Wow... the fury of Mother Nature is unsurpassed this year. After weeks of above average temperatures and more rain and freezing rain than I ever want to see in January again, winter has arrived with a vengeance. Even during the winter-that-wouldnot-end of 2015 I don't remember having so many storm days home from work. Even Kevin stayed home! And to have it all packed into a ten day period... talk about overwhelming. At one point, I was starting to feel a little claustrophobic, which is odd considering most times I'm quite content to stay home and indulge in an day of television, reading and baking. Almost more disruptive than the storms themselves would be the cleanup that must inevitably follow; is anyone else tired of trying to lift snow over their head in an attempt to clear their driveway? I really can't complain given that Kevin and Lindsay took care of moving most of the snow from around our house. This is especially fortunate, given the fact that I barely reach five feet tall wearing my heels and the drifts at the end of the driveway following Monday's blizzard were over my head before the plow went by. We had a lot of fun trying to get the cars moved. Kevin lost one belt on the tractor while blowing the driveway clear. Lindsay stood in snow up to her waist in most places trying to clear the snow away from the doors. I crawled over the center console in my car as it was completely buried on the driver's side.

I have a picture of the imprint my rear wheel left in the snow as I imagine when I tell this story in a few years my nieces and nephews will equate it to the stories I heard growing up of my grandparents walking to school uphill both ways. We were lucky though, in all honesty. Looking around our neighborhood, it really brought home to me what an incredible community we live in. Everywhere I looked people were helping each other shovel, lending a snowblower or just generally trying to boost morale. Doorways were cleared out for elderly neighbors, groceries were delivered and people went above and beyond to make sure that no one was left wanting. My sister, who has three children under the age of nine and is expecting her fourth, told me that several of her friends stopped by to help with snow removal; a definite plus when your husband drives truck long-haul and is delayed due to weather. There is nothing like a good old fashioned Maritime winter to make me proud to call New Brunswick home. 0001

100 KIDS WHO CARE MEETING 100 Kids Who Care is gearing up for our next meeting on Monday, March 20. This will be our second meeting and we are excited to see some kids who care! The meeting will be held at the Sussex Regional Library at 6:30pm. If you haven't heard of 100 Kids Who Care, it's an organization that brings kids, Grade K-12, together to vote for one out of three great causes in our community to support! Each child brings a $10 donation and they listen to each of the three organizations explain what they do and what they would do with the money if they are chosen. The kids then vote for the cause they would like to support, the votes are counted and the charity with

the most votes receives the money the children have raised for that meeting. It's a great way for kids to get involved in our community and to feel a sense of pride knowing that they made a difference! The kids raised $250 at the last meeting for the Salvation Army Toy Drive just before Christmas and put a smile on many children's faces we're sure! We can't wait to see what they do next! For more information you can check out our Facebook Page at 100 Kids Who Care Sussex, NB. We would also like to thank our sponsor Wonderland Child Care for partnering up with us and believing in 100 Kids Who Care Sussex! 4444

INVESTING IN yOUR FUTURE significantly - meeting and exceeding longterm return expectations. History has shown that economic recoveries following recessions are typically both strong and durable. In fact, periods of expansion that came on the heels of downturns averaged 57 months to close to five years. After 1960, the average period of expansion following a recession was even longer at 71 months or close to six years. Although negative returns in the short term are relatively frequent, the possibility of receiving a positive return greatly increases as the investment term lengthens. For example, between 1960 and 2015 staying invested in the market (S&P/TSX) for a year resulted in a positive return in 74.7% of the one year periods while staying invested for 15 years resulted in a positive return of 100% of the time. In any one-year period, the returns of the S&P/TSX Composite Index have been as high as 86.9% and as low as -39.2%, a range of over 126%. However, when investors diversify their holdings and invest for

LONG-TERM INVESTMENT GOALS Investors dread volatile markets and, too often, jump out of investments when the market goes down and attempt to jump back in when it goes up. But it’s a historical fact that markets will always fluctuate and the price of any stock or equity mutual fund is bound to be somewhat volatile in the short term. The one proven approach for taking away much of your investment risk is simply this: time in the market. Study after study has proven that time in the market delivers much better returns than trying to time the market. Here are some recent findings in support of a longterm investment strategy. Many of the strongest market returns occur in the period immediately following a sharp decline in equity markets. Since 1950, following the worst 12-month periods of performance on the S&P/TSX, the market has made solid gains just 12 months later with only one exception. And within five years, the markets were up

the long term, this volatility decreases significantly. For example, a “moderate” portfolio invested for five years would have experienced a range of returns from -5% to +28% and if invested for 20 years, from +8% to +15% (S&P/TSX 1970-2015 – range of returns before taxes). Staying invested ensures you are always capitalizing on the upside of the market and reducing the impact of short-term market volatility. Most importantly, the possibility of receiving positive returns greatly increases as your investment term lengthens. Of course, having a properly diversified portfolio with the right mix of investments that matches your tolerance for risk is also key to achieving your longt e r m investment Steve Downey PFP goals. 0036 Consultant

