HCSO Honors Deputy And Welcomes New K9 Morrell To The Team What makes K9 Morrell so special to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO)? It’s in the name! Although K9 Morrell is just a puppy, he has a big role to fill on team HCSO. Not only is he the youngest patrol dog on the DUI team eventually integrating with the SWAT Team, but also this energetic puppy carries on a legacy as the namesake for the beloved Deputy Larry Morrell. Master Deputy Brian Pulido and Deputy Morrell spent eight years together on the DUI squad. Master Deputy Pulido proudly said, “Sheriff Chronister let me not only choose a name for this K9, but also gave me the honor of selecting him. That is just the close family environment Sheriff Chronister creates in this department.” K9 Morrell and Master Deputy Pulido are together 24/7 training, getting to know each other and building trust. “When comparing similarities, Deputy Morrell and K-9 Morrell both have a big heart and commitment to the service,” added Pulido. K9 Morrell is a Belgian Malinois born August 14, 2017. He joined the team in late August and will continue training to achieve his Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Certification at the end of October. YMCA Hosts Successful Sold Out Mother-Son Nerf Ninja Night

The Campo Family YMCA hosted Mother and Son Nerf and Ninjas night to a sold out crowd last month.
On a Saturday night last month, the Campo Family YMCA in Valrico was overrun by nerf gun wielding ninjas. And their moms. The YMCA hosted its first Mother and Son Nerf and Ninjas night on Saturday, September 8 to a sold out crowd of 112 mother-son groups with children ranging from 5-12 years old. “We are always looking for new and innovative ways to bring families together and we couldn’t be happier with the turnout and success of this event,” said Campo Center Executive Director Jarrod Williams. Participants navigated a Ninja Course, battled in several rounds of Nerf Wars, made Ninja-themed crafts and refueled with snacks and refreshments. Children were divided by age and rotated between three stations and moms were encouraged to participate, especially in the nerf battles. “I recommend this event to anyone who wants to have fun,” said 10year-old FishHawk resident Will Olver, who attended the event with his mom and brother. “It was all fun,
but the best part was definitely shooting my mom.” T-shirts were available for purchase and the YMCA provided all nerf bullets for the event. “Our plan is to make this an annual event that mothers and sons alike can look forward to,” said Williams. “We are going to debrief, collect feedback and discuss ways to make Nerf and Ninja Night bigger and better. If anyone has any ideas, we would love to hear them.” Six-year-old Gunner Olver offered his feedback, which was only positive. “I loved the ninja course,” he said. “I wish I could do it

Brandon Group Wins $10,000 Donation To Help Children Learn Through Music

A Brandon area nonprofit charity believes that learning music gives children a head start in life and thanks to a recent donation from a Tampa company, they can now bring their gift to more students than ever. Insurance and Trust (IAT) earned a 2018 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award for volunteer work bringing music to disadvantaged children with Instruments of Change, a public 501(c)3 based in Brandon. The award included a $5,000 donation to the charity from Safeco Insurance, which was doubled to $10,000 thanks to an active social media

Change currently serves five elementary schools in Hillsborough County by providing musical instruments and instruction to
students. “Fifth graders at participating schools must sign a contract which obligates them to care for the instrument they are given, practice in preparation for performances and be held accountable to other students in the section,” said Jordan. “Upon successful completion of the contract and verified enrollment in a middle school band program, they receive their instrument for middle school.”

C.A.T.E. Foundation Announces Family Fun & Community Day Looking for something enjoyable to do with the entire family, but don’t want to be outside during the dog days of summer? The C.A.T.E. Foundation is excited to announce its first annual Family Fun and Community Day at E.G. Simmons Park on October 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. Just in time for fall in Florida! This event offers something for the entire family with free activities for children. Kids will spend hours as they jump through bouncy houses, have their faces painted, and hurl water balloons at each other. When ready for a rest, they can ask for a balloon animal from a friendly clown or watch a magic show. Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementia's gradually diminish a person’s ability to communicate. Communication with a person with dementia requires patience, understanding, and good listening skills. Changes in the ability to communicate can vary, and are based on the person and where he or she is in the disease process. Problems you can expect to see throughout the progression of the disease include: difficulty finding the right words, using familiar words frequently, easily losing a train of thought, difficulty organizing words logically, or speaking less often. Understanding how to connect and communicate effectively with our loved ones experiencing dementia is very important, and can add quality to the relationship. Some helpful tips include: • Avoid distractions. This allows your loved one to focus all their mental energy on the conversation.
• Speak clearly and naturally in a warm and calm voice. Refrain from “talking down” to someone with dementia, or any other type of condescension. • Talk about one thing at a time. This will facilitate understanding. • Listen actively. If you don’t understand something your loved one is telling you, politely let them know. • Have patience. Someone with dementia needs extra time to process what you say. If you ask a question, allow time to respond. • Understand that there will good days and bad. While the general trend of dementia is a downward decline, those with dementia will have ups and downs just like anyone else. Twin Lakes Presents Its 9th Annual Art In The Park This October

