The Bridges Retirement Community created a 2019 calendar featuring seniors ‘recreating’ popular Hollywood movie roles, including costumes, props and backgrounds. The residents, aged 73 to 97 years old, participated in recreating 12 movie scenes such as Thelma & Louise, Cleopatra, Grease, Sister Act, Rocky, Mary Poppins and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. New County $17 Million SportsPlex Will Draw From Across County

By Kate Quesada

“Hillsborough County is building and will own the facility, which will be managed by the Tampa Sports Authority,” said Van Dyke. “Construction is funded by the County, with additional funding through the Tourist Development Tax and support from the Hillsborough County Tourist Development Council.” According to Van Dyke, a feasibility study projects the SportsPlex will have Hillsborough County officials and guests gathered for a sneak peak of the new $17 million SportsComplex which will host its first tournament in January.

The Brandon area will soon be home to one of the country’s most stateof-the-art sports facilities. The Hillsborough County Tournament SportsPlex, located on Columbus Dr. between U.S. Hwy. 301 and Falkenburg Rd., is home to 15 fields that will be used for a variety of sports starting in January. County representatives gathered earlier this month to celebrate the opening of the complex, expected to draw championship-level athletic events with teams from all over the country. “The 65-acre facility can be configured for a variety of sports, including soccer, football, lacrosse, rugby, cricket, ultimate (played with a flying disc) and field hockey,” said Hillsborough County Communications and Digital Media Representative Michelle Van Dyke. The $17 million SportsPlex is a partnership between Hillsborough County, the Tampa Sports Authority and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.

an economic impact of $7.3 million in its first year and $25 million in the fifth year. The first major tournament, the United States Flag and Touch Football League’s National Championships, is scheduled for January 18-20, 2019. Each field features professionally maintained Celebration Bermudagrass while the SportsPlex offers wireless internet access throughout, high-tech LED lightning which will also cut energy consumption by up to 65 percent and a robotic field striper that uses GPS to automatically line the fields. There is also a championship field with bleacher seating, adjacent to a 35,000 sq. ft. vendor village area for celebrations and sales. The SportsComplex is located at 9330 E. Columbus Dr. in Tampa. River Hills Fall Festival Benefits Seeds Of Hope More than 500 residents came together for a good time and a great cause last month in River Hills. The community’s Homeowners Association (HOA) held its Fall Festival offering carnival games, activities, music from a DJ and food for the whole family only asking residents for donations to local charity Seeds of Hope Inc. According to Julie Rule, co-chair for the River Hills HOA Social Team, the event featured nine carnival games and activities for residents of all ages. “The young children took their shoes off and had fun on the slide and obstacle bounce houses. Teenagers enjoyed the carnival games that ranged from the nostalgic ring toss and baseball through to the all-time favorite plinko, while children, parents and grandparents challenged each other in sack races,” said Rule. “Most definitely, there was laughter in the air as all did their best to cross the finish line.” The River Hills HOA provided hot dogs, brats, candy, popcorn and drinks and the vendor provided additional options for purchase. “The event was successful due to the support from our community volunteers and donors, the vendors that provided impeccable service, and the generosity of

our neighbors to serve others in need,” said Rule. “Our team is very thankful to all.” The River Hills HOA Social Team was established in June to host year-round neighborhood events to foster fellowship and involvement for the more than 1,100 neighborhood families while supporting 501(c)3 organizations in the surrounding area. During the Fall Festival, River Hills residents donated more than 20 moving boxes filled with items including macaroni cheese, applesauce, peanut butter, granola bars, cereal, protein bars, soup, pasta and other nourishing food to support Seeds of Hope’s signature program, Backpacks of Hope which provides weekend food to students who might otherwise go hungry when school meals are not provided. “Our upcoming events will continue to support those in need,” said Rule. “River Hills HOA looks forward to spending time with our family and our neighbors while serving others in the community.” Upcoming events include the community’s popular Golf Cart Parade with a toy drive benefitting Metropolitan Ministries on Sunday, December 2 and a Pirate Invasion 5K and Fun Run benefitting the Special Operations Warrior Foundation on Saturday, January 12. A crowd of people consisting of all ethnicities and backgrounds gathered together inside the gymnasium for the Third Annual Hispanic Heritage celebration at Campo Family YMCA on October 28. This event gave individuals an opportunity to gain exposure to the foods and cultures of the 22 countries it represented such as Cuba, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and more. More than 100 individuals attended, including non-members and members. A focus group called Hispanos Unidos at Campo Family YMCA created the idea for this event. Hispanos Unidos was established in March 2016 by the Hispanic members at Campo Family YMCA. A Hispanos Unidos volunteer from the group, Victoria Araque, said that this was her first year and loves it. “I am new in Brandon and Campo Family YMCA opened the door for us in regards to the event occurring here,” Araque said. Some of the activities that individuals could participate in included Zumba, other dancing, corn hole and a piñata. A mariachi band also played some tunes, which drew a crowd to the dance floor. People of all ages moved to the music and even

