The Hampton Herald

Kevin and I are so excited to welcome our daughter, Emma Jayne Crealock, to the world! Emma was due July 15, 2017, but I expected she would be late as that seems to be the trend in my family. Image my surprise when I woke up at around 2:30am on July 16 with labour pains! After a long day and night of no progress, Emma was born July 17, 2017 at 4:01am by emergency C-section, weighing in at 5 lbs, 15 oz. She was so tiny, just a perfect little one arm bundle of joy. Despite the difficulties of the previous 24 hours, the moment I saw that little face everything else just faded away. I thought I was in love with my baby before… nothing prepares you for the moment when you finally meet. As any other parent can attest to, love at first sight does not begin to describe the enormity of the feelings that rush through you when your baby arrives. After spending four days in the hospital where help was just a second away, bringing baby home was a whole new experience… I don’t think the drive from Saint John ever seemed so long or dangerous. We did well though, only pulling over once to check on our precious bundle in the back seat. (I am especially proud of the fact that I only snapped at the other drivers on the road a couple of times. Kevin often laughs at my backseat-driver-road-rage.) Once Emma was tucked into her own little bassinet, Kevin settled me on the couch with strict instructions to rest. Fortunately, I had no difficulty (that night) in taking it easy as I was experiencing a whole new level of exhaustion. I wasn’t good for much more than staring at the bassinet and wondering at the fact that I was suddenly a mother. It hadn’t really sunk in until that moment when I was alone with this tiny little life for which I was now responsible. Now six weeks later, despite the sleepless nights and days where I could break down in tears because I’ve tried everything but still can’t figure out why Emma is upset, Kevin and I

still stare at our baby girl and marvel at the fact that we have been blessed with such a perfect little princess to complete our lives. He often looks and me and asks “are you sure she’s ours”, or, my personal favourite, “how did we get so lucky”….we are both in awe of the fact that we created such a sweet miracle! Kevin and I want to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Labour and Delivery Department, NICU and Maternity Ward at the Saint John Regional Hospital. To Dr. Becky and Dr. Satya, thank you for bringing Emma into this world! (I have it on good authority that I have one of the best looking C-section scars out there, so thank you as well for your impeccable stitch work). To Alana, Rachel, Lynn, Jennifer and the rest of the staff on the labour and delivery ward, thank you for answering all of our questions and for ensuring we were comfortable every step of the way. It meant a lot to me that regardless of how lost or out of control I was feeling, the ladies on the night shift, despite being runoff-their-feet busy, always had the time for a kind word, or joke. To the staff on the maternity ward and in the NICU, thank you for the care and advice, the help and support and most of all for being a part of the most incredible journey Kevin and I have taken together thus far. Until next time, thank you for all you do! 0001

HAMPTON 5-MILER This year’s Hampton 5-Miler road running race, which is organized by the Hampton River Runners, will take place on Sunday, September 10. This is the 17th running of the 5-Miler which is regarded by the running community as one of the premier running events in Atlantic Canada, with several mentions over the years in the Canadian Running magazine. The Hampton 5-Miler is actually three events - not just one. At 9:00am, there is a Kids’ Kilometre Fun Run for children 12 years old and younger, and 9:55am is the start time for the Three-for-Me 3km Run for youth 16 years old and younger. All of the events begin at Hampton High School. Kids’ k and 3k participants receive a T-shirt, a running bib and a Subway coupon. And they are invited to the free light lunch that takes place after the 5 -Miler. The 5-Miler begins at 10:00am. For more info, check out the hamptonriverrunners.ca website. Register online at runningroom.com or raceroster. com. Despite the low registration fee and thanks to the generosity of many private and corporate sponsors (check the back of the T-shirt!), the event has over the years raised in excess of $75000, all of which has been returned to the Hampton community to promote sports and fitness.... for such things as school sports uniforms, an elementary school climbing wall, fitness classes for seniors, and physical ed and sports equipment for local schools. See you on the first Sunday morning after Labour Day!! 4648

