Couple Gets Engaged At ‘Senior’ Prom Community Rallies Behind 24 Families By Mia Cafaro Affected By Apartment Fire months ago at the Town N’ Country

When fire broke out at the Allegro Palms Condos in Riverview last month, more than 80 people were displaced from their homes. But from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) to students at Spoto High School, the community assisted officials and rallied behind its residents, helping them find places to live and replacing lost items and clothing. According to Eric Seidel, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer, 24 households were damaged by the fire, which is likely to have been caused by one of two lightning strikes in the area. Metropolitan Ministries, the Hillsborough County Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross began work right away to help the displaced and upon hearing of the need, the community responded quickly with help for the victims. “Retail stores on Bloomingdale Ave., Target and Wal-Mart, got involved with donations,” said HCSO Community Resource Deputy Clifford Fletcher. “We partnered with them by delivering clothing, beds and other items to the apartment collection center.” Six of the families had ties to nearby Spoto High School, so when school English Department Head Adam Sherman and Ninth Grade Reading Team Leader Millie Fleming realized some of their own needed help, they jumped into action. On June 22, the lives of Jaime Rodriguez, age 78, and Luz Rivera, age 69, changed forever when Rodriguez popped the question at the ‘senior’ prom hosted by Hillsborough County at The Regent in Riverview. At first glance, the prom looked like any other party, complete with loud music, elaborate costumes, and dancing couples. The prom court strutted their way out to center stage, and the king and queen were crowned. It was after this that a surprise event took place. Rivera was asked to come to center stage, much to her surprise. Rodriguez followed her out, telling the emcee, “If I get down on a knee, you’ll have to help me up.” “When I first saw this lady, I thought, This is it!” Rodriguez announced to the crowd before asking Rivera to marry him. She gave an ecstatic “Yes!” and he slipped an engagement ring on her finger. The couple then danced to Love Me Tender, and was congratulated by groups of supportive friends. Rodriguez and Rivera met six
Senior Center. They started dating two months ago with a dinner trip to Bahama Breeze. Rivera’s daughter Variluz Soto, who was there for the proposal, said “They party every day.” Rivera was married to Soto’s father for 38 years before they divorced. After the divorce, she did not think she could ever see herself with anyone else until she met Rodriguez. When asked if he had been married before, Rodriguez quietly answered that he had been married four times, before playfully putting a finger to his lips. Rodriguez and Rivera have not yet made any wedding plans, but are already scheming for their honeymoon. They plan to either take a cruise, or visit Puerto Rico, where they are both originally from. “Our life is going to change,” said Rivera. The heartwarming proposal was done in public so the couple could share their joy with their many friends and declare their love for one another. “It shows you can find love at any age,” said Frances Duran Brea, the general manager for the Town N’ Country center. Rodriguez and Rivera will be spending the rest of their days side-by-side at the Town N’ Country center, where more adventures are sure to come.

Uplift Women’s Network Comes To Bass Pro Shops Makes Generous Fishing Reel Donation To Local Nonprofits Campo Family YMCA By Manuela Graf Life sometimes brings trials and tribulations as one strives to overcome obstacles that might come their way. A new group at Campo Family YMCA called Uplift Women’s Network empowers women by building them up spiritually and fostering a sense of community with the understanding that an issue does not have to be faced alone. In November 2017, Heather Simpson, J.D. founded Uplift Women’s Network and leads it. This faith-based organization came into fruition because the Lord placed it on Simpson’s heart. It consists of more than 20 diverse women of all ages, cultures and denominations. The intent of it is to bring women together through prayer, encouragement and friendship. Simpson shared how she feels in regards to being the leader of it. “I feel inspired by everyone who contributes as they build each other up in a positive and effective way,” Simpson said. The goal of this group is to see God lifted up in the women. To add, Simpson wants to see people grow in their faith and let them know they do not have to

need it. The organization started meeting at Campo Family YMCA in April of this year. Members and nonmembers of Campo Family YMCA can join. All women are welcome whether it be a mature Christian, new Christian or individuals who might be interested in becoming one. It meets the fourth Friday of each month from 7 p.m.- 9 p.m. Simpson also mentions how the group fits perfectly within the YMCA’s mission. “Overall, I feel blessed that the door opened for our group to meet here at Campo Family YMCA,” Simpson said. “We also see us growing further with our partnership with them and are excited for the future as well.” For more information, visit www.upliftwomensnetwork.com. Riverview Chamber of Commerce To Host Annual Teaching to Excellence Breakfast
Staff Report
Teachers Achieve Yoga Certification
By Kate Quesada
Dawson Elementary School Assistant Principal Ashley Wiese has a new skill set to use to improve the life of her students when the school year starts again next month. Wiese was
Educators for all over Hillsborough County became certified yoga instructors at a Breathe for Change training at Dawson Elementary School in Riverview last month.