LIFE bALANCE ADD RELAXING FOR BALANCE It is never too late to add to your list of New Year’s resolutions. Relaxing more in 2017, if it is not already part of your personal goals, should be added to the list if you are seeking more balance in your life. We live in a fast-paced life, where distractions are endless and moments of relaxation can seem elusive. Without taking these important moments of rest, however, we risk increasing our stress levels beyond control and eventually burning out. Some stress is good, like when you are about to write an important exam, interview for a job, or drive in a snowstorm. Extreme or relentless stress, however, can have harmful effects, which can lead to mental and physical deterioration. Having a ‘go-to’ grounding strategy to help you relax and alleviate stress is important. To me, meditation has become that ‘go-to’ strategy. Caitie Fenn, a Canadian meditation guru, praises meditation as one of the best ways of

staying in the present moment, which can help slow down and ultimately eliminate those invasive thoughts and inner clutter. Since beginning the transformative practice of meditation, I have been better able to unwind and relax, deal with stressful situations, and catch myself in moments of autopilot and correct it by taking deep, restorative breaths. Most importantly, however, meditation has played a crucial role in maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Changes in routine are essential in creating balance in your life. If meditation is something that you would like to try or adopt more permanently, setting aside time in your day to engage in the practice is necessary. It is also important to keep in mind that meditation is not a practice that can be mastered overnight. To avoid discouragement, keep the exercise short and simple. Find a quiet room. Sit comfortably. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. If your mind wanders (which it will… a lot), welcome the thoughts, but gently bring your attention

back to your breath. There are countless phone apps, YouTube channels and other platforms that offer free meditation audios and videos. My personal favourite is an app called Calm that provides a variety of free guided and unguided meditation audios, among other things. Based on your personal preferences, you can choose from audios such as Meditation to Calm Anxiety, Meditation to Help with SelfEsteem, Timed Meditation, and OpenEnded Meditation. Calm also features sleep stories for children and adults alike, which incorporate meditative elements to help improve your sleep. 0040

PIC OF THE MONTH Congratulations to David Taylor of Sussex, who submitted this photo of icicles to the “Pic of the Month” contest for February. David has won a Movie Pass (for two, including drinks & popcorn), compliments of Ossekeag Publishing “Sunrises & Sunsets” is the theme for March. Karl’s tips - Shoot before and after and often. Before a sunrise and after a sunset is the magical blue hour where, if it is a clear sky it will be a wonderful cobalt blue as opposed to the cerulean blue we see midday. We are often awe struck by the colours but these images still need to follow the rules of composition i.e. have some foreground and if possible middle ground object of interest. These compositional elements leads the viewer's eyes into the image - whereby making a good image great. Remember - no people or pets please, digital copies only and photos must be horizontal (landscape) not vertical (portrait). Only photos relating to the current theme will be considered. Submissions are to be emailed, as attachments, to editorial@ossekeag.ca and must be received by the 25th of each month. Contest winner will be notified by email when selection is made and vouchers must be picked up within 30 days. Happy shooting!! 0037

The family of the late

The overwhelming support for our family following the death of Ellen is beyond words. As soon as people became aware of Ellen’s accident, we were flooded with concern, caring, and support. That has continued on after Ellen’s passing, and we are deeply grateful for it.

Philip George Crossman, wish to express their thanks to Sherwood’s for their compassion and support. A special thank to Otty Forgrave for his eulogy. Our love to family and friends for their many acts of kindness and care at home.

God Bless.

Thank You

I would like to thank my family and friends for holding an 80th Birthday celebration for me at the Legion. The cards and well wishes were great, especially the hugs. I am now creating a bucket list for my next 80 years. Again, thank you.

Douglas McLean

Thank you to those who brought food, visited, called, sent cards and notes, made supportive donations and worked at promoting Ellen’s Law. These actions show your loving thoughts. A Jewish proverb states: “As soap is to the body, so laughter is to the soul.” From your response, we know that you received some of that soap. It’s heartening to know that so many people got to share some of Ellen’s positive energy, and received her driving encouragement to challenge themselves. Ellen will be remembered for her laughter, her exuberance for life, and her ability and determination in cycling. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

ARBING EQUIPMENT - COMMUNITY STRONG

Bill Arbing, and his business partner, Bob Hutton first opened the doors to Arbing Equipment in 1965, quickly becoming the community’s go-to dealership for farming equipment. The family owned and operated business has been a part of the community since that time, and the business

has flourished, moving to a new location on Aiton Road in the 1980’s. Under the leadership of Bill Arbing’s daughter, Pam Arbing-Northrup, Arbing Equipment now employs 12 staff members, including in-house and on the road mechanics, a dedicated service team, and three salesmen.

Congratulations Arbing Equipment!

