“I wanted a better life for my family, and I couldn’t do that on the road,” explained Townsend. “So here I was, this prissy beauty queen in heels, out in the mud and in the middle of nowhere.” Townsend praises God for bestowing her with the gift to make others laugh and for the opportunity to return to stand-up comedy. Today, she employs comedy as a way to connect with women and point them to Jesus. Townsend wants them to know that they are more precious than rubies. “Laughter is so healing,” said Townsend. “It’s important for women to come together and lean on one another. We are going to have a great time at this event.” The fun kicks off at 5 p.m. with a shopping EXPO where ladies can mingle and sample lite hors-d'oeuvres and Comedian Leslie Norris Townsend captivates her audi- decadent desserts. Local Girl Scouts Gather To Clean Local Community Trails By Kate Quesada

The trails of FishHawk Ranch are cleaner this month thanks to 16 local Girl Scout troops. On Saturday, February 20, troops from the Fossil Valley Service Unit of Girls Scouts held their annual Walk the Trails event and collected 1,085 pounds of trash. During the event, each individual troop walks around the area picking up trash and then brings their collec-

They invited local Cub Scout packs, Boy Scout Troops and other service organizations to come out and help clean the ponds of FishHawk. Blind Side Actor Quinton Aaron To Speak At Family Kids Camp’s Banquet

By Michael Smith

The Blind Side actor Quinton Aaron will be the keynote speaker for Royal Family Kids Camp Tampa Bay’s Royal Banquet: Giving Hope to Foster Kids on Thursday, April 5, at The Regent in Riverview. The banquet is the main fundraiser for Royal Family Kids Camp Tampa Bay. The nonprofit organization’s goal in 2018 is to provide a free week of camp in July for more than 60 kids who come from foster care, group homes and kinship care. The cost to run the overnight camp for a week is $50,000. During this life-changing week children ages 6 to 12 who have experienced abuse, neglect and abandonment are given a safe and loving environment with a ratio of one adult to one child. The camp is provided free of charge to the kids and staffed 100 percent by volunteers. Last year, 47 kids attended the camp staffed by 60 volunteers. The campers were treated like royalty

throughout the week, starting with a luxury coach bus ride to camp. The children were treated each night to a special event, including a carnival, birthday bash, bonfire and petting zoo, and talent show. “It’s a time where [the kids] are shown God’s unconditional love in a way that they’ve probably never experienced before,” Camp Director

Scott Mulhollen said. “We treat them like royalty. They’re the kings and the queens of the camp so we give them the best week of their lives.” Banquet keynote speaker Quinton Aaron is best known for playing Michael Oher, aka ‘Big Mike,’ in the award-winning movie The Blind Side. The film’s story gives hope and encouragement to kids who have experienced neglect and abandonment. Aaron speaks all over the country to at-risk kids, bringing awareness and solutions to the issues of

bullying. The Tampa-based Quinton Aaron Foundation’s mission is to provide hope, encouragement, confidence and resources to children on the brink of suicide or battling the damaging effects on self-esteem and confidence caused by the actions or words of others. Several banquet sponsorship levels are available, ranging from $250 to $3,000. Event sponsors include Thrivent Financial, the Tampa Bay Lightning, Tampa Bay Steel, Highland Packaging Solutions and United Hoist Equipment. Donations for the event’s silent auction are needed. Contact Cindy Leon at 787-1211. The cost to attend the banquet, which will begin at 6:30 p.m., is $30 per person and $210 for a table of eight. Register online or get more information at RFKCTB.com/events. If you are interested in serving as a camp volunteer or counselor, go online to RFKCTB.com/volunteer for more information.