For many years, Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce (GRCC) has honored local educators with a very special breakfast, known as Teaching to Excellence. The event is successful thanks to the incredible community support of GRCC business members, their representatives and local residents who are happy to have this opportunity to ‘give back’. This year’s Teaching to Excellence will be held at The Regent on Wednesday, August 8. Approximately 300 new teachers from the Riverview elementary, middle and high schools are invited to the event which is held just before the start of each school year. Additionally, the Principal and the 2017/18 Teacher of the Year from each of the Riverview schools are invited to attend as well. In addition to the hundreds of educators in the room, there will also be dozens of business sponsors hosting Supply Stop tables for attendees. Upon arrival, the teachers are provided a goodie bag from GRCC and then proceed through the pathway of Supply Stops. As well as meeting the representative from each of the businesses, the teachers receive offers and school supplies at each table. According to Tanya Doran, “They will all be treated to a delicious hot breakfast, networking opportunities, Teacher of the Year recognitions and, of course, tables full of terrific door
prizes for the teachers. Each year the teachers leave this event with a big smile on their face and an even bigger bag of supplies on their arm. To many of these teachers this bag means the world to them. For every item in that bag, it is money they did not have to spend out of their own pocket to support the children of our community.” The GRCC is collecting supply donations and raffle prizes now and would greatly appreciate the community’s support of this event. A list of requested supplies include: calculators, notebooks/composition books, pencil and pen packs, highlighters, dry erase markers, packs of crayons/markers, folders, hand sanitizer, flash drives, scissors, rulers, staplers, tissues, pencil cases/pouches, post it notes, clipboards, erasers, organizers, colorful/fancy pens for grading, desk tags, borders or wall decorations for elementary school, Clorox wipes and copy paper. Drop off donations at the Suncoast Credit Union, 10405 Gibsonton Dr. or GRCC office, 10101 Bloomingdale Ave. For more information on the event or sponsorship opportunities, please visit www.RiverviewChamber.com or stop by the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce office located at 10101 Bloomingdale Ave., Ste. 102 inside the CenterState Bank building between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. one of 62 Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) employees who became a certified yoga instructor over the summer thanks to the Breathe for Change program. The program, started by former pre-K teacher Ilana Nankin, offers a teacher-focused intensive yoga training certification with 200 hours of instruction over 16 days. Educators from all over Hillsborough County attended the program’s first Florida training at Dawson Elementary in June. Wiese was instrumental in bringing the program to the area as she found out about Breathe for Change when looking into ways to take care of herself with her busy schedule. “Education is stressful because we are constantly giving of ourselves, which leaves very little time for selfcare,” said Wiese, who took the position as the school’s assistant principal when it opened for the 2018-19 school year. “When I found the Breathe for Change program I was thrilled because I realized it was a way I could help myself and my students at the same time.” The program teaches participants
how to incorporate yoga into their classrooms while also educating on social and emotional learning strategies, anatomy, philosophy, mindful movement for students and meditation. Nankin, the Founder and CEO of Breathe for Change, developed the program after seeing how learning yoga impacted not only her well being but the performance of the students in her classroom. “When I started incorporating yoga into my classroom I found that students made unbelievable advances, socially, emotionally and academically,” said Nankin. “It was then that I realized I wanted to share this with as many teachers as possible.” In addition to certifying 1,700 teachers all over the country this year, Nankin is also in the end stages of developing a Breathe for Change app that will be available at no cost to teachers offering them convenient access to resources, live sessions and developmental workshops, in addition to yoga. Additional training sessions are planned in the Tampa area and Nankin encourages teachers to follow Breathe for Change on Facebook and Instagram in order to keep up with the latest updates. Registered Voters In Hillsborough Have Three Methods To Vote: By Mail, Early And On Election Day...Every Vote Counts
By Kathy L. Collins
