Family Honored As Saladino Dog Park Opens On Bryan Rd. In Brandon

By Kate Quesada

Park also offers a walking trail, basketball courts, picnic shelters, a playground and rest rooms. “We are thrilled to have this park named after my parents,” said Tony Saladino III at the ribbon cutting.

County representatives joined members of the Saladino family to officially open a dog park addition to the Bertha and Tony Saladino Park in Brandon last month.

Brandon residents and their four legged canine friends now have a new place to visit. Hillsborough County held a ribbon cutting earlier this month for a dog park extension to the Bertha and Tony Saladino Park on Bryan Rd. in Brandon. The dog portion of the park, which was originally dedicated to the Saladino family in 1992, is made up of two areas with 1.8 acres for large dogs and just less than an acre for small dogs. “Both areas are fenced, providing enclosed havens where canines of all sizes can get fresh air, exercise and interact with other dogs,” said Hillsborough County Media Specialist Todd Pratt. According to Pratt, each park includes a large grassed area for dogs to run as well as shaded seating, water fountains for humans and dogs, and canine agility and play equipment. County Commissioner Stacy White brought his own dog to the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new portion of the park earlier this month. “A dog park was one thing that my constituents had been telling me they wanted for a long time, one of the few things our area was lacking,” said White. “This is now a great place for families to come. It is great to see the dogs play, but it also lends itself to interaction with twolegged owners.” The larger Bertha and Tony Saladino

“Over the years it has been a wonderful place for the community to enjoy.” Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation now operates seven dog parks throughout the area. For more information on the park, which is located at 1705 Bryan Rd. in Brandon, visit www.hcflgov.net.

Brandon Group Wins $10,000 Donation To Help Children Learn Through Music

By Kate Quesada

A Brandon area nonprofit charity believes that learning music gives children a head start in life and thanks to a recent donation from a Tampa company, they can now bring their gift to more students than ever. Insurance and Trust (IAT) earned a 2018 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award for volunteer work bringing music to disadvantaged children with Instruments of Change, a public 501(c)3 based in Brandon. The award included a $5,000 donation to the charity from Safeco Insurance, which was doubled to $10,000 thanks to an active social media

The group was chosen for the award based on a photo application. A total of 24 independent agents will be chosen throughout 2018 to receive The Safeco Make More Happen Awards which focus on the area of health and safety, education and civil service. “We are excited to share the inspiring stories of our agents with their comBrandon-based charity Instruments for Change recently received a $10,000 donation from Safeco Insurance to provide music to students in fifth grade.

campaign. “Students who learn to play musical instruments generally score higher on academic tests and are less likely to engage in self-destructive behaviors,” said the group’s media representative, Calvin Jordan. “Instruments of Change works to bring band programs to elementary school students in an effort to positively influence their personal development.” According to Jordan, Instruments of

Change currently serves five elementary schools in Hillsborough County by providing musical instruments and instruction to

students. “Fifth graders at participating schools must sign a contract which obligates them to care for the instrument they are given, practice in preparation for performances and be held accountable to other students in the section,” said Jordan. “Upon successful completion of the contract and verified enrollment in a middle school band program, they receive their instrument for middle school.”

Sunrise Homes Celebrates 35 Years Volunteers & Sponsors Needed For Of Local Quality Building Annual Cards For Troops By Michelle Caceres

Sunrise Homes designed and constructed its first home in 1983. From these humble beginnings it has created a solid reputation as a semi-custom homebuilder adept at listening to the needs and wants of today’s intelligent homebuyers. With more than 3,500 homes built in Eastern Hillsborough County to date, its success comes from the ability to adapt to the ever-evolving needs of discriminating local buyers. Executive Vice President Bob Appleyard said the company does not follow national trends, choosing instead to focus on what’s important to the local homebuyer. “What is trending in California or Texas might not be what is trending in Hillsborough County, Florida,” he said. Still popular is the open concept layout with large communal spaces, but adults are now seeking private spaces where they can capture a moment of sanctuary. “Adults are finding that important so we have listened and built zones where they can find quiet and privacy,” he said. “Our homes are all about livability for everyone in the family.” When the company sees an opportunity to flex its creative muscles, it doesn’t hesitate to show homebuyers what is possible.

