Bikes For Christ puts bicycles and Bibles into the hands of those less fortunate. Founded in 2016 by local resident Patrick (Pat) Simmons, the nonprofit serves the homeless, veterans, seniors and underprivileged children. Pairing his passions for cycling and helping others, Simmons said, "I want to do this the rest of my life, providing transportation for those in need and sharing the Gospel." The recipients are striving to better their situation, and bikes provide a mode of transportation to employment, doctor appointments and more. Along with every bicycle distributed, a Bible or some other scriptural text is given to remind them that God loves and cares for them. Bikes For Christ accepts bicycles from the counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk and Pasco and then redistributes them through several different agencies. The organization also welcomes monetary donations, as the majority of donated bikes require maintenance, and parts are needed for repairs. With Christmas rapidly approaching, the focus is predominately on providing bicycles for underprivileged children. This holiday season will be a bit busier for Simmons as he will also be delivering bikes to children living in the Panhandle’s Bay County in mid-December. For 38 years, Officer Mike Jones, also known as ‘Salvage Santa,’ has been repairing and gifting bikes to less fortunate children in Bay County.

“It is expected to attract events in the booming youth and amateur sports market as well as top adult and senior athletic competitions, bringing thousands of visitors to the area,” said Van Dyke. The first major tournament, the United States Flag and Touch Football League’s National Championships, is scheduled for January 18-20, 2019. Each field features professionally maintained Celebration Bermudagrass while the SportsPlex offers wireless internet access throughout, high-tech LED lightning which will also cut energy consumption by up to 65 percent and a robotic field striper that uses GPS to automatically line the fields. There is also a championship field with bleacher seating, adjacent to a 35,000 sq. ft. vendor village area for celebrations and sales. The SportsComplex is located at 9330 E. Columbus Dr. in Tampa. Hillsborough County officials and guests gathered on November 1 for a sneak peak of the new $17 million SportsComplex which will host its first tournament in January.
The Brandon area will soon be home to one of the country’s most state-of-the-art sports facilities. The Hillsborough County Tournament SportsPlex, located on Columbus Dr. between U.S. Hwy. 301 and Falkenburg Rd., is home to 15 fields that will be used for a variety of sports starting in January. County representatives gathered earlier this month to celebrate the opening of the complex, expected to draw championship-level athletic events with teams from all over the country. “The 65-acre facility can be configured for a variety of sports, including soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, cricket, ultimate (played with a flying disc) and field hockey,” said Hillsborough County Communications and Digital Media Representative Michelle Van Dyke. The $17 million SportsPlex is a partnership between Hillsborough County, the Tampa Sports Authority and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. “Hillsborough County is building and will own the facility, which will be man-

By Amanda Boston Unfortunately, Salvage Santa’s house and workshop were devastated after Hurricane Michael hit the Panhandle on October 10. After learning about Jones’ plight, Simmons decided to collect and deliver bikes to Bay County to ensure that Salvage Santa’s Christmas mission continues. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Bikes For Christ on November 8 at the Valrico/FishHawk Chamber of Commerce. "I was extremely happy with the turn out we had for the ribbon cutting,” said Simmons. “Not only were people excited about the overall work that we do, but business owners really stepped up to offer their locations as drop off points for our holiday drive for bikes both here for the work we do in our area and to take to the Panhandle for the Salvage Santa project." Bikes For Christ is always accepting roadworthy bikes and monetary donations. If you would like to donate, please visit www.Bikes4Christ.com/donations or call 533-9177.

The Osprey Observer staff recently got to enjoy learning about tea blends and the health benefits while also enjoying lunch at TBD@301.
