“THE LAST TREE - PART 2”

The last Ravings was about the hemlock and fir screw up of successful tree identification. To set the record straight, I am NOT a total tree dummy. I can usually identify cedar, birch, white pine, maple, and a few others without any difficulty. I can even identify fir once again, after the hemlock white stripe confusion. So armed with more information, we again head back to the woods, better prepared to identify the desired hemlock tree. Walking along the woods road it is fir, spruce, spruce, fir, fir, and then suddenly HEMLOCK. A careful examination by both the missus and I and we agree it is indeed a HEMLOCK. YAHOO!! The only problem is, this particular hemlock had been CUT DOWN by me during the pruning process, in order to free up space for a white pine and a white birch!! Oh Dear!! Okay, this is only an 8 foot tree, the momma tree has to be around somewhere. Nope, can’t find it?? The problem of identifying little trees with needles hanging where you can easily examine them becomes much more difficult as you crane your head way back and stare at branches that are often 20 and more feet above your head. While hemlock can grow just about anywhere, they apparently prefer the edge of swamps, other wetlands and northern slopes. So it is off to tour the edge of our cedar swamp. Three hours or so later ... no hemlock!!! Several walks later … still no hemlock!! A two hour walk back and forth across a northern slope … no hemlock!! Is this a matter of tree ignorance and the inability to identify the rascals or has Mikie indeed killed the last hemlock in the 170 acre wood?? What is readily apparent so far from these adventures (misadventures) is that Mikie should have gotten a degree in forestry. Also apparent, is that Mikie and chainsaws are very dangerous. And ... good intentions guided by ignorance are continuing to further degrade our forests. Now, one family source claims that my father-in-law, who worked and roamed these woods for well over 60 years, once claimed that there was no hemlock on the property. Indeed, I may have inadvertently insured that the claim of no hemlock is still true to this day. Like most things in life, if you screw up, you are obliged to fix it. So over the next few years we will be planting some hemlock cones, trying to find some small trees to transplant and otherwise do what is needed to re-establish a hemlock population. 800

Distinguished Persons’ purses

The Salvation Army Auxiliary Saint John is hosting their 3rd “Distinguished Persons Purses” event on Sunday, May 6th 1:00pm at the Lily Lake Pavilion in Rockwood Park. To date we have 21 commitments of purses from well known women all across Canada (Natalie MacMaster, Senator Catherine Callbeck, Nazanin Afshin-Jam McKay, to name a few). Oftentimes when we receive a purse it has “treasures” tucked inside - a gift certificate, event tickets, a scarf, chocolates, etc. Our goal is to have 30 purses, of which approximately 5-10 will be used for a live auction. In addition to the silent and live auction of purses we usually have a number of original paintings from well known artists that will also be on the auction block. Liz Izaac, has generously agreed to act as auctioneer again this year. Tickets ($20) must be purchased in advance and are available at Cochrans in Rothesay, Pictures Plus on King Street and the Salvation Army office on Waterloo Street in Saint John. Seating is limited to 200 for a sit down luncheon of soup, sandwiches, dessert and tea/coffee. The Salvation Army Auxiliary may be contacted through the Community Church on Waterloo Street or the Centre for Hope, St. James Street. 606

Wise Woman’s Stone

A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. “I’ve been thinking,” he said, “I know how valuable the stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me the stone.” Author Unknown CC12

