Volunteers Needed To Help Women Get Back On Their Feet
By Kate Quesada
Staff members at Mary and Martha House helped more than 80 motherchildren families rebuild their lives after homelessness and domestic violence.
For more than 35 years, Mary and Martha House, based in Ruskin, has been helping women and their children all over Hillsborough County get back on their feet after domestic violence and or homelessness. The group relies on assistance from the community to support its clients and is currently looking for help from volunteers and donors. A private non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, Mary and Martha House provides individualized case management to help women in need identify personal barriers and overcome them. Last year the organization provided shelter and support to more than 80 mother and children families in their time of need. “Every woman is different and we do more than simply provide a roof over their heads,” said Executive Director Laurie Herring. When women come to Mary and
Martha House, they sit down with a case manager and within 24 hours start building a plan for the rest of their lives. “Our goal is to empower them and give them the tools to help them make the best decisions they can,” said Herring. “We feel that education is everything and our program is loaded with ways to help them learn to function on their own.” The three securely located shelters are designed to be as much like homes as possible, with each family housed in its own space. “The Employment Readiness program helps clients determine what their skills and talents are and allows them to determine the best ways to use them to make a living,” said Herring, who explained that the group also coordinates continuing education for its clients. Residents can then move on to the Retail 101 Program where they are offered hands-on experience at Mary and Martha House’s two retail locations, The Rose Boutique and The Thrift Shop, both of which are located in Ruskin. “These women are completely broken when they come in and every day they are taking steps to get to where they need to be,” said Herring. By Amanda Boston
The 49th annual Novemberfest will be held from Wednesday, November 14 through Sunday, November 18 on the grounds of Nativity Catholic Church. The event features Midway rides, games, food tents and live entertainment. “Novemberfest is an awesome example of how a local community comes together to put on a family-fun event for people of all ages,” said Alexis Redig, the Faith and Media Coordinator for Nativity Catholic Church. Redig continued, "From the support of local businesses through sponsorships to the countless hours our parish and school volunteers put in, all the way to the folks who travel near and far to enjoy the carnival—all of these pieces help to make Novemberfest such a successful event.” The festivities will take place on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-10 p.m.; Friday from 4 p.m.-12 Midnight; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 Midnight; and Sunday from 12 Noon to 8 p.m. Like in years past, the admission, parking and live entertainment are all free. Food and Midway ride armbands will be available for purchase on the premises. Unlimited ride armbands are available
for $23 at the fest, but discounted armbands can be pre-purchased for $17 from Nativity School students. In the evenings, music from ‘Center Stage’ will aid in the merrymaking as bands and local musical acts play free concerts. On Wednesday evening, Abby and Davis will host a youth ministry night filled with music and trivia. The next night, the band Classix will join the entertainment line-up. Also returning this year is the country rock band ‘Soul Circus Cowboy,’ whose lead singer, Billy McKnight, is an alumnus of Nativity Catholic School. The band will take the stage on Friday night. Saturday night will welcome back country music singer Daniel Sprouse, a Plant City native. “I look forward to going to Novemberfest every year and seeing my former classmates and teachers,” said Dana Burkholder, a Nativity alumnus. “I also enjoy seeing how much Novemberfest has grown since I graduated.” Nativity Catholic Church and School are located at 705 E. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon. Visit www.nativitycatholicchurch.org/novemberfest.

Tampa General Opens New Urgent Care Center With Onsite Lab In Brandon
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Tampa General Hospital is considered one of the top 50 hospitals in the nation. With such a rich tradition and history dating back as far as 1926, it is no wonder that Tampa General has become a trusted name in the community. In September, Tampa General opened its newest urgent care center at 799 W Lumsden Rd. in Brandon. The 4,000 sq. ft. facility consists of five exam rooms, a laboratory room and an x-ray room. Marion Dawkins, manager of ambulatory business operations is excited to get the word out to the families in the community. The clinic is averaging about 70 people per week since the doors opened last month and the volume is increasing daily. “TGH Urgent Care is a walk-in clinic that provides medical treatment for a variety of non-emergency conditions,” said Dawkins. “Some of our most common conditions treated are sinus infections, cough colds and flu, ear infections, minor cuts and bruises and urinary tract infections.” Having an urgent care clinic available for non-emergency conditions allows the emergency rooms located at local hospi-

