RAVINGS By Mike Hickey

25 years experience in the design & installation of heat pump systems.

“GREENHOUSE PROBLEMS If you recall, I recently wrote about how well our new house had worked out!! Despite that success, not all house issues have gone as well. I am talking about our greenhouse ... the one I purchased for the wife’s birthday nearly three years ago. I set it up in June (I think) and everything was grand until the following spring when a very major wind blew it all to pieces!! It took a week or two to track down and recover every piece. Some apparently had taken off to the northwest, while others were blown to the northeast. Undisturbed by minor setbacks, I decided that it might be better to move the location of the greenhouse from the wide open spaces to one sheltered by the garage. A few weeks later and we are up and operating once again!! That is until about two months ago when another nasty wind from the southwest, blew the front half of the structure to pieces!! Now in case you are wondering, I have investigated and found no reason to believe that shoddy workmanship is to blame. Sure there might have been a missing screw or bolt here and there but the base was still firmly anchored following both acts of destruction. It seems clear that simply doing another repair is unlikely to have long lasting results. My highly scientific guess, is that the polycarbonate panels sit in aluminum tracks and under high winds allow enough air to penetrate the interior to start setting up stresses. These stresses will pop open the roof vent and that allows even greater air flow and finally, destruction. So my plan now is to rebuild with a much stronger wooden frame and actually seal the panels with caulking to virtually eliminate air penetration. Now, all of this can be done for practically nothing ... assuming of course that the missus would be agreeable to receiving a special gift for her next birthday. It just seems downright proper that she get a portable sawmill for this coming birthday, so that I can repair her previous birthday present. I have even offered to help her get it set up!!! So anyone having a fairly basic portable mill for sale, let me know!! If there are two or more available, the missus will of course get to pick her preferred colour. 001

MARIGOLD PROJECT 2013 Marigolds on the same day, June 6th at 9:30am as we are in the process of approaching the Guinness Book of World Records. For more information visit: marigolds.ca. We start growing in March and the kids love it! Many elementary, middle and high schools participate, it builds pride and confidence! In 16 years we have never had a garden vandalized - ownership. All children can learn and all children have the right to a good learning environment. Many schools now use cross-curriculum training with the Marigold Project- counting germination rates, and studying the life cycle, poetry, art work, science, math, language skills, social studies - stories of where the Marigolds are being planted so all courses are covered and connected. The children get lots of exercise and have fun so it’s good for mental and physical wellness. Many schools have BBQs, parades, make hats and colour t-shirts. All the children are recognized in a very positive way by their community. We have helped children to empower themselves as they see their community’s well being as part of their responsibility. We have reconnected children to nature and encourage them to use this knowledge and skill to grow and plant their own food, gardens and to plant more trees in their community. Learning is fun. This is our 16th year, tens of thousands of children and millons of marigolds .We have won six international and national awards and the project has been copied in several countries. Home and Garden TV even did a short documentary on it 14 years ago. It’s now become a year round project and has created a lot of pride and confidence and has empowered our children in the Fundy Region. 235

Eight years have passed since the untimely death of Dan Johnson, during which time various steps have been explored by the Saint John Branch of the NB Genealogy Society to memorialize his life and his contributions to history and genealogy in NB. The Branch finally decided to endow two scholarships in history at the Saint John Campus of UNB. Daniel Fred Johnson was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine, but grew up in Perth-Andover and graduated from Southern Victoria High School. Danny’s work on his own family history led to a broader involvement in genealogy and he began to help other people. He taught one of the first courses in genealogy in Saint John in 1979. He was instrumental in founding the New Brunswick Genealogy Society and served as president of the Saint John Branch and as vice-president of the provincial body. He was one of the first to obtain certification through the Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes. He also transcribed cemetery records, provided a genealogical research service and helped genealogists from across Canada and around the world. He became one of the leaders in New Brunswick genealogy as it became his passion and his full time occupation. Danny was also interested in NB history, particularly of Kings and Queens Counties, Saint John, the Loyalists, pre-Loyalist settlement and the military settlements of Victoria County. He authored numerous articles and books on subjects ranging from specific families, to Jack the Ripper, to compilations of sources and records that would assist genealogists. In 1995, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to local history and genealogy, Danny was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the American Association for State and Local History. To fund the scholarships in perpetuity will require a capital sum of about $50,000. To raise this amount the Branch is calling for support from all the members of the NB Genealogical Society as well as all users of Dan’s Vital Statistics from New Brunswick newspapers and the general public. The fundraising commenced in 2012 and will continue for the next three years. Tax receipts will be issued by NBGS Inc., a registered Canadian charity. The fund will be administered by the Greater Saint John Community Foundation, which was established over 35 years ago as a way for people to assist certain worthy causes. All donations are welcome and can be sent to: Saint John Branch, NBGS PO Box 2423 Saint John, NB E2L 3V9. Visit the website at: nbgssj.ca. 068

MUSINGS By Debbie Hickey

MARCH BREAK We at Ossekeag Publishing decided we were in need of a March Break this year. Why should such a great idea be restricted to just the education system? No, we didn’t just lock the doors and everyone head south for the week. Instead, we did it the Ossekeag way and brought the warmth inside our doors. We started the week off with a pancake breakfast on Monday morning and have been celebrating every day of the week, and will end up on Friday with a potluck picnic at the beach (which is our production room the other 51 weeks of the year). We broke out bright coloured clothing, our “flower power” hippy inner child and played with hair and hats and playdough. Even on the days the weather was dull and dreary, we laughed and played indoors. Oh, yeah, and we still sent our two publications to press, too. In fact, we had so much fun we are already planning our next week-long event! I fear that somehow over the last few years Ossekeag Publishing has been infected by a case of “corporate creep”. I recognize that there are many positive aspects to a corporate culture, and some things such as proper employment contracts and HR policies are a necessity, but by adopting those positive pieces we were also pulled into some corporate vortex that sucked out too much of the fun! It is time to get that back and this March Break week was a first step back to that path. That doesn’t mean unprofessional or careless. It does mean that whether or not the sun is shining outdoors is immaterial, we have the sunshine in here with us with the smiles and energy of the Ossekeag crew fueling it. Thx to all for being such a great group to work with! “I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.” ~ Dr. Seuss, The Cat in the Hat “A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.” ~ Richard Branson, Virgin Group. 002
