LAKE BRANDON CHICK-FIL-A CELEBRATES 25 YEARS
As the Lake Brandon Village Chick-fil-A celebrates 25 years of serving the community, it also thanks its customers for being loyal for so many years!
When owners Paul and Tammy opened the location on June 18, 1998, it was the first free-standing Chickfil-A in Brandon and only the second free-standing Chickfil-A in the Greater Tampa Bay Area. During construction, staf was hired out of a trailer onsite. The Brandon mall was just about to open, the Lowe’s Home Improvement Center hadn’t broken ground yet and there were fields for miles around!
“We didn’t know a soul,” Tammy said.
“We opened a little Chick-fil-A and we didn’t know if it would be successful or not because it was on Lumsden and there were still cows grazing next door, when we opened.”
Fast forward 25 years and there isn’t an empty space for miles and the Lake Brandon Village Chick-fil-A now has more than 80 employees. Throughout the years, the store has been renovated twice, most recently to add the double drive-thru lanes and the covered drive-thru area with podium ordering. In 2017, Paul and Tammy also opened the Bloomingdale Chick-fil-A
store near Bloomingdale High School and instantly found success with both locations.
“Both Paul and I are proud of what we have accomplished over the last 25-year journey in the Brandon community,” said Tammy, “and have seen many great changes in the area.”
Paul has now been a veteran franchise owner and operator for over 31 years with Chick-fil-A and moved to the Brandon area from Racine, Wis-

consin with his wife and four school-aged children to open the Brandon location. When they moved to the community, the family immediately became involved in local schools, local sports and local community events. The Chick-fil-A cow could be seen walking in community events, 5K races, school and church carnivals and anywhere the community gathered. This community involvement has resulted in numerous community awards.
Longtime customer Leslie Haxton loves the two locations and says, “Chick-fil-A is like Cheers, where everyone knows your name.” She orders a large coke every day, “because Chickfil-A has the best ice, cups and syrup mixture,” and she pairs it with the famous Chicken Minis.
The first Chick-fil-A store opened in 1967 in Atlanta, Georgia and the company now operates 2,909 restaurants across 48 states, as well as in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
Chick-fil-A Lake Brandon Village is located 11325 Causeway Blvd, Brandon, FL 33511 and Chick-fil-A East Brandon/Valrico is located at 2010 Bloomingdale Ave, Valrico, FL 33596.

“SUNNY’S PJS” DRIVE COLLECTING PAJAMAS FOR FOSTER CARE CHILDREN
For FishHawk resident Robyn Walters, afectionately nicknamed “Sunny” by her ten grandchildren, the routine surrounding bedtime has always been a sacred one, and incomplete without a pair of cozy pajamas ready in hand. Having raised five children of her own and previously fostered 32 kids, Walters has always made it a priority to ensure brand-new nightwear remains available in her home.
Although no longer actively fostering children, Walters held steadfast to this passion while volunteering with the West Florida Foster Care Services (WFFCS) on a previous project. Upon speaking with a friend and fellow volunteer, Barbara Howard, Walters expressed her desire to start a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing children in the foster care system with opportunities to receive new pajamas, one she planned to christen as “Sunny’s PJs”. “Pajamas are something we all take for granted,” said Walters. “They deserve at least one pair of new pajamas when they come in.”
However, after her stage IV Pancreatic Cancer
diagnosis, Walters’ family and friends took it as an opportunity to get the community involved with her mission. Upon inviting the Director of Family Advocacy of the West Florida Foster Care Services, Janet Rinaldi, to attend a Riverview Woman’s Club meeting in April as the guest speaker, Howard began to realize the connection between Walters’ aspirations and the work of the WFFCS.
After confirming a partnership between Walters’ and WFFCS, “Sunny’s PJs” drive was born.
“Her family and friends decided to host this donation drive in her honor as a way to help her still fulfill that dream and give her some encouragement while she’s going through her cancer treatment,” said Rinaldi.
Donations of brand-new pajamas are currently

being collected by the WFFCS through its “empty closets”, or collection sites, whose hours are made available on the WFFCS website.
These locations include Temple Terrace United Methodist Church located at 5030 E Busch Blvd. in Temple Terrace; Riverview United Methodist Church located at 8002 U.S. Hwy 301 S in Riverview; and Theater Arts and Dance Alliance (TADA) at 16711 FishHawk Blvd. in Lithia. For those interested in making a monetary donation, there is a direct link available on the WFFCS website.
Hoping that this drive will one day indeed become a nonprofit, Walters is appreciative of all the support she has received from friends, family, and the community.
“I cannot begin to say ‘thank you’ enough for taking the smallest, little sliver of a dream that I had before I knew I had any kind of illness that I might not someday be able to do it, and making that wish come true,” said Walters. “There’s no amount of gratitude I can begin to show them.”
For more information on this drive or to make a donation, please visit wfcs.org or the WFFCS Facebook page.