Hernandez. This was his first time going to the event and it meant so much to Hernandez. His grandfather emigrated in the 1960’s from Mexico to Chicago, Illinois. “I feel excited to be in an area where my culture is celebrated,” Hernandez said. Charity Needs Bikes Donated For Santa’s Visit To Panhandle Area

By Amanda Boston

Pat Simmons (center with scissors) is pictured at the Valrico/FishHawk ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the nonprofit Bikes For Christ.

Bikes For Christ puts bicycles and Bibles into the hands of those less fortunate. Founded in 2016 by local resident Patrick (Pat) Simmons, the nonprofit serves the homeless, veterans, seniors and underprivileged children. Pairing his passions for cycling and helping others, Simmons said, "I want to do this the rest of my life, providing transportation for those in need and sharing the Gospel." The recipients are striving to better their situation, and bikes provide a mode of transportation to employment, doctor appointments and more. Along with every bicycle distributed, a Bible or some other scriptural text is given to remind them that God loves and cares for them. Bikes For Christ accepts bicycles from the counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk and Pasco and then redistributes them through several different agencies. The organization also welcomes monetary donations, as the majority of donated bikes require maintenance, and parts are needed for repairs.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, the focus is predominately on providing bicycles for underprivileged children. This holiday season will be a bit busier for Simmons as he will also be delivering bikes to children living in the Panhandle’s Bay County in midDecember. For 38 years, Officer Mike Jones, also known as ‘Salvage Santa,’ has been repairing and gifting bikes to less fortunate children in Bay County. Unfortunately, Salvage Santa’s house and workshop were devastated after Hurricane Michael hit the Panhandle on October 10. After learning about Jones’ plight, Simmons decided to collect and deliver bikes to Bay County to ensure that Salvage Santa’s Christmas mission continues. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Bikes For Christ on November 8 at the Valrico/FishHawk Chamber of Commerce. "I was extremely happy with the turn out we had for the ribbon cutting,” said Simmons. “Not only were people excited about the overall work that we do, but business owners really stepped up to offer their locations as drop off points for our holiday drive for bikes both here for the work we do in our area and to take to the Panhandle for the Salvage Santa project." Bikes For Christ is always accepting roadworthy bikes and monetary donations. If you would like to donate, please visit www.Bikes4Christ.com/donations or call 533-9177.

Civil War Veterans Honored With New Memorial At Veterans Park

By Kate Quesada

Hillsborough County dedicated a memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Tampa last month to those who fought in the Civil War.

A new group of the nation’s finest are now represented at Hillsborough County’s Veterans Memorial Park and Museum. Last month, Hillsborough County dedicated a memorial to veterans killed during the Civil War. According to Hillsborough County Media Representative Todd Pratt, soldiers on both sides of the war are historically represented and honored at the memorial. “The two gray granite monuments that make up the memorial represent the west and east sides of the Hillsborough River; the blue marble strip between the monuments represents the river,” said Pratt. Each monument displays historical images related to Hillsborough County’s connection to the Civil War, including the gunships, the Cow Cavalry, the Battle of Fort Brooke and the Battle of Tampa. The names of Hillsborough County

Veterans killed in action during the Civil War and Florida naval casualties from 1861 to 1865 are inscribed on the monuments. The monuments are part of the Hillsborough County Veterans Memorial Park and Museum which was established to provide a centralized location for residents to honor veterans of all eras. Additional war memorials at the park include Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Vietnam,

Four Bloomingdale Baseball Players Commit On National Signing Day

Shortstop Nico Saladino signs with South Florida State College.