Saint Catherine’s Monastery Nestled between the sharp mountain peaks of the Sinai Mountains in Egypt, St. Catherine's Monastery has been a sacred destination for centuries. One of the world's oldest working monasteries, it sits at the foot of Mount Sinai, the site of the Old Testament's account of Moses and the Ten Commandments. Founded in the Sixth Century AD, St. Catherine’s Monastery is considered the oldest and most famous working Christian monasteries in the world. The monastery was built by order of the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I, at the site where Moses saw the burning bush. It is believed that the oldest surviving roof truss in the world is located at St. Catherine’s Monastery. The monastery is also famous for housing the world’s oldest continuously operating library. It contains the world’s second largest collection of ancient scrolls and manuscripts, second only to the Vatican. The most impressive literary document, Codex Sinaiticus, is the oldest known complete Bible (circa 345 AD) and was discovered inside the premises of St. Catherine’s Monastery in 19th century. The most sacred part of St Catherine’s Monastery is the Chapel of the Burning Bush, a small chamber behind the altar of the basilica. When open to the public, those who enter must remove their shoes, just as Moses

did when he approached the burning bush as described in Exodus 3:25. Under the chapel’s altar is a silver star that is believed to mark the site of the burning bush from which God called Moses to lead His people out of Egypt. St Catherine’s Monastery also encompasses the Well of Moses, where Moses is said to have met his wife. As told in Exodus 2:15-21, Moses was at the well when the seven daughters of Jethro came to draw water. A group of shepherds tried to steal the water from the women and Moses came to their defense. In gratitude, Jethro invited Moses to his home and gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage. The monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration but was renamed for Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a 3rdcentury martyr. Catherine was sentenced to death on the wheel. When this failed to kill her, she was beheaded. According to legend, angels took her remains to Mount Sinai. Around the year 800, monks from the Sinai Monastery found her incorrupt body and brought her body back to the monastery. To the right of the altar in the basilica is a marble tomb with two silver caskets containing the St.’s skull and left hand. The monastery has in recent times become a major Holy Land destination visited by thousands of travelers each year. Many visitors to the monastery also make the hike or camel ride to the summit of Mount Sinai, the mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments. Visitors are required to cover their upper arms and knees. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops are banned for both males and females. By Amanda Boston

Members of Bell Shoals Worship Ministry join Big Daddy Weave at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

The Bell Shoals Worship Ministry joined Big Daddy Weave in a concert on Jan. 27 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. About 70 performers from Bell Shoals helped comprise the 240-person True North Symphony Orchestra and Mass Choir to help Big Daddy Weave perform 15 of its greatest songs. Choir members ranging in age from early 30s to early 80s took part in the rehearsals and concert preparation before taking the stage with one of the best-known names in contemporary Christian music. “On Friday, we rehearsed for eight solid hours,” said Jason Millsaps, the pastor of music and worship at Bell Shoals. “We started at 8:30 in the morning and finished up at 4:30 in the afternoon.

Millsaps continued, “Saturday, we came to Carnegie Hall at 11 in the morning and went through everything. Then we got dressed and came back at 6:30 (for the concert.) It was a great experience.” The Bell Shoals choir, which was there for four days and three nights, also got to take a post-concert dinner cruise on the Hudson River with Big Daddy Weave. “It was awesome,” said Millsaps. “To be a part of that in New York City was amazing. From the first note, we had church. To sing on a stage that has so much history, and for me to conduct on that stage was awesome. It was truly an honor. I believe we were even able to share the Gospel through music.”

Live Like You Mean It Listening to People’s Hearts By Derek Maul Sometimes it’s hard to believe people are ‘Made in the image of God.’ I mean, look at us! Look around at what’s happening in the world, how people act, and how miserably we treat one another. Humanity looks anything but God-like. Even though the evidence is disheartening, I’m still optimistic. I like people, I enjoy learning their stories, I sympathize with their struggles, and I understand how people can own different points of view so long as I remember to listen to their hearts. Listening to someone’s heart means learning who they are, what moves them, and what they care about. That’s where we begin to recognize the image of God. That’s where we begin to understand we are brothers and sisters, where I begin to listen, where I begin to know you, to value you, and in so doing catch a glimpse of the beating heart of God. Growing God’s Kingdom is not realized via the imposition of religious code or insisting on our definition of faith, but in the expanding and deepening of authentic community. If I believe I am right and you are wrong, how has that judgment

advanced God’s purpose? But if I listen to your heart until I hear the heartbeat of God echo in your soul, then we both begin to understand that because of God’s great love we are brothers and sisters. Think about eternal truth, about the fact that the Great I Am lives beyond the confines of time and space, think about the limitations of human thought, expression, and vocabulary. Let all that sink in. Now tell me that your limited knowledge, or your narrow interpretation, can exclude any of God’s children from Christ’s simple invitation? Being created in the image of God is our common inheritance. Loving one another is the only option we have. But we can’t do that if we are not, first, prepared to listen to one another’s hearts, and to open our own.

