tHe cRaYoN BoX A SLIVER OF SILVER

I find that we can become so convinced that what we think is right, that we refuse to listen to other people’s opinions. This is the basis upon which I decided to start this column. I’m calling this column The Crayon Box because in each interview I perform, I like to ask people what colour crayon they think they would be. Hello. My name is Edwin and I’m a co-op student working at Ossekeag Publishing. For those of you who don’t know, the Cooperative Education program provides an opportunity for high school students to spend their afternoons at a place of business, gaining real-life experience and hands on skills at a chosen job or position. It’s a nice test run to see if you’d like to have that job, before spending thousands of dollars at university or college only to find you don’t like the work. I am a Grade 12 student at Hampton High School. I wouldn't consider myself a typical teenager, which is fine by me. It’s good to be different. As you can guess from the title, I would want to be a silver crayon. It’s my favourite colour and personality tests that assign you a colour always give me silver. The courses I’ve enjoyed taking the most are Modern History, Sociology, Political Science, and Journalism. I live on a dairy farm with my mother, father, and brother. There are quite a few teachers and farmers in my family, so I know a fair amount about both professions. As far as what I want to do in my life, I’m not sure yet. But then again, most people who go to university change their mind at some point. This column is mostly going to be me interviewing our local politicians. Like it or not, politics is a very important part of

our world, and, in my opinion democracy only works when we stay informed. It can be very easy to become cynical about politics and believe there’s nothing we can do to improve our situation, but giving up won’t get anyone anywhere. In a world of fake news, it can be difficult to understand what is truly happening. Reading headlines and not researching the story can leave people with misinformed views. I wanted to take some time to connect with our local politicians, because I find most of us only know what is shown in the news or fake news on social media. I believe it is important to know and understand the person behind the politics. It’s easy to blame people we don’t know, especially when we don’t truly understand how government works, but by forming a connection with our legislative representatives not only we do we have a better understanding of politics, we are better able to make informed decisions during election years. So join me on my journey to engage our local political leaders. I think you’ll find some people who are truly trying to help you, however they can. (Please note: The NDP and People’s Alliance candidates were unavailable to give interviews. The lack of representation of these parties in no way reflects the views or opinions of Ossekeag Publishing) 0011 Edwin Earle Co-Op Student Ossekeag Publishing

LIFE BALANCE SPRING CLEANING FOR YOUR PSYCHE For many, the arrival of spring signifies new beginnings and the re energization of self. This is why spring-cleaning is so popular. It is a time to channel our newly found energy into something productive. This article will suggest ways to help you tackle spring-cleaning…of your psyche! By using Dr. Sirota’s approach to psychological decluttering as my resource, I will highlight steps that you can take to declutter your mind, by focusing on ways to rid yourself of built up negative selftalk, worries, and resentment. One of Dr. Sirota’s first suggestions in ridding yourself of negative mental buildup is to take a break from technology. By practicing social media awareness and reducing the amount of time you spend on social media, you are decreasing the likelihood of comparing yourself to others. Why is this important you ask? Comparing ourselves to

others, particularly through social media platforms, is proven to lead to feelings of depression and envy. Practicing self-compassion, in other words, silencing the inner critic, is a further tool used in psychological decluttering. By practicing selfcompassion, you are becoming increasingly self-forgiving and selfaccepting. You are acknowledging that you are a work in progress. You are recognizing that negative thoughts are a waste of mental space and energy. A simple way of accomplishing this suggestion is to write out all of the negative self-statements or thoughts that you can think of, and then writing out as many positive statements. These statements can include daily accomplishments, successes, etc. The goal is to overpower the negative thoughts with the positive ones, thus fostering an increase in selfconfidence and positive mood. As resentment and anger can create

mental clutter, it is important to find productive and conscious ways of managing and releasing these negative emotions. Creative tools of expression such as dancing, drawing, painting, writing, and music are all ways to help rid yourself of resentment and anger. Any sort of vigorous exercise can also help release negative emotions. A final method to help declutter your mind is to exercise gratitude. Writing out things that you are grateful for can improve your mood as it places emphasis on the positive, consequently diverting your a t t e n t i o n away from the 0040 negative.

