Popular Christian Music Artists To Headline The Family Faith Fest By Amanda Boston

This year the Diocese of St. Petersburg celebrates 50 years of ministry. In honor of its golden year anniversary, the Diocese has orchestrated a celebratory music and ministry festival featuring two chart-topping Christian music artists. Dubbed as the Family Faith Fest, GRAMMY® nominated singer and songwriter Jeremy Camp and the two-time GMA Dove Award winner Colton Dixon will headline the festival. The free event will take place on Saturday, October 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Tampa’s Al Lopez Park. “The purpose of the Family Faith Fest is to gather together all families from our surrounding community to celebrate the many blessings the good Lord has bestowed upon us these past 50 years,” said Teresa L. Peterson, the Director of Communications at the Diocese of St. Petersburg. “Everyone is invited, and there will be something for everyone—people of all ages!”

and celebrate our faith and to pray together and to just have a good time together.” Peterson continued, “While the event is free, we are asking people to bring nonperishable food items for the homeless and hungry of our community. We hope to collect a large amount of food to help people in need.” Registration is recommended at www.familyfaithfest.org so that the Diocese can

On July 21 and 22, the Tampa Bay Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) hosted its fifth annual ‘King of Kings’ 7-on-7 football tournament at the Buccaneers’ new indoor practice facility. The two-day competition culminated on Sunday afternoon with the championship game between the high schools Chamberlain and Jefferson. Chamberlain High School took home the trophy, but those whose hearts were changed by Jesus Christ went home as victors. River of Life Christian Center—Planting Seeds For A Better Tomorrow

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Photo By Ed Booth, Huth and Booth Photography

River of Life Christian Center has partnered with Reflections Apartments located in Riverview through the Seeds Mentoring program where volunteers spend time with students after school with an array of activities as well as homework assistance.

Marcus Marshall, Outreach Director of River of Life Christian Center, knows personally how partnerships are the lifeblood of a healthy community. In October 2017, Marshall learned that the apartment complex down the street from the church was under new management, so he stopped by to introduce himself. “I wanted to let her know River of Life is not just there spiritually but also available for practical needs as well,” said Marshall. “So, I asked the simple question, ‘What can we do to help?’” The manager told Marshall that the children living in the apartments needed positive after-school activities. Without structure or mentors, she was seeing that some of the students were getting into trouble. “We gathered teams from our church to do a neighborhood cleanup day, and then in January of 2018 we started Seeds Mentor program,” said Marshall. “The word got out, and it started to grow.” The program provides mentors to the children to assist with homework as well as fun activities such as games, arts and crafts, as well as Bible activities. The park in the back of the neighborhood provided the space for outdoor activities. The park only housed a playground, which was perfect for the younger students, but Marshall wanted to provide a space for some of the other students in the neighborhood. He felt a basketball court would be a perfect fit. The volunteers went to work, and when the basketball court was completed, Marshall knew that this was key to instilling teamwork, friendships and hard work into the students. Riverview

Chamber hosted a ribbon cutting for the official opening of the court on Saturday, August 4. During the event, the church hosted games, give-a-ways, and more than 100 bookbags were provided to students as they prepared to go back to school. This event and basketball court was made possible by many local sponsors and businesses including eCycle, Jahner, Inc., and Oldcastle Cement. “We believe we have the opportunity to be part of the story of these students’ lives that is being written. And as they go into their families, schools and grow up and begin to work, we want them to be seeds of hope, seeds of joy, seeds of love so that no matter where they are in life, they will never forget they can be a seed to help better someone’s life,” said Marshall. “We know it takes a village to raise these students and we are committed to building a better tomorrow.” River of Life Christian Center is located at 6605 Krycul Ave. in Riverview and holds church services every Sunday. It also hosts a food pantry every second and fourth Monday, as well as the second Wednesday every month starting at 9 a.m. The pantry is not only for families in need but also an opportunity for people in the community to volunteer and serve in the community. The Seeds Mentoring program begins Tuesday, September 11 of this year. For more information on volunteer opportunities or to donate, email mmarshall@rolccfl.org. Boo-Boo’s Hurt!