“God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them.”Genesis 1:27

Great Reads For Easter Inspiration

By Kelly Wise Valdes

Many Christians are honoring this Lenten season in preparation for Easter on Sunday, April 1. For some people, Easter consists of the Easter bunny and family get-togethers. For others, Easter is primarily a time of celebrating Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection. For many, Easter is similar to Christmas and is celebrated as a combination of the secular and the sacred. Understanding Easter from a Christian perspective is vitally important. The celebration of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection is crucial for believers. Although Easter is the most significant event in the Christian year, we rarely take time to explore what it means in detail. So much attention is given to Lent, yet the theology of resurrection is central not only to what we believe as Christians, but the basic understanding of Jesus’ sacrifice. Choose a book or Bible study to prepare your heart during the season of Lent and Easter.

This Risen Existence: The Spirit of Easter By: Paula Gooder

The book begins with an extended reflection on ancient and contemporary understandings of resurrection. It then takes readers on an exciting journey of discovery through the New Testament narratives in a quest to discover what resurrection tells us about life after death, the end times and what it actually means to be a Christian.

Easter from the Back Side By: J. Ellsworth Kallas

Jesus' death and resurrection proved to be the turning point in world history, with implications still being unraveled. Combine that with a creative approach, the book clarifies basic teachings about Easter and introduces new possibilities of meaning. Enriched with contemporary illustrations and personal experiences, this book provides new perspectives on Easter.

Come Alive: A 30-Day Devotional of Hope and Renewal Outreach, Inc.

This book will inspire readers of all ages and backgrounds to celebrate the journey of this special season through devotions based on Jesus' sacrifice, death and resurrection, and how it all applies to areas of our lives that need to come to life through His grace. There is also a section of readings and suggested activities for celebrating Easter as a family.

Preparing for Easter: Fifty Devotional Readings from C.S. Lewis By: C.S. Lewis

Lewis's essays, poems, letters and other works that will lead you on a reflective journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. Community Shares In Chick-fil-A Brandon South Anniversary Celebration

By Michelle Colesanti

Chick-fil-A Brandon South recently celebrated its first anniversary.

The morning dawned cool. The bright sun reflected off the cow on the roof, which beckoned everyone to come in and eat at the Chick-fil-A Brandon South in Bloomingdale. Members of the Brandon, Valrico/FishHawk and Riverview Chambers were invited to be a part of its one-year anniversary celebration in late January. The morning event was a great time to network, meet up with new and old friends and enjoy a Chick-fil-A breakfast. It was over 50 years ago that Truett Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A in suburban Atlanta. Today there are over 2,200 Chick-filA restaurants, mostly in the United States. Paul and Tammy Holmberg have been franchise owners locally for almost 20 years. They moved to Brandon in May of 1998 and opened their first Brandon location in June 1998. They are still owners of the Chick-fil-A Lake Brandon Village at 11325 Causeway Blvd. They also owned the restaurant at Westfield Brandon Town Center from December 2013 to November 2016.

The Holmbergs were excited when the opportunity to open the Bloomingdale location was presented to them, making it easier for customers in the Valrico and Fishhawk communities to dine with

them more frequently. Tammy said, “The year seems to have flown by and we are looking forward to continuing to serve this area.” The celebration continued on January 26 with a pep rally that was held by Bloomingdale High School students after school. “We had a fantastic time with the Bloomingdale High School drum line, color guard and cheer teams on Friday afternoon to celebrate our anniversary,” noted Tammy. Principal and current Brandon Honorary Mayor Sue Burkett was also there in support of the partnership between the school and Chick-fil-A. The following day was Family Fun Day where families with young kids could enjoy balloons, face painting and more. Download the Chick-fil-A Mobil app. and start earning rewards. Chick-fil-A is open Monday to Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. As is company policy, Chick-fil-A is always closed on Sunday. The restaurant is located at 2010 Bloomingdale Ave. in Valrico. Plant City Railroad Viewing Platform Is Highlighted In National Magazine Deborah – Prophetess, Judge, Leader By Kathy L. Collins

