The Hampton Herald

I’ve talked a lot about my pregnancy over the past little while. I suppose it’s only natural considering one has a tendency to write what they know. What many don’t know is that I consider this to be my one true miracle. I was diagnosed with a thyroid condition in my teens and over the course of treatment was told I would not have children. I was young and had no desire for babies at the time, so the idea of not being able to carry a child did not concern me. Looking back, I may have misunderstood the actual “inability” to bear children as there was very little discussion regarding this “side effect” of treatment. I went through my twenties blithely planning on adoption; I had my plans for a career and figured I would deal with the family matter later. Then I met Kevin. We were together for a matter of days when I realized what we had was “the real deal”. Within six weeks we had met the other’s family, and that family was hinting at marriage. And then I got scared. I knew Kevin wanted a family and despite assuring me that he was okay with adoption, I felt strongly that I would be doing him a disservice. So I ran. Thank heavens that Kevin is an understanding and patient man. He waited me out… for over two years. When I finally came around, the idea of not being able to give him a baby continued to bother me, so I decided to check with the doctor for confirmation. Imagine my surprise when I learned a baby was possible, if a little more difficult. Suddenly, I had baby fever! We were so excited at the mere prospect of a family. Like any young couple we started planning, hoping and dreaming.

SALES

Then, in 2014, we had our dreams fulfilled, before being dashed by not one but two failed pregnancies. The concept of miscarriage is a strange thing. It is such a small, insignificant word to convey the overwhelming and devastating thoughts and feelings that suddenly arise. There is a sense of loss and isolation that descends, and persists, while outwardly, nothing has changed. For the better part of a year, I refused to even consider trying for another baby. Finally, we decided to let nature take her course and were ultimately rewarded. We learned we were expecting in October, 2016, but waited to share the news until we were past the “danger zone”. With frequent checkups, multiple ultrasounds and an amazing medical support team we have been assured of a healthy pregnancy thus far. Baby Crealock is due this month and all signs point to delivery of a healthy little miracle. For all the people out there struggling with a similar loss, for anyone fighting to regain their equilibrium, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Talking and sharing your story can help; by acknowledging our loss to others, Kevin and I have been able to find love and support through our community and from each other. I hope by sharing our story it will help others find peace. 0001

BUDDING BLOOMIN’ ARTISTS The Bloomin’ Artists event will once again be held July 15th and 16th, at the Lighthouse River Centre. On Saturday the 15th from 11:00am2:00pm we invite young ones to express their artistic flair by working on an art project of their very own all under the guidance and supervision of H.A.L.L. (Hampton Alliance for Lifelong Learning). No registration is required and there is no cost. All supplies will be provided. Kids can drop in for the whole three hours or just a short time, and they can take their project home. It’s fun for them, and fun for us to see how creative little minds can be. Perhaps there’s a future Rembrandt out there! Let them create a work of art while you peruse the artwork created by well known local artists and available by silent auction. Rain or shine we look forward to seeing your young one there. For more information call Georgie Day at 8325881 or see us on facebook "Bloomin' Artists 2017". 4587

TALES FROM THE CAMERA BAG CREATIVE PESSIMISM Are you one of those people who can admire an athletic performance and not see the years of sacrifice and training? Or, look into into an image and wonder what made that photographer “click”. How much research and planning and failed attempts did the photographer go through before they presented the image you see now. Creatives are constantly talking to themselves and saying “this is still not good enough”, call it self doubt or perhaps “creative pessimism”. It is often difficult for a creative to look at their own work and like it much, as they can see all the flaws in it. Compliments are difficult to accept for the same reason. We could stay in this negative space of self doubt and realize that this is a place you need to be, as we are on the road of creativity. Inspiration (breathing in) comes from this negative space. This occurs often when I am woodworking as well, the design is too light, too heavy, not

