The Sussex Herald
I’ve talked a lot about my pregnancy over the past little while. I suppose it’s only natural considering one has a tendency to write what they know. What many don’t know is that I consider this to be my one true miracle. I was diagnosed with a thyroid condition in my teens and over the course of treatment was told I would not have children. I was young and had no desire for babies at the time, so the idea of not being able to carry a child did not concern me. Looking back, I may have misunderstood the actual “inability” to bear children as there was very little discussion regarding this “side effect” of treatment. I went through my twenties blithely planning on adoption; I had my plans for a career and figured I would deal with the family matter later. Then I met Kevin. We were together for a matter of days when I realized what we had was “the real deal”. Within six weeks we had met the other’s family, and that family was hinting at marriage. And then I got scared. I knew Kevin wanted a family and despite assuring me that he was okay with adoption, I felt strongly that I would be doing him a disservice. So I ran. Thank heavens that Kevin is an understanding and patient man. He waited me out… for over two years. When I finally came around, the idea of not being able to give him a baby continued to bother me, so I decided to check with the doctor for confirmation. Imagine my surprise when I learned a baby was possible, if a little more difficult. Suddenly, I had baby fever! We were so excited at the mere prospect of a family. Like any young couple we started
planning, hoping and dreaming. Then, in 2014, we had our dreams fulfilled, before being dashed by not one but two failed pregnancies. The concept of miscarriage is a strange thing. It is such a small, insignificant word to convey the overwhelming and devastating thoughts and feelings that suddenly arise. There is a sense of loss and isolation that descends, and persists, while outwardly, nothing has changed. For the better part of a year, I refused to even consider trying for another baby. Finally, we decided to let nature take her course and were ultimately rewarded. We learned we were expecting in October, 2016, but waited to share the news until we were past the “danger zone”. With frequent checkups, multiple ultrasounds and an amazing medical support team we have been assured of a healthy pregnancy thus far. Baby Crealock is due this month and all signs point to delivery of a healthy little miracle. For all the people out there struggling with a similar loss, for anyone fighting to regain their equilibrium, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Talking and sharing your story can help; by acknowledging our loss to others, Kevin and I have been able to find love and support through our community and from each other. I hope by sharing our story it will help others find peace. 0001

WELL RESTED DO YOU SNORE? THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT! Most people use a cell phone every day. Texting, checking email, Facebook, taking pictures, keeping in contact with friends and family. They have taken the place of a watch for most people. Most of us would notice that our cell phone was missing well before we would notice a missing wallet. There are apps now for just about everything, including apps that can analyze snoring. These snoring apps can record your snores, play it back, and even rate the severity. Why do this? First of all, if you are unaware that you snore, you may need to hear it for yourself to know that you do. Do you think your friends and family are exaggerating how loudly you snore? These apps can give you an idea of the severity of your snoring. Some apps can compare each night of snoring, letting you test the effectiveness of certain treatments. You can see how factors such as medications, alcohol or body position
can affect your snoring. A snoring app can even give you a clue that there may be something more serious going on. You may notice while listening to your snores that you are having pauses in your breathing. This could indicate a serious but treatable condition such as sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that causes you to stop breathing at night, constantly waking your brain and body out of its much needed rest. With many snoring apps available for all types of smartphones, how do you choose? Grab your phone, go to your app store and search “snoring”. One of the best rated free apps is “SnoreLab”. You put it on your nightstand before you go to sleep and let it record through the night. You may be surprised what you hear the next day. Beware of the apps that promise to stop snoring. They work by vibrating or buzzing when they detect your snoring. This may temporarily stop
the snoring, but it works by waking you up. This is not the best way to get a good night’s sleep. It does not fix the cause of the snoring, and the snoring inevitably resumes when you fall asleep again. If your snoring is a surprise to you, discuss it with your doctor. Snoring apps do not take the place of a sleep study that records your breathing, heart rate and oxygen level. Snoring can cause daytime sleepiness and sleep apnea can cause sleepiness as well and cardiovascular problems. A home sleep study may be in order. 0038

