The Hampton Herald

The leaves are changing colour, the geese are honking overhead and the morning dew is turning to morning frost. With the end of October comes my least favourite time of year, November. However you want to describe that period between Indian summer and the Christmas Season, I have never enjoyed the grey days of late fall and the month of November always seems so dreary. After a summer of nurturing my flower pots and gardens, wandering the trails and sipping a drink on the patio, I resent the shorter days and colder nights. I mourn the loss of my flowers and dread the day that I have to put my gardens to bed for the winter. This fall, after a spring and summer of getting ready for baby, and then recovering from surgery while learning how to take care of baby, my gardens really suffered and the task of prepping for winter seems even more daunting than usual. When I was finally able to spend a few uninterrupted minutes working in the garden rather than simply looking at it, I realized that Mother Nature had been hard at work reclaiming my garden plots and many of my perennials had been choked out by encroaching weeds. I finally made the difficult decision to approach gardening with a view towards the minimalistic for the 2018 season. Since early September I have been working away at removing the worst of the weeds, clearing new, smaller plots and transplanting a few

of my favourite flowers. With Emma as supervisor and Rufus looking on from the window sill, I built a rock wall and path around a raised garden bed before transplanting the Hostas and Astilbe that I brought from my mother’s gardens at our family home. Another garden was created for the Irises from my grandmother’s garden and Peonies from Kevin’s grandparents’ plot. I am now left with the task of filling in a few holes and spreading grass seed over large areas that at one time boasted Brown Eyed Susans, Irises and Peonies. I think Kevin is pleased at the prospect that mowing will be easier as he will have only two small gardens and the pad for our above ground pool to mow around rather than the extensive gardens I slaved over in the past. All in all, I am pleased with my new garden plots; next year, my gardens will be filled with flowers and family history, a combination that I believe will increase my enjoyment of the season. 0001

HAMPTON PRO KIDS UPDATE Fall is here and that means schools are open and the seasons are changing. Along with our calendar seasons moving to the back half of the year, our activity seasons are also transitioning. We thought this would be a good time to share some changes that have taken place with Hampton PRO Kids. For the past few years, we have partnered with

Canadian Tire Jumpstart to support children needing some assistance with sports registrations. As a funding partner, the Jumpstart program helped us meet the financial requirement to do what we do in the Greater Hampton area. Recently, Jumpstart has streamlined the way they support the kids in communities across the country. Using an online application process, they now deal directly with families to make sure kids are receiving the assistance they need. Anyone looking for information on how Jumpstart may be able to help can go to jumpstart.canadiantire.ca. So what does this mean for Hampton PRO Kids? We are alive and well! The Jumpstart program has a mandate to support physical activity programs. There are many children in our greater community who enjoy activities such as music lessons, theatre camps, art classes and other non sport interests. Our focus will continue to be ensuring less fortunate kids are not left out. Our application process hasn’t changed. Families can contact the Town of Hampton for information. We are able to continue the work we do through the generosity of our community partners who support

Hampton PRO Kids through their annual fundraisers. We also are grateful to residents who support these fundraising efforts, contribute privately or through memorial donations. It really does take a community, especially when it is for our kids. 4742

SELF ESTEEM MENTAL ILLNESS & ME Mental illness is often invisible. The first week of October was deemed Mental Illness Awareness week. As many of you know, one of my life goals is to eradicate the stigma that can accompany mental illness. When a person has to take medicine to regulate blood sugar, we get that. When a person has had a stroke and needs physical therapy to regain use of extremities, we understand that. However, some don't understand that our brain can fall ill as well. It may mean taking medicine for a chemical imbalance or going to talk therapy. How is that any different? Simply put, it isn't! I feel we have all come a long way in understanding mental illness but I also feel we can always learn more. I'd like to share with you some of the insights I have gained from being mentally ill... There is absolutely NO SHAME in having a mental illness. Having a mental illness can actually make you stronger. You feel things much more intensely

