Wow... the fury of Mother Nature is unsurpassed this year. After weeks of above average temperatures and more rain and freezing rain than I ever want to see in January again, winter has arrived with a vengeance. Even during the winter-that-would-not-end of 2015 I don't remember having so many storm days home from work. Even Kevin stayed home! And to have it all packed into a ten day period... talk about overwhelming. At one point, I was starting to feel a little claustrophobic, which is odd considering most times I'm quite content to stay home and indulge in an day of television, reading and baking. Almost more disruptive than the storms themselves would be the cleanup that must inevitably follow; is anyone else tired of trying to lift snow over their head in an attempt to clear their driveway? I really can't complain given that Kevin and Lindsay took care of moving most of the snow from around our house. This is especially fortunate, given the fact that I barely reach five feet tall wearing my heels and the drifts at the end of the driveway following Monday's blizzard were over my head before the plow went by. We had a lot of fun trying to get the cars moved. Kevin lost one belt on the tractor while blowing the driveway clear. Lindsay stood in snow up to her waist in most places trying to clear the snow away from the doors. I crawled over the center console in my car as it was completely buried on the driver's side. I have a picture of the
imprint my rear wheel left in the snow as I imagine when I tell this story in a few years my nieces and nephews will equate it to the stories I heard growing up of my grandparents walking to school uphill both ways. We were lucky though, in all honesty. Looking around our neighborhood, it really brought home to me what an incredible community we live in. Everywhere I looked people were helping each other shovel, lending a snowblower or just generally trying to boost morale. Doorways were cleared out for elderly neighbors, groceries were delivered and people went above and beyond to make sure that no one was left wanting. My sister, who has three children under the age of nine and is expecting her fourth, told me that several of her friends stopped by to help with snow removal; a definite plus when your husband drives truck long-haul and is delayed due to weather. There is nothing like a good old fashioned Maritime winter to make me proud to call New Brunswick home. 0001

A familiar name returns to the Valley. As our thoughts turn to spring, the annual ritual that 20 plus million of us take part in – filing a tax return – also surfaces to our consciousness. Roger Haineault, founder of Help4Taxes, is back in the Valley and has opened an office, or should we say re-opened an office beside Pizza Delight. Leslie Langille, Roger’s key person kicked off the new venture, Tax-Aid, a few years ago and they have operated a couple of in-town offices – one across from his old location on McAllister Drive – this time in Parkway Mall. There is also the northend location off Somerset on Churchill by the Y, which they formerly had. What’s brought him back? “The best experience in my working life happened here in the Saint John region, and I am particularly partial to the Valley. I had a great time previously, not only at the office, but becoming part of the fabric of this community. While both my children are adults now, they played a role back in the day in our locations – working part-time during their high school days and learning how important a helpful attitude and a smiling face were to the people they would engage with, as they proceeded through life. Jennifer now is a project manager at a leading HR firm, and Rob is an engineer with a terrific local business. I look at their successes with pride, and I hope that some small part of their achievements are a result of shaking hands, answering phones and taking payments from our clients in the offices,” says Roger. While many of us remember the distinctive radio ads – “Hi – I’m Roger Haineault with Help…” or him being interviewed regularly, keeping us up-
to-date with the latest news and tips, it’s surprising to recognize just how long he’s been at this. As he said to me, “I’ve been doing tax returns for New Brunswickers just like you for more than 25 years”. So why keep this up? “Any success I enjoyed was truly a result of the people we were fortunate enough to meet who would ultimately come to work for us. I had a clear vision of the kind of service I wanted to offer – one where people would know that we actually cared about them and their personal situations. I didn’t want them to feel nickeled and dimed to death. And during that journey with Help 4 Taxes I was blessed to meet the person who really carried me and provided the true rigour to the business – Leslie Langille. I always thought that she would one day continue what we had built, when I was put out to pasture. While my name might be on the door, the business would be a pale imitation of itself without her. She’s a natural – and there is the added benefit of her son, Drew. Like my kids, Drew has done his fair share of pitching in, moving furniture and providing the occasional idea to help our marketing efforts.” What does he see for the future? “The Canada Revenue Agency has devoted resources to truly improve their electronic relationships with taxpayers. We can file a return and report back to the client that it’s been assessed almost immediately. However, this has freed up their staff to run more programs to verify compliance by all of us. While some of the correspondence we see is routine there is also much more detailed review – a scary thought
for most of us. Generally, we are able to shield the people who put their trust in us.” Any final words? “It’s apparent that no one lives forever. That’s why Leslie is moving from a stakeholder role to an active ownership position with me in the organization. She and I are on the same page. We talk daily about how best to serve. I learned a long time ago that the leader’s job is to look after his people, his people have to look after the client, and then ultimately, if you do it right, the client will look after the bottom line. In many ways, Leslie and I have grown over the years from workmates to best friends and I’m happy to see her involved with skin in the game as they say. I hope all our friends – past and current – will take the time to come and see us, and maybe give us the privilege of serving them once again.”

