Kevin and I are so excited to welcome our daughter, Emma Jayne Crealock, to the world! Emma was due July 15, 2017, but I expected she would be late as that seems to be the trend in my family. Imagine my surprise when I woke up at around 2:30am on July 16 with labour pains! After a long day and night of no progress, Emma was born July 17, 2017 at 4:01am by emergency C-section, weighing in at 5 lbs, 15 oz. She was so tiny, just a perfect little one arm bundle of joy. Despite the difficulties of the previous 24 hours, the moment I saw that little face everything else just faded away. I thought I was in love with my baby before… nothing prepares you for the moment when you finally meet. As any other parent can attest to, love at first sight does not begin to describe the enormity of the feelings that rush through you when your baby arrives. After spending four days in the hospital where help was just a second away, bringing baby home was a whole new experience… I don’t think the drive from Saint John ever seemed so long or dangerous. We did well though, only pulling over once to check on our precious bundle in the back seat. (I am especially proud of the fact that I only snapped at the other drivers on the road a couple of times. Kevin often laughs at my backseat-driver-road-rage.) Once Emma was tucked into her own little bassinet, Kevin settled me on the couch with strict instructions to rest. Fortunately, I had no difficulty (that night) in taking it easy as I was experiencing a whole new level of exhaustion. I wasn’t good for much more than staring at the bassinet and wondering at the fact that I was suddenly a mother. It hadn’t really sunk in until that moment when I was alone with this tiny little life for which I was now responsible. Now six weeks later, despite the sleepless nights and days where I could break down in tears because I’ve tried everything but still can’t figure out why Emma is upset, Kevin and I
still stare at our baby girl and marvel at the fact that we have been blessed with such a perfect little princess to complete our lives. He often looks and me and asks “are you sure she’s ours”, or, my personal favourite, “how did we get so lucky”….we are both in awe of the fact that we created such a sweet miracle! Kevin and I want to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Labour and Delivery Department, NICU and Maternity Ward at the Saint John Regional Hospital. To Dr. Becky and Dr. Satya, thank you for bringing Emma into this world! (I have it on good authority that I have one of the best looking C-section scars out there, so thank you as well for your impeccable stitch work). To Alana, Rachel, Lynn, Jennifer and the rest of the staff on the labour and delivery ward, thank you for answering all of our questions and for ensuring we were comfortable every step of the way. It meant a lot to me that regardless of how lost or out of control I was feeling, the ladies on the night shift, despite being runoff-their-feet busy, always had the time for a kind word, or joke. To the staff on the maternity ward and in the NICU, thank you for the care and advice, the help and support and most of all for being a part of the most incredible journey Kevin and I have taken together thus far. Until next time, thank you for all you do! 0001

CHICK’S NIGHT OUT This is not a normal grief support group – it is a social get together both online and faceto-face. It's where women who have lost a loved one share their tears and learn to laugh again. It's about healing and learning to have fun as we get back on our feet. We sometimes have guest speakers, games or just about anything could be happening. No invitation is necessary, just bring a friend and a potluck dish to share. A special meal with friends is a gift of healing. There are no fees and no obligations – just new friends to meet. Starting Wednesday, October 4. Continuing the first Wednesday of the Month from 5:00-8:00pm. At Brenan's Bay View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, Saint John West. For more information contact Mary Francis by email at mary@ thesisterhoodofwidows.com Special night - Group is going on a Mystery bus tour on Friday, October 20. 4681

LIVE WELL FORGIVING OURSELVES Carl Jung, noted psychiatrist, wrote: “If one can accept one’s sin, one can live with it. If one cannot accept it, one has to suffer the inevitable consequences.” In other words, we must embrace our failures along with our successes to stop pain and be free of regret and remorse. I submit that there are very few of us who do not have regrets about something we have done or not done. Regrets chain us to the past leaving us sad, frustrated, and disappointed. Healing requires that we accept ourselves as “perfectly imperfect,” and “masterpieces in progress.” Failure to meet unrealistic expectations of ourselves or others is labelled as failures, subject to disappointment and frustration. Over and over, messages of failure can come to mean that we are failures, not that we made mistakes and we become “human doings rather than human beings,” in the words of John Bradshaw. Success becomes measured by what we own and control.
Although acceptance of our humanity and our imperfect lives are key to a happy and satisfied life, an inability to forgive ourselves or others for being human and perfectly imperfect, can keep us from using these experiences as powerful learning opportunities. Failures give us a second chance to choose again, whether they be in our professional or personal lives. Here are some unrealistic expectations that we need to let go of if we are to be in love with our lives: Life should be fair; Opportunities will just happen; Everyone should like me; Everyone should agree with me; People should know what I am trying to say or expect; I’m going to fail anyway; Things will make me happy; I can change him/her. (Travis Bradbury, Ph.D.) Challenging these beliefs means that we recognize not everything in life is fair. We create our own opportunities by considering what we need to do to remove obstacles in our path. Not everyone will like us, sometimes for no good reason at all. Bending, folding and mutilating
ourselves to be pleasing to others does not work in the long term. We all are entitled to have opinions that are often in conflict with others; however, if we are mature enough to open our minds, we can learn and grow from conflicting opinions. It is said that as we think, so we are. If we think we are a failure, we will be. Some of the wealthiest people in the world are miserable; things don’t make one happy. And finally, we cannot change others only ourselves. So, forgive yourself for being perfectly imperfect and look for the lesson in all perceived failures. 0008

