RAVINGS By Mike Hickey

“SPRING UPDATE” Well, let’s see what is going on!! I have a couple of loads of wood that I cut over the winter, while doing some thinning, that is now all cut and split. I have also been out this spring doing a bit more thinning and patch cutting. I am going to take it easy though until we get a woodlot management plan in place, because that will help set the priorities in terms of what should be done first. For those individuals who own woodlots and want to take some proactive measures to improve the quality and quantity of wood that is growing, there are remarkably inexpensive services available by joining a local wood co-op. For those who just want to sit on their property and let mother nature do her thing, that is fine also, just consider protecting the property through land trusts or easements that will stop future owners from clear cutting what has taken many, many years to develop. Thanks to the dry spells we have had this spring, I have gotten out to do some more work on my woods road. Unfortunately, after just one heavy rain it takes about a week for it to dry out and useable again. My biggest hope, is that before winter, I will have all of the ditching done so that it should only take a fairly short time to dry out and be usable after a heavy downpour. Back in the woods, we are scouting along the roadside for desirable small trees such as spruce, pine and some cedar, and replanting them in areas that are exclusively fir and/or birch. In just a hundred or so short years, the forest makeup of trees should be significantly better. Every time I walk by my dead hemlock remains, I wonder if there is such a thing as “Tree CPR”. If there is, I suspect that the time for which it might work is long past. Oh Sigh!! Outside of the woods, we are doing a bit more landscaping and planting, but nothing major so far. The grand-grand kids are both very cute and lovable, the missus is still annoying and The Jet seems to be following in her foot steps. (Maybe more later.) On the lighter side: 1. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak 2. He who laughs last, thinks the slowest. 3. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine. 4. Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don’t. 5. Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool. 800

MULCH TIME AGAIN

Mulch sales abound at this time of year and along with them the hints from most garden centers and landscape bods that the product will render your garden instantly weed free and practically work free. Be not fooled! Quite frankly, working in my garden gives me great joy and a freshly weeded bed provides a lot more satisfaction than a newly scrubbed kitchen floor ever could! Certainly the mulch has a killing effect when laid at about a three inch depth however it’s prudent to bear in mind that what can kill the undesirables can also wipe out the treasures. If your lifestyle dictates the use of mulch, care needs to be taken with the application; a space of at least six inches around the plant or bush, should be left where compost mixed with some well rotted manure can be applied, this insures that there’s enough nourishment for the plant to survive since the mulch will take a lot of nutrients from the soil as it decomposes. Mulch should always be applied after a soaking rain in order to trap the moisture in the soil. I use heavy mulch on pathways and actually recycle the large plastic bags on the surface covered with layers of newspapers and topped of with the mulch. Sadly this method is not suitable elsewhere in the garden. With advancing years the plastic bagged type is infinitely more manageable than the great truck loads that I have used in the past By not using mulch on the flower beds there is better opportunity for plants to expand and a greater likelihood of those wonderful volunteer plants, blown in by the wind or dropped from the heavens by passing aviators; they are always great fun and often provide treasures that could wreck the budget at the local nurseries. This is a great time of year to clean out ponds and care needs to be taken to preserve the wild life in them; a collection of water snails is a valuable asset to keeping things ship shape, so it’s best to lift the leaves with a small plastic rake and sit them down on the surround of the pond, giving suitable time for the livestock to return. Every pond gets overgrown with time and the plant life needs to be reduced to a point where at least 1/3 of the pond is open water. I have just completed that task in a very small pond and was rewarded with the sight of a pair of mallard ducks taking stock of the accommodations! So much good stuff in life is free and it seems to me that the major benefits of hands on gardening are the pure joy of hearing the birds sing and watching plant life come into bloom. Celebrate the good stuff! 805

KINGS WAY CARE CENTRE NEWS

On May 1st volunteers Nancy Shipley from Brunswick Nurseries and Barry McPhee from McKenzie Seeds joined Grade 5 students at Quispamsis Elementary to commence our ‘Lavender & Lupins’ program. This program will get students engaged in planting in the classroom and at the end of the school year, they will come to Kings Way Care Centre and plant in the outside flower beds and on the hill behind the dining room. Each student was given two sunflower seeds and two other seeds of their choice – giant pumpkin, watermelon, cucumber and tomatoes. They will be able to take these home to enjoy in their own gardens. This program will continue in the years ahead when our year round greenhouse is operational. It is a great way for youngsters and seniors to form friendships. 221