than the average person. You see things from a completely different perspective. You have thought after thought after thought (some positive, but most not). Having a mental illness makes you fabulously incredible! You wake up each morning, feeling dread and yet you go on. You conceal your pain, moment by moment. Throughout your day, you feel insecure yet you face others with a smile. At times, you are drowning in your own tears but you find the strength to resuscitate yourself. You don’t look sick but you feel it every single day. But you get up and get on with your day, just like everyone else. The average person can not do that! You have so many things to do in the run of your day and you do it all while fighting through the voices in your head that tell you can’t, you aren’t good enough, you suck, nobody likes you and on and on and on. You fight to live another day. Mental illness is different for everyone. In my experience, people are very

understanding and compassionate about mental illness for about three days, then they wonder why you’re not feeling better. Each of us have our struggles; whether they be physical, mental or spiritual. I believe we are more understanding of physical illness because we can see it. Someone broke their arm, they have a cast...that must've hurt or someone has had a heart attack and now has a scar down the center of their chest from open heart surgery. The scars from a mental illness may not show but they are there nonetheless. 0027 Edited for space, see full article ossekeag.ca.

TALES FROM THE CAMERA BAG CREATIVITY Are you creative? Most will compare themselves immediately to someone else and say no. The fact is most people are creative. To be creative you need two things, a thought and a way to turn that thought into an image. It is said that the most difficult part of any journey is the first step. The first step in this journey of creativity, moving from idea to an image, is to do something, anything that moves you towards your image. Set up a still life, call a friend or drive into the country or seaside, do something. Once you have done that, let the ideas percolate. Clear your mind and allow ideas to come. It is here that many will want to be original; good luck with that, as our creativity is born of a thousand parents. Every image, every painting, sculpture, poem has left a mark in our subconscious and it is from these sources of inspiration that much of creativity is born. Writer C.S. Lewis once said, “Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it.” Take your ideas (thoughts) and plant them like seeds and let them grow. One idea leading to another idea. It may sound like I am saying to copy is okay, well it is, sorta. When you see an image you like, look at it and ask yourself what it is that makes me like this image? Is it the mood, the

Frank Hayes

effects or lighting? Once you decided on what you appreciated about that image go out and make images of your own. If you like those images of light streaming through the tree, get up early and get to the woodlands and look for light. Make your image and then print it, because looking at your print is different than looking at it on a monitor. On a computer you images are backlit and often are quite bright. Printed images are reflected light and appear darker. With print in hand, you can critique your image and ask yourself how can I make it more like so and so’s. Ideas come from past experiences. The ideas you followed through on will become the starting point for another idea down the road of creativity. Shoot - Print - Share. 0032 Edited for space, see full article ossekeag.ca.

BETA SIGMA PHI CELEBRATES CANADA 150 On a beautiful sunset evening in late August sixty members of Beta Sigma Phi ladies’ sorority gathered at Meenan’s Cove Beach House, Quispamsis, for our annual “Beginning Day” celebration. We began with the singing of our National Anthem, wearing red and white and feeling very patriotic! This year we chose to celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday by increasing our knowledge of this diverse and wonderful country! Each of the four chapters involved researched and displayed a wealth of information about their chosen province or territory using a variety of maps, detailed posters, beautiful photos, interesting artefacts, presentations, travel information, videos and a skit! There was plenty of social time to mingle and catch up with each other while enjoying a delicious, homemade Canada Day Cake for dessert along with coffee and tea. King’s County Beta Sigma Phi continues to be a fun and active group of women who enjoy friendship and social activities while learning new things and contributing to our community. 4719

ANGELS REMEMBERED CAMPAIGN Hospice Sussex is gearing up for its annual Angels Remembered fundraising campaign to be held during the Christmas Season. The campaign will run from November 25th until December 16th at the Gateway Mall. This campaign gives people an opportunity to place an angel on the Hospice Christmas tree in memory of their loved ones. It is a great way to remember our loved ones at this special time of year and at the same time give support to programs and services for people and families touched by end-of-life issues. Hospice Sussex held its 15th Annual Harvest Dance and Silent Auction at the

Royal Canadian Legion in Sussex on October 14. Over $11,000 was raised. The Board of Directors and Volunteers would like to thank all those who supported this fundraiser. Hospice Sussex volunteers provide emotional, social, practical, spiritual, and grief support, as well as information and education to people and families in Sussex and the surrounding area who wish to have this type of support at a difficult time in their lives. For more information, visit our web site at hospicesussex.ca, email at hospicesx@nb.aibn.com or call 432-5001. 4750