EVERYDAY BLESSINGS PROVIDES A LOVING HOME FOR FOSTER YOUTH
Everyday
Blessings, established in 1997 and located in Lithia, provides an alternative to traditional foster homes in that they provide a home for large sibling groups or for children who have exceptional needs.
Its location can provide a home for up to 30 children ranging in age from birth to 17 years old. The children live in one of three homes with two house parents. The children have their own beds and may be in rooms with their biological siblings or others who are close in age.
Jillian Traurig, development director for Everyday Blessings, said, “The full-service model that we use with caregivers gives kids the opportunity to feel comfortable with their caregivers. They can develop positive relationships with adults while at the same time learn how to communicate efectively with their peers.”
Sibling groups often get placed with Everyday Blessings, which is licensed by the state of Florida as a child-caring agency, when a traditional foster care home cannot accommodate a large sibling group.
Traurig explained, “Our residential team works with many diferent foster care providers to help get youth in need to us because of the services we can provide for them.”
Everyday Blessings partners with local churches and service groups like the Plant

City Elks, who provide dinner for the children every Friday. It also partners with local businesses such as Central Maintenance and Welding Inc. and TECO.
Children can stay with Everyday Blessings until they find a permanent home. According to Traurig, “The length of time may be nine months or it may be two or more years. On average, youth in foster care spend at least two birthdays away from their families or birth parents.”
The goal of Everyday Blessings is, according to Traurig, “For them to return or go to a new, positive permanent placement where they can transfer the skills and knowledge learned at Everyday Blessings to become confident and successful adults.”
Traurig added, “There is no limit to the services that we will provide. We are passionate about understanding the needs of each and every youth and working with agencies of all kinds to help them grow and thrive.”
If you would like to help, Everyday Blessings is in need of supplies such as packaged snacks, juice boxes, goggles, swim shoes and pool towels so that their children can attend summer camp.

New Horizons Group Home, located at 109 Clay Ave. in Brandon, provides a family-oriented Christian group home. Its mission is to provide a supporting environment for adults with disabilities to achieve their highest potential for independence through a variety of services, emphasizing faith, family, choice, independence, dignity and respect.
New Horizons Group Home began as a dream in 1991. Alice Storms was the first long-term director of the Special Ministries Department at First Baptist Church Brandon. Storms and others were concerned about the mentally challenged adult population. The group formed a 501(c)(3). The first home, the Mary Lou Creamer House, opened in June 1999 and became home to six ladies.
Then, in May 2000, they started a second home; the Alice Storms Home opened in January 2002 and became home for six men. In April 2016, the third home, the Peter and Brenda Watkins Home, opened.
New Horizons Group Home serves mentally challenged adults who are able to take care of their own personal needs, work in the community or attend day programs. They live in homes with their housemates in a family atmosphere.
Brenda Watkins, secretary of the board of directors and one of the founders of

the organization, said, “Residents can stay as long as we are able to care for their physical needs. We are not licensed to give nursing care. This is meant to be their home for as long as possible.” The residents work, volunteer or attend day programs. They also attend special events for holidays and other events, such as birthday parties, as well as dances for special needs people.
Watkins said, “Our residents enjoy living with their friends. They feel independent because they are living on their own away from their parents, but they are supervised 24/7. They are able to visit with their families whenever they want. I have seen over the years that they all have blossomed, including our daughter, who has been there for 24 years. She enjoys coming to our home to visit but is always more than ready to get back to her home. What more can a parent ask for?”
Residents must be at least 21 years old. New Horizons Group Home currently has 16 residents. It has three openings, but there is a waiting list.
New Horizons Group Home receives MedWaiver for residents. They pay a nominal rent.
Donations are accepted to help with overall expenses.

Grace Notes Sky Dance
By Debora Coty
I was riding my bike one blazing summer afternoon, trying to rustle up a little breeze. I was in a rotten mood but kept pedaling. My tapioca thighs needed jiggling.
Now, I’m not a real athlete — I’m a choco-athlete, which means I exercise just so I can eat more chocolate. But this misery was sooo not worth it. Not even for Godiva.
I happened to glance upwards, and whadaya know? A UFO (unidentified flying object) high in the sky caught my eye. Something up there was flashing in the sun — black dots undulating against the white backdrop of clouds.
I stopped my bike in the middle of the road to figure it out.
The black dots turned out to be a flock of faraway birds dipping and turning and gliding on invisible air currents — like synchronized swimmers in a pool of frothy clouds. Their wings shimmered in the sunlight as precisely choreographed moves set their wings aglow with light.
The dozens of participants in this beautiful sky dance were in perfect unison, as if they’d

practiced together for months. Maybe they had. Don’t have a clue what birds do for fun. All I know is that I had the distinct impression that Papa God was their artistic director and I had been chosen — maybe even destined — to be their singular audience for this exquisite command performance. I felt totally blessed.
It truly was beautiful. Nature at its incredible best. I was so mesmerized, I didn’t realize a car had crept up behind me until a horn honked.
But by then I was in a much better mood. Yep, I was downright giddy. Unexpected sky dances can do that to you. Maybe I need to look up more often.

