Creating some fun colorful memories is as close as your own backyard. The Color ’Your Egg’ Run is coming to Newsome High School on Saturday, March 31. It is guaranteed to bring color - lots of color - into your world. Participants are asked to dress up for the event in tutus, grass skirts, fun head wear…it’s a race where fun wins. A typical color run is a 5k race but the Newsome run will be a 5k run/walk with a split in the course where participants can opt to go a mile. It’s perfect for adults and kids. The best part is that both courses, the 5k and the mile, will go through each color station. So whether you go on the long run or the shorter, you will get the exact same amount of color. If you have never been to a color run, now is the time to check it out. Most color runs happen near big cities, which mean a long drive, parking issues and crowds. Why go to that hassle when a color run is happening in Lithia? The Newsome and Randall Seeds of Hope Clubs are leading the effort to create the charity run. What happens at a color station? Well, you get showered with color...colored cornstarch to be exact. It is biodegradable and food safe so it will be

Have A Voice In The Choice Of Tampa Bay’s Next Drinking Water Sources As the Tampa Bay area continues to grow, the region will need more water. Your voice is needed to help decide the next drinking water sources. If you live in Hillsborough, Pasco or Pinellas counties, you are invited to share your opinions on water supply projects at FutureWater.org. Tampa Bay Water, the regional drinking water supplier to the Tampa Bay area, is working on a long-term plan to meet drinking water demands well into the future. Part of the agency’s planning process is collecting community input. “Public input is essential to our planning process,” said Michelle Stom, chief communications officer for Tampa Bay Water.“ By working cooperatively with our member governments, community organizations, businesses and residents, we are able to improve our service to the Tampa Bay community.” There is a short-list of projects to consider, each with its own technical, financial and environmental components. The new sources under consideration include additional seawater and river water, two sources currently serving the region, as well as options that use highly treated reclaimed water as a new source. FutureWater.org offers detailed information on each project, features a video overview, provides the ability to sign-up for a telephone town hall to discuss the projects live, and offers a survey to collect

input. Based on projections, the Tampa Bay area will need to have additional drinking water ready in 2028. Input is needed now to ensure there is enough time for the design, permitting and construction process. Tampa Bay Water’s board of directors is expected to review the projects and community feedback before its December 2018 meeting when the board will be selecting a project or projects to move forward for more study, design and permitting. Planning ahead is always smart, especially when it comes to something as important as drinking water. Now is the time to be part of the conversation — so we have the right supply ready at the right time to keep our region growing and thriving. Visit FutureWater.org to learn more and be heard. Locally, the 15.5-billion gallon C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir makes the region’s water supply more drought resistant, reliable and flexible. Surface water from the Tampa Bypass Canal, Hillsborough and Alafia rivers is stored in the reservoir during wet times. During dry times, when river is unavailable, water stored in the reservoir is withdrawn, treated and blended with other supplies to serve the region. To learn more, visit tampabaywater.org.

Bullfrog Creek Brewing Co. To Open In Erindale Plaza Near Car Wash On The Greens By Kate Quesada
Valrico resident Jamie Ratcliff is realizing a dream this month as he gets ready to open the doors to Bullfrog Creek Brewing Company on Lithia PInecrest Rd. in midMarch. Ratcliff began his brewing journey last year and is very excited about sharing his craft with local beer lovers. The 3,000 sq. ft. brewery and tap room will be housed in Erindale Plaza, next to Car Wash on the Greens, in a space formerly occupied by the Erindale Market and gas station. “The location is a perfect fit for my vision because of the great bones and porch area where we can offer outdoor seating and an area for entertainment,” said Ratcliff, a veteran, born and raised in the Valrico area. Ratcliff, who works closely with the brewery’s production manager, Chanse Haas, recently brought brew master Matt Morrow to the team from Arches Brewery in Atlanta. They plan to offer 16 types of beer on tap with a variety of choices including IPAs, pilsners, porters and stouts. The brewery uses a nano-brewing, smallcapacity system giving it the capability to brew many different types of beers and change out the recipes regularly. Bullfrog Creek will also offer guest taps with cider and other local beers and will have wine available to purchase.
Valrico residents Jamie Ratcliff and Chanse Haas plan to open the doors to Bullfrog Creek Brewing Company in mid-March.
Plans include regularly scheduled food trucks on the weekends and partnerships with local restaurants who will deliver food to the brewery. “As a long time resident, I am so excited to bring craft beer to the Valrico community,” said Ratcliff. “We plan to host a lot of local events focusing on good beer and great service.” In addition to offering drinks and entertainment and a founder’s club opportunity, Ratcliff plans to schedule events where residents can come in and participate in the brewing. “It is such a cool process,” he said. “It starts out as grain and turns into a great beer......all right here in Valrico.” The brewery, located at 3632 Lithia Pinecrest Rd., will be open every day from 12 Noon until 9 or 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends. For more information, call 703-8835 or visit www.bullfrogcreekbrewing.com.