Plant City is a treasure trove for those who love history, art and culture. If you are a train enthusiast, there is no better place to go than to the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum located The viewing platform at at 102 N. Palmer the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum in St. in Plant City. Plant City is a must for any train enthusiast. The museum opened in 2013. A highpoint is the covered, two story trainwatching platform which is located in and around the station that once served passengers trains of two CSX Transportation predecessors. The museum and platform were recently featured in a special edition of Trains Magazine, America’s Top Train Watching Locations. Benito (Bennie) Lubrano, Jr., the Executive Director for the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum Society said, “Even though the viewing platform has received numerous regional awards and recognitions, the magazine is known to most railroad fans across the country.” Lubrano added, “It is great to be considered among all the other cities across the U.S. and how we rank among them.” The viewing platform is unique. It is located on two main lines North/South Sline (former Seaboard Air Line, SAL railroad track) and East/West A-line (former

Atlantic Coast Line, ACL track). That intersection is referred to as “the Diamond” and is actually a “double Diamond” because two North/South tracks intersect with one East/West track. Moreover, there is an upper level that allows for a different perspective to view trains. The viewing platform is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. According to Lubrano, “It was constructed to make it appear to be the same era as the station, circa 1909. The nearest other viewing platform would be Folkston, GA.” If you want to see trains, this is the perfect spot. On any given day, 16 to 18 trains pass through the area of the viewing platform. An Amtrak train passes twice a day. In addition, Tropicana Juice cars pass several times a day and a TECO coal train headed to the power plant in Apollo Beach passes by at least three times a week. The mission of the Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum Society is to promote and educate visitors about the railroad history and its impact on Eastern Hillsborough County and Plant City. They offer group tours for children of all ages. Admission is free. For info, visit www.willafordrailroadmuseum.com or call 719-6989.

Throughout the Bible, there are many stories of strong and heroic women. In this series, we explore a story of faithful biblical woman each month. With their strong faith, the women of the Bible continue to teach us how to live authentic, faith-filled lives. No matter what our circumstances are, we can find ourselves in their stories. The fascinating story of Deborah can be found in the Book of Judges in the Bible. She is the first female leader in Israel’s history and yet it’s not noted as extraordinary – the Bible states it factually. It was during this time that the Israelites had been under the control of the oppressive Canaanite King Jabin and the commander of his army, Sisera. The Canaanites had 900 chariots of iron and ruled over Israel for 20 years. Deborah was an Israelite woman, but the Bible tells very little of her background. What we do know is that she was a wise and God-fearing woman. So wise, in fact, that she was considered a judge and Israelites would come to her to have their disputes settled. Judges were considered prophets and received guidance through prayer and the laws of God to litigate and settle disputes among the people of Israel. One day, God instructed Deborah to

By Kelly Wise Valdes

call for Barak, Commander of the Israelite army, to summon 10,000 men to attack the King’s army and kill Sisera, the commander. Fearful to follow through with the command, Barak told Deborah, “If you go with me, I will go; but if you don’t go with me, I won’t go.” She replied, “Certainly I will go with you, but because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.” Deborah and Barak then gathered 10,000 troops and prepared for attack. A torrential rainstorm occurred at the onset of the battle, causing the ground to become swamped and the heavy iron chariots sank into the mud. Barak, Deborah and the troops were not troubled by the storm and realized that God had provided the rain for their victory. The Israelites left none of Sisera’s army alive. Deborah’s prophecy was fulfilled: Barak’s army won and the Israelites were freed from the oppressive rule of their enemies. Barak had faith in God, but not the unwavering faith that Deborah possessed. How much faith and commitment do we have in serving God as Deborah did?
