Riverview Native Serves With U.S. C.A.T.E. Foundation Announces Family Fun & Community Day Navy At Naval Hospital Guam By Amy Schechter By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Robert Zahn
Looking for something enjoyable to do with the entire family, but don’t want to be outside during the dog days of summer? The C.A.T.E. Foundation is excited to announce its first annual Family Fun and Community Day at E.G. Simmons Park on October 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. Just in time for fall in Florida! This event offers something for the entire family with free activities for children. Kids will spend hours as they jump through bouncy houses, have their faces painted, and hurl water balloons at each other. When ready for a rest, they can ask for a balloon animal from a friendly clown or watch a magic show. When the family gets hungry, you can select from one of twenty-five vendors to please even the picky palettes. Cash or card is accepted at most vendors. C.A.T.E. is also sponsoring a Chili Cook-Off during the event from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.. Aspiring chefs can enter for a $25 fee with prizes and trophies for the top recipes. Chili connoisseurs can sample a bowl for only $5. C.A.T.E. Co-founder, Tina Patch, urges the entire community to check it out: “We’re excited. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We plan to do this event every October.” C.A.T.E. stands for Conquering Addiction Through Education. The C.A.T.E. Foundation is dedicated to helping adults who struggle with addiction and their families. They seek to reestablish lives through education. Proceeds from the Family Fun and Community Day will benefit programs that give back directly to the community. Patch continues, “It takes a community to come forward and acknowledge some of these tough issues.” Besides support groups for drug, alcohol, or gambling abuse, C.A.T.E. offers free yoga classes to promote
healthy living and is poised to offer support classes for people suffering from food addictions. C.A.T.E. is still seeking vendors and business sponsors. All sponsors will be given a tent at the event to hand out advertising and a permanent place on the foundation’s website under patrons. For more information on the Chili Cook-Off, how to become a vendor or sponsor, or more detailed information, contact Tina Patch or Sharon Lafelice at 7737175 or 331-5246. For more information on the C.A.T.E Foundation, visit www.2CATE.org or follow them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CateFoundatio n/. E.G. Simmons Park is located at 2401 19th Ave NW, Ruskin, 33570. Please note, there is a $2 per vehicle (up to 8 people) entry fee to all Hillsborough County parks, cash only. C.A.T.E. is located at 5942 Frond Way, Apollo Beach, 33572.

Kimi’s Ice Cream And Coffees Expands To Riverview
By Tatiana Ortiz
Inside dining area of Kimi's Ice Cream and Coffees in Riverview.
People can hit a homerun as they step up to the plate and order one or two scoops of ice cream inside a miniature baseball helmet at Kimi’s Ice Cream and Coffees in Riverview. Those interested can select any of the 30 Major League Baseball teams with an option to purchase a helmet without ice cream as prices do vary. Owners Adam Souza and his brother Jay Souza wanted to recreate a childhood memory as Adam recalls going to baseball games and getting ice cream in a baseball helmet. In addition, it also offers sundaes, milk shakes, Italian Ices, coffees and more. On August 13 of this year, Kimi’s Ice Cream and Coffees opened its second location. The original one is located in Apollo Beach, which the Souza’s took over in June 2015. What led to the expansion was when the Souza’s saw an opportunity to grow their customer base since many come from the Riverview