On March 8, we observe International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is “Press for Progress,” and events around the world will celebrate women’s advancements in the political, social and cultural arenas. But right here in the United States, women still face barriers to theirfinancial progress. If you’re a woman, you need to recognize these challenges – and respond to them. So, what are the key obstacles to financial security for a woman? Probably the first thing that comes to mind is the gender wage gap: Women generally earn around 80 cents for every dollar men earn, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. But women also face other threats to their financial security. For one thing, they are far more likely than men to take time away from the workforce to raise a family – and time away means smaller Social Security payments and significantly lower balances in 401(k) plans and other retirement accounts. And women’s roles as caretakers don’t end when their children are grown – in fact, women are twice as likely as their male siblings to end up caring for an elderly parent, according to a Princeton University study. What, then, can you do to help ensure a comfortable retirement and achieve your other financial goals? Here are a few suggestions: • Take full advantage of your employer’s retirement plan. If your employer offers a 401(k) or similar retirement plan, take full advantage of it. Invest as much as you can afford each year, and every time you get a raise, increase your contributions. At the very least, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.
• Invest for the long term. Some evidence shows that women may be more conservative investors than men. But if you want to reach your long-term goals, you will need to consider some growth-oriented investments in your portfolio, factoring in your risk tolerance and time horizon. You may want to consult with a financial professional about the best way to invest for the long term. • Maximize your Social Security. If your spouse is the higher earner, you may want to consider how you can use this disparity to your advantage when you collect Social Security. Specifically, you may be eligible for Social Security benefits based on your spouse’s earnings and Social Security record. You’ll want to consult your tax advisor before making any moves. • Protect yourself from long-term care costs. More than two-thirds of nursing home residents are women, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. And the median rate nationwide for a private room in a nursing home is over $97,000 per year, according to the Genworth 2017 Cost of Care Survey. Medicare generally pays very little for long-term care, so if you ever need these services, you’ll have to find other ways to pay for them. A financial professional can suggest some ideas. As a woman, you face special financial challenges, and striving to overcome them will be a lifelong activity. But it’s worth the effort. Local Teacher Starts Little Free Library To Encourage Reading In Brandon
By Amy Schechter
Increased access to books in the home is thought to increase children’s reading proficiency, yet the U.S. Department of Education estimates that up to 61% of lowincome families do not have any books for their children at home. Children may not have access to their local library simply because of distance or parents not having time to take them during the day. It’s a need Chris Rexroad saw in her own backyard and worked to fix. Rexroad, a VPK teacher with Primrose South Tampa, knew how important building early reading skills is to a student’s later success: “I’m a big proponent of reading. This is one of the major things that I do with my kids. I don’t just want to teach them the skills they need to be readers, but I want to get them excited about reading.” However, when she drove home to Brandon, she noticed a need in speaking to the children who live on her street for whom she often buys books. This is where the idea for a Little Free
ics FREE Diagnost s on ALL Device
Library took root. With the help of her Bay Life Bible study group who worked together to build the container to house the books, a grant from Thrivent Financial, and book donations from Primrose of South Tampa, Rexroad is set to have the grand opening by the end of February or early March. Once open, the Little Free Library works as a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange that builds community and a love of reading. “I was a huge reader as a kid. I want kids to have access to books,” Rexroad reiterates, as she already sees the love of reading developing in the few children who live next door. She cannot wait to expand this service to her entire neighborhood. For more information or to donate, email rexroad8839@gmail.com and keep checking Facebook for grand opening information: www.facebook.com/BrandonLittle-Free-Library-165528494089586/. Visit littlefreelibrary.org for more information on the non-profit or to start your own. The Brandon Little Free Library will be located at 827 Louise St., Brandon, 33511.