Chris Noble, community engagement manager of Seniors in Service in Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties recently named Kim Kordalski as the recipient of Volunteer of the Year for her outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Noble presented the award to Kordalski at a recent dinner honoring volunteers throughout the community.
In announcing this award, Nobel said that Kordalski dedicates her time every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday to organizing and distributing food to those in need.
“Kim has been working here since 2020, shortly after she moved to Florida from Arizona,” added Tom Bullaro, who serves as director of Our Lady’s Pantry. “She works whenever we need her, even well beyond her usual schedule. Her contributions have made a significant diference in the lives of many.”
In addition to her work at the pantry site in Wimauma, Kordalski serves as ambassador to Seniors in Service on behalf of Our Lady’s Pantry, attending various events, recruiting volunteers and helping to spread awareness about the work of the food pantry.
She is also working with Noble in other community projects. Among the community projects she has enjoyed was helping with a fundraising bingo at Sun Towers retirement community to benefit Moftt
Cancer Center, soon to move nearby.
According to Bullaro, Kordalski is also a member of Operations Veterans Connect (OVC), a program under the umbrella of Seniors in Service, where she provides invaluable support to veterans in need.
The mission of OVC is to connect veterans, active militaries and their families to community resources. In particular, she works with OVC members Michelle King and Scott Harvey each Saturday providing food and beverages to homeless veterans in New Beginnings, in Tampa.
“We are incredibly grateful to have Kim as part of our team,” said Bullaro. “Her dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to serving the community are remarkable.”
“On behalf of Seniors in Service, we extend our thanks to Kim for all her hard work and being an inspiration to us all,” said Noble.
“Congratulations,” he added. “You deserve this honor.”

BELL SHOALS ACADEMY TEACHER WINS CBC SHINING LIGHT AWARD
Fourth grade teacher Tara Simmons from Bell Shoals Academy was awarded this year’s Shining Light Award, sponsored by Christian Business Connections.
“She actually does a really good job with connecting with the kids, which is really how the most efective way to teach kids is how to show them that you care for them and that you love them,” said Head of School Daniel Padron.
The Shining Light awards were started in 2017 to recognize outstanding private school teachers that exemplify Titus 2:78.
“The goal is basically to bless teachers,” said Christian Business Connection’s president, Ryan Hughes.
Christian Business Connections reached out to 12 private schools and asked them to nominate teachers who were deserving of the award. Each nominee was judged based on stories from students and parents, their success as a teacher and their involvement in the community outside of their work.
“Basically, it’s her body of work — including how she cares for them and how she invests in them and how she teaches the subject area and really is dedicated to what she does — is what makes her special,” Padron said about the math teacher.

Each finalist was given a gift basket of items and gift cards donated by local businesses. This year, there were four finalists for the Shining Light Award: Foundation Christian Academy’s Tracy Olding and Bell Shoals Academy’s D.J. Evers, Tasha Miller and Simmons.
“Obviously, to say thanks to teachers that are willing to be Christian teachers in general I think is meaningful,” said Hughes. “They really do serve a big need.”
Padron is looking forward to spreading the news of Simmons’ recognition to shine light on her and highlight the work she does for her students and the community.
Simmons is the second Bell Shoals Academy teacher to win the award, joining 2017 winner Lisa Aune.
“There’s so much pride in having one of our teachers win that award,” said Padron.
Last year’s Shining Light Award was given to Foundation Christian Academy’s Terry and Margaret Reeves. Each year, the committee reaches out to around a dozen schools to request nominations for their outstanding teachers.

Sefner Christian Academy hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dedication of their new athletic field house on May 10, marking the completion of the second phase in the 25-year Ignite campaign.
“Just overall, it was really a great day in our school’s history of being able to open this athletic field house, … and it’s just the beginning,” said director of institutional advancement and CFO Mark Canterbury.
Canterbury said the opening of the field house was very significant for the school, as it is the academy’s first outdoor athletic field house.
The multipurpose sports facility will include a concession stand, restrooms, locker rooms and meeting rooms for the Crusaders’ outdoor sports. Sefner Christian athletes will also have a new training room and coaches’ ofces within the 8,500-square-foot-building.
“We also wanted to take care of [the student athletes] from an athletic standpoint. So, we built a trainer room inside of it. The biggest reason [was] to take care of those kids because there was no place for them to go, and now we have it,” said Rodney Knox, head of school.
Construction began in August 2022
after the school received funding from private donations, parents and outside supporters. The field house is located next to an artificial turf field that will provide space for athletes to focus on speed and agility training.
“We prayed that — we thank the Lord for his provision over it and a dedication back to the students for their use. We just prayed that this would be a facility that God would honor and the word of God will be shared and students will enhance their walk with Christ,” said Canterbury.
The Ignite campaign is a five-phase, seven-project refurbishment and expansion plan at Sefner Christian to prepare the academy for its future students and families. The campaign will continue to focus on improving Sefner Christian Academy, including future construction of a new fine arts building, stadium, administrative ofces and other buildings across campus. For more information on Sefner Christian Academy’s Ignite plan, visit its website at scacrusaders.com/about/ ignite.cfm.
FINANCIAL FOCUS
BIGGEST THREATS TO A COMFORTABLE RETIREMENT?
If you save and invest for decades, you’d like to know you can retire without fnancial worries. Nonetheless, you still have to be aware of some threats to a comfortable retirement — and how to respond to them. These threats include:
• Infation – Infation has been high recently, but even a mild infation rate can seriously erode your purchasing power. In fact, with just a 3% infation rate, your expenses could double in about 25 years — and your retirement could easily last that long. So, if you’re going to rely on your investment portfolio for a sizable part of your retirement income, you will need to own a reasonable number of growth-oriented investments, such as stocks or stock-based funds, whose potential returns can equal or exceed the infation rate.
• Excessive withdrawals – Once you retire, you should establish a withdrawal rate for your portfolio — an amount you can take out each year and still feel secure that you won’t run out of money. Some people make the mistake of withdrawing too much, too soon, once they’re retired. Your withdrawal rate should be based on several factors, including your age at retirement, the size of your portfolio and the amount of income you receive from other sources, such as Social Security. A fnancial professional can help you determine a withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for your needs.
• Market volatility – The fnancial markets will always fuctuate. When you’re still working, this volatility may not be such a problem, as you have years or decades to recover from short-term downturns. But when you retire, you don’t want to have to sell investments when their price is down. To help prevent this, you can tap into the cash in your portfolio, assuming you have enough to cover several months’ worth of
living expenses. You could also draw on a CD “ladder” — a group of CDs that mature at diferent times — to provide you with resources for the next few years and allow your equity investments time to recover their value.
• Unexpected costs – You had them when you were working, and you’ll probably have them when you’re retired: the furnace that breaks down, the car that needs a major repair, and so on. But if you’ve established an emergency fund containing a year’s worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account, you may be able to “ride out” these costs without jeopardizing your investment portfolio. Be sure to keep these reserves separate from your typical dayto-day accounts to avoid the temptation of spending your emergency money.
• Health – Retirees may face more health concerns than younger people, and those concerns often come with larger medical bills. That’s why it’s important to maximize the benefts from Medicare or your Medicare Advantage plan. Also, if you contributed to a Health Savings Account (HSA) while you were working, and you haven’t depleted it, you can use the money in retirement. As long as the HSA funds are used for qualifed medical expenses, withdrawals are tax- and penalty-free, and won’t be included in your income. This could help keep your income below certain levels, lower your Medicare premiums or avoid the 3.8% surtax on net investment income that can be assessed on high-net-worth taxpayers.
Retirement can be a pleasant time in your life — and you’ll enjoy it more if you’re prepared for the challenges that face all retirees.