It also offers cappuccinos and other coffee products from Brisk Coffee Co. in Tampa. Customers can earn a free scoop of ice cream through its loyalty punch card system. This free program grants the person their reward after the 11th ice cream. “Overall, I am happy to be involved in the community and humbled by the support we received thus far,” Adam said. Vanessa Bevington Registration is open until September 19 for the Tampa Bay Active Life Games which will take place October 5-19 throughout the county.
Last year hundreds of seniors from all over Hillsborough County participated in events from pickle board to dominos at the annual Tampa Bay Active Life Games. Registration is now underway for this year’s event, which will take place throughout the county from October 5-19. The Olympic-style competition is open to adults 50 and older and is hosted by Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation, the City of Tampa, the City of Temple Terrace and Friends of the County Parks. “This event is very important to us because we have a large constituent of seniors in our area and it is well known that the longer you stay active, the longer you stay healthy,” said Rick Valdez, director of Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation. “There is great talent all around us and every year we find someone new who inspires us.” This year is the 38th annual competition offering a variety of contests for all skill and fitness levels with events ranging from track and field to cycling. Some of the more than two dozen events are qualifiers for state completion. “There is something for every-
one,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandra Murman. “There is even a baking contest.” Registration costs $30 and entrants can compete in as many events as they want. There is an additional $25 charge for those participating in the golf competition, which includes use of a cart. In addition, opening day festivities and the awards luncheon are included with registration. Residents can register on-line and select sports, activities and pay entrance fees until September 19. The registration fee can be paid online with a credit card or PayPal or payment can be mailed. The event, previously known as The Senior Games, is a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games which will take place in Clearwater, December 1-9. Residents who participate in the Florida Senior Games can qualify for the National Senior Games which will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June, 2019. Armed Forces Families Foundation. All dollars went to fund projects supporting the families of our service men and women. The sold-out inaugural Skyway 10K took place on March 4 and was an overwhelming success. Participant registration for the run across the Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge realized its targeted 7,000 participant capacity only five days after being announced. It was the first running event across the Skyway Bridge since it opened in 1987. In all, people from 40 states, three countries and all five branches of the United States armed forces participated in the run. As planned, 100 percent of the proceeds from the Skyway 10K are going to benefit the Armed Forces Families Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides 100 percent of the funds they raise back to projects that help our military service men and women and their families. The annual run begins on I-275 at the rest area just south of the Skyway Bridge and ends at the rest area on the North side of the bridge, which equals 10 kilometers or 6.2 miles. Anyone interested in volunteering for or sponsoring the second annual Skyway 10K can visit skyway10k.com or emailing info@skyway10k.com.

Proactive Water Testing At County Schools Staff Report
In recent months, there have been a number of news stories throughout the country about high levels of lead in school drinking water. Hillsborough County School District has proactive efforts in our district to ensure the water that students and staff drink is safe for consumption. According to Chris Farkas, Deputy Superintendent of Operations, “Since last year, we have tested the water at 1,781 individual faucets, drinking fountains, and fixtures where water is likely to be used for drinking or cooking in 53 schools and district sites. We will continue testing the drinking water sources in our schools for lead until we have checked all 270 facilities in our district.” Since the average campus age is 50 years old, older pipes and fixtures do have a higher likelihood of adding lead to water. Federal guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency recommend action to fix an issue when lead is measured at 20 parts per billion or higher. One part per billion is equivalent to a single drop of water in a swimming pool. “Our district is using a stricter standard of 15 parts per billion. Any fixture

found to have lead levels of 15 parts per billion or higher is immediately taken out of operation and is not used again until the problem is fixed,” commented Farkas. Of the 1,781 samples taken so far, 26 have returned with levels higher than the guidelines. District protocol is to immediately shut down the affected faucet, correct the issue, and then retest the water to ensure the levels are in compliance before putting the faucet back into service. Options to correct an issue include replacing the fixture, adding water filters, or other plumbing projects. Alternative sources of water may be supplied to schools if needed. Each school may have dozens of faucets requiring testing, and results take time to come back from the testing lab. Results are posted as received at www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/watertesting. If a school has a fixture testing over the 15 parts per billion level, parents and staff will be notified by email and text message. If you have any questions about the testing or results as we receive them, please visit www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/doc/2012/maintenance/resources/watertesting-faq/.