SELF ESTEEM LET GO & MOVE ON Our lives are ever-changing. Just because something was right for us in the past, doesn't mean it still is. This could be a relationship, a job, a home, a habit, etc. At some point, we realize there are deliberate changes we must make to keep up with the changes around us and/or within us. Our lifestyle may no longer fit with the life we are living. The specific people and routines we've known forever, no longer align with our values. It's time for a change, it may even be time to let go. To let go of something is to release the pain and hurt of things you can not change. It can be difficult to let go but not impossible. When we refuse to let go of resentment, anger and frustration it consumes us. We most likely deserve to be angry for all 'they' did to us. However, holding on to bitterness and resentment does us more harm than the original incident. When we refuse to let go, we are the only one hurting. To let go

does not mean you condone another's behavior or even forget. It simply means that you choose to release the negativity of your past. Use your past for you, not against you. You are who you are, partly because of your past. Own that! Let go of what hurt you but remember what it has taught you. Each one of us has numerous opportunities to learn lessons. When we learn one, we move on to the next. Every once in awhile, our learning process can be slow. That is okay, as long as we eventually learn what has been taught. Remember, you did your best with the knowledge and understanding you had. As we learn better, we will do better. Moving on is the natural result of letting go. You must truly let go before you can move on. As a child, my mom would ask me to sweep the kitchen floor. I would do a beautiful job but instead of grabbing the dust pan, I would sweep the dirt under a rug by the door. One

day as my mom went to open the door, it simply wouldn't....hmm mph....turned out the dirt I swept under the rug had accumulated and hindered the door opening process. Much like sweeping that dirt under the rug, when we do not truly deal with our own 'dirt', it makes it difficult to open new doors to a better life. Letting go is the answer to almost everything. And moving on is the reward. 0027

TALES FROM THE CAMERA BAG ANNUAL ART SHOW I am a lucky man to have such good friends around me. Last year I was humbled when a friend asked if I would submit some images for the annual Cathedral Art Show fundraiser. However, the drama starts when you begin to go through your images, and they are all junk! Yikes! A moment ago they were all masterpieces and now utter rubbish. Again this year I was asked if I could bring some more pieces of my work. Of course I said yes, as last year was a surprising success as I sold all three within hours. So I ask some photography friends about a few images I have selected and we critique the quality of the image and its saleability. But, choosing three images is difficult. I no longer think of them as rubbish but I do wonder about what would really sell. I have my friend John, print my work onto to canvas as this seems to me a better fit amongst the others oils, water

colours and mix mediums that will be present. As a woodworker, I had a piece in St. Andrews and when it first went on display there was a lot of interest. But interest faded quickly as the market seemed to move from wood and sculptures to watercolours. Last year flowers, boats and dories seemed to garner a lot of attention. With this kind of fickle market it is difficult to decide on what to have printed. I rationalized that if whatever I select does not sell then I will be happy to hang them on my walls. Although that would be a bummer for the Cathedral. How this works is, an artist is asked to submit work to display and keeping in mind that a percentage will go to the Saint John Cathedral building fund. Last year was wonderful, all the salons and rooms were full with nicely displayed art and monies were raised for the building fund. I decided on local scenes; one of fisher's

checking their traps in St. Martin’s but with an unusual point of view; one of Swallowtail Lighthouse, but where the lighthouse plays a minor part in the image and lastly a landscape /seascape of an old mill in Quebec. The art show happens, October 27-29 at the Saint John Cathedral on Waterloo St. Come early to get first dibs on some wonderful art. Not only will you be beautifying your home but you will helping a good cause. Shoot - Print Share. 0032

TENDING TO MY PATCH FALL PLANTING - BULBS If you think that autumn’s the time to stop gardening, think again! Fall gardening time is here, and it’s bulb-planting time! Ideally, plant your bulbs soon after you purchase them, and before the ground freezes. Check the hardiness zones if you want to treat as a perennial bulb. How to Plant Bulbs: Select a site with lots of sun and well-drained soil. Work a few inches of compost in the soil. Don’t want to bend to plant - try using a long handled bulb planter or a hand held type to plant individually; Plant bulbs generously in case some do not sprout. And plant them in random order and spacing for a more natural appearance. If you love drifts of spring color, be prepared to buy and plant a large quantity of bulbs!; Plant bulbs in clusters. Clusters give a concentration of color for greatest impact; Plant low bulbs in front of high. This is a good general rule for bulbs that bloom at the same time, however for example if the low growing

bulbs bloom early and the tall bulbs bloom late, plant the tall in front. Their display will camouflage the dying foliage of the smaller bulbs!; Try a doubledecker effect. You can plant small bulbs in a layer right on top of large bulbs. If you plant bulbs that flower in the same period you can create an interesting double-decker effect; Stagger by Bloom Times - by planting mid and late-season bloomers together, you will get a whole season of color! Many bulb companies have taken the guess work out of bloom times by offering a variety of bulbs in a package together to give up to 60 days of color. The general rule of thumb for planting spring bulbs is to plant two to three times as deep as the bulbs are tall. After hole is dug, apply fertilizer (in the hole) such as bone meal. Put bulb in and cover. Water well after planting. If you choose to mulch apply now to keep the weeds down and hold in moisture.