How many of your favorite plants were damaged by frost or freeze this winter? And, what were those plants? Were they tropical plants installed in the ground and not suited for our zone, which is 9b? They could have been plants suited for our zone but were not the right plant in the right place. Micro-climates exist in our landscapes, so one plant may survive in a certain place, and in another location the same type plant may not. I’ve witnessed and been told about the demise of several tropical plants in Hillsborough County that are suited for more temperate zones than ours. Some include Poinciana, Mussaenda, Christmas Palm and Jacaranda. What can you do to increase the number of surviving plants? Here are a few tips: -Buy and plant what survived. In my landscape and ours at the Extension office, some survivors include Bulbine, Liriope, Ground orchid, Coontie and St. Bernard’s lily. This, however, depends on the location. -Repeat your successes. -Do not repeat your failures…unless you have a lot of time and money and little to do with either! -If you must have tropicals suited for warmer zones, plant them in a pot placed on a plant coaster with wheels so you can move them inside
more easily. Or grow tropicals on your lanai or front porch in pots and move them closer to the house in colder weather. Planting tropical under mature trees can protect them from frost damage. Can’t live without orchids? Buy a hanging clothes rack or garden cart with wheels. Load the plants on the rack or into the cart, then wheel them inside your garage which can easily be 10-15 degrees warmer than the outside temperature. -Divide and share surviving plants with your friends and ask them to share theirs with you. -Order your own personal and free copy of The FloridaFriendly LandscapingTM Guide to Plant Selection & Landscape Design at the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s website: www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/publications/subject/landscaping. This is a great resource you will use time and time again to select appropriate plants for our zone. In this Guide, we are in the Central region of the state. We hope you will stop by our teaching/demonstration gardens at the Extension office to view our plant selections. Check out our calendar of events at: http://hillsborough.ifas.ufl.edu/calendar.shtml. For horticultural assistance, contact the UF/IFAS Extension Hillsborough County, 744-5519, or visit us at 5339 CR 579 in Seffner.

Ice Age, prehistoric people hunted mammoths, built pyramids along Florida’s coast, and lived in fear of the saber cat, giant lion, and wolf. On Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, the Florida State Fairgrounds will go back in time to a different place, a different Florida, a land long lost. The Tampa Bay Fossil Club presents the 31th annual, FossilFest 2018 – The Ice Age Returns! FossilFest is Florida’s largest prehistoric show where the public can view amazing fossils that were found right here in Florida, as well as, artifacts left behind by Florida’s first people. FossilFest features educational activities for both children and adults designed to teach the public about Florida’s exciting prehistoric past. Vendors will be on hand to sell and trade fossils. “Our goal is to teach Floridians about the prehistoric creatures and people that were here long before us,” said club president Mike Searle. “You don’t have travel to far-away exotic places to find these fossils. Mammoths, wolves, camels, and rhinos lived right here where we live today. Their fossilized remains are everywhere in Florida”, said Searle. On both days, there will be free workshops to teach folks how they can legally hunt for fossils in Florida
and preserve what they find. A highlight of FossilFest is the children's Fossil Mine at Paleo Park. For a small fee, kids can dig through a sand pit to recover actual prehistoric fossils donated by members of the Tampa Bay Fossil Club. Then, at the ‘Learning Table,’ they sit down with a club member who will identify and explain their new treasures. The children keep all the fossils they find. “It’s a wonderful ‘hands-on’ learning experience,” said Club member and Hillsborough County schoolteacher, Patrick McGirk. “You just can’t believe how excited these kids get over finding fossils. They don’t even realize how much they’re learning.” There will be free door prizes, kid’s games, silent auctions, and raffles throughout the weekend. The Tampa Bay Fossil Club is a family oriented organization focusing on paleontology, archaeology, and everything prehistoric. The 31-year-old club hosts numerous field trips, camp outs, gatherings, and adventures throughout its September through May season. FossilFest will take place at the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301 in Tampa from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. -4 p.m. on Sunday. Cost is $8 for adults; children 12 and under are free. Visit www.tampabayfossilclub.com.

