As Kenny and Dolly sang, “it’s Christmas Time again, another year has come and gone, and I can’t help but wonder how the old folks are at home”. I might not be heading home with bells on, but I do love the idea behind the song. Whether your family is near or far, related by blood, or built around friends, this time of year, especially, it’s nice to reach out and touch the special people in your life.

MORE THAN FITNESS AVOIDING HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN As the holidays get closer, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to. You will get to spend more time with your family, hopefully be able to take some time off work, and participate in your annual traditions that occur around this time. Unfortunately, another thing that tends to happen every year during the holiday season is dealing with weight gain. Studies show that 80% of annual weight gain happens between Thanksgiving and New Years’ which means the majority of us will start off 2018 a little heavier. But it doesn’t have to be this way! There are several ways you can avoid gaining weight during the holiday season. You don’t have to be miserable during the holidays or feel like you are being left out just because you don’t want to gain weight. By being more mindful of the choices you make and implementing a few changes before the holidays begin, you can maintain your weight and
feel good about the choices you make. It is a good idea to start eating healthy before the holidays begin. Start to experiment with recipes and food choices that you enjoy and think about healthier alternatives to some of the treats and holiday dishes you may normally bring to gatherings. As we get into the busier holiday season, we often become less active as we are rushing around and out of our routines and what may be our regular physical activity pattern the rest of the year starts to dwindle as we move into the holidays. Before you get caught in this trap, make a plan for yourself to incorporate at least 15 minutes of physical activity into your daily routine each and every day of the week. Don’t have time to hit the gym? There are many quick and easy home workouts you can incorporate into your day to replace your regular routine. Finally, try to find ways to reduce your stress levels over the holidays. While it
is a time of year that is filled with fun, family and friends, for many of us, it can also be a stressful time. So be sure to take some time every day for yourself. Get out for a walk, practice some deep breathing or meditation or use any other techniques that help you relax. By staying focused on your goals for good health, you can enjoy the holiday season in such a way that you start off 2018 feeling good and ready to face the New Year! 0044

UNFILTERED EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY! With the Holiday season just around the corner, many of you will be cooking a Turkey dinner. Choosing the perfect wine to go along with it can seem overwhelming. This is because a turkey dinner is comprised of many different flavours. Considering the herbal-ness of the stuffing, the creaminess of the mashed potatoes, the sweetness of the cranberry sauce and the savoury notes in the gravy, it is no wonder people are confused! Although many people still believe that only white wine should be served with white meat, this is not the case. There are many red wines that suit a turkey dinner beautifully, simply stick to lighter styles, such as a Bourgogne, Beaujolais, or Pinot Noir. These are light enough to enhance the flavours of the turkey without overpowering it. As for whites a Chardonnay is always a beautiful match as the underlying apple, butter and toasty notes in the wine go beautifully with the turkey dinner. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is always a great match as well.
I cannot write this article without giving a shout-out to the King of all wines, my personal #1 favorite: Champagne. They are all fantastic, start at $55 and can range up as high as thousands of dollars per bottle. They are not be confused with other ‘Sparkling’ or ‘Bubbly wines’. While all Champagnes are sparkling, not all sparkling wines are Champagnes. A true Champagne must come from the Champagne region of France. A true Champagne is made from only the best grapes, can be made from only Chardonnay, Pinot Noir & Pinot Meunier Grapes, and is made using a very timeconsuming, painstaking method. Now for the turkey: The perfect turkey should be tender, flavourful, and juicy. We have all experienced eating a dry, hard to swallow turkey. To avoid this, try the following; To prep your turkey for cooking, using your hand separate the skin from the meat around the breasts. Insert 1 Tablespoon of butter into each side. This creates the “Butterball Effect’; For the first 2 hours of cooking, roast the