By Debora Coty

Raise your hand if you know what it feels like when a body part you never really gave much thought to suddenly aches and throbs and burns incessantly. Owww becomes your go-to verbiage. Get up: Owww. Sit down: Owww. Take the dog for a drag: Owww. That teensy torn knee meniscus becomes ALL you can think about. In the indulgent spirit of Woe is Me, I’d love to continue whining about my achy breaky knee and how miserable 12 long weeks of rehab can be. Instead, I will attempt to uplift both of us from my pit of despair. When I asked Papa God to divert my attention somewhere productive, here’s where He took me: “But God has made our bodies with many parts, and he has put each part just where he wants it … In fact, some of the parts that seem weakest and least important are really the most necessary … So God has put the body together in such a way that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. This makes for harmony among the members … If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it” (1 Corinthians 12:18-26, NLT). Now I realize Paul was speaking in a spiritual sense of the (church) body of Christ, but it applies ever so literally to the

human body too. The body parts that seem weakest and least important turn out to be the most necessary. My tiny knee disc has never received any dignity or honor or accolades. Not even one award. I’ve just always expected it to be there and do its job. But when it’s not able to do its job, I most assuredly notice. Owww. So I’ve decided to make a list of unheralded body parts that I’m thankful for. I hereby praise Papa God for an ingeniously designed body composed of interdependent parts and the amazing harmony among its lowliest and oft-overlooked members: pinkie toenails, digestive juices, teeth that don’t ache, eyelashes (although age seems to be thinning these as other body parts thicken), ligaments that hold every single joint together, mucus, red blood cells … Say, won’t you join me in adding a few of your own to the list and praising our Creator with me for the least of these?

First Baptist Of Riverview Celebrates 125 Years, Looks Forward To Future By Michael Smith

the current worship center that was built in 1979 and expand the lobby and restrooms. Phase 2 will add a children’s ministry building and administrative offices. Phase 3 will build a fellowship hall/gymnasium, kitchen and student ministry loft. The final phase will add an educational building for adult LifeGroups and provide additional parking. “We will help people discover and live out their life mission in Christ,” said SeniorPastor Jeff Knight. “We see the intentional development of our church campus as a means to this very important end.” Tisha Hudson, whose father, Ben L. Earnest Jr., pastored the church from 1956 to 1987, said First

First Baptist invites you to join them September 8 and 9 to celebrate what God has done and is still doing and to look forward to what is in store for the next century. Papa John’s Pizza also attended the event and donated 35 pizzas for the families to enjoy. Newsome student Morgan Gardner was the leader of the backpack distribution. “I help regularly with Seeds of Hope and have gotten to know the families and the kids. This kind of stuff is so helpful for them and that’s why I wanted to lead this event,” Gardner said. President of Seeds of Hope Leda Eaton explained the goal of their organization is to listen to what the people need and help where it is needed. “We meet the need of the community we serve. We are not people who come to just throw things at people. If they did not need backpacks, we would not be here doing backpacks,” Eaton said. Along with distributing more than 200 backpacks, 132 boxes of food were also given to families to take home. The DiMuzio family, from FishHawk, is a fun and active family that creates their own The Bodaciously ‘Bodaciously Awesome Family, Awesome’ podAdam, Anthony and Zachary featuring their cast every week. guest star, Mom. Named ‘The Bodaciously Awesome Family Show,’ Adam, Anthony (age 11) and Zachary (age 6) share their family experiences, whether they are here at home or traveling around the states. Adam came up with the idea to document the experiences with his two sons last summer while in Alaska and the first podcast officially released in October 2017. “We just started the show because I was seeing all the things we do as a family and it was actually a new way to add an element to something we did together and help them (the kids) remember it,” Adam said. “A new way to how we can capture their voices, their personalities, and in places of life.” Anthony described the podcasts as a ‘time capsule’ for the family.

By Sammie Green

Each podcast is about an activity they have done or place they have visited as a family, with Mom making a frequent guest appearance in many of the shows. Families can listen to these podcasts together for some laughs or for ideas of places to visit on family trips. Each podcast has something unique and entertaining about it, from Zachary losing a tooth in the middle of a show to the whole family trying odd foods from Epcot. Adam said the way the family has so many experiences in all these places is simply by “maximizing what you do.” The Bodaciously Awesome Family Show has nearly 6,000 downloads with an audience from near and far. Listeners can find the show on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play Music, Spotify and the Geek Dad Blog. New podcasts are released weekly with a different and fun topic for each one. Former Line Dance Teacher Turns 100 & Says Live Life One Day At A Time

By Tatiana Ortiz

Whenever Apollo Beach resident Isabelle Wojdyla hears a good tune she cannot remain still and begins to move with the music. Dancing would be something she is all too familiar with since she Isabelle Wojdyla’s taught line will be celebrating dancing for 45 her 100th birthday years in Brandon, Apollo Beach and Sun City. At 100-years-old Wojdyla shares her life’s story about dancing. Wojdyla was born in Plymouth, Pennsylvania and moved to Detroit, Michigan at the age of two. In 1933, her father paid for dance lessons. She kept dancing and later on attended one session of ballroom dancing at an Arthur Murray Dance Studio. She also met her husband Erwin Wojdyla during a dance at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan. After 62 years of marriage, Erwin passed away. In April of 1973, the Wojdyla’s moved to Florida and this would be where Isabelle started teaching line dancing classes. She got into teaching through a neighbor who knew that Isabelle enjoyed dancing. Her neighbor had invited

