I have worked in customer service in one capacity or another since I turned 16 years old. My first “real” job was at a little kiosk in the Sussex Mall serving snacks and treats. I quickly learned that being on the other side of the counter was not the glamorous occupation I had pictured. Aside from providing customer service to a public that could occasionally be demanding, I was also expected to perform “menial” labour such as mopping and cleaning grills. From there, I worked in a bakery, as a cashier, a day camp counselor and as a server. The skills and life lessons learned on these jobs are invaluable and I continue to use them on a daily basis. One of the first lessons I learned at the tender age of 16 was that the customer was not always right- but you must address any situation that arises professionally, always treating the client with dignity and respect. When I began my career in legal office administration I foolishly thought that my customer service days were a thing of the past, however it wasn't long before I realized that I would need every lesson learned from my previous jobs. Working in a law office is a balancing act between managing deadlines, processing paperwork and helping clients. As in any other customer service position, the client is the most important factor in running a successful law office and those early lessons in customer service proved to be priceless. I will forever be grateful to the wonderful educators I encountered in my various positions. Whether the individual was an experienced co-worker providing

tips and tricks for coping with stressful situations or a “demanding” employer that required a job be performed to their specifications regardless of how I felt about the task, the life lessons continue to benefit me both at home and in the office. The skills I developed and the lessons I gained are as essential to me now as any education I gained through my formal schooling. I would never have imagined when scrubbing toilets or standing on my feet for 10 hours at a time that a job in the service industry was anything less than a means to an end. Now I understand how important each position was to my individual growth. Much as some countries have mandatory military service following high school, I believe that we should require our youth to spend at least one year serving the general public. The patience, coping skills, and understanding of other people’s perspective and needs would prove to be invaluable tools both at an institute for higher learning and in any future career. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter- letters to the editor are always welcome! 0001

ANNUAL MEMORIAL FLOWER SERVICE The Bayswater-Summerville Congregation of Two Rivers Pastoral Charge held their Annual Memorial Flower Service on Sunday July 23 at 2:00pm at the 150 year old Summerville United Church. This is an Annual Memorial Service where we remember and give thanks for the lives of those we have known and loved. Light refreshments and fellowship was enjoyed following the service. The Summerville United Church building has been a place of worship to residents on the Kingston Peninsula since its beginnings in the 1860’s. Originally established in 1867 as a non-denominational church, the story behind its start reflects the ongoing spirit and fellowship that has always characterized our community. Land was donated and neighbors offered their labour, time and skills to erect the quaint little church building that stands today as a testimonial to their generosity, faith and hard work. These same community values remain a guiding part of the Bayswater-

Summerville United Church Congregation. On Saturday, August 26 we will be participating in the first annual Summerville Art Festival. Summerville United Church will be the starting point for the festival and will be hosting a "pop-up art gallery" to feature the permanent works of art within the church (stained glass windows by Frans Cuppens and Paul Blaney and a Ron Howard Mural) as well as loaned works of art by former residents such as Rosamond and Ted Campbell and the Deichmann potters. 4638

LIFE BALANCE KEEP LOVE ALIVE How to Keep Love Alive in Long-Term Relationships? “Love is something you do for someone else, not something you do for yourself.” - Dr. Gary Chapman The honeymoon phase is said to last about two years. During this time, the romantic love that is deeply rooted in our psychological makeup is evident in our everyday interactions with our partner. It is during this euphoric state that we become obsessed with the other person. This ecstasy-filled stage in the relationship leads us to believe that we, as a couple, are invincible, and that our love will last forever. Eventually, however, we descend from this fantasy land. Our eyes open, and we begin to see the imperfections, the annoying mannerisms, and our partner’s capacity to hurt us. We begin a new stage of the relationship where a look can hurt and where words can crush. What emerges from this honeymoon phase is a love that requires effort, care,

With Two Locations to Serve You

discipline, patience and compromise. Dr. Chapman, author of the book The 5 Love Languages, offers a strategy to help keep love live once the honeymoon stage is long gone. The love languages that make up this strategy include: quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service and physical touch. Essentially, he states that if our partner ‘speaks’ our primary love language on a regular basis (i.e.: provides words of affirmation), then our love tank will remain full, and our capacity to deal with everyday struggles within our relationship will improve. It is very possible that one partner’s primary love language is different than the other partner’s primary love language. As a response to this, Dr. Chapman maintains that love is intentional and can be seen as an attitude (i.e.: I am with you and choose to make you happy). Consequently, he suggests that a

choice we have in our relationship is to adopt our partner’s primary love language, and to incorporate it in our daily interactions with them. Aside from helping us better deal with everyday struggles, having our significant other speak our primary language can also lead us to feel more secured, accepted and desired. It is a clear message that the other person is looking out for our best interest and is committed to our well-being. 0040

WELL RESTED WHAT DO YOU LOOK LIKE WHEN YOU SLEEP? Picture yourself sleeping. Sleeping like a baby are you? A video recording of yourself during the wee small hours might surprise or even shock you! If you have ever tried to convince someone that they snore, you’ve probably met with some resistance. Even when told by others that we snore, stop breathing or otherwise have disrupted sleep, deep down, we don’t believe them or feel they are exaggerating. What is wrong with snoring? It could indicate a more troublesome and dangerous condition: Sleep Apnea. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a very common sleep disorder. It is marked by snoring, pauses in breathing, gasping for air and daytime sleepiness. Other factors in OSA include morning headaches, a large neck, being overweight and high blood pressure. There are strong associations between untreated Sleep Apnea and Cardiovascular Disease. Those with untreated OSA are at greater risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, stroke and early death due cardiovascular problems as well as car accidents due to daytime sleepiness. Researchers have recently discovered that many of us have a mistaken impression of what goes on in our sleep. Lead Researcher, Mark Aloia and other scientists divided people with sleep apnea into 2 groups. One group was shown a video of themselves when sleeping,

the other was not. The results were very dramatic. The video group were shocked to see themselves snore, gasp, toss, turn and jolt awake out of their deep sleep. Some of the viewers became very emotional and weepy. They felt as if they were watching themselves being choked or drowning. This is exactly what sleep apnea looks like. The effect that the video had on the behavior of the group was dramatic as well. They started keeping their CPAP mask on three hours longer per night than those who had not watched a video of themselves. The scare of seeing the reality of their sleep encouraged them to stick to their treatment and lower their health risks. So if you are curious about what is happening in your sleep, prop up that video camera and hit record. You may be surprised what you see! 0038