tals to focus on life threatening, emergency conditions. “Typically, wait times at an urgent care are much less than they would be in an emergency room,” said Dawkins. “Urgent cares also provide care at a much lower cost than an emergency room would for non-life threating illnesses.” Providing the same high quality care to patients that all other Tampa General facilities provide, it also links patients’ electronic medical records as the hospital and other primary care clinics. “So, if you’ve ever been seen at a Tampa General Hospital facility, we have access to your past records which makes for a more seamless patient experience and for better quality of care,” said Dawkins. The clinic is also open seven days a week. The hours are Monday to Friday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. It also has on site laboratory and x-ray capabilities for onestop convenience. “This urgent care center allows us to provide care in the communities that we serve,” said Adam Smith, vice president of ambulatory services. “It is an important part of the strategic plan for Tampa General Hospital, to expand our services and provide patients convenient care where they live and work.” Tampa General Hospital Urgent Care is located at 799 W Lumsden Rd. in Brandon. Work is expected to begin this month on the much anticipated project to widen Bell Shoals Rd. between Bloomingdale Ave. and Boyette Rd. County representatives spoke to residents about the $65-million project at a public meeting at Bloomingdale High Bell Shoals Road School last month, emphasizing the goals of the project, especially to improve safety and mobility along the heavily traveled 3.1-mile stretch of road. “This project has been 15 years in the making,” said Project Manager Tommy Rawls with the Hillsborough County Public Works Department. “Our number one priority is the safe completion of the project in the most reasonable time frame possible.” According to Rawls, the county is planning to start relocating utilities in the area in the next month while construction companies bid for the widening project. The actual widening is expected to begin in spring 2019. At that time, another public meeting will be scheduled to inform residents of the timeline and specific phases of the project, although current data suggests that the widening will not Residents gathered at a public meeting at Bloomingdale High School last month to learn about the Bell Shoals Rd. widening project expected to start soon. be complete until 2022. traffic lane closures may be necessary According to county representatives, Plans include widening the stretch and drivers are urged to observe all traffic for the project comes from several funding from two to four lanes with landscaped control measures and be aware of potensources, including approximately $8 milmedians and a bike lane and sidewalk in tial shifts in traffic patterns. lion from the Community Local Gas Tax, each direction. be handled in a way that keeps everyone safe and makes it as easy to travel the road as possible,” said Beth Kinnard, a resident of the Oakdale community who drives Bell Shoals seven times a day when school is in session. Hillsborough County Engineering Services Manager Leland Dicus answered these concerns stating that part of the construction agreement stipulates that two-way traffic must be maintained for the duration of the project to minimize the input on drivers. An additional resident concern brought up at the meeting deals with the new medians which will restrict turns in to some communities on Bell Shoals Rd. Hilary and Richard Eklund who live in the Indian Hills community are concerned that making only one option to turn left out of their 77-home neighborhood will cause safety issues, especially when high school and middle school students are at their bus stop. In response to this issue, Dicus sites numerous meetings the county planned with local HOAs and neighborhood groups. “We have put a lot of time and effort into placing the access points with a goal of balancing safety with ease for residents,” he said. “Going from a two-lane road to a four-lane road naturally means that turn options will be decreased. We feel that we have come up with the safest and most efficient plan possible.” Residents are encouraged to submit questions and find additional information on the project at www.HCFLGov.net/CountyProjects or by calling Public Works at 635-5400.

BizTown Opens New JA Finance Park Program For Eighth Grade Students Brandon area middle school students have a new, hands-on way to learn about finance. Junior Achievement (JA) of Tampa Bay opened the new JA Finance Park last month offering an innovative economic simulation program providing students with key concepts in personal finance and budgeting. Presented by SunTrust in collaboration with Hillsborough County Public Schools, the finance park expects to serve more than 13,000 local middle school students annually with the goal of building a foundation for solid financial decisions throughout their lives. “After two and a half years of development, we are so pleased to welcome students through the doors of the new JA Finance Park,” said President of JA Tampa Bay, Richard George. “It is our mission to ensure every child in our region has a fundamental understanding of our economic system and their role in it. JA Finance Park will do just this, but we also hope it will inspire their future careers and empower them to own their economic success.” Construction and start-up costs for the 18,000-sq.-ft., state-of-the-art facility, located at the Bill Poe Family Junior Achievement Campus in Tampa, adjacent to the successful JA BizTown, were more than $5 million. The Finance Park features 18 store fronts representing local businesses, including financial services, health care, credit, utilities and manufacturing. Upon entering the center, the students receive a real life situation with a job, income, education and family scenario. Based on their adult personas, they visit businesses