Isabelle to parks and recreation one day, which ended up becoming the reason behind her teaching career. “I always loved dancing and when I had the opportunity to teach, I jumped at the chance to do it,” Wojdyla said. She and her neighbor would go to parks and recreation, get the music, learn the steps and practice. She specifically taught ages 75 to 90. Unfortunately, her teaching career came to an end in 2008 at the age of 90 because she fell and broke her elbow. She says that her secret to longevity stems from her faith, being mentally and physically active. In regards to keeping an active mind, she reads, works on puzzles and word puzzles. She lives with her daughter Pennye Scheiber who also got into dancing as well. Every two weeks Scheiber visits the library for her mother and checkouts six books at a time. Wojdyla also has a motto that she believes in, which states keep laughter in your life and live one day at a time.

Elizabeth – Faithful To Receive God’s Promise

By Kelly Wise Valdes

The story of Elizabeth only appears in the Bible in the first chapter of Luke in the New Testament. However, Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, is also later referenced in Luke 7:28, “Among those born of women, there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist.” Elizabeth’s life was most certainly blessed. She was a daughter of a priest of Israel with a lineage traced back to Aaron, the first high priest of Israel. She was named after Aaron's wife, Elisheba or Elizabeth, which means “God is my oath.” Her husband, Zacharias, was a respected priest, and they were faithful servants of God. But, Elizabeth was unable to have children, and the community viewed this as a curse from God. Regardless, Zacharias and Elizabeth continually demonstrated their faithfulness to God. In those times, the inability to bear children was grounds for husbands to divorce their wives. However, Zacharias and Elizabeth believed in God’s faithfulness and chose to continue to hold onto His promises. As time passed, Elizabeth grew older and became well beyond her childbearing years. One day, Zacharias was in the temple, and the Angel Gabriel appeared before him. Gabriel explained that Elizabeth was to give birth to a son, and his name should be John. God specifically chose Elizabeth to be the mother of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus. So, not only did God fulfill His promise to Elizabeth

to grant her a child, but He also knew that both Elizabeth and Zacharias would provide their son the faithful upbringing that would help him fulfill his prophesied ministry. When God chose Elizabeth to be the mother of John the Baptist, her life was was transformed. Her reputation as a barren woman changed into a miraculous woman who was pregnant at an old age to fulfill the Word of God. In Luke 1:25, Elizabeth expressed her gratitude for God’s blessing: "The Lord has done this for me," she said. "In these days He has shown His favor and taken away my disgrace among the people." Elizabeth also encouraged Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, Mary came to visit her while she was pregnant with Jesus. Elizabeth’s words to Mary in Luke 1:45 are inspirational words that all Christians can embrace, “The Lord has blessed you because you believed that He will keep His promise.” After Elizabeth gave birth, she and Zacharias followed the Angel Gabriel’s command to name their son, John, and he grew up to become a faithful messenger of Jesus. It takes an exceptional mother to raise a son who would have such a high calling. Elizabeth taught him the Holy Scriptures, including the prophecies that related to him and his purpose. What should we determine from Elizabeth’s life of faith? First, God was faithful in His promise to her. Elizabeth believed in God’s promises and gave birth to a son in her old age. Her story allows us to believe that God will fulfill His promises to us despite impossible circumstances. Elizabeth’s message of faithfulness and longsuffering demonstrates that our faithfulness will lead to the fulfillment of God’s promise to His children.

By Kelly Wise Valdes

It’s that time of year again when parents are out buying back-to-school supplies, backpacks, lunch boxes and clothes for the new school year. This time can be overwhelming for kids of all ages, particularly if they are more nervous than excited about the new school year. For younger kids who are going to school for the first time, it is about learning how to make friends and navigating new rules and expectations. For older kids who have school experience, it’s about trying to fit in with the increasing pressure of academics and social issues. Whether you’re dealing with the first day of school blues or it’s “just” another year, God has a plan for your school year. It doesn’t matter what grade you're in--God's got you covered year-round.

Chris Pratt Shares His Love for God at the Teen Choice Awards

Actor Chris Pratt, the Jurassic World star, took to the Teen Choice Award stage on Sunday, August 12 to accept the award of Choice Movie Actor. While receiving his award, Pratt lovingly joked with his fans saying, “I’m so thrilled to be here. I have not been a teen for quite some time.” Then shifting gears to his speech, Pratt said, "I want to thank God. I always do that when I am up on a big platform in front of a bunch of young faces." He offered a challenge to the crowd saying, "I love God, that's my thing I love Him! And you should too!" Pratt is open about his Christianity and seemingly does not

wants the best for you. Believe that, I do,” said Pratt. “Nobody is perfect. People will tell you that you are perfect just the way that you are, but you’re not! You’re imperfect. You always will be, but there is a powerful force that designed you that way, and if you are willing to accept that, you will have grace. And grace is a gift. Like the freedom that we enjoy in this country, that grace was paid for with somebody else’s blood. Do not forget it. Don’t take it for granted.”