In Canterbury Oaks it decided that no two elevations would be the same, requiring a substantial amount of customization and creativity from its design team. In Lake Toscana, a Tuscan-inspired community in south Riverview, its executive homes will be constructed on one half and one-acre lots, all with conservation or water views. Hickory Breeze, located at the intersection of Boyette and Rhodine Rds., and within the FishHawk school boundaries, features 24, 80’ wide estate lots. Although its one constant has been serving the single-family luxury homebuyer, Sunrise Homes is versatile in its output. From Bridgewater Landing, an active lifestyle community off Bloomingdale Ave. for the 55+ crowd to a new townhome community located across from Riverview High School slated to open in 2019, Sunrise Homes develops communities with a fierce commitment to building excellence. Sunrise Homes’ community model homes are open Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Sunday through Monday noon – 6 p.m. For more information about Sunrise Homes visit www.sunrisehomescorp.com or call 651-3001.

Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays- SEPTEMBER 2018

Cheese Pizza * Teddy Bear * Fortune Cookie * Mini Golf * Comic Book Days Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesser-known holidays throughout the year. September brings many things – cooler weather (hopefully), back-toschool routines and babies. Babies? Yes, babies! While some sources state that August is the month with the most births, in fact, September wins this award. According to national data, September 9 -September 20 contains nine of the top 10 birthdays in America. With this being said, it’s only appropriate to celebrate Labor Day, observed every year on the first Monday in September. If you are looking for other random September trivia to impress your friends, September is the only month with the same number of letters in its name as the number of the month: it is the ninth month and has nine letters. If you are looking for random ways to celebrate this month, look no further! Not to sound too cheesy, but let’s start our celebration with National Cheese Pizza day on Wednesday, September 5. Did you know that Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second? Whether you prefer thin crust, deep dish, or stuffed crust, this is the day for Cheese pizza lovers to unite.

In the 1800s, the Italians considered pizza to be a meal eaten only by peasants. But, when a famous Baker created a margarita pizza for visiting royalty, they were impressed by the colors of the Italian flag represented by the pizza's white mozzarella cheese, red tomato sauce and green basil. Pizza became popular overnight. Today, pizza is one of the most loved meals in the U.S. and there are

hundreds of different pizzas and toppings, but it all started with the classic cheese pizza. So, if you want to get a ‘pizza-the-action’, maybe consider a trip to one of the many local pizza restaurants in our community, including Rosati’s located at 3437 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Valrico. No matter how you slice it, this day can’t be topped! If you need a cuddle, then National Teddy Bear day on Sunday, September 9 is the day for you. Teddy Bear Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our most loyal childhood companions. The origin of this day dates back to the early 1900s and its history is connected to an American president. In November 1902, President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt attended a bear hunt. During the hunt, Roosevelt saw a young bear cub, but when news spread that Roosevelt refused to kill the bear, the story

became famous and toy makers were inspired to create the first “Teddy’s Bear." By 1906, the teddy bear enthusiasm spread across the nation. It’s ‘un-bearable’ to think of a child without a faithful teddy bear companion. Consider honoring this American childhood tradition by donating to www.Safetybears4kids.com. Safety Bears 4 Kids is a faith-based compassion mission bringing comfort to abused and neglected children in Hillsborough County by the gift of a handmade teddy bear. If you’re not sure what your future holds in the month of September, you should perhaps consult the nearest fortune cookie. National Fortune Cookie Day is celebrated on Thursday, September 13 and is the perfect excuse to order some kung-pao chicken and pork fried rice. Traditionally, Chinese meals come with fortune cookies - a fun and motivating dessert that has become an essential ending to Chinese dinners nationwide. Maybe you will be encouraged by such things as “A closed mouth gathers no feet” or “If you are afraid to shake the dice, you will never throw a six.” Regardless, you should grab your closest phone and place your order! Although there are no shortages of Chinese restaurants, you may want to consider Hot Wok located at 1240 Kingsway Rd. in Brandon for this special day. If you’re fortune cookie advised you that you would be enjoying a round of miniature golf in your near future, then your wish has come true! Miniature Golf Day is recognized on Friday, September 21 and is the perfect way to spend quality time with friends and family. Did you know that miniature golf has been around since the 1800s? By the early 20th century, miniature golf courses gained popularity in America. So, even if you’re not feeling up to par, stop puttering around and grab the whole family ‘fore’ some hole-in-one action at Ace Golf Range located at 820 S.