Recently the staff at the Osprey Observer was invited to visit TBD@301, a new café. This gem, which stands for Tea, Bowls and Desserts, stands tucked away in a shopping center at 3840 US Hwy. 301 S. in Riverview (across from the Publix plaza). This new business is well worth the stop, and once you do, you will want to return again and again. The owners, Isabella Rosal and her husband Jerwin, along with his brother JP Rosal, founded TBD@301 to create an impact on the human food experience, embracing diversity, creativity and fun at the same time. Dylan Chadwell, TBD@301’s tea guru, hosted a tea class for us. An expert at blending teas, he helped us decide what ingredients to include in our individually created blends. We learned what positive effects the different types of herbs offered. All of the teas are organic. “We pledge to bring tea lovers an exceptional experience with the best loose leaf teas nature has to offer, by sourcing the highest quality teas with passion and integrity," said Chadwell. Tea blending classes take place once a month, usually on the third Saturday of the month, online or instore. Take home your self-blended flavor for the day. The fee includes your kit comprising of your tea (2 oz.), mixing kit, manual/instructions and tea bags. The fee is $35 per person. Group rates are available for a minimum of seven people. Visit the café or www.tbdcafe.com/events to sign up. Many tea blends are available for purchase as well as offered on the menu. Be sure to include some Bobo (tapioca balls) in your tea. The most popular teas served are the Lychee Dragon and Thai teas. The in-house chef, Maria
cooked and made in-house. It is the Monday special. It was my first time trying this and the flavors worked amazingly well together. Don’t forget dessert. If you are too full after the meal, take some home with you. For something different, try the Matcha Green Tea Cheesecake. Gluten free cheesecakes and edible cookie dough are available. A fan of the Paradise Oolong Tea with Boba, Melissa Hartmann returns often. She said, “It’s nice to have a nice refreshing lunch and be able to go back to work energized.” It is not just the food and drinks. According to Isabella, “Team TBD is constantly making efforts to implement ways to contribute to a better community.” The staff wants to make sure you get what you deserve, in the most economical, efficient and sustainable way possible. Five cents from each cup sold goes to g3 life applications. As a member of the responsiblecafe.org, a 20 cent discount is given if you use your own cup. Can’t get out for a meal? Delivery services are available through Grubhub, DoorDash and Uber Eats. Hours are Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Call 4200013 or visit www.tbdcafe.com.

Civil War Veterans Honored With New Memorial
By Kate Quesada
Veterans killed in action during the Civil War and Florida naval casualties from 1861 to 1865 are inscribed on the monuments. The monuments are part of the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park and Museum which was established to provide a centralized location for residents to honor veterans of all eras. Additional war Hillsborough County dedicated a memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa last month to those who fought in the Civil War.
A new group of the nation’s finest are now represented at Hillsborough County’s Veterans Memorial Park and Museum. Last month, Hillsborough County dedicated a memorial to veterans killed during the Civil War. According to Hillsborough County Media Representative Todd Pratt, soldiers on both sides of the war are historically represented and honored at the memorial. “The two gray granite monuments that make up the memorial represent the west and east sides of the Hillsborough River; the blue marble strip between the monuments represents the river,” said Pratt. Kim’s Natural Pet Foods Helps Give Your Pets A Healthy Diet
By Nick Nahas
Photos courtesy of Kim Albright
Kim’s Natural Pet Foods has been open for about five years.