Volunteer Week

It is National Volunteer Week, a time to celebrate and thank Canada’s nearly 13 million volunteers. Throughout Canada, in cities and rural communities, in homes, schools and organizations, young and old, working and retired, one in two Canadians volunteer their time to give back to their community. In 2010, 2.07 billion hours of volunteer work were done. To put that in

April 15th - 21st recreation, social services, and religious organizations are the areas that get the most volunteers, but volunteer opportunities can be found everywhere. The possibilities really are endless, from helping seniors or the youth, to food services, to transportation, to education, and so on. Volunteers reach out to engage in kindness and caring for others; they volunteer their time

to organizations for many reasons, including a desire to contribute to their communities, to use their skills and experience, or because they have been personally affected by the cause. They ask for nothing in return but a simple thank you. So this National Volunteer Week, let’s recognize our volunteers and all they do for us. Thank you.

HAMPTON-PIGGS PEAK NEWS

The tagline of the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is help, hope and opportunity. The words surround our Starfish logo designed by Sue Hooper. Our starfish program takes its name from the story of the young boy saving the starfish on the beach by throwing them back into the ocean. Like him, we may not be able to save all the starfish in Swaziland but we can help them one at a time. Our help, hope and opportunity tagline

and one-at-a-time theme also have deeper meanings. The opportunity refers not only to the opportunity given to the young people in Piggs Peak. It also refers to the opportunity given to individuals here in the Hampton area. It is an opportunity to help. Those of us involved with the Partnership understand that our neighbours in Piggs Peak are very much like us. They are bright and hard-working but, tragically, where they live often dictates if they will live. An education… something we take for granted here… is the single most important thing that will increase a young Swazi’s chances of survival. The Partnership gives you the opportunity to potentially save the life of a bright, hard-working young person. All you need to do is contact me or go to our website and become a Starfish sponsor for as little as $300 per year. We make it easy to do. And, like the boy on the beach, it takes just one person to make a difference. Esther Dlamini, a young Swazi woman wrote to the people in Hampton (since she wrote this, we’ve

832-5541

increased the number of Starfish students to 170): Hampton is a family, it is a lifeline for over 150 different people in the small town of Piggs Peak in Swaziland. It provides people with hope, hope of a better tomorrow because the hardest thing people face in the country is rejection due to not being educated. Hampton gives help to those that really need help and have no other way of getting it. The foundation has tried its best to take away the hard burden from the mothers and grandmothers that must work and slave day and night to provide a decent education to their children. The future leaders of tomorrow can learn without worry and are able to give it their all. I hope each one of you will play a part in creating a better tomorrow for young men and women in Swaziland. Let us help fight the spread of HIV/AIDS with educating the children of today so they can educate the ones of tomorrow. It takes one person to make a difference and I hope that one person is you. It is true that funerals are to celebrate the life lived and to honour that individual; but when it comes to dealing with the beginning of grief and loss, funerals are for the living. It is your family and friends that will need to adjust their lives, mend their hearts and learn how to go on without you. This is why we recommend having some kind of service or gathering, to begin this process. It is customary across the world to recognize death and its finality. Funerals are rituals for the living to show respect, say goodbye, give their grief a path and let support pour in. MORE THAN FITNESS ARE YOU TAKING CARE OF YOU Spring has finally come after a long winter; as the warmer weather and longer days finally arrive it is the time of year when we begin to feel renewed, rejuvenated and revitalized - or at least, we should be. Is this starting to happen for you? If not, maybe it is time to stop and take a look at your health and wellness routine and to ask yourself what am I doing to take care of me? As a busy mom working full time plus participating in a number of other committees and organizations, I totally get how we can end up slipping into a routine of putting ourselves last. While we know we should be eating better, getting more activity, sleeping more, etc... we just don’t feel we have enough hours in the day to make it happen. We get caught up in the craziness of running from one thing to the next - from work to kids’ activities to meetings and the list goes on. We end our days feeling exhausted,

and self-care is the very last thing we are thinking about – let’s face it most of us aren’t thinking about it at all. As we move in to this season of growth and renewal, I want to challenge you to sit down and take a few minutes to do a little check-in with yourself. Ask yourself honestly – am I doing the things I should be to take the best care of myself that I can so that I can feel my best and, in turn, take better care of those around me? If you answer no to this question, what are some simple things that you can begin to put in place to make sure that you are able to carve out some time for yourself each and every day to tackle the items on your self-care to do list so that you may live your best life and reclaim your health? Whether it is setting aside some time for meal prep to ensure you are nourishing your body with the best possible foods, carving out a few minutes each day

