Kid’s Community College Narrows Achievement Gap, Individualizes Instruction By Amy Schechter
KCC students excel in science.
In a recent study through the Educational Leadership and Counseling Department at Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University, Riverview South Kid’s Community College K-8 (KCC) was one of only seven schools in the state able to reverse the science achievement gap, and African American students outpaced their white counterparts on the 2016-2017 state science assessment. Established in 2003, KCC is a K8 charter with the goal of providing an individualized education based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence Theory to each of its students. KCC is committed to a more well-rounded approach to education that takes into account spatial, kinesthetic, musical, inter/intrapersonal,
and naturalist intelligences. By recognizing and building upon the unique gifts each student brings and supplementing a student’s challenge areas, professors tailor an instructional approach to scaffold all students to success. “At KCC, students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics,” explained KCC Servant Leader, Tim Kilpatrick. Karen Seder, Campus Director, could not be more proud of her students’ success: “KCC is now and has always been dedicated to the well-being and educational success of every child.” These statistics affirm KCC’s conceptual framework, but it is the students’ excitement for learning that really drives Seder and her staff. Seeing the smiles on students’ faces when they brought back two 1st place and one 3rd place Elementary Science Fair awards and a 2nd place Middle School award is the real reward. KCC is a free public charter for all students in Hillsborough County. With nine campuses to choose from, there is a KCC near you ready to meet your child’s needs. For more information, visit online at mykidscc.org or email info@kidscc.org. KCC Riverview South K-8 is located at 10030 Mathog Rd. in Riverview. Contact Karen Seder at 671-1440 or kseder@kidscc.org.

Apollo Beach Massage Therapy Appreciates 15 Years Of Happy Customers Apollo Beach residents, Bill and Louise Smith, have been providing therapeutic massage services to their clients since they opened their doors at Apollo Beach Massage Therapy more than 15 years ago. “Louise and I started Apollo Beach Massage in 2003 after I retired from a career in telecommunications and information technology,” said Bill. “We were long-term residents of Apollo Beach and we liked the relaxed atmosphere that community provided.“ After his retirement, Bill attended Sarasota School of Massage at the age of 58 and began practicing massage immediately upon graduation. “Although, massage therapy was a retirement career for both of us, it also introduced the challenges associated with owning and managing a small business,” said Bill. “Louise was instrumental in setting up the business, including furnishing and decorating the office and managing the finances.” The couple was committed to creating a team of massage therapists whose training, experience and customer service met their high standards. “We were fortunate to have other great massage therapists join us in the business,” said Bill. “We are eternally grateful for their services. with us – Lana Berkman, Sandy Duran and Robin Trotter.” Apollo Beach massage provides a wide range of therapeutic services including several massage modalities – Swedish, neuromuscular, myofascial release, lymphatic drainage, micro-point stimulation and others. There are also spa services available such as hot stone massage and salt scrubs, but the primary focus at Apollo Beach Massage is a blend of therapeutic techniques tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual. Microcurrent Point Stimulation (MPS) is perhaps the most unique of the services offered. This is an integrative therapy utilizing the protocols developed for the Dolphin MPS device. The device locates and applies DC microcurrent to acupuncture and trigger points for the purpose of relaxing muscles, calming the nervous system and releasing endorphins which are the body’s natural painkillers. Apollo Beach Massage Therapy welcomes new clients and is offering a Father’s Day special for June which includes two one-hour massages for $120, a savings of $10 for the two. Apollo Beach Massage Therapy is located at 100 Frandorson Cir. Ste. 201. in Apollo Beach. The center is open by appointment, which can be booked by calling 641-9118 or visiting ApolloBeachMassageTherapy.com.

Tampa’s Riverwalk Offers History, Culture And Entertainment
By Kathy L. Collins
Downtown Tampa is full of amenities and activities for individuals and families to enjoy. One of the newest additions is the completed Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is approximately 2.6 miles in length. It begins or ends from either the Tampa History Center or the Armature Works. You can begin at either end or anywhere in the middle. A walk along the Riverwalk is not only fun, but you get a look at Tampa's entertainment and cultural places and a walk back in time to Tampa's history. The Friends of the Riverwalk have placed historical busts along the Riverwalk. These include Clara Frye, an African American nurse. The original Tampa General Hospital building was renamed after her in 1991. Blanche Armwood was an educator, activist and first African American woman to graduate from an accredited law school. Armwood High School in Seffner is named in her honor. Ossian Bingley Hart was the 10th Governor of the State of Florida and the first one to

