Miguel de la Ossa (Madrid, 1990) is an architect that holds a Master’s degree with honors by Madrid Polytechnic School of Architecture. He has experience in architecture firms in Madrid and New York and also as an editor in Arquitectura Viva magazines. Passionate and committed, he loves any kind of creative process, always seeking for innovation and beauty. Aside from architecture, music is his other big passion. Jazz lover, pianist and saxophonist, this passion is always his travel partner.

"THE PAN PALACE": GASTRO-CULTURAL CENTER, Madrid Mentor: Juan Herreros

Location: Madrid, Spain

Year: 2015

DESCRIPTION: The Pan Palace is a flexible building open to unpredictability of use by citizens and integrated within day to day life in LavapiĂŠs neighborhood in Madrid. A steel column mesh supports different space typologies (music halls, kitchens, classrooms, greenhouses, etc.) that meddle into the existing buildings of the block. DISCO + DWELLINGS AT THE MINISTRIES PARKING, Madrid Mentors: Juan Herreros + Michael Stanton

DESCRIPTION: At the 1950s nowadays underused ministries parking in Madrid, the restructuring project is a two strategies idea. The first one is to build a big disco inserted in the old concrete structure; whereas the second one is a system of dwelling containers hanging on the old steel structure. EXPRESS WEDDING CHAPEL IN EUROVEGAS Mentor: Federico Soriano

DESCRIPTION: An express wedding must be the fastest but also the most fun wedding ever. So the express wedding chapel project is a streamlined pavilion formed by curved frames that respond to the wedding schedule, the acoustics and the environments that every space requires. After the whole term, the final exercise review consisted on a big printed 0.8 x 2.4 m (32 x 95 inch) plan plus a 1.8 m (6 feet) scale model. PUBLISHED IN: http://goo.gl/nzpVJN

Client: Europan 12

DESCRIPTION: The proposal is an infrastructure that transforms the German military base into a new neighborhood. A cherry blossom red belt links it with the rest of the city, and the old barracks are converted by adding to them cultural and residential buildings. DRIVERLES FUTURE / 9 MILLION CITY Type: Competition/Proposal

DESCRIPTION: One of the most crucial challenges for the not so far future of New York City is how to address transportation in a city nearly to reach 9 million inhabitants. In the Driverless Future competition we proposed a smart digital system that would provide more flexibility to the streets and would enhance public life. DESCRIPTION: Jersey City should not only observe high residential towers that change dramatically the urban landscape and life. New public spaces sensitive with their background could be more interesting. We proposed a park as a topographical intervetion in the area. By lifting the ground in different stripes, the park offers multiple connections to the program underneath and to the tower projected next to it.

DESCRIPTION: Fotografiska is a photography center based in Stockholm that has decided to expand its horizons with a second headquarter in New York City. The new space will be within a historic building, Church Mission House, which will offer a new cultural destination in a privileged location. PERSIAN SYNAGOGUE Type: Commission

DESCRIPTION: In a garage landmark building in the Upper East Side dating early XX century, the commission was to create a worship space for a persian Jews congregation. Within the limitations of code and the synagogue design rules, we proposed a building that is a metaphor of the junction of New York life with traditional persian culture. A space for congregation and also for sharing traditions.

OYSTER BAY SYNAGOGUE Type: Commission

Walls Open Up

DESCRIPTION: A small Jewish congregation in Oyster Bay, at Nassau County in New York, decided to renovate its synagogue, a mid XX century building in a residential area full of vegetation. Within a low budget, the idea is to increase the amount of natural light inside the building, make a grander entry area and set a SCHEME more flexible sanctuary space. Walls Open Up Overall, the building becames a new temple in the woods.

DESCRIPTION: Arquitectura Viva magazines is divided into three periodical publications: AV Monographs, Arquitectura Viva and AV Proyectos. I was in charge of AV Proyectos magazine, that focuses on design projects with special attention on competitions and construction details and it also has sections that report current exhibitions and notorious architecture photographers. New Bordeaux Stadium

Situado en el barrio de Bordeaux-Lac, al norte de la ciudad, el nuevo estadio de Burdeos —que serå la sede del FC Girondins— tiene capacidad para 42.000 espectadores y cuenta con un campo de 68 x 105 metros, que puede ampliarse para acoger partidos de rugby, conciertos y otros espectåculos. El proyecto reinterpreta los tres elementos constitutivos de este tipo de edificio: el graderío, los espacios de transición, y la imagen de conjunto, y los adapta a las condiciones específicas del lugar, logrando así aunar la funcionalidad con una identidad única. La inauguración del estadio estå prevista para mayo de 2015, y acogerå cinco encuentros de la Eurocopa 2016.