HAMPTON 5-MILER This year’s Hampton 5-Miler road running race, which is organized by the Hampton River Runners, will take place on Sunday, September 10. This is the 17th running of the 5-Miler which is regarded by the running community as one of the premier running events in Atlantic Canada, with several mentions over the years in the Canadian Running magazine. The Hampton 5-Miler is actually three events - not just one. At 9:00am, there is a Kids’ Kilometre Fun Run for children 12 years old and younger, and 9:55am is the start time for the Three-for-Me 3km Run for youth 16 years old and younger. All of the events begin at Hampton High School. Kids’ k and 3k participants receive a T-shirt, a running bib and a Subway coupon. And they are invited to the free light lunch that takes place after the 5 -Miler. The 5-Miler begins at 10:00am. For more info, check out the hamptonriverrunners.ca website. Register online at runningroom.com or raceroster. com. Despite the low registration fee and thanks to the generosity of many private and corporate sponsors (check the back of the T-shirt!), the event has over the years raised in excess of $75000, all of which has been returned to the Hampton community to promote sports and fitness.... for such things as school sports uniforms, an elementary school climbing wall, fitness classes for seniors, and physical ed and sports equipment for local schools. See you on the first Sunday morning after Labour Day!! 4648

IN THE GARDEN Rain, rain, come & stay Brian Brett wrote that Gardening is a profession of hope..... How true, since the last really tangible downpour of rain on June 1st., my hopes have been raised by every passing dark cloud; passing being the operative word since they scudded by, dropping barely enough precious water to dampen the surface; the situation is very serious and we are powerless to make rain. However there’s quite a bit that we can do to assist our plantings to survive; it is clear that, despite Mr Trump’s protestations, this problem is here to stay! First thing to combat drought is to make sure that the soil you plant in is of the best quality possible, I mix a bag of really good black earth with half a bag of packaged manure and five good shovels worth of peat moss, mixed together and incorporated into the soil, this makes for a healthy start, adding bone meal to the bottom of the hole when planting will encourage strong roots that will reach far down for water and you are

away to the races! But what if you missed the opportunity in the spring and many plants are overstressed now? It is obvious that if you get out all the weeds ASAP, their ration of water will be available for the plants you cherish; the same soil mixture as described above can be spread around as a top dressing and is far better for the garden than Cedar mulch, when the drought is as severe as this one, believe me there’s very little moisture available to plants beneath it and the harmful pests that live under the mulch will be actively attacking the roots for their share of moisture. I do use mulch on my pathways and have checked...bone dry underneath. I have done a huge amount of pruning, (the dear chaps who pick up for Crane Mountain are considering a truck just for me!) By reducing the amount of foliage that a planting has to maintain one is also reducing dramatically the amount of water that the plant will need to survive FT

and the results of the pruning can be dramatic. I have just done a major job on my rather sad looking Magnolia and after just one week, it has burst into abundant blossoms. Roses have responded the same way, by cutting back on the older canes, they have produced new shoots loaded with buds and blooms and the rich earth mixture that now surrounds them is working its magic. LIVE WELL RESILIENCE “The greatest glory in living lies not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall.” ~ Nelson Mandela. Resilience is defined as “the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness.” It’s likely we all will face losses, challenges, disappointments, failures, traumatic events, and/or rejections. This begs the question: “Why do some people heal, accept, or deal with these life events while others are crippled?” From my research, I found some characteristics of resilient people: Resilient people accept that recovery or healing is dependent on them, not on others; They have good self-esteem and personal goals; They believe life is meaningful; Past successes help with confronting current challenges; They have patience, humor, and optimism; Change is accepted as part of the human experience; They can ask for help when needed; They have formed supportive and nurturing relationships; They have

faith in something beyond themselves. In my practice, I notice that those who seem to deal with and heal from adversity are those who have strong spiritual beliefs, whether they attend a Church or are part of a faith community. Their faith gives them strength and comfort, and they view failures as learning opportunities. Another important attribute of resilient people is that they are flexible. Think about trees and how they flex and bend in storms; to do otherwise would likely result in breaking. So, life may bend us but it can only break us if we are not able to bend to the challenging winds of life. Yasmin Mogahed wrote: “Resilience means you experience, you feel, you fail, you hurt. You fall. But, you keep going.” Remember the Timex ad that stated: “it takes a licking and keeps on ticking?” Resilient people face challenge and change with determination and faith that this, too, shall pass. The American Psychological Association recommends: letting ourselves experience strong emotions, recognizing

that there may be times when we need to avoid experiencing them so we can continue functioning; face problems, have an action plan; take time to rest and reenergize; able to ask for help; seek out loved ones for nurturing, support and encouragement. Life is like a river with its twists and turns; successful navigation is dependent upon having a plan; having trusted guides to help with navigation around obstacles; having perseverance and trust in one’s abilities.
