Nearly two years in the making, local nonprofit Joshuacord, in collaboration with In Altum Productions, will release its documentary film Christians in the Mirror this August. The film is a call to action for Christians to look in the mirror and ask, “What am I doing to support my persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ?” Local residents flocked to FishHawk The 50-minute Fellowship on July 14 to take part as extras in the documentary Christians in the Mirror. expository documentary compares and Iraq, Syria, South contrasts the persecuted Church with the Sudan and India. We are going to make that information available on our website as well as specific organizations helping in those areas.” With 350,000 churches throughout the United States, Carberry explained their purpose for the documentary, “The goal and vision is to get the film to them [the 350,000 churches], so they will show it to their church, their youth groups and organizations." Heroic Women Of The Bible Rebekah – Making Difficult Decisions The story Rebekah begins in Genesis 24 with Abraham requesting his oldest servant to find a wife for his son: “You shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” Many people look upon the story of Rebekah as an account of deceit and trickery. However, there is another side to the story of Rebekah. When Abraham’s servant arrived in Mesopotamia, he prayed to God. Before he finished his prayer, Rebekah had arrived at the water well. When Abraham's servant asked her for a drink, she gave him a drink and also offered water to his camels. The servant interpreted Rebekah's act of kindness as a sign from God and the answer to his prayer. He believed God had directed him to Isaac's future wife. After providing the servant and camels with water, Rebekah assured him that there was enough room in her parent's house to accommodate him and his camels for the night. Her willingness and kind heart toward helping a stranger in need exposed the godliness in Rebekah, and the love of God led her to His will. The next morning the servant of Abraham wanted to leave with Rebekah. Not many women would be willing to leave their family, friends and country to marry a man they had never met and reside in a foreign land. It would take an exceptional woman—one who had faith in God. When she arrived and met Isaac, he immediately loved her, and they were married. Isaac and Rebekah were happily married for many years, yet Rebekah was unable to have children. She was

confused because God had told her that she would be the mother of thousands of ten thousands. Isaac prayed to God for children. God heard his prayer, and Rebekah became pregnant. The Bible says that Isaac was 60 years old when Rebekah became pregnant with twin boys—meaning she was nearly 40 years old. During her pregnancy, she felt a struggle within her womb and was concerned about it. God told her, “Two nations are in your womb, two peoples shall be separated from your body; one people shall be stronger than the other, and the older shall serve the younger." This was a straightforward answer from God, and it influenced the course of her life. Isaac and Rebekah’s sons were Esau and Jacob. As the boys grew, the differences between the two became apparent. Esau was a skillful hunter and became his father’s favorite. Jacob was a quiet intellectual and became his mother's favorite. This was the cause of many problems in the family. Then more trouble arose when Esau married two Canaanite women. Isaac and Rebekah did not want Canaanite wives for their sons because they believed in different gods. When Isaac became old and near death, he wanted to transfer his blessing and inheritance to Esau. Rebekah remembered that God had told her that the elder would serve the younger. So, instead of praying for God’s intervention, she devised a plan to deceive her husband so that Jacob would receive his father’s blessing. Rebekah’s marriage to Isaac was the result of God’s wisdom. Her pregnancy was an answer to prayer and the lives of her sons fulfilled God’s prophecy. Rebekah’s choice to lie and deceive her husband is an example of how wrongdoings by Christians will not hinder God’s plans and how His will prevails despite our sin.

