RAVINGS By Mike Hickey
“WOODLANDS WALKING”
For the very few of you with good memories, you may recall quite a few years ago, when I wrote about “Garden Boys” and “Garden Gods”. Garden Boys are all the people like myself who do all the gardening scut work like digging and lifting, while the “Garden Gods”, such as the missus, get to decide what plants go where and essentially who prospers and who ends up in the compost pile. So now, that I have decided that our woodlot needs some major pruning, I have become the biggest “Garden God” in our family. I mean the missus is in charge of the fate of maybe a few dozen plants. Hah, ... my best estimate is our woodlot has somewhere in the neighbourhood of 500,000 trees that need their fates decided. With all this responsibility, a walk in the woods has taken on a new dimension. For the missus, a walk in the woods involves putting her head down and following the established wood’s road. While she is quite adept at spotting critter prints in the snow, I personally prefer to look around and see if there is an actual bear, moose or coyote who may be taking an interest in me. But now, I am not only stopping to observe whether critters are about, but I also stop and peer endlessly at trees. “That dying birch should come down, one of those spruce should be thinned, do I eliminate the crooked maple or the fir that are growing together??” With the responsibility for making life or death decisions for half a million residents, I feel compelled to get off the wood’s road and meet as many of them as possible and so side trips are common. So now a simple walk in the woods is never simple. “Have I looked over that knoll, those trees down there seem interesting, etc., etc.” But, I am really having difficulty remembering names. “Are you Mrs Cedar 1542 or are you Mrs Cedar 3647?” At times I find it bothersome that humans should be manipulating Mother Nature. While, there appears to be clear evidence that managing wood lots carefully can improve their productivity and even improve habitat for critters, I still sometimes wonder if man can actually do better. On the other hand, no one seems to think that we should try and live on wild potatoes and carrots. If sowing potatoes and thinning carrots is OK, why not careful management of trees?? Just a few things to think on as I wander about, wondering .. “Where am I??” 800

Song
KOC CRIB
of a Summer Eve
I never heard the moonlight Skimming the water’s top And I have tried with all my might To hear a little dew drop. Never heard the trees think Or the flowers raise their heads Never heard the robin blink When they dig in the flower beds. I have never heard a star Twinkling in the sky Never heard the sandbar Asking the question “Why”. So when they sometimes ask me About the sound of a summer night I wonder how it would be If someone tuned in right.

THE TREE Ah, to again be the sapling Swaying in the warm breeze With birds and squirrels Nesting among my green leaves; While under my inviting boughs Lovers come to carve their names; And the gentle forest creatures Take shelter from the rain. Alas, now I stand alone against A dark forbidding landscape, My heart hollow; my roots Being consumed by broom rape, My branches are bare and twisted; And there is no more song And though their names remain The lovers have long been gone.

Pation Clean-up for Seasonal Entertaining Outdoor entertaining is a primary component of the warm-weather season. Individuals flock to their backyard patios and decks to barbecue or simply soak up a little sun. Over the course of the fall and winter your patio may have experienced some wear and tear. Or if the patio is several years old, it may need some maintenance to improve its appearance for the new season. Maintenance often depends on the material used.

Before starting, figure out what your patio needs and stock up on the supplies. Many patios are poured concrete, and a simple pressure-washing could be all that's needed to revive the look. Pressure washers can be rented or purchased. If there are cracks or chips in the patio, some minor patchwork may be able to fix unsightly problems. There are fast-dry patching kits. If the patio is especially damaged, it may be in your best interest to simply replace the patio or cover it with a different material, like wood decking. Some patios are constructed from paving stones. Pavers are usually installed atop a thin layer of sand and then more sand is brushed into the seams between the pavers to set them in place. Over time, the sand may become dislodged causing the pavers to wobble or even grow uneven. Taking the time to brush new sand over a paver patio can keep the stones stable. Because pavers are not a solid surface, weeds can grow in between the stones. Hand weeding and the application of a weed-killing product can help with keeping weeds at bay and from being unsightly. 10 www.ossekeag.ca

This year, maybe it's not about refreshing the patio but installing one instead. Although many homeowners choose to make the installation of a patio a do-it-yourself project with fine results, if you have a large yard or an intricate design, you may want to price out masons. These contractors could have relationships with suppliers of concrete and patio pavers, which could save on the cost of materials for the job. Plus you will have the benefit of knowing the work was done correctly. Now is also the time to wash the cushions to your patio set to enhance your patio decor. Do so on a sunny, warm day to allow the cushions to dry adequately so they won't develop mildew or mold staining and odor. If the cushions look dated or beyond repair, this season could be a good time to head to the store and purchase a new set. Nothing refreshes a patio more than bright colors and attractive accessories. While new planters filled with flowers could do the trick, coordinate patio colors with new upholstery for outdoor furniture, throw pillows and a new patio umbrella to complete the look.