Anyone in business understands the reason you create a business is to make a proft. A business that does not turn a proft will not be in business for long. So, nothing is wrong with trying to make more money. The challenge comes when people allow money to become their god.

evil. To be clear, money is not evil, but money has the ability to corrupt those who fall in love with it. So, how do we combat greed? We must fnd a bigger purpose that will motivate us.
God has no problem with us having stuf. The problem is when stuf has us or controls us. Remember this: What we cannot release holds us hostage.

Father God, I thank You for all that I have. Lord, I know that everything I have belongs to You, so, Lord, help me not to be greedy, but to be generous, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

CAMPO FAMILY YMCA OFFERS SWIM LESSONS TO STUDENTS FROM THE HEAD START PROGRAM
The Campo Family YMCA has partnered with 15 students from Pinecrest Elementary School’s Head Start program to ofer two weeks of swim lessons to the preschool-aged swimmers.
Through funding by Hillsborough County, Pinecrest Elementary was able to transport the students to the Campo Y each morning from Monday through Thursday at the beginning of May.
“They might not be able to come to swim lessons another way. So, I want to make the most of it because it’s not just that [the lessons] are free, but it’s that the school district is getting them here because transportation is a big barrier,” said swim instructor Paige Sahab. “The fact that the district gets them here is a big benefit of the program.”
The students were broken into three groups of five students based on their swimming experience and skill level. Sahab took each group into the pool for a half hour to work with the students individually.
“We talk about water safety: always asking permission before you go in the water, never swimming without a grown-up, and things like that,” explained Sahab.
The younger kids work on basics, like floating and kicking in the water, and

older, more experienced kids are working on swimming short distances.
“I just feel like every kid that we can get swimming is another potential tragedy avoided. So, I see it as we’re saving lives here,” said Sahab.
This is Sahab’s first year working as an instructor at the Y, but she has been working with local recreation centers and pools for 15 years.
“I love that we’re doing this with the Head Start kids,” said Sahab. “I think that it’s wonderful, and I just felt like people needed to know that we are doing this.”
The funding from Hillsborough County allowed 10 Tampa YMCAs to host lessons across the spring and fall semesters. In the fall, the Campo Y hopes to host three or four more Head Start programs from local schools.
The Head Start program is a free public-school program that ofers specialized education to kids from ages 3 to 5 years old in low-income families. Teachers work with a small number of kids to maximize their development before beginning grade school.
For more information on the Y and its swimming programs, visit tampaymca.org.

Hooked On Books: T rough Our Fathers’ Eye
By Kelly Wise Valdes
Fathers play a huge role in our lives — second only to our Heavenly Father. As Father’s Day approaches, we may find ourselves with mixed emotions. Some people have fathers who are available and interested in their lives; others have somewhat distant, disinterested fathers, while others may have grown up without a father. Many of us may have lost our fathers. To share my personal journey, my father currently has Alzheimer’s and sometimes doesn’t know who I am. Regardless of your current or past journey with your father, we always know we can depend on our Heavenly Father, Who loves us unconditionally. God can fill the gaps that we may be experiencing. The one thing we all have in common, no matter what kind of dad we have or have had, is that we have a Father in heaven. Regardless of how your father on Earth has treated you, you have a Father in heaven who has always been there and always will be there for you. Malachi 4:6 tells us: “He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers.” Have a blessed Father’s Day!