Everyone is welcome to come to Zenia Park in the community of Twin Lakes in Valrico as they host the 9th Art in the Park on Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Twin Lakes in Valrico will host its Ninth Annual Art In The Park on Saturday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Art in the Park is set to take place in the beautiful Zenia Park, home of gigantic and beautiful old oak trees. Twin Lakes is located east of Lithia Pinecrest Rd. at the end of Bloomingdale Ave. The event is open and free to the community. Both artists and vendors of all kinds are encouraged to attend and share their creativity with the community. Artists and vendors can set up space anywhere within the 11-acre park. A fee of $10 is charged to nonresidents to offset the cost of hosting the arts event. However, there is no charge for Twin Lakes residents. Vendors must bring all of their supplies, including table, chairs and tent
(not required). Electricity is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. This is a great bargain for artists and vendors. Joanne Bialas, President of the Twin Lakes of Brandon HOA said, “Last year, we had a food truck and vendors ranging from pallet art and painted wine bottles to Scentsy and Lue La Roe. We wound up with a little over 40 tables out in our beautiful park, and it was a lovely fall day to enjoy the atmosphere. We are hoping to have the same or more this year. The registrations from artists and vendors keep coming in. Our hope is that everyone who comes out finds a little something to take home.” Bialas added, “We continue to offer all Twin Lakes residents tables at no charge and only $10 to anyone else interested in showcasing their art. This charge helps to cover the cost of the port-o-potty out in the park. The HOA is not trying to make money but provide a venue for all of the residents of Twin Lakes to enjoy. We invite all of the surrounding communities to come out and enjoy the event with us.” Zenia Park is a perfect venue for an art festival of this kind. It is shady and beautiful and filled with oaks that are over 100 years old.

In the eight months since Dr. Jason Watts opened the dental office that shares his name in the FishHawk Health Park, not one customer has left less than a five star review, the number of staff has more than doubled and plans are underway for two additional locations. But despite his hard work, Watts gives the credit to the community for the business’ success. “We are so thankful for the way the FishHawk community has welcomed us,” said Watts, a native of Canada who has been living in Florida since 1996. “People are giving us the opportunity to show them what we offer and our favorite part is that they keep coming back.” A Florida State alumnus who graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine, Watts is active in many organized dentals groups including the American Dental Association and the Florida Dental Association. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesser-known holidays throughout the year. Later, it became the tenth month when January and February were added to the calendar. October is the month we celebrate Columbus Day as well as the everpopular holiday, Halloween. Did you know that Halloween is the second-largest commercial holiday in America? Only Christmas surpasses it in sales. According to the National Retail Federation, consumers spend nearly $7 billion dollars on Halloween decorations, costumes and candy. But, don’t be tricked this October – there are plenty of other holidays worthy of our celebrations! If you don’t have an extra $7 billion dollars, never fear because Saturday, October 6 is Frugal Fun Day. This day