Kim Albright has a love for animals. The owner of Kim’s Natural Pet Foods in Valrico has eight dogs and three cats of her own. She originally worked at the store for eight years for the former owner when it was called Bloomingdale Pet Supply. It had been a feed store that specialized in horses for over 40 years. The store had shut down, prompting customers to look for Albright, who had been helping them. The landlord of the property then approached Albright about opening up her own store. Albright said that the neighborhood came together and helped her fix up the store before reopening. She sells food for a lot of different small animals, including, but not limited to cats, dogs and now birds as well. Albright recently had customers ask about the possibility of carrying exotic bird feed. She was able to order a shipment from Kentucky and has had 30 customers within a week come in for the feed. She said that nobody else carries this particular feed in Florida. Albright gives pet nutrition advice as well. She has helped dogs with itchy skin and health problems holistically through changes in their diets. She tries to be proactive with a pet’s
nutritional health by feeding them according to their needs. People often bring Albright animals that need a home and she helps find a place for them. When she sees an animal in need, she wants to help them. She always has cats and dogs in her store. She has customers that come in with their kids to play with the cats. She does a lowcost shot clinic once a month on the first Saturday of the month from 2-3 p.m. She also provides preventative meds such as Heartguard and Trifexis. No appointments are necessary. She is also doing a charity drive for St. Francis Animal Rescue for the holiday season. People can buy pet products and place them in a box at the store. Albright credits her store’s success to the fact that people love their pets and they are more conscious of how to take better care of them. “People are happy when you help them with their pets,” Albright said. “Now dogs are in our houses, they are a part of our family, they sleep in our beds. For some people, that’s their companion. I think that we just want to take care of them better, we want to feed them better, we want them to live longer. Times are tough, people want that animal to hug on. They just need that companionship.” Kim’s is located at 3110 Lithia Pinecrest Rd., Brandon. Call 684-3663 or visit www.kimsnaturalpetfoods.com.

County To Start Work On $65 Million Widening Of Bell Shoals Road E. Bloomingdale Ave.
FishHawk Blvd.
Boyette Rd.
Work is expected to begin this month on the much anticipated project to widen Bell Shoals Rd. between Bloomingdale Ave. and Boyette Rd. County representatives spoke to residents about the $65 million project at a public meeting at Bloomingdale High Bell Shoals Road School last month, emphasizing the goals of the project, especially to improve safety and mobility along the heavily traveled 3.1 mile stretch of road. “This project has been 15 years in the making,” said Project Manager Tommy Rawls with the Hillsborough County Public Works Department. “Our number one priority is the safe completion of the project in the most reasonable time frame possible.” According to Rawls, the county is planning to start relocating utilities in the area in the next month while construction companies bid for the widening project. The actual widening is expected to begin in spring 2019. At that time, another public meeting will be scheduled to inform residents of the timeline and specific phases of the project, although current data suggests that the Residents gathered at a public meeting at Bloomingdale High School last month to learn about the Bell Shoals Rd. widening project expected to start soon. widening will not be complete until According to county representatives, areas, traffic lane closures may be nec2022. funding for the project comes from severessary and drivers are urged to observe Plans include widening the stretch al sources, including approximately $8 all traffic control measures and be aware from two to four lanes with landscaped million from the Community Local Gas of potential shifts in traffic patterns. medians and a bike lane and sidewalk in Tax, $27 million from the Community Citizens at the meeting expressed each direction. everyone safe and makes it as easy to travel the road as possible,” said Beth Kinnard, a resident of the Oakdale community who drives through Bell Shoals seven times a day when school is in session. Hillsborough County Engineering Services Manager Leland Dicus answered these concerns stating that part of the construction agreement stipulates that two-way traffic must be maintained for the duration of the project to minimize the input on drivers. An additional resident concern brought up at the meeting deals with the new medians which will restrict turns in to some communities on Bell Shoals Rd. Hilary and Richard Eklund who live in the Indian Hills community are concerned that making only one option to turn left out of their 77-home neighborhood will cause safety issues, especially when high school and middle school students are at their bus stop. In response to this issue, Dicus sites numerous meetings the county planned with local HOAs and neighborhood groups. “We have put a lot of time and effort into placing the access points with a goal of balancing safety with ease for residents,” he said. “Going from a two-lane road to a four-lane road naturally means that turn options will be decreased. We feel that we have come up with the safest and most efficient plan possible.” Residents are encouraged to submit questions and find additional information on the project at www.HCFLGov.net/CountyProjects or by calling Public Works at 635-5400.

Volunteers Needed To Help Women Get Back On Their Feet
By Kate Quesada
Staff members at Mary and Martha House helped more than 80 motherchildren families rebuild their lives after homelessness and domestic violence.