photo shoot. Just kept acting silly. He’s a stocky, domestic short-haired male with lovely green eyes. His coat is a pale grey with white bib, belly and large mittens. Jacob has a very affectionate personality, definitely a lap cat who gets along with all his bunk mates. He’s 4 years old, has been neutered, vaccinated and ‘de-bugged’, in other words, a very happy camper. Paws & Whiskers Sanctuary Inc. FAMILY MATTERS FAMILY SUMMER ROUTINE Summer is here and it is very likely that the kids are happy to be out of school. But summer often means a lack of routine, which for many children is important. Although the routine can be more relaxed in the summer, knowing what to expect can make the days run more pleasantly. There are several basic daily activities families do that help maintain routine. These tasks include: getting up, getting dressed and having breakfast. Here are some tips to get through the summer with a little daily planning. Block Scheduling. Block scheduling provides the 'just right enough structure' to keep kids happy but not so much that they feel like they are at school. It involves setting aside general blocks of time rather than hours or minutes. It allows for flexibility should an outing or event extend or finish early. A block schedule can be broken into; morning, midday,
afternoon, and evening. Order of Operations. Order your operations but avoid strict timelines. In the summer, strict timelines are hard to adhere to and this can upset some kiddos. Tight timelines can take the fun and spontaneity out of summer so order activities instead. Using blocks of time, order your activities on the fridge or poster board. Having a schedule laid out in order and not tied to a clock gives you more freedom. Mix It Up. Block planning allows for planning a little of everything and that means there is time for something new each day. Consider scheduling activities that are made up of movement, structured/unstructured play time, down time, friends, home time, outings, screen time, chores and individual time. It's a Family Process. One wonderful way to avoid arguing about what to do is by inviting the kiddos into the process. You
can help them take ownership and get excited about what is to come over the next two months by getting their help with brainstorming activities they would like to do weekly. (You may have to keep them tied to a budget.) Boredom Busters. To avoid the ‘I’m bored’ statements create a 'bored bucket' with ideas for the kids to do. These ideas can be time fillers that can be drawn should they find themselves with nothing to do. Items can include flower picking, phone a friend or coloring. This summer enjoy the parenting journey by enjoying the fun and freedom of a family summer routine. 0006 Anita Hofmann Occupational Therapist

In 1979, Richard Long started Long’s Sales and Service, operating the business from the family home before moving to Ernie’s Chainsaw Shop on Park Street in 1989, where his son Craig Long, joined him in 2001. Craig may have officially joined the business in 2001, but small engine repair is in his blood. At six months old Craig was straddling a wheel, screwing nuts into place and repaired his first engine at six years of age. Prior to joining the family business, Craig spent two years in the Alberta oil fields before working at Hall Bros, where he serviced farm equipment and lawn tractors. Combined, Richard

TENDING TO MY PATCH HOW TO TREAT TOMATO BLIGHT How is blight identified? Blight can be difficult to spot at first, which in turn may allow the disease to spread and possibly cause significant damage before it is treated. Conscientious gardeners notice blight in its early stages: when small black or brown circles begin to form on the lower leaves of the plant. The spot usually consists of a dark outer ring with a lighter center. As blight spreads, the number of spots multiply and the leaves begin to turn yellow. The fungus moves up the plant, damaging the leaves in its path. What harm does blight cause? Blight can completely destroy your tomato crop. If you do not attempt to treat it, your plants may not form fruit or even flower effectively. If you discover blight, you must attempt to treat it. How is blight treated? The first step in stemming the spread of blight is to remove all of the damaged leaves. This is a painful process, but it must
be done in order to keep the disease from spreading. Wash your hands in between plants so as to keep from spreading blight to healthy plants or leaves. Dispose of infected leaves away from your garden. Blight lives in the ground, and by leaving infected leaves on the soil you will be furthering the spread. You will also need to plant your tomatoes in a different location for the next few years, as blight will continue to be present in the soil. Next, you must purchase a fungicide that will halt the spread of the blight. Organic growers choose a natural, copper solution, though many other products are on the market. Visit your local garden center, nursery or hardware store to find a fungicide which targets blight on tomatoes. Generally, you will need to dilute the product in water and use a spray bottle to apply it thoroughly to the entire plant. Spray until the plant's leaves are dripping with the solution.
Though you should always read the directions carefully, you will probably be instructed to apply it once a week and after rains. After you begin spray-treating your tomato plants, continue to check for the spread of blight and remove damaged leaves. Though this process is tedious, it is the only way of minimizing the damage to your plants and encouraging as much tomatoproduction as possible. 0034

