Riverview High Student Wins $50,000 As Lightning Community Hero
By Kate Quesada
Lightning player Ryan Callahan and Lightning owner Jeff Vinik present Riverview High School senior Karisya Moran-Adames with a $50,000 check as a Tampa Bay Lightning Community Hero.
Adames had the idea for her project after working with the Kiwanis Club and Feeding Tampa Bay at a Project Smile group at Gibsonton Elementary. Both Gibsonton and Mintz elementaries are Renaissance schools where more than 95 percent of the children qualify for free or reduced breakfast and lunch. Project Smile started as a Kiwanis service initiative six years ago when Mike Daigle and his wife, a retired school teacher, realized that the children who receive free and reduced meals at schools were going home for the weekend with no food that they could count on. “Hunger is a huge problem in our area,” said Daigle. “It is only by coming together that we can even start to put a dent in it.” The program at Gibsonton Elementary gives out pre-packaged food and bread to approximately 200 students, known as Smile Club members, a week thanks to help from Feeding Tampa Bay, the Kiwanis and grants. With the $25,000 from the Lightning, Adames plans to start the program at Mintz by helping 30 students this month, but hopes to grow

This month a group of local elementary students will have one less worry thanks to Riverview High School senior Karisya Moran-Adames. Adames is starting Project Smile, a weekend backpack program, at Mintz Elementary School in Brandon which will provide food for qualifying students to take home and eat when they can not receive free meals from school. She is able to do this thanks to funds won when she was named a Community Hero of Tomorrow through the Tampa Bay Lightning Community Heroes program. As a Community Hero of Tomorrow, Adames was honored at one of the team’s December hockey games and received $50,000, $25,000 of which she will use to start the program at Mintz Elementary. The remainder will go to a scholarship for her education.

Local Teacher Starts Little Free Library To Encourage Reading In Brandon
By Amy Schechter
Increased access to books in the home is thought to increase children’s reading proficiency, yet the U.S. Department of Education estimates that up to 61% of lowincome families do not have any books for their children at home. Children may not have access to their local library simply because of distance or parents not having time to take them during the day. It’s a need Chris Rexroad saw in her own backyard and worked to fix. Rexroad, a VPK teacher with Primrose South Tampa, knew how important building early reading skills is to a student’s later success: “I’m a big proponent of reading. This is one of the major things that I do with my kids. I don’t just want to teach them the skills they need to be readers, but I want to get them excited about reading.” However, when she drove home to Brandon, she noticed a need in speaking to the children who live on her street for whom she often buys books. This is where the idea for a Little Free
Library took root. With the help of her Bay Life Bible study group who worked together to build the container to house the books, a grant from Thrivent Financial, and book donations from Primrose of South Tampa, Rexroad is set to have the grand opening by the end of February or early March. Once open, the Little Free Library works as a “take a book, return a book” free book exchange that builds community and a love of reading. “I was a huge reader as a kid. I want kids to have access to books,” Rexroad reiterates, as she already sees the love of reading developing in the few children who live next door. She cannot wait to expand this service to her entire neighborhood. For more information or to donate, email rexroad8839@gmail.com and keep checking Facebook for grand opening information: www.facebook.com/BrandonLittle-Free-Library-165528494089586/. Visit littlefreelibrary.org for more information on the non-profit or to start your own. The Brandon Little Free Library will be located at 827 Louise St., Brandon, 33511.