For more than 35 years, Mary and Martha House, based in Ruskin, has been helping women and their children all over Hillsborough County get back on their feet after domestic violence and or homelessness. The group relies on assistance from the community to support its clients and is currently looking for help from volunteers and donors. A private non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, Mary and Martha House provides individualized case management to help women in need identify personal barriers and overcome them. Last year the organization provided shelter and support to more than 80 mother and children families in their time of need. “Every woman is different and we do more than simply provide a roof over their heads,” said Executive Director Laurie Herring. When women come to Mary and
Martha House, they sit down with a case manager and within 24 hours start building a plan for the rest of their lives. “Our goal is to empower them and give them the tools to help them make the best decisions they can,” said Herring. “We feel that education is everything and our program is loaded with ways to help them learn to function on their own.” The three securely located shelters are designed to be as much like homes as possible, with each family housed in its own space. “The Employment Readiness program helps clients determine what their skills and talents are and allows them to determine the best ways to use them to make a living,” said Herring, who explained that the group also coordinates continuing education for its clients. Residents can then move on to the Retail 101 Program where they are offered hands-on experience at Mary and Martha House’s two retail locations, The Rose Boutique and The Thrift Shop, both of which are located in Ruskin. “These women are completely broken when they come in and every day they are taking steps to get to where they need to be,” said Herring. Tampa General Opens New Urgent Care Center With Onsite Lab In Brandon
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Tampa General Hospital is considered one of the top 50 hospitals in the nation. With such a rich tradition and history dating back as far as 1926, it is no wonder that Tampa General has become a trusted name in the community. In September, Tampa General opened its newest urgent care center at 799 W Lumsden Rd. in Brandon. The 4,000 sq. ft. facility consists of five exam rooms, a laboratory room and an x-ray room. Marion Dawkins, manager of ambulatory business operations is excited to get the word out to the families in the community. The clinic is averaging about 70 people per week since the doors opened last month and the volume is increasing daily. “TGH Urgent Care is a walk-in clinic that provides medical treatment for a variety of non-emergency conditions,” said Dawkins. “Some of our most common conditions treated are sinus infections, cough colds and flu, ear infections, minor cuts and bruises and urinary tract infections.” Having an urgent care clinic available for non-emergency conditions allows the emergency rooms located at local hospi-

tals to focus on life threatening, emergency conditions. “Typically, wait times at an urgent care are much less than they would be in an emergency room,” said Dawkins. “Urgent cares also provide care at a much lower cost than an emergency room would for non-life threating illnesses.” Providing the same high quality care to patients that all other Tampa General facilities provide, it also links patients’ electronic medical records as the hospital and other primary care clinics. “So, if you’ve ever been seen at a Tampa General Hospital facility, we have access to your past records, which makes for a more seamless patient experience and for better quality of care,” said Dawkins. The clinic is also open seven days a week. The hours are Monday to Friday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. It also has an on site laboratory and x-ray capabilities for one-stop convenience. “This urgent care center allows us to provide care in the communities that we serve,” said Adam Smith, vice president of ambulatory services. “It is an important part of the strategic plan for Tampa General Hospital to expand our services and provide patients convenient care where they live and work.” Tampa General Hospital Urgent Care is located at 799 W Lumsden Rd. in Brandon. Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays*NOVEMBER 2018 Sandwich Day * Chicken Soup For The Soul Day * National Fast Food Day * Go For A Ride Day Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesser-known holidays throughout the year. Many people consider November as the month of gratefulness. In the original Roman calendar, November was the ninth month of the year. Its name comes from the Latin word ‘novem’ which means nine. However, it became the eleventh month when the Romans added January and February to the start of the year. November brings us many notable events including Election Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. November is also known as National Beard Month (also known as ‘No-Shave November’) as a way to raise cancer awareness. If you are looking for other fun ways to celebrate, consider one of these lesserknown holidays. On Monday, November 12, peo-
