Increased access to books in the home is thought to increase children’s reading proficiency, yet the U.S. Department of Education estimates that up to 61% of lowincome families do not have any books for their children at home. Children may not have access to their local library simply because of distance or parents not having time to take them during the day. It’s a need Chris Rexroad saw in her own backyard and worked to fix. Rexroad, a VPK teacher with Primrose South Tampa, knew how important building early reading skills is to a student’s later success: “I’m a big proponent of reading. This is one of the major things that I do with my kids. I don’t just want to teach them the skills they need to be readers, but I want to get them excited about reading.” However, when she drove home to Brandon, she noticed a need in speaking to the children who live on her street for whom she often buys books. This is where the idea for a Little Free Library took root. With the help of her Bay Life Bible study group who worked together to build the container to house the books, a grant from Thrivent Financial, and book donations from Primrose of South Tampa, Rexroad is set to have the grand opening by the end of February or early March. Once open, the Little Free Library works as a “take a book, return a book”

free book exchange that builds community and a love of reading. “I was a huge reader as a kid. I want kids to have access to books,” Rexroad reiterates, as she already sees the love of reading developing in the few children who live next door. She cannot wait to expand this service to her entire neighborhood. For more information or to donate, email rexroad8839@gmail.com and keep checking Facebook for grand opening information: www.facebook.com/Brandon-Little-FreeLibrary-165528494089586/. Visit littlefreelibrary.org for more information on the non-profit or to start your own. The Brandon Little Free Library will be located at 827 Louise St., Brandon, 33511.

Moreover, there is an upper level that allows for a different perspective to view trains. The viewing platform is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. According to Lubrano, “It was constructed to make it appear to be the same era as the station, circa 1909. The nearest other viewing platform would be Folkston, GA.” If you want to see trains, this is the perfect spot. On any given day, 16 to 18 trains pass through the area of the viewing platform. An Amtrak train passes twice a day. In addition, Tropicana Juice cars pass several times a day and a TECO coal train headed to the power plant in Apollo Beach passes by at least three times a week. The mission of the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum Society is to promote and educate visitors about the railroad history and its impact on Eastern Hillsborough County and Plant City. They offer group tours for children of all ages. Admission is free. For info, visit www.willafordrailroadmuseum.com or call 719-6989.

Two Local Residents Author And Illustrate New Children’s Book “The Magic Glove”

By Michelle Colesanti

Kim Ruiz holds a copy of her new children’s book, The Magic Glove.

Local resident Kim Ruiz’ love of writing began in elementary school when she wrote two short illustrated books that she shared with classmates. From there she had poetry published in middle school, and in 2000 she had an article/essay published in a national magazine. Ruiz recently authored her first children’s book called The Magic Glove. ‘What happens when Joey believes his blue winter glove has magical powers? He has fun, makes his chores go by quicker, and cleans up messes before his mom can notice them. Is it magic, or his wonderful imagination? When Grandma and Grandpa stop by for a visit, they are delighted to share a story about Joey's blue glove. And with a twinkle in their eye, they laugh along with Joey and his adventures with his magic glove.’ The Magic Glove is a story of childlike imagination, magic, friendship, family and love. The book is illustrated by Mimi Sweetser, a Valrico resident. Ruiz met Sweetser, who is an instructor at the Campo YMCA, and also an artist. Sweetser expressed interest in illustrating Ruiz’ book, and they met several times discussing styles and layout. Sweetser, who is married and the mom of three boys, completed the paintings for the book last fall. Ruiz owns a small writing busi-

ness, Expressly Written, LLC, which provides writing content for websites, newsletters, brochures, press releases, etc. Her specialty is helping local homeowner associations (HOA’s), in addition to several businesses. Visit www.ExpresslyWritten.com. Ruiz said, “I started writing bimonthly newsletters for South Ridge HOA in Brandon in 2002 when I became an HOA board member. I felt homeowners would benefit from knowing what was happening in our new community as the builder turned it over to homeowners.” She knew that as a first-time homeowner and HOA member, there was a lot to learn.” Also the Publicity Chair for the Alafia River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), she helped create a new website (http://fss-

Florida Strawberry Festival 2018 Theme Is “Building New Memories!” The theme for the 83rd annual Florida Strawberry Festival, March 1-11 in Plant City, is “Building New Memories!” This year, the festival has added new bleacherstyle concert seating that will accommodate 9,200 total guests, is closer to the stage and will be more comfortable for guests, Festival President Paul Davis said. Another change with the GT Grandstands construction project is that the event will no longer offer free seating to headline shows. “This was an extremely difficult decision for us,” Davis said. “But we absolutely had to construct new seating. And when you start crunching the numbers, there was just no way economically for us to offer free seats any longer.” Davis said this year’s theme “points to the new entertainment

February is a time of year when loved ones express their affection for each other by giving and receiving chocolates and flowers. It is nice to remember our pets on this special day, as well. However, it is never in the best interest of our four-legged friends to give them easy access to chocolates or flowers. As many of you already know, if a pet eats chocolate, there can be serious health consequences. Some of the common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea and even seizures. If you suspect that your pet has ingested any amount of chocolate, you may want to call your veterinarian to alert him or her of the situation. Depending on the type of chocolate eaten, you may have a life-threatening situation or you may just have a mess to clean up with no implications. Your vet may ask you to bring your pet into the office immediately so he or she can empty your pet's stomach and give medications to help reverse the effects. Milk chocolate often only causes diarrhea and vomiting, but the ingestion of even a small amount of dark chocolate or baking chocolate can, in some cases, cause death. It is better to give your pet a treat that is made especially for dogs or cats, and keep your own goodies away from curious paws and mouths.