Brandon Running Association Hosts 40th Annual Shamrock Classic Benefit Run
By Nicole Heubusch
Members of Ainsley’s Angels attending last year’s Shamrock Classic.
On Saturday, March 17, the Brandon Running Association will host their 40th Annual Shamrock Classic at O'Brien's Irish Pub on Kings and Lumsden. This family-friendly event is open to walkers and runners and will offer a 10k (6.2 miles), a 5k (3.1 miles), and a 1-mile fun run. There will be a post-race party including bagels, bananas, and beer. This race is a flat course, and St. Patty's Day costumes are encouraged. All proceeds from this event will benefit Ainsley's Angels of Florida. Ainsley's Angels is an organization that aims to build awareness about the special needs community by promoting awareness, providing education, and participating as active members in local communities. Last year, the group raised $3,500 for Ainsley’s Angels, and they hope to raise even more this year. “This is our second year working with Ainsley’s Angels,” said long time Brandon Running Association member, Steve Swift. “We love that this organization gives back to children in need, and we enjoy having some members of the group
join us at the race.” The Brandon Running Association is a not-for-profit organization that has over 150 members. “Our members are all different speeds. We have people that run a sub-eight minute mile and some that run a 16 minute mile. We have a pace for everyone,” said Swift. In addition to hosting the Shamrock Classic every March, the group also hosts the Brandon Half Marathon and 5K in December. All proceeds from this race benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The group also holds weekly group runs all throughout Brandon, from FITniche, JF Kicks, the Campo YMCA, the Brandon Parkway, and more. Memberships (not required to run with the group) are $10 a year and you can attend meetings on the fourth Monday of the month. Coaching services are also available to runners. For information on Ainsley's Angels, visit ainsleysangels.org. For information on the Brandon Running Association and to sign up for the Shamrock Classic, visit brandonrunning.com.

BSAC Presents Casino Royale 2018 Fundraiser At The Regent
By Kathy L. Collins
Come out and enjoy a lively evening of fun, table games, good food and drink at BSAC’s 10th Annual Casino Night. You get to have fun while also raising funds to help children of lower income families have the opportunity to take advantage of BSAC’s wonderful programming.
Brandon Sports and Aquatics Center (BSAC) is hosting its Annual Casino Night on Friday, March 23 from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Regent located at 6437 Watson Rd. in Riverview. This year’s event is expected to be bigger and better than ever. BSAC’s signature event, Casino Royale 2018, is an incredible opportunity to give back to the Brandon community while enjoying table games, a silent auction, open bar and 50/50 raffle. The cost to attend is $60. This gets you all you can eat and drink plus chips to play with at the wonderful table games. The games include craps, roulette, blackjack and more. You can even buy additional chips. This is a 21 and older event. BSAC will offer free childcare at The Regent for children ages three to 14. BSAC’s Casino Night raises funds that help support their scholarship pro-
gram which allows lower income families to have access to all of the quality services that BSAC offers. This includes after school care, athletic training and special needs education. Last year, over 400 area residents attended Casino Night and helped to raise money for BSAC’s programs. As this is the 10th year anniversary of this fabulous event, it is hoped that the event will raise over $60,000 for scholarship funds. BSAC is a nonprofit organization that impacts the lives of area residents on a daily basis. BSAC provides parents with a safe, enriching and educational experience for their children. Over 10,000 swimming lessons are provided at BSAC each year. This helps fulfill BSAC’s mission of youth drowning prevention. Carli Walko, BSAC Director of Marketing said, “We have a little something for everyone here at BSAC. We offer many options for sports for children to grow in and learn. We offer a safe environment for children to come after school.” Waldo added, “We are also a great place to host your next party, team building event, church party or picnic.” BSAC is located at 405 Beverly Rd. in Brandon. To get tickets for BSAC’s Casino Night or to become a sponsor, please visit www.mybsac.org.

Too Long At The Shelter – These Dogs Need A Forever Home

Riverview/Apollo Beach Edition
Call them 100-day dogs. Or centenarians. Or loveable and adoptable. No matter the label, the dogs that have been at Hillsborough County’s Pet Resource Center for more than 100 days need a helping hand - and a permanent home. On average, most dogs stay at the Pet Resource Center for only a couple weeks before being adopted. Sometimes, though, the weeks stretch into months. The shelter currently has roughly 15 dogs that have been at the shelter 100 days or more. The longest has been at the shelter 147 days. The Pet Resource Center provides housing, food, and top-quality medical care for all of its dogs and cats, but extended stays in a shelter are not good
for pets. Dogs can develop symptoms of kennel stress, including lack of appetite, excessive pacing or jumping, or chewing on their cage or Princess themselves. The best antidote for kennel stress is adoption. The Pet Resource Center is appealing to the community to provide loving homes for these Sirius dogs that, through no fault of their own, have become long-term residents at the shelter. All the dogs have been spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. To celebrate these long-term guests and help find them new homes, the adoption fee is just 100 cents. The PRC is the only open admission shelter in Hillsborough County, meaning it accepts all dogs and cats regardless of size, age, breed, or medical condition. The shelter is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Information about the dogs and cats available for adoption also can be found online at http://hcflgov.net/en/residents/animals-and-pets/petadoption/adopt-a-dog-or-cat.