Do you have deer, moles or squirrels? Consider planting your bulbs in a “cage” fashioned with chicken wire, or try planting some rodent-proof bulbs such as hyacinths. FYI - most hyacinth bulbs are treated and some people can get an allergic reaction if they come in contact with the bulb. Fall Bulb planting is limited only by your imagination. Your fall work of planting bulbs can yield months of colorful excitement in your yard or garden next spring. 0034

Mural

REMEMBRANCE DAY MURAL This summer we were pleased to brighten the Hampton landscape by creating a mural with our two families. After completing a mural last summer on Waterloo street in Saint John, we thought we would like to paint one in our home town of Hampton. We felt as though our community and our children would benefit from this project because it would fill up up a drab space and our children

Young Artists

would have a project that they would feel proud about, something big that they would see almost daily. As the painting faces the cenotaph we thought a field of poppies would be appropriate, and we also tried to mimic the shape of the hills around Hampton to give it a more personal feel. Each child painted at least one large poppy on their own, and they spent many afternoons working through all the steps required to make the mural as beautiful as it is. We signed our names on the bottom right corner so that for many years to come we can point to that spot and say, " I was part of this". Artists who helped with our mural are; Amber Young, Jessica Hickie, Emily Dee, William Dee, Evan Dee, Tyson Dee, Abigail Hicks, Judas Hicks, Callum Hicks, Leah Grenon and Adam Grenon. 4662

CEMETERY CLEAN-UP DAY The Hampton Rural Cemetery held a Clean-Up day and this young group from the Hampton Sea Cadets came to show their support. They are a great group of energetic, polite, young people. Thank you. 4669

DOLLARS & SENSE IS THAT FINANCIAL ADVICE COSTING YOU? “How are you paid?” can be one of the most uncomfortable questions to ask another person, but it’s important, especially when it comes to your financial advice. There has been a lot in the news about financial institutions ensuring that their disclosure regarding their investment fees become clearer and that clients are not being overcharged for their services. It is not just investments where you can potentially be charged fees, there can be fees on referrals to other services, brokerage fees, closing fees, hidden fees and consultant fees. Even non-profits charge fees for their services, it’s okay to ask. What you need is to know how do you determine what is reasonable? And how do you determine if the fee is appropriate? So many times, we have helped consumers that are paying fees for services they could have accessed at a lower cost, or directly from where

they were referred. It is fair to ask these questions too. If they are not charging a fee directly to you, how are they making their money? Every type of business has expenses that need to be covered, how are they making the money to do this? For non-profits, sometimes they have funding, grants or endowments they use to defer cost. In the for-profit industry, sometimes the fees are in the service and sometimes they are in the product. All in all, no matter the organization, they should be open in disclosing how they are paid. If the fees are in the product, ask how does that work? What is the industry standard? If you are not comfortable with the fees, or unsure of the cost there are resources to help you. Financial education is a good start, we offer tips and resources for a variety of financial decisions and needs to get you started. Most organizations that advise you on your finances will have an education component, whether

in information packets or sessions to attend. The more you know, the more you will secure in the decision you make. There are no quick solutions when it comes to your finances, sometimes ‘quick solutions’ have the highest cost. As the adage goes, ‘nothing in life is free.’ Be aware of the cost, be comfortable with what you are paying and shop around. 0005

HAMPTON’S PIGGS PEAK NEWS “New data from Swaziland provides some of the most convincing evidence yet that aggressively ramping up treatment for HIV/AIDS works on a population level to cut the rate of new infections. The kingdom has had one of the worst HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world, but since 2011, its massive scaleup of testing and treatment has slashed the rate of new infections by 44%.” This excerpt from a July 24 article in “Science” magazine is wonderful news! New information presented at the International AIDS Society’s conference shows Swaziland has made remarkable progress in combating the AIDS epidemic that has ravaged its people. This gives us hope that our neighbours there will one day emerge from under the cloud of death, poverty, and broken families that now shadows the country. We must remember though that, while new infections are down, there is still no cure for those currently infected. And there is no quick solution for the decimation of the country’s social fabric that AIDS has caused. But through the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership, we are helping to mend a broken society. Through our involvement,