IN THE GARDEN WATER... THAT MOST PRECIOUS The life giving gift from the heavens, seems to be evading us; however the shortage of it should be keeping us mindful of its value and our responsibility in conserving it. There is no doubt that it has dramatic impact on what we are able to accomplish in the garden, with soil compacted to a concrete like substance digging is a positive chore; so what to do? Well....even though the fruit crop may not be the juiciest in history, there is still a viable crop of berries and apples and in preparation for the season ahead one can get a good start on stowing away preserves; currant jellies of all persuasions have a mighty Vitamin C content and a spoonful of the same in a mug of hot water is as good a cure / preventive measure for colds as any medication, pleasant on the taste buds and a soothing invitation to sleep! We are surrounded by all sorts of goodies in the garden and countryside
that need no heavy digging to harvest and that provide a wealth of free entertainment and lasting pleasure on a cold winter day. Now is the hour (remember that waltzy WWII song?) to gather Fir and Pine cones and the abundance of flowers, wild and tame, to create table centres and arrangements; great ideas for gifting and wonderful for crafts of many kinds. If you have access to either a Buckeye or Horse Chestnut, the sky's the limit; growing up during the war was certainly a challenge and we learned to make the best of what was available, these wonderful trees opened the door of our imaginations and we produced amazing furniture for dolls houses with the help of yarn and straight pins. Another great activity for children is the creating of miniature gardens, using the mosses and seed pods that abound in gardens, woodlands and even roadside ditches; the gathering of these things can make for a wonderful family
adventure that can be enjoyed without spending any money and of course, can be a great way of teaching the value of our natural world. Waiting .. While we wait for the skies to deliver, may we spare a thought and a prayer for those poor souls in Texas and elsewhere who have had an overdose of water and wild weather, as we count our blessings with thankfulness. Blessings. Edited for space. See full article at ossekeag.ca 0039

LOCAL WOMEN DONATE $21,200 TO CHARITY A local women's philanthropic group continues to impact its community with its 18th donation, this one in the amount of $21,200 to the Saint John Community Food Basket. The members heard very informative and impactful pitches from Mary Saulnier-Taylor, Executive Director of Coverdale Centre for Women; Sandy Maxwell, Chief Executive Officer for Bobby’s Hospice and Dave Nickerson, Vice-Chair of the Saint John Community Food Bank. Since its inception in June, 2013, 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John has now donated $432,459 to 18 local charities. Members meet for an hour to hear three 5-minute presentations by local charities that have been nominated by our members and randomly selected ahead of time. Members jointly select
one of the three presenting local charity or not-for-profit organization by way of a vote to receive the bulk donation at the end of the presentations. Each member then writes a $100 cheque to the winning organization and watches how the group’s commitment turns into a sizeable donation. The process is repeated four times a year. Each time, members get to witness how their combined donations can improve local lives when placed in the hands of deserving grass-roots agencies working to serve the local community. The Greater Saint John chapter meets again on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. For more information about 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John visit: 100womengsj.com 4686

HOPE AFTER STROKE
Olympic medalists
KENNEBEC MANOR NEWS Residents from Kennebec Manor had another awesome summer. Residents went on many river adventures in Hampton, to the Moncton zoo, had a Hawaiian party and of course our annual summer Olympics tournament. Residents were so happy to have so much sunny weather this summer. It was great! 4670
Our name is Hope after Stroke Incorporated. We are a newly founded non-profit support group for stroke and brain injury survivors, created by survivors, for survivors and caregivers. We know all too well just how difficult physically, mentally and emotionally the recovery process is after a life-changing illness. There was only one support group in the whole province and we decided we needed to do something about this! We do not want who we are, to overshadow what we are doing. As survivors we have walked in the same shoes, understand the fears, frustration and know the gap that exists between hospital to home. We are trying to fill that gap by working with the hospital and Heart and Stroke Foundation to facilitate a course called Living Stroke, a six to eight week course for stroke patients that have been rehabilitated, released and have re entered their home and community. As stroke survivors, who better to teach this course than someone who has gone through it, along with health care professionals. Our mission is to continually SEEK: support, education, empower and
kindness. To do this we are in need of survivors, volunteers, funding and experienced board members that can help us to continually grow in a positive direction for all survivors and caregivers. Any and all help that we receive from the Saint John and surrounding area is greatly appreciated. For Info: Wendy McKinnon at 506-3333131 or wrmckinnon@hotmail.com. 4679
