Multi-Church Outreach Shares Gospel To Thousands Of Homes

Trunk or Treats & Fall Activities Page 15

With the goal to reach every home in the Tampa Bay area, local church members from differing denominations are venturing into neighborhoods to distribute the Jesus Film DVD, a gospel tract and a letter with information about their church. Churches from the counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk and Pasco have adopted zip codes in their area and will go door to door hanging these ‘saturation packs’ on the doorknob of about 900,000 residences. Mike Kahn, Director of Missions, Tampa Bay Baptist Association said, “We are asking God to save tens of thousands of people who watch one of the 900,000 Jesus Film DVDs that believers will be distributing to residences throughout our region in the next few months.” Saturate Tampa Bay is an extension of the evangelistic outreach,

with likeminded churches and make a concentrated impact in neighborhoods throughout Tampa Bay in a relatively short period of time,” said Dr. Stephen Rummage, senior pastor of Bell Shoals Baptist Church in Brandon. The timetable for the outreach is September through November. The church chooses a date that works best and assembles its team. The ‘saturation’ material is free due to a generous donor, and a team of 25 people can deliver about 5,000 packs in four hours. Dr. Rummage continued, “The gospel message applies to everyone, regardless of race or ethnicity, income or education level. Saturate Tampa Bay will allow us to put hands and feet to that truth.” To find out more information or to sign up, visit www.saturatetampabay.org. Bell Shoals Baptist Church has been ministering to the Brandon community for more than 50 years. The church’s influence has expanded into other areas with campuses in Apollo Beach, Tampa and Riverview, along with the addition of a Hispanic congregation to its Brandon campus. With approximately 8,000 members distributed among the different locations, Bell Shoals Baptist Church remains united as one church under the headship of Jesus Christ. In order to keep pace with the recent growth in Riverview, the Bell Shoals Baptist’s Riverview campus is relocating from Sessums Elementary School to a permanent facility. The first Sunday service in the new building is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, October 6. The new location is at 9990 South US Hwy 301, Suite 10024 and is only a few miles from the school. With a mission to follow Jesus, love people and make disciples, the new facility provides greater visibly and accessibility to care for the needs of the Riverview community. Bell Shoals Baptist’s Senior Pastor, Dr. Stephen Rummage, said, “With the growth of the Riverview area we needed to find a space that we could use to minister to the community throughout the week.”

Pastor Kyle Norton is the pastor of Bell Shoals Baptist at Riverview campus and is pictured with his family.

Dr. Rummage continued, “I am hopeful that this facility will help us make an even stronger connection with those living in Riverview in the days to come.”

An official grand opening celebration is planned at the new location for Sunday, November 4. The free family event is open to the community and will feature food, games and more. “This new facility is a sign of our commitment to the Riverview community to continue to provide the life-changing truth of the gospel,” said Kyle Norton, pastor of Bell Shoals Baptist Church at Riverview Campus. “We do this by offering a welcoming community, loving relationships and relevant and truthful teaching from the Bible.” Pastor Norton said that first-time visitors would experience a casual, band-driven service at 11 a.m. with LIFE groups (small Bible study groups) beginning at 9:30 a.m. for all ages. “Though we are excited about moving to our new facility, we are extremely grateful for Sessums Elementary School and the blessing they have been to us for almost two years in hosting us as a campus,” said Pastor Norton. Grace Notes Why Creeks Dance

By Debora Coty

Because the Lord has called me to write about the red-hot topic of stress, I get lots of feedback from readers of my Too Blessed to be Stressed books. I consider it a privilege – and a responsibility I take very seriously – when I get messages requesting prayer. Letters come from many cultures on many continents in many languages. Yet they contain common words and phrases like: frustration, anger, out-of-control, my soul is weary, I’ve lost myself, feel hopeless. My heart melts within me when I receive these raw, aching pleas for help in dealing with major obstacles in someone’s life. Obstacles much like the rocks in a creek. Despite the rocks that block the easiest path down the mountain, the water somehow finds a way. Over, around, sometimes even through fissures in the rocks that form walls, still the creek bubbles forward. So how can we, like the dancing creek waters, overcome the obstacles blocking our path? Papa God gives us an example in the Old Testament prophet Nehemiah, who faced a rock wall (literally) of disappointment and found a way to conquer it. Nehemiah knew discouragement. He was tasked with repairing a decrepit city wall with no material, time or help. Despite horrendous obstacles, he prayed, developed a plan, and conquered his wall.