ROTHESAY KINGS ROTARY CLUB NEWS The world’s first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicago was formed on February 23, 1905 by Paul Harris, an attorney who wished to capture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had left in the small towns of his youth. The Rotary name derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among member’s offices. By 1921 Rotary Clubs had been formed on six continents. The organization

FLOWERS IN BLOOM AND OPEN HOUSES Is anyone else as tired of winter as I am? Don’t get me wrong! There’s something peaceful about watching a gentle snow fall and I love the way my yard looks when covered with a pristine blanket of white. However, I’m not a fan of cold temperatures or icy roads at the best of times and after having an entire season’s worth of snow arrive in a twenty-four hour period, coupled with the joy of digging out of literally several feet of snow, I am more than ready for spring temperatures and green grass. Which got me to thinking about my favourite spring pass-time, gardening. What better way to overcome the winter blues than dreaming of the smell of fresh turned earth and the colours of those first spring flowers? Every year about this time I start pouring over my Vesey’s catalogues, circling all the new blooms, bulbs and seed I want to try. I start looking at different ideas on Pinterest and wishing I could wander around one of the local nurseries. My husband, Kevin, starts reminding me of the size of my current gardens and the fact that, no, I don’t really need six new plants, because where will I put them? One thing led to another, and the Ossekeag team has decided to welcome spring with a complete overhaul of our office’s garden and yard. It seems fitting: new management, new look. Also, I get to look at all sorts of new and interesting products, and not worry about fitting said items into my garden at home. In that regard, Kevin and I would love to hear from our friends and neighbours- what would you like to see take place on the grounds of 242 Main Street? Red and white annuals to
help celebrate our great Nation’s 150th? Maybe a riot of colour and different blooms in a variety of containers? Or something calming, such as shrubbery and evergreens? Personally, I love the wild abandon of the bushes and lilies that are currently trying to overrun the driveway, but it may be time to regain control - in as much as anyone can control the freedom associated with nature. The choices are endless, and we welcome your comments. You can contact me at amanda@ossekeag. ca, Kevin at kevin@ossekeag.ca, or the Ossekeag staff at info@ossekeag.ca. Kevin and I will be hosting an open house on Saturday, June 3, from 1:004:00pm, as an opportunity to meet everyone and hear your thoughts about the garden and other upcoming ideas. We welcome you to stop into the office to share some treats, look over our garden plans, and see where the magic happens. We will also be holding our first colouring contest, so bring the whole family. All pictures submitted by children under the age of 12 will be featured on our website and Facebook page as part of our upcoming “Kids’ Corner”. Looking forward to your input as we move forward with the next stage of our adventure! 4436

PENINSULA BR #62 AWARDS TO MEMBERS
The overwhelming support for our family following the death of Ellen is beyond words. As soon as people became aware of Ellen’s accident, we were flooded with concern, caring, and support. That has continued on after Ellen’s passing, and we are deeply grateful for it. Thank you to those who brought food, visited, called, sent cards and notes, made supportive donations and worked at promoting Ellen’s Law. These actions show your loving thoughts. A Jewish proverb states: “As soap is to the body, so laughter is to the soul.” From your response, we know that you received some of that soap. It’s heartening to know that so many people got to share some of Ellen’s positive energy, and received her driving encouragement to challenge themselves.

The male, Aslan and sister, Freida are now 2.5 years old and are very active, rolling, jumping, running. They are just a bag of energy and play! Plus they are beautiful. The male lion’s roar that can be heard five miles away develops over Aslan’s first five years. I heard a little grumble sound from Aslan - could be the start of his roar? Aslan’s mane is also starting to grow. I saw some hair on his belly and shoulders. Siberian Tiger, Karma, is still with us. International Species Survival Program (SSP) will move her to a facility in Canada later this year for the Siberian Tiger conservation program. Siberian Tigers are critically endangered due to loss of habitat, illegal hunting and the horrible and illegal trafficking of tiger body parts to Asian, European and American buyers. Snow Leopard, Lexi’s homeland is the Himalayan Mountains. Her species loves snow. We want to add a big thank you to our zoo staff who are out in all winter weather every day caring for our zoo animals.