Located in the quarter of Bordeaux-Lac to the north of Bordeaux, the new stadium – which will become the home of the FC Girondins – seats a maximum of 42.000 spectators, with a football pitch of 68 x 105 meters that can be extended for rugby games, concerts and other shows. The project reinterprets the three fundamental elements of a stadium: the bowl, the concourse, transitional element between the field and the surroundings, and the overall appearance. These three criteria are adapted to the specific conditions of the site, and combined to achieve functionality and a strong identity. The stadium’s inauguration is in May 2015, and it will host five Euro 2016 matches.

Six Projects in Six Countries

Ganador del concurso internacional celebrado en 2009, donde competía, entre otros equipos, con Morphosis, à balos+Sentkiewicz —ambos tambiÊn premiados—, MVRDV y Zaha Hadid, la oficina de Rem Koolhaas comenzó la construcción del Taipei Performing Arts Center en 2012, según un proyecto que propone una revisión tipológica de los auditorios tradicionales. A punto de finalizar las obras, el complejo estå formado por tres salas autónomas que se conectan entre sí dentro de un cuerpo cúbico central. Esta organización permite una gran variedad de configuraciones, resultando así un conjunto flexible que va mås allå del tipo convencional para un centro de artes escÊnicas.

OMA’s project was the winner in the international competition held in 2009, where teams like Morphosis, à balos + Sentkiewicz – whose design received the third prize –, MVRDV and Zaha Hadid participated. The office of Rem Koolhaas launched the construction of the Taipei Performing Arts Center in 2012, with a design that proposes a typological revision of conventional auditoriums. Now nearing completion, the TPAC consists of three theaters that function autonomously but plug into a central cube. This arrangement allows the stages to be modified or merged into a variety of configurations, generating a space that offers greater flexibility than the conventional performance center type.

A fin de mejorar el trĂĄfico en Londres, en 2007 se aprobĂł el mayor proyecto de infraestructuras de Europa: Crossrail, una conexiĂłn ferroviaria de 40 estaciones y con 42 kilĂłmetros de nuevos tĂşneles que atraviesa la ciudad de este a oeste. Norman Foster es el autor de una de las nueve estaciones de nuevo diseĂąo que incluye el proyecto: Canary Wharf, prĂłxima a la de metro con el mismo nombre construida por el estudio en los aĂąos 1990. Una cubierta de madera y cojines de ETFE, de 310 metros de largo y 30 de ancho, envuelve y unifica los accesos, las cuatro plantas comerciales con cafĂŠs y restaurantes y el jardĂ­n pĂşblico de la azotea, ya inaugurado. Los trenes circularĂĄn a partir de 2018.

To improve traffic conditions in the city, in 2007 London approved Crossrail, the largest infrastructure project in Europe, comprising 40 stations and 42 kilometers of new tunnels connecting London from east to west. Norman Foster was commissioned to design one of the nine new stations included in the project, Canary Wharf, close to the station of the same name and also designed by his office in 1990. The 310-meter-long roof, made of wood and ETFE cushions, arches 30 meters over the park and unifies the four levels of retail, pavilions, station entrances, and the roof garden, which is already open to the public. Train services will begin to operate in 2018.

Conceived as an international landmark in the dissemination of art, culture, and education, and also as a new activity hub to invigorate city life in Santander, the Botín Centre by Renzo Piano involves a complete urban transformation that restores the connections between the historic fabric and the bay, restructuring the Albareda harbor and the Pereda gardens. Galardonado, entre otros, con el Praemium Imperiale en el aùo 2014, sus propuestas mås recientes exploran nuevos conceptos espaciales y sensoriales, con especial atención a la relación con el lugar, la luz y los materiales. Sus acuarelas, autÊnticas investigaciones conceptuales y formales, constituyen una valiosa herramienta de proyecto.

Architect of the Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, the Chapel of St. Ignatius in Seattle, the Glasgow School of Art, and Linked Hybrid in Beijing, Steven Holl (Bremerton, Washington, 1947) established his New York firm in 1976. Today the studio is a 40-person team that he directs with partners Chris McVoy and Noah Yaffe. The firm also has an office in Beijing. Holl was honored with the 2014 Praemium Imperiale. His most recent proposals explore new spatial and sensory concepts, with special attention to the relationship with the place, light, and materials. His watercolors are true conceptual and formal pieces of research that become valuable design tools.