Local Puppy Fosters Needed For Lithia Service Dog Training Business

ABCK9s offers service dog training and its facility in Lithia. The group is always looking for volunteer puppy raisers to foster dogs as part of their training.
For people with physical and psychiatric disabilities, service dogs can be life saving. But, as Lithia resident Annika Charo learned when she determined that a service dog could help her, the welltrained animals usually come with a very high price tag, often upwards of $10,000. So Charo started ABCK9s on her Lithia property with the goal of providing low-cost service animals to those in need. In order to keep costs reasonable, she is asking for the public’s help to train and prepare the dogs for their roles as service animals to low-budget clients. ABCK9s hosts an average of 15 dogs at the training facility at a time. The dogs come from breeders and rescues and some are donated to the program. “Each dog is temperament tested before coming into our program,” said Charo. “They must not have aggression, outstanding fear or any negative signs. They get socialized through extensive training to aid their future handler.” Once Charo learns the dog’s personality, she determines what speciality to give them. “We temperament test the dogs and find their strengths and weaknesses,” she said. “Larger dogs with well built frames are often used for mobility, Velcro-like dogs are often used for PTSD. The dog cannot be too sensitive to emotions with psychiatric disabilities or they can become reactive and become nervous or too sensitive as well.” Depending on the disability, the dogs
retrieve medication or guide to an exit and find a safe place for the person to calm down. “A service dog is a medical device and in order to prepare them to be an asset to their future handlers, they must be exposed to many situations,” said Charo. One of the most valuable parts of the training, according to Charo, is only possible with the help of volunteers. “Puppy raising, where a family or individual fosters a dog in their home, is essential to any service dog program,” she said. “The dog learns individually and gets more work with house manners, basic obedience and house breaking.” The fostering can last anywhere from three-12 months, depending on the household, and volunteers can come to weekly lessons where training is given step-by-step. ABCK9s, located at 19065 Boyette Rd., also offers boarding, obedience and behavioral lessons to the general public including specific cases such as aggression or rehabilitation. Local Schools Start New Year With Security Upgrade
By Kate Quesada
Many local schools saw changes in security policies when students headed back to their classrooms last month. In addition to the presence of
security officers, all schools in the county now have buzzer systems making sure that only those approved to be on campus can enter. According to Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) Media Outreach Tanya Arja, the buzzer systems were installed over the summer at every school that did not previously have one. At the end of the 201718 school year, 150 of the county schools were already using the system. “It is just another layer of security in our schools,” said Arja. Each system costs approximately $5,000 and capital dollars were used to pay for the upgrades. The buzzers were installed at the main doors of most schools, so that front office staff is able to see anyone attempting to enter.
“The schools will have one access point and all visitors have to go through the main office to get on campus,” said Arja. “The buzzer allows the front office to determine who is coming on campus and for what purpose before allowing them into the office.” HCPS hosted a media event at Barrington Middle School in FishHawk Ranch last month where Deputy Superintendent Chris Farkas spoke about the importance of keeping schools safe. “Security is on everyone’s minds - students, staff, parents and visitors,” said Arja. “We must change habits, including no longer holding doors open for others to enter a school.” Arja also explained that security policies, including whether parents can walk students to their classrooms at the beginning of the day, are individual to the school. “It is up to the principal at each school because each campus set up is different,” she said. For more information, contact HCPS at 272-4000.