Live Like You Mean It Teaching the faith at “Camp Grandparent” By Kelly Wise Valdes

Old Ship Church, Hingham, MA

Few public buildings from the original American colonies have survived since the seventeenth century. One such building is the Old Ship Church located in Hingham, Massachusetts. The rich history of Old Ship Church dates back to 1681 when it was erected as a place to worship on Sundays as well as a meeting house where civic issues of the time could be discussed and examined. The site was home to many animated debates over the Revolution, discussions about politics and decisions on local issues like property taxes. The structure is reflective of the true Elizabethan Gothic style that was common to the settlers of the area. The roof's curved beams were hand cut by ax, making no two alike. The naming of the Old Ship Church is not documented, but it's widely believed it is due to the unusual roof structure that resembles a ship's hull. The frame and walls of the church are original. The side galleries of the church were added in 1730 and 1755. The original seats were backless wooden benches that were later replaced with pews. During the Victorian era, the interi-

or was renovated to include drapes and wallpaper, and the pews were replaced with new ornamental curved-back pews. However, in 1930, Old Ship was restored to its original characteristics from 1681 and remains that way to this date. Many of the features in the sanctuary date back to the original construction including a small, wooden hourglass located near the pulpit. The hourglass was used to ensure that sermons did not become too long; it continues this function every Sunday. For over 300 years, Old Ship has stood the test of time. In 2014, the building underwent a restoration to ensure its longevity for future generations to enjoy. The Old Ship is the oldest church structure in the United States that has been used continuously for public worship. The Old Ship was featured on the History Channel, which documented the amazing architecture that showcases the historical landmark. For more information, visit www.oldshipchurch.org.

Local Movie The Favorite Tackles Sibling Rivalry And Opens September 7

By Marie Gilmore

An inspired by true events movie that was shot locally, based on a true story and starring John Schneider of Dukes of Hazzard fame will open in select theaters on Friday, September 7 and has a special message to share. The story is inspired by true events based on a car accident from local resident Luke Bernard, who nearly died from a traumatic brain injury from a car accident in Los Angeles. After much prayer from his parents, Luke amazed his surgeons and therapists by going home in less than two months. During his recovery, he was inspired to write a screenplay about two brothers each seeking to be their father’s favorite son. The story is of one distanced and agitated son, hurt by what he perceives as favoritism given to his younger brother, who vents his anger through Mixed Martial Arts fighting. MMA is brought to life with UFC’s Welterweight Champion, Tyron Woodley and Fighter Uriah Hall, as supporting roles in the movie. The dad and lead in The Favorite is John Schneider who we remember as the star of the legendary hit show, Dukes of Hazard. Schneider was delighted to have been part of making someone else’s dream come true.

Executive Producer and father of Luke, Daniel Bernard, founder of Somebody Cares Tampa Bay shared, “We believe that Luke’s recovery and the film inspired by his experience can bring great hope to many by demonstrating the power of faith and prayer. Our passion and dedication in completing this project on a modest budget of one million dollars far exceeded our expectations.” The movie was shot in Pinellas County and features the City of St. Petersburg and City of Oldsmar Fire departments. Screenplay was published by Evergreen Press and the movie was nominated for Best Screenplay at the International Christian Film Festival. Bernard said, “When we got to the hospital his injuries were even worse than we had imagined. We believe that his recovery and the film based upon his experience can bring great hope to many by demonstrating the power of faith and prayer.” To interview the author, email info@thefavoritemovie.com or contact Daniel Bernard at 727-4214132. Life sometimes brings trials and tribulations as one strives to overcome obstacles that might come their way. A new group at Campo Family YMCA called Uplift Women’s Network empowers women by building them up spiritually and fostering a sense of community with the understanding that an issue does not have to be faced alone. In November 2017, Heather Simpson, J.D. founded Uplift Women’s Network and leads it. This faith-based organization came into fruition because the Lord placed it on Simpson’s heart. It consists of more than 20 diverse women of all ages, cultures and denominations. The intent of it is to bring women together through prayer, encouragement and friendship. Simpson shared how she feels in regards to being the leader of it. “I feel inspired by everyone who contributes as they build each other up in a positive and effective way,” Simpson said. The goal of this group is to see God lifted up in the women. To add, Simpson wants to see people grow in their faith and let them know they do not have to