Fruto de un acuerdo suscrito por Emiratos Ă rabes y Francia en 2007, el Louvre de Abu Dabi busca encarnar el espĂ­ritu de apertura y de diĂĄlogo entre culturas; asĂ­, en sus 8.600 metros cuadrados de galerĂ­as, albergarĂĄ obras de arte de relevancia histĂłrica, cultural y social de diversas civilizaciones. DiseĂąado por Jean Nouvel dentro del ambicioso proyecto cultural y de ocio de la Isla de Saadiyat, el edificio consiste en una ‘ciudad museo’ protegida por una gran cĂşpula perforada que filtra la luz del sol. Junto a esta obra, el estudio galo desarrolla actualmente otros proyectos en el Golfo, como la Doha Tower o el Museo Nacional de Qatar, actualmente en construcciĂłn.

As a result of an agreement between the United Arab Emirates and France in 2007, the Louvre Abu Dhabi seeks to embody a spirit of openness and dialogue between cultures; thus, in its 8,600 square meters of galleries it will display artworks with a historic, cultural, and social value from different civilizations. Designed by Jean Nouvel within the vast cultural and leisure complex of Saadiyat Island, the building is designed as a ‘museum city’ protected by a large perforated dome that filters sunlight. Aside from this project, the French office has other works in the Gulf area, like Doha Tower or Qatar National Museum, currently under construction.

New Tate Modern

Tras su apertura en el aĂąo 2000, la Tate Modern de los suizos Herzog & de Meuron no solo ha revitalizado Southwark, el barrio en el que se ubica, sino que se ha convertido tambiĂŠn en el museo de arte moderno y contemporĂĄneo mĂĄs visitado del mundo, lo que animĂł a ampliar sus instalaciones. El pasado 17 de junio, tras seis aĂąos de obras, se inaugurĂł la Switch House, una pirĂĄmide torsionada de ladrillo de diez plantas que aĂąade al museo 22.500 m2 de galerĂ­as y espacios de recreo. AdemĂĄs, la nueva dotaciĂłn transforma los tanques de combustible bajo tierra de la vieja central en salas para performances. Estos tanques afloran en una gran terraza al aire libre al sur de la Sala de Turbinas.

Tate Modern has changed London since 2000. Herzog & de Meuron’s project has had a huge impact on the development of Southwark, and in fact Tate Modern has become the world’s most visited museum of modern and contemporary art. Such popularity and the need to accommodate a growing collection encouraged to undertake the museum’s expansion. After six years of construction works, 2016 has seen the opening of Switch House, a pyramidal 10-storey building that adds 22,500 square meters of galleries and new kinds of spaces. The new building also transforms the subterranean oil tanks into spaces for performances and installations. These tanks emerge in a large terrace south of the Turbine Hall.

New Design Museum

El antiguo Instituto de la Commonwealth en el distrito de Kensington, al oeste de Londres, se convertirå en el nuevo Museo del Diseùo, triplicando la superficie de su antigua sede en Shad Thames —que alberga ahora los archivos de Zaha Hadid—. The old Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, West London, will be the home of new Design Museum, tripling the exhibition space of its old headquarters in Shad Thames – and which now contains the Zaha Hadid archives. John Pawson (Halifax, Yorkshire, 1949) has designed the interiors of the museum, built in 1962 by the British practice RMJM. The project is included in the broader transformation carried out by the Dutch firm OMA with the Londonbased practice Allies and Morrison, and that comprises three residential blocks called Holland Green, which have helped finance the conversion project of the new museum, slated to open at the end of November.

DESCRIPTION: Hand sketching is one the very first and basic tools that we use to think about spaces in architecture and urbanism. Our hands are the most direct extension of our brain, so drawing is a permanent exercise of thinking. I use permanently this tool in my profession, just to solve a simple practical problem or to imagine different and complex possibilities for spaces and systems, like it is shown in the following pages of this portfolio.

LANDMARK NOTES

DESCRIPTION: Hand sketching is not only a creative tool, it also can serve as an analytical tool. We draw to understand what we observe and to learn from it. During my time in University I assisted to some life painting courses where I worked on landmark research and preservation. As an example, I was part of a team that worked on a XVIII century monastery in Madrid (Convento de las Salesas Reales). We did an exhaustive field measurement, always helped by hand sketching.

ABSTRACT EXPLORATIONS

DESCRIPTION: Drawing is a creative tool and an analytical tool, but it can also be a way to express feelings. I need to draw in many ocassions without thinking about it, just drawing. It is a relaxation mechanism that leaves a graphic imprint of what I am feeling in that specific moment. After finishing the act of free dawing, sometimes the result is a suggestive image that evokes me maps, cities, spaces, plans, sections, systems, etc. Somehow I try to look for new architecture languages with these explorations.
