“MY TRACTOR”
With thousands of readers, there has to be at least two people who are interested in tractor articles. So I need just one person besides myself and we are good to go!! The workhorse of my small tractor fleet, is my second oldest, but at 32 years old, it is still going strong and is my go-to tractor for the heavy work. It’s the one that ventures off of the woods road to blaze new trails and to haul out wood. It is also the only tractor that has the space to carry the many items needed for the hard jobs. My chainsaw sits in a case out on one rear fender, while an axe sits inside the cabin beside my seat. Outside on the loader, I have a bracket to hold my peavey for moving logs or trees around if needed. Until I find a logging winch or wench, I have a 20 plus foot hunk of chain hanging off brackets on the other side of the loader. Also hanging off the loader are lopping shears for trimming branches (instead of using chainsaw), a two-ton manual winch for hauling me (hopefully) out of places I shouldn’t have been, and a shovel (for self burial if nothing else works)!! Inside the cab, I have a hard hat with face shield, that I should use but never do, two or three pairs of gloves, a small maul-like hammer (protection from coyotes and angry wife), numerous bolts and pins, tools and a fairly short eight foot chain, along with gas and chain oil for my chainsaw. The tractor started out life weighing a little over 4,000 lbs but now weighs somewhere in the vicinity of 120,000 lbs and can barely move (just kidding)!! It is amazing, when I think about it. With all of the problems in the world both near and far, why would I write about a tractor?? Well for one thing, tractors aren’t depressing!! One of the great things about our publications is that with possibly a rare exception, all of the news is positive. And believe me, that can be very hard to find today. While there is nothing wrong with getting the “real” news on life, a continuous barrage of bad news is depressing and so people begin to feel hopeless about the future and that there is nothing that can be done. Fortunately, our publications are just loaded with people and organizations being very busy trying to solve at least some of the world’s problems and believe me, that is a good thing. Cruise Fundraiser for A.E.D’s
In support of the purchase of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for Grand Bay Primary and Inglewood Elementary Schools a Voyager II River Boat Cruise will be held on Saturday, June 9th from 2:00-4:00pm. Leaving from the Saint John Marina (2050 Westfield Road, the Cruise will include musical entertainment by Mary-Beth Marks, cash bar and light refreshments. Tickets for this event are $35/each (kids 3 years and under $10). Please come out for a fun afternoon and support a worthwhile cause, as we team with the Heart and Stroke Foundation to raise funds to purchase AEDs for these two schools. Congenital heart defects affect one in every 100 children born and many of these defects go undetected until a life-threatening event occurs. Cherry Brook Zoo (CBZ) has two Siberian Tigers who are members of the international conservation program called Species Survival Program (SSP). The aim of SSP is to increase the captive populations and improve genetic diversity of Endangered Species. Your zoo has a long history of SSP work. Other zoo residents currently on SSP are all the monkeys and the snow leopard. Siberian Tigers, the largest of the big cats, are endangered due to loss of habitat, and prey plus poaching for the illegal black market industry that supplies Asian tradition medicine. Eight species of tigers once existed. Three species are now extinct and remembered in your zoo’s Vanished Kingdom Park. Tiger Pam is age 23 and Nyla is age six. Many visitors have asked about Pam and her current condition. The longest living tiger in a zoo was 25 years old. Pam obviously is showing her age. CBZ does not believe in euthanasia based simply on age. Pam is under veterinarian care. She has produced young and is a retired SSP tiger. Pam’s male offspring, Baikal, who grew up at your zoo is at the top of the SSP stud list for Siberian Tigers. He has gone on to produce his own offspring thus carrying on Pam’s bloodline. Pam will continue to be monitored regularly by our zoo veterinarian. The Zoo and its Miniature Golf course are open 10:00am to 8:00pm with last admission at 7:00pm. Canada Day on the Belleisle