A beautiful bouquet of Valentine's Day flowers also can have serious health consequences for our pets. Curious cats and dogs often can't resist chewing and eating the leaves and petals of a florist's creations, which can cause digestive problems, heart problems, kidney failure, liver disease and/or seizures. That's why it is so important to display your flowers out of your pets' reach. Certain flowers can be toxic if eaten. If you suspect or can confirm that your pet has eaten plant leaves or flower petals, the identity of the plant or flower is crucial in determining its toxicity. You can either call the ASPCA'S National Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435, or contact your local veterinarian. Common flowers and plants-including some often found in your own backyard-that are especially toxic and can be fatal if ingested include: Oleander, Lilies, Sago Palm nuts and seeds, Castor Bean, Azalea, Rhododendron, Chrysanthemum, Peace Lily, Tulip bulbs, Amaryllis, English Ivy and Autumn Crocus. Everyone loves to receive chocolates, flowers or plants on Valentine's Day. By making sure they are kept away from nosy canines or hungry felines, you can enjoy them safely with no fears of accidentally poisoning your pets. And remember to make the day special for pets by giving lots of love, extra attention and a few safe pet treats.

Big Cat Rescue Adds Rare Amur Leopard & Continues Advocacy Efforts

By Michelle Colesanti

Just over 25 years ago, Big Cat Rescue Founder Carole Baskin saved a bobcat kitten at an animal auction from certain death. Naming her Windsong, she had no idea of what the future would hold for both her and the bobcat, but that rescue stole her heart and set the wheels in motion for what would eventually become Big Cat Rescue. Big Cat Rescue’s care for cats that were once abused and can’t live in the wild is near ‘purr’fection. It currently is the ‘fur’ever home to 70 cats. Through the years, the sanctuary has also released 45 wild native Florida bobcats back into the wild. Absorbing noise vibration is the dualaxis front strut and multilink rear suspension with dampers and anti-roll bars. The dual-pinion electric-power steering feels sharp and precise. A brake hold button near the shifter enables the car to stand still up or down a hill till the driver presses on the gas. LOOK & FEEL: It’s got the look, the daring look we must say, with an air scoop on its aluminum hood merging with horizontal LED headlights and centered red “H” and Type R badges. At the rear, nobody can miss the massive wing spoiler and triple exhaust tips. Get behind the wheel and you realize instantly that this is a race-inspired ride with the rounded aluminum shifter knob and well-bolstered sport seats with red/black suede fabric and double red stitches. The black/red theme resonates

throughout the cabin. The center console hosts a Type R serial number plate (our car was No. 932). A MultiInformation Display (i-MID) includes a 7inch LCD screen that displays readings for phone, audio, trip computer and navigation. Also standard are dual auto a/c, 540-watt audio system with subwoofer, sport pedals and a 60/40 split fold rear seat. SAFETY FIRST: Dual front and side airbags, side curtain airbag, fourwheel antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, Vehicle Stability Assist, traction control, side-impact door beams, front/rear crumple zones, limited slip differential, rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights are standard. OUT THE DOOR: $33,900, plus tax, tag, delivery and destination charges. BY THE NUMBERS: Tires, 245/30ZR21; wheelbase, 106.3 inches; length, 179.4 inches; weight, 3,117 pounds; fuel capacity, 12.4 gallons; city, 22 mpg; highway, 28 mpg; Web site, www.honda.com WHY DIG IT: It’s agile, quick, athletic and lively, fun to rev and delivers a punch or two. Just what you would expect of a race car. The only snag, if you can call it that, is finding one at your dealership for the listed MSRP! Good luck with the search. Brandon Running Association Hosts 40th Annual Shamrock Classic Benefit Run

By Nicole Heubusch

Members of Ainsley’s Angels attending last year’s Shamrock Classic.

On Saturday, March 17, the Brandon Running Association will host their 40th Annual Shamrock Classic at O'Brien's Irish Pub on Kings and Lumsden. This family-friendly event is open to walkers and runners and will offer a 10k (6.2 miles), a 5k (3.1 miles), and a 1-mile fun run. There will be a post-race party including bagels, bananas, and beer. This race is a flat course, and St. Patty's Day costumes are encouraged. All proceeds from this event will benefit Ainsley's Angels of Florida. Ainsley's Angels is an organization that aims to build awareness about the special needs community by promoting awareness, providing education, and participating as active members in local communities. Last year, the group raised $3,500 for Ainsley’s Angels, and they hope to raise even more this year. “This is our second year working with Ainsley’s Angels,” said long time Brandon Running Association member, Steve Swift. “We love that this organization gives back to children in need, and we enjoy having some members of the group

join us at the race.” The Brandon Running Association is a not-for-profit organization that has over 150 members. “Our members are all different speeds. We have people that run a sub-eight minute mile and some that run a 16 minute mile. We have a pace for everyone,” said Swift. In addition to hosting the Shamrock Classic every March, the group also hosts the Brandon Half Marathon and 5K in December. All proceeds from this race benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The group also holds weekly group runs all throughout Brandon, from FITniche, JF Kicks, the Campo YMCA, the Brandon Parkway, and more. Memberships (not required to run with the group) are $10 a year and you can attend meetings on the fourth Monday of the month. Coaching services are also available to runners. For information on Ainsley's Angels, visit ainsleysangels.org. For information on the Brandon Running Association and to sign up for the Shamrock Classic, visit brandonrunning.com.