the Theatre Susan B Ganong at RNS. This year, the Concert will be held on Saturday, April 1. Helping others has always been an important part of the RNS community, and this concert is one of the most fun ways we do that. Raising money, while important, isn't the only part of what we hope to do with this event and with other events we do. The Youth For Youth concert is, at its heart, a way to bring our community together and bond over amazing music from a variety of genres, while also helping out a great cause. The performers for this concert are all students from local high schools, such as KV and Rothesay High, Saint John High, and more. We are also hoping to get more people from local schools involved in the planning of this event to turn it into a true community event. Last year's event raised over $1500 for the TRC, and we're hoping to beat that this year! Tickets will be available at the door or by calling 846-8224 and information will be posted on our Facebook page, Youth For Youth, as it becomes available. We hope to see you there on April 1! 4441

PREPARE YOUR TAX RETURN FOR FREE If your 2016 income was under $30,000 for singles or $40,000 for couples, and if your tax situation is straightforward you can take advantage of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, which has been available for 45 years. The Program uses CRA-approved software and volunteer preparers to calculate your tax refund or balance, at no cost to you. Returns for 2013 to 2016 can be sent directly over the Internet, resulting in faster processing. Older returns (as far back as 2007) have to be printed and mailed. We can even adjust prior-year returns - for example, you might want to back-date a disability credit claim
that has been certified by your doctor. This year’s clinic will take place Tuesdays from March 7 - April 18 from 9:00am-12:00noon and 1:00-3:00 pm at St. Paul’s Parish Centre on the Rothesay Common. There are no appointments if you cannot wait, you have the option of completing an information sheet and leaving your slips for processing later (normally by the next week). Further information on the Volunteer Program, including locations and dates of other clinics in the Greater Saint John area, can be had by visitin: cra-arc.gc.ca or calling toll-free 1-855-516-4405. 4442

WELL RESTED PREGNANCY AND SNORING: A CAUSE FOR CONCERN Pregnancy is such an exciting time. The marvelous changes to your body, the preparations for your home and hopes for the future are all highlights of that time. Some aspects of pregnancy are not so pleasant, such as heartburn, extra weight gain and sleep disturbances. Getting comfortable during sleep can be near impossible when you are pregnant. Your larger belly can be difficult to position. Another common and dangerous condition is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is a common breathing disorder marked by heavy snoring, pauses in breathing, gasping for air and daytime sleepiness. Other factors in OSA include morning headaches, a large neck, being overweight and high blood pressure. Pregnant women at risk for developing OSA are those who are already overweight or obese, or who have gained excessive weight while pregnant. The extra weight around your neck can cause your throat to close off during sleep.
Those with gestational diabetes or high blood pressure are at higher risk as are those with allergies and nasal congestion commonly caused by higher estrogen levels of pregnancy. OSA causes lowered oxygen levels and increased inflammatory processes during sleep. The associated risks of having untreated OSA during pregnancy include gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia. These conditions are very dangerous for mum and baby. Mums with sleep apnea are three times more likely to have a caesarean section, have smaller babies that are more likely to be admitted to the Neonatal ICU for breathing problems. You most likely will not notice that you are stopping breathing at night, but your bed partner will notice increased snoring and even cessations in breathing at times. You may feel more tired during the day and even doze off at times. If you think you have sleep apnea, or having started snoring since being pregnant and especially if you have high
blood pressure, discuss this with your doctor. You should be tested. This can be done in the sleep lab, or done in your home with a simple device. Sleep apnea can be treated very effectively to keep you breathing through the night for you and your baby. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the gold standard of treatment. You wear a little mask over your nose and it blows fresh air in while you sleep to keep your throat opened. Be sure to get this looked after as soon as you suspect there may be a problem. You want your pregnancy to be a joyous and healthy as it possibly can be for you and your baby. 0038 Angie Cummings, BSc RRT, Sussex Sleep Clinic

Many people don’t realize this but each Benjamin Moore store is independent and privately owned. Jacqueline MacKinnon and her husband Ian purchased the Benjamin Moore store in Quispamsis in 2011. When you support this store in the Valley you are supporting a local family business. It was always their dream to be in business for themselves but it had to be the “right” business – products they could be proud of and something that allowed them to be a contributing part of their community. Benjamin Moore fulfilled both those requirements offering the only true line of VOC paints (even after tint is added) and providing a platform for them to employ and support others. The store currently employs two full time and two part time staff. Jo-anne, Meg, Laura and Mark are invaluable to the success of the business. They are constantly building their knowledge of the Benjamin Moore product lines as well as Hunter Douglas and Shade-o- matic window treatments. You can be sure you’re getting the best products and the best advise from this crew! This year marks the fifth anniversary for this team and they continue to be more and more successful every year. Keep an eye out for details of their anniversary celebration in May!