to move your body and be physically active or giving yourself permission to take a few minutes to yourself every day for meditation, reading or just plain breathing, think about what it is that you need most right now to bring yourself in to balance and how you can find it. While making ourselves a priority can be a challenge, especially for women, it is well worth the investment and something you will never regret doing. THREE GENERATIONS VOLUNTEERING AT THE LEGION Peninsula Legion Branch #62 is in a very unique position of having three generations of the same family volunteering at the Legion. Jo Burke, a member of the Peninsula Branch 62 Ladies Auxiliary, has been volunteering with the Auxiliary and Branch for many years at various functions such

as dinners, receptions, brunches, Canada Day, Remembrance Day, Poppy Campaign, etc. For the past few years Jo's daughter, Tracey Burke, has also been helping out at Brunches and dinners put on at the Branch. Most recently, for the last two years Jo's granddaughter, Torie Burke, who lives in Johnville, NB with

her parents Mel and Sherry, has been helping out at the Brunches when she is down on the Peninsula visiting family. Congratulations Torie, you are setting a great example for your generation to follow! 4922 Cover Photo: Jo, Torie and Tracey

Spring

Home Improvement Fresh Spring Inspiration

It happens to everyone. The snow starts to melt and you find yourself roaming around a home décor store looking at all the ways you can uplift your tired home. Not many have a magazine worthy home but does your space reflect who you are and how you feel? A true place of beauty is one where the owner is open to filling the home with elements of their infatuation over time. The trick is to be confident in showcasing what you know you love. For those people who love everything, where do you start? People pick bits of inspiration from different sources. Most people get overwhelmed by visiting all the stores in their city or spending three (or more) hours wandering around at a 40+ Years Experience

home show; one solution is to turn to the online fountain of information in the comfort of your own home. Pinterest.com will turn you from a Plain Jane to a Creative Queen. Type your problem in the search bar and thousands of ideas and solutions pop up. Houzz.com is another site specifically for room design used by people from around the world. People post their “looks” and it is easier to sort what you like from what you don’t. It is also a great place to look for local trade recommendations. Once you have some ideas, create a plan and a budget for your new room. If Trading Spaces taught us anything, it is that you don’t need a huge budget for a big impact. Some ways you can keep the cost low is shopping at home. Often

times when I am invited into a person’s home to create a design I end up in the basement. So many things can be re-purposed or considered trendy after a fresh coat of paint or new fabric. Perhaps you decided on classic Navy as the new accent color in your living room. Gather up all books with a blue tone cover and stack them on your coffee table. Top off with a small clear vase and a pink blooming flower. Instant Spring! Once you have gone through anything in the house that can be used think DIY. Need new artwork going up the staircase? Go online and search free printables in your theme and colors. Print on photo paper or on a matte paper, frame and hang. People will ask where you got them and you will be happy

THIS PLACE Bermuda or Canada A Move to Kingston, NB Was The Natural Thing. Don’t worry, Mom, I’m not staying. I’m never living in Canada, says first year university student, Karen Robinson. Karen grew up in Bermuda, but nearly thirteen years have gone by since that promise to her mom in 2005. Karen has made Kingston, NB home with her partner Stew and one-year-old daughter. It was the natural thing to stay, she says. I didn't like the winters, but I liked the people….I’ve got family all over the place, but I think the people in Canada are just the nicest, easiest to get along with - my kind of people. When we moved to Kingston, we started doing things I’ve never done before, she says. My mom couldn’t believe it once when she came to see me, and I was making jam. In Bermuda… we are more urban. Not many people grow their own vegetables. Her life on the East Coast is different than her upbringing: You just love the people here in Hampton: friendly and accepting. When I moved here I was

a very different person; you wouldn’t catch me eating moose and deer. I couldn’t imagine that. And now that is what we do regularly. We raise chickens.... I love the way I live. I’d never move anywhere else. Recently, the couple bought a new property in Clifton Royal. We have 31 acres, an old farmhouse with a garage, apple trees, two ponds, and it goes down to the water. We are going to build our dream home, she says. She likes the freedom of her lifestyle here, likes collecting maple syrup and growing vegetables. And she wants those same things for her daughter, and her future children. I want them to learn the things I never learned.... And to be environmentally conscious, she adds. I want them to grow up having fun on the land and outside. I grew up inside with TV, but there wasn’t a whole lot to do, so I want my kids to be able to go outdoors… I want them to look back at their childhood and know that they’ve had a lot of fun. Other advantages that she’s found since

having her daughter are the Hampton schools, and the Hampton Alliance For Lifelong Learning. She says, Hampton offers things that I don’t think people know, like the HALL group, for free. Overall, she says it was the people that drew her to the small town. Karen, Stew, and their daughter will begin building their dream home soon.