RE-ELECT BETH THOMPSON QUISPAMSIS COUNCIL

A NEW GARDENING SEASON

COMMUNITY COMMITTMENT FORWARD-THINKING

Winter is past and spring is here, There’s work to be done and debris to clear; New shoots have emerged and the joy will be ours, When we’ve cleaned up the bed for the burst of bright flowers. What a wonderful time of year as we see the renewal of life all around us! We were particularly blessed with a very mild winter and most perennials and bushes are showing signs of vigorous life, however, the joys of diminished snow fall actually rendered the winter the second driest one in 60 years. At the time of writing the ground is very dry already which doesn’t bode well for spring planting, any transplanting of perennials needs to be done with that fact in mind, be sure to water well morning and evening, or at the least in the evening, the hot sun of the day will simply evaporate the ‘juice’ and draw the roots to the surface for a rapid ‘fry up’. Day Lilies and Siberian Iris can be divided; a sharp curved Japanese saw is quite the best job for this, easily cutting through the toughest of roots and seemingly impervious to the inevitable rocks that seem to breed with gay abandon in the root systems. This is quite the best time of year to edge the borders, even rather blunt edgers will slice through the turf easily at this time of year and as you go about this task it’s the work of a moment to hoik out the weeds and tufts of grass beyond the edge, a couple of feet of weed free border makes the whole garden look as if a ‘pro’ is in residence, a welcome sight as you wander through the garden with a cuppa! Perhaps the most productive thing one can do for the plants is the rather tedious job of removing all the dead leaves and clearing around the clumps of perennials, keeping a watch out for the overwintering nasties that have used that protection as a free hotel during the winter. Having a pair of garden scissors handy to dispatch these chaps before they can lay eggs is a must (and quite the most merciful speedy way to be rid of them). A top dressing of compost mixed with a little well rotted manure around the clumps, will complete their joy, and, ultimately, yours! Have a great Gardening Season. 805

“salt of the earth” Award

Rothesay High School principal, Roger Brown, is retiring after 39 years as a school teacher and administrator in Hampton, Quispamsis, and Rothesay. When members of the Rothesay High Parent School Support Committee discussed possible retirement gifts for Mr. Brown, we knew he would want us to do something for students. Some of us had heard him say he wished there was more recognition for those students who might not be academic or sports stars but are “the salt of the earth”, all round good kids, the students you can count on to show up and participate. We are now accepting donations from former students, family of students and former students, fellow educators, and other members of the community whose lives have been enriched by Roger’s warmth, wisdom, and wit. This money will be used by Rothesay High School’s scholarship committee for the Roger Brown Award which will be given to a salt of the earth student when he or she graduates from Rothesay High. If you would like to contribute, please contact Robin Stanley at 847-9801 or stanleyr@nb.sympatico.ca or give your donation to Bonny Lafferty at the school office. 412

SJ Volunteer Centre Noon Nugget

Workplace bullying has many labels but common aspects are repetition and persistence. It consists of offensive, unsafe, unwanted, or intimidating behaviors and abuse of power in the workplace. Unresolved bullying escalates and influences workers’ intent to stay in the workplace. Bullying has negative effects on physical, mental, emotional, social, and financial health and on relationships and careers. People are bullied by both men and women. People are bullied by bosses, co-workers, subordinates, or clients. Bullying takes place in all kinds of workplaces. It is important to learn to see and name behaviours as inappropriate so we can stop them. This interactive session to be held on Wednesday, May 16th, with facilitator Dr. Judy MacIntosh, BN; MSc; PhD, explores what workplace bullying is, talks about some workplace bullying myths, looks at impacts on people and workplaces, and explores ways to begin to address it. “Noon Nugget” events are held at the Saint John Volunteer Centre, 66 Waterloo Street, Training Room Suite 224. Loyalist Celebrations in Saint JOhn

May 18th marks the 229th anniversary of the landing of the first Loyalist fleet in 1783, as well as Saint John’s 227th birthday, as Canada’s first incorporated city, in 1785, a direct result of the Loyalist landings. It was also a direct result of Loyalist landings that New Brunswick became a separate province from Nova Scotia in 1784. We are very excited about this year’s Loyalist Day celebrations and hope to have more people than ever participating with us, as once again the Lieutenant-Governor, His Honour Graydon Nicholas, will be speaking and St. Mary’s Band will be performing at this year’s ceremonies. The celebrations begin on Sunday, May 13th at 10:30am with a special Loyalist Day church service at historic Trinity Anglican Church on Germain Street, with members of the United Empire Loyalists’ Association attending in period dress. On Friday, May 18th ceremonies at City Hall Plaza begin at 10:15am, featuring the Lieutenant-Governor, St. Mary’s Band, local school children’s presentations, and members of the United Empire Loyalists’ Association in period dress. Local dignitaries will speak briefly at this occasion. Other highlights of the program for May 18th include the Loyalist Day proclamation by the town crier (in period dress), flag raisings, and the Mayor, serving Saint John’s birthday cake. At noon on Pugsley Wharf, the 3rd Field Artillery Regiment will fire canons - Saint John having the unique privilege of being the only non-capital city in Canada accorded the honour of firing a 21-gun salute in the absence of a member of the Royal Family. Loyalist House and the New Brunswick Museum will also be open to the public with free admission in the afternoon. In the evening of May 18th, there will be a Roast Beef Dinner at St. George’s Church Hall, 100 Watson Street West, Saint John – reception at 6:30pm, dinner at 7:00pm, $28/person. All are welcome; please contact Jim McKenzie at 832-5334 or Valerie Teed at 847-1465 for reservations by May 4th. We hope to see you at this cultural activity of such great significance to our city and province. 908