Missy’s Ink is now ‘Missy’s Ink & Laser’ after adding laser hair removal and electrolysis to its lineup of services for women in the Valrico area, allowing customers to add hair where they want and remove hair where they do not.
“I am thrilled to be able to ofer laser hair removal and electrolysis to my clients,” said owner Missy Duncan. “These services are in high demand, and I am excited to be able to provide them in a safe and comfortable environment.”
Duncan completed her International Board of Electrologist Certification Exam on April 12. In addition to her new certifications, Duncan purchased a Soprano ICE laser hair removal machine. The machine provides virtually painless hair removal because the tip of the laser is -3 degrees Celsius.
Missy’s Ink & Laser is also one of few studios in the area to ofer electrolysis, a hair removal service for women with lighter-colored hair.
“I’ll be one of the few people in this area who do electrolysis. It’s kind of a dying field but it is still needed,” explained Duncan.
Duncan’s certification was a huge accomplishment for her at 50 years old. Af-
ter an over 30-hour laser and light-based hair removal course by the Florida Electrolysis Council, Duncan had to go to Orlando to take the exam.
“I’ve always not been a good test taker, so I was scared to death,” admitted Duncan. “But I had something to prove to myself pretty much. … It’s a huge accomplishment for sure.”
Duncan started Missy’s Ink in 2017 after being a photographer for 20 years. Looking for a change, a door opened for her to start her career in permanent makeup.
“God just lays it all out for you. When one door opens and another one closes, you kind of just run through it,” said Duncan.
Missy’s Ink ofers permanent makeup, including areola pigmentation for breast cancer patients, in addition to hair removal services.
“I always try to treat my clients the way I would like to be treated as a client,” said Duncan. “And making women feel comfortable.”
For more information on Missy’s Ink, visit Duncan’s website at missysink.com or call 813-659-0648. Missy’s Ink is located in Crest Pointe Towne Center at 3117 Lithia Pinecrest Rd. in Valrico.

Frank Trunzo, owner of Krazy Kup in Plant City, is the head auctioneer for Sotheby’s Concierge Luxury Real Estate Auctions. Trunzo’s path to this auspicious role has been an interesting one.
Trunzo grew up in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He worked as a railroad brakeman and a lead singer in a production rock band in Texas. The latter did not last long, and he moved back to Pittsburg, where became an antique dealer. He was then hired on to be an auctioneer apprentice. He became a prominent auctioneer in Pittsburg and then landed in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he became the go-to celebrity auctioneer. He was thriving in the business.
Unfortunately, his personal life was not so successful. Following a divorce from his first wife, he moved back to Pittsburg, where he met the love of his life: his wife, Wenda. Trunzo explained, “During our time in Pittsburg, my antiques and auction knowledge landed me a position as head auctioneer of the then world-famous Great Gatsby Architectural Antiques Auction in Atlanta.”
Trunzo continued, “A sudden death of the owner ended that quest but opened a door to become head auctioneer at Dargate Galleries, a newly formed upscale antiques and art gallery in Pitts-
burg.”
Trunzo was then ofered a job in Florida. “In 10 days, I won the state auctioneer championship and two auto auctioneer jobs,” Trunzo explained.
“Success of a contract auctioneer was mine. I was working contract auto auctions throughout the East Coast every day. Then, to my dismay, the internet captured the market. Trunzo then established a benefit auction business, which took of. Then, another opportunity presented itself. “I was ofered head auctioneer of a newly formed luxury real estate auction company. It was a big gamble,” Trunzo said.
“I have pedigree now. I went from selling items for one dollar in a country hall auction barn to selling multimillion dollar properties,” Trunzo said.
Trunzo has conducted over 5,000 auctions valued at over 5 billion dollars. “I hold the world record for the most expensive properties sold at live auction. I have conducted two historic auctions at Sotheby’s New York gallery and one in London,” Trunzo added.
To keep up the energy he needs Trunzo owns the popular Krazy Kup cafe ofering live music, authenic cofee, events and private rooms, located at 101 EJ Arden Mays Blvd. Plant City. For info, visit www.krazykup.com.

MARINERS’ CHURCH DETROIT, MICHIGAN
Mariners’ Church is widely considered the ‘spiritual lighthouse’ in Detroit, Michigan and the second-oldest church in the city. It was popularized by the 1976 hit song by Gordon Lightfoot, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
The church was founded in 1842 and has long been the center for the Great Lakes community. Each year on November 10, the church holds a memorial service to honor the crew of the SS Edmund Fitzgerald and all the other mariners who have lost their lives on the Great Lakes. During the services, the church bell is rung in honor of those sailors and their families.
After the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975, the pastor of the Mariners’ Church led the first memorial service for the crew members who had lost their lives. The church had a long history of ministering to the needs of sailors and their families, and the church bell was used to signal ships coming into port.
In honor of the 29 crew members who had perished in the tragedy, the bell was rung 29 times during the
service. This tradition is described in the last verse of Lightfoot’s most beloved hit where he described a solemn scene at Mariners’ Church: “The church bell chimed ’til it rang 29 times / For each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
This ritual has been observed every year since the disaster and has become a significant part of the area’s cultural legacy. The tradition of ringing the bell at the Mariners’ Church ensures that the memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its crew will never be forgotten.
Last month, the bell at Mariners’ Church rang out again — now chiming 30 times to honor those perished sailors along with the artist who famously memorialized them in song. Lightfoot passed away on May 1 at the age of 84.
Mariners’ church is located at 170 E. Jeferson Ave. in Detroit. It holds church services each Sunday and is considered part of the Anglican Church. For more information, visit www.marinerschurchofdetroit.com.
Live Like You Mean It ... Confession Puts Us All On Equal Footing
I can’t begin to count the number of times I have attended church and been inspired to think, or act, in response to a powerful sermon. But this Sunday, it was another part of worship that stayed with me long after the benediction. So today, I’m going to talk about a less celebrated element of worship: the confession.
Many faith traditions skip confession entirely, but I have long felt a holy afrmation when I participate thoughtfully. Then, during worship this past weekend, I was prompted to think about ‘corporate confession’ in a way that dovetails with one of my core beliefs about humanity.
Regular readers have heard me say this time and again, but it bears repeating: I be-
lieve we are all wrong at least half the time — me in particular. Yet we live in this cultural … political … religious moment where people seem to be obsessed with being right; not just that, but also obsessed with the other guy being wrong.
By having a liturgy of confession close to the beginning of the church service, we consciously enter worship as people who stand equally in need of forgiveness, and humility, and the mercy of God. “In a world of ‘I’m right,’” my pastor said, “confession reminds us that we are all wrong.”
“This puts us all on equal footing.
“It’s me, it’s me, O Lord, “Standin’ in the need of prayer;
“It’s me, it’s me, O Lord, “Standin’ in the need of prayer.”
It’s me, O Lord! I was thinking about this the other day, when Rebekah and I were talking about how much efort so many ‘Christians’ put into excluding, condemning, judging, restricting and otherwise insisting that God endorses their cultural (and political) passions, proclivities and prejudices.

