As Kenny and Dolly sang, “it’s Christmas Time again, another year has come and gone, and I can’t help but wonder how the old folks are at home”. I might not be heading home with bells on, but I do love the idea behind the song. Whether your family is near or far, related by blood or built around friends, this time of year, especially, it’s nice to reach out and touch the special people in your life. Kevin, Emma and I would like to take this opportunity to send holiday greetings and well wishes to the people in our communities, our advertisers and readers, our staff and their families. Whether you are celebrating Chanukah, Christmas, or Kwanza, we wish you all the best for a safe and happy holiday season, filled with laughter, 0001 good company and great food.

This is not a normal grief support group – it is a social get together both online and face-to-face. It's where women who have lost a loved one share their tears and learn to laugh again. It's about healing and learning to have fun as we get back on our feet. We sometimes have guest speakers, games or just about anything could be happening. No invitation is necessary, just bring a friend and a potluck dish to share. A special meal with friends is a gift of healing. There are no fees and no obligations – just new friends to meet the first Wednesday of every month. We meet at Brenan's Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John West from 5:00-8:00pm. For more information contact Mary Francis by email at mary@thesisterhoodof widows. com. G176

From our readers CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS Growing up my husband and I celebrated Christmas with very different traditions. My family was small, we tended to stay just the five of us for most of the holidays. Christmas Eve was full of pizza, chocolate treats, chips, pop, opening that one present before bed and Chevy Chase’s Christmas antics. Christmas day brought a slow morning, opening gifts with the radio playing, snacking on Christmas cookies, and enjoying each other’s company. The same old jokes were told, and new ones made. Christmas dinner was held at our home, our grandparents coming in the late afternoon and staying until early evening. My husbands’ holidays were much bigger, louder and busier. It kicked off with a Christmas Eve turkey dinner for family up to 20 or more! Family all stayed together at his Nana’s house when he was a young child. As he grew older, everyone came to his home,

staying late into the night wrapping gifts and being together. Christmas morning was rushed, as they all got out the door for a big Christmas breakfast back at Nana’s. The family spent the day visiting, with usually another party in the evening and then on to more family dinners on the 26th. In the beginning of our relationship, neither of us wanted to give up our version of Christmas; the traditions ran deep and were loved by all. The first years as a couple we split for Christmas, saying goodbye on Christmas Eve and coming back together late Christmas night. Gradually, we realized things needed to change. We were expecting our first child, my husband’s son from a previous relationship needed more from us, and spending Christmas Eve apart had us missing each other more and more. The year our first child was born I made the first change, missing Christmas Eve at Mom and Dad’s to eat turkey

with my husbands’ family. It was hard. It was weird. I both hated and loved it. The next few Christmases had us struggling to find a happy medium for both our traditions and expectations. Now, four boys and 12 year later, I think we finally have our Christmas figured out. We have lost a few loved ones along the way, and this in itself has caused the biggest changes to the traditions we both held so dear. As I prepare our house and family to celebrate again, I am watching and sympathizing with a new understanding as my step son and his new family try to find their way through the holiday maze. His Christmas of his youth has already ceased to exist and was reworked over the past twelve years. This year they have added a new baby boy to our family and will have to work hard to see what kind of traditions and Christmas will be best for them. Submitted by Rebecca Stewart. 0050

Christmas Recipes TIM’S DRESSING 3/4 of a cup finely chopped onion 1 1/2 tsp. sage 1 1/2 cups chopped celery & leaves 1 tsp. thyme 1 cup butter salt & pepper 9 cups soft bread , cubed Cook onion & celery in butter in skillet ‘til tender. Stir in 1/3 of the bread crumbs. Turn into bowl, add remaining ingredients & stir. Cook in 350

degree oven about 1 hour; stirring occasionally. Mushrooms and apple can be added with the onion & celery. ENJOY !!! CHOCOLATE BALLS 1 cup peanut butter 1/4 cup butter - softened 1 cup icing sugar 2 cups Rice Krispies 1 cup coconut Vanilla

Mix these ingredients & form into balls then put in ‘fridge to chill. Melt 6oz.pkg chocolate chips & 2 tbsp parowax until thin. You may need to add more parowax. Dip balls in above mixture and turn to coat. This works well with a spoon. Rest on waxed paper or parchment paper to harden. Keep in a cool place or in refrigerator. HOLIDAY TRADITIONS Our family has had an outdoor holiday tradition that switches up every year. Originally it started when my husband thought he’d give me a little pre-Christmas Day prep time by taking our children out to the woods for breakfast over a fire on Christmas Eve morning. They’d pack up eggs and bacon, beans and fried potatoes, with juice and the coffee perk and off they’d go for a trek to a new place every year. We live in the country so any place is fair game: top of a mountain, along

a stream bed, in the deep woods, somewhere on our own property or not. But after just that first year, I decided I wanted to go with them. So for over two decades, we’ve added neighbours, nieces and nephews, a young dating couple who were under our wing at the time. My oldest daughter has since built her own family and it includes all of them, of course, but on various years, it’s included her friends and extended family from as far away as Oregon and

California. It’s still breakfast food but the menu changes with our visitors’ choices (such as biscuits and gravy for our southern guests) and could now extend beyond lunch time, depending on who’s coming and from how far away. Of course, now it takes up more time rather than saving me time but it’s totally worth it. Submitted by Joan Graham. 0050

BLACK BEARS GIRLS SOFTBALL

2018 SAINT JOHN WINTER COURSES New Year’s Resolution

Learn Something New!

Clip this ad for easy reference when you are ready to enrol.

!

The purpose behind forming the Black Bears Youth Softball is to create an additional opportunity for young girls to play travel softball. We are forming a five year commitment to our U12 girls, with the theory that this program will prepare these young girls for the opportunity to potentially compete for a University Scholarship, Canada Games or the Canadian National Team. Although we are not promising that any of these young ladies will receive a scholarship, play on the Canada Games etc., by playing with our organization they will be given every opportunity to prepare themselves for a tryout while being showcased in every aspect of softball. Black Bears Softball has a large coaching staff that will make sure every detail of the game is covered and that each girl is given the time she deserves. In total we will have six or seven on field coaches during practices, with the team also having a team Doctor. The number one priority behind Black Bears Softball is to provide girls in the Province of New Brunswick, regardless of where they are from or to what organization they belong, with the opportunity to be showcased in some form. We have aligned ourselves with great mentors from the University of Maine who will help us and mentor us on this journey. Black Bears has also invited the University of Maine to hold a Prospect Camp in the Spring of 2018 where we will be looking for girls from the age of 1417. The prospect camp will be inviting a total of 30 girls and putting them through drills before concluding with a game. This camp will be separate from the Black Bears Team and will provide an important opportunity to showcase the talent of young ladies in the Province of New Brunswick. This team will not only learn softball but will also learn how to be great young adults, preparing them for life beyond softball. We want to thank all of our sponsors who are helping making this dream become a reality. Please look us up on Facebook at Black Bears Girls Youth Softball and also on the web at blackbearsyouthsoftball.ca. See you in the summer. 4801