The Bloomingdale Bulls baseball program had four players sign on National Signing Day on November 14. Bryce Hazzard, Nico Saladino, Myles Caba and Kyle Merkle all made commitments to play baseball at the next level. “It means the world to me,” said Hazzard. “It’s a dream come true. I’ve wanted to play college baseball ever since I was a little kid, and I’m happy that I was finally able to achieve that milestone that I’ve set for myself. I’m very grateful.” The senior switch-hitting outfielder has been a starter on varsity all four years for the Bulls. Last season he hit .295 with 23 hits and 13 runs batted in. He plans on majoring in business and minoring in sports management at Nova Southeastern. He will join former Bulls’ teammate and fellow outfielder, Nate Chevalier. Last year’s team MVP for the Bulls, Nico Saladino, has committed to play baseball for the South Florida State College Panthers. Florida Orthopedic Institute Announces Athlete Of The Week Award Florida Orthopedic Institute (FOI) recently announced its Athlete of the Week award winners for the week that ended on October 19. The winners were picked by their head coaches for their leadership and commitment to their teams. Jonathan Owen is one of Bloomingdale’s team captains for cross country, and Tessa Pignataro is a member of the school’s volleyball team. Both students have lofty goals for their senior seasons. Owen wants to make it to the state finals and Pignataro hopes to lead her team to a district championship. “I first started running my freshman year, and was really inspired by the juniors and seniors, mainly Bo Benik and Colin Boutin,” said Owen. “Not only was I inspired by how well they did, I was also inspired by their dedication and how well they led the team. I really want to go to states one time before I graduate and this is the last chance I have,” said Owen. Owen was nominated by cross country Head Coach Jennifer Beach. “Jon is an amazing team player and

Head Volleyball Coach Justeen Coulson for her leadership abilities. “Tessa is one of the hardest working kids I have ever coached,” said Coulson. “She shows up every day committed to excellence and committed to her team. She is a selfless athlete who understands the true concept of the word teammate. I am so impressed with Tessa on a daily basis and I know she will succeed in anything she sets her mind to because she already does that every day as a high school student,” Coulson said. Florida Orthopedic Institute’s Athlete of the Week campaign was designed to focus the attention on student-athletes, recognizing them for their hard work and dedication both on and off the field. The Athlete of the Week award can be earned by displaying team leadership or being a team player. “As a senior, I would like to carry on the legacy of winning districts,” said Pignataro. “It would make it the third year in a row of winning the championship. I want my team to accomplish this goal. If we play to our full potential, we are more than capable of winning,” said Pignataro.

Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays*December 2018 Repeal Day * Monkey Day * Festivus For The Rest Of Us * Fruitcake Day Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesser-known holidays throughout the year. December is a month filled with love, humanity and gift giving events like Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year’s Eve. December is the last month in the Gregorian calendar and its name is based on the Latin term for 10. In the Roman calendar, December was the 10th month until the addition of January and February at the beginning of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, December has the shortest daylight hours and marks the beginning of winter. Although Christmas gets most of the attention this time of year, December is a month full of other fun days as well. If you need a moment to forget the stress that sometimes comes with the major holidays, there's probably a few days here that can bring joy throughout the month. Let’s start this month with Repeal Day, on Wednesday, December 5. On this day in 1933 the 21st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was ratified, thereby

repealing the 18th Amendment, which banned the sale, distribution and consumption of alcohol. This prohibition period started on January 5 1919 and officially ended on December 5 1933. The 21st Amendment brought back the neighborhood pubs and breweries to society. Celebrate the end of prohibition by stopping by your local bar, tavern, winery, dis-

began including Monkey Day in his artwork and Fetus-X comic strips as well as promoting it online along with other artists. Since then, Monkey Day has been celebrated internationally in America, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom. So go bananas on this day and grab the kids and head to the Lowery Park Zoo or Busch Gardens to get your

tillery or brewery and enjoy a drink. There are so many places to celebrate, but if you’re looking for someplace that can really appreciate this day, visit Ciro’s Speakeasy in Tampa. Ciro’s is a throwback to prohibition era. You will need to call ahead for the secret password. Visit www.cirostampa.com. After celebrating the end of bootlegging, there is no better time to honor our special primate friends than on Monkey Day on Friday, December 14. While the holiday is mainly about monkeys, it also celebrates other primates such as apes, chimpanzees and lemurs. The day was accidently created in 2000 when artist Casey Sorrow jokingly scribbled Monkey Day on a friend’s calendar. He then

fill of monkeys. Use #MonkeyDay to post on social media. To donate to monkey causes, visit www. monkeyday.com/links/. If you are looking for a holiday that serves as an alternative to the commercialization of Christmas, than look no further than Festivus, on Sunday, December 23. Festivus gained notoriety on the critically acclaimed sitcom, Seinfeld. It appeared on the episode entitled ‘The Strike’ that aired December 18, 1997. Although Festivus originated as a way to make light of traditional holidays and ease the stress of family get-togethers, today it has grown into a fun holiday for the entire family. According to Festivus tradition, the Festivus meal is accompanied with the airing of grievances, followed by the feats

