Well... I haven’t heard back from a single solitary woman in all of our readership area who agrees that a tractor is sexy. But... the other day I was out working in the woodlot doing some backhoeing when all of a sudden as I swing the bucket around, there she is!! Less than fifty feet away, she is staring at my tractor with adoration in her big brown eyes!! She is obviously captivated by the tractor, as was I with her as she was simply beautiful. Here I was dreaming that surely, Sussex, Petitcodiac, Salisbury or may be even Norton would hold the woman of my dreams, but no, I found her in my own backyard. So we chatted for a bit, but she wouldn’t tell me her name, so I decided with her doe like eyes that I would call her Jane, Jane Doe. So while I am working away, Jane is joined by a friend and now I have two admirers. At first I am thinking that they are just out to admire me and my tractor but I quickly discover that they have another agenda. It says in our Working Woodlot best practices manual that cutting hardwoods in the fall makes excellent browse for the deer population, and sure enough they both started munching down on some Grey Birch that I had cut the day before. Wow!! It is always nice when you try something that you have read from a book, to discover that it actually works. It was like that last year too, when I encountered Mrs Bear, I wondered a bit and then checked out our woodlot management plan and there it was “Suitable habitat for deer, something, something and bear�. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. Thanks Neil!! I also, read the plan through a couple of more times just to confirm that the property wasn’t suitable for elephants, lions, tigers, and crocodiles, but no we are safe from those critters. The only dangerous species that was not identified was “Cranky Old Woman� and believe me, I have had a few encounters with that one. I need to wrap this up because Jane and I have another date for this afternoon, and I have promised that I would take her out to dinner for a little fresh birch. 0001

DUFFLEY, MARK GEORGE (1958-2013)

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Mark George Duffley on October 3, 2013, age 55, of Kiersteadville, NB, husband to Lynn Ann (Jennings) Duffley. Mark was born in Saint John on April 23, 1958, the son of George and Rita (Buckley) Duffley. Mark is survived by his wife, Lynn Ann; daughters, Vanessa, Mariah and Kirstin; father and mother, George and Rita Duffley of Quispamsis; father-inlaw and mother-in-law, Cecil and Gloria Jennings of Grand BayWestfield; brothers Alan of Quispamsis, Owen and Kelley of Fall River, NS, Noel and Wendy of Rockland, ON; sisters Alberta and Paul Mercer of Saint John, Julie and Bob Johnston of Sault Ste. Marie, ON, and Carol Duffley of Lakeside, NS; brother-inlaw Gordon Jennings of Saint John and sister-in-law Dianne Jennings of Grand Bay-Westfield; several nephews, nieces and cousins. Mark was predeceased by his daughter Rachael. Mark was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle and friend. As a young man Mark was active in his parish as an altar boy. He was an enthusiastic football and hockey player and a graduate of KVHS in 1976. Mark was also a talented bike rider and enjoyed off-road four wheeling in his Jeep. Mark completed the NBCC carpet laying course and improving on what he learned, also installed tile and hardwood flooring. After a few years of experience, Mark became self-employed and often provided employment to family and friends. In 1991, he changed professions and became a licensed electrician and joined the brotherhood of IBEW Local 502. Mark was an accomplished self-taught carpenter, painter and plumber; there were no limits to his abilities or the quality of his craftsmanship. Mark married Lynn Ann in 1985 and started his family of four beautiful daughters, moving to the shores of Belleisle Bay in 1989. He shared with them and others his love of boating, skiing, swimming, fishing and biking. Mark was extremely proud of his daughters and their academic and varsity sports achievements; evidenced by his unique voice and whistles of encouragement always heard above the crowd. As a proud owner of a Harley Davidson Street Glide 2012, Mark was eager to take anyone willing on a joyous ride. Several hundred family members and friends attended the Celebration of Mark’s Life on October 7, 2013, where the funeral procession began at Sherwood’s Funeral Home and Life Tribune Centre in Norton to the Belleisle Community Centre in Springfield, NB. Officiating over the Memorial Service of Christian Burial was Father Donald F. Breen and Reverend Robert A. Salloum. Violinist Chris Buckley performed wonderfully during the processional and recessional. Pallbearers were Alan Duffley, Owen Duffley, Noel Duffley, Gordon Jennings, David Merrithew and Doug Chown. Father Breen delivered the greeting and opening prayer, followed by the Gospel and the First Reading. Pallbearers told many memorable stories of Mark, and his daughters prepared a photo slide show, including Mark’s favourite songs; Forever And For Always, Just Fishin’, I Believe In Angels and You Can Let Go Now Daddy. Alan Duffley led the Prayers of the Faithful and Rev. Salloum finished with the Lord’s