Seniors Invited To Participate In Active Life GamesBy Kate Quesada
Registration is open until September 19 for the Tampa Bay Active Life Games which will take place October 5-19 throughout the county.
Last year hundreds of seniors from all over Hillsborough County participated in events from pickle board to dominos at the annual Tampa Bay Active Life Games. Registration is now underway for this year’s event, which will take place throughout the county from October 5-19. The Olympic-style competition is open to adults 50 and older and is hosted by Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation, the City of Tampa, the City of Temple Terrace and Friends of the County Parks. “This event is very important to us because we have a large constituent of seniors in our area and it is well known that the longer you stay active, the longer you stay healthy,” said Rick Valdez, director of Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation. “There is great talent all around us and every year we find someone new who inspires us.” This year is the 38th annual competition offering a variety of contests for all skill and fitness levels with events ranging from track and field to cycling. Some of the more than two dozen events are qualifiers for state completion. “There is something for every-
one,” said Hillsborough County Commissioner Sandra Murman. “There is even a baking contest.” Registration costs $30 and entrants can compete in as many events as they want. There is an additional $25 charge for those participating in the golf competition, which includes use of a cart. In addition, opening day festivities and the awards luncheon are included with registration. Residents can register on-line and select sports, activities and pay entrance fees until September 19. The registration fee can be paid online with a credit card or PayPal or payment can be mailed. The event, previously known as The Senior Games, is a regional qualifier for the Florida Senior Games which will take place in Clearwater, December 1-9. Residents who participate in the Florida Senior Games can qualify for the National Senior Games which will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June, 2019. Three rare leafy seadragons have been saved thanks to the inventive work of a Florida Aquarium Veterinarian. Dr. Ari Fustukjian handcrafted special prosthetic devices to keep three leafy seadragons alive after realizing the animals had swim bladder problems. The Community Water Wise Awards, sponsored by Tampa Bay Water, a regional municipal water provider, recognize individuals and businesses committed to conserving our water resources and protecting the environment by using Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) principles. There are nine FFL principles which include: right plant right place, water efficiently, fertilize appropriately, mulch, attract wildlife, manage yard pests responsibly, recycle, reduce storm water runoff and protect the waterfront. Many of these principles are used as part of the landscape evaluation process for this award program. The retention of existing trees and vegetation is evaluated, as are landscape design and plant selection. Storm water runoff prevention techniques and use of efficient irrigation techniques are reviewed. Winning landscapes balance attractive design with plants, landscape elements and water efficient irrigation techniques that have a positive impact on our environment. For unincorporated Hillsborough County, the winner of the 2018 Community Water Wise Award is Cynthia Glover. The City of Tampa winner is Melissa Taylor. There are several elements of these landscapes that were positive examples of Florida-Friendly
plants with similar water and maintenance needs, organic and alternative mulch was applied, pervious materials were used for paths, walkways and other areas. Both thrive mainly on rainfall with minimal irrigation, were aesthetically pleasing, beautiful and inviting. As you can see from the photos, these landscapes are water wise and fascinating. The Tampa Theatre Presents A Nightmare On Elm Street Film Series This October The Tampa Theatre will once again hold its annual ‘A Nightmare On Franklin Street’ film festival. This year, according to Jill Witecki with the Tampa Theatre, “We will have 13 nights of fright creeping down Franklin Street this October.” The frightful fun starts on Friday, October 19 and runs through Halloween on Wednesday, October 31. “This year, Tampa’s most historic and most haunted movie palace is pleased to announce an all-new line up of classic horror films, creepy cult favorites; an expanded selection of ‘Mummy & Me’ family friendly films; an evening of live storytelling; more ghost tours than ever before; Halloween happy hours; and a 14-hour marathon of A Nightmare on Elm Street,” explained Witecki. The movies in this year’s line up include the world premiere of Dr. Paul Bearer’s Comedy, Hi Noon, Goodbye Dr. Paul, on Friday, October 19 at 6:30 p.m. This will be followed by a 9:30 p.m. showing of the cult classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. There will be an all-day horror marathon on Saturday, October 20 as all six films in the A Nightmare On Elm Street series is shown beginning at 10 a.m. with the 1984 classic. Other movies in the lineup include
ones for the young fans such as Corpse Bride (Sunday, October 21), Hotel Transylvania (Monday, October 22) and Hocus Pocus (Saturday, October 27). You can also catch other horror classics such as Psycho on Monday, October 22, The Shining on Tuesday, October 30 and the 40th anniversary of Halloween on Wednesday, October 31. In addition to movies, you can go on a Ghosts of Tampa Theatre Tours on select days including a late-night tour on Friday, October 26. Local artist, Shawn Rainey and his wife Paula, are the owners of Brushstrokes, which is an art party that comes to you. Party costs are $30 per participant and $25 for 10 or more participants.
Artist Pablo Picasso once said, “Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” Local artist, Shawn Rainey and Pablo Picasso could be kindred spirits because he too feels art is another way of keeping a diary. “Art gave me the freedom to express my feelings and it became my diary in color,” Rainey said. “I began to paint and quickly learned that I was able to put my emotions into creating art and achieve complete happiness in the creation process.” Rainey found art when he was 10years-old and it became his friend for life. “I had an intense imagination and loved to create,” Rainey said. “I started drawing comic and cartoon characters then got into graffiti as a teen.” After high school, he attended The Center for The Media Arts and studied advertising art and computer graphics but he didn’t pursue a career in this field. “I found that physically using my hands to create art was my true calling.” Rainey and his wife, Paula came up with an idea for their daughters' birthday party. “Both of our girls are very artistic and creative so they wanted something completely different than the usual birthday party themes that are out there,” Rainey said. “So, we decided throw them a painting party and it was a huge success. Many of the people who attended the party suggested that the painting parties would be a great business idea so that is how Brushstrokes was born.” Other similar businesses are tethered to a specific location, but this is different because they come to your event and provide artistic inspiration catered to each individual party. “Whether it be a birthday party or any other special occasion, we provide an
inspiring a unique artistic experience for each celebration,” Rainey said. “Party costs are $30 per participant and $25 for 10 or more participants. Clip & Save: Twelve Ballot Amendments And What They Mean To Voters Registered voters who are voting by mail or at the polls for the upcoming General Election need to know that there are 12 Constitutional Amendment Proposals on this year's ballot. This is the longest list in decades. One amendment (8) was struck down by the Florida Supreme Court. Voters should carefully read each amendment. Some of the amendments (1-5) were proposed by the Legislature or by citizen initiative. The remaining (7, 913) come from the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC). which meets every 20 years and is allowed to bundle more than one issue into each proposed amendment. To be approved, a constitutional amendment must receive 60 percent of the vote. Summary of the amendments.
Amendment 1- Increased Homestead Property Tax Exemption
This would raise the portion of a home's value that can be exempted from non-school property taxes. The change would apply to the assessed value of a homestead property between $100,000 and $125,000. This would increase the maximum exemption to $75,000.
Amendment 2- Limitations On Property Tax Assessments
Essentially, this would make permanent a temporary cap of 10 percent on annual property value increases. This applies to non-homestead properties.
Amendment 3- Voter Control Of Gambling In Florida
This amendment would give voters the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize expansions of casino gambling. Currently, the authority rests with both the Legislature and voters.
Amendment 4- Voting Restoration For Individuals With Felony Convictions
California’s Marsy’s Law. It would raise the age for retirement of judges to 75, and it would bar judges from relying on administrative agencies’ interpretations of a law when ruling in cases.
Amendment 7- First Responder And Military Member Survivor Benefits; Public Colleges And Universities
This proposal would restore the right to vote to nearly 1.4 million Floridians who have served their sentences. This amendment does not apply to felony convictions for murder or sexual offenses. Florida is one of four states that continues to limit the rights of citizens to vote. The law dates back to the Civil War.
This is two items. The first would provide college tuition for the survivors of first responders and military members killed on duty. The second would require university trustees to agree by a two-thirds supermajority to raise college fees (not including tuition) and establish the state college system in the Constitution. Universities are in it, but state colleges (i.e., community colleges) are not.
Amendment 5- Increase To Two-Thirds Vote Needed In Legislature To Increase Taxes
Amendment 9- Prohibits Offshore Oil And Gas Drilling; Prohibits Vaping In Enclosed Indoor Workplaces
Currently, a simple majority is needed. This increase could affect the state in times of emergencies such as a hurricane or recession and could hamper the Legislature's ability to pass a reasonable budget which is their yearly mandate.
Amendment 6- Rights Of Crime Victims, Judges
This amendment is three items. It would add a list of rights for crime vicims which is modeled after