Michael W. Smith To Host Free Concert

Trinity Broadcast Network announced it will partner with three-time GRAMMY® Award-winning recording artist, Michael W. Smith, to present a free concert and worship event at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. The concert will take place on Thursday, August 30 at 7 p.m. ‘Surrounded: A Night to Pray, Worship and Be Awakened’ is free to the public and will begin with a time of prayer led by local pastors for the city of Nashville and surrounding communities. Following a time of prayer, Smith and his band will lead a worship service. Smith hopes that this event crosses all denominational, ethnic, racial and generational lines for a real night of unity. "The growth and energy happening in our city is not just material, but profoundly spiritual," said Smith. "My hope is that individuals, families and even whole congregations will attend 'Surrounded' for a night we'll never forget." Filmmaker Morgan Neville said he’s screened the documentary now for “every possible kind of audience.” Neville had hoped to make a film that would find common ground, but Won’t You Be My Neighbor has “exceeded any expectation,” he said. “It took on a life of its own.” Perhaps the success of a documentary about a slow-paced children’s show hosted by a kind, soft-spoken Presbyterian minister shouldn’t be a surprise. After all, the success of the children’s show was itself a surprise and its host, an unlikely celebrity. So unassuming was Fred Rogers that is it surprising to see how strong his faith comes out in the film. Neville declined to comment on his own faith, but he said he believed messages like Rogers’ “do make a difference and hopefully change how people think. That’s why we need Fred Rogers.” For more information, visit www.mrrogersmovie.com

Local Veteran Gets Roof Repair Thanks To Local Company And National Program

By Stacy Huisman

Cardinal Roofing shows its gratitude for military veteran Thomas Boone for his service by repairing his leaky roof.

Riverview resident, Thomas Boone, had a leaky roof. In the past, he would have grabbed his ladder, climbed to the roof and fixed it himself. But as a 91 year-old Korean War Veteran, climbing a ladder to fix a leak didn’t seem like the easiest of tasks. According to friends and family, Boone is not one who likes to ask for help. That is when neighbors and family of Boone decided to reach out to Homes For Heroes (HOH). HOH is national program designed to save military, first responders, medical professionals and educators money when buying or selling their home. They also donate proceeds to local heroes in need. Dan Ruszowski, a sales consultant for Cardinal Roofing was contacted by HOH to see if they could offer assistance to the local war veteran. After hearing his story, Ruszowski met with Boone,

assessed his roof and assured him that Cardinal Roofing was able to repair the minor leak. Cardinal Roofing is a proud supporter of other local veteran programs such as Honor Flight in Tampa and Flight of Honor in Lakeland. But according to owner Roger Jenkins and his daughter Bridget Wilson, this request was something they wanted to consider. “Dan was really the guy who made this happened, he was the one willing to do the work. He has a big heart for this, the credit goes to him,” said Wilson. Ruszowski met Boone outside of his home, shook his hand and Cardinal Roofing went to work, fixed the leak just in time for the next summer storm. No need for the spry 91-year old to climb any ladders. “That generation doesn’t like to ask for help, but I’m sure glad I was able to,” said Ruszowski. True Stories As Told By Christian Music Artists

By Kelly Wise Valdes

The real-life experiences of Christian music artists are often expressed through their music. Just like many of us, these performers have endured pain, loss and tragedies as well as joy and healing. As we sing along with their songs, sometimes it’s easy to lose sight of the meaning behind the lyrics. Many Christian singers have also written autobiographies to share their stories with us--the audience. The struggle and triumphs can influence each of us differently, and for these artists, they have found their way through the art of song. Here are some fan-favorite autobiographies from Christian singers and musicians.

ping the music charts for decades with songs that reflect his personal journey and faith in Christ. In his book, Chapman shares fascinating details from his life and childhood as well as his marriage and family. Curtis also shares his grief after the accidental death of their 5-year-old daughter and wondered if he'd ever been able to sing again. But even in the midst of struggle, he chose to have hope, trusting in God. Readers will be challenged and inspired by this powerful testimony of a life lived with faith.