Weird, Wacky And Wonderful Holidays – March 2018 Solo Vacation Day • Do Something Day • Let’s Laugh Day • Puppy Day Did you know that there are an abundance of daily holidays and special days every month? Some are immersed in tradition, while others may be silly, bizarre, unique, special or inspirational. Unofficial Holidays are not traditionally marked on calendars but are celebrated by various groups and individuals. Some are designed to promote a cause or to recognize historical events not recognized officially, while others are fun holidays, generally intended to just be humorous. So, in the midst of our busy lives, maybe consider taking time to enjoy some of the entertaining but lesserknown holidays throughout the year. Let’s get the ball rolling for March, the month most well known for St. Patty’s Day celebrations and March Madness. But, how will you honor National Frozen Food day on Tuesday, March 6? Observe a moment of silence thinking about all the yummy foods and snacks in your freezer. Maybe pay special homage to that carton of frozen ice cream. To make this day more special, load up the family and head to Campbell’s Dairyland located at 200 S Parsons Ave. in Brandon and treat

Now that's not the end of weird celebrations for March. Nope, not by a long shot. Check out a few other notable days: March 1 – Plan A Solo Vacation Day March 4 – March Forth and Do Something Day March 12 – Napping Day March 15 - Absolutely Incredible Kid Day March 19 – Let’s Laugh Day March 23 – Puppy Day March 24 – Chocolate Covered Raisin Day March 28 – Something On A Stick Day March 31 – Bunsen Burner Day
the kids to an ice cream Sunday to celebrate. Wednesday, March 14 is a national Pi Day. Why? Pi is a mathematical concept and a number that never ends so we round it off to 3.14. If you are a mathematician, this day honors you. It also
pays respect to Albert Einstein who was born on March 14, 1879. Most of us non-mathematicians will celebrate this day by eating pie. Don’t feel like baking a pie? Stop off at Moreno’s bakery at 737 W. Brandon Blvd. in Brandon and pick out a delicious pie of your choice. Also, Village Inn is known for giving free slices of pie to their customers on Wednesday, which just happens to be on Pi Day this year.
All the waffle lovers of the world can unite on Sunday, March 25 for International Waffle Day. If you don’t have time to make homemade waffles in the waffle-maker that your Aunt Theo got you for Christmas 10 years ago, just jump in your car and enjoy a waffle at The Recipe Box Family Diner located at 147 E. Bloomingdale Ave. in Brandon. And remember, waffles are not just a breakfast food. Throw in a piece of fried chicken and call it dinner. You won’t want to miss out on Take a Walk In The Park Day on Friday, March 30. This is a great occasion to exercise and relax to help clear your mind and enjoy one of the 170 beautiful Hillsborough County parks. To find a park near you, visit www.hillsboroughcounty.org/en/residents/recreation-and-culture/parks/find-apark. You may need to walk after eating ice cream, pie and waffles. These holidays might encourage you to appreciate something, try something new or do something silly. At least we hope they inspire you to laugh a little during the days, weeks and months ahead.

