Walk Thru Bethlehem Continues Free Holiday Tradition At Kings Avenue Baptist Take a step over thousands of years into the past and experience the 32nd annual Walk Thru Bethlehem, hosted at Kings Avenue Baptist Church in Brandon, an authentic reenactment that brings the biblical city and story of Jesus Christ’s birth to life from the pages of Holy Scripture. Guests will be taken through a 2030 minute guided tour of Bethlehem, where people were taxed as subjects of Caesar Augustus. Attendees can meet all kinds of citizens who existed back then, learn of their various trades and lives, and go through a myriad of booths to learn all about the ancient city, ending the journey with the holy spectacle of Jesus' birth in a humble manger. Mary and Joseph brought Jesus Christ into the world in the modest setting of Bethlehem. Walk Thru Bethlehem began as a very small production with the idea of bringing Bethlehem from the Bible as a tangible encounter for the Christian community to enjoy. It serves to unify the community and to offer free entertainment to guests. Thirty-two years later, Walk Thru Bethlehem has become one of the largest events in the Tampa Bay area. The greatest strength of Walk Thru only the people, but the individuals as Bethlehem is how it can save people well. through its physical story and provide “We want everyone to receive togetherness for the community. Turner, the Director of Marketing for Walk Thru Bethlehem. “This is the truth of Christmas, and the actors and volunteers are passionate about sharing that.” It is all thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who help make the event happen. Through the effort of youth groups, Boy Scouts, retirees and church members, Walk Thru Bethlehem is born. The event starts production in September with threehour workdays, and by December construction is complete and focus goes into filling the booths. This year, there is a change in one of the booths. Someone acting as Jesus will be reading Scripture from the Bible. Walk Thru Bethlehem is a free event available to all. Bell Shoals Baptist Church is known for its exceptional music and worship ministry. Its annual Christmas musical production has become a tradition for many living in the Brandon community. Join Bell Shoals Baptist Church as it presents Light Has Come on Friday, December 7 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, December 8 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The original production features a five-person cast that proclaims the good news of Jesus’ birth in a minimalistic and contemporary way. Shortly after last year’s production, Jason Millsaps, the pastor of music and worship, and BJ Davis, the music director, began collaborating on the project. The duo bounced ideas off one another and enlisted Martha Frazier, a professional scriptwriter, to write the script. The original production features new songs written by Millsaps and his worship staff. With the birth of Jesus retold every Christmas, Millsaps desired to reach everyone and explained, “We wanted to write the story of creation to Jesus’ resurrection in a way that people would be captured either hearing it for the first time

or the millionth time.” From curtain up to curtain down, more than 250 people from the church have worked together to put on a production of this magnitude. In addition to Millsaps, Davis and the five-per-

son cast, the show employs a 150voice choir, 25-piece orchestra, compelling video work created by tech support, wardrobe specialists, scene builders, childcare helpers and more.

By Amanda Boston

The cast and crew have been rehearsing since August. Tickets are $8 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.bellshoals.com or www.itickets.com. The show will last approximately 75 minutes. Millsaps said, “I hope and pray people will walk away from this show changed and that people will find hope in what seems to be such a hopeless world.” He continued, “We are telling the greatest story ever told, a story that will change your life forever.“ Bell Shoals Baptist Church is located at 2102 Bell Shoals Rd. in Brandon. For more information about the show, please contact the church at 689-4229 or visit www.bellshoals.com/christmas.

Charity Needs Bikes Donated For Santa’s Visit To Panhandle Area

By Amanda Boston

Pat Simmons (center with scissors) is pictured at the Valrico/FishHawk ribbon-cutting ceremony honoring the nonprofit Bikes For Christ.

Bikes For Christ puts bicycles and Bibles into the hands of those less fortunate. Founded in 2016 by local resident Patrick (Pat) Simmons, the nonprofit serves the homeless, veterans, seniors and underprivileged children. Pairing his passions for cycling and helping others, Simmons said, "I want to do this the rest of my life, providing transportation for those in need and sharing the Gospel." The recipients are striving to better their situation, and bikes provide a mode of transportation to employment, doctor appointments and more. Along with every bicycle distributed, a Bible or some other scriptural text is given to remind them that God loves and cares for them. Bikes For Christ accepts bicycles from the counties of Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk and Pasco and then redistributes them through several different agencies. The organization also wel-

