Redig continued, "From the support of local businesses through sponsorships to the countless hours our parish and school volunteers put in, all the way to the folks who travel near and far to enjoy the carnival—all of these pieces help to make Novemberfest such a successful event.” The festivities will take place on Wednesday and Thursday from 4-10 p.m.; Friday from 4 p.m.12 Midnight; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 Midnight; and Sunday from 12 Noon to 8 p.m. Like in years past, the admission, parking and live entertainment are all free. Who’s ready for a good oldfashioned Christian revival? On Sunday, December 2, join the well-known athlete and evangelist Tim Tebow for A Night of Hope at Tropicana Field. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m. The event will feature music from GRAMMY®-nominated Christian singer Kari Jobe, who is best-known for her songs Forever and Where I Find You, as well as music from Cody Carnes, Mack Brock, Shannon Estee and Mission City Worship. Dustin LaChance, pastor of Mission City Church in Largo, will also deliver a short message. “I’ve wanted to see a revival like this in Pinellas County for a long time,” said LaChance. “It has been on my heart for a while to help people in this area grow closer to Jesus and find community with others.” A Night of Hope 2018 is open to all ages and free. Tickets for entrance into the stadium will be handed out at the door. While the event is free, please be prepared to pay for parking. Movement 2819, a local nonprofit and ministry of Mission City Church, is hosting the event. The grassroots ministry takes its name from Matthew

28:19, also known as the Great Commission verse—“Therefore, go and make disciples....” The last revival in the Tampa Bay area was in 2007 at Raymond James Stadium with Luis Palau and in 1998 with Billy Graham. With Tebow as the special speaker, the organizers of A Night of Hope anticipate the crowd to be composed of both Christians and non-Christians. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet with local churches and ministries that will be on the premises. “I can’t wait to be a part of this

amazing event,” said Lynette Consigny, a volunteer at Night of Hope 2018 and a member of Mission City Church. “This is something that people of all ages in Tampa Bay should come out to, whether you’re a Christian or not. It is all about bringing people together.” You can help support A Night of Hope financially at www.movement2819.com. It was the middle of a tennis match. I was in a semicrouched position at the baseline, ready to receive the serve when I saw it: a black leggy insect flying like a kamikaze pilot toward my face. I swung my racket at it … and missed. A wasp! Coming fast. Aiming right between my eyes. In self-defense, I swatted it away with my hand and immediately felt the red-hot searing sting on my index finger. Yeeeowwwcchhh! My tennis partner oozed sympathy when she saw my finger swelling like a bratwurst, but my opponents were quick to inform me that I could only have two minutes to recover. There is, after all, no such thing as an insect let in a blood sport like tennis. (And you thought we were out there having fun?) Now a wasp sting is very different than a bee sting. When a bee stings you, the barbed stinger tears loose from the bee’s abdomen and it dies. But a wasp doesn’t die after stinging you. With no barbed stinger, it can sting multiple times, and this particularly miffed one on the tennis court missed the memo that the war was over. When my measly two minutes had expired and I was back on the court trying to wrap my unbending sausage finger around my racquet grip, here comes the relentless insect yet again, circling my head, zeroing in for the kill. I knew my 63-inch self was no match for that irate 2-inch dude so I exited stage right. As I later sat with an ice bag encompassing my edematous finger, it occurred to me that stings – whether from bush beasties or humans – take

precious time for recovery. Time that is completely wasted. Time that could be used doing any number of helpful, useful, productive things. Stings inflict damage, they’re totally unnecessary, serve no redemptive purpose, and wouldn’t we all be better off if they never happened in the first place? It was at that moment that I got a conviction heart-tweet from Papa God: Deb, dearest daughter, remember that careless remark you made to your friend yesterday and the flicker of hurt that crossed her face? How do you think people feel about the stings you yourself sometimes inflict? They’re totally unnecessary, serve no redemptive purpose, and wouldn’t we all be better off if they never happened in the first place? Ouch. My scripture-of-the-month floated into focus: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Col. 3:12-13 NIV). Come to think of it, that sounds pretty anti-sting to me. And it also sounds non-coincidental that a vitriolic wasp with an inexplicable vendetta targeted me in the middle of a tennis court. Geesh. I hope all my life lessons don’t hurt so much.