Hillsborough County Seeks Nominations for Annual Neighborhood Recognition Awards
Think you belong to one of the best neighborhood associations in the area? Did your homeowners group accomplish a project in 2017 that was a home run? Do you know an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a difference where they live? Shine a spotlight by submitting a nomination in Hillsborough County’s annual Neighborhood Recognition Awards program. Nominations are being accepted in 10 categories designed to recognize individuals, groups, and organizations that have enriched the quality of life in neighborhoods through outreach, improvement projects, volunteer work, safety programs, art, partnerships, and board leadership. There’s even a category set aside for outstanding contributions by a youth volunteer or youth group. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Friday, March 16. Neighborhood groups may nominate themselves, other groups, and/or individuals for their efforts to improve the quality of life in unincorporated Hillsborough County, or the cities of Tampa, Plant City,
and Temple Terrace. Each nomination should include supporting information, such as samples of promotional material, website links, photographs, news clippings, and letters of support. The winners will be announced at the 15th Annual Hillsborough County Neighborhoods Conference on May 12 at the Sheraton Tampa East Hotel, 10221 Princess Palm Ave. in Tampa. Winners must be present to accept the awards. For details about each award category, eligibility requirements, nomination forms, and instructions for completing and returning the applications, go to HCFLGov.net/Neighborhoods and click on the “Neighborhood Recognition Awards” button, or call 272-5860.

Experience The Soulful, Hip Singing Of Choo Choo Sould With Genevieve
Experience Disney Junior’s Choo Choo Soul with Genevieve Goings, the soulful, hip, singing train conductor and Constantine ‘DC’ Abramson, the beatboxing, breakdancing engineer on stage engaging children in sing-alongs, dance routines and lots of crowd participation as they perform all the hits you know and love- when it comes to the RP Funding Center on Saturday, March 31 at 4 p.m. Genevieve Goings and Constantine ‘DC’ Abramson, the stars of Disney Junior’s “Choo Choo Soul,” are entering their 11th year of entertaining preschoolers and parents worldwide. Born from the mind of a Silicon Valley video game developer, Choo Choo Soul began as a hip-hop/soul children’s album of music that “won’t drive parents crazy.” The album caught fire and the brand was acquired by Disney and developed into a live-action television interstitial paired with animation in 2006 that encouraged young viewers to get up and dance to the funky, urban sound. Choo Choo Soul began touring the country in 2007 and has performed for thousands of children in over 100 cities across the globe. With the wildfire success of the go-to duo for tots, Disney commissioned
a release of the second studio album; a re-make mashup of Classic Disney hits. Genevieve Goings is now the voice of Disney Junior the Channel and the host of the ‘Radio Disney Junior.’ Writing music for acclaimed brands such as Leapfrog and Fisher-Price, releasing a children’s clothing line with Walmart.com, and touring schools with her ‘Do You Know?’ Brand, Goings has solidified her path in the Children’s Market. Along with Choo Choo Soul, Constantine “DC” Abramson is an Entertainment Professional working with the NFL, NBA, and MLB through mascotting, choreographing, and fan engagement. Tickets are on sale for $51, $29. Service charges may apply and are available by visiting the RP Funding Center Box Office or toll free 888-3970100, and online at www.rpfundingcenter.com.

Have A Voice In The Choice Of Tampa Bay’s Next Drinking Water Sources As the Tampa Bay area continues to grow, the region will need more water. Your voice is needed to help decide the next drinking water sources. If you live in Hillsborough, Pasco or Pinellas counties, you are invited to share your opinions on water supply projects at FutureWater.org. Tampa Bay Water, the regional drinking water supplier to the Tampa Bay area, is working on a long-term plan to meet drinking water demands well into the future. Part of the agency’s planning process is collecting community input. “Public input is essential to our planning process,” said Michelle Stom, chief communications officer for Tampa Bay Water.“ By working cooperatively with our member governments, community organizations, businesses and residents, we are able to improve our service to the Tampa Bay community.” There is a short-list of projects to consider, each with its own technical, financial and environmental components. The new sources under consideration include additional seawater and river water, two sources currently serving the region, as well as options that use highly treated reclaimed water as a new source. FutureWater.org offers detailed information on each project, features a video overview, provides the ability to sign-up for a telephone town hall to discuss the projects live, and offers a survey to collect