Feb 6 1988 ~ Oct 19 2005 Not a day do I forget you In my heart you’re always near All I have are memories Of the days when you were here No matter what I do I always have a moment To stop and think of you Though your smile is gone forever And your hand I cannot touch Still I have so many memories Of the one I loved so much Like falling leaves the years go by But precious memories never die You live with us in memory still Not just today, but always Remembering is easy We do it every day Missing you is something That will never go away

Up upon our mountain Where the wild roses grow Lies the one I love so much And lost twelve years ago No farewells were spoken No time to say good bye God called your name so gently That only you could hear No one heard the footsteps Of the Angels drawing near October winds blow cold Your secret still untold I believe in God’s “Big Plan” But I still don’t understand Yet I have to accept The choice you made that day. Now I have a picture perfect face That looks at me and takes your place Everyday my broken heart remembers Thanks for the memories I still miss you. RIP A.J.

Golden leaves are falling From the trees in our backyard Another year has come and gone But the emptiness you left behind Still hurts and we miss you Today the sun shines down On a grave not far from here Lies the one I could not save You were always loved so dear Our thoughts are always with you Our someone oh so special Who can never be replaced Gone in just a heartbeat Now memories take your place Never forgotten Death is a pain that never heals Love is a memory no one can steal The footprints of your life Are etched upon our souls

Love Always and Forever

For several years, Leo worked at The Saint John Shipbuilding and Dry Dock in the Crane Dept., while also operating a Produce and Slaughter business at his own farm, in Hampton. Leo was a great gardener of vegetables and flowers and had a special way with animals. He was a hard worker and was always ready to lend a hand to others and help anyone in need. He provided a home for four children, in the earlier days in PE. Leo enjoyed hunting, gardening, and tending to his animals. Leo always thought the world of his children and when they were growing up, he prepared and maintained a skating rink and swimming pool for them and the neighbourhood children, on the Hall Road in Hampton. Leo had a special relationship with his Mother and loved his Father dearly. Leo was a friend to many and will be greatly missed.

TENDING TO MY PATCH GETTING YOUR GARDEN READY FOR WINTER As the cool weather sets in and the plants in our gardens fade, it’s time to think about preparing the garden for winter. Take a few extra hours now, and in April and May when the melting snow reveals beds that are ready for planting and spring bulbs popping out of the ground you’ll thank yourself. Here are a few things for your close-to-open fall checklist: Water: Give all of your plants a good drink, especially your trees. Their roots need plenty of moisture to make it through the upcoming months. Going into the winter well hydrated will help keep your plants thriving. Clear Debris: Remove spent plant material from the garden. Dead plants, old fruit and vegetables and any diseased plants should be removed from the garden beds and disposed of. Make sure you clean your raised beds and garden rows of all weeds – don’t let them overwinter

and go to seed. After the first frost, dig up dahlias, cannas, gladioli, and similar non-hardy bulbs for winter storage. Amend Your Soil: Get the ground ready for next year's beds by working the soil and adding compost and other implements for a healthier soil in the spring. Plant Fall Annuals and Remove Spent Annuals: Remember to empty containers of annuals and growing medium and put in storage. Early fall planting gives new plants enough time to get their roots established before winter. Buy and plant springflowering bulbs like tulips and daffodil. Feed the Birds: Don't forget your feathered friends; their food supply is not as plentiful in autumn. Dried flower heads with seeds can offer a nutritious food source. Dried plant parts, stems and grasses are excellent nesting materials for birds in the spring. Just remember that all clean-up needs to take place early in the spring, so as not to interfere with your plants new spring growth. Divide and Cut Back Perennials: While you're digging them up to divide and transplant them, try rearranging plants.

T E N D E R 26

The Hampton Herald

If you have planned your garden well, you will have late blooming perennial flowers such as sedums, asters, mums, and ornamental grasses to enjoy. Rake and Mulch: Left unattended, fallen tree leaves may suffocate your lawn. Shred them and make great mulch. If any disease is apparent at clean up do not put in compost pile. Put in bags and destroy. Clean all tools and wash hands before moving to another area. Get outside and enjoy the last days of great fall temperatures and shorter sunny days. 0034 Edited for space, see full article ossekeag.ca