comes monetary donations, as the majority of donated bikes require maintenance, and parts are needed for repairs. With Christmas rapidly approaching, the focus is predominately on providing bicycles for underprivileged children. This holiday season will be a bit busier for Simmons as he will also be delivering bikes to children living in the Panhandle’s Bay County in midDecember. For 38 years, Officer Mike Jones, also known as ‘Salvage Santa,’ has been repairing and gifting bikes to less fortunate children in Bay County. Unfortunately, Salvage Santa’s house and workshop were devastated after Hurricane Michael hit the Panhandle on October 10. After learning about Jones’ plight, Simmons decided to collect and deliver bikes to Bay County to ensure that Salvage Santa’s Christmas mission continues. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Bikes For Christ on November 8 at the Valrico/FishHawk Chamber of Commerce. Bikes For Christ is always accepting roadworthy bikes and monetary donations. If you would like to donate or become a drop off location, please visit www.Bikes4Christ.com/donations or call 533-9177.

During His ministry, Jesus performed more than 40 miracles including healing the sick, changing the natural elements of nature and even raising people from the dead. A miracle is considered an event that occurs outside the bounds of natural law. Each month, we will take a closer look at one of His miracles to understand the depth of His love for us. Understanding the miracles of Jesus can change your life, and it all begins with believing through faith. The first recorded miracle in the New Testament is told in John 2:1-11 when Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding. Because this was Jesus’ first public miracle, it is often considered one of the most memorable miracles to many Christians today. It was certainly important not only because it's truly a work of the supernatural but also because it carries a message. Before Jesus began His public ministry, he was invited to a wedding in Cana with His mother Mary and several of His disciples. During the wedding dinner, Mary told Jesus that the guests had consumed all the wine. Jesus spotted six large stone water jugs, the kind used during ceremonial washing, each holding from 20 to 30 gallons. Jesus summoned several of the servants to fill the jugs with water and take them to the host of the wedding. The host took a sip from the jug

and realized that the water had been turned into wine. The host didn’t immediately recognize that a miracle just took place; however, the servants who had drawn the water knew. What Jesus did through this miracle at the wedding in Cana of Galilee was the first time He revealed His supernatural abilities in public. We can learn a valuable lesson through this first miracle—Jesus can provide for our needs. We may not get everything we want, but the power of the Lord can meet your needs to empower you to pursue a deeper relationship with God. Another lesson is to focus less on the wine and instead focus more on the winemaker. The wedding guests in the Bible story never got to know the ‘Winemaker’ because they were too focused on the wine. Many of us place our focus on the wrong things. Maybe you are focused on a new fancy car or buying a bigger house. Whatever it is, don't let it take your eyes off of the Lord. The purpose of Jesus’ miracle of turning the water into wine was explained further in John 2:11: "This, the first of His signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and manifested His glory. And His disciples believed in Him." God doesn't want us to only believe in miracles, signs and phenomena. He wants us to believe in Him and use our beliefs to cause others to believe in Him. The purpose of His plan is to show His love for us, not for us to have our fill of wine, or money, or other physical things of this earth. God wants us to hear Him and trust Him, and He responds by His blessings in our lives.

FishHawk Pastor Challenges Congregation To Think Globally

By Amanda Boston

When most westerners think about India, visions of the Taj Mahal or perhaps the slums of Mumbai typically come to mind. Yet, 40% of India’s population is comprised of people groups who live in primitive villages. With 1.3 billion inhabitants, India has the most unreached people groups—meaning those who have never heard the name of Jesus Christ. Deemed as ‘untouchables’ or ‘outcasts,’ these groups live in poor sanitary conditions with no clean water, electricity, or hope for this life or the next. With more than 60 years experience in ministry in India through founder/missionary, Dr. William Scott, Glad Tidings India (GTI) has a mission to bring the good news of Jesus Christ to India by training and equipping the indigenous church. GTI partners with an Indian ministry that was founded by Dr. Scott and his wife in 1975. This Indian ministry is administered by indigenous leadership with 15-40 years tenure, trained and mentored by the Scotts and others. A train-the-trainer approach eliminates the high over-