Donate Blood Regularly For Personal Residents Meet Candidates At Bell Shoals Forum Just In Time For Early Voting And Community Health Benefits By Michelle Colesanti

Kerrie Hoening, Michelle Colesanti and Marie Gilmore stand with the Big Red Bus OneBlood staff. Ten people donated at the drive that the Osprey Observer hosted on August 2.

The next time you see OneBlood’s Big Red Bus Bloodmobile in a parking lot, you might want to seriously think about stopping in to make a donation. We all know that by doing so, you help save other lives, but did you know that the one to benefit the most just might be you?

The Osprey Observer recently hosted a blood drive and I started wondering about the benefits of the donation not only to the blood recipient, but also to the donor. There is no better feeling than knowing you have done something that might save a life and donating blood most certainly fills that niche. Feeling good about your unselfish act can help promote longevity of your own life and helps to put you in a positive mood – not a bad start. Denise Graf, Graphic Artist for the paper said, “My dad has always donated blood in the past. This trained me into being eager to donate whenever there was an opportunity. While witnessing how much blood Dad needed during his recent open heart surgeries (includ-

ing a heart transplant), I recognized each pint as a blessing. I will continue donating every opportunity I get. It saves lives.” Prior to donating, you get a mini health test – blood pressure taken, iron levels measured and temperature noted. You will also get a cholesterol reading after donation.

What you might not know is that it might help you with weight loss. A pint of blood will help you immediately lose one pound – one 16 oz. pint of blood equals one pound body weight. You will gain it back in the liquids you consume afterwards, but for the next two days, your body will burn approximately 650 additional calories while your body works hard to regenerate new blood cells. Donating blood regularly helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. When you donate, some of the iron in your body is depleted. It will quickly be replenished during the weeks following donation, but by regulating iron levels this way, it can prevent danger caused by too much iron on blood vessels and reduce the risk of diseases associated with blockage and other blood vessel abnormalities. Along with that, studies show that regular blood donors also had lower risks of cancer and mortality, again thanks to the lower levels of iron. Donating also helps to regulate cholesterol levels, accelerate wound healing and much more. In order to donate, you must be in general good health, 16 years old and over 110 pounds. Be a hero to someone. For more information or to make an appointment, visit www.oneblood.org.

Local Puppy Fosters Needed For Lithia Service Dog Training Business animals to low-budget clients. ABCK9s hosts an average of 15 dogs at the

ABCK9s offers service dog training and its facility in Lithia. The group is always looking for puppy raisers to foster dogs.

For people with physical and psychiatric disabilities, service dogs can be life saving. But, as Lithia resident Annika Charo learned when she determined that a service dog could help her, the welltrained animals usually come with a very high price tag, often upwards of $10,000. So Charo started ABCK9s on her Lithia property with the goal of providing low-cost service animals to those in need. In order to keep costs reasonable, she is asking for the public’s help to train and prepare the dogs for their roles as service

training facility at a time. The dogs come from breeders and rescues and some are donated to the program. “Each dog is temperament tested before coming into our program,” said Charo. “They must not have aggression, outstanding fear or any negative signs. They get socialized through extensive training to aid their future handler.”

Once Charo learns the dog’s personality, she determines what speciality to give them. “We temperament test the dogs and find their strengths and weaknesses,” she said. “Larger dogs with well built frames are often used for mobility, Velcro-like dogs are often used for PTSD. The dog cannot be too sensitive to emotions with psychiatric disabilities or they can become reactive and become nervous or too sensitive as well.” Depending on the disability, the dogs are trained to perform specific tasks to help their handler. For example, a dog can learn to be aware when a person is having a panic attack and can retrieve medication or guide to an exit and find a safe place for the person to calm down. “A service dog is a medical device and in order to prepare them to be an asset to their future handlers, they must be exposed to many situations,” said Charo. One of the most valuable parts of the training, according to Charo, is only possi-

ble with the help of volunteers. “Puppy raising, where a family or individual fosters a dog in their home, is essential to any service dog program,” she said. “The dog learns individually and gets more work with house manners, basic obedience and house breaking.” The fostering can last anywhere from three12 months, depending on the household, and volunteers can come to weekly lessons where training is given step-by-step. ABCK9s, located at 19065 Boyette Rd., also offers boarding, obedience and behavioral lessons to the general public including specific cases such as aggression or rehabilitation.