Meanwhile, Jesus Himself stands at the door and declares that we all fall short of the glory of God — but that we are all welcome regardless because we are covered by grace and wrapped up in love. Covered by grace and wrapped up in love. I like that; I believe it’s a good place to conclude.

LOCAL DUO TURN ADVERSITY INTO NEW LAWN CARE BUSINESS
Courageous, brave, determined. These are just some of the words that describe the owners of O My Lawn.
Taylor and Jared Ramella have pushed through adversity and come out the other side with their new small business, O My Lawn LLC.
Jared has always had a passion for being outside and working in the yard. He has memories of his grandfather driving him around with a push mower and advertising as RentA-Kid for lawn care; working in the yard even as a young child put Jared into the landscaping industry for a long time.
In 2014, Jared was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. After years of gazing out the window and watching someone else mow their grass, Jared decided he was tired of watching someone work on something he loved.
After getting married in February this year, Jared is more than ready to be able to support his family, and O My Lawn was the perfect solution for the Ramellas.
TWO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS START CHEER TEAM FOR PEERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
By Makenzie Atkins Noel
“I truly just wanted to be a member of society again,” said Jared, the face and ‘legs’ of O My Lawn, “and truthfully, give myself a purpose while being a provider for my now family.”
Serving the Wimauma, Brandon and Riverview areas,
O My Lawn is the newest lawn care business in the community. With a focus on restoration and monthly lawn care, O My Lawn provides mowing, weed eating, leaf blowing, edging, hedge and tree trimming, weed control, pressure washing services and more.
Both Taylor and Jared were born and raised in the Ruskin/Wimauma area. The Ramellas enjoy being able to help community members in the area.
From needing others to help him to being able to help others, Jared has pushed through with Taylor by his side and can now continue working on his passion.

FishHawk Wolfpack Cheer is starting a challenger team for athletes with special needs that want to take part in their cheer program.
Callie Hancock, a junior student at Newsome High School and former member of Wolfpack Cheer, asked her mom to contact Fishhawk Wolfpack to ask if they could start the team in order to create an inclusive and fun opportunity for her peers with special needs. The Pop Warner Challenger division brings the Pop Warner experience to participants with special needs by ofering a structured cheer and dance program to athletes ages 5-18. Athletes learn cheer skills and a routine that they will perform at competitions where the other Wolfpack cheer teams will be competing.
“Junior Alyssa Gardner and I were both Wolfpack cheerleaders when we were younger. … We wanted to give kids of different abilities an opportunity to make memories like us,” explained Callie. The team will ofer a way for athletes with special needs to stay active and engaged with their friends while being supported by their coaches and teammates.
By Lily Belcher
Callie was inspired by her younger sister, Leyton, who has cerebral palsy, to be part of a team to reach FishHawk-area kids with special needs.
“She is my biggest inspiration and I have seen everything she has been through. As she has gotten older, it has been harder and harder for her to participate in younger kid activities. This program allows her and other special needs kids in our community to participate in ways that they normally cannot,” said Callie.
The co-ed team will start on Wednesday, August 2, with practices on Wednesday nights. Callie is hoping to have around 10 athletes on the cheer squad in their inaugural season. Students between 5-18 years old can register online for $150, which includes a practice set, uniform and bow.
“I was not surprised at all. Callie is the hardest working, motivated and driven teenager I know,” said Callie’s mother, Malinda Hancock.
To register for the challenger team or other 2023 teams, visit their Facebook page, go to www.fishhawkwolfpack.com or contact fhwolfpackcheercoordinator@ gmail.com.