HRAA NEWS

Angling Season open now!: Please remember that there is no open season for salmon angling on the Hammond River, or any other river flowing into the Bay of Fundy. Unfortunately, at least one large female salmon was killed, and was found in the river on Monday. If you are fishing anywhere salmon could be present, remember to use a single, barbless hook, as it greatly increases the survival rate for released fish. Lakes open here on May 1st and with the mild weather conditions, fishing should be very good. Also, remember to wear your PFDs, the air may be warm, but the water is still cold! Annual Dinner: Tickets are selling fast for our annual fundraising dinner to be held on Saturday, May 12th at St. Mark’s. If you don’t have your tickets yet, please contact a committee member right away, as we are close to selling out! We’ll need volunteers to assist with the planning committee, obtaining auction items, and helping out at the event. If you have anything to donate, please drop it off at the centre, or contact committee members. Locally-tied flies always are a hit in the silent auction. Coffeehouse: The Coffeehouse planned for the Monday, May 28th will feature a line-up consisting of Ian MacDonald singer songwriter, The Usual Suspects, and The Band With No Name, a 50/50 draw, raffles and refreshments. New member’s forms and membership renewal forms will also be available. As well, the winning ticket for the Annual Anglers Draw will be drawn during the event, so there will be a last-minute chance to buy your tickets early in the evening. Found on Hammond River: Have you lost a box of trout flies on the upper Hammond River, somewhere above Scoodic Brook? They seem to have been in the river all winter, but are now cleaned and dried. “I Spy What’s AWESOME” Event

TIRE & AUTOMOTIVE

314 Rothesay Avenue, Saint John (506) 634-1050 Monday-Friday 8-5 www.fairweathertire.ca Saturday 8-12noon

To those who donated, those who bought, and those who helped make the auction a success, your kindness and generosity will never be forgotten. We are very graciously overwhelmed. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you more than words can say. Rick Shephard and Family

Between February 22nd and March 2nd students, staff and members of the community had the opportunity to log-on to our I SPY what’s AWESOME website and share with us what was AWESOME in their world. Building on the international best seller series The Book of Awesome and the website 1000awesomethings.com by Canadian blogger Neil Pasricha. Sometimes it’s tempting to feel that the world is falling apart. But awesome things are all around us. It seems like maybe these tiny little moments make an awesome difference in many of our crazy busy lives. As an event of the ‘Celebrate What’s Right with the World’ initiative in both districts, ‘I Spy what’s AWESOME’ demonstrated how we can improve areas of our lives when we are intentional about celebrating what is right with the world. It was a great week of recognizing what is awesome…a wonderful way to continue to reflect on the positives and remind us that the best things in life are free. Over 7300 entries were received from the greater Saint John community! This figure combines the 3,658 entries from School District 6 and the 3,695 entries from the School District 8 region. The schools in each category – elementary, middle and high school – with the highest participation will receive $250 to donate to a charity of their choice. There were several close races and the winning schools with the highest percentage participation are (District 6): High School - Pals Hampton; Middle School Quispamsis Middle School; Elementary - Apohaqui Elementary School. 825