SELF ESTEEM L.I.F.E: LIVE IT FULLY EVERYDAY Life unfolds in moments. So, our only challenge is dealing with the single moment we are having right now. We can stop trying to solve our entire lives - battling problems that aren’t actually happening. The past and the future only exist in our thoughts. We no longer have to deal with either but we can kill ourselves trying. Our quality of life depends on how we deal with our moments. The sign of a wise and happy person is to encounter an undesirable situation and work through it. For most of us, life is what we imagine it to be. It is not about what is actually going on around us but rather our beliefs, expectations and personal interests about it. We can not just have an experience without having a thought about the experience. To paraphrase Mark Twain: We have all been through some terrible things, some of which actually happened. Your whole life has undoubtedly led you to this present moment. Every single thing you’ve gone through - every high,
every low and everything in between - has all led you to the moment you are experiencing right now. How incredible! This means you are exactly where you should be. We often get frustrated because we feel as though we should be doing better. Whether we want a promotion, family, and/or true love, we need to be patient. These things usually show up when we least expect them. Work on yourself and live your life. Everything comes at the right time. You are exactly where you need to be to get to exactly where you want to be. Instead of lamenting about what you don’t have, appreciate what you do. Never assume that you are stuck. Life changes every single moment and so can you. Embrace reality. Growth and change can be difficult. It feels uncomfortable. Just keep in mind that not all positive feelings feel positive in the beginning. Nothing in life is as difficult as staying where you don’t belong. You deserve to be happy. You deserve
to be loved. You deserve to do well in life. Look inside yourself. You have the answers. You know yourself best. Living life fully and happily takes effort. Are you willing to spend a little more time everyday improving your outlook? No amount of guilt can solve the past and no amount of anxiety can change the future. Living just for today, for this one moment in time, is how you experience life to its fullest. Start building positive rituals into your daily life. Live intentionally. Life is a series of moments; all of which are called NOW. 0027

TALES FROM THE CAMERA BAG CREATIVE PESSIMISM Are you one of those people who can admire an athletic performance and not see the years of sacrifice and training? Or, look into into an image and wonder what made that photographer “click”. How much research and planning and failed attempts did the photographer go through before they presented the image you see now. Creatives are constantly talking to themselves and saying “this is still not good enough”, call it self doubt or perhaps “creative pessimism”. It is often difficult for a creative to look at their own work and like it much, as they can see all the flaws in it. Compliments are difficult to accept for the same reason. We could stay in this negative space of self doubt and realize that this is a place you need to be, as we are on the road of creativity. Inspiration (breathing in) comes from this negative space. This occurs often when I am woodworking as well, the design is too light, too heavy, not balanced, the design will fail…. This
very much the creative process, the creative pessimism is what generates a solution, “Plan B”. You will not likely be 100% satisfied, again, you see the flaws. At my camera club we have monthly photo critiques, where we present our images and a panel of good photographers will offer suggestion on how to turn you good image into a great image. Creative pessimism, or contentment, either word or phrase could be an inspiration killer. I will argue it is a matter of perspective. Like the club’s photo critiques, I keep an eye on my work and see where I can do better. Examine things like lighting, composition and feeling. Contentment, can be seen as ambivalent and that would be sad; rather there are times that I am content but still know I can do better. Is contentment killing your motivation? We need to feel the sting of self-doubt to engage our creative spirits, to try something completely
new and experiment with our tools and our imagination. It is within this self doubt and self criticism that our creative self lives. Our muse is pushing the bubble inside you, nudging you trying to get your attention, saying “that there is more here”; listen to me, don’t give up yet as you are just starting to see the inspiration. Wear a life preserver, once we dig deep and do some self examination that well of creativity will gush forth. Shoot-Print-Share. 0032 Edited for space. See full article at: ossekeag.ca.