Prayer, followed by the closing with Father Breen. Assistance to the memorial service was provided by Doug Boone (sound) and Kim Giddens (technical). Attendees were encouraged to enjoy a token of remembrance, a Quality Street Chocolate, Mark’s favourite candy. The family recession was flanked by an Honour Guard of the BRHS Ladies Soccer Team and Coach Giddens. A private interment followed at the Kiersteadville Cemetery. A private reception for family and friends was very thankfully hosted by Faye and Mike Totton at the Duffley home. The IBEW Local 502 presented Mark’s family with a Holy Bible in memory of Mark and his strong work ethic and service to the brotherhood. Lynn Ann, Vanessa, Mariah and Kirstin are sincerely thankful for the love, sympathy, donations, foodstuffs, memorial preparation, cards, visitations and participation at the service, and especially grateful for their extended families, the Tottons, IBEW Local 502, the Dept of Healthy and Inclusive Communities, the Canadian Cancer Society and the Sherwoods. Greatly appreciated are the donations to the Rachael Dawn Duffley Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Greater Saint John Community Foundation and the condolences made through sherwoodsfuneralhome. com.

RANDLES, WILLIAM CHARLES (BILL) Bill Randles, husband of the late Hazel (Darrah) Randles, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on October 2, 2013, at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre. Born in East Riverside-Kingshurst on December 20, 1930, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Warman) Randles. An auto mechanic by trade, Bill operated an Esso service station in the North end of Saint John for 15 years and continued to work as a mechanic until his retirement in 1999. He and his wife Hazel resided in Red Head for several years, and later in Nauwigewauk and Quispamsis. Bill loved to golf and could be found on the course any morning enjoying a game with his good friends John Steele, John Marr and Dr. Jack Waite. He was a long-time member of the Riverside Golf and Country Club, the Nauwigewauk Darlings Seniors Club, and prior to moving to the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre, attended Quispamsis United Church. Bill played hockey in his youth and later was a coach in the EastWest Suburban Hockey League. He was a loyal Boston Bruins fan and never gave up trying to convert his Montreal Canadiens son-in-law, Paul. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Randles (Paul Owen) of Hampton, son Tim (Nadine) of Richmond BC, brother John Randles of Dartmouth NS, brothers-in-law Alex (Barb) Darrah of Long Creek, Bobby (Sharon) Darrah of Oromocto, Archie (Rita) Darrah and Johnnie Darrah of Chipman; sisters-in-law Carrie (Ray) Vince, Quispamsis, Vera Protz, Marylou (Randy) Dickinson and Mary Darrah, both of Chipman, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Bill was pre-deceased by an infant daughter in 1963, his son William in 2001, as well as sisters Evelyn McPhee, Helen Norman, and Audrey Smith. Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis, visiting was held on Saturday October 4th and Sunday, October 5th from 2:00-4:00 and 7:009:00pm. The Funeral Service was held from Quispamsis United Church, 372 Hampton Road, on Monday at 1:00pm. Interment took place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Dr. V. A. Submitted by Phyllis Corbett The lovely fall weather may have made all of us long for summer but the pace here at SRHS is far from lazy summer days. Our students are engaged in a variety of learning experiences. Here are but a few examples. In Madam Belliveau’s French Immersion Language Arts classes, they have a round table discussion every two weeks on a set topic, such as a current events item or a subject relevant to teens. They sit in a circle and have discussions and debates in French. Students get to be heard and also practice speaking French. They really like it and have great talks. In grade 9 French Immersion Language Arts, students are working from a new curriculum, and have been asking family members and friends to tell them a story of an event in their own lives that required for them to have courage. Students will be preparing a Photo story presentation which will inspire them by the challenges overcome by the people they know and love. In Mr. Brad Goodwin’s class the students are improving their band saw proficiency with a project where the students are making wooden piggy banks. Once completed, they will be doing a stop animation video. In Ms. Lindsay Mercer’s Biology 113 class, students have created Cell Models for their in class Science Fair. Animal and plant cells were depicted using such diverse materials such as Styrofoam, candies and even a cake. In Mr. Luke Hopper’s Finance and Workplace Math, students will be going outside with homemade clinometers to measure the angles of elevation of some objects such as the school, and the trees and will use the data to calculate the height of each without actually measuring. Here are some upcoming dates: November 7 – SRHS Variety Show sponsored by Grad Class; November 8 - Post Secondary Fair & Remembrance Day Assemblies; November 14-16 - The Importance of Being Ernest, a three act comedy; November 28 - Parent Teacher evening meetings 4:30-7:00pm; November 29 Parent Teacher 9:00- 11:30am. The Spring Musical April 14- 19 will be Beauty and The Beast. Ms. Corbett, Ms. Hill, Ms. Smidt and the many members of the production team are excited about this huge and colourful show. We tell children every day that they have the power within them to change the world, to make it a better place for their families, friends, strangers and themselves. But how can children do this? Children do not have access to money to purchase medications, clothing or groceries. Nor are they merchants, owning these types of products, with the authority to give them away. They do not have cars to transport those in need and they do not hold political offices that mandate social, financial or political policies. What children have is their innocence, enthusiasm and unique perspective on how the world operates. I have an apple. You are hungry. I will share my apple with you. 60 Elementary students at Cambridge-Narrows Community School will be focusing this year on developing respectful behaviours. In the third year of the RESPECT Project, partners Oromocto Superstore and Good Samaritan Food Bank, support students in developing their greater self. To date, Oromocto Superstore has donated $1550 worth of gift cards to the program. These gift cards have purchased over $2000 worth of food. This year’s contribution is $550 in gift cards. Students are practicing acting in respectful ways because what they do have control over is how they will choose to act. When teachers and peers catch students acting respectfully, they will award a RESPECT BUCK. On October 23 10:30am at the school, students will pool those RESPECT BUCKS to purchase food from our makeshift “superstore” and donate it to the Good Samaritan Food Bank. LAST BUT NOT LEAST! As the gardening season draws to a close there are a number of very important jobs that should be done if the joys of next spring are to be enjoyed to the full. Perhaps the most critical activity should be to bring in the bulbs, corms and tubers that will perish if they are left in the ground over winter; these include Gladioli, Dahlias, Crocosmia, (with the exception of Lucifer that seems to enjoy the cold, possibly a nice change from the fiery furnace that the name is associated with), and Canna lilies. By now their foliage will most probably look pretty withered due to the frost, they should be dug up and the foliage removed to within three inches of the base, careful drying over several days or weeks should be done where they will be protected from any more frosts; it’s best to brush off any earth and to divide large clumps into more manageable sizes. All of these can be stored in a cool dry frost free home until next spring, even though the plan is to keep them fairly dry, a regular check up during winter, about every six weeks, will weed out any that show signs of mould and present the opportunity to add a little spritz of water if they become too wizened. A dusting of sulphur powder will usually prevent the mould from forming. With the beautiful Indian summer that we are enjoying it may be necessary to bring out the mower again, this has the double advantage of tidying up the grass and chopping up the leaves that are late to fall. Once all the leaves are down it is much easier to see where one should be lopping and pruning and as long as the tree or bush is only reduced by a third of its branches, all will be well and some first class shaping can take place. This is also a good time to anchor some of the lower branches to promote the growth of new plants next spring, particularly good for Forsythia and the currant bushes. Any new roses that were planted this season would benefit from a little winter protection and if the rose was planted with the grafted part above ground this will be vital. An easy way to do this is to take some old boards about six inches deep and fashion a wee box to surround the stem of the bush out to about eight or ten inches; the boards can be held together ‘Red Green’ fashion, with duct tape and then the box should be filled with compost or some decent earth. Come spring it’s an easy matter to restore the boards to the shed for the next fall and to spread the good earth around the area. Most Azaleas will winter quite well but it won’t hurt to pamper any new chaps by the same method. Rhododendrons, being of the evergreen persuasion can be badly damaged by the winter winds if they are in an exposed situation and many people find it advantageous to provide some protection by means of a light burlap wrap supported by stakes around the perimeter of the plant....but not covering the top. If you wish to ‘cover’ plants against the ravages of winter (I don’t and they seem to survive well), make sure that the ground is well frozen before applying the ‘cover’, the purpose is to prevent the ground from thawing out during our unpredictable weather, not to keep the darlings warm! Have a great rest from all the manual labour, tuck into a few good books on gardening and wait eagerly for the return of the seed catalogues in late winter. Blessings, Betty. 0052