The SJDSS (Saint John Down Syndrome Society) is joining forces with M&M meats in Quispamsis once again this year in a joint effort to raise funds for our group and to raise awareness about Down syndrome. Even if you are unable to volunteer that day please make an effort to drop by and buy a hotdog or hamburger and drink to help support us and make sure to spread the word to everyone you know that we will be there! Good People

A Yiddish Folk Tale An old man sat outside the walls of a great city. When travellers approached, they would ask the old man, “What kind of people live in this city?” The old man would answer, “What kind of people live in the place where you came from?” If the travelers answered, “Only bad people live in the place where we came from,” the old man would reply, “Continue on; you will find only bad people here.” But if the travelers answered, “Good people live in the place where we came from,” then the old man would say, “Enter, for here too, you will find only good people.” CC18

It’s that time again! T4G’s Future Focus Foundation and Portage Atlantic are recruiting participants for this summer’s Stride for Success charity relay. Stride for Success is the charity portion of Saint John’s annual Run Through History: celebration of green space marathon event, and will take place this year on Sunday, July 15th. Portage Atlantic is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping Atlantic Canadian youth to find freedom from addiction. Funds raised through Stride for Success are used to develop a 3.8km trail at the Cassidy Lake youth residential treatment centre. Here, young people undergoing rehabilitation can get some exercise, breathe in the fresh air, and take some time to reflect on their difficult journey. Physical activity is an integral part the therapeutic program at Portage, and the Recovery Trail will provide a wonderful venue for biking, snowshoeing, running, and other outdoor activities in every season. People of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to join in this event. The goal is simply to get out, have fun, and support local youth who are working hard each day to turn their lives around. Participants will also have a chance to win some great prizes. This project has received wonderful support from the community over the past two years and is nearing its goal – but it still needs your help to be successful. In order to bring this dream to fruition, Portage Atlantic and T4G are now calling on community members to lace up their sneakers and run or walk on July 15th in support of at-risk Atlantic Canadian youth. For information on how to get involved, contact Portage Atlantic at 472-4847 or T4G’s Karlene Wall at 632-2520. 838

5 Amenities that you should pay close attention to when buying:

1. Look at the kitchen appliances: One of the most expensive parts of homes are the appliances. 2. Finishes and materials: Once you know your price range, know what finishes are expected in your price point. 3. Outdoor areas of the home: Don’t forget to look at the roof, gutters, downspouts, and inspect the outdoor condition of the home. 4. Bathroom amenities: Similarly to the kitchen, look at the bathroom plumbing fixtures, shower/tub to see what condition these amenities are in. 5. Major systems: Take a look at the heating/air conditioner unit, hot water heater, and other major systems in the house when looking at homes.

Moore from Ottawa

Hon. Rob Moore, P.C, M.P. Our government is committed to safer streets and communities and we are putting the rights of victims first. To support victims of crime, our government is introducing legislation that will hold criminals accountable for the crimes they commit and provide justice for all victims. On Tuesday, April 24th, our government introduced an act to amend the Criminal Code that would see convicted offenders held more accountable to victims of crime by doubling the victim surcharge they must pay following their crime. By doing so, our government is helping to provide the support victims of crime need to move forward following such an experience. On April 20th, our government introduced the Federal Income Support for Parents of Murdered or Missing Children to help families cope with the death or disappearance of a child. With the introduction of this support benefit, parents can take off the time they need following such a tragic event. The support is a benefit of up to 35 weeks to help ease the financial difficulty parents must deal with. Our government will stand with victims of crime and all Canadians through our commitment to ensuring that our streets and communities are safe. We will continue to take significant steps towards holding criminals accountable and delivering justice for victims. We were elected on that commitment and we will deliver. 226

SJ Airport Meet & Greet Program

The Meet & Greet program at the Saint John Airport will begin again shortly for the 2012 season. Visitors to the Greater Saint John area arriving via the Saint John airport are greeted by friendly, helpful volunteers dressed in cheerful red vests. The Meet & Greet program has proved popular over the years and is indicative of the hospitality available across the region. Volunteers indicate which flights they are interested in greeting, typically volunteering for two hours, one day a week. Volunteers are able to choose which days of the week suits their schedule and are able to select the time of day they prefer. Anyone interested in further details is encouraged to contact Colleen Kemp Mitchell at 638-5584 or by email at cmitchell@ saintjohnairport.com. Expenses for volunteers such as parking, coffee, vests, and other incidentals are covered by the Airport. Meet & Greeters offer tourism information, answer questions about the region, and hand out small gifts to arriving passengers. The Saint John Airport has over 225,000 people per year fly through the airport, and serves as the first impression of the community for many of these travelers. 943