JA Tampa Bay works closely with the Hillsborough County Public Schools curriculum and students work in school on the subject matter before and after visiting the center. “JA Tampa Bay has been a trusted partner with JA BizTown throughout the years, so when we learned about JA Finance Park, we knew the program would deliver on its goals and set up students to succeed,” said Hillsborough County Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Eakins. “JA Finance Park aligns closely with the career exploration and life plans that are required in the eighth grade Florida State Standards, but it also provides students with real world situations that will make textbook lessons more real and relevant.” Finance Park is located at 13707 N. 22nd St. in Tampa. Randall Student Gets Crafty To Raise Money For Toys For Shriners’ Patients
By Kate Quesada
Lithia resident Carleigh Doerr is looking for help giving back to a group that is very close to her heart. The 12-year-old Randall Middle School student underwent surgery at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa four years ago and has been looking for ways to help the patients and staff there ever since. She recently started a quest to fulfill the hospital’s donation wish list by Christmas and is selling crafts at a local market and asking for donations on her Go Fund Me page with a goal of raising $5,000 before Black Friday so that she can purchase the items at a discount. “Shriners was a Godsend for our family when Carleigh was in pain and needed help,” said her mother, Erin Clark. “She started giving back to them even when she was still a patient there and now that she is older she has made it her mission to do what she can to help.” When she was eight years old, Doerr underwent surgery on both of her femurs. She then had a year of physical therapy followed by another surgery to remove the hardware and another round of physical therapy. “It was a huge accomplishment when she was finally able to walk, run and play without any pain,” said Clark. Over the years since her surgery, Doerr has made key chains and goodie bags for the children checking in for appointments at the hospital, but this year she has set her sights on the larger goal of raising $5,000 to purchase new toys the Shriners have listed on its website. The list contains items such as crib mobiles and sippy cups for infants, toys and crayons for pre-school aged children, arts and crafts and action figures for school-aged patients and wallets, perfume, cologne and body wash for adolescents. “These items have to be purchased new as the children have compromised

immune systems, so the hospital is unable to take previously used items,” said Clark. For the last few months, Doerr has been making jewelry, coasters and canvas art to sell at the monthly vendor market at the Tin Roof Trading Company. She will have a table set up at the store’s December 1 market and residents are encouraged to stop by and make a purchase or donation. Anyone who is unable to attend the market can make a donation at Doerr’s Go Fund Me Page at gf.me/u/k8w7rn. “I understand how it feels to be in a hospital and how it takes time to get used to it,” said Doerr who wants to be a physical therapist at Shriners when she is older. “My goal is to collect enough money to buy toys for all the children coming into the hospitals to help them feel at home there.” For information on the Shriners Hospital, visit www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org. A full list of items on the wish list is available on Doerr’s Go Fund Me Page. The Tin Roof Trading Company is located at 10530 S. C.R. 39 in Lithia and can be reached at 650-0054.

Angeloni’s ultimate goal is to help as many people as the company can. According to Angeloni, his clients do not get charged any fees for services. A group of students at Bloomingdale High School are looking for help putting together a special night for those less fortunate. The school’s JROTC program has supported “The Night of a Thousand Stars”, an annual ball for guests 16 and older with disabilities, for the last six years, but recently due to illness, the ball almost cancelled for 2018. The JROTC unit volunteered to sponsor this year’s event and are looking for residents and businesses to donate to make the event a success. According to Junior Kalei Douglas, a cadet in the school’s JROTC program, the ball is usually organized by its founder, Marcia Minutello, who started the event 10 years ago. Her recent health issues have meant that Minutello was unable to perform her usual fundraising and organizing activities, “so Mrs. Minutello had cancelled the ball this year,” said Douglas. “Upon hearing the news, the JROTC refused to let the dance disappear so the unit collectively decided to