Imagine going to a restaurant with a dairy allergy and ordering a burger. When the burger is delivered, it has no bun, no condiments, only lettuce and a patty. What happened? The restaurant wasn’t trained in food allergies or sensitivities, so to be safe it took most of the food away. Anyone who struggles with food allergies and sensitivities understands this scenario all too well.
The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America states that in America, as of 2021, 16 million adults and 4 million children have food allergies. When so many Americans deal with food allergies/sensitivities, it can be di f cult for families to know how to navigate restaurants safely.
Thankfully, many large chain restaurants provide allergy menus when requested and bring out a manager to discuss safe options. But not all restaurants are created equal in dealing with food allergies. It’s important to find a restaurant that trains its sta f , waiters/ waitresses and cooks in properly dealing with food and teaching knowledge of whether something would be cross-contaminated or not.
In the Brandon/Valrico/Riverview area, there are a few tasty options to eat at that are fairly allergy-conscious, such as: Vine Vegan, Mellow Mushroom and Cali.
Danielle Stevens opened Vine Vegan five months ago as a labor of love. That is, the love of sharing vegan, plant-based fare. For those who su f er from gluten, dairy or egg sensitivity/allergy, there are many options to choose from on the
menu. Vine Vegan has a 3,000-squarefoot location and is a fast-casual setting with dine-in and carry-out options, all within a family-friendly environment.
Justine Grossberg, Vine Vegan’s restaurant manager, stated that “the restaurant tries to take every precaution to avoid potential allergens when a customer informs of an allergy.” Employees clean the cooking surface, change gloves and write the allergen on the ticket. Then a binder of every ingredient is reviewed with the customer and a manager comes out to discuss food options.
Vine Vegan is located in the Brandon Crossroads Plaza at 2080 Badlands Dr. in Brandon. It is open Sunday to Monday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; Tuesday to Thursday,
8 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Friday to Saturday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. For Vine Vegan’s menu, visit www.vinevegan.com.
Another allergy-conscious restaurant is Mellow Mushroom. Mellow Mushroom is a sit-down chain restaurant that has been around for the last 40 years. It primarily serves stone-baked pizza, but also sandwiches, calzones and even vegan/vegetarian food. The franchise focuses on nutrition and makes sure to source healthy ingredients into the food it serves. Mellow Mushroom’s menu indicates what is gluten-free or dairy-free for those with gluten or dairy allergies, making it fairly easy to determine what is safe to eat. There is also a whole section of the menu dedicated to gluten-free options. If there are other allergies/sensitivities to food, there is a feature on Mellow Mushroom’s website with which customers can select an allergen and then see their food options.
By Ashley Abene
Mellow Mushroom is located at 10959 Causeway Blvd. in Brandon in the Causeway Shoppes plaza. Its hours are Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m., and Friday to Saturday, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. To see Mellow Mushroom’s menu, visit www.mellowmushroom.com.
Cali is also an allergy-friendly option to choose from in the area. In 2005, the first Ciccio-Cali restaurant chain opened in Florida. Cali is a family-owned-and-operated chain with four locations in the Tampa Bay area: Tampa Palms, St. Petersburg, South Tampa and Brandon.
The Cali restaurants aim to provide ingredients that are antibiotic-free and hormone-free. Its menu ranges from rice bowls to wraps and pizza. Cali has a fast-casual setting with dine-in and carry-out options. Finding allergy-friendly foods is easy with this menu. Gluten-free or dairy-free options are indicated on the main menu. But if a customer has a soy, peanut, tree nut or egg allergy, the staff are often able to suggest options to eat.
Cali is located at 11230 Sullivan St. in Riverview, near Winthrop Village. Its hours are Monday to Thursday 11 a.m.9 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; and Saturday to Sunday, 10 a.m.-9:30 p.m. To see Cali’s menu, visit https://www. eatatcali.com/.
Although these three restaurants are allergy-friendly, each place has indicated that cross-contamination of allergens can occur while cooking, so customers to be aware of that when ordering food.