Heroic Women of the Bible Mary of Nazareth – The Most Blessed Of Women

Local Happenings In Our Community

Throughout the Bible, there are many stories of strong and heroic women. In this series, we explore a story of a faithful biblical woman each month. With their strong faith, the women of the Bible continue to teach us how to live authentic, faith-filled lives. No matter what our circumstances are, we can find ourselves in their stories. Concluding the Heroic Women of the Bible series is Mary of Nazareth, the mother of Jesus. Mary is one of the most admired figures in Scripture and has been considered by many people throughout history to be the greatest of all Christian saints. She was a young, willing servant who obeyed the call of God in spite of her circumstances. While her life held great honor, it also held great suffering and sorrow. Being the mother of the Messiah brought an abundance of pain and often frightening situations. Despite these things, she consistently responded to God with obedience and submission. Most of us know the story of Mary from the Bible stories we heard growing up. Mary was a teenager living in Nazareth when the angel Gabriel appeared to her and proclaimed that God had chosen her to give birth to the Messiah. In the Bible, the Book of Matthew tells us that when the angel appeared, Mary was already engaged to

a man named Joseph. Regardless of the uncertainty and the repercussions that her pregnancy would have on her reputation and relationship with her future husband, Mary accepted her role in God’s plan. Mary suffered fear and loneliness while waiting for Joseph to decide if he would still marry her. She also feared retribution from her own family for the disgrace of an unplanned pregnancy. Ultimately, Joseph married her, and they raised Jesus together as their son. However, Mary’s deepest suffering was witnessing the death of her son on the cross. Any crucifixion was a horrible event to witness, and Roman soldiers would not permit emotionally distraught relatives to deter them. Mary saw the death of her son with strength, grace and dignity. Of all the moments of sadness and worry, this would have been the most devastating to the mother of Jesus. By submitting herself to God’s will, Mary is a model of obedience showing us how to be a servant of God. She surrendered her life to God’s purpose. Mary is a symbol of God’s desire to use the strength of ordinary women to do great things. We can gain encouragement from this young, humble girl who now stands as one of the most loved and respected women in history.

ECHO Expands Its Community Outreach With New Riverview Location By Libby Hopkins

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Photo credit: Keith Vassalotti The Salles-Arbuissonnas-en-Beaujolais Priory is located in France and is a 10th-century monastery that is rich with historical significance in the region.

Salles-Arbuissonnas-en-Beaujolais Priory in France

The Salles-Arbuissonnas-enBeaujolais Priory is a must-see for visitors in this winemaking region of France. A priory is a monastery that houses friars, monks and nuns. Founded by the monks of Cluny in the 10th century, this priory is notable for its outstanding Roman monastery and elaborate porch. Adjacent to the priory building is a museum that displays art exhibits and Gallo-Roman artifacts and explores the monastery life in SallesArbuissonnas. After the departure of the Cluny monks, the priory was then occupied by a chapter of Benedictine nuns in the 14th century. These nuns, also known as Canoness Countesses, were actually powerful, noble women who were part socialites and part nun. They profoundly marked the history of the village. Countesses were not common in the region, which made the priory distinctively unique. Now listed as a historical monument, it possesses many works of art that are representative of the differ-