input. Based on projections, the Tampa Bay area will need to have additional drinking water ready in 2028. Input is needed now to ensure there is enough time for the design, permitting and construction process. Tampa Bay Water’s board of directors is expected to review the projects and community feedback before its December 2018 meeting when the board will be selecting a project or projects to move forward for more study, design and permitting. Planning ahead is always smart, especially when it comes to something as important as drinking water. Now is the time to be part of the conversation — so we have the right supply ready at the right time to keep our region growing and thriving. Visit FutureWater.org to learn more and be heard. Locally, the 15.5-billion gallon C.W. Bill Young Regional Reservoir makes the region’s water supply more drought resistant, reliable and flexible. Surface water from the Tampa Bypass Canal, Hillsborough and Alafia rivers is stored in the reservoir during wet times. During dry times, when river is unavailable, water stored in the reservoir is withdrawn, treated and blended with other supplies to serve the region. To learn more, visit tampabaywater.org.
One of the primary reasons to consider an assisted living community for a loved one is all of the wonderful opportunities for social interaction with other residents and staff. Studies have shown that staying socially active provides numerous benefits to seniors and can be as important as staying physically active. Seniors who have an active social life tend to be healthier than those seniors that live isolated lives, with a reduced risk for chronic conditions like osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Socially active seniors also have less risk for depression and have sharper minds. Programming in assisted living communities should include a wide range of ways to keep residents engaged with others in the community. Some examples of these types of programs include: Music Programs such as Chorus groups, sing-alongs, Name That Tune Games, and karaoke can provide an outlet for expression of feelings, opportunity to reminisce with peers, and can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves with words. And most importantly singing is FUN!
Fitness Programs improve residents’ physical health and well being, which is so critical as we age. Examples include balance classes, walking groups, chair dancing, yoga, and bean bag toss. Learning Opportunities such as participation in a book club, jewelry making classes, painting lessons and flower arranging will not only provide opportunities for learning a new skill, but will also help residents stay intellectually stimulated. Communal Dining offers residents a group setting in which to enjoy their meals. Enjoying each other’s company during these times will often ensure more improved eating habits as well as three nutritious meals a day. Assisted living communities, in addition to providing assistance and supervision for day to day care, offer many opportunities for social engagement resulting in improved quality of life for our residents.