River of Life Christian Center has partnered with Reflections Apartments located in Riverview through the Seeds Mentoring program where volunteers spend time with students after school with an array of activities as well as homework assistance.
Marcus Marshall, Outreach Director of River of Life Christian Center, knows personally how partnerships are the lifeblood of a healthy community. In October 2017, Marshall learned that the apartment complex down the street from the church was under new management, so he stopped by to introduce himself. “I wanted to let her know River of Life is not just there spiritually but also available for practical needs as well,” said Marshall. “So, I asked the simple question, ‘What can we do to help?’” The manager told Marshall that the children living in the apartments needed positive after-school activities. Without structure or mentors, she was seeing that some of the students were getting into trouble. “We gathered teams from our church to do a neighborhood cleanup day, and then in January of 2018 we started Seeds Mentor program,” said Marshall. “The word got out, and it started to grow.” The program provides mentors to the children to assist with homework as well as fun activities such as games, arts and crafts, as well as Bible activities. The park in the back of the neighborhood provided the space for outdoor activities. The park only housed a playground, which was perfect for the younger students, but Marshall wanted to provide a space for some of the other students in the neighborhood. He felt a basketball court would be a perfect fit. The volunteers went to work, and when the basketball court was completed, Marshall knew that this was key to instilling teamwork, friendships and hard work into the students. Riverview
Chamber hosted a ribbon cutting for the official opening of the court on Saturday, August 4. During the event, the church hosted games, give-a-ways, and more than 100 bookbags were provided to students as they prepared to go back to school. This event and basketball court was made possible by many local sponsors and businesses including eCycle, Jahner, Inc., and Oldcastle Cement. “We believe we have the opportunity to be part of the story of these students’ lives that is being written. And as they go into their families, schools and grow up and begin to work, we want them to be seeds of hope, seeds of joy, seeds of love so that no matter where they are in life, they will never forget they can be a seed to help better someone’s life,” said Marshall. “We know it takes a village to raise these students and we are committed to building a better tomorrow.” River of Life Christian Center is located at 6605 Krycul Ave. in Riverview and holds church services every Sunday. It also hosts a food pantry every second and fourth Monday, as well as the second Wednesday every month starting at 9 a.m. The pantry is not only for families in need but also an opportunity for people in the community to volunteer and serve in the community. The Seeds Mentoring program begins Tuesday, September 11 of this year. For more information on volunteer opportunities or to donate, email mmarshall@rolccfl.org. Crisis Center Of Tampa Bay Distributes Heroes Run 5K Unites Community To Crisis Hotline Information To Students Remember Lives Lost On 9/11 By Ken Gibson
Crisis Center of Tampa Bay, President & CEO, Clara Reynolds presents information about 2-1-1 and the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay to Hillsborough County Public Schools Student Services staff. (Pictured L-R: Valerie Dickson, Carmela Pizzichetti and Kimberly Terrell.
The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay has distributed 150,000 plastic 2-1-1 information cards to Student Services staff working in Hillsborough County Public Schools. Boxes of cards were distributed to Student Services staff at a school district professional planning day at Riverview High School on August 3. The cards remind people that help and connections to community resources can be found 24 hours a day through a simple phone call to 21-1. Funds to print the cards were provided by TECO. In addition, Crisis Center of Tampa Bay President & CEO, Clara Reynolds, did a presentation to the school counselors and provided an overview of Crisis Center of Tampa Bay services. “School counselors and teachers are community heroes. They help to mold and shape the next generation, but they can’t do everything for the kids and their families. People in our community need to know they can call 2-1-1. That number is a community gateway where they can have a confidential conversation and be connected to help.” said Clara Reynolds President & CEO of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. “TECO is proud to support this important initiative,” said Holly Miller Moore, regional manager of Tampa Electric and Peoples Gas. “By helping to provide resources like these cards, we’re helping to empower and
educate families and grow stronger and safer communities.” This is the second year in a row the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay has worked with Hillsborough County Public Schools to distribute 2-1-1 cards. In 2017, over 60,000 cards were distributed to high school students. This year cards will be distributed to elementary and middle school students in August with additional cards being distributed to high school students in September. The mission of the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay is to ensure that no one in the community has to face crisis alone. The organization is the community’s gateway to help, hope, and healing, and is Tampa Bay’s elite provider of crisis and trauma services. Responding to over 160,000 requests for help each year, the nonprofit agency offers a range of evidence based programs designed to meet community needs: • Corbett Trauma Center (trauma counseling and sexual assault survivor services) • TransCare (9-1-1 emergency and mental health ambulance services, medical van transportation) • Gateway Contact Center (2-1-1: suicide prevention, crisis counseling, and information and referral services) For more information, please visit www.crisiscenter.com.

On August 2, Seeds of Hope hosted its second annual back-to-school backpack distribution to local families in need. At the event, more than 200 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to kids getting ready to go back to school. Papa John’s Pizza also attended the event and donated 35 pizzas for the families to enjoy. Newsome student Morgan Gardner was the leader of the backpack distribution. “I help regularly with Seeds of Hope and have gotten to know the families and the kids. This kind of stuff is so helpful for them and that’s why I wanted to lead this event,” Gardner said. President of Seeds of Hope Leda Eaton explained the goal of their organization is to listen to what the people need and help where it is needed. “We meet the need of the community we serve. We are not people who come to just throw things at people. If they did not need backpacks, we would not be here doing backpacks,” Eaton said. Along with distributing more than 200 backpacks, 132 boxes of food were also given to families to take home. Donate Blood Regularly For Personal And Community Health Benefits
By Michelle Colesanti
Kerrie Hoening, Michelle Colesanti and Marie Gilmore stand with the Big Red Bus OneBlood staff. Ten people donated at the drive that the Osprey Observer hosted on August 2.
The next time you see OneBlood’s Big Red Bus Bloodmobile in a parking lot, you might want to seriously think about stopping in to make a donation. We all know that by doing so, you help save other lives, but did you know that the one to benefit the most just might be you?
The Osprey Observer recently hosted a blood drive and I started wondering about the benefits of the donation not only to the blood recipient, but also to the donor. There is no better feeling than knowing you have done something that might save a life and donating blood most certainly fills that niche. Feeling good about your unselfish act can help promote longevity of your own life and helps to put you in a positive mood – not a bad start. Denise Graf, Graphic Artist for the paper said, “My dad has always donated blood in the past. This trained me into being eager to donate whenever there was an opportunity. While witnessing how much blood Dad needed during his recent open heart surgeries (includ-
ing a heart transplant), I recognized each pint as a blessing. I will continue donating every opportunity I get. It saves lives.” Prior to donating, you get a mini health test – blood pressure taken, iron levels measured and temperature noted. You will also get a cholesterol reading after donation.
What you might not know is that it might help you with weight loss. A pint of blood will help you immediately lose one pound – one 16 oz. pint of blood equals one pound body weight. You will gain it back in the liquids you consume afterwards, but for the next two days, your body will burn approximately 650 additional calories while your body works hard to regenerate new blood cells. Donating blood regularly helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. When you donate, some of the iron in your body is depleted. It will quickly be replenished during the weeks following donation, but by regulating iron levels this way, it can prevent danger caused by too much iron on blood vessels and reduce the risk of diseases associated with blockage and other blood vessel abnormalities. Along with that, studies show that regular blood donors also had lower risks of cancer and mortality, again thanks to the lower levels of iron. Donating also helps to regulate cholesterol levels, accelerate wound healing and much more. In order to donate, you must be in general good health, 16 years old and over 110 pounds. Be a hero to someone. For more information or to make an appointment, visit www.oneblood.org.