Turn to the book of Nehemiah with me, where we can learn a lot about dealing with discouragement: Tears are okay. “I sat down and wept … for days” (1:4). Weeping and mourning are natural, healthy reactions to disappointment. But we mustn’t languish there. Fatigue weakens our resolve (4:2123). When we’re exhausted, it’s easy to quit. Take regular rest breaks and fun frolics. Schedule something fun. Refresh yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually so your resolve stays strong. Frustration rises as rubbish accumulates (4:10). Clutter in our lives needs to be addressed and removed, not tiptoed around. Feelings of failure diminish hope (4:13). If we lose hope, we also lose joy, peace, and our heart-connection with Jesus. To counteract, we must change the way we see, think, and speak. Yesterday’s failure doesn’t dictate tomorrow’s. Step away and pray to gain perspective. Yep, getting around the rocks often takes diligence and perseverance. We’re all up the creek at one time or another. Who in your life might be stuck behind a rock wall of discouragement today? How can you help?

Mary Magdalene -Jesus’ Faithful Friend And Disciple

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Mary was one of the first persons that Jesus appeared to after He was resurrected. She received the Great Commission to tell the world that she had seen Jesus.

Throughout the Bible, there are many stories of strong and heroic women. In this series, we explore a story of a faithful, biblical woman each month. With their strong faith, the women of the Bible continue to teach us how to live authentic, faith-filled lives. No matter what our circumstances are, we can find ourselves in their stories. Mary Magdalene is one of the many Marys mentioned throughout the Bible. This has caused much confusion and speculation about who Mary Magdalene really was. Her last name was derived from her hometown of Magdala, which was a small fishing village close to Nazareth and Cana, a region that was regularly visited by Jesus. Mary met Jesus when He cured her of a severe illness. Although historians often characterize her as being a prostitute as well as mentally ill, she is described in Scripture as a devoted follower and companion of Jesus. All four Gospels in the New Testament tell of her faithful discipleship. She became the leader of a group of women who traveled with Jesus and supported Him financially. Mary Magdalene’s person demonstrates that women were significant in the discipleship of Jesus and the spread of the gospel. The early church, which came to be dominated by men, tended to downplay the role

of women. Mary Magdalene was with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, and unlike many of the other male disciples, she did not flee when Jesus was arrested. She stood by Jesus during his trial, and she stood near the cross, despite the danger of being present at His crucifixion. It was after the crucifixion that one of the most significant events unfolded before Mary Magdalene. After Jesus’ death, Mary did not have the necessary burial spices to prepare His body for burial, and she was required to wait until the Sabbath was over to purchase the spices. She gathered the supplies and went to His tomb, but she found it empty. She was weeping when the risen Jesus appeared before her and told her to go forth and spread the word that He was raised from the dead. With these words, Mary was commissioned as an apostle of Jesus. The fact she was the first witness to his resurrection is significant because, at the time, women generally were not considered reliable as witnesses. Mary Magdalene is often referred to as the ‘apostle to the apostles’ by the Eastern Catholic churches and has been one of the most revered figures in Christian history. Mary is a role model for women in the church to serve Christ faithfully, regardless of social status. Jesus blesses those who are faithful to Him.

Sunrise Homes Celebrates 35 Years Of Local Quality Building Sunrise Homes designed and constructed its first home in 1983. From these humble beginnings, it has created a solid reputation as a semi-custom homebuilder adept at listening to the needs and wants of today’s intelligent homebuyers. With more than 3,500 homes built in Eastern Hillsborough County to date, its success comes from the ability to adapt to the ever-evolving needs of discriminating local buyers. Executive Vice President Bob Appleyard said the company does not follow national trends, choosing instead to focus on what is important to the local homebuyer. “What is trending in California or Texas might not be what is trending in Hillsborough County, Florida,” he said. Still popular is the open concept layout with large communal spaces, but adults are now seeking private spaces where they can capture a moment of sanctuary. “Adults are finding that important so we have listened and built zones where they can find quiet and privacy,” he said. “Our homes are all about livability for everyone in the family.” When the company sees an opportunity to flex its creative muscles, it doesn’t hesitate to show homebuyers what is possible.