we are slowly making improvements in the social framework of Piggs Peak. By paying high school fees in Piggs Peak (currently 75 females and 75 males), our Partnership is alleviating poverty; promoting human rights for everyone; supporting gender equality; and empowering women and girls. We have every reason to be optimistic about the future that we are helping to create in Swaziland. Dr. Beverly Bryde, Dean of Education at Cabrini University in Pennsylvania, recently wrote, “In Swaziland, the culture identifies women as less important than men. Access to education and knowledge of the global situation can help these women to demand more and be able to articulate their needs such as education. If women spend more time in school, they are more likely to climb out of this trap. Each year of secondary education… gives women in developing countries more of an opportunity have a successful life.” “The importance of education goes further than making people more educated and involved in the world around them. Women especially feel more empowered and ultimately have

a better chance at thriving if they are given the opportunity to stay in school.” In October, people in the Hampton area will have the opportunity to hear first-hand about the importance of an education in Swaziland. We will be hosting two young women from Piggs Peak, Esther Dlamini and Dolly Sihlongonyane, who will be speaking to a number of people and groups in Hampton about their experiences as young woman in Swaziland. The highlight of their visit will be a Women’s Dinner on Saturday, November 4. For more information, contact me, Mark Bettle, at markbettle1@ 0010 gmail.com or 832-0003.

ATLANTIC CANADA’S MOST COLOURFUL FESTIVAL IS ALWAYS HELD THE WEEKEND AFTER LABOUR DAY. ATTRACTING UP TO 35,000 VISITORS.

CHANNEL YOUR INNER CHILD….WITH BALLOONS! The sky is the limit; anything is possible for the spectacular sight that will soon grace the horizon. A shock wave of heat and colour, their flight brings nothing but wonder to the imaginations of all. Attracting people from all across the province to the town of Sussex for the acclaimed “Most colourful festival in Atlantic Canada.” - 2017 Fiesta Committee (Main Website), and based on the crowd of smiling and laughing faces, this is most certainly an understatement. These wondrous balloons stir our imaginations to the core, all we have to do is let our minds go and become immersed in the multiple storylines that correspond to each bright balloon which soars into the crimson sky. All one has to do is close their eyes and envision the individual paths that each will take. It starts with blue, then red, orange and every other colour of the rainbow, blending seamlessly with the landscape: Where will they end up? The blue balloon brings the sea to mind, with the white sand beaches and sparkling waves. The sea spray is visible below and the sea birds flutter beside the basket. On the beach below, there are families throwing Frisbees and locals sunbathing, the water is filled with surfers and swimmers. You swear that you see someone wave up at your balloon, you respond with a smile and a cheerful shout: Hello! When you remember that

the altitude prevents communication, you turn your attention to your surroundings: The cool breeze sends slight shivers down your spine, the sweater that you have on isn’t heavy enough, but you don’t care; all that matters is that up here, in this basket under this balloon of vivid blue, you are as free as the birds that fly alongside you. The sunset gleams over the crisp countryside. The cloudless sky, accompanied by the warm air, lends incredible beauty to the serenity of it all. Looking up, you can see the flame that provides the required lift for the big, orange balloon. A sleepy little village passes below and you wonder if the residents can see you. A baseball game is visible below and you wave to the fans in the stands, even if they can’t see you, it is an astonishing thought that your experience up here can be shared by all with a simple glance. Turning your attention forward, you see trucks gathering in the field ahead: time to land. The idea of leaving skies makes you wish that there could just one more minute left up here, with the breathtaking view. The gaps between the skyscrapers act as roadways through which you steer your fire engine red balloon. Not the easiest task, but it sure is fun, almost as if you are the police helicopter watching over the city streets. There is the coffee shop where the hipsters hangout, the courthouse

where the criminals are separated from the accused. The buildings give way and below your floating observatory is the park, with its ponds and trees and people. The city has never seemed so beautiful, a fact that has occurred to you through the magnificence of your hot air balloon. So where will your imagination take you? Over an ocean, across the countryside, or through a city? After all, that is the point of a festival such as the Balloon Fiesta. Forget the rides and the markets and the how-do-you-do’s, the Balloon Fiesta is the culmination of what your imagination can do. Bask in the glory of these magnificently colourful aircraft, and allow yourself to channel your inner child. It is the type of environment where one doesn’t question where their imagination goes, but lets it run free. The point is to admire the balloons and wonder where they might go, the possibilities are endless. When all is said and done, the Balloon Fiesta brings nothing but fun, so head out to Sussex and enjoy!