KIDS SAY THE DARNDEST THINGS Some of you, like myself, may remember Art Linkletter’s television program where he would ask youngsters questions to elicit their “cute” answers. Others may remember Bill Cosby doing the same on a similar show in the 1990’s. Anyone who has lived with kids will recognize conversations like the following: Our eldest grandchild is amazing quick with the comeback, even though she is only seven. Perhaps this is because it is the only way she can survive, given the amount of time she spends with her Grumpy. A few days ago she was in the car with us on the way to Saint John and I listened to the following conversation: KID: Grumpy, are you speeding? GRUMPY: Maybe a little. What are you a traffic cop? KID: Yes. GRUMPY: Well get out . . . I don’t want a traffic cop in the back seat. KID: I don’t want a criminal in the front seat! Score: KID one, GRUMPY zero. A few days later, I was having a discussion with her about money. There is a computer game she enjoys which includes the opportunity to “work” for points/coins, which can then be used to buy items such as clothing, drives or pets. It is great not only for basic math concepts, but also the real world experience of working and spending and then not being able to buy something else because you just spent all your money on new boots! Somehow the conversation reached the point where I explained, “money doesn’t grow on trees”. The kid, as always was quick to reply: “It used to”. ME: I don’t think so; I’ve never seen it. KID: Yes it did, because money used to be made from paper and paper comes from trees. Can’t fault that logic! English proverb ~ "The soul is healed by being with children."