Although one constant has been serving the single-family luxury homebuyer, Sunrise Homes is versatile in its output. Live Like You Mean It Truth Counts More than Being Right By Kelly Wise Valdes There are countless cathedrals and churches throughout France, but the Basilica of NotreDame de Fourviere is thought to be one of the most beautiful. This stunning church is built upon a tall hill in Lyon, France and provides visitors with an unrestricted view of the city. Lyon is located four hours south of Paris. Construction of the Basilica began with private funding, and the construction site took place on top of ancient Roman ruins. Work on the Basilica started in 1872 and was finally completed in 1884. However, finishing touches in the interior were not completed until as late as 1964. The church was built and dedicated to the Virgin Mary who is credited for saving Lyon from the Black Death plague that swept through Europe in 1643. Every year on the December 8, the town pays homage to the Virgin Mary by lighting candles throughout the city and illuminating walls and buildings of the Basilica in a LED extravaganza referred to as the Festival of Lights. Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere contains two churches, one on top of the other. The upper sanctuary is very ornate, while the lower is a

much simpler design. The basilica is often referred to by the locals as ‘the upside-down elephant’ because the building resembles the body of an elephant and the towers look like its legs. These ‘legs’ are four large towers, each measuring 14 stories tall. The gilded Virgin Mary that sits at the top of the bell tower is said to continue to ward off any dangers posed to the city of Lyon. The entrance to the basilica is ornate and leads into the nave that displays colorful, golden mosaics. The inside of the building is breathtaking and ornately detailed as well. Adjoining the basilica is the ancient Chapel of the Virgin and a terrace that provides a panoramic view of the cathedral and city of Lyon. Climbing the 287 steps to the basilica observatory will provide a 180-degree view of Lyon and its suburbs. On a clear day, Mont Blanc, the highest point in Europe, can be seen in the distance. Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourviere offers guided tours and contains a Museum of Sacred Art. More than two million people visit the basilica each year. For more information, visit www.fourviere.org/en/practicalinformation.

By Derek Maul I recently went shopping with my mother but couldn’t find what she needed. “Let’s ask,” she said. “Don’t bother,” I said, looking up from my phone, “I just now bought it on Amazon.” The item arrived the next morning after breakfast. Then our old television died so we replaced it with a ‘smart’ one. Now I can shop Amazon in 43-inch High Definition. My printer tells Hewlett Packard when I’m low on ink so they can send me refills. I read the newspaper on my iPad (which also knows where my phone is even when I don’t) and I’m pretty sure Google has been talking to my Facebook app behind my back. I asked our new friend Alexa what I should do about it all but she was no help at all. I’m torn because I’m in the business of sharing light, inspiration, encouragement, hope, and meaning – yet the media that gets my message out is more commonly used to spread darkness, division, discouragement, disillusion, hate, and confusion. These devices may have been invented to bring us together but the effect is quite the opposite. I’m concerned at how readily communication

technology is used to divide and how easily people allow themselves to be manipulated by what they are exposed to. I asked Alexa about truth, and this time the answer was useful. “Truth,” Alexa said,”is fact that has been verified. Or conformity to reality.” The best starting place – if we want to move closer together – would be to be more interested in truth than in being right, and in verification before we share. I am beyond tired of witnessing people swallow flat-out fabrications whole and without checking – simply because of the views they already hold. So encourage me, friends, by honing your reliability skills. And encourage one another with a little more accountability now and then. I believe this country is worth it. Derek Maul has written for many news outlets, including the Tampa Tribune, The United Methodist News Service, All Pro Dad, FOCUS Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, Presbyterians Today, Guideposts, Chicken Soup for the Soul and many other publications. Finding Your Strength And Dignity

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Proverbs 21:35 tells us, "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future." We all feel weak sometimes, and many women think they are not living the life God intended. But, sometimes when we are at our most vulnerable is when God reveals Himself. To live fully and abundantly is certainly possible, although we may not feel that way when you are late picking up the kids from school, or forgot to pick up the dry cleaning, or missed a deadline at work. It’s tough being a wife, mom, employee and friend. But, you are not alone. Many female Christian authors have written about their experiences and offer hope and advice to other Christian women trying to live a meaningful and faithful life.

