“MISSING??� The other day, I needed to move my truck and put it back in my tractor and truck shed. Now a little bit of history... For several years now, my truck radio has been stuck on the AM dial, with just one channel to listen to. So every time that I start up the old truck, I now get country and western music. Not really my first pick but with less than a thousand kilometers per year that I drive it, I can handle just about anything. So, I crank over the engine and music is playing but I am not paying attention, but then as I am approaching the shed I suddenly hear loud and clear “She thinks my tractor's sexy�. Holy Smokes, I nearly run into the shed. I finally get the ole truck parked safely and listen for another few moments. “She thinks my tractor's sexy It really turns her on She's always starin' at me While I'm chuggin' along� Finally, the woman of my dreams!! What have I been missing all of this time, this music is really talking to me. Performed by Kenny Chesney, who I have never heard of before, someone has finally written a song about the great, previously unsung tractor driver. Unfairly, songs heralding long haul truckers are written by the hundreds. In my whole life, the only other tractor song that I can ever recall was Murray McLauchlin’s “Farmer’s Song� and it’s probably thirty years old by now. “Dusty old farmer out working your fields Hanging down over your tractor wheels The sun beatin' down turns the red paint to orange And rusty old patches of steel There's no farmer songs on that car radio Just cowboys, truck drivers and pain� It is time for the injustice to end. POND PREPARATION… GOOD HOMES FOR FRIENDLY FROGS As the owners of private swimming pools prepare for winter there’s also a need for gardeners who have ponds to do a bit of preparation for next spring. By this time most of us have a hard time seeing the water at all since it will be covered with duck weed; along with this, the likelihood is that the other plant life will have increased by leaps and bounds. Since frogs and toads enjoy the companionship of their mates in the springtime, NOW is the best time to do a clean up avoiding needless disturbance to their amorous interludes. If you have beneficial inhabitants such as water snails, it’s best to take a rake and scoop up all the leaves, duck weed etc. and allow it to drain into the pond by dumping it on a handy rock; this allows the good chaps to slither back in. If your pond is merely full of unwanted detritus, then a leaky bucket is an ideal place to dump the leaves and gunge, allowing the water to trickle back into the pond and giving you some great content to deposit in your compost heap. The most important next step is to reduce dramatically the volume of water plants, ideally the pond should have two thirds of it’s surface free from vegetation, the best method for dividing well established plant life is to saw through the tough roots (Japanese curved saws are ideal). This year has seen an abundance of frogs which are hugely beneficial for us, scoffing great quantities of unwelcome baddies and allowing us respite from constantly slapping mosquitoes. There are so many ‘Fall jobs’ to accomplish and perhaps the most important is to weed thoroughly and then turn the soil about six to eight inches deep, leaving it for a week and repeating the process. This places the unwelcome bugs, beetles and grubs on the surface and they are then nobbled by the frost or eaten by the birds. Lady bugs have been making their way into their hibernation sites over the last few weeks and since birds don’t seem to fancy them, they will not be harmed. This is also the best time for spreading compost, fertilizers if needed, it allows the additions to blend in with the soil; the deformities in root crops can often be traced to good things that are used too close to planting time, as long as they are well distributed by a good forking in now, next year’s crops will start with a huge advantage over those plots amended in the spring. As the leaves begin to fall a great deal of work can be skipped by mowing over them and the grass at the same time, the chopped up result can be left on the lawn; any thick piles of leaves will lend assistance to the compost heap and can be scooped up and used as mulch around, but not on top of, perennials. The major exception would be the German or Bearded Iris that would prefer to be surrounded by compost, wet leaves are the very ritziest conditions for the Iris Borer to flourish in - to be avoided at all cost! Baton Explosion Inc offers the following classes at three locations; KV/Rothesay - Wednesdays; East Saint John - Fridays; French Village - Saturdays. All baton coaches are CBTF Level 2 Certified and M1 Judges. “Hop, Jump and Run” Baton Twirling Class is specifically designed for students age two to four. This class is an introduction to baton twirling. Basic baton twirling, eye-hand co-ordination, rhythm, timing and socialization skills are developed with this 45 minute class. BIG ROTHESAY READ - BOOK ANNOUNCED The Big Rothesay Read has been officially launched, with the public unveiling of this Fall’s selected book title: The Freedom Writers Diary. Close to a thousand resident readers, including Rothesay Deputy Mayor Nancy Grant, Councillors, corporate sponsors, residents, and students of Rothesay High School, were present to hear the upbeat announcement. The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them, is a non-fiction 1999 book written by The Freedom Writers – a group of students from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, and their teacher, Erin Gruwell. It is the basis of the 2007 movie “Freedom Writers”, starring Hilary Swank. The Freedom Writers Diary is made up of journals that Erin Gruwell told her students to write about the troubles of their past, present and future. The impetus for the project was to bring to light racial tolerance and she began the journey by having her class read The Diary of Anne Frank and Zlata’s Diary: A Child’s Life in Sarajevo. But the journals quickly evolved into much more. Helping the students put their thoughts about their very private lives on paper, allowed them to better understand one another, their differences, their similarities, their strife, sorrow and ultimately their dreams. Following the graduation of Ms. Gruwell’s entire class, The Freedom Writers Foundation was formed, and continues with exercises and philosophies similar to those used in the original class, and tracks the progress of the original and continuing classes. Original Freedom Writer, Tiffony Jacobs, will be coming to