A devastating fire one year ago on February 21 2016, threatened to derail Arbing’s history, however; thanks to Arbing-Northrup’s determination and the assistance of the community, including staff members, clients, customers and neighbors, the company has persevered. Pam Arbing-Northrup is thrilled to be moved into her new building and says the business is truly back, and stronger than ever. It has been a year of highs and lows as the community of Sussex rallied together to support their local dealership in its time of need. During the after-math of the fire, ArbingNorthrup was overwhelmed with the amount of support received. Every member of her staff, whether employed for 25 years or six months, arrived that fateful morning and stayed to help in any way possible. Neighbors pitched in and offered warm meals

to the staff and volunteers during clean-up and salvage operations and many “tail-gate parties” were enjoyed. On reminiscing over the chaotic and stressful days following the fire, Arbing-Northrup remarked she was surprised in some ways by the amount of support received, considering the recent loss of Poley’s ski lodge and the closing of the Potash Mines; however she noted that being neighborly is intrinsic to the community as a whole, stating “That’s Sussex”. Alantra Leasing provided mobile office units and washrooms and within three days, the staff was back at work, in slightly cramped quarters but with high hopes for the future. Despite the limitations imposed by working out of a five office-room trailer and being limited to the use of one mechanic’s bay, rather than four, customer service remained a top priority to the team. Arbing-Northrup worked with the

insurance adjustor to ensure that all local suppliers and contractors were used during the rebuilding process. EJ Cunningham provided storage for equipment and completed demolition approximately three months following the fire. Scribner Construction and Renovation, Right Switch Electric, Styles Plumbing, Riteway Heating and Kings County Computer Repair

were involved in the building and outfitting of the new office. space, the parts and service counters are clean and spacious, and the mechanics are pleased to be operating out of four bays again. Although the investigation into the fire remains open, Arbing-Northrup and her staff are eager to put the past behind them and continue with the Arbing Equipment legacy as the Sussex and surrounding area Case-IH dealer. On January 23 2017, ArbingNorthrup and her staff moved into the new building and quickly settled in. In its place of honour on Arbing-Northrup’s desk is the plaque received by her father during his employment with “International Harvester” during the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. The plaque was on ArbingNorthrup’s desk in the old building, survived the fire to take up residence in the temporary offices and is now at home in the new building, a little piece of history tying the family

and business ever closer together. Pam Arbing-Northrup and the staff of Arbing Equipment would like to invite you to the Grand ReOpening/Customer Appreciation Day on March 18, 2017 from

10:00am to 2:00pm. A lunch of ham, veggies and jacket potatoes; many of Arbing Equipment’s representatives and suppliers will be in and musical entertainment may be provided, space permitting.

UNFILTERED PINOT NOIR; A GRAPE VARIETY LOVED BY ALL Pinot Noir is one of the great noble grape varieties of the world. Today it is grown all over the world but it’s true home is in Burgundy, France where it is the grape responsible for some of the world’s most expensive wines. It is also one of the three grape varieties in true Champagne. A few of the reasons for the popularity of Pinot Noir is that being a very thin skinned grape, it produces wines that are light, delicate with low tannin. This makes it a very approachable and versatile wine. Secondly, when grown in cooler climates which allow its more delicate aromas and flavours to shine, it can be very complex and interesting! Pinot Noir grows differently in different climates. In cooler climates it produces wines that are more earthy, complex and elegant, whereas in hotter climates it can ripen too quickly and produce wines that are overly jammy and lacking complexity. Some of the best regions to look for when buying a good quality Pinot Noir

are, Burgundy, France, New Zealand, Oregon, Washington State and Canada. Because it is such a fickle grape variety to grow you will seldom see Pinot Noir sold as a bulk or bargain wine. That being said, price alone is not in indicator of quality. There are some really great Pinot Noir’s available at a decent price, there are also some terribly sweet, overly jammy Pinots as well. Below I have listed some good ones As I mentioned previously, Pinot Noir is very versatile, this is very true especially when it comes to food and wine pairing. Due to its light body and tannins it should never be paired with big bold dishes that would overpower it. Serve it instead with Smoked Salmon, BBQ Chicken, Mushroom Risotto, Pan Seared Duck Breast, Picnic Ham, and mild to medium cheeses. Pinot Noir is one of the most interesting wines to do in a vertical tasting, because they can be so different from each other.

Some are more old world style while others are new world. Here are some great value Pinot Noirs to try at around $30 or less: Louis Latour Burgundy, France $31.99; Jeffelin Bourgogne, France $31.79; Joie Farm, BC Canada $21.49; Matua Pinot Noir, New Zealand $20.99; Mud House Pinot Noir, New Zealand $2.79; Belle Glos Meiomi Pinot Noir, California $30.79; Mark West Pinot Noir, California $19.29; Smoking Loon Pinot Noir, California $17.29. 0042

Going into her 9th year as a small business owner, Kelly Anderson is very grateful to be doing what she loves. She claims her continued success is a combination of excellent staff, who share her philosophy for top notch service, and commitment to quality end product. This past year she acquired the WINEXPERT line, which fits in nicely with her VINECO Series. This has enabled her to offer an amazing line-up of delicious fruit wines, dessert wines, Ltd release wines, as well as red, white and blush wines.

10% Off SELECTED Wine and BEER kits from March 6-11

In December of 2016 an expansion/renovation was completed which doubled her bottling capacity for customers. This has proven handy for both Kelly and staff to make bottling times more flexible. It is, and continues to be, a very relaxed, happy place to come bottle your wine.

Once again, Kelly thanks her customers and staff for their loyalty and continued support. Cheers.