Spring Garden Time Few things are anticipated more in spring than the arrival of new leaves on the trees and budding flowers in the garden. A landscape awash with fresh colors can brighten the spirit and make anyone want to head outdoors. There are many different plants that begin to show their colors in the spring. A number of perennials, annuals and trees begin to flower or show new sprouts come the springtime. Here are some plants that can be planted for springtime enjoyment.
Looking for first signs of color? Look no further than these wonderful annuals. Alyssum: Starting in April, this cascading bounty of tiny flowers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterflies. Dianthus: These vivid flowers also attract butterflies and are often a cottage garden staple. Gypsophila: Also known as baby's breath, these delicate flowers can serve as filler in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available. Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade. Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup family, these flowers bloom in shades of white to violet. Pansy: These flowers are some of the earliest spring bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips.

Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding flower.
These plants will come back year after year and offer spring shows. Cherry blossom: The flowers that sprout on cherry trees are some of the first signs of spring. Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cherry blossom festivals. Jacob's ladder: Variegated foliage that is dappled with violet-colored flowers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden. Primrose: These flowers come in a variety of shades, making them versatile in any garden. They also tend to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Sweet violet: These fragrant flowers are edible as well as attractive. These plants can self-plant, so unless a gardener wants them to spread, they should be kept contained.

7 Green Interior Car Care Tips Making green changes to the way you care for your vehicle extends beyond the type of fuel you use or keeping your tires properly inflated. Modifications to the way you care for the interior can mean the difference between eco-friendly and not.

Keep up with mess. If you clean as items become soiled, you won't have to rely on harsh chemicals to remove set-in stains. Replace carpeted mats for rubberized ones. Choose recycled rubber mats, which will require a hose-down instead of shampooing with strong carpet cleaners. Invest in a quality shop vacuum or high-powered vacuum. Routinely vacuum the interior of the vehicle to prevent ground-in dirt. Buy seat covers. Instead of using harsh chemicals to clean upholstery, removable seat covers may be able to be washed in a washing machine and cleaned with eco-friendly detergents. Stock up on dusting cloths. Static-charged dusting cloths can be used to collect dust and debris from the dashboard and instrument panel. This reduces the need for spray dusting products. Replace interior air filters. Most new vehicles have an air filtration system for the interior of the vehicle. Clogged filters can proliferate contaminants inside the cabin of the car. Frequently change the filters to ensure cleaner interior air quality. Leather interior fixer. You don't need expensive or harsh products to condition leather interior. To clean leather seats, for example, use a small drop of eco-friendly dish liquid worked into a damp rag. Clean the stain or seats. Use a damp, clean rag to collect any remaining moisture and soap residue. Buff with a dry cloth. Apply a miniscule amount of olive oil to a cloth and work it into the leather to condition it. Don't use too much or you'll be left with oily seats and a mess. 14 www.ossekeag.ca
What to Look for in Outdoor Furniture Outdoor entertaining areas have always been popular among homeowners. The ability to entertain friends and family or simply relax by yourself is something homeowners cherish, particularly during the warm weather seasons. Finding the right furniture to match your outdoor area, be it a deck, patio or poolside lounging area, is essential to making the most of this special area of the home. When shopping for outdoor furniture, consider the following.
Building? When it comes to Lumber -We Deliver.
Siding, Cedar Decking, Tongue and Groove Pine.
Belleisle Creek 485-1010 www.mcmillanforest.com
Weight: Unlike furniture inside the home, outdoor furniture will be moved around quite frequently, such as to protect it from inclement weather or changing seasons. As a result, the weight of the furniture bears importance. While you don't want furniture that's too lightweight and will blow away any time a strong gust of wind comes along, it's a good idea to choose furniture that isn't too heavy. This makes it easier to move should a storm suddenly appear and it won't require the entire household to help move the furniture into and out of the garage when inclement weather arrives. Comfort: The whole idea behind an outdoor entertaining area is to have a relaxing place to spend time outside. So be sure to choose furniture that's comfortable and can handle the elements. Metal furniture, for example, might be durable, but such furniture can also get very hot if out in the sun. Versatility: Many homeowners enjoy changing their home's interior decor from time to time, and it can be just as enjoyable to do the same to a home's exterior decor. That said, look for furniture that can be accented with a variety of accessories, so you can change the look of your outdoor entertaining area easily.

On our cover Spread the Net was covered by Lakefield Elementary School
When a community comes together with one common goal, awesome things can happen, and usually do. Our friends, families, staff members and most important, our students began their work in mid-January and then kept LES moving forward in spreading the word about Spread the Net. Our activities included Bake Sales, Sock Hop, Read-a-Thon, Movie Night, PJ Day, Yard Sale, Knitting, Bracelets/Necklaces, and Book Sales, along with Raffles for Sea Dogs items, Valentine Grams, Cookbook, Samosa Sale, Dessert Trolley, one month’s profit from our school canteen, and tremendous community support. Through this effort we raised $15,884.47 or we were able to purchase 1,588 bed nets to help in the prevention of malaria due to mosquito bites. The Rick Mercer Report arrived at LES on March 19th. The day was filled with lots of excitement as Rick Mercer moved around our school, talking with students and staff members. His warmth put our students at ease and made it possible for his film crew to get those special moments on tape. Highlights for our students ranged from his grand entrance with our students cheering and chanting his name to Rick hanging upside down on our playground equipment having a chat with various students who were also upside down. For our Gr. 3–5 students, it might be his participation in the LES version of Running with the Bulls. What an awesome sport he was being pulled around our gym on a scooter, by our phys-ed specialist, as students propelled one very large ball with the hope of running Rick over! We are sure his time in kindergarten won’t be soon forgotten by either he or the students as they measured Rick from head to toe with cubea-links – him lying on the floor and the students very close at hand. While the official close of Spread the Net was on February 29th, the spirit of caring for others continues to live on in our children. Memories of reaching out will remain with us as our bed nets continue to protect the children of Africa from mosquitoes and malaria. Our goal from the start was to help prevent the death of children from malaria with a hope of winning a visit from Rick Mercer. To everyone, no matter what your donation or contribution was; thank you from Lakefield Elementary School and the nameless children of Africa. 223 Cover Photo: Students Hannah James and Caitlin Brown welcome Rick Mercer in their own way.
Rick Mercer visits LES and thanks them for their generous donation to Spread the Net.