In the United States, voting is a right. However, in order to exercise this right, every voter in Hillsborough County must be informed and must know where to vote and how to do it. There are three methods- Vote By Mail, Early Voting and Election Day Voting. In order to vote, you must be registered by July 30 for the Primary, which is set for August 28. You must be registered by October 9 for the General Election which will be held on November 6. When you register, you are asked to select a party. That would be either Republican, Democrat or No Party Affiliation or one of the minor political parties. Florida is a closed primary state. This means that for the Primary Election, your ballot will reflect the party that you have selected. In other words, you vote only for the candidates from your party as well as non-partisan races such as Judge (County and Circuit) and School Board. In the General Election, your ballot is based upon where you reside. You can view sample ballots for both the Primary and the General Election at www.votehillsborough.org. “One of the most important things we can do to conduct a successful election is to make sure that voting is easy and accessible for all voters,” said Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer. VOTE BY MAIL Vote By Mail is the most convenient method. It is often referred to as
By Mail ballot by August 22 for the Primary Election and by October 31 for the General Election. “We pay the return postage on Vote By Mail ballots and have drop-off boxes for those ballots at all of our Early Voting sites and offices, to make that as Supervisor of Election, Craig Latimer (Shown here with easy as possible,” said long time Poll Workers, Linda and Jimmie Wright) wants Latimer. Absentee Voting. However, Floridians no longer need an excuse to choose EARLY VOTING this option. If you request this method, Early Voting is set up before both you will receive your ballot in the mail, the Primary Election and the General and you can take your time making your Election. This year, Early Voting will take voting decision. The Vote By Mail ballot place for the Primary (August 28) from must be received by the Hillsborough August 13 through August 26 from 10 Supervisor of Elections Office by 7 p.m. a.m. to 6 p.m. For the General Election on Election Day. You can mail it or drop (November 6), Early Voting will take it off in person at one of their offices or place from October 22 through at an Early Voting site. Rest assured, if November 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. you choose this method, your vote will In Hillsborough County, there will be be counted. You must request your Vote 19 Early Voting sites open. “For our
2018 elections, we have added three new Early Vote sites. During the Early Voting period, voters can vote at any of the 19 voting sites,” said Latimer. The new sites include the Valrico Recreation Center which was added to ease congestion at the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library. Please visit www.votehillsborough.org for a complete list and the times they are open. Early Voting is just like Election Day Voting. You must bring one or two forms of identification with your photo and signature on it. Acceptable forms of identification include Florida Driver’s License, state issued identification, U.S. Passport, Student ID, Public Assistance ID and more. ELECTION DAY VOTING Polling Places or Precinct, noted on your Voter Registration Card, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. You can bring your sample ballot with you and use it while you vote. Whichever method you choose, remember your vote counts. “On Election Day, voters must vote in the polling place assigned to their precinct. Remember, Election Day is your last chance to vote. Because the majority of voters will have voted during the Early Voting period, we do not expect lines in the Election Day polling places,” said Latimer. However, it is not uncommon that a significant move such as this can create all sorts of issues to grapple with. There’s the loss of a home built and loved, along with most of the things that filled it. Possibly the move coincides with the death of a spouse. Or the move may be related to the sudden onset of an acute illness or accident. The stress that follows a move is called “Relocation Stress Syndrome”(RSS), a serious enough syndrome that in 1992, the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association added it as an official diagnosis. Relocation Stress Syndrome tends to show up in most of those affected right before a significant move and within the first three months of a move. Symptoms may include anxiety, depression and forgetfulness. Physical symptoms can crop up as well.
There are some steps you can take to prevent RSS in a loved one: 1. Involve your family member in the decision to move into a community. Have them tour the community if possible. Keep them informed of exactly what is happening each step along the way. 2. Whenever possible, try to recreate their old home in their new home. Bring photographs, bedding, their favorite recliner to add familiarity and comfort. Take pictures of their bedside table and top of their dresser and recreate it with the same items. 3. Acknowledge their fears, reassuring them that all the answers to their questions and concerns will be addressed. Encourage them to keep an open mind. The move to an assisted living community can effect in a very positive way the overall health and wellbeing of your family member. Having better understanding as to how the transition can affect them can be helpful during the process.