The Firehouse Cultural Center Kicks Off 2018-2019 Pub Season The Firehouse Cultural Center in Ruskin will kick off its 2018-19 Pub season this September. This season will feature a combination of Blues, Jazz, Big Band and comedy. The Firehouse Cultural Center started offering the Pub Series in 2013. According to Georgia Vahue, Executive Director of the Firehouse Cultural Center, “One part of our mission is to provide cultural opportunities and experiences for our south county residences. The Pub series was an opportunity to present exceptional music to audiences who enjoy and love music. Audiences can experience quality music at the Pub without the ‘bar scene’ atmosphere.” Performers are carefully selected. Vahue said, “We select our musical performances based on audience favorites and ones we have seen perform at other venues. We do not hire performers who have performed within six months or plan to perform elsewhere in south county.” The comedians are selected by Michael Murillo, a specialist in comedy. The 2018-19 Pub season will kick off with local favorite, Victoria Ginty & Ladyhawke with Friends on Saturday, September 8. Victoria Ginty & Ladyhawke are winners of the SBS Regional Blues Challenge. Their last show at the Firehouse Cultural Center sold out, so get your tickets fast. You will not want to miss an evening of Blues, Country and Rock. This show will also feature a 50/50 fundraiser to help send the group to Nashville. With just six months until St. Patrick's Day, come out to the Pub on Saturday, September 15, and