head cost for staff while it exponentially multiplies the gospel. Through a grassroots strategy, local Indian churches along GTI’s partner ministry in India work to identify unreached people groups. GTI pairs up the identified people group with individuals, churches or Christian organizations that will financially support them—in order to satisfy basic needs, improve education and bring the gospel message. In partnership with GTI, The Chapel At FishHawk has adopted one of the unreached people groups called the Kotia tribe, which numbers about 57,000 people. Byron Hack, the director of GTI, explained the ministry’s strategy that begins with teaching the very basics such as nutrition, hygiene and literacy. “It’s a three-year program, and in

the first year, we teach 450 adults to read,” said Hack. "From that [literacy class] usually at least 40 percent of the students accept Christ, and many house churches or small groups are formed. In the second year, 12 church planters are trained in evangelism, discipleship and planting multiple churches. These church planters go out and disciple the house churches and do door-to-door ministry. In the third year, we teach an additional 300 adults to read and send 1,000 children to Children's Bible School." The first step in the new partnership between The Chapel At FishHawk and GTI included a reverse offering called the Luke 19 Project, which is based on the Bible’s parable of the talents. Each member of the congregation was given $10 and chal-

lenged to multiply the money in eight weeks time. From 10-year-olds designing and selling candles with Bible verses to families hosting a movie night, Chapel members have been busily laboring to multiply their reverse offering money. The Luke 19 Project increases awareness of global missions and the Great Commission within the congregation without tapping into the church's budget. It also provides the ability for members to see God working in their lives by using their time and talents to further the gospel. In addition to improved literacy, GTI also installs borewells, expands Christian schools, rehabilitates villages, provides sewing machines for women and sends children to Children’s Bible School (CBS). For more about GTI or to donate, visit www.gladtidingsindia.org. To find out how your church can participate in a Luke 19 Project, email Byron at byron@gladtidingsindia.org or call 909-957-9352.

By Derek Maul Dear friends, let’s love each other, because love is from God, and everyone who loves is born from God and knows God. The person who doesn’t love does not know God, because God is love. This is how the love of God is revealed to us: God has sent his only Son into the world so that we can live through him. – 1 John 4:7-9 People often ask about my inspirations as a writer. I do read quite a bit, but mostly – for me – it’s about paying attention. Or, as Rebekah put it when asked how she prepares for her Sunday message, “I try to stay awake.” Then sometimes I actually take notes in church. Yes, those little two-inch pencils in the pews turn out to be there for a reason, and I’ve been known to scribble all over my bulletin. A recent topic was the relationship between gratitude and belief. There’s some good science out there now that confirms some of what we already know, that a grateful spirit is associated with benefits such as lower blood pressure, positive emotions, and general well-being. “But gratitude without purpose,” she said, “is nothing more than a good feeling.” That’s where belief comes in. It turns out that at its historical heart, the word ‘believe’ carries the root ‘be-love.’

If we use that in context we find ourselves saying, “I belove in God.” “I belove my family.” “I belove my church.” Love is the activating force that gives purpose to what we are grateful for, love is what turns belief into action. I belove Jesus and find that it is impossible to just sit there in church limited to feeling good, all warm and fuzzy inside with thanks and belief. Love propels – love compels – me to action. Love turns belief into service and purposeful change. So, thanks to my wife Rebekah for preaching stuff that inspires my writing. Thanks for making good theology such a catalyst for change. Come to think of it, I belove in us. I am grateful and I belove our life together.

Gratitude

Family Faith Fest Honors 50-Year Anniversary Of St. Petersburg’s Diocese

By Amanda Boston

Bishop Gregory Parkes of the Diocese of St. Petersburg organized this free fest in honor of the Diocese’s 50 years of ministry.

A last minute change of venue did not stop 10,000 people from the Tampa Bay area from flooding the Florida State Fairgrounds on October 27. In celebration of 50 years of ministry, the Diocese of St. Petersburg held a free celebratory music and ministry festival. Initially, the Family Faith Fest was to take place at Tampa’s Al Lopez Park, but due to a wetter than average fall, the grounds at the park were too saturated and posed a safety hazard. After 18 months of planning and only four days before the festivities were to kickoff, the fest was relocated. Teresa L. Peterson, the Director of Communications at the Diocese of St. Petersburg, commented on the venue change, "God always has a plan, and it's always better than our plan, so we have to just trust Him." “The Lord blessed us with a beautiful day. It’s a day of fun, music, activities for the kids, great food and a time

Jeremy Camp's scheduled performance was a massive draw for many attending the Family Faith Fest. Camp has 41 radio No. 1 hits and sold more than 4.5 million albums.

to get together and celebrate our faith,” said Bishop Gregory Parkes of the Diocese of St. Petersburg. "We wanted this to be a gift to the people— not just to those who are Catholic but to the community as well. So we extended an open arms invitation to everyone." The main stage featured chart-topping Christian music artists Jeremy

Camp and Colton Dixon, along with other musical performers. Fest-goers could also visit the ‘Educational Village’ to learn about local schools or head over to the ‘Ministry Village’ to visit with representatives from a variety of charities. A secondary stage showcased cultural performances throughout the day celebrating the Diocese’s diversity and history.