Drinking And Distractions Fuel Teen Driver Crashes
By Matt Nasworthy, AAA Spokesperson, The Auto Club Group
Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for teens in the United States. In 2016 alone, more than 3,500 teens lost their lives in car crashes according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (HTSA). About a quarter of the teen drivers involved in fatal crashes had been drinking and thanks to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, it was learned that almost 60% of teen crashes are caused by distraction. The most common forms of distraction leading to a teen driver crash include: 15% interacting with one or more passengers, 12% using a cell phone, 10% looking at something in the vehicle, 9% looking at something outside the vehicle, 8% singing/dancing to music, 6% grooming and 6% reaching for an object. Parents, educators and teens are encouraged to discuss the dangers of driving impaired and distracted. Here are some tips for parents and guardians responsible for young drivers: Have conversations early and often about the dangers of underage drinking, impaired driving and driving distracted, make a parentteen driving agreement that sets family

rules against these dangerous behaviors, stay engaged as teens learn to drive and monitor their activity to ensure safety and teach by example and put safety first by not participating in these activities yourself. “When we help teens drive safely, everyone on the road wins,” said Amy Stracke, Manager Director of Traffic Safety Advocacy for AAA – the Auto Club Group. TeenDriving.AAA.com has a variety of tools to help prepare parents and teens for the learning-to-drive process. The online AAA StartSmart program also offers great resources for parents on how to become effective in vehicle coaches as well as advice on how to manage their teen’s overall driving privileges. Teens preparing for the responsibility of driving should enroll in a driver education program that teaches how to avoid driver distraction and other safety skills. AAA also offers membership discounts for new teen drivers to help keep them safe on the road in case of an emergency. For teen driving tips, visit TeenDriving.AAA.com.

Huth & Booth Photography Takes Studio In A New DirectionStaff Report As the photographic industry has changed with the advent of the cell phone and digital cameras, Huth & Booth Photography has moved with the times and is taking the studio in a new direction. While Ed Booth and Betty Huth still do the people photography, they have now ventured into the realm of Real Estate Photography, photographing homes for magazines and advertising and for the MLS service used by realtors. They have found this to be a very successful market and photograph about 300 homes per year (about four to ten houses weekly). Realtors have found that the use of professional photographs increase the likelihood of selling the home 80% faster than when using cell phone photos. Consumer’s time is valuable. They use the internet to decide which homes they will see personally and which they eliminate. Realtors know they have to capture them at this beginning stage of their search for a new home. Professional photographs do this. With over 50 years of photographic experience, Huth & Booth have the knowledge and skill to give this industry the finest in architectural photography. They have the proper equipment necessary to be sure the home is displayed in the best light. If a drone is necessary,
Huth & Booth can provide that. Virtual tours are common products with links for both a branded tour as well as an unbranded one for MLS. Mp4 files can be produced for use on YouTube and other sites. The goal is to help the realtor make the sale as quickly as possible. As successful as this new market has become, Huth & Booth still does people photography. Business Portraits are also a significant part of their business model. A good portrait is often the first impression made as a business person. Your portrait helps you put your ‘best face forward.’ Individual and family portraits are still a part of the model, though not as much as in the past. Copy and Restoration of old or damaged photos is a growing segment of the business. Using new technology, they can restore color to images faded by time, repair cracked and torn photos to look like new, and composite images to create images that never existed before. Huth & Booth Photography has been in business in the Brandon Area since 2005 when they moved to the area from the Silicon Valley in California. They have been recognized by both the Greater Riverview Chamber and The Greater Brandon Chamber as Business of the Year. Visit http://hbphoto.com/ or by phone at 447-9909.