On Saturday, September 22 come out and listen to authentic Bossa Nova and Samba music from O Som Do Jazz. This group captures the unique sounds of the 1960-70's Brazilian Bossa Nova, Samba and MPB. Then, on Friday, September 28, the Pub will host Girls Night Out Comedy. The lineup for this fun evening featuring talented female comedians will be announced. Come see great local performances such as Victoria Ginty & Ladyhawke with Friends as they kick off the 2018-19 Firehouse Cultural Center’s Pub series on Saturday, September 8 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Throughout the year, audiences will be able to select a variety of performances from great music, funny and clean comedy and even some theatre at the Pub.
enjoy some excellent Irish tunes courtesy of Mike Donahue and Third Man Out. In 2014, the Firehouse Cultural Center added Comedy shows to its line-up of performances. The comedians who perform are clean and do not use profanity. On Friday, September 21 you can get a good laugh at the Pub's signature Clean Comedy show. This show will feature Juanita Lolita whose Latin flair and hillbilly background have become a crowd favorite. The show will also feature Bill "Bull" Ohse, a national touring comedian who uses
In October, the Pub will feature a full slate of shows including La Lucha with James Suggs on Saturday, October 6. La Lucha is a Tampa Bay based trio of three best friends who hail from three different parts of the world- Columbia, Mexico and the United States. Their music is a diverse mixture of Latin-inspired rhythms with jazz standards, twisted arrangements of pop songs, and original compositions. At this show, they bring special guest James Suggs on trumpet. Ken Loomer Big Band will be the
first show featured matinee on a Sunday this season. They will perform on October 7 at 3 p.m. The Ken Loomer Big Band is a Big Band with 15 musicians. They strive to keep the art of jazz music alive. They perform a combination of original songs as well as songs from the Great American Songbook with music created by jazz icons such as Count Basie and Buddy Rich. In addition to the new Sunday shows, the Firehouse Cultural Center Pub series will feature classical music and theatre performances this season. Advanced tickets to the Firehouse Cultural Center’s Pub series are $18 for members and $23 for non-members. Day of show tickets are $23 for members and $28 for non-members. All evening shows, unless otherwise noted, begin at 7:30 p.m. Matinees will begin at 3 p.m. The Firehouse Cultural Center is a nonprofit visual and performing cultural center which serves the south region of Hillsborough County. They provide quality programming in arts and education for all ages. Keeping Pets Safe When Temperatures Soar
Enter to win a $100 Dining Prize!
By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH
As the temperature rises to extreme levels, ensuring that our pets are able to maintain proper body temperature is extremely important. Keep pets indoors with plenty of fresh water during the hottest times of the day. If your pets must remain outside, make sure they have access to water and shade at all times. Some pet owners have found that filling small children's pools with water for supervised outdoor play will help pets cool off. Fatal Mistakes - No matter how warm the weather gets, it goes without saying- NEVER leave your pet on a parked car. According to reports from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), even on mild days, when outdoor temperatures are 73 degrees F, the temperature inside a car can reach 120 degrees within 30 minutes. Avoiding Heat Stress - Dogs and cats can suffer from heat stress just like people. Very young, old, overweight and short-nosed pets are more susceptible. If your pet has had a previous history of cardiovascular or respiratory disorders, be extremely cautious as well. Healthy pets can have severe reactions to long exposure in the heat or even to short exposure if they are exerting themselves during a walk or run. After dark, animals can still overheat if they are too active. It is not a good idea to take a dog on a run or jog with you in hot weather at any time of the
day or night. Jogging is for people, not dogs, they are not equipped to sweat and let off excess heat the way people can. Telltale Symptoms Some symptoms of heat stress or heat stroke include profuse panting and salivations, staring or an anxious expression, failure to respond to commands, warm dry skin, high fever, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, muscular weakness, collapse and bloody diarrhea. If your pet experiences any of the symptoms, try to reduce the body temperature by gradually immersing the pet’s body in cool water or applying ice packs to his head and neck. Get your pet to a veterinarian immediately after applying the cool water and ice packs. Rapid treatment for shock, brain swelling and other side effects of heat stroke is needed to prevent death and for a better chance of survival. To prevent heat stress in pets: make sure animals have plenty of clean, fresh water at all times; provide proper ventilation and air circulation for animals kept in kennels or pens; make sure your pen has shade cover when outdoors; avoid excessive exercise during hot weather and again, NEVER leave your pets in parked vehicles. Pets depend on us and give us unconditional love, so do your best to keep them cool during the months when weather is the hottest.
Winners will receive $100 in Dine Local Restaurant Certificates! 1. What is the name of the Assignment Editor of the Osprey Observer? 2. What is the headline from one story on page 14?

Did You Know? Most auto accident injuries don’t reveal themselves for days or even weeks after a collision. Studies show that collisions of 5 MPH produce an impact on the neck of 7 - 10 G’s causing whiplash and other injuries, yet there is no physical damage to the vehicle.

Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays- SEPTEMBER 2018
Cheese Pizza * Teddy Bear * Fortune Cookie * Mini Golf * Comic Book Days Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesser-known holidays throughout the year. September brings many things – cooler weather (hopefully), back-toschool routines and babies. Babies? Yes, babies! While some sources state that August is the month with the most births, in fact, September wins this award. According to national data, September 9 -September 20 contains nine of the top 10 birthdays in America. With this being said, it’s only appropriate to celebrate Labor Day, observed every year on the first Monday in September. If you are looking for other random September trivia to impress your friends, September is the only month with the same number of letters in its name as the number of the month: it is the ninth month and has nine letters. If you are looking for random ways to celebrate this month, look no further! Not to sound too cheesy, but let’s start our celebration with National Cheese Pizza day on Wednesday, September 5. Did you know that Americans eat approximately 350 slices of pizza per second? Whether you prefer thin crust, deep dish, or stuffed crust, this is the day for Cheese pizza lovers to unite.
... “Relax ke a we’ll t it.” care of
In the 1800s, the Italians considered pizza to be a meal eaten only by peasants. But, when a famous Baker created a margarita pizza for visiting royalty, they were impressed by the colors of the Italian flag represented by the pizza's white mozzarella cheese, red tomato sauce and green basil. Pizza became popular overnight. Today, pizza is one of the most loved meals in the U.S. and there are
hundreds of different pizzas and toppings, but it all started with the classic cheese pizza. So, if you want to get a ‘pizza-the-action’, maybe consider a trip to one of the many local pizza restaurants in our community, including Rosati’s located at 3437 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Valrico. No matter how you slice it, this day can’t be topped! If you need a cuddle, then National Teddy Bear day on Sunday, September 9 is the day for you. Teddy Bear Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate our most loyal childhood companions. The origin of this day dates back to the early 1900s and its history is connected to an American president. In November 1902, President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt attended a bear hunt. During the hunt, Roosevelt saw a young bear cub, but when news spread that Roosevelt refused to kill the bear, the story