The Perfect Wedding Band
N
ow that you have your engagement ring and settled on your venue and dress, it’s time to pick out the perfect band to accompany your lefthand sparkler.
There are many factors to consider. Cost, comfort and overall style are a few of the most important ones.
SET YOUR BUDGET
Ironically, wedding bands are one of the most overlooked costs of planning a wedding — and they can be expensive. However, you can find beautiful rings in every budget. It is important to balance what you can afford with what you want to see on your hand for the rest of your life. Be sure to account for bands for both you and your significant other. Materials (gold, platinum or titanium) and gemstones will factor into the final price.
MATCHING YOUR RING VERSUS MATCHING YOUR PARTNER’S
Answering this question will help you narrow down your choices a lot. If you want your wedding bands to match, then you need to discuss elements that both of you do (and perhaps more importantly don’t) want. Or perhaps there is a wedding

band that matches your engagement ring. Be sure to discuss your options with your partner before hitting up a jewelry store.
TRY ‘EM ON
Nothing will help you make a decision faster than seeing
potential bands sitting next to your engagement ring. After you’ve set your budget and discussed your options with your significant other, it’s time to try on some rings. If you have the opportunity and the time, visit as many local jewelry stores as possi-
ble. You never know where you are going to find a deal and a truly breathtaking band. Plus, there is not much that beats spending a casual hour in a jewelry shop while associates bring you band after band to slip on your finger.
THROW OUT RULE BOOK
There are no hard-and-fast rules to what type of wedding band you should choose, including choosing none at all. Stay true to your own style and budget and you will end up with a ring you are eternally happy with.

our wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some well-earned relaxation. Honeymoon Packing 101
Your wedding will be beautiful and something you will remember for you entire life, but there is a small part of you that will be relieved to have the stress of planning such a major event behind you and looking forward to some wellearned relaxation. No matter if you’ve planned a relaxing week on the beach, adventure in the mountains or a quick city getaway, you want to make sure you bring everything you could possibly need. C
Make a List
Making a list is the first step to ensuring nothing important gets left behind. The key is not to make your list in one sitting or just a few days before departure. You need time to come back to it. Choose things that mix and match well, and that perhaps you can get more than one use out of if you will be gone for several days.
Consider Going Carry-On Only
Not having to check any luggage makes traveling so much easier and saves you precious time! Think about it. Would you rather be pacing around
a luggage carousel or be that much closer to sipping mai tais at the beachside bar? Try packing versatile pieces for your trip, or visit a local luggage store for things like pack-flat toiletry kits and packing cubes that can save serious room in your suitcase.
Checking a Bag
No matter how inconvenient, there are some bags you just need to check. Maybe your honeymoon is an extended trip or you will be hitting several destinations in varying climates. Whatever the reason, checking at least one bag might be your best bet. If this is the situation, planning your carry-on actually becomes more important in case your checked bag doesn’t arrive with you. Consider adding travel insurance to make sure you’re covered. Always pack at least one spare outfit, comfortable flats, a swimsuit and another spare outfit appropriate for dinner. This should get you through the first few days without your checked luggage before it is either found and delivered to you, or give you enough time to purchase replacements of essential items at your destination.

Wedding Party Rentals
ne of the most commonly told fibs about bridesmaids’ dresses is that you can wear them again. If you have ever been in a wedding, you know this is decidedly untrue for the most part.
Why is it that groomsmen can rent tuxes for a small fee and return them after the party while bridesmaids are left to pay hundreds of dollars on gowns they may only wear once? According to the the BRIDES American Wedding Study 2016, the average bridesmaids dress costs $133, and the majority of brides (66 percent) pick a color and allow their bridesmaids to choose the dress style while only 33 percent match both
color and style. This much freedom for today’s bridesmaid means you shouldn’t be afraid to exercise your right to rent rather than buy your dress.
RENTAL OPTIONS
Many local shops offer discount rental pricing based on dress style and number of people in your wedding party. Ask around prior to settling on your dress company to find the best deals for your bridesmaids. They will appre-

ciate both the discounted pricing and your effort in trying to ensure it. If you have enough in your budget, offer to pay for extra jewelry or accessories to show your bridesmaids you care. You may save enough on a rental deal to allow you to do so.
BRIDESMAID QUESTIONS TO ASK
While searching for fashion rental options, be sure to ask the following questions:
• What is your damage and incidentals policy? • How long can I rent the dress for? • If I like the dress, can I have the option to buy it? Let the answers to these questions guide your final decision. As the bride, remember to include your bridesmaids in the decision-making process. This will help keep everyone on the same page and ensure your friends’ enthusiasm on your special day.