Study Abroad Gives A Whole New Meaning To Credits As more students are now attending college, more students are also taking the opportunity to study abroad. I recently had the chance to travel to Italy for four weeks through a study abroad program in my college. During my time in Italy, I got to travel to 11 different cities all while taking a class and earning credit. Study abroad allows students to learn both inside and outside of the classroom. However, I learned more outside the classroom by living in a completely different culture, immersing myself in the history within each city and being able to see worldfamous monuments taught me more than a textbook ever could. I was able to go inside churches that were hundreds of years old, climb to the top of the Florence Cathedral and tour centuries-old cities. Even just being abroad for one month, I gained a lot of independence as I was forced to figure out how to live in another country without the comfort of my parents being with me. The money, language and the me in Ro way of life is all very differteps dei Monti S h ent. the abroad program was my ability to experience places that an average tourist wouldn’t. On a free weekend, my roommates and I took a train to a place called Cinque Terre. It is made up of five towns on the coast that people can hike through or take a train to each town. We hiked some of the trails, took a boat tour and had a beach day. The views were unbelievable and each town had its own unique character. Not many people knew about Cinque Terre, but it made me realize that sometimes it’s the small towns that create the best experiences. If I weren’t on a study abroad trip, I don’t think I would have ever gone to this place and it has now become one of my favorite spots. Overall, studying abroad taught me so much. I am now more self-sufficient. I met new people; learned some Italian and gained a new perspective of the world. The most important thing I learned while abroad is to keep an open mind. The new set of Bridge knowledge I gained is allow fo s throughout over thr people to w Venice priceless and I would a Gondoe canal or wa lk right encourage any student who las ma tc ha around ke their ways has an opportunity like this the city . to take advantage of it.

Commissioner Hosts South County Job Fair By Kate Quesada Employers from all over the Tampa Bay area are heading to SouthShore next month to connect with residents looking for jobs. For the seventh year running, Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandy Murman is hosting the South County Job Fair in association with CareerSource Tampa Bay and Hillsborough Community College (HCC). The fair, which is taking place on Thursday, August 9 from 8:30 a.m.-12 Noon at the HCC SouthShore Campus, is expected to draw approximately 50 employers and around 500 people. “With the challenges that we have been facing in the past few years, the most important thing we can do in County Government is to help our unemployed or under employed citizens to find jobs,” said Murman. The free event was attended by companies including Greenway Health, Bay Care Health System, Convergys, Moasic, TMobile and Tampa General Hospital last year. Hillsborough County Schools and Busch Gardens were also in attendance along with many other business representatives. “Some businesses may interview potential candidates on the spot, while others may provide online links to jobs,” said Jeffrey Huggins, Legislative Aide to Murman.
Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandy Murman is hosting her seventh job fair at Hillsborough Community College’s SouthShore Campus on August 9 from 8:30 a.m.-12 Noon.
Employers in the fields of Information Technology (IT) and Medical occupations are encouraged to participate. All employers with job openings are welcome to register before August 3. Space is limited. According to Huggins, in surveys taken by CareerSource Tampa Bay following her recent job fairs, 90 percent of the employers and vendors who completed the survey rated Commissioner Murman’s Job Fair as excellent or outstanding. “When more people are working, more people are saving and spending money at local businesses and the economy continues to improve,” said Murman. “It is critical that we get people back to work in South Hillsborough County.” For more information or register for the event, visit www.sandymurman.com or contact Angela Lyons with CareerSource Tampa Bay at 930-7836 or lyonsa@careersourcetampabay.com. The event is free and open to the public. HCC SouthShore is located at 551 24th St. N.E. in Ruskin.