Amendment 11- Property Rights; Removal Of Obsolete Provisions; Criminal Statutes
Repeals the state’s ability to prohibit noncitizens from buying, owning and selling property; deletes a provision that forces the state to prosecute criminal suspects under the law they were originally charged under, even if the Legislature changes that law; deletes obsolete language having to do with high-speed rail in Florida (voters repealed this section in 2004).
Amendment 12- Lobbying And Abuse Of Office By Public Officers
This expands the time from two years to six years that elected officials and government employees have to wait before they could lobby state government.

Hillsborough Voters To Decide Transportation Future In November

All for Transportation, the citizen-led effort to support increased local funding for roads and transportation, has exceeded the 49,000 petition threshold required by law to secure a place on the November ballot, according to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. “This is a historic moment. More than 70,000 thousand people in Hillsborough County have put a solution that funds transportation problems in front of their neighbors. We’ve waited far too long to solve a transportation crisis in Hillsborough County that is getting worse every day,” said Tyler Hudson, All for Transportation Chair. All for Transportation is a community led effort organized to fund a wide range of solutions to address our County’s greatest shortcoming – traffic congestion and lack of transit options – and allow us to invest in our community. “Without enough funding for transportation, the traffic where I live in Brandon continues to get worse. Plus, Hillsborough County’s population is expected to grow by more than 700,000 people over the next thirty years. That’s why my neighbors and thousands of people from all over Hillsborough County signed the petition,” said All for Transportation volunteer Rena Upshaw Frazier, “The people have made it clear
they won’t wait and they will be ready to vote ‘yes’ to fund transportation in November.” If approved by a majority of voters in November, the All for Transportation proposal would fund transportation improvements throughout Hillsborough County including Tampa, Plant City, Temple Terrace, Brandon, Town n’ Country, and Sun City. “Improvements would include improved roads and bridges, expanded public transit options, fixing potholes, enhanced bus service, relieving rush hour bottlenecks, improved intersections, and making walking and biking safer,” added Hudson. “All of these funds will be reviewed by an independent oversight committee and audited annually to make sure the funds are used as outlined in the plan that voters signed and will vote on in November.” “I’m happy to be one of the Hillsborough voters that signed.