ent times and customs. Visitors are greeted by simple, colonnaded gallery opening into a 15thcentury room with a vaulted ceiling and central pillar. The room is adorned with symbols of the four evangelists and murals. The museum and information center opened its doors in July 2012, and its exhibition outlines significant developments that have marked the Beaujolais region. The museum tour costs $6 U.S. dollars and is open from April through October. Beaujolais is a historical province and a wine-producing region in France. It is located north of Lyon and approximately four hours south of France. It is most well known for Beaujolais Nouveau Day, celebrated on the third Thursday in November each year with fireworks, music and festivals. Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made from Gamay grapes produced in Beaujolais. The five-day festival features wine tasting, live music and dancing. When I was a young child, my parents made sure I brushed and flossed my teeth twice daily and that I saw a dentist twice a year. Dental hygiene and oral health were considered extremely important in my family. However, we never thought twice about our pet's teeth. Foul breath and tooth loss were considered a natural and acceptable part of a pet's aging process. Times have certainly changed. As pets have evolved into more integral members of the family, veterinary medicine has become more sophisticated and knowledgeable in the specialized area of animal dentistry. We now recognize the significant pain and health risks our pets can potentially endure if they suffer from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease refers to a chronic bacterial infection in the mouth. As this disease advances, tartar builds up on the teeth, gums recede, abscesses and pockets of infection form, and ultimately bone infection and tooth loss occur. As the animal's gums become more inflamed, bacteria from the infection can enter the bloodstream. These ‘bacterial showers’ can affect the kidneys and/or heart valves of the animal. There is a strong genetic component to the development of periodontal disease. Some dogs and cats never develop the condition. However, most

will at some point in their lives. Daily brushing, chewing toys and rawhides, dental sprays and washes, and some foods help to slow the advance of dental disease. Still, even with all preventative measures, most animals require veterinary dental cleaning to maintain good oral health. Veterinary dental cleanings are outpatient procedures. Animals are admitted in the morning and can return home in the evening. Plaque is removed from the surface of the teeth with an ultrasonic dental scaler. A dental pick is used to remove tartar from between teeth and from below the gum line. Then the teeth are polished. The procedure is almost identical to the human dental cleaning. However, there is one significant difference: Animal dentistry is performed under general anesthesia, since our pets will not just lay still and open wide while dental procedures are being performed. Clients often express concern about the safety of anesthesia. Current anesthetic protocols are much safer today than they were when I was a child. Now that you know the facts about dental health, you can be on the alert if your pet breathes in your face and you are tempted to back away. Your canine companion may have a serious health problem. Don't hesitate-see your veterinarian.

First Baptist Christian Academy Volleyball Has Best Season In School History

By Nick Nahas

The First Baptist Brandon Christian Academy volleyball program had its best finish in school history for both varsity and JV. Both teams made it to the championship game, but fell a little short. “They were making plays that were out of this world,” said head coach Amanda Gonser. “They left everything on the court, and they played with heart.” The JV program won all of their regular season games, going 12-1 overall, falling to Central Baptist in the championship in two sets. The varsity program went 10-2 and also lost in the championship game to HEAT (Home

Education Activities Team) in three sets. The best finish prior to last season for varsity was when the team made it to the semifinals. The Eagles are a part of the TBCAL league. The Eagle’s varsity team had three players that started when the team was first formed and a couple of other players that started three years ago. According to Gonser, this was by far the best team she has ever had. “They have worked since the beginning and they have really learned the game,” she said. “We finally reached the point where we were playing true volleyball. They played the best volley-

ball that I’ve ever seen them play in the championship game.” Players from the JV squad include: Taelyn Potter, Lily Scheuerle, Madison Vega, Lauren Johnston, Tanner Gonser, Gianna Shephard, Marissa Brankley, Toby Highsmith, Jayden Lucas, Kaia Harris, Maci Buttram, Annabelle Anderson and Lucrezia Smith. Players from the varsity squad include: Addison Harris, Ymor Uludeg, Carlee Medlin, Kacie Carter, Lance Highsmith, Rylah Westfall, Hailee Rawlins, Ava Knauer, Sophia Flair, Jalynn Wright, Victoria Penido and

Andres Martinez. Gonser, who runs both the JV and varsity teams, started the volleyball program five years ago. She is also the Athletic Director at the school. Her assistant coach is Kristal Melin, who is also an assistant principal for the school. Some players plan on playing in a spring volleyball season in the offseason and others play basketball and softball as well. “It took us five years to get to this point,” said Gonser. “There was a continuous improvement each year and it finally all came together.”