When Grammy® -nominated songwriter and farmer Rory Feek started a blog about life with his wife and music partner, Joey, and their children, he never imagined he'd be chronicling their final months together as she battled a fast-moving cancer. Readers will be moved by his story of love, loss and God's faithfulness throughout the long goodbye. Together they helped each other discover purpose through music, faith and family.

Hope in Front of Me: Find Purpose in Your Darkest Moments By: Danny Gokey

In the wake of his young wife's death, Gokey rose to fame as the third-place American Idol finalist. In the midst of this excitement, he was shadowed by the pain of his loss. But, God met him just where he was, and Gokey found hope in healing. In his book, Gokey shares his reflections on his childhood, his wife’s death, his experience with the American Idol competition and his new life as an advocate for the disadvantaged.

Unashamed By: Lecrae

Grammy® and Dove award-winning rap artist Lecrae has faced his share of hard-knocks on the road to healing and wholeness in Christ. A childhood survivor of abuse, he struggled throughout his young adulthood with drug use, alcoholism and suicidal feelings. He became a Christian and was transformed by God's love and forgiveness, which Lecrae now shares openly in his music. Unashamed is a remarkable testimony of God's boundless love and the power of God to change lives.

Registered Voters In Hillsborough Have Three Methods To Vote: By Mail, Early And On Election Day...Every Vote Counts In the United States, voting is a right. However, in order to exercise this right, every voter in Hillsborough County must be informed and must know where to vote and how to do it. There are three methods- Vote By Mail, Early Voting and Election Day Voting. In order to vote, you must be registered by July 30 for the Primary, which is set for August 28. You must be registered by October 9 for the General Election which will be held on November 6. When you register, you are asked to select a party. That would be either Republican, Democrat or No Party Affiliation or one of the minor political parties. Florida is a closed primary state. This means that for the Primary Election, your ballot will reflect the party that you have selected. In other words, you vote only for the candidates from your party as well as non-partisan races such as Judge (County and Circuit) and School Board.

In the General Election, your ballot is based upon where you reside. You can view sample ballots for both the Primary and the General Election at www.votehillsborough.org. “One of the most important things we can do to conduct a successful election is to make sure that voting is easy and accessible for all voters,” said Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer.

VOTE BY MAIL Vote By Mail is the most convenient method. It is often referred to as Absentee Voting. However, Floridians no Requesting A Vote By Mail Ballot Is longer need an Easy: excuse to choose 1. Online: Vote By Mail Ballot Request this option. If you 2. you choose this method, your vote will be counted. You must request your Vote By Mail ballot by August 22 for the

Primary Election and by October 31 for the General Election. “We pay the return postage on Vote By Mail ballots and have drop-off boxes for those ballots at all of our Early Voting sites and offices, to make that as easy as possible,” said Latimer. If you choose this method, please visit www.votehillsborough.org for instructions. EARLY VOTING Early Voting is set up before both the Primary Election and the General Election. This year, Early Voting will take place for the Primary (August 28) from August 13 through August 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For the General Election (November 6), Early Voting will take place from October 22 through November 4 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In Hillsborough County, there will be 19 Early Voting sites open. “For our 2018 elections, we have added

three new Early Vote sites. During the Early Voting period, voters can vote at any of the 19 voting sites,” said Latimer. The new sites include the Valrico Recreation Center which was added to ease congestion at the Bloomingdale Regional Public Library. Please visit www.votehillsborough.org for a complete list and the times they are open. Early Voting is just like Election Day Voting. You must bring one or two forms of identification with your photo and signature on it. Acceptable forms of identification include Florida Driver’s License, state issued identification, U.S. Passport, Student ID, Public Assistance ID and more. ELECTION DAY VOTING Polling Places or Precinct, noted on your Voter Registration Card, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. You can bring your sample ballot with you and use it while you vote. Whichever method you choose, remember your vote counts. “On Election Day, voters must vote in the polling place assigned to their precinct. Remember, Election Day is your last chance to vote. Because the majority of voters will have voted during the Early Voting period, we do not expect lines in the Election Day polling places,” said Latimer.