“We have such diversity in the church, and I love how we all come together from all different backgrounds to celebrate and worship Jesus Christ,” said Peterson. "There're so many distractions in the world and this is just a time where we can focus on what's important." Concluding the day was a celebration of Mass and Holy Communion with Bishop Parkes as the principal celebrant and concelebrants Bishop Robert Lynch; Monsignor Robert Morris, Vicar General; and Father Joseph Waters, Judicial Vicar. The Diocese of St. Petersburg encompasses the counties of Pinellas, Hillsborough, Hernando, Pasco and Citrus and includes 74 parishes, six missions, 48 schools and early childhood centers and more. Certified Master Cleaners At Accent American Perfect For Any Job When your home’s carpeting and interior is damaged, there’s an easy way to determine who to hire to remedy it: check the credentials. Lisa Jordan, co-owner of Accent American Cleaning & Disaster Restoration, has the long list of the company’s credentials on the back of her business card. She said her husband, co-owner Ken Jordan, is the man for any job. “If he can’t get it clean, then it’s not getting clean,” Lisa said. In 1985, Ken was in search for work. He went on a ride along with a carpet cleaning service after seeing a help wanted ad, but realized something wasn’t right: the business would estimate a cheap price for a job and then jack up the price upon arrival. Frustrated and wanting to be his own boss, Ken bought used equipment and started his own business. Years later after meeting a master cleaner from Pinellas County, Ken became a master cleaner and restorer, earning the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. Ken won an international spot and stain removal contest five times, and is often called on by area law firms to be an expert witness on cleaning and restoration in court.

Lisa explained that while other masters of the craft are now soley instructors, Ken takes his thousands of hours in the classroom and field to each Accent American client. “He’s the one on the job,” Lisa said. “He’s the one supervising everything, his knowledge is there in the field; when you call us, and you’re the one getting all that knowledge in your home.” Accent American clients include professional work spaces, realty and doctor’s offices, as well as residential spaces. Ken and Lisa are currently working on the kitchens at Tropicana Field, a client Lisa said they earned through referral. Service members, including military, police, firefighters and EMS, will always receive a 10% discount on any cleaning services. Chip and Joanna Gaines Magnolia Market Silos Will Host Sunday Church Services

The Magnolia Market Silos near Waco, Texas have been the site of vendor markets and family-friendly celebrations. Now, it can add the meeting place for church services to its list of venues. Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines found out that a church in Waco called ‘Church Under The Bridge’ would have to vacate its usual meeting place under an overpass of Interstate 35 due to construction work beginning in March. They invited Pastor Jimmy Dorrell and his congregation to meet at the Silos on Sundays. Dorrell gratefully accepted the Gaines' offer. Chip Gaines said he recalled Pastor Dorrell making waves with his new ministry back when he attended

Baylor University. "About a month ago, I read about how the I35 project would impact his church. I was sitting in my office one day, day-dreaming, thinking about making a commitment, and we reached out to Jimmy," he told the newspaper. "He came over to the Silos, and we agreed it would make a great fit geographically. We said, 'Let's do it,' and shook hands on it." Pastor Dorrell said his church has a one-year agreement with the Magnolia Company to use the Silos at no charge. He told the newspaper that ultimately, the church will return to its home under the bridge.

that's why God has him at NBC. Dungy says Christian athletes should be free to talk about their faith in the same way other athletes speak about issues that are important to them. "I think people have to understand that Christian athletes have the same ability to espouse their views as anyone else has and if we ask them a question about, what is allowing them to play well, and they say, 'It's my faith in Christ' or 'It's the Holy Spirit,' we can't hold that in and we can't begrudge them of that," he said.

