RAVINGS By Mike Hickey

“GREENHOUSE PROBLEMS If you recall, I recently wrote about how well our new house had worked out!! Despite that success, not all house issues have gone as well. I am talking about our greenhouse ... the one I purchased for the wife’s birthday nearly three years ago. I set it up in June (I think) and everything was grand until the following spring when a very major wind blew it all to pieces!! It took a week or two to track down and recover every piece. Some apparently had taken off to the northwest, while others were blown to the northeast. Undisturbed by minor setbacks, I decided that it might be better to move the location of the greenhouse from the wide open spaces to one sheltered by the garage. A few weeks later and we are up and operating once again!! That is until about two months ago when another nasty wind from the southwest, blew the front half of the structure to pieces!! Now in case you are wondering, I have investigated and found no reason to believe that shoddy workmanship is to blame. Sure there might have been a missing screw or bolt here and there but the base was still firmly anchored following both acts of destruction. It seems clear that simply doing another repair is unlikely to have long lasting results. My highly scientific guess, is that the polycarbonate panels sit in aluminum tracks and under high winds allow enough air to penetrate the interior to start setting up stresses. These stresses will pop open the roof vent and that allows even greater air flow and finally, destruction. So my plan now is to rebuild with a much stronger wooden frame and actually seal the panels with caulking to virtually eliminate air penetration. Now, all of this can be done for practically nothing ... assuming of course that the missus would be agreeable to receiving a special gift for her next birthday. It just seems downright proper that she get a portable sawmill for this coming birthday, so that I can repair her previous birthday present. I have even offered to help her get it set up!!! So anyone having a fairly basic portable mill for sale, let me know!! If there are two or more available, the missus will of course get to pick her preferred colour. 001

THE BIG ROTHESAY READ On Wednesday, April 3rd the top-secret book selection for year five of “The Big Rothesay Read” will be unveiled at Rothesay High School. The volunteer organizing committee responsible for The Big Rothesay Read has some exciting plans to promote The Read this year and are excited to get things rolling. The previous four book selections for The Big Rothesay Read have been: A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, by Ishmael Beah in 2009; The Book of Negroes, by Lawrence Hill, in 2010; Jerk, California by Jonathan Friesen, in 2011; and last year, The Book of (Even More) Awesome, by Neil Pasricha. Each selection has successfully fulfilled The Big Rothesay Read’s mission: to encourage literacy and inspire dialogue in the community and across generations through a shared reading experience. “There is a lot of thought that goes in to selecting the right book for our read,” says Mary Ann Gallagher. “It must appeal to and be relevant for all age groups, but also has to be appropriate for children as young as grade nine.” “Beyond that, we have to ensure the author is able to come – that is key.” “We’re very excited about this year’s title and author and the events we have planned to tie in with our book selection. We know it’ll be a huge hit.” The author will visit Rothesay on Tuesday, May 7th for two public talks and Q & A’s. Who will it be?? Find out on April 3rd! 250

Spring’s Cleaning

ROTHESAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS March Wellness Tip: The right drink for your child – every day children use up a lot of energy to learn at school, do sports, play with friends etc. They need to take in energy and keep hydrated throughout the day. Energy drinks might seem attractive to provide them with an extra boost; however these drinks are not recommended for children because they are extremely high in caffeine and sugar. The best drink choices for your child are water, milk or a glass of pure fruit juice so they can receive the energy they need. Playground update: The playground committee has been working very hard to secure funding and support for the playground renovation. Unfortunately we have reached a point that without parental involvement and support our project will not be completed. We have met with all levels of government and have been told that there is no funding at this time. Our current playground no longer meets safety standards and our children are being injured on a regular basis. Please contact rothesaycommunitypark@rogers. com to see how you can help. As a fundraiser for the playground – you can purchase a sterling silver fingerprint necklace for Saint John Wee Piggies & Paws and they will donate $10 from each sale to the playground. Contact Christina Crowdis at 216-7297 for more information. Students will have a chance to contribute during special days the last Friday of each month. Crazy Hair Day is March 22nd and we suggest that students make a small donation to the Playground Fund. We’re hoping to fill the water bottle in the lobby! Some RES dates to mark on your calendar: Friday, March 22nd – Movie Night, “HOP” at 6:30pm; Saturday, March 23rd – 8:30pm, Earth Hour, visit earthhour.org for more information; March 26-28th – Scholastic Spring Book Fair; March 27th – Student-Led Conferences (7:00pm); March 28th – Student-Led Conferences (8:3011:30am) – no classes for students; Friday, March 29th & Monday, April 1st – school holidays. 222

VALLEY LIFE By Rachel Wyatt

THE VALLEY’S “BARBER SHOP” GATHERING SPOT Every community has its areas where folks tend to congregate to discuss their week. The traditional and “stereotypical” version was, of course, the Salon and or Barbour shop for our grandparents generation. General stores and coffee shops have also long been places for catching up and chatting with your neighbor. While these are the spots you would think of, in the Valley, we have our own somewhat humorous way of doing things. Rather than congregating IN the coffee shop - it seems to be a Valley social custom to bring your coffee outside, lean on your car or motorcycle, and talk to your neighbor in the parking lot, enjoying the weather. Many would attribute this to it being a Maritime thing, but as I have travelled throughout most of the Maritimes and observed folks DO do this in other places (Cape Breton, Yarmouth, sometimes in Saint John etc) in no area have I seen it be a daily thing - same place, same time, same schedule - many laughs and smiles seen and heard across the paved social gathering place. Community quirks are what make our community UNIQUE. Without them we would just be another spot on the map. Along with in-shop pets, and dedicated arctic temperature jogging - Coffee Shop Parking Lot culture is just another wonderful lovable thing about the Valley that we can call our own. As the snow melts- and the temperatures keep rising - the laughs and smiles seem to be returning to these local gathering spots as they do every year, reminding me that it is important to talk to your neighbors and members of the community to maintain that sense of unity and knowing your community. Time for a coffee!! 024