Orange Tour Travels To 17 Cities Across The US This Fall

New York Giant Odell Beckham, Jr. Shares His Gratitude For Christ

Orange Tour 2018 is set to hit the road, making its way to 17 cities nationwide this fall. This training event for church leaders, volunteers and parents will celebrate a decade of equipping and inspiring those who lead the next generation on their faith journey. This year's theme, 'We Can Do More Together,' is a timely message that will empower attendees with a strategy to make the most of their combined influences. From weekly church activities to annual church events to everyday life at home, Orange Tour will help all those who speak into the life of a child leave a lasting legacy of faith and character. When teams experience fresh insights and new ideas together, it creates a synergy that lasts through the entire year. That's why Orange Tour is perfect for every member of a ministry team— preschool, children's, student, NextGen/family ministers and senior pastors, as well as volunteers.

On Sunday, September 9, New York Football Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. fell to his knees in prayer at MetLife Stadium before millions of

#ImForgiven.” Since then Beckham has posted several photos with captions voicing his love and gratitude for God. That Sunday Beckham played in his first game since breaking his ankle last October, and the player decided to capture the moment with a series of Instagram posts. Instead of posting a photo of himself while playing, Beckham took the opportunity to give glory to God. The wide receiver posted a photo of himself on his knees praying and captioned it, "Lord, I come to you at this time... not to ask you for anything... but just to say Thank You."

fans. Beckham recently took to Instagram to share with his 11.5 million followers that he dedicated his life to Jesus. In July, Beckham was on a trip to Israel when he decided to be baptized. The wide receiver shared a photo of the experience captioning it, “FRESH START…What a time! #Jerusalem

Mark Wahlberg, Hollywood’s highest paid actor in 2017, undertook an intense daily routine to prepare for his role in the upcoming film Mile 22. However, prayer has been central in his life for several years. In 2010, Wahlberg told the Catholic Herald that “Being a Catholic is the most important aspect of my life.” Then he added, “The first thing I do when I start my day is, I get down on my hands and knees and give thanks to God. Whenever I go outside of my house, the first thing I do is stop at the church. The kids will be mad with me. ‘Daddy! It

takes too long!’ I’m saying: ‘It’s only 10 minutes and this is something I really need to do.’ Because I do. If I can start my day out by saying my prayers and

getting myself focused, then I know I’m doing the right thing. That 10 minute,s helps me in every way throughout the day.” Wahlberg has also expressed regret over some of the roles he played earlier in his career. He also said he does not pray so that he can have success but focuses his prayer time on his wife, his four children, and his character. “For me to sit down and ask for material things is ridiculous. It’s a much bigger picture than that. I want to serve God and to be a good human being and to make up for the mistakes I made and the pain I put people through. That’s what I’m praying for, and I recommend it to anybody.”

Clip & Save: Twelve Ballot Amendments And What They Mean To Voters Registered voters who are voting by mail or at the polls for the upcoming General Election need to know that there are 12 Constitutional Amendment Proposals on this year's ballot. This is the longest list in decades. One amendment (8) was struck down by the Florida Supreme Court. Voters should carefully read each amendment. Some of the amendments (1-5) were proposed by the Legislature or by citizen initiative. The remaining (7, 913) come from the Florida Constitution Revision Commission (CRC). The CRC meets every 20 years and is allowed to bundle more than one issue into each proposed amendment. Conversely, amendments proposed by citizen initiatives or the Legislature must contain just one question. To be approved, a constitutional amendment must receive 60 percent of the vote. Here is a summary of the amendments.

Amendment 1- Increased Homestead Property Tax Exemption

This would raise the portion of a home's value that can be exempted from non-school property taxes. The change would apply to the assessed value of a homestead property between $100,000 and $125,000. This would increase the maximum exemption to $75,000.

Amendment 2- Limitations on Property Tax Assessments

Essentially, this would make permanent a temporary cap of 10 percent on

annual property value increases. This applies to non-homestead properties.

Amendment 3Voter Control of Gambling in Florida

This amendment would give voters the exclusive right to decide whether to authorize expansions of casino gambling. Currently, the authority rests with both the Legislature and voters.

Amendment 4- Voting Restoration For Individuals With Felony Convictions

This proposal would restore the right to vote to nearly 1.4 million Floridians who have served their sentences. This amendment does not apply to felony convictions for murder or sexual offenses. Florida is one of four states that continues to limit the rights of citizens to vote. The law dates back to the Civil War.