Mark your calendar to celebrate Canada Day – on the Belleisle at Hatfield Point – for this year, a day early, on Saturday, June 30th. The day will begin with breakfast & yard sale (sponsored by the Outreach Pentecostal Church youth group) and the annual parade. Other events for the day include: children’s games, art, quilt & fancywork displays, carpentry competition, cake auction and musical entertainment. Chess Champ for NB
Sam Song, a student at Milledgeville North School, recently had the opportunity to represent NB at the Canadian Chess Challenge at Saint’s Mary’s University in Halifax. He played nine games and came in second place in the Grade 6 Competition. Winning is no surprise to Sam and his family. Last year he placed first, winning the gold medal at Canadian Chess Challenge. Sam and his family moved to Canada less than a year and a half ago. They immigrated from China in February of 2011. Sam’s mother, Yang Bai is a student in the Language Program at the Saint John Y. She travels with her son to various tournaments and often participates as referee. 605

MCCANN, M Clarice
The death of Clarice, wife of the late John Henry (Bill) McCann occurred at Rocmaura Nursing Home on May 5th, 2012. She was born on February 25th, 1917 to the late Michael and Agnes (Reid) Keenan in Fairville, where she lived her whole life before moving to Rocmaura. She was a lifelong member of Saint Rose of Lima Parish and was an active member of the Legion of Mary and the Catholic Women’s League. She is survived by her children Kathleen von Richter (Paul) of Hampton, Marian McCann of Bloomfield, Ronald McCann (Debra McFarlane), Margaret Mazerolle (Robert) and Mary Vitale (Bobby) all of Saint John; one sister Marjorie Owens of Richmond, BC; one sister-in-law Loy McCann, who was her roommate at Rocmaura and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Clarice was a former employee of Cash ‘N Carry and BettyBrite Cleaners. She loved knitting for others, reading, doing puzzles and especially spending time with her children, 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by her sisters Kathleen Dever, Verna Keenan and her brothers Ronald Keenan, Frances Vernon and Michael Roy in infancy. Mass of Christian Burial was held on May 10th, 2012 from Saint Rose of Lima Church. The main celebrant was Father Ralph McRae and also present were Father Mike LeBlanc, Father John Mooney, Father Don Breen and Father David Martin. The Music Ministry consisted of accompanist Mary Ann O’Hara, soloist Margie Mazerolle (daughter), Theresa Rogers and Mike Boyer. The CWL formed an honour guard. Readings were given by Marian McCann (daughter), Christina Fanelli (granddaughter) and Natasha Mazerolle (granddaughter-inlaw). Pallbearers included Adam Ferguson (grandson), Jeff Mazerolle (grandson), Andrew Mazerolle (grandson), Bob Mazerolle (son-in-law), Bob Vitale (son-in-law) and Robert Reid (cousin). Memorial donations were given to St. George’s Memorial Fund; Carleton-Kirk United Church; ALS Society of NB; Gideon Bibles; Rocmaura Foundation Inc (with one from the Management, Staff and Board of Directors of Rocmaura) and also from the Ding-a-Ling Bowling League; Divine Mercy Catholic School; Bruce Melanson Scholarship Fund; Romero House – Soup Kitchen; Heart and Stroke Foundation; Canadian Cancer Society; Dr. V A Snow Centre; Parkinson’s Society; Saint John Regional Hospital (with one from Horizon Health Network – Saint John zone); and Mind Care (with one from staff of 4D North). Spiritual donations were given as Mass Cards to Saint Rose Church (with one from the CWL) and Saint Matthew’s Church (with one from Saint Matthew’s Choir). Interment took place at Holy Cross Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Fallsview Family Centre. The family would like to thank all who helped us to celebrate Clarice’s life by your donations, your presence, your acts of kindness and your prayers. 723

As in any organization, staff is key. Recently, luncheon celebrations were held at both Kings Way Care Centre in Quispamsis and at Kennebec Manor in Saint John. Nutrition staff and volunteers did the Barbecuing – great way to kick off the summer season and spend some leisure time together – away from their daily rounds. At Kennebec Manor, long standing employee, Ken Herrell was acknowledged for 30 years of service. Ken was actually part of the building crew for the structure, helped build furniture and his Grandmother was one of the first residents. Talk about dedication! Tracy Scott at Kings Way read a heartfelt letter from a family member of a former resident – “I want to take the opportunity to write and tell you what wonderful people you are. TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY, THAT IS THE QUESTION?