Rothesay on Wednesday, October 30 for two public talks at RHS: 11:00am and 7:00pm. There will be a free public screening of the Freedom Writers blockbuster movie at RHS on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:00pm; and Thursday, October 17 there will be a “lunch & listen” talk on journaling, at Shadow Lawn Inn at noon. In addition to a wide variety of new and used goods at the auction table (everything from gift certificates to produce), there is also the popular Belleisle Boutique. While the auction is ongoing in the theatre, you're welcome to browse the boutique (located in the school's gymnasium) for everything from clothing and toys to books and crafts. The auction also features a silent auction, home baking, 50/50 draws, crafts, raffle draw and canteen services. For supper pizza, desserts, home baked beans, brown bread, etc., will be available for purchase in the cafeteria. The week of the auction, up to and including the evening of October 17, donations of new and used good quality clothing, furniture and household items will be accepted at the high school. Please note that sofas, appliances and televisions cannot be accepted because of the large tipping fees associated with these unsold items. Thanks to the generosity of our area businesses, volunteers and supporters, this is the longest running auction fundraiser of its kind in New Brunswick. ROTHESAY REGIONAL POLICE NEWS I’ve had many questions lately about how someone can prevent becoming a victim of a break and enter. There are some very easy things we can do to make our home less vulnerable to thieves. Thieves are drawn to places they can hide. If your home has tall trees or large shrubs in front of it, criminals can hide behind them while assessing how they are going to break into your home. By trimming shrubs and bushes to a manageable height and cutting tree limbs away from the front of your house, it can discourage someone from using them to hide or gain entry into your home. Investing in timers for indoor lights gives the appearance that you are home and criminals don’t want to take a chance someone may still be there. Also having a TV or radio playing just loud enough that it can be heard at the door may fool someone into
thinking you are home when you are not. This is good for short absences. If you are going away for a long period of time you should contact the newspaper and inform them to stop delivery. Nothing says “No one’s home� like a pile of newspapers at the edge of a driveway. Have someone mow your lawn or plow the driveway regularly so it looks like someone is keeping up with the house work. Finally, please refrain from announcing you are going away for an extended period of time on social media sites. It’s easier than you think for someone to find you on these sites and track down your address. Only close family or friends should know you’re going away so they can check your house for you. Bill Randles, husband of the late Hazel (Darrah) Randles, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on October 2, 2013, at the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre. Born in East Riverside-Kingshurst on December 20, 1930, he was a son of the late William and Mary (Warman) Randles. An auto mechanic by trade, Bill operated an Esso service station in the North end of Saint John for 15 years and continued to work as a mechanic until his retirement in 1999. He and his wife Hazel resided in Red Head for several years, and later in Nauwigewauk and Quispamsis. Bill loved to golf and could be found on the course any morning enjoying a game with his good friends John Steele, John Marr and Dr. Jack Waite. He was a long-time member of the Riverside Golf and Country Club, the Nauwigewauk Darlings Seniors Club, and prior to moving to the Dr. V.A. Snow Centre, attended Quispamsis United Church. Bill played hockey in his youth and later was a coach in the East-West Suburban Hockey League. He was a loyal Boston Bruins fan and never gave up trying to convert his Montreal Canadiens son-in-law, Paul. He is survived by his daughter, Janet Randles (Paul Owen) of Hampton, son Tim (Nadine) of Richmond BC, brother John Randles of Dartmouth NS, brothers-in-law Alex (Barb) Darrah of Long Creek, Bobby (Sharon) Darrah of Oromocto, Archie (Rita) Darrah and Johnnie Darrah of Chipman; sistersin-law Carrie (Ray) Vince, Quispamsis, Vera Protz, Marylou (Randy) Dickinson and Mary Darrah, both of Chipman, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Bill was pre-deceased by an infant daughter in 1963, his son William in 2001, as well as sisters Evelyn McPhee, Helen Norman, and Audrey Smith. Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis, visiting was held on Saturday October 4th and Sunday, October 5th from 2:00-4:00 and 7:009:00pm. The Funeral Service was held from Quispamsis United Church, 372 Hampton Road, on Monday at 1:00pm. Interment took place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Dr. V. A. On a beautiful sunny Sunday in September our whole family went apple picking, from senior to 5 month old. When our kids were younger Mike and I took them every year, as we are all apple lovers. I used to get 100 pounds of apples each fall, many of which became applesauce and went into the freezer, many more which were simply peeled and sliced and frozen to use all year for apple crisps, apple pies, more applesauce, apple muffins, apple pan-dowdy . . . apples, apples, apples! Lots of apples. This was of course, before we had the Jet. Jet loves apples. One fall he happened to get weighed at the vet shortly before and then right after apple season and he had gained 5 pounds! He scourers the ground beneath all of the old wild apple trees on the property in an effort to stay ahead of the deer and the porcupines. Judging by his satisfied expression, I judge he is in the lead. On the same weekend we went apple picking, I had noted there were only a half dozen apples left on a tree our daughter had given us a few years ago. Half an hour later I went outdoors to plant my daffodil bulbs and discovered Mr Jet with an apple leaf hanging off his face. A quick check revealed there was now only one apple on the tree! So . . . We ended up with a mere 90 pounds of apples after our trip to the orchard. And a big dog who loves apples. Since he is quite well-mannered, Jet will not take food off the counters, but anything on the floor is fair game. Which means the baskets of apples cannot sit on the floor and I now have 90 pounds of apples sitting on my counters and nowhere to work! I need to get eating to create some space . . .