35,000 People Hear Te Gospel
During Franklin Graham’s God Loves You Tidewater Tour
Evangelist Franklin Graham concluded his God Loves You Tidewater Tour last month in North Carolina. Graham and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) partnered with over 885 churches for the tour.
The six-day tour drew an attendance of more than 35,000 people.
“Night after night we have seen hundreds and hundreds of people respond to the good news of Jesus Christ,” said Graham.
“Here in the Baltimore area, the hurt and pain is evident in many communities,” Angel Núñez, a pastor in Timonium, Maryland, said. “Drugs, violence, human trafcking and hopelessness reign. Many people are broken,
and they have lost all hope,” he continued.
Last fall, Graham wrapped up his 2022 God Loves You Tour in Minnesota. During the six-city tour, the good news was preached to over 50,000 people.
More Tan 60,000 Students Gather For Worship Event At University Of Oklahoma
A Christian revival at University of Oklahoma’s Memorial Stadium drew thousands after a ‘Fill the Stadium’ mission set out to restore faith among America’s youth. The star-studded event featured performances from Grammy Award winner Chance the Rapper as well as religious artists like Chandler Moore, Kari Jobe and more.
The event appeared to have roughly 30,000 people in attendance, the University of Oklahoma’s student paper reported.
Pulse Ministry had been organizing the event since last fall. Pulse Ministry’s founder, Nick Hall, said he believes the current American culture is driving young people to turn to their faith.
Dolly Parton Opens Up About Te Role Of Faith In Her Life And Career
Beloved country music icon Dolly Parton has recently opened up about the profound influence her Christian faith holds on her personal life and illustrious career, emphasizing the indispensable role spirituality
serves as a compass to guide her life’s path.
In a heartfelt interview with Fox News, the 77-year-old singer shared her testimony, expressing how her faith has been an encouragement and resilience throughout her life. “My faith impacts everything that I do because I do believe that, through God, all things are possible,” Parton confessed. “And so, I always ask God to bless everything that I do and the people that I work with and to bring all the right things and right people into my life and to take the wrong ones out.”
Parton’s faith has also led her to collaborate with Christian music artists, winning Grammys with both Zach Williams and For KING & COUNTRY.
Chris Pratt Boldly Quotes Scripture Amidst Relentless Criticism Over His Faith
Hollywood star Chris Pratt, best known for roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, has often been vocal about his Christian faith. This openness, in an industry often seen as secular, has not gone without criticism and controversy. Yet, Pratt remains steadfast and unapologetic, showcasing an inspiring adherence to his beliefs.
At a recent screening for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Pratt faced the topic head-on, acknowledging the criticisms over his faith. “That’s nothing new, you know. If I was of this world, they would love me just like that, but, as it is, I’ve chosen out of this world. That’s John 15:18-20.” He further emphasized saying, “That’s the way it is, nothing new — 2,000 years ago, they hated [Jesus], too.” Pratt’s reference to biblical Scripture and his equating of the disdain for his faith with historical persecution of Christ, cements his place as a Hollywood figure unafraid to openly embrace his Christian faith. Despite the scrutiny, Pratt shows that faith can be an unshakeable foundation, a source of strength amidst criticism.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN COLLEGE OFFERS THE WRIGHT TOUR
When thinking of a famous architect, the name that probably comes to mind is Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most famous 20th century architect. Perhaps you’ve seen photos of the remarkable Fallingwater home in rural Pennsylvania or the iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York City. But here in our backyard is one of Wright’s greatest triumphs, a literal architecture museum disguised as a university campus: the beautifully designed grounds, chapels, ofces and eye-popping buildings of the lovely Florida Southern College in Lakeland.
In 2012, the Florida Southern College Historic District was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior for being the largest single-site collection of Wright architecture in the world. Daily tours take visitors through a mile-long covered esplanade artistically designed to replicate the orange grove that once covered the grounds, complete with tree trunks, leafy coverage and even individual oranges. Our entertaining and informative tour guide had ready answers to our many questions and peppered interesting historical anecdotes throughout
By Jef Hoening
the tour. You will also get exclusive access to two beautiful chapels — the Annie Pfeifer and Danforth chapels, as the college was once a Methodist seminary. The chapels were meticulously designed for beauty, modernity and efciency, even incorporating unique Native American motifs.
Many buildings incorporate water features and individually hand-placed colorful glass pieces that capture bright Florida sunshine for beauty inside and out. At the campus center, check out the large reflecting pool, a rendering of the local lakes of ‘lake land.’ Wright designed fountain jets to shoot streams of water 45 feet high, replicating a domed collegiate building. This design in the early 20th century was over 60 years before the technology was available, a sign of Wright’s ingenuity. The tour ends at the fascinating Usonian home, a 1,333-square-foot, full-scale example of a planned faculty home designed for professors at the college. Unfortunately, none were ever built, as money ran out and costs were too high.

Steve Holland and Ken Anderson have been friends since grade school. They have also been the owners of Brandon Auto Services for more than three decades. “We have been part of the Brandon community for 52 years,” Holland said. “My father originally owned Holland’s Auto Service in Brandon on Robertson, across from where the old library used to be. When he decided to sell the business; Ken and I decided to buy the business.”
Brandon Auto Services is the community’s one-stop shop for a wide variety of auto needs. “We have parts for vehicles, and we do general repairs, engine/ transmission repairs, collision repairs and tire services,” Holland said. “We work hard to purchase damaged or used vehicles so we can recycle parts. This is an extremely important part of the automotive supply chain.”
Their customers get options in purchasing a quality used part that has a possible warranty ranging from 101 days to lifetime. Think of purchasing a used part when you need a wheel, a car body part, transmission or an engine.
If you ask Holland and Anderson what makes Brandon Auto Services different from other auto services in the

During His ministry, Jesus frequently challenged conventional wisdom, and He also encouraged His followers to radically demonstrate God’s love. He often did this through the use of parables. Jesus used these short stories to relay important instructions and lessons in ordinary language. There are more than 30 parables in the Bible, each with its own dynamic lesson.
The Parable of the Lost Sheep is a short but powerful parable told by Jesus to illustrate the love and compassion that God has for every person. The parable is found in the Gospels of both Matthew and Luke. Jesus told the story in response to criticism by the religious leaders for “eating with sinners.” They were ofended that Jesus would associate with these types of people. Jesus turns towards the crowd and tells the story of how a shepherd left his flock of 99 sheep to go find one lost sheep.
Luke 15:3-7: “Then Jesus told them this parable: Suppose one of you has a
hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
This parable explains how God is seeking out his lost children and rejoicing when they are found. The heart of God is like a parent searching for a lost child. If a child is lost or separated from a parent, who wouldn’t go to extreme measures to find their lost child? Most parents would leave everything behind to search for their child who had wandered of. This parable paints the picture of the type of love God has for us. That is why God is often referred to as The Good Shepherd.
The parable of the lost sheep teaches us how we should love others regardless of how they look or act. We have been called to love and care for all people. Search for and love the lost sheep. This is what God is calling us to do.