turkey breast side down. Then turn breast side up for the remainder of the cooking time; Cook it low & slow. Never higher than 325f. The cooking time will vary depending on the size of the bird. The turkey is done when the thickest part of the leg meat reads 170F. Remove the turkey, tent it with tinfoil and let it rest at least 20 mins prior to carving. FROM OUR READERS User Submission - HOLIDAY TRADITIONS Our family has had an outdoor holiday tradition that switches up every year. Originally it started when my husband thought he’d give me a little pre-Christmas Day prep time by taking our children out to the woods for breakfast over a fire on Christmas Eve morning. They’d pack up eggs and bacon, beans and fried potatoes, with juice and the coffee perk and off they’d go for a trek to a new place every year. We live in the country so any place is fair
game: top of a mountain, along a stream bed, in the deep woods, somewhere on our own property or not. But after just that first year, I decided I wanted to go with them. So for over two decades, we’ve added neighbours, nieces and nephews, a young dating couple who were under our wing at the time. My oldest daughter has since built her own family and it includes all of them, of course, but on various years, it’s
included her friends and extended family from as far away as Oregon and California. It’s still breakfast food but the menu changes with our visitors’ choices (such as biscuits and gravy for our southern guests) and could now extend beyond lunch time, depending on who’s coming and from how far away. Of course, now it takes up more time rather than saving me time but it’s totally worth it. Submitted by Joan Graham. 0050

Mix these ingredients & form into balls then put in ‘fridge to chill. Melt 6oz.pkg chocolate chips & 2 tbsp parowax until thin. You may need to add more parowax. FAMILY MATTERS HOLIDAY TABLE MANNERS Teaching your children to be respectful and considerate during mealtimes, whether it’s at home, restaurants or at friends’ houses will be important this holiday season. Most children should have a basic comprehension of table etiquette and all it takes is a little repetition and practice. Let’s go through the basics that can be applied at every meal, anytime, anywhere. Clean Hands and Bye Bye Elbows – Get your children in the habit of washing up before dinner and coming to the table with clean hands. Additionally, remind your kiddos to keep those pesky little elbows (and any other body parts), off the table. Please and Thank You – Teach your kiddos the importance of using please and thank you when at the table. These simple manners can be used when asking to pass food or to show appreciation for the meal. Wait – Children should be taught to wait until everyone is seated at the table and food served before they start eating. Patience is a virtue.
Utensils – Children should get into the habit of using the appropriate utensils for their food and avoid using their hands. Unless, of course it’s pizza or other finger friendly foods. Chewing – Children should always chew with their mouths closed and never speak with food in their mouths. Give friendly reminders to your kids to hold on to their thought until their food has been swallowed. Yucky Foods – If you have picky eaters, no doubt you’ve heard the phrase “yuck!” Teach your kiddos to use “no thank you” and why it’s not appropriate to make negative comments about the food in front of them. Avoid Playing with Food – As fun as it may be, slurping soup and shoveling large amounts of food into the mouth is unacceptable. Remind your kids that small bites are always better than big ones and noises like burping are a no-no. No Electronics – Children should know there is a time and a place for electronics
and the table is not one of them. Excuse Yourself – Children should always ask to be excused from the table once they have finished eating or need to use the restroom. Clearing Your Plate – As part of their mealtime routine, kids should clear their own plates. Children should have the responsibility of taking their plates to the kitchen sink and offer to help clear the rest of dishes. This holiday season enjoy the parenting journey, time with family and friends – Season’s Greetings! 0006

ASK MARY HOW CAN I GET THROUGH IT Question: It’s just me and the kids this Christmas and I don’t know how I’m going to get through it without breaking down. I would appreciate any advice you can give me. Answer: Going it alone can be tough at this time of the year. It’s crazy to pretend that everything's the same when it’s not. Here are some tips to help you and your children survive the season without your loved one. Include children in any discussion about the holidays. It is a time of great insecurity for them and they need the security and support of the family. Let them know in advance that Christmas is still going to be celebrated and consult them before making major changes. Get them involved about an appropriate gift or donation in memory of a loved one. Make them part of the process. They may also like the idea of a special candle that would burn in memory of the one who has died. Let them buy it! Give the children a break from
the family. If they want to spend part of their Christmas holidays with their friends, let them. Encourage children to talk about the one who has died. This can be a painful experience, but it can prove helpful in allowing them to express their feelings. Organize a simple treasure hunt with clues that eventually lead to a small gift hidden in the house. Make clues fun and simple, according to each child’s age and ability. Don’t try to keep everything the same. It isn’t and as sad as that fact is, it still has to be acknowledged. Evaluate family traditions and discuss with the children what traditions they want to keep and what they want to change. Remember the spiritual side of Christmas. Most churches offer a variety of social events for families during the holidays. Get in the Spirit. If you can, go to their school Christmas programs and reread some of the great Christmas stories. Spend some time watching Christmas movies,
especially the comedies. Go for a drive and admire the Christmas decorations. If you are facing Christmas alone for the first time, I encourage you to reach out to someone you trust and share your feelings with them. Please email your questions to: mary@ thesisterhoodofwidows.com. Merry Christmas from my home to yours and I hope you find peace and joy with family and friends. 0016