Zoo Volunteer recruitment

Cherrybrookzoo.com, noahsark@bellaliant.net, 634-1440 A volunteer recruitment takes place at your Cherry Brook Zoo on Wednesday, April 25th at 6:00pm or Sunday, April 29th at 1:00pm at the zoo canteen. Learn about what zoo volunteers do and how their work benefits your local zoo. Volunteer ages are 16 years to seniors. Refreshments will be served. Your local zoo needs your time and talents. Your Cherry Brook Zoo celebrated Easter on April 7th. A newborn Mouflon lamb was the Easter zoo star! Two new Zebra arrived last fall and have settled in just fine. Damara Zebra are one of the rarest zebras species. They are a distant relative of the extinct Quagga species, which is remembered in the Zoo`s Vanished Kingdom Park. Rory the male zebra was born in 2006 and Rosa the female was born in 2009. All stripes and spots on animals are unique to each animal like our fingerprints. A baby zebra must memorize it’s mom’s stripe pattern and voice in the first 10 minutes of his life or it will die. Zebras do not adopt lost fowls. Zebras are threatened and in decline in some areas. Zebra are prey for many animals but zebra have great tools for protection from these predators: keen eyes, excellent hearing, great sense of smell (and lions do smell!). Living in a herd is wonderful protection as is their strength and speed - zebras can run 110km/65mph. Their color is a unique tool called Disruptive Coloration - lions try to see a young, old or injured zebra in the herd but all the stripes make the lions confused. Upcoming at your Zoo: May 13th, Mother’s Day, all day mothers and grandmothers receive a potted plant when visiting the zoo How can you financially help your local zoo and the animals: visit your zoo, become a yearly member, become a volunteer, visit the zoo gift shop, become a monthly sponsor. Nathan’s

Friends of the 1999 graduating class of Hampton High School have joined together to help fellow graduate, Carrie (Whalen) Beaudoin’s son Nathan. Nate, who just turned one, has a rare and complex congenital heart condition called Right Atrial Isomerism/Heterotaxy. More accurately, Nate has a whole body disease affecting most organs. He has no spleen and only the right half of his heart. Nate’s only hope of survival is a complex heart surgery that is only offered in Boston. The estimated cost for this surgery is approximately $300,000 not including accommodations or travel expenses. Nate is scheduled for surgery on June 7, 2012, approximately 50 days from today.

Please join Nate’s friends at Shiretown Publicans in Hampton on Saturday, May 12th at 6pm for an auction and entertainment to raise funds and help get him to Boston for his June 7th surgery. Festivities include a 50/50 draw, auction and entertainment by Fredericton based band, Southern Drive, who were featured on Canada’s Got Talent. We are graciously accepting items, services or monetary donations for this event. If you or anyone you know are in the position to make a donation, please contact fundraising coordinator, Kate (Dempster) McCann at 832-2603 or 647-7771 and we will arrange for pick up. Sincerely, Kate (Dempster) McCann, Erin (Rupert) Duncan, Julie Snodgrass, Kate Shannon, Katie Kilpatrick and Miranda Kilpatrick.

BOTTLE DONTATIONS DESIRED

My name is Jordan London and I am a grade 6 student at Rothesay Park School and I have been working very hard to raise money for the 2012 Relay for Life-Hampton, Snow Angels team. I made the decision to join the Relay and raise money for cancer research because I have had too many family members suffer from this mean disease called Cancer. I have lost my grandfather (Arthur London Sr) and my great-grandmother (Annie Hull) to this devastating disease; as well my grandmother (Jackie London) is a cancer survivor, along with many many other family members. From now until May 30th I am organizing a bottle drive with the help of my parents (Art & Michelle London) and my two brothers Josh age 6 and Jamie age 5, my cousin Wyatt aged 12 and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Last year we were able to pass our goal of $1000; with the help of our family, friends and community we were able to raise a total of $2303.45 during the bottle drive. I would be honoured to be able to raise this amount again this year, in memory and in honour of all of those who have battled cancer. If you could please donate your bottles to this wonderful cause, we may be able to beat this disease. Please contact us at 3334223 (you can leave a message), at jjjqis@nb.sympatico.ca, or on facebook (please feel free to invite anyone you would like to the group as well.) Thank you for your support, and “thank you” to everyone who has already donated their bottles. 413

If your dog is scratching, and doesn't have fleas, it's probably the food he’s eating... Dry, flakey, itchy skin & a dull coat are usually a sign of feeding low end super market food with pretty packaging. Corn, wheat and soy are cheap fillers that can cause allergies in your pet. Poultry by-products are rendered parts of the slaughtered carcasses of poultry such as necks, feet, intestines etc. You'll feed less premium food than super market food resulting in much less stool. Most supermarkets brands use artificial colours, flavors and preservatives, by-products and cheap fillers.