ple from all over celebrated Chicken Soup For The Soul Day. This heartwarming holiday is celebrated each year to pay tribute to the encouraging stories from the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series. These inspirational books have allowed ordinary people to share their extraordinary stories with readers worldwide for 20 years,
Company at 1919 E 7th Ave. in Tampa. Use #ChickenSoupForTheSoulDay to post your celebration on social media. If you are always in a hurry, then National Fast Food Day on Friday, November 16, is your day to celebrate. Did you know that the first fast food restaurant in United States was
selling more than 110 million copies. According to the book series creators, this day was created to celebrate “who you are, where you’ve been, where you’re going and who you will be thankful to when you get there!” Honor this day by reflecting on the past year or reading a book from the series – perhaps over a bowl of chicken soup! Chicken soup is the king of comfort foods and thought to be a remedy for colds, flus and just about anything else that ails you. So, if you want to ’soupersize’ your day with a ‘souper’ delicious bowl of chicken noodle soup, perhaps consider a visit to Chick-N-Bones at 1953 W Lumsden Rd, in Brandon or The Stone Soup
White Castle in Wichita, Kansas in 1921? This restaurant was considered to be ahead of its time and they only sold hamburgers that cost a nickel each. Today, fast food is an American tradition. There are more than 300,000 fast food restaurants in the United States alone. In 2017, Americans spent $208 billion on fast food. Also a fun fact: 90 percent of American children will visit a McDonald’s restaurant in any given month. Many fast food restaurants celebrate this day with different specials, so download the different apps on your phone or visit the websites to find out what is available. Go ‘tacobout’ it with the family and head out to

your local Taco Bell, Wendy’s, ChickFil-A, McDonalds, Burger King, Arby’s, Subway or KFC to honor this American tradition! After your fast-food adventures, nothing is more exciting than a carefree drive. Thursday, November 22 is National Go For A Ride Day. This holiday reminds us to savor each moment and enjoy life’s aimless journeys. To celebrate Go For a Ride Day, gas up your car and explore a new part of town, or find a new mode of ‘riding.’ There are plenty of transportation alternatives in the Tampa Bay area. Consider a fun Segway tour of Tampa’s waterside area through www.magiccarpetglide.com. Consider a water taxi ride to discover Tampa Bay’s beautiful homes, history and wildlife through www.tampawatertaxico.com. If you want to ride a little further, take the Suncoast Beach Trolley (www.psta.net/riding-psta/trolley-services) and explore area beaches, restaurants and local attractions the easy way without worrying about directions or parking. Wherever your journey takes you, make sure to sit back and enjoy the ride. November boasts many other fun holidays including Cook Something Bold Day, Clean Your Refrigerator Day, Homemade Bread Day and Square Dance Day, just to name a few. A group of students at Bloomingdale High School is looking for help putting together a special night for some special teenagers. The school’s JROTC program has supported “The Night of a Thousand Stars”, an annual ball for guests 16 and older with disabilities, for the last six years, but recently due to illness, the ball was almost canceled for 2018. The JROTC unit volunteered to sponsor this year’s event and are looking for residents and businesses to donate to make the event a success. According to Junior Kalei Douglas, a cadet in the school’s JROTC program, the ball is usually organized by its founder, Marcia Minutello, who started the event 10 years ago. Her recent health issues have meant that Minutello was unable to perform her usual fundraising and organizing activities, “so Mrs. Minutello had cancelled the ball this year,” said Douglas. “Upon hearing the news, the JROTC refused to let the dance disappear so the unit collectively decided to take the weight of the ball onto its shoul-
ders with Mrs. Minutello’s guidance.” The JROTC is now responsible for catering the night for 200 guests from throughout the area in addition to funding other costs of putting the event together. “The ball gives the attendees an opportunity to express themselves with people of similar attributes without fear of ridicule or judgment,” said Douglas. “This has been a special tradition in our community for 10 years and we don’t want that to end.” The JROTC unit will also work as security during the event, escorting the guests, serving food and working in the kitchen. The ball is scheduled to take place Friday, November 30 at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Brandon. Any residents or businesses interested in sponsoring the event or contributing in any way are asked to contact the Bloomingdale JROTC at bloombulls@gmail.com. Bloomingdale High School is located at 1700 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico and can be reached at 744-8018.