Kings Ave. in Brandon. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s National Comic Book Day, being honored by comic book lovers everywhere on Tuesday, September 25. The holiday celebrates one of America’s most famous literary icons —the comic book. These publications

originated in the U.S. in the 1930s. Today, comic books are traded and collected; in fact, whole conventions are attributed to this genre. Did you know that comic books are the most widely consumed forms of media in the 21st century? In 2017, comic books experienced the highest retail sale numbers in 15 years, with 8.5 million copies of the top 300 comic books sold. In addition, these books have inspired countless movies that have brought our superheroes to life. So grab your cape, your imagination and your favorite comic book and honor this special day. If you need to find a new comic book to read, jump in the Bat-Mobile and head over to Read More Comics located at 115 E Brandon Blvd A., in Brandon. September boasts many other fun holidays including, National Salami Day, Make Your Bed Day, National Peanut Day and Elephant Appreciation

Day, just to name a few. For a complete list, visit www.holidayinsights.com.

C.A.T.E. Foundation Announces Family Fun & Community Day Looking for something enjoyable to do with the entire family, but don’t want to be outside during the dog days of summer? The C.A.T.E. Foundation is excited to announce its first annual Family Fun and Community Day at E.G. Simmons Park on October 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. Just in time for fall in Florida! This event offers something for the entire family with free activities for children. Kids will spend hours as they jump through bouncy houses, have their faces painted, and hurl water balloons at each other. When ready for a rest, they can ask for a balloon animal from a friendly clown or watch a magic show. When the family gets hungry, you can select from one of twenty-five vendors to please even the picky palettes. Cash or card is accepted at most vendors. C.A.T.E. is also sponsoring a Chili Cook-Off during the event from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.. Aspiring chefs can enter for a $25 fee with prizes and trophies for the top recipes. Chili connoisseurs can sample a bowl for only $5. C.A.T.E. Co-founder, Tina Patch, urges the entire community to check it out: “We’re excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We plan to do this event every October.” C.A.T.E. stands for Conquering Addiction Through Education. The C.A.T.E. Foundation is dedicated to helping adults who struggle with addiction and

their families. They seek to reestablish lives through education. Proceeds from the Family Fun and Community Day will benefit programs that give back directly to the community. Patch continues, “It takes a community to come forward and acknowledge some of these tough issues.” Besides support groups for drug, alcohol, or gambling abuse, C.A.T.E. offers free yoga classes to promote healthy living and is poised to offer support classes for people suffering from food addictions. C.A.T.E. is still seeking vendors and business sponsors. All sponsors will be given a tent at the event to hand out advertising and a permanent place on the foundation’s website under patrons. For more information on the Chili Cook-Off, how to become a vendor or sponsor, or more detailed information, contact Tina Patch or Sharon Lafelice at 773-7175 or 331-5246. LET’S TALK SENIOR LIVING Communication Strategies

Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia's gradually diminish a person’s ability to communicate. Communication with a person with dementia requires patience, understanding, and good listening skills. Changes in the ability to communicate can vary, and are based on the person and where he or she is in the disease process. Problems you can expect to see throughout the progression of the disease include: difficulty finding the right words, using familiar words frequently, easily losing a train of thought, difficulty organizing words logically, or speaking less often. Understanding how to connect and communicate effectively with our loved ones experiencing dementia is very important, and can add quality to the relationship. Some helpful tips include: • Avoid distractions. This allows your loved one to focus all their mental energy on the conversation.