Check the ingredient list on the bag to see what is in your pet’s food. 26 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis 847- PETS (7387) 1057 Fairville Blvd, West Saint John 672-PETS (7387)

The Big Rothesay Read gets bigger and better every year, but this year it has truly attained new heights. The Rothesay High School Engineering Club recently launched this year’s book title “The Book of (Even More) Awesome”, by Neil Pasricha, along with a payload containing cameras and other instruments, to a height of over 33 km – essentially to the edge of space. The photos and videos returned are quite striking, and the curvature of the earth is visible. From this altitude, the cameras were able to see much of New Brunswick, as well as parts of Nova Scotia and Maine. “This is something the Engineering Club has been working on for a long time”, says JoEllen Jensen, a RHS language arts teacher and founder of The Big Rothesay Read. “The conditions, weather, winds, everything had to be perfect for the balloon’s launch, so it just turned out that the timing was perfect to include our Big Rothesay Read book as well!” “One of the students came to me and asked if they could launch the book, but it ended up being too heavy ... in the end they took the cover off one of the books and sent it up into the stratosphere along with the rest of the payload.” “I’ll bet the author, Neil Pasricha, would think that was pretty awesome!” The flight took two hours and at times experienced temperatures of -60 C and 110 km/h winds. The air pressure was about 1% of what it is at sea level. Conditions were more like those on the surface of Mars than on Earth. Photos, videos, and data from the flight are available on the website: rhsspaceflight.wikispaces. com. Neil Pasricha, author of “The Book of (Even More) Awesome”, will visit Rothesay on Friday May 11th for two public talks and Q&A’s. Groups participating in The Big Rothesay Read can enter a draw to win a Java Moose coffee party with the author at benbooks@ nbnet.nb.ca. 227

MUSINGS By Debbie Hickey

LIFE GETS AWAY

I started my day yesterday with at least the semblance of a plan of what I wanted to accomplish, one of which was to write my Musings. I had a couple of time specific appointments in the morning and the rest needed to fit in around those. But . . . the day came to an end and other than those two appointments not one thing on my To-Do list could be crossed off! Where did the day go? Well, let’s see. Things got off on the wrong foot right from the beginning, as I awoke at 4:45 am and was unable to get back to sleep. Now you might think that gives me a great headstart on my day, but not so. Instead of hopping out of bed and starting my day with a half hour to 45 minute walk, I was dragging around and settled in with my book until my usual walking time. BIG mistake. Park me with a book and time mysteriously just disappears. And it did. So instead of starting my day’s list early, I ended up actually running late on my morning routine. And tired. The first appointment was for 9:00am. That went fine. I then came home for a half hour before leaving for a 10:30 meeting at the office. So far so good. Still a little behind on my daily walking target, but doing okay. Got to the office in plenty of time . . . and received a phone call that the person I am to meet with is running a little behind and will not arrive until 11:00. No big sweat, there is plenty I can be doing at the office. But instead of being back home by noon as expected it was 12:45. Time for lunch and an hour long walk in the woods. So far the day was going along at least close to the plan. But then it took a turn in an unexpected direction and the rest of what was on the agenda went out the window. A phone call from our daughter had Mike and I heading to town to assist in her renovations. She has a great old house in uptown Saint John, but it needed a lot of work when she bought it a few years ago. They have found a lovely old home in Hampton they want, so the final renovations on the current house have suddenly gone on a priority list to get the house ready to list and sell. Instead of a day spent outside on a lovely spring day I was sanding walls and scrubbing down cupboards. And not writing Musings. By the time we got home in the evening my brain could no longer function sufficiently to string two words together, let alone 3 or 4 hundred. So here it is the next morning, completing a task from yesterday’s list that didn’t get done . . . and I am late for my morning walk. Out of step for the day already! Gotta go and catch up! “It gets late early out there” ~ Yogi Berra. 801