Angeloni Tax Advisory Group Offers Expert Financial Advice Licensed fiduciary Howie Angeloni views himself as a financial protector. He does not want clients to lose money and he does not charge any fees to his customers. The Air Force veteran of 21 years does not cut corners, and morally, always does the right thing. Angeloni enjoys being able to help clients achieve their financial goals. “I like to see the looks on people’s faces when they don’t lose money when the market goes down and when they are able to make money,” he said. “I like showing clients that they actually have a positive financial future.” Angeloni’s son, Mitch Angeloni, has joined the family business, and has been working there for just under a year. Mitch is the Agency Manager, and he will take over the business one day when his father retires. “I am teaching him the ropes, and to always put his clients before himself,” Angeloni said. His company, Angeloni Tax Advisory, offers a wide array of financial services, from insurance products, funeral estate planning, investment services, to savings accounts and CDs, all the way to stocks,

bonds and mutual funds, and anything in between. He also does social security workshops to explain to people when the best and most efficient time to take social security is. Angeloni’s ultimate goal is to help as many people as the company can. According to Angeloni, his clients do not get charged any fees for services. The only fee is if he manages stocks, bonds and mutual funds for clients. He only has to charge a fee because the companies charge him a fee. He said that if he could manage for no cost he would, and only charges the minimal .5 percent for his investment services. “We marry tax advice, estate planning, retirement advice and income planning so that the future for the retiree looks more like a runway than a mountain, so that they are not going up and down and worrying about tomorrow,” Angeloni said. “We sell ‘sleep insurance’ so that way, when they go to bed at night, they know things are taken care of for the future.” Visit www.AngeloniTax.com. How To Enhance The Well-Being Of Your Four Legged Friends
By Dr. Jennifer Challenger DVM, MPH
You can improve your pet's life tremendously, and at that same time, help your community simply by having your pet spayed or neutered. There are many important reasons for having this procedure performed on your pet. In addition to improved health and behavior, you will be doing your part to reduce animal overpopulation. Millions of unwanted animals are put to sleep each year because good homes are limited, and many pets in shelters simply cannot be adopted. There are also several other extremely important reasons why spaying or neutering your pet is a positively good decision. Spaying your female pet prevents the signs of heat that can attract a lot of unwanted male dogs or cats to your house, not to mention the inevitable blood stains on your carpet, an unpleasant side effect of the heat cycle. It also greatly reduces the chance of developing breast tumors and eliminates the development of cystic ovaries and life-threatening uterine infections. All of these health problems occur in a significant number of older, intact female pets. Once the procedure is performed, you no longer have to worry about surprise pregnancies and a house full of unwanted puppies or kittens. Neutering your male pet makes him easier to train, because he will focus
more on you, instead of exercising his innate desire to roam and potentially get lost or hurt. Even more importantly, neutering eliminates undesirable sexual behavior and prevents the marking of territory with urine (both indoors and outdoors) and decreases the odor of a tom cat's urine in the litter box. There are also several significant health advantages to neutering your male pets. The incidence of prostate tumors, for example, is greatly diminished and testicular disease is eliminated. Research has shown that prostatic hypertrophy, prostatitis and testicular cancer occur in more than 85 percent of male pets that have not been neutered. Surgery is recommended as early as three months of age because of the small size of the reproductive tract, but it can be performed on older animals, as well. It is important that older animals undergo the procedure before they suffer any of the repercussions that can occur if they have not been spayed or neutered. Surgery is performed painlessly while your pet is under general anesthesia. Spaying or neutering is a caring and humane decision that you can make for your pet. It is, quite simply, the easiest way you can help your pet live a longer and healthier life, so the companionship you enjoy will endure for years to come.