832-5541

balanced, the design will fail…. This very much the creative process, the creative pessimism is what generates a solution, “Plan B”. You will not likely be 100% satisfied, again, you see the flaws. At my camera club we have monthly photo critiques, where we present our images and a panel of good photographers will offer suggestion on how to turn you good image into a great image. Creative pessimism, or contentment, either word or phrase could be an inspiration killer. I will argue it is a matter of perspective. Like the club’s photo critiques, I keep an eye on my work and see where I can do better. Examine things like lighting, composition and feeling. Contentment, can be seen as ambivalent and that would be sad; rather there are times that I am content but still know I can do better. Is contentment killing your motivation? We need to feel the sting of self-doubt to engage our creative spirits, to try something completely new and experiment with our

tools and our imagination. It is within this self doubt and self criticism that our creative self lives. Our muse is pushing the bubble inside you, nudging you trying to get your attention, saying “that there is more here”; listen to me, don’t give up yet as you are just starting to see the inspiration. Wear a life preserver, once we dig deep and do some self examination that well of creativity will gush forth. 0032 Shoot-Print-Share. Edited for space. See full article at: ossekeag.ca.

PIGGS PEAK NEWS

Linda Mathunjwa. Since the Partnership between Hampton, NB and Piggs Peak, Swaziland was formed about 12 years ago we have supported a number of projects that are consistent with our mission. We've built a maize mill for grandmothers; a playground for children; a latrine for girls; and a library for students. All of these have been effective in different ways – engaging disenfranchised youth, advocating gender equality, and supporting the women who sustain and preserve the social fabric of the nation. But the one constant through

the years has been the payment of high school fees for students. Since we started, we have increased the number of students for whom we are paying fees every single year. We started with 18 students and this year we are paying for 150! Last week, we received an email from Linda Mathunjwa, a Swazi man who is helping us with our programs at the high schools in Piggs Peak. He writes “I have made my rounds of the two schools. I came across a number of problems, more of which are our kids losing parents, thus making their lives extremely difficult, since the breadwinners can be either an old gogo (grandmother) or mkhulu (grandfather), who get money through the elderly grant. So kids end up on food they get at school to survive. This shows how much paying for school is essential to the kids, as they get double benefits.” “We have success from kids still in school as well as those who have moved on. We have a boy who won himself a chance to appear on national television because of his great English. He will

represent the school at the English fair. Then we have the form 2 boy who has been getting a first since form 1, that shows how the program is helping. We also have kids in the university, who are not only getting their education, but using their allowance to feed their homes. Since Hampton is the father of their success, the power of helping is growing from within the people. The group is helping. I’m reminded of the story of the starfish over time as I see some developments from kids Hampton helps”. Linda reminds us of the realities of life in Swaziland –children being orphaned by parents dying, probably from AIDS, and being left in the care of elderly grandparents. Their challenges are great but the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is helping… just like the boy throwing the starfish into the ocean - one person at a time. If you are interested in becoming a Starfish sponsor, contact , Mark Bettle, at markbettle1@gmail.com or 832-0003. 0010

MURAL BY HES sTUDENTS Georgie Day, John Peters Humphrey Foundation representative, and Sarah Blanchard, Hampton Elementary School Principal, look on as Kathy

Georgie Day, Sarah Blanchard and Kathy Hooper Hooper describes the ideas and artistic impressions submitted by HES students for a mural focusing on Human Rights Articles 1-5. The mural depicts four human rights abuses in our Canadian history - Acadian expulsion, slavery, Japanese internment, and residential schools for First Nations children - as well as French, Japanese, and Mi’kmaq languages with English translation. The focus of the students’ learning and the resulting mural is to promote, maintain, and enhance an inclusive multicultural society. At the unveiling on June 23, the school acknowledged funding provided by Artists-in-Residency in partnership with NB Tourism, Heritage, and Culture; HES Home and School; and the John Peters Humphrey Foundation. Chosen from submissions by all the students, the mural has been named Freedom, Hope, and Love. 4600

Fruitful Vine, Splendour of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my Necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my mother. O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to secure my necessity (make request). There are none who can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times), O Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days, then publish it & it will be granted. L.P.