became famous and toy makers were inspired to create the first “Teddy’s Bear." By 1906, the teddy bear enthusiasm spread across the nation. It’s ‘un-bearable’ to think of a child without a faithful teddy bear companion. Consider honoring this American childhood tradition by donating to www.Safetybears4kids.com. Safety Bears 4 Kids is a faith-based compassion mission bringing comfort to abused and neglected children in Hillsborough County by the gift of a handmade teddy bear. If you’re not sure what your future holds in the month of September, you should perhaps consult the nearest fortune cookie. National Fortune Cookie Day is celebrated on Thursday, September 13 and is the perfect excuse to order some kung-pao chicken and pork fried rice. Traditionally, Chinese meals come with fortune cookies - a fun and motivating dessert that has become an essential ending to Chinese dinners nationwide. Maybe you will be encouraged by such things as “A closed mouth gathers no feet” or “If you are afraid to shake the dice, you will never throw a six.” Regardless, you should grab your closest phone and place your order! WITH FLORIDA YARD EXPERT Rainwater Harvesting – Now’s A Good Time! Did you know that we offer triple workshops (rainwater harvesting, composting and microirrigation) nearly every month of the year at our office in Seffner? These educational programs are free to attend, one time only, as a Hillsborough County resident. If you have not attended, think about this: after the rainwater harvesting workshop, you will receive one free rain barrel that staff and Master Gardeners have drilled and spigoted. After composting, you receive a free compost bin, kitchen compost bucket and compost thermometer. After microirrigation, you receive a free microirrigation kit, hose nozzle and rain gauge. But, let’s focus on harvesting rainwater. At the rainwater harvesting workshop, you will learn that a rain barrel is any device that is used to collect rainwater mainly for landscape irrigation. The benefits of capturing rainwater include reductions in potable water use for a landscape, erosion and stormwater runoff. We will explain the reasons why these reductions are important to the environment and each of us along with how to make these reductions happen. Did you know that one inch of rain on a 1,000 square foot roof will yield 623 gallons of water? Yes, that’s hard to believe…until you get your rain barrel home, place it appropriately and the rain falls! With an average annual rainfall of approximately 50 inches, each household can save more than
31,000 gallons a year with sufficient storage capacity. Attendees will learn how to make their own rain barrels, how to set up their barrel at home, the ideal locations with or without gutters and how to create a stable platform/base for their rain barrel. Attendees will also receive information on why an overflow is important and how to create one, how to connect multiple rain barrels and the maintenance needed. Instructions are provided about painting rain barrels, safety considerations and use of products to kill mosquito larvae. Harvested rainwater can be used on ornamental plants but not edibles and this will also be fully explained during the workshop. If you have not attended a rainwater harvesting workshop with us in the past, you may want to consider registering for one now. If you are at our office for one workshop, you may want to attend all three as they are on the same Saturday, back-toback. Pre-registration is required. Check out our website which contains the calendar of events at: http://sfyl.ifas.ufl.edu/hillsborough/up coming-events/. For horticultural assistance, contact the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, 813-744-5519, or visit at 5339 County Road 579, Seffner, FL 33584. We hope to see you at our upcoming workshops on September 8, October 6 and/or November 3, 2018. Remember to reduce, reuse, recycle and repeat.

Just a reminder of crosswalk and pedestrian safety especially in school zones. It is the Florida state law to yield to pedestrians. Crosswalks should be clear of cars to allow pedestrians to cross quickly.