• Speak clearly and naturally in a warm and calm voice. Refrain from “talking down” to someone with dementia, or any other type of condescension. • Talk about one thing at a time. This will facilitate understanding. • Listen actively. If you don’t understand something your loved one is telling you, politely let them know. • Have patience. Someone with dementia needs extra time to process what you say. If you ask a question, allow time to respond. • Understand that there will good days and bad. While the general trend of dementia is a downward decline, those with dementia will have ups and downs just like anyone else. Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia's effects the ability to communicate. Meeting that challenge with effective strategies can improve the quality of life for everyone.

Bloomingdale Sq. Redevelopment Underway, Publix Move & LA Fitness Confirmed By Sharon Still

Redevelopment is set to kick off in September at Bloomingdale Square, located on the southwest corner of Bloomingdale Ave. and Bell Shoals Rd. Phase One, according to leasing agent Marc Elias, will consist of repurposing the old Wal-Mart space as well as constructing a 15,000 sq. ft. strip center on an outparcel adjacent to Bloomingdale Ave. The long vacant Wal-Mart space will be home to a 48,000 sq. ft. Publix and Home Centric, a home goods store owned By Beall’s that will occupy 15,000 sq. ft. The existing Publix will keep its doors open until the day the new Publix opens. “There will be no down time for Publix,” reported Elias. LA Fitness will eventually take residence in the vacated Publix location, Elias said that they continue to add tenants to the inline space and more new additions will be coming soon. “We are committed to delivering a valuable, Class A asset that is comple-

mentary to the neighborhood,” he said. Construction on the new, 15,000 sq. ft. strip center also is set to begin in September. Located along the entrance roadway closest to McDonald’s, the center will house a First Watch restaurant with a patio, GNC, Banfield Pet Hospital and Chicken Salad Chick. “We have two others close to signing and that will complete the out parcel,” Elias commented. He explained that construction on space previously occupied by Walmart as well as the strip center should be complete in May or June of 2019 and then turned over to the tenants with an anticipated September or October 2019 opening for the stores. Space available ranges from 12036538 sq. ft. and includes a 6200 sq. ft. restaurant with a patio. “We have been waiting to hear what would be taking Walmart’s place,” said Bloomingdale resident Tony D’Ambrosio. “We were hoping for an ALDI and could use some new restaurants.” “We are hoping to fill the spaces with businesses that the neighbors want,” said Elias. For leasing information, contact Elias at 813-664-4823 or visit www.regencycenters.com.

Bloomingdale Rajun’ Bull Band Marches Towards Performances Abroad Even before the new school year was underway, the band room and music hallway of Bloomingdale High School buzzed with activity as the band’s students, parent volunteers and Director prepared for the new marching band season. The percussion section and Crimson Guard practiced, students were fitted for uniforms, and student leaders hosted the incoming freshmen at band camp. All were getting ready for the new school year and the excitement of preparing for this year’s halftime show featuring the music of The Incredibles 2. The Rajun’ Bulls will be looking to extend their 31-year streak of ‘Superior’ ratings at their district Marching Music Performance Assessment. This year, however, the football field will not be the only performance venue for the Rajun’ Bull Band; the ensemble has been invited to perform in Vienna, Austria and Prague, Czechia in March of 2019. Performing abroad is a distinct honor for these music students. “Traveling to foreign countries in such musically historical places like Vienna and Prague is an extension of the classroom. It creates a lifetime of memories and learning,” said Jon Sever, Director of Bands at Bloomingdale. Parents of students who have participated in such trips agree with Sever’s assessment. have traveled with the Bloomingdale music programs. Maley said the band trips are trips of a lifetime and added, “My children experienced music in a way that they couldn’t have in the classroom.” Facilitating such a trip is no small endeavor; the band will have to raise $700,000 for its members, instruments and equipment to make it to Europe. The Bloomingdale Band Boosters will be supporting the trip through fundraising. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for our students and the band boosters will provide as many opportunities to help offset the costs with fundraising opportunities. We welcome anyone who would like to help with this,” said Alan Chastain, Band Boosters President. The Rajun’ Bull Band is asking for additional support from the community in the form of sponsorships and donations. Anyone interested in contributing to Bloomingdale’s travel fund may contact Jon Sever or the Bloomingdale Band Boosters at jon.sever@sdhc.k12.fl.us or rajunbullband@mail.com.