Amendment 5- Increase To TwoThirds Vote Needed In Legislature To Increase Taxes

Currently, a simple majority is needed. This increase could affect the state in times of emergencies such as a hurricane or recession and could hamper the Legislature's ability to pass a reasonable budget which is their yearly mandate.

Amendment 6- Rights of Crime Victims, Judges

This amendment is three items. It would add a list of rights for crime vicims which is modeled after California’s Marsy’s Law. It would raise the age for retirement of judges to 75, and it would bar judges from relying on administrative agencies’ interpretations of a law when ruling in cases.

Amendment 7- First Responder and Military Member Survivor Benefits; Public Colleges and Universities

This is two items. The first would provide college tuition for the survivors of first responders and military members killed on duty. The second would require university trustees to agree by a two-thirds super-majority to raise college fees (not including tuition) and establish the state college system in the Constitution. Universities are in it, but state colleges (i.e., community colleges) are not.

Amendment 9- Prohibits Offshore Oil and Gas Drilling; Prohibits Vaping In Enclosed Indoor Workplaces This calls for a ban on oil and gas drilling in state-owned waters and a proposal to add vaping to the ban on smoking indoors.

Amendment 10- State and Local Government Structure and Operation This is four items. One is to have the legislative session start in January rather than March in even-numbered years (the legislature currently changes its dates by

By Kathy Collins

statute), two is to create a counter-terrorism office (FDLE is already the lead agency), three is to make the state veterans affairs department constitutionally required (there is a provision in the Constitution), and four requires that five county-level offices (tax collector, property appraiser, supervisor of elections, sheriff and clerk of circuit court) be elected. In Hillsborough County, these are already elected offices.

Amendment 11- Property Rights; Removal of Obsolete Provisions; Criminal Statutes

Repeals the state’s ability to prohibit non-citizens from buying, owning and selling property; deletes a provision that forces the state to prosecute criminal suspects under the law they were originally charged under, even if the Legislature changes that law; deletes obsolete language having to do with high-speed rail in Florida (voters repealed this section in 2004).

Amendment 12- Lobbying and Abuse of Office by Public Officers

This expands the time from two years to six years that elected officials and government employees have to wait before they could lobby state government.

Amendment 13- Ban On Dog Racing

This proposal ends wagering on dog racing by 2020. Vsit http://dos.myflorida.com/elections/.

Hillsborough Voters to Decide Transportation Future in November

By Preston Rudie

All for Transportation, the citizen-led effort to support increased local funding for roads and transportation, has exceeded the 49,000 petition threshold required by law to secure a place on the November ballot, according to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. “This is a historic moment. More than 70,000 thousand people in Hillsborough County have put a solution that funds transportation problems in front of their neighbors. We’ve waited far too long to solve a transportation crisis in Hillsborough County that is getting worse every day,” said Tyler Hudson, All for Transportation Chair. All for Transportation is a community led effort organized to fund a wide range of solutions to address our County’s greatest shortcoming – traffic congestion and lack of transit options – and allow us to invest in our community. “Without enough funding for transportation, the traffic where I live in Brandon continues to get worse. Plus, Hillsborough County’s population is expected to grow by more than 700,000 people over the next thirty years. That’s why my neighbors and thousands of people from all over Hillsborough County signed the petition,” said All for Transportation volunteer Rena Upshaw

Frazier, “The people have made it clear they won’t wait and they will be ready to vote ‘yes’ to fund transportation in November.” If approved by a majority of voters in November, the All for Transportation proposal would fund transportation improvements throughout Hillsborough County including Tampa, Plant City, Temple Terrace, Brandon, Town n’ Country, and Sun City. “Improvements would include improved roads and bridges, expanded public transit options, fixing potholes, enhanced bus service, relieving rush hour bottlenecks, improved intersections, and making walking and biking safer,” added Hudson. “All of these funds will be reviewed by an independent oversight committee and audited annually to make sure the funds are used as outlined in the plan that voters signed and will vote on in November.” “I’m happy to be one of the Hillsborough voters that signed. This gets us one step closer to funding that will make rush hour easier, provide us more transit options and make our streets safe,” said East Tampa resident Gwen Myers. “I believe people will vote yes in November, because the funding has clear oversight to make sure it’s spent on the community’s priorities.” To learn more about All for Transportation, visit AllforTransportation.com.
