the globe, earning passport stamps as they go. They will dazzle you with the stories of their daily adventures as they bring out their inner Beast Mode in Africa and Seas the Day exploring the Islands. Along with the Summer Camp Experience, additional programming, such as swim lessons are offered. The Learn to Swim Program is the most comprehensive swim lesson program in our area, working with ages six months and up. These are conveniently offered during your child’s Summer Camp day.

Newsome’s Fellowship Of Christian Students Club Ushers In Nights Of Worship

By Amanda Boston

Newsome FCS Club students host Christian Worship.

On March 20 and April 17, Newsome’s Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS) Club, along with students from local youth groups, hosted two nights of Christian worship in the Newsome auditorium. “Night of Worship was birthed in the hearts of two Newsome senior students who attend Fishhawk Fellowship Church,” said Paige Eilertson, an Area Representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). “Chris Pinedo and Juliana Valdes had the vision and asked for the support from Newsome’s FCS Club.” The pair promoted and organized the Night of Worship through Newsome’s student-led club FCS, another title for FCA. Both nights of worship lasted for an hour and emphasized simplicity—worship music, a message and prayer. Valdes said, “Chris and I printed and cut out hundreds of cards to give to people, and it also blew up on social media, especially Instagram.” She continued, “But I feel like the reason we had a big turnout is because we had been praying about this event from the start.”

Eilertson continued, “I’m happy to support and pray for students as they shamelessly take the lead in lifting the name of Jesus.” She continued, “I am excited that several students from other schools and homeschool attended. The nights were a huge success.” Newsome’s Night of Worship continues to generate excitement across social media and is paving the way for other schools to follow suit. Eighthgrader Tyler Eads, the FCA president at Mulrennan Middle School, is organizing a Night of Worship for all middle schoolers on Friday, May 11 at 7 p.m. at Mulrennan. Valdes expressed, “It was so great when Tyler reached out to us after hearing about our Night of Worship, and he is now planning one at his school. I hope other schools will do the same.” Valdes also spoke about the future of Newsome’s Night of Worship and said, “We felt it was important to do another one for the graduating seniors. We plan to make Night of Worship a quarterly event and have plenty of juniors ready to take this over next year.” Since 1945, the FCA has been making a positive impact in the schools and community. For more information about the local FCA, visit www.fcatampabay.org. For further questions on upcoming events, please contact Paige at Peilertson@fca.org.

Non-Anesthetic Dental Cleanings Do More Harm Than Good For Our Pets

By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH

Proper dental cleanings for pets are exactly the same as they are for humans. People, however, understand what happens during the procedure and hold still, even though they don't like the way it feels. Pets, however, do not understand and typically will not hold still. They have to be forcibly restrained, which not only is traumatic and stressful, but also may lead to injury of the pet or the person who is attempting to restrain the pet. Non-anesthetic dental cleanings are not the same as traditional dental cleanings; in fact, they do not even come close to a true dental cleaning. Instead, they are more cosmetic in nature and simply remove as much of the visible tartar and plaque build-up that is possible with this type of procedure. In recent years, a cottage industry has evolved that takes advantage of pet owners' fear of having their pets placed under anesthesia. Sometimes it is groomers offering to brush a pet's teeth, which, realistically, doesn't accomplish anything useful (Imagine if you only brushed your teeth every four to eight weeks.) There are individuals, occasionally veterinary technicians or dental hygienists that travel from town to town, offering non-professional dental scaling’s on animals that have not been sedated. The cause of bad breath and kidney problems is the bacteria in the plaque

that is under the gumline. Periodontal disease originates in these deep, odorproducing pockets that require probing and scaling with sharp instruments. There is a reason why our dentists sometimes use nitrous oxide and novocaine shots while they are working under our gumlines; this degree of probing and scaling, which is necessary to complete a thorough cleaning, can be

quite painful. What most pet owners don't understand is that anesthesia actually is considered very safe. A recent study conducted nationally revealed that only one in 10,000 veterinary patients had an adverse experience when placed under anesthesia. Veterinarians have done a great job of educating pet owners about the imperative need for preventative dental care for their four-legged family members. Here's why it is so important; by three years of age, approximately 85 percent of dogs already have periodontal disease that needs medical attention. In fact, many popular toy breeds lose permanent teeth as early as five years of age if preventative dental care is not performed. The new challenge for veterinarians is to prevent pet owners from being lulled into a false sense of security by these nonprofessionals offering an ill-advised procedure.