of strength, where the head of the household wrestles with other guests. So grab an aluminum pole and greet people by saying ‘Happy Festivus for the rest of us!’ Thursday, December 27 is National Fruitcake Day, and no, we are not talking about your crazy Uncle Bob. This is the day to pay homage to the controversial and sometimes misunderstood fruitcake. This cake is traditionally made with chopped candied or dried fruit, nuts, spices and alcohol. Many people give fruitcakes as gifts for the holidays, however, more than 38 percent of people say they re-gift their fruitcakes. Nevertheless, fruitcakes have remained popular for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians buried their loved ones with fruitcakes because they believed the fruitcake was essential for the journey to the afterlife. The small cakes could withstand long voyages without spoiling. Publix, Winn Dixie, and commercial bakeries such as Harry & David all get their fruitcake candies from local company, Paradise, Inc., located on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Plant City. There’s a 90 percent chance that if you’re eating a fruitcake, the candied fruit originated from Paradise, Inc. Download coupons and find locations for the best fruitcakes at www.paradisefruitco.com. December boasts many other fun holidays including National Pastry Day, Violin Day, Poinsettia Day and National Eggnog Day, just to name a few. For a complete list, visit www.holidayinsights.com.

She originally worked at the store for eight years for the former owner when it was called Bloomingdale Pet Supply. It had been a feed store that specialized in horses for over 40 years. The store had shut down, prompting customers to look for Albright, who had been helping them. The landlord of the property then approached Albright about opening up her own store. Albright said that the neighborhood came together and helped her fix up the store before reopening. She sells food for a lot of different small animals, including, but not limited to cats, dogs and now birds as well. Albright recently had customers ask about the possibility of carrying exotic bird feed. She was able to order a shipment from Kentucky and has had 30 customers within a week come in for the feed. She said that nobody else carries this particular feed in Florida. Albright gives pet nutrition advice as

well. She has helped dogs with itchy skin and health problems holistically through changes in their diets. She tries to be proactive with a pet’s nutritional health by feeding them according to their needs. People often bring Albright animals that need a home and she helps find a place for them. When she sees an animal in need, she wants to help them. She always has cats and dogs in her store. She has customers that come in with their kids to play with the cats. She does a low-cost shot clinic once a month on the first Saturday of the month from 2-3 p.m. She also provides preventative meds such as Heartguard and Trifexis. No appointments are necessary. She is also doing a charity drive for St. Francis Animal Rescue for the holiday season. People can buy pet products and place them in a box at the store. Albright credits her store’s success to the fact that people love their pets and they are more conscious of how to take better care of them. “People are happy when you help them with their pets,” Albright said. “Now dogs are in our houses, they are a part of our family, they sleep in our beds. For some people, that’s their companion. I think that we just want to take care of them better, we want to feed them better, we want them to live longer. Times are tough, people want that animal to hug on. They just need that companionship.” Kim’s is located at 3110 Lithia Pinecrest Rd., Brandon. Call 684-3663 or visit www.kimsnaturalpetfoods.com.

Sea Scouts Offer High Adventure Opportunities For Boy Scouts

“The Sea Scouts are the best kept secret in scouting,” said Tom McMullen, Committee Chair of the local Sea Scouts. The program has been around since 1912, and is a part of the Boy Scouts of America. Tampa General Hospital is considered one of the top 50 hospitals in the nation. With such a rich tradition and history dating back as far as 1926, it is no wonder that Tampa General has become a trusted name in the community. In September, Tampa General opened its newest urgent care center at 799 W Lumsden Rd. in Brandon. The 4,000 sq. ft. facility consists of five exam rooms, a laboratory room and an x-ray room. Marion Dawkins, manager of ambulatory business operations is excited to get the word out to the families in the community. The clinic is averaging about 70 people per week since the doors opened last month and the volume is increasing daily. “TGH Urgent Care is a walk-in clinic that provides medical treatment for a variety of non-emergency conditions,” said Dawkins. “Some of our most common conditions treated are sinus infections, cough colds and flu, ear infections, minor cuts and bruises and urinary tract infections.” Having an urgent care clinic available for non-emergency conditions allows the emergency rooms located at local hospi-

tals to focus on life threatening, emergency conditions. “Typically, wait times at an urgent care are much less than they would be in an emergency room,” said Dawkins. “Urgent cares also provide care at a much lower cost than an emergency room would for non-life threating illnesses.” Providing the same high quality care to patients that all other Tampa General facilities provide, it also links patients’ electronic medical records as the hospital and other primary care clinics. “So, if you’ve ever been seen at a Tampa General Hospital facility, we have access to your past records, which makes for a more seamless patient experience and for better quality of care,” said Dawkins. The clinic is also open seven days a week. The hours are Monday to Friday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. It also has an on site laboratory and x-ray capabilities for one-stop convenience. “This urgent care center allows us to provide care in the communities that we serve,” said Adam Smith, vice president of ambulatory services. “It is an important part of the strategic plan for Tampa General Hospital to expand our services and provide patients convenient care where they live and work.” Tampa General Hospital Urgent Care is located at 799 W Lumsden Rd. in Brandon.