Summer Wedding Details There are many advantages to getting married in the summer. For starters, It’s easier for people to take off work and the weather is more consistent. Make your wedding stand out by incorporating some of the following details. 1. A self-serve ice cream bar or snow cone cart. Both whimsical and refreshing, a snow cone cart or ice cream bar puts a new twist on wedding desserts. They also keep guests cool as a cucumber on a sultry summer day. Check with party rental companies to see what options they can offer. 2. Signature cocktails. You can have a signature cocktail no matter the season of your wedding. But a crisp cocktail in a bright color screams summer — not to mention many fruits and veggies are in season and at their height of flavor. Work with a local bartender to find out what’s in season to craft the best drink to reflect your tastes 3. Lawn games. The summer wedding season brings many an outdoor affair. Let guests make their own fun by offering a selection of lawn games croquet and lawn dice, which work well with players sport-
ing formal wear. 4. Sparklers. When things get late and it’s time to take your leave, do it in style by handing out sparklers for guests to light and line your path. 5. A seaside locale. Nothing says summertime more than a beach wedding or a lawn wedding by the sea. 6. Bright bouquets. Summer was made for bold colors — and Mother Nature agrees! Choose flowers in vivid colors like red, pink or yellow. Pick large blooms like peonies, hydrangeas or sunflowers. No matter what you decide to incorporate into your summer wedding, remember to always get quotes from as many local vendors as possible. Doing so will save money and uncover unique ideas that may help your special day stand out from the summer wedding crowd.

SWAT Women’s Group Expanding With Sun City Center Chapter
By Kate Quesada
The more than 300 members of the SWAT Networking Group have a new location at which they can meet to share leads and ideas this month. The group, whose name stands for Successful Women Aligning Together, recently created a Sun City Center Chapter which will meet the second Thursday of every month. SWAT is an organization dedicated to helping successful women network and build relationships by meeting other professionals, learning marketing techniques, making contacts and building business. “There is a need in the community for a networking organization like this,” said Founder and CEO Dr. Robyn Spirtas. “We provide a place for women in business to gather and support each other.” The Sun City Center group will meet at the Sandpiper Grille for lunch in the private banquet room. “We had several SWAT Sisters that are now living in Sun City and we know it is a growing thriving area so we decided it would be a good fit,” said Spirtas, who has also founded chapters in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, Venice, Manasota, Parrish and Anna Maria Island. Women who decide to join SWAT become members of the organization, not the chapter, and can attend meet-
owners, representatives of businesses, sales people and even people looking for work. “We are a unique organization of where a sorority meets a business meeting,” said Spirtas. “We call each other SWAT sisters and support one another personally and professionally.” The Sandpiper Grille is located at 1702 S. Pebble Beach Blvd. in Sun City Center. The next meeting will take place on June 14 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. For more information, visit swatnetworking.com or call call Spirtas at (941) 962-0884.

Not Your Normal Entertainment (NYNE), through its community theatre division, will present The Last Five Years, on Saturday, June 30 at Cater Tampa at The Chateau in Valrico. Tickets to the Dinner Buffet and Show are $60 per person. The event begins at 8 p.m. The Last Five Years is rated PG-13. As is a NYNE tradition, The Last Five Years will be accompanied by a live pit orchestra performing with the show. The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show's unconventional structure consists of two characters. Cathy, the woman, tells her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically. The two characters only meet once, at their wedding which takes place in the middle of the show. The Last Five Years is a two-person show that examines modern day miscommunication in marriages. The show will make you think about how you and your significant other communicate or do not communicate. The Last Five Years stars Devan Kelty as Jamie and Rachel RodriguezHughes as Cathy. Kelty last acted in Mad
and founder of NYNE said, "This show is different than most shows because it only has a two-person cast. The entire show rides on these performers, and their chemistry must be intense in order to make the audience believe they are a dysfunctional (but typical) married couple." NYNE was just founded in the fall of 2017. Since then, NYNE has grown a lot. "After the success of our first production, IF/THEN, and a great review on BroadwayWorld.com, we moved into our own rehearsal and teaching space in Brandon," said Scarbrough. "We joined the Brandon a Chamber of Commerce and the American Association of Community Theaters," added Scarbrough. You can now take guitar lessons and learn how to read music. NYNE continues to provide a community chorus and an orchestra that anyone can join. If you miss The Last Five Years, you can see Cabaret in October. For more information on NYNE, please visit nyneshows.com. NYNE is located at 220 W. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon.

Longtime Journalist Creates 813Preps.com To Cover High School Baseball At a time when high school baseball coverage in Hillsborough County is dwindling, Jarrett Guthrie, founder and creator of 813Preps.com, a website that highlights and covers local baseball games and players, has filled a void. Guthrie, a journalist for almost 20 years, shies away from being in the spotlight himself, he would much rather be on the sidelines covering athletes, recording their accomplishments and stories. Guthrie grew up with sports being a big part of his life. “When I was a kid playing little league, you hit a double and your coach would yell at you, that you got your name in the paper,” said Guthrie. “There was a part of me that felt that it was disappointing that the kids of this generation won’t have those kind of keepsakes or won’t have those kind of things to look back on.” He created 813Preps.com near the end of the 2017 season. He has covered countless baseball games since then. His sole purpose of this website, he said, is for the student-