Former Brandon Baseball Player Has Successful College Career Ever since he was just four years old, Jerry Biller III has had a love for the game of baseball. “I fell in love with the game and I stuck with it,” Biller said. He started playing at a YMCA camp in Orlando and with his hard work and dedication, has turned his love of the game into a baseball scholarship at Central Penn College. Biller played at Brandon High School for Matt Stallbaumer in a very competitive Hillsborough County. Biller thinks that part of his success came from playing against some of the best. “Hillsborough County is the one of the most competitive counties in the nation when it comes to athletes that have come out of here and have made a name for themselves,” Biller said. “It helped in my all-around game. To be successful, you had to compete against players that have gone on to do great things.” After a very successful career at Brandon, he graduated in 2016 as the seventh-ranked fielder in the country by MaxPreps.com. Biller accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Central

Penn College in Enola, Pennsylvania. “Visiting the school, it felt like home,” Biller said. “It’s a small school with small class sizes, and I knew that I would have a successful education. I knew that it was the right next step for

me.” Biller has had a decorated college baseball career at Central Penn. He was recently selected to the USCAA National All-Academic Team for the second time, and was selected as a 2018 Second Team USCAA All-America. Central Penn College was founded in 1881, and in its 100-

plus years, Biller is the first athlete there to be selected to both teams in the same season. He is the first player in school history to be selected to the All-American Team as well. He was also selected as the Co-Male Athlete of the Year at his school. The second baseman has already secured many of the school’s career baseball records. He holds the Central Penn College record with 200+ plate appearances, batting .380 with an onbase percentage of .492, with 39 runs batted in and 38 stolen bases. Biller just finished working on an internship in Pennsylvania with Target as an Executive Team Level Intern. He is working on his degree in Business Management. He is accelerating his academic schedule and plans to graduate in just three years in May 2019. When this season is over, Biller plans on ending his baseball career and pursing a job in the field of business. He still wants to be around the game as a coach or athletic director in the future.

By Kate Quesada

Registration is open until September 19 for the Tampa Bay Active Life Games which will take place October 5-19 throughout the county.

Last year hundreds of seniors from all over Hillsborough County participated in events from pickle board to dominos at the annual Tampa Bay Active Life Games. Registration is now underway for this year’s event, which will take place throughout the county from October 5-19. The Olympic-style competition is open to adults 50 and older and is hosted by Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation, the City of Tampa, the City of Temple Terrace and Friends of the County Parks. “This event is very important to us because we have a large constituent of seniors in our area and it is well known that the longer you stay active, the longer you stay healthy,” said Rick Valdez, director of Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation. “There is great talent all around us and every year we find someone new who inspires us.” This year is the 38th annual competition offering a variety of contests for all skill and fitness levels with events ranging from track and field to cycling. Some of the more than two dozen events are qualifiers for state completion. “There is something for every-

one,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandra Murman. “There is even a baking contest.” Registration costs $30 and entrants can compete in as many events as they want. There is an additional $25 charge for those participating in the golf competition, which includes use of a cart. In addition, opening day festivities and the awards luncheon are included with registration. Residents can register on-line and select sports, activities and pay entrance fees until September 19. The registration fee can be paid online with a credit card or PayPal or payment can be mailed. The event, previously known as The Senior Games, is a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games which will take place in Clearwater, December 1-9. Residents who participate in the Florida Senior Games can qualify for the National Senior Games which will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June, 2019.