Christian Singer Lauren Daigle Worships With Inmates In Maximum Security Prison

Last month, Christian artist Lauren Daigle visited the Statesville Correctional Prison in Crest Hill, Illinois and had an unanticipated

experience. The award-winning recording artist took to Facebook this weekend to share her experience that she said was beyond what she could articulate. “Yesterday was one so unexpected. It was a day that was more than I can articulate. It was a day my eyes had never seen and will never be able to unsee,” said Daigle. “We sang songs with inmates whose voices carried deeper into our hearts than the echo of a microphone will ever release. I saw hope in the face of the hopeless, joy in the wake of sorrow, wealth in the gap of depravity, and life in the midst of death. These people have stories, and they also have souls. I watched heaven befriend those who are often forgotten.” Daigle had the opportunity to minister to and worship with the inmates at the Illinois prison, and she documented the experience in a moving video that she also posted on Facebook. Statesville Correctional Center is a maximum-security state prison in Illinois for men and currently houses 3,500 inmates. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/laurendaiglemusic/.

Brandon Group Wins $10,000 Donation To Help Children Learn Through Music

By Kate Quesada

A Brandon area nonprofit charity believes that learning music gives children a head start in life and thanks to a recent donation from a Tampa company, they can now bring their gift to more students than ever. Insurance and Trust (IAT) earned a 2018 Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award for volunteer work bringing music to disadvantaged children with Instruments of Change, a public 501(c)3 based in Brandon. The award included a $5,000 donation to the charity from Safeco Insurance, which was doubled to $10,000 thanks to an active social media

The group was chosen for the award based on a photo application. A total of 24 independent agents will be chosen throughout 2018 to receive The Safeco Make More Happen Awards which focus on the area of health and safety, education and civil service. “We are excited to share the inspiring stories of our agents with their comBrandon-based charity Instruments for Change recently received a $10,000 donation from Safeco Insurance to provide music to students in fifth grade.

campaign. “Students who learn to play musical instruments generally score higher on academic tests and are less likely to engage in self-destructive behaviors,” said the group’s media representative, Calvin Jordan. “Instruments of Change works to bring band programs to elementary school students in an effort to positively influence their personal development.” According to Jordan, Instruments of

Change currently serves five elementary schools in Hillsborough County by providing musical instruments and instruction to

students. “Fifth graders at participating schools must sign a contract which obligates them to care for the instrument they are given, practice in preparation for performances and be held accountable to other students in the section,” said Jordan. “Upon successful completion of the contract and verified enrollment in a middle school band program, they receive their instrument for middle school.”

Vice President of IAT, Jeff Chernoff became president of the board of Instruments of Change earlier this year and hopes to grow the organization throughout Hillsborough County into Pinellas and eventually to the Orlando area. “My team and I have been involved with Instruments of Change for over four years and we are incredibly grateful to be awarded the Safeco Insurance Make More Happen Award so we can give back even more,” said Chernoff. “Instruments of Change continues to

Volunteers Needed To Help Women Get Back On Their Feet

Staff members at Mary and Martha House helped more than 80 motherchildren families rebuild their lives after homelessness and domestic violence.

For more than 35 years, Mary and Martha House, based in Ruskin, has been helping women and their children all over Hillsborough County get back on their feet after domestic violence and or homelessness. The group relies on assistance from the community to support its clients and is currently looking for help from volunteers and donors. A private non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, Mary and Martha House provides individualized case management to help women in need identify personal barriers and overcome them. Last year the organization provided shelter and support to more than 80 mother and children families in their time of need. “Every woman is different and we do more than simply provide a roof over their heads,” said Executive Director Laurie Herring.
