Message from the Dean

Carole Anderson, Ph.D. Dean

Dear Friends, I’m pleased to have this opportunity to tell you about some of the great strides and great changes we’ve made that are moving this College in some new and dynamic directions. As many of you know, President E. Gordon Gee has asked every college at Ohio State to create and implement plans that will help to move the university from “excellence to eminence.” We’re doing our part here in dentistry by asking our faculty, staff, and students to strive for higher standards of achievement, to be positive and pro-active in all they do, and to increase their productivity to help build what we’re calling a “high performance” culture that represents the best attitudes and attributes of the College of Dentistry. In addition to establishing a high performance culture, we’ve begun the implementation of a new, ambitious strategic plan for this College that includes dramatic changes in such areas as improving clinic operations to enhance revenues, expanding clinical and basic science research, cultivating outstanding faculty members, enriching educational programs that offer efficient, effective and consistent instruction, while also recruiting and retaining high-caliber staff and students. We continue to foster outreach and community-based education programs, while also increasing the diversity of our faculty, staff, and students. We’re also working to implement the recommendations made last year by the external review committee, as well as adopting and applying the directives from the self-study report we completed in 2009. All of these goals represent critical milestones that this College must accomplish over the next five years, but we’ve already made substantial progress, and we’re continuing our efforts to meet these ambitious goals. As dean of this College, I’m very proud to be a part of this institution and all it has to offer. With its history of educational excellence and a future that’s filled with unlimited possibilities, this College and its traditions represent something that is truly great. The College of Dentistry is known for its outstanding faculty members, staff, and students, but we’re also privileged to have the best and most loyal alumni and friends. Your ongoing support is essential, and your contributions and involvement are vital in moving us forward with these new initiatives that ensure our continued progress, our success, and our commitment to excellence in all we do! Sincerely,

Carole Anderson Dean, College of Dentistry

Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, I’d like to thank you for spending some time with us as you read this magazine that is filled with highlights of the achievements made by dentistry’s faculty, staff, students, and alumni. As you’ll see in our feature stories, the College is changing and expanding in many important ways, and those changes include some new and exciting communications initiatives. In 2008, we created the College’s first-ever electronic newsletter, The College of Dentistry News. Distributed via e-mail to faculty, staff, students, and 4000 alumni, this free monthly publication offers updates on events, honors, awards, and other great news in the College. At the same time, we created a cost-effective electronic marketing package that gets the word out about our Continuing Education (CE) courses. By delivering CE information directly to your e-mail inbox, we keep you updated with the latest course offerings that include links to full course descriptions and provide the option of easy registration online. While electronic communications have given us some new ways to stay in touch with friends, alumni, and other constituents, we have also kept our focus on traditional publications and news venues that reach most Ohioans. In 2008 and 2009, two news items about the H.O.M.E. Coach mobile dental clinic and the Veler family’s multimillion-dollar estate gift were featured in newspapers and on local TV stations throughout the state, reaching audiences of about 500,000 viewers.

Other communications that showcased the College and its programs have included local television interviews with faculty members, and articles published in Columbus’ journals, such as Business First. We also ventured into the world of radio broadcasting with Dean Anderson’s guest appearance on the Columbus-based radio talk show, “Dentally Speaking,” which reaches an estimated radio audience of one million. Many of these items and more are included in this publication, and we hope you enjoy reading about our talented faculty, staff, students, and alumni whom we’re proud to call Buckeyes! We are always looking for ways to improve, and we welcome your feedback. Please let us know if there are other items you would like to read more about in future publications. Feel free to send an e-mail to Kennedy.408@osu.edu with your comments and suggestions. Best wishes!

