I have worked in customer service in one capacity or another since I turned 16 years old. My first “real” job was at a little kiosk in the Sussex Mall serving snacks and treats. I quickly learned that being on the other side of the counter was not the glamorous occupation I had pictured. Aside from providing customer service to a public that could occasionally be demanding, I was also expected to perform “menial” labour such as mopping and cleaning grills. From there, I worked in a bakery, as a cashier, a day camp counselor and as a server. The skills and life lessons learned on these jobs are invaluable and I continue to use them on a daily basis. One of the first lessons I learned at the tender age of 16 was that the customer was not always right- but you must address any situation that arises professionally, always treating the client with dignity and respect. When I began my career in legal office administration I foolishly thought that my customer service days were a thing of the past, however it wasn't long before I realized that I would need every lesson learned from my previous jobs. Working in a law office is a balancing act between managing deadlines, processing paperwork and helping clients. As in any other customer service position, the client is the most important factor in running a successful law office and those early lessons in customer service proved to be priceless. I will forever be grateful to the wonderful educators I encountered in my various positions. Whether the individual was an experienced co-worker providing

tips and tricks for coping with stressful situations or a “demanding” employer that required a job be performed to their specifications regardless of how I felt about the task, the life lessons continue to benefit me both at home and in the office. The skills I developed and the lessons I gained are as essential to me now as any education I gained through my formal schooling. I would never have imagined when scrubbing toilets or standing on my feet for 10 hours at a time that a job in the service industry was anything less than a means to an end. Now I understand how important each position was to my individual growth. Much as some countries have mandatory military service following high school, I believe that we should require our youth to spend at least one year serving the general public. The patience, coping skills, and understanding of other people’s perspective and needs would prove to be invaluable tools both at an institute for higher learning and in any future career. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter- letters to the editor are always welcome! 0001

CHORAL FEST 2017 Every year, singers from across New Brunswick and around the region gather at the New Brunswick Choral Federation’s Choral Fest to rehearse and perform a major work under a leading conductor and music educator. Numbering as many as 100 singers, Choral Fest has been New Brunswick’s premier choral event for adult singers for more than 35 years. This year, registrants will gather in Saint Andrews, NB from October 20 - 22, to rehearse and perform the Poulenc Gloria under clinician Dr. Matthew Leese. Two well-known and much-loved New Brunswick musicians, Saint John organist Richard Kidd and Saint John-born soprano Jessica McCormack, will perform the Gloria with the Choral Fest Massed Choir. The New Brunswick Choral Federation and the St. Andrews Arts Council are excited to bring Choral Fest to St. Andrews for the first time. The combination of one of classical music’s most beautiful and respected works and one of New Brunswick’s most beautiful tourist destinations

will make this year’s Choral Fest one to remember. Information available at: nbcfsite. wordpress.com/choral-fest, 506-4782875 or nbchoralfed@gmail.com. Registration deadline: Friday, September 29. 4639

AROUND & ABOUT ALWAYS LEARNING! Having passed another birthday milestone since my last Tides appearance, I got to thinking of how much I still delight in learning new things about the West Side, where I grew up and have lived all but a few years of my life. I was a First Street North Ender for five year when I first married, but I really only slept there as I remained rooted in the west through involvement in Scouting and church activity on the “other side of the harbour,” as my wife referred to it, being an East Ender before I dragged her over to my side, to a new home, on Montreal Avenue in 1971. Now, back to our topic of learning new things! Not long ago, Joan Pearce pointed out the image of Glooscap on a rock face near False Island in the Reversing Falls. For some reason, having written a good number of stories about the falls, and having led numerous tours that never missed the

falls, I had not seen Glooscap’s face on the rock. I know about his club, (Split Rock) which he used to break Big Beaver’s dam, and I knew the islands that remain in the falls were part of Big Beaver’s dam, but I had no idea about the actual image of Glooscap. Now Tides rarely uses images with my short columns, but I have sent one anyway, and if it does not appear here, well, I know they will include it on their web site in some magical way I do not pretend to understand. Once you have seen the image, next step is to look for the actual rock face image. I think it is best seen is from Wolastoq Park, which the Irving’s have developed where Centracare stood. As a bonus, there are Albert Deveau carvings of Big Beaver and Glooscap (spelled KOLUSKAP there) as you look out over the area for the ancient carving in those very old rock formations that hem in the St. John

River at the Reversing Falls. Even if it is not in Saint John West, as summer slips away, take time to make a discovery yourself of some feature of our community that is new to you, and then enrich others by sharing it with them as Joan did with me. 0004 See photo at ossekeag.ca

LIVE WELL RESILIENCE “The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.” ~ Nelson Mandela. Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” It’s likely we all will face losses, challenges, disappointments, failures, traumatic events, and/or rejections. This begs the question: “Why do some people heal, accept, or deal with these life events while others are crippled?” From my research, I found some characteristics of resilient people: Resilient people accept that recovery or healing is dependent on them, not on others; They have good self-esteem and personal goals; They believe life is meaningful; Past successes help with confronting current challenges; They have patience, humor, and optimism; Change is accepted as part of the human experience; They can ask for help when needed; They have formed supportive and nurturing relationships; They have

faith in something beyond themselves. In my practice, I notice that those who seem to deal with and heal from adversity are those who have strong spiritual beliefs, whether they attend a Church or are part of a faith community. Their faith gives them strength and comfort, and they view failures as learning opportunities. Another important attribute of resilient people is that they are flexible. Think about trees and how they flex and bend in storms; to do otherwise would likely result in breaking. So, life may bend us but it can only break us if we are not able to bend to the challenging winds of life. Yasmin Mogahed wrote: “Resilience means you experience, you feel, you fail, you hurt. You fall. But, you keep going.” Remember the Timex ad that stated: “it takes a licking and keeps on ticking?” Resilient people face challenge and change with determination and faith that this, too, shall pass. The American Psychological Association recommends: letting ourselves experience strong emotions, recognizing

that there may be times when we need to avoid experiencing them so we can continue functioning; face problems, have an action plan; take time to rest and reenergize; able to ask for help; seek out loved ones for nurturing, support and encouragement. Life is like a river with its twists and turns; successful navigation is dependent upon having a plan; having trusted guides to help with navigation around obstacles; having perseverance and trust in one’s abilities.