Now that the risk of killing a frost is finally over, it’s likely that there will be a mad rush to the garden centers and the household budgets will again be in a perilous state. If you are fortunate enough to have a deer proof fence, the sky is the limit, if not, then it’s wise to pick as many deer proof items as possible. There are a number of interesting plants and bushes that seem to be either very low on our white tailed friend’s dietary list, or happily, off their list all together. For several years, despite the regular appearance of these beasties, I have grown the following with great success: Lavenders; Forsythia; bush and vine Honeysuckles; Epimedium, a low perennial with delightful pink, yellow or red delicate blooms, followed by heart shaped leaves that turn a beautiful deep red color as they mature; Deutzia, a shrub with delicate fragrant blossoms and pale green leaves; Fox Gloves; Burning Bush; Lady’s Mantle; Barberry; Caragana; Peonies; Hawthorns and assorted Clematis. So far the Wisteria has remained in tact however, now that it is trailing temptingly over the fence I am not sure of its future. No matter how firm I am in my resolve to abide by the “Don’t Feed the Deer”, concept, the fact remains that if we garden at all, we are providing food for them ... anyway, there are plants that are simply too beautiful to pass up and there is protection for them. It’s wise to keep these purchases within reasonable bounds, namely the numbers that one can easily spray on a regular basis. My dentist recently suggested that since deer avoid the Narcissus family, (Daffodils and the like), that a blend of the faded blooms with a few of the leaves might be a good base for the next miracle repellant. I shall have a go, since it is time to cut the blossoms down anyway, I shall mix in a little oil or beaten egg to help the mixture adhere to the leaves and ‘Hey Presto’, we might just strike gold; enough perhaps to pay for a really fancy filling!! While you are at it, cut down the entire blossom bearing stems from tulips and crocus, but compost them as they are the #1 favorite food. By taking off the spent blooms the plant then will put all its energies into strengthening the bulb, instead of working hard on producing a nice fat seed pod. The results will provide many more flowers next year. Happy gardening, even if it means scaling your diet to wieners and beans! 805

40 YEARS LATER
As odd it seems to me, it has been 40 years since my high school graduation. It does not seem possible, but a simple subtraction confirms the truth of it: 2012-1972 = 40 years! Yikes. What was happening way back then? Pierre Elliot Trudeau was prime minister, Richard Nixon was the president of the United States (Watergate was a couple of years down the road), and Richard Hatfield was premier of New Brunswick (and so was the Bricklin). A new house cost in the $25,000 - $30,000 range. Gas was 36 cents a gallon (which would be approximately 8 cents per liter except we weren’t using the metric system then). New Brunswick officially became Canada’s only bilingual province - and removed “The Picture Province” from our license plates. The number one movie of the year was The Godfather, the number one song was Don McLean’s American Pie and All in the Family was the number one TV show (yes, we did have television then). M.A.S.H. premiered in 1972. For sports fans, that was year Paul Henderson scored the “goal of the century” in the Canada vs Soviet Union hockey Summit series. It was also the year 11 Israeli athletes were killed in the Munich Summer Olympics terrorist attack. In the midst of all that, a grand total of 38 Grade 12 students at Hampton High School approached graduation. Amazingly when we sat down to plan a 40th reunion, with one or two exceptions we know where all 38 are today or can find out fairly easily. One of the benefits of a small community. So we will get together for an evening to catch up a little and brag about our grandkids and maybe rekindle some of that youthful energy and anticipation of what life had in store for us as we looked ahead at age 18.