River’s Edge Bar And Grill: The Waterfront Jewel Of Gibsonton With Great Food Too River’s Edge Bar and Grill has been a part of the Gibsonton community for more than 20 years. What started out as a little local bar has grown into being ‘The Jewel of Gibsonton’, according to one of the current owners, Robert Cremeams. “The bar isn’t just owned by my husband Robert,” said Lisa Cremeams, “His brothers Randy and Ron are coowners and their girlfriends Paula and Dawn are waitresses as well.” River Edge is family-owned and operated. Robert Cremeams got to know the bar’s former owner Barney Madden because Robert was a regular on Saturdays; but not for a cold beverage. Robert was a regular for River’s Edge’s burgers. “I own the property across the street from the bar and at the time, the bar only had hotdogs and hamburgers on Saturdays and Sundays,” Robert said. “Barney only had about 150 burgers and when they were gone, they were gone, so I would call over to the bar and tell them to put a burger aside for me for lunch.” Robert and Barney’s friendship grew over the years and over the burgers. “Barney wanted to sell the business and he knew I was responsible enough to run it, so I talked with my brothers to see if they would be interested in being business partners,” Robert said, “I told them if we didn’t do it together, then we don’t do it at all.” The brothers thought it was a great idea, so in 2012 the brothers leased River’s Edge from Barney for two years and then finalized the purchase in 2014. Brandon TOPSoccer Offers Program For Children With Disabilities TOPSoccer is a communitybased program for young athletes with disabilities. Any child over the age of 5 with a mental or physical disability is welcome to join and will be able to enjoy a relaxed and fun soccer atmosphere. The TOPSoccer program is organized completely by volunteers. It has been sponsored and hosted by the West Florida Flames Soccer League (WFFSL) since 1998. This sponsorship, along with the sponsorship of various individuals has allowed the program to be offered with no cost to the families of the athletes. Fred Englehardt was on the Board of Directors of Brandon Youth Soccer League, but was recruited by the founding members of TOPSoccer to help them get uniforms, shin guards and balls for the athletes. “It has been over 20 years now, and I love every minute of it,” he said. A large range of mental and physical disabilities can be accommodated. Each program is specially designed for the athletes in the program. Instead of being sorted into teams by age, children are sorted based on disability, so that each team can work together and have fun. In order to keep the program light and fun, TOPSoccer does not keep score or keep track of team standings. Teams usually hold practices once a week, and the season lasts from mid-September to

mid-November. All of these policies are TOPSoccer’s way of trying to stick to their original mission statement: “to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition.” The Brandon TOPSoccer program was recognized as both the 2010 and 2015 ‘TOPSoccer Program of the Year’ by the Florida Youth Soccer Association, awards which the administration was very proud to have received. Registration for the upcoming season will be every Friday and Saturday of August, beginning August 10. On Fridays it will take place from 6-7:30 p.m., and on Saturdays it will be from 9-11 a.m. Registration will take place at the WFFSL clubs located at 3104 S Kings Ave. in Brandon. All players will be required to show a copy of their IEP form when registering. Keep Pets Vaccinated After Rabies Reports
Father/Son Team At Preservation 1st Financial Helps Families Save & Navigate For Future
You may have heard about Rabies cases in the news recently. There have been six confirmed cases of rabid animals in Hillsborough County in the past six months alone. At least 13 people and three dogs have been exposed to these animals making them at risk for contracting the disease. Rabies is a deadly virus spread to people from the saliva of infected mammals. The rabies virus is commonly transmitted through a bite. Animals most likely to transmit rabies in our area include bats, cats, foxes, raccoons and skunks. Once a person begins showing signs and symptoms of rabies, the disease is nearly always fatal. Seek immediate medical care if you're bitten by any animal or exposed to an animal suspected of having rabies. Based on your injuries and the situation in which the exposure occurred, you and your doctor can decide whether you should receive treatment to prevent rabies. Even if you aren't sure whether you've been bitten, seek medical attention. For instance, a bat that flies into your room while you're sleeping may bite you without waking you. If you awake to find a bat in your room, assume you've been bitten. Also, if you find a bat near a person who can't report a bite, such as a small child or a person with a disability, assume that person has been bitten. Steps you can take to reduce your risk of coming in contact with rabid animals: -Vaccinate your pets. Cats, dogs and

By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH ferrets can be vaccinated against rabies. Pets are vaccinated by your veterinarian to prevent them from acquiring diseases such as Rabies from wildlife and thereby preventing transmittion to humans. Ask your veterinarian how often your pets should be vaccinated. -Keep your pets inside and supervise them when outside. Never let you pets run loose unless in a confined area such as a fenced in yard and under supervision. This will help keep your pets from coming in contact with wild animals. Spay or neuter your pets to help reduce the number of unwanted pets that may not be properly cared for or vaccinated regularly. -Report stray animals to local authorities. Call your local animal control officials or other local law enforcement to report stray dogs and cats. -Don't approach wild animals. Wild animals with rabies may seem unafraid of people. It's not normal for a wild animal to be friendly with people, so stay away from any animal that seems unafraid. -Keep bats out of your home. Seal any cracks and gaps where bats can enter your home. If you know you have bats in your home, work with local experts to find ways to keep them out of your home. Faces Of Courage Has A Simple Motto: Cancer Is Serious, Camp Is Serious Fun
By Kathy L. Collins
Faces of Courage provides an assortment of free life enriching programs for children and families touched by all types of cancer and blood disorders.