How can your community benefit you? Being part of a community gives you a sense of belonging, whether it is your neighborhood, work, social, sports or religious group. Twice each year, the Sussex Area Community Foundation (SACF) provides community grants to local groups. These grants are from a community fund which is made up of pooled community donations that are invested. Returns from this fund are given as grants such as the following: The Sussex Elementary School received a grant to purchase a greenhouse for the courtyard. Teachers and students will learn about growing their own plants and vegetables. The Greater Fundy Ground Search and Rescue team received a grant for a photo reconnaissance drone. The drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle that can be

invaluable in the rescue of lost or missing persons in a remote area. Although the drone does not replace searchers on the ground, it is an aid in accessing areas that are difficult to reach and provides timely data. Belleisle Regional High School purchased two outdoor basketball nets to replace unsafe existing nets with their grant. These nets are not only for students, but also for the community to enjoy. Fall Community Grant applications are due September 13 at 12:00noon. Details of the requirements and grant application can be found at sacfi.org/grants or by calling SACF at 433-6244. Since 2005 the Sussex Area Community Foundation has returned over $660,000 in grants and scholarships to the Sussex area. 4673

WELL RESTED A Fresh Start for Your Sleep Health! The summer is at an end and vacation is over. These crisp early mornings and turning leaves sometimes feel more like a fresh start even than New Year’s Day or spring. With the memories of the first day of school and brand new paper and pencils, many of us vow to make a fresh start by cleaning out our garages and heading back to the gym. How about making a fresh start with your health? A great place to start is with an assessment of your sleep! Grab a pen and answer the following questions: Do you snore? Are you tired in the day? Has anyone seen you gasp or snort in your sleep? Do you have high blood pressure? Are you overweight? Are you over 50? Do you have a thick neck? Are you male? How many times did you answer “YES?” You may be at risk for having Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Yes to 0 - 2 questions, Low Risk; Yes to 3 - 4 questions, Intermediate Risk; Yes to 5 - 8 questions, High Risk!

More and more people are being tested and diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. This is a condition where your throat repeated closes off on you when you are sleeping. The arousals from sleep to start breathing again cause daytime sleepiness and negative cardiovascular changes. There are dozens of studies that show the correlation between diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular problems. High blood pressure, diabetes, depression, chronic headaches and car accidents are just a few of negative outcomes from untreated sleep apnea. The gold standard treatment for Sleep Apnea is CPAP, Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. Air pressure is blown gently into the airway through a small mask on the face. This air holds the throat open so the person breathes at night the same as they do during the day, just like they are supposed to. An added benefit; no more snoring! Equipment is becoming so small, quiet and

ATLANTIC SHOREBIRD SURVEY Calling All Nature Lovers! Did you know that shorebirds are among the best-travelled creatures on earth, travelling thousands of kilometres between their breeding grounds in the north and their wintering grounds in the south? Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) needs your help to better understand the amazing migratory birds that stop-over along our shores on the East Coast. The Atlantic Canada Shorebird Survey (ACSS) is a volunteerbased survey that relies on the skills, dedication and long-term support of bird watchers throughout Atlantic Canada. Volunteer bird watchers regularly head out to more than 100 sites to gather important information to help biologists as they work to conserve species that are experiencing declining populations. This vital information helps biologists estimate the population size of a variety of species, monitor trends and track stopover locations.

Shorebird So if you’re a beach bum, a bird nerd or are someone who simply loves the great outdoors, help conserve our shorebirds and monitor their activity by joining others in the Atlantic Canada Shorebird Survey. Find a survey spot in your area that interests you. ACSS sites can be beaches, tidal flats, salt marshes, freshwater marshes, and sometimes even fields and heathlands. Typically volunteers go out to their designated observation post just once every ten days to collect information

about the birds they see there. Here is what you’ll need when surveying shorebirds: Binoculars, pen and pencil, clipboard or field book, ACSS data sheets (provided), site map (provided), spotting scope (optional), enthusiasm (required). For more information about how you can help the Canadian Wildlife Service conserve migratory birds in Atlantic Canada, please contact Julie Paquet at julie.paquet2@canada.ca or 506-364-5037. 4653