t.o.p.s. recognition days
In 1948, Milwaukee housewife, Esther Manz, decided she had put on weight over the Christmas holidays. Three of her friends joined her in the weight loss struggle and TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) became a reality. In New Brunswick, TOPS has 93 chapters, with 26 of them in the southern part of the province. TOPS follows the Canada Food guide and promotes portion control and exercise. Weight loss is rewarded by being acknowledged by the chapter members at a chapter level, but is also acknowledged by province wide recognition, which is referred to as PRD or Provincial Recognition Days. This year, the Provincial Recognition Days are being held at the Trade and Convention Centre on April 13 & 14th with upwards of 1000 TOPS members from all over NB attending. This year our special guest will be Barbara Cady, President of TOPS. This is her first visit to Saint John and New Brunswick. For further information and a chapter near you, please contact Donna or John Buckley, Area Captains, Southern New Brunswick at 849-0550 or snbtopnews1@yahoo.ca. 918

Moore from Ottawa
On March 12th, our government voted in favour of passing The Safe Streets and Communities Act. We campaigned on a promise to crack down on criminals committing dangerous crimes and we are delivering on that commitment. With the passing of The Safe Streets and Communities Act, our government is tackling crime head on by ensuring criminals are held accountable and that victims are provided the justice they deserve. One of the greatest responsibilities we have as a government is to protect Canadians and ensure that those who commit crimes are held to account. One of the major components of our legislation targets the source of the illicit drug trade – the drug traffickers. We are stiffening penalties for the production and trafficking of illegal drugs. The criminals we are targeting are those who are involved in selling drugs to kids on playgrounds and near schools. In addition, the Safe Streets and Communities Act ended house arrest for serious crimes like kidnapping and human trafficking as well as eliminated pardons for certain crimes against children. It also better protects the public from violent young offenders, supports victims of terrorism and prevents the trafficking, abuse and exploitation of vulnerable immigrants. Canadians deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities and that means keeping dangerous criminals off our streets. We will continue to fight crime and protect Canadians so that our communities are safe places for people to live, raise their families and do business. Yours sincerely, Hon. Rob Moore, P.C, M.P. 226

Good People
A Yiddish Folk Tale An old man sat outside the walls of a great city. When travellers approached, they would ask the old man, “What kind of people live in this city?” The old man would answer, “What kind of people live in the place where you came from?” If the travelers answered, “Only bad people live in the place where we came from,” the old man would reply, “Continue on; you will find only bad people here.” But if the travelers answered, “Good people live in the place where we came from,” then the old man would say, “Enter, for here too, you will find only good people.” CC17

MUSINGS By Debbie Hickey
SAVE YOUR PENNIES . . .
Cause you can’t do much else with them! Time was a penny could actually buy you something. Today their only real value is in making change. In fact, the Royal Canadian Mint spends millions every year making new pennies, because a large percentage of the old ones go out of circulation. They get tossed in jars or simply tossed out and must then be replaced at great cost, since the raw material used to make a penny is worth more than the penny itself. I can’t remember the last time I actually paid for something using any pennies. Now, Michael would no doubt argue that is just my poor memory, but that is another story. To be clear, I rarely use cash at all in these days of debit cards, but when I do use cash it never includes pennies. I complain about the weight of my purse when coin starts to build up and toss the offending pennies in the change jar. A little research (love the Internet!) reminded me that in 2010, a Senate committee recommended that the federal government remove the penny from circulation and that guidelines be established for rounding off purchase prices for cash-only transactions. This is already done in many countries, including New Zealand and Australia. What are we waiting for? And if you think you want to cart around all that weight to go shopping, consider the specifications of the Currency Act before you step up to the cash. Did you know it is illegal in Canada to pay for a 26 cent item in all pennies. The limit is 25 cents. If you are paying for your item in nickels, then its illegal to pay for it in nickels if its over $5. It’s also illegal to pay for something over $10 dollars in all dimes or quarters or something over $25 in loonies. But I did come across this story on the value of a penny: “Electricity can be dangerous. My nephew tried to stick a penny into a plug. Whoever said a penny doesn’t go far didn’t see him shoot across that floor. I told him he was grounded.” ~ Tim Allen. 801