of the ball onto its shoulders with Mrs. Minutello’s guidance.” The JROTC is now responsible for catering the night for 200 guests from throughout the area in addition to funding other costs of putting the
event together. “The ball gives the attendees an opportunity to express themselves with people of similar attributes without fear of ridicule or judgment,” said Douglas. “This has been a special tradition in our community for 10 years and we don’t want that to end.” The JROTC unit will also work as security during the event, escorting the guests, serving food and working in the kitchen. The ball is scheduled to take place Friday, November 30 at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Brandon. Any residents or businesses interested in sponsoring the event or contributing in any way are asked to contact the Bloomingdale JROTC at bloombulls@gmail.com. Center Place To Kick Off The Holidays AJ’s Fine Wines & Liquors With 8th Annual Holiday Tea Celebrates 15 Years In Business By Kathy L. Collins By Amy Schechter
Ajay and Geeta Jambhekar pride themselves on being the owners of your friendly, neighborhood liquor store where bringing the community together is an integral part of their business plan. AJ’s Fine Wines & Liquors recently hosted a 15-year celebration that was a melting pot of local business leaders, with over 20 local establishments coming together to network and have a good time. This is more than just your average place to pick up beer, wine, liquor and cigars, although you will be impressed with the variety they offer. Their 15-year celebration highlighted a long-time partnership with Whitney Tucker, owner of Rosati’s Chicago-Style Pizza, who provided finger foods, along with snacks provided from the Publix within the plaza and hor d'oeuvres from Chick-fil-A South Brandon. It also showcased some of his many rotational partnerships with local and national distributors with representatives from Republic National Distributing Company and RumChata providing beer, wine and mixed drinks. His wife, Geeta, is overwhelmed with pride for her husband’s work ethic in combination with the community support, “He is so into our community. We’ve been here 15 years, and he works so hard, but we both know we wouldn’t be here without the support the
community has given us.” The Osprey Observer’s own Marie Gilmore helped emcee the event and raffle door prizes saying, “This is truly your local hometown liquor store. Ajay is always here with a smile ready to meet your needs and educate you on his products.” This celebration is definitely not the end of networking events Ajay plans. “I would like to do this every three to four months,” Ajay explains. “The idea is to bring the community together,” and the space is perfect. Offering a bar and outside patio area, Ajay plans to hold a Ladies’ Night every Tuesday and a Mens’ Night every Thursday where patrons can come together to share discounted beverages, partake in a discounted Rosati’s menu, and network. Furthermore, this space is available to rent free of charge if local patrons and business owners purchase product from AJ’s. It’s a perfect way to thank employees, foster new business partnerships, or just have fun. For questions, contact Jambhekar at 643-1003 or visit on Facebook AJs-FineWine-Liquors/143811305653451. AJ’s Fine Wines is located in the Publix Plaza at 3443 Lithia Pinecrest Rd., in Valrico.

By Marie Gilmore
The Valrico/FishHawk Chamber is once again bringing a Shop Local Expo to Park Square in true Florida Style with the Fourth Annual Shop Local Expo on Saturday, November 17, from 9 a.m.Noon. With food tasting, fun games, crafts for kids and shopping opportunities with local vendors, there is sure to be something for everyone! FishHawk’s own resident Jake Dela Cruz will be the DJ and emcee for the event which will include the annual Mascot Dance Off and Corporate Flamingo Challenge. Last year’s winner, Encore by David Weekly, showcased a corporate flamingo in a holiday house for the 1st place finish.
The idea of an old-fashioned, family fun expo, games, treats for kids, business booths and local crafters, all gathering for a shopping event was developed and the first annual Shop Local Expo was created three years ago. “We wanted to host an event that would help introduce our businesses to the community and also make it fun for parents and families,” said Valrico/FishHawk Chamber Event Coordinator Bridget Jenkins Wilson, owner of Cardinal Roofing. "And, to give our local businesses a chance to display their booths to the community." Families will enjoy music, shop the local business booths, enjoy games and pick up a few treats for gift giving. Business booths are sold out but interested volunteers or participants can email questions to Bridget@cardinalroofingandsolar.com or find more information at www.ValricoFisHawk.org. The Valrico/FishHawk Chamber is a non-profit organization of more than 235 small and local businesses.