LIFE BALANCE LET’S HYGGE We were silent, tired, and happy, and it was pure hygge. - Meik Wiking. With winter fast approaching, some may be gearing up for the holiday season, while others may be starting to feel the effects of the short, cold days and the long, dark nights. Winter blues, also known as the seasonal affective disorder (SAD), affects the mood of people who generally have a stable mental health for most of the year, yet exhibit depressive symptoms at the same time each year, most commonly in the winter. Some might feel the effects of the winter blues more than others. Whether or not you suffer from the winter blues, one thing is sure, everyone could use a little pickme-up to help them get through the long winter months. The Danes use a concept known as hygge (pronounced hoo-guh) to help them get through their long, harsh winters. Hygge, loosely translated, means coziness.
To be more precise, hygge implies a psychological state of coziness. The true, subtle meaning of this concept can get lost in translation, however. In North America, the concept of hygge has been used as a selling point in hopes of selling anything that’s fuzzy, furry or warm. Hygge, however, is not something that one can necessarily buy. It is rather an experience that is created within yourself. This experience requires a feeling of peace, where preoccupations, stresses, and other unpleasant sensations are momentarily absent. This doesn’t mean that you can’t buy things to help you attain the feeling of hygge. For example, if buying your favourite hot beverage and sitting in front of your fireplace gives you that cozy and peaceful experience, than hygge has been attained. The hot beverage alone will not necessarily get you there, however.
Hygge is most commonly attained while surrounded by those that we hold near and dear to our hearts. Instead of trying to fabricate a cozy experience with material goods, particularly during the holiday season, be mindful of your surroundings and of those around you. Put your phone down and be present. Take in the sights, sounds and smells. Your mental health will thank you. 0040

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY In 1946, John Peters Humphrey, "Child of Hampton, Citizen of the World" became the first director of the Human Rights Division at the newly formed United Nations. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, asked Humphrey to write the preliminary draft of a Bill of Rights. With few changes, Humphrey's draft document was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948, as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Celebrations of human rights take place around the world annually on this day. 2008 was the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Credo Project, a memorial to John Humphrey, was unveiled on the historic courthouse lawn to celebrate the anniversary and commemorate his dedication and contributions to the world of human rights. The Credo memorial was the brainchild of John Murphy, a very active member of the Hampton John Peters Humphrey Foundation, and John and Kathy Hooper of Hooper Studios. Funding was provided by Hampton citizens, local and national businesses and municipal, provincial and federal governments for this muchloved memorial. Hooper Studios, with sculptor Darren Byers, artists Kathy and Sue Hooper and stonemason Ludwig Hartmann produced the memorial, under the project management of architect and planner Larry Stewart. 2018 will be the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Be sure to watch news releases for the Foundation's exciting plans to celebrate this anniversary. Although as an adult he lived in Montreal, John Peters Humphrey wrote in his diary, "...and when I dream (no matter what about) the background is always Hampton." 4793