Comedian Leslie Norris Townsend To Perform At Bell Shoals Baptist Church
By Amanda Boston
Calling all ladies! Tampa’s FaithTalk radio station presents Ladies Night Out on Thursday, March 22 at Bell Shoals Baptist Church. Grab your girlfriends and get ready for an evening of laughs when Christian Comedian Leslie Norris Townsend takes the stage at 7 p.m. Townsend, also a former beauty queen and grand finalist on Star Search, received her first major break into showbiz performing at Walt Disney World. Shortly after, Hollywood noticed her knack for improvisation and knocked on her door. With 30 plus television appearances, including The Tonight Show and Comedy Central, Townsend easily connects with her audiences through song, dance and comedy. The accomplished performer has also shared the stage with the likes of Robin Williams, Bryan Cranston and Henry Winkler, just to name a few. Touted as part comedy and part testimony, Townsend’s act pulls from her life experience as she recounts her journey from a comedian with a bur-
geoning career in Hollywood to a farmer and stay-at-home mom in rural Ohio. “I wanted a better life for my family, and I couldn’t do that on the road,” explained Townsend. Comedian Leslie Norris Townsend captivates her “So here I audiences through song, was, this prisdance and clean comedy. sy beauty queen in heels, out in the mud and in the middle of nowhere.” “Laughter is so healing,” said Townsend. “It’s important for women to come together and lean on one another. We are going to have a great time at this event.” The fun kicks off at 5 p.m. with a shopping EXPO where ladies can mingle and sample lite hors-d'oeuvres and decadent desserts. For a larger appetite, food trucks will be on the premises. The event takes places on the Bell Shoals Brandon Campus located at 2102 Bell Shoals Rd. in Brandon. Brandon Running Association Hosts 40th Annual Shamrock Classic Benefit Run
By Nicole Heubusch
Members of Ainsley’s Angels attending last year’s Shamrock Classic.
On Saturday, March 17, the Brandon Running Association will host their 40th Annual Shamrock Classic at O'Brien's Irish Pub on Kings and Lumsden. This family-friendly event is open to walkers and runners and will offer a 10k (6.2 miles), a 5k (3.1 miles), and a 1-mile fun run. There will be a post-race party including bagels, bananas, and beer. This race is a flat course, and St. Patty's Day costumes are encouraged. All proceeds from this event will benefit Ainsley's Angels of Florida. Ainsley's Angels is an organization that aims to build awareness about the special needs community by promoting awareness, providing education, and participating as active members in local communities. Last year, the group raised $3,500 for Ainsley’s Angels, and they hope to raise even more this year. “This is our second year working with Ainsley’s Angels,” said long time Brandon Running Association member, Steve Swift. “We love that this organization gives back to children in need, and we enjoy having some members of the group
join us at the race.” The Brandon Running Association is a not-for-profit organization that has over 150 members. “Our members are all different speeds. We have people that run a sub-eight minute mile and some that run a 16 minute mile. We have a pace for everyone,” said Swift. In addition to hosting the Shamrock Classic every March, the group also hosts the Brandon Half Marathon and 5K in December. All proceeds from this race benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The group also holds weekly group runs all throughout Brandon, from FITniche, JF Kicks, the Campo YMCA, the Brandon Parkway, and more. Memberships (not required to run with the group) are $10 a year and you can attend meetings on the fourth Monday of the month. Coaching services are also available to runners. Local Girl Scouts Clean Ponds & Install Recycle Bins For Award Product The wildlife that calls FishHawk’s ponds home is much safer this month, thanks to a group of Girl Scouts and their Silver Project. FishHawk residents and Girl Scout Cadettes Katy Bradbourne, Harper Kinninger and Ashley Johnson organized a clean up in late January to pick up trash in FishHawk ponds. During the clean up, aided by other groups, they collected 245 pounds of trash. “We knew we wanted to do something for the environment,” said Bradbourne, who has been a Girl Scout for nine years. “We like to fish and we saw a need to help clean up the ponds.” But the girls’ desire to help also has a longer lasting aspect. In addition to the clean up, they also installed monofilament recycle bins at two of the area’s more popular fishing ponds. The bins are for monofilament lines, not trash, so that the lines can be disposed of properly. “Monofilament line takes 600 years

to decompose, so proper cleanup is important,” the girls wrote in their project explanation. “It is important not to put trash in the bins, just fishing line.” According to the girls, the recycled line gets sent to Tampa Bay Watch for proper disposal. Tampa Bay Watch removes and recycles an estimated 50,000 feet of fishing line per year and group also has a database of all the monofilament recycle bins in the Tampa Bar Area. The project took the girls six months to complete and taught Bradbourne a lasting lesson. “We learned that it takes a long time to get things done when working with organizations,” she said.