Riverview Chamber Connects Businesses And Community
By Kate Quesada
A lot has changed in the Riverview area since 1966, but one thing has remained constant; the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce’s (GRCC) dedication to its members and community. The GRCC which operates on the core values of leadership, fun, teamwork, diversity and integrity to promote the economic, civic, commercial, industrial and educational interests of the greater Riverview area, now boasts 669 members from small, family-owned business to large corporations. “We serve to create a family environment that ensures the success of our community, our business and our members,” said Executive Director Tanya Doran. The area’s growth has not stopped the chamber from embracing its members and community. “As Riverview develops, our membership continues to grow,” said Doran. “Since Riverview is unincorporated Hillsborough County, it is important for us to have a strong voice and work together to maintain the natural characteristic of our town. Building a sense of belonging and creative an environment for success is our mission.” Although new businesses are regularly opening their doors in the area and the chamber embraces them with ribbon cuttings and grand opening celebrations, the group also celebrates its long-standing members. “We are proud to say we have
The Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce opened its doors in 1966 and now has 669 members.
several long time members including local attorney William P. Schwarz, Esq. who joined in 1992,” said Doran, who added that Ken Hope Air Conditioning & Heating, K2 Engineering, Resurrection Catholic Church and Summerfield Crossing Golf Club joined in 1994. Members represent small businesses, corporations with several hundred employees, charitable organizations and are even elected officials and those running for office. “Regardless of the size of the business, folks want to know what is going on in their community; to stay informed and connected,” said Doran. “The GRCC is a reliable source and connects folks in our area.”
Members also receive other less obvious services through their connection with the Chamber, including an on-line presence for businesses that would not usually prioritize that. Michelle Mosher, agent and owner of SouthShore Insurance Professionals said, “The chamber is an active voice for those who don’t necessarily have one.” She also noted that the chamber helps the community by spearheading the welcoming of new businesses and leaders. From weekly networking groups and monthly luncheons, to the annual Honorary Mayor’s Race and Golf Tournaments that raise funds for local non-profits, the GRCC offers a wide variety of member and community
supported annual events. “I enjoy being part of the Chamber because they really care about the success of their members with the training and community events that support our businesses,” said Pearl Chiarenza of Bodyworks Heath and Wellness. “Each of the events allows for our businesses to support the community as well as the Chamber.” One of the most popular events organized by the GRCC is Trick or Treat Street. For this event, the Chamber works with Riverview High School, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation Department to offer a safe environment for local children to enjoy the tradition of trick or treating. Last year, approximately 3,000 children attended the free event where they were given candy and small toys, ate food and won prizes. “The GRCC is successful because of the dedicated and passionate people of this community,” said Doran. “We provide education and resources to help our members become successful and offer exposure to the local community. We care.” The Chamber is located at 10021 Water Works Lane, off Gibsonton Dr. east of I-75 in Riverview, and can be reached at 234-5944. By Amanda Boston
Calling all ladies! Tampa’s FaithTalk radio station presents Ladies Night Out on Thursday, March 22 at Bell Shoals Baptist Church. Grab your girlfriends and get ready for an evening of laughs when Christian Comedian Leslie Norris Townsend takes the stage at 7 p.m. Townsend, also a former beauty queen and grand finalist on Star Search, received her first major break into showbiz performing at Walt Disney World. Shortly after, Hollywood noticed her knack for improvisation and knocked on her door. With 30 plus television appearances, including The Tonight Show and Comedy Central, Townsend easily connects with her audiences through song, dance and comedy. The accomplished performer has also shared the stage with the likes of Robin Williams, Bryan Cranston and Henry Winkler, just to name a few. Touted as part comedy and part testimony, Townsend’s act pulls from her life experience as she recounts her journey from a comedian with a bur-
geoning career in Hollywood to a farmer and stay-at-home mom in rural Ohio. “I wanted a better life for my family, and I couldn’t do that on the road,” explained Townsend. The Ice Age Returns At FossilFest Inna’s Alterations Offers Exceptional Staff Report
In Florida’s last Ice Age, prehistoric people hunted mammoths, built pyramids along Florida’s coast, and lived in fear of the saber cat, giant lion, and wolf. On Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11, the Florida State Fairgrounds will go back in time to a different place, a different Florida, a land long lost. The Tampa Bay Fossil Club presents the 31th annual, FossilFest 2018 – The Ice Age Returns! FossilFest is Florida’s largest prehistoric show where the public can view amazing fossils that were found right here in Florida, as well as, artifacts left behind by Florida’s first people. FossilFest features educational activities for both children and adults designed to teach the public about Florida’s exciting prehistoric past. Vendors will be on hand to sell and trade fossils. “Our goal is to teach Floridians about the prehistoric creatures and people that were here long before us,” said club president Mike Searle. “You don’t have travel to far-away exotic places to find these fossils. Mammoths, wolves, camels, and rhinos lived right here where we live today. Their fossilized remains are everywhere in Florida”, said Searle. On both days, there will be free workshops to teach folks how they can legally hunt for fossils in Florida
and how to identify and preserve what they find. A highlight of FossilFest is the children's Fossil Mine at Paleo Park. For a small fee, kids can dig through a sand pit to recover actual prehistoric fossils donated by members of the Tampa Bay Fossil Club. Then, at the ‘Learning Table,’ they sit down with a club member who will identify and explain their new treasures. The children keep all the fossils they find. “It’s a wonderful ‘hands-on’ learning experience,” said Club member and Hillsborough County schoolteacher, Patrick McGirk. “You just can’t believe how excited these kids get over finding fossils. They don’t even realize how much they’re learning.” There will be free door prizes, kid’s games, silent auctions, and raffles throughout the weekend. The Tampa Bay Fossil Club is a family oriented organization focusing on paleontology, archaeology, and everything prehistoric. The 31-year-old club hosts numerous field trips, camp outs, gatherings, and adventures throughout its September through May season. FossilFest will take place at the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. 301 in Tampa from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. -4 p.m. on Sunday. Cost is $8 for adults; children 12 and under are free. Visit www.tampabayfossilclub.com.