PLAYGROUND DONATION
Kristy Waalderbos, co-founder of 100 Women Who Care of Kings County; Stephen Bean, Crosswinds and Sally Kierstead, founder of 100 Women Who Care of Kings County
On Tuesday, December 5 members of 100 Women Who Care of Kings County met at the Catholic Church Hall in Sussex to listen to three wonderful organizations that provide support to so many in Kings County. The Sussex Pregnancy Care Centre was represented by Tanya McRae, who spoke on the various programs the Centre provides; Stephen Bean talked to us about all the good things happening at Crosswinds Centre and Lois King, from the Sussex Sharing Club, enlightened us on the many needs their Club strives to meet. Although all of these groups are very deserving,we can only choose one
and the members voted through secret ballots and chose to give our collective donation of $7,000 to Crosswinds. Our next meeting will be held in Hampton in March, with date and location to be announced at a later time. We know hard times have hit Kings County in the past year and our membership has not been immune to that. It is with sadness that the family of Retired Corporal Patrick James Cole, age 58 announces his death which occurred on Monday, November 20, 2017 at his residence in Nauwigewauk, NB. Pat was born in Ottawa, ON, on March 17, 1959, is the husband of Bernise (Savoy) Cole and a son of the late Ronald and Claudette (Richard) Cole. Pat was first and foremost a family man. He and Bernise enjoyed regular visits to their trailer on the Tabusintac River, where there were always lots of family and friends around. He took great pride in his daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren and happily shared their accomplishments with anyone who stopped in at the house in Nauwigewauk. A 35-year veteran of the RCMP, Pat was a dedicated community police officer, achieving the rank of Corporal. He spent his entire career with J Division in New Brunswick, with postings in Bathurst, Jacquet River, Saint John and Fredericton. Pat served his last 10 years with the Hampton Detachment, where he became a fixture in the community. At the time of his retirement, Pat was Acting Sergeant, in charge of the detachment. As a member of the Hampton Canada Day Committee, Pat initiated and personally organized the annual Bike Rodeo. He continued with this activity in retirement and took on additional volunteer roles, as a member of the Hampton Community Club, The Nauwigewauk Community Club and
the Town of Hampton Leisure Services Advisory Committee. For the past couple of years, Pat was never far from his Chinese Crested sidekick, Mya, who would accompany him on his daily trips to Robin’s for a tea. As a true champion of the "support local" movement, Pat was extremely proud of his adopted home community and promoted the Hampton region at every opportunity. Pat is survived by his wife Bernise; daughters Jennifer Cole of Nauwigewauk, NB, Allison (Ricky) Robertson of Tabusintac, NB; grandchildren Kurtis Cole, Tyler Stewart, Lola Robertson (and Lola’s sister Gigi Robertson coming soon); greatgrandchildren Kash Stewart, Karter Stewart; sisters Rhonda (George) Miles, Roxanne (Michael) Nidd, Leslie Cole (Jim); several brothers-in-law, sisters-inlaw, nieces, nephews, extended family and his Chinese Crested sidekick, Mya. Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid’s Funeral Home, Hampton, where visitation was held on Sunday, November 26 from 1:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. The funeral service, celebrated by Father Kevin Barry was held on Monday, November 27 at 11:00am from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Hampton. Music was provided by the music ministry of the church. Readings were done by Manon MacKenzie and Eric Vailloncourt. Prayers of the faithful were done by Janice Bates. Memories were presented by family friend Brian Fowler. The song “Stand By Me” was performed by Jessica MacLean and Pete Belliveau. RCMP members, many of whom were close friends with Pat, formed an honour guard. Interment will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Pat may be made to Hampton PRO Kids or to the memorial of the donor’s choice. Personal condolences to the family and donations may be 0007 made through ReidsFH.com.
LIVE WELL
AS CHRISTMAS APPROACHES
Greeting cards and advertising would have us believe that Christmas is a time of joy and giving, warm and loving family gatherings, beautifully prepared and stress-free meals and the perfectly decorated home and Christmas tree. While this may be true for some who have the physical, emotional and financial resources to create these Hallmark moments, such is not the reality for many individuals and families living in our community. For them, Christmas is a time of aggravation, sadness, loneliness, depression and desperation. Mental illness and financial instability are two realities many New Brunswickers face. As many of you know, New Brunswick’s child poverty rate is one of the worst and most striking in the Nation, with one out of every five children living in poverty. Moreover, in the 2017 report card on The Face of Child Poverty in New Brunswick, prepared by the Human Development Council, almost 50% of children in single parent families in New Brunswick are living below the poverty
line. Poverty, as defined by the article, is the condition of a person who lacks the resources, means, opportunities, and power necessary to acquire and maintain economic self-sufficiency or to integrate into and participate in society. With these statistics in mind, why not use Christmas as an opportunity to incorporate community into your holiday traditions? Christmas presents an opportunity to sit down as a family or amongst friends and discuss ways to pay it forward. ‘Tis the season to reflect on how we, as a community, can support those struggling to make ends meet. Incorporating community involvement into your family’s holiday traditions is a wonderful way to teach children that the most valuable gift there is… is the gift of time and compassion. Whether it’s volunteering at a local soup kitchen, joining a toy drive, visiting a senior’s home, making a care kit for the homeless with items like socks, deodorant, mittens and snacks - these simple gestures can make the world of difference to someone
whose relationship with the holidays is tenuous at best. As Mark Twain once said, To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with. As the Holiday season approaches, please take the time to reflect on this past year. What made you happy? What brought you joy? Ask your children and friends, what filled their hearts this past year? Why are they grateful? And perhaps, the most important question to ask is: how can we ensure that others feel that same love and joy? There are many volunteer opportunities available on the Saint John Volunteer Centre website. 0008