Merry Merry Christmas

Joel Smallbone and younger brother Luke Smallbone comprise the Christian pop and rock duo ‘for King & Country.’ Originally from Sydney, Australia, they’ve lived in the Nashville area since 1991. Since bursting onto the scene in 2010 with their debut album Crave, which peaked at No. 4 on Top Christian Albums, they’ve built a large fan base that’s continuously expanding. Much of that success is word-of-mouth response from their exciting concerts. There seems to be a genuine buzz in the Christian genre for the duo. To date, the Smallbone brothers, who claimed two GRAMMY® trophies in 2015, have collected eight top hits on Billboard’s hybrid Hot Christian Songs Chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales. More Than 100 Area Pastors Join Vice President Mike Pence At The White House

By Cheryl Johnston

More than 100 Central Florida pastors were privileged on October 9 to attend a White House briefing with U. S. Vice President Mike Pence and other governmental agency faith directors. On relatively short notice, area church leaders and All-Pro Pastors Founder Paul Pickern were asked to invite others to attend the informational session in Washington, D.C. Of the three-hour gathering, Pastor Pickern shared, “We were there to learn how our current government has appointed Agency Faith Directors in the various departments. Eight different representatives shared how their department funcMore than 100 pastors from Central Florida gathered at the White House to meet with Vice President Mike Pence and numerous agency faith directors.

tions, provided contact information and remained afterward to answer questions. We sensed this administration is all-in to help the Church fulfill its responsibility to care for

widows, orphans and those in need.” Pastor Greg Dumas of The Crossing Church enjoyed seeing “the collective number of pastors and churches represented in one place and the good relationships formed or

rekindled,” as well as “so many Bible-believing Christians in and around the White House.” Pastor Dumas explained, “They were actively seeking engagement from pastors, churches and the entire faith-based community. I was reminded how influential and powerful the Church in America, and those who represent Christ, really are.” He added, “I was also struck by this administration's efforts to both pre-

serve and defend our religious liberties." Pastor Kevin Wynne of First Baptist Church of Durant, a former U.S. Marine, shared, “Every speaker spoke about how essential the Church body is in the recovery. They clearly know and understand 2 Chronicles 7:14 verbatim, as it was stated several times during the gathering. One speaker emphasized that churches can boldly exercise their faith and share the salvation message of Jesus Christ without feeling ‘political correctness’ pressure. With leaders from several denominations in attendance, we felt completely unified as one body while our government took this step in seeking fervent prayer for God to heal America.” Pierre Chestang, Pastor of The Bridge Worship Community in Brandon, said, “Vice President Pence, in his own special way, as did several others, explained many good things are happening in the current administration, especially in connection with religious freedom, so churches have opportunities to help more people. The intent is to open up the various avenues through which the church and government can work together.” All Pro Pastors is a local ministry with a purpose to strengthen pastors by encouraging them to garner support with one another. Christmas Books To Helps Celebrate The Season

By Kelly Wise Valdes

The season of Christmas is a time of reflection and joy; however, it can also be a time of angst and sorrow for many people. Celebrating the birth of Jesus often becomes secondary to the commercialism of the holiday. Sometimes we are robbed of our joy during this season – maybe we aren’t financially able to give the gifts we would like, maybe this is the first Christmas since the passing of a loved one, maybe you are unable to spend the holiday with your family. Know that the celebration of Christmas is not a competition. Jesus was born into the world to save us from our sins, and that alone is a reason to celebrate. In spite of the difficulties, the worries, the hustle and bustle, look for the joy in the real reason of Christmas. Some of the below books may help in getting back on track and focusing on the birth of Christ this holiday season.

Jesus Calling for Christmas By: Sarah Young

Savor the season with this beautiful Christmas edition, a perfect gift that includes 50 seasonal devotion selections along with Scripture, quotes and festive and breathtaking color photography. This book is a treasure your family will enjoy for years to come. From the beginning of Advent to Christmas Day and beyond, enjoy the presence of the One who understands you completely and loves you perfectly.

The 25 Days of Christmas: A Family Devotional to Help You Celebrate Jesus By: James Merritt

Amidst multiple trips to the mall, endless gift-wrapping and constant holiday baking, it's easy to lose sight of the real reason for the season – the birth of Jesus. Preparing you and your family to experience a more meaningful Christmas, this beautifully illustrated Advent devotional offers a December's worth of read-aloud stories, inspiring Scripture verses and festive activities.