Faces of Courage is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides day outings and overnight camps for women, children and families touched by all types of cancer and blood disorders. All programs are given free of charge. Faces of Courage was founded by Peggy Sherry in 2004. It is a Tampa based nonprofit, but it serves cancer survivors from all over the country. Faces of Courage is able to provide services for free thanks to tireless volunteers and support from the community. Volunteers such as Larry Brooks provide essential services. Brooks, who lives in Sun City Center, became involved with Faces of Courage about eight years ago. He works in the kitchen at every camp that is held. Brooks said, "I volunteer because I see what the camp means to the survivors who attend. At one of the camps, a
woman with cancer gave me a hug and thanked me for being there." Brooks added, "While the emphasis at the camps is certainly on fun, it also provides support and focuses on developing a strong positive attitude towards recovery and good health management. Many of the volunteers are survivors as well, and when they tell a camper they know what they are going through, they really do know." Sherry said, "No one can understand the cancer journey until they have heard the words 'You have cancer.' When these survivors can get together, leave their wigs in the cabin and openly talk about their feelings, worries and hopes, it is very healing." Faces of Courage has several upcoming camps for women and children. It is hosting two Adult Women's Camps on August 17-19 and September 14-16. It will host Santa's Workshop Weekend for children ages 2-12 the weekend of November 30 to December 2. Registration for camps opens approximately five weeks before camp. Camps cost approximately $250 per camper. To offset the cost of the camps, Faces of Courage holds events such as ‘It's Too Hot Music Fest’ on Sunday, July 15 and a Top Golf event on Sunday, July 22. For information, visit www.facesofcourage.org or call 948-7478.

Sprint Car Driver Billy Boyd Back Behind Wheel After Race Against Cancer Sprint car racer Billy Boyd found himself in the race of his life against cancer. He crossed the finish line, winning the checkered flag. He won his race. Boyd is in remission after battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia for the last four years. After winning two consecutive sprint car championships in 2013 and 2014, he had to start chemotherapy when he found out that he had cancer. After Photos courtesy of Mike Horne two years of treatment at Moffitt “Win this Race” has been Billy and Mary’s motto for Cancer Center, he wasn’t cured. He beating cancer. later got a bone marrow transplant from his brother, Adam Boyd, which helped tremendously. His family was by his side the entire time he was sick, especially his wife of 28 years, Mary Boyd, who is Billy’s biggest supporter. “He had many long days and nights he didn’t think he was going to make it to the next, but we all continued to Billy races with his #4 car. encourage him to stay positive and prayed every day for a new day to miracle we needed. transplant, and no signs of leukemia.” The Boyd family is very thankful to the Riverview community for their support through this process. “Simple things to some meant a lot to us, from bringing us food, to mowing our yard, to checking on my children, to sitting with us for hours at the hospital to keep us company,” said Mary. Kelly Coates, Billy’s barber at Sports Clips, and her family put on a fundraiser for the Boyds before Christmas to help
with their finances. She gathered local businesses and friends to have a car show with local racers at the race track to come out and help raise money for the family while Billy was going through the transplant. “Billy and I were both raised in this community, and we are very happy and blessed to have a community as wonderful as they are that help those who are in need.” Billy is also thankful to his friend Rick Amans, who is part owner of the car that Billy races. Amans had a battle with cancer as well, which made Billy relate to him even more. “He never gave up on me, even when I was in the hospital, he always knew that I was going to get back out and drive,” said Boyd. On May 5 at East Bay Raceway Park, he finally won a Sprint Car Race to complete his comeback. “Considering where I was a couple of years ago when I had to learn how to walk again, it means quite a bit just to be with my family and to be able to do what I have done most of my life and get back on the racetrack,” said Boyd.