(Mark 16:1-4) When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2) Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3) and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb? 4) But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. The women who went to Jesus’ tomb did not know the profundity of their question. Their seemingly innocuous question would actually be one of the most significant theological questions of all time. Throughout human history, we have sought to be in relationship with the God that created us. But in our limited human capacities, we were blocked from entering into relationship. Ultimately, the problem was sin. Biblical writers saw sin as “an everpresent reality that enslaves the human race and has corrupted God’s created order (Harper Collins Bible Dictionary). Sin is separation from God, because sin is ultimately any action that goes against God, God’s laws, God’s creation, God’s covenant, and God’s purposes. God sent His Son, Jesus, to take care of the problem of sin. God sent His Son to break the bonds of sin that had enslaved humanity, and thereby created a barrier between God and His beloved creation. Christ paved the way for us to enter into eternal life - a permanent, unbroken relationship with God for all time. In this life of faith, we may be beset by many questions, many uncertainties. But unlike Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, one question we need not worry about is “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb? That has been accomplished by Christ, resurrected for our sake, breaking the bonds of sin and death, providing for us the precious gift of new and eternal life in him. “Christ, the Lord, is risen today, Alleluia! Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia! Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia! Sing, ye heavens, and earth, reply, Alleluia ~ (Charles Wesley). Submitted by Elva Arseneau. 215

There’s more to people with dementia than just their dementia. Let’s start seeing them for who they are. It all begins with awareness, understanding and real conversations about the disease. So let’s start talking. Test your attitude towards dementia at www.alzheimer.ca/letstalkaboutdementia.

The Rothesay Regional Police, in partnership with Parkland in the Valley are presenting a series of free speaking engagements highlighting safety awareness, facts, and information on a variety of topics that are specifically pertinent to seniors. The Senior Speaker Series is a branch of the Seniors Police Academy, which was launched by the RRPF in 2012. The Seniors Police Academy is a six-week program. Those that participated in the project were able to gain valuable knowledge in areas such as fraud prevention, Internet safety, traffic safety, elder abuse, and reporting crime. Participants were also shown how the police department works and how files are investigated. The program has proven itself to be an innovative and groundbreaking initiative. The participants are more knowledgeable in key areas of crime prevention, they are better equipped to handle themselves in situations such as abuse or fraud, and they feel more comfortable with the police in their area and are more willing to report suspicious activity. As a result of the success of the Academy, a partnership was formed between the RRPF and Parkland in the Valley. This partnership’s objective was to offer a small selection of the presentations from the Academy to a larger portion of the public. The next presentation for the Senior Speaker Series will feature Sgt. Evan Scott of the Traffic Service Division. Sgt. Scott will be presenting Traffic Safety: Seniors and Driving Awareness. This presentation focuses on driving and traffic issues that specifically effect seniors. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, March 27th at 10:00am in Jubilee Hall located at 19 Shannex Drive in Quispamsis. Space is limited so please call 847-7275 to register. Admission is free, however donations of nonperishable food items will be accepted for the KV Food Bank. If you have any questions regarding the Seniors Police Academy or the Seniors Speaker Series please contact Cst. Krystal Daley at 849-5791 or krystal.daley@nbpolice.ca. 046

DIVA

(Short for Marmalade)

What a lovely, gentle and a total princess! BUT! A Cutie-Petutie! Diva is a 7 month old buff and white female, medium-haired with a plumed tail. She has beautiful amber colored eyes. Spayed, vaccinated with booster and all parasites taken care of, plus a clean bill of health from the Vet's. A great talker, purrer with a quirky personality. Loves to be petted, picked-up and cradled in your arms. Loves her toys (and we mean her toys, not anyone else's). She gets along with the other felines in the Sanctuary, of course this means that they 'skirt' around her. She would suit a home with lots of toys and on her own. Attention is a big demand on her wish list. If interested in meeting Diva, please call the Sanctuary to make an appointment. Adoption fee for cats in our care is $115 which includes:

We at Ossekeag Publishing decided we were in need of a March Break this year. Why should such a great idea be restricted to just the education system? No, we didn’t just lock the doors and everyone head south for the week. Instead, we did it the Ossekeag way and brought the warmth inside our doors. We started the week off with a pancake breakfast on Monday morning and have been celebrating every day of the week, and will end up on Friday with a potluck picnic at the beach (which is our production room the other 51 weeks of the year). We broke out bright coloured clothing, our “flower power” hippy inner child and played with hair and hats and playdough. Even on the days the weather was dull and dreary, we laughed and played indoors. Oh, yeah, and we still sent our two publications to press, too. In fact, we had so much fun we are already planning our next week-long event! I fear that somehow over the last few years Ossekeag Publishing has been infected by a case of “corporate creep”. I recognize that there are many positive aspects to a corporate culture, and some things such as proper employment contracts and HR policies are a necessity, but by adopting those positive pieces we were also pulled into some corporate vortex that sucked out too much of the fun! It is time to get that back and this March Break week was a first step back to that path. That doesn’t mean unprofessional or careless. It does mean that whether or not the sun is shining outdoors is immaterial, we have the sunshine in here with us with the smiles and energy of the Ossekeag crew fueling it. Thx to all for being such a great group to work with! “I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.” ~ Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat “A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.” ~ Richard Branson, Virgin Group. 002