On Thursday, May 10th, at Kings Valley Wesleyan Center, students from across District 6 presented projects based upon the heritage found within their community and Canada. Exhibited projects focused on a variety of topics, including the history of our area, the contributions of the First Peoples, sport legacy, and famous Canadians. This annual event is supported jointly by School District 6 and the Department of Culture, Tourism and Healthy Living. Prizes were awarded to our top finishers in the various categories. “Have a Heart” fundraiser

It’s time to come together again and help someone in need! Oceans of Ink and the small business’ of Sussex are hosting their 4th annual fundraising event - “Have a Heart” on Saturday, June 2nd starting at 10:00am, and this year the funds are being raised to save the life of young Nathan Beaudoin. Nate’s family needs our help! So this year our fundraiser is for them! As before, we will be offering ribbon tattoos for $40, but this year we will also be offering small heart tattoos, especially for Nate, with 100% of the proceeds going to Nate and his family. Nathan, who has just turned one, has a rare and complex congenital heart condition called Right Atrial Isonmerism/ Heterotaxy. Nate’s only hope of survival is a complex heart surgery that is only offered in Boston. The estimated cost for the surgery is approximately $300,000, which does not include accommodations or travel expenses. But tattoos aren’t the only way we’ll be raising funds. There will be food (walking tacos), live music, art, 50-50 draw, raffles, silent auction, and that’s just at Oceans of Ink! There is a growing list of small business’ in Sussex that are also volunteering to participate in the day. Keep checking the event on facebook (Oceans of Ink Presents: Have a Heart!) for a list of business’ involved, activities and for more information! Our fundraisers in past years have been a huge success, and we’re all really looking forward to it this year! We are looking for volunteers to help us organize serve food, sell tickets and other similar jobs at Oceans of Ink and we are also accepting donations for raffle/silent auction. If you are interested in volunteering, donating or becoming a part of this fundraiser, please contact Cory or Kathy at Oceans of Ink, 4335006 or come see us at 14 Church Ave. Sussex. 835

Hospice ‘penny drive’

With the Canadian penny becoming extinct in the fall of 2012, Hospice has launched Penny Drive, with the theme of the drive being “We can care for many with your penny”. Hospice is hoping the public will donate their unwanted pennies to help fund care at Bobby’s Hospice. Pennies can be dropped off at Bobby’s Hospice at 385 Dufferin Row or at The Hospice Shoppe at 77 Catherwood Street. Since opening in November 2010, Bobby’s Hospice has provided care and support to over 160 people on the end of life journey and helped to free up over 3,700 acute care bed days at the Saint John Regional Hospital. The cost of care at Bobby’s Hospice is $430/day. The NB Government provides $200/day and Hospice provides the remaining $230/day through fundraising and donations. “We make every penny count,” says Sandy Johnson, CEO. “This is another way our community can help make Hospice care possible when it is needed the most.” 964

MUSINGS By Debbie Hickey

E NEWS

We recently sent out our very first e-newsletter. This is something we have talked about for some time and although the first issue was quite time consuming the response has been positive, with several of our customers even taking the time to email us to tell us so. It is our hope that our advertising customers will find it a useful resource full of all kinds of tips and information, much as we hope these community magazines provide our readers with a whole community of interesting and useful news and events. I sometimes think of just 12 years ago when Mike and I first began Ossekeag Publishing. We took on an office with just three computers, two for creating the publications and one which was hooked up the internet. Most of our editorial came in as hard copy and had to be typed. Ad copy was a hand drawn sketch or occasionally (from companies with a national presence) an “ad mat” that could be scanned. Very little came to us via email. My six year old grand-daughter is always fascinated by how little connection to the bigger world Nana and Grumpy had as kids. I was her age when our family got our first television, with all of one channel and a GREAT test pattern for large parts of the 24-hour day. Interestingly, though, yesterday we watched some of those same cartoons that I saw as a kid . . . thanks to YouTube. Tom & Jerry and Sylvester & Tweety were both big hits. She laughed . . . and then went back a bit to rewatch the funniest section again. Not only was that impossible when I saw them, I also watched them in black and white, a concept completely foreign to her. She is amazed that there was no Dora, no Treehouse and no Barbie. Progress has lots of good in it, but not all change is positive. “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much it is whether we provide enough for those who have little.” ~ Franklin D. Roosevelt. 801