In May and November (2009), Dean Anderson held two town hall meetings that were attended by dentistry’s faculty, staff, and students. Topics for discussion included current and future goals for bringing the College into the top ten ranking of schools of dentistry nationwide, as well as creating a positive, productive, “high class’ status. This is already a strong, well-respected organization, and we’re going to focus now on moving to an even higher level of achievement and success.” Anderson has held academic appointments at Ohio State as a professor in the College of Medicine, and as a professor in the College of Nursing. Prior to joining Ohio State’s faculty in 1986, she served as associate dean in the School of Nursing at the University of Rochester, and she was a faculty member and division chair at the University of Colorado’s School of Nursing. She received her B.S. in nursing, an M.S. in psychiatric nursing, and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado. Throughout her distinguished career as a professor and administrator in the health sciences at Ohio State, Anderson has managed the restructuring of multi-million dollar budgets, and she has affected university-wide policies in myriad ways, including her service as the cochair of the University’s Council on Diversity. Commenting on her appointment as dean of the College of Dentistry, Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee said, “Carole Anderson has been successful in an array of executive-level leadership positions at this University, and she is one of the premier administrators at Ohio State. The College is in very capable hands with her as dean.” n

Dentistry and Delta Dental Keep H.O.M.E. Coach Rolling One of the College of Dentistry’s slogans is “great smiles begin here,” and thanks to the work done by the College’s mobile dental clinic, called the “Dental H.O.M.E. Coach,” great smiles really do begin when the Dental H.O.M.E. Coach visits Columbus area elementary schools to provide dental care to the community’s children in need. Launched in 2005, the Dental H.O.M.E. Coach was originally funded by a donation from the Columbusbased Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. That support enabled the Dental H.O.M.E. Coach to continue its works through 2008. When the need for additional funding arose, that need was met by a donation of $450,000 from the Delta Dental Foundation of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. The gift was officially presented to the H.O.M.E. Coach on May 9, 2009 at the College of Dentistry’s Annual Post College Assembly, but the celebration of that gift took place on August 28th at a “back-to-school” event at Columbus’ Weinland Park Elementary School. Ohio State’s President E. Gordon Gee attended the celebration, along with the College of Dentistry’s Dean Carole Anderson, Superintendent of Columbus City Schools Gene Harris, and Delta Dental of Ohio’s Marketing President Michael Clark. President Gee thanked the Delta Dental Foundation, saying, “We appreciate this generous donation to the College of Dentistry’s H.O.M.E. Coach, which represents a great example of Ohio State’s service to the local community.” Gee added, “The University’s mission is to educate and to serveand that service includes the kind of work that’s being done by this mobile dental clinic, which is improving peoples’ lives.” Gee also thanked the College of Dentistry’s faculty and students who work with the H.O.M.E. Coach to provide dental care — and genuine caring — to Columbus’ children in need. Michael Clark echoed Gee’s praise of the work done by the Dental H.O.M.E. Coach and the College of Dentistry’s faculty, staff and students who are part of the outreach initiative. “An important part of Delta Dental’s mission is to support our colleges of dentistry and the good work they do,” Clark said. “Here in Columbus and throughout Ohio we’ve supported programs that improve the oral health of underserved children, and the H.O.M.E. Coach is a prime example of our continuing commitment to this effort.” n

Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee attended the Delta Dental “back-to-school” event with Dean Carole Anderson, local dignitaries, and students from Columbus’ Weinland Park Elementary School. Dr. Canise Bean spoke to local reporters about the dental H.O.M.E. Coach outreach program and its impact on children in the Columbus community.

The dental H.O.M.E. Coach is a fully-equipped mobile dental clinic that serves approximately 2000 children in Franklin County annually.

College Receives Multi-Million Dollar Estate Gift In the summer of 2009, the College of Dentistry received a gift of approximately $3 million to support scholarships for students. The largest single gift in the College’s history, the donation came from the estate of the late Dr. Richard C. Veler and his wife, Betty G. Veler, both of whom were lifelong supporters of the university. Dr. Veler, a 1946 College of Dentistry graduate whose practice was in Toledo, Ohio, began his philanthropy to Ohio State with a gift of $10 in 1948. He and his wife later donated the funds that created the Richard C. Veler, D.D.S. and Betty G. Veler Scholarship endowment that provides financial support for dentistry students who demonstrate “merit, need, and outstanding moral and ethical character.” The Velers’ multi-million dollar gift will support and expand their existing scholarship endowment. Commenting on the Velers’ loyalty to Ohio State and the College of Dentistry, estate trustee and longtime family friend Mr.

Frederick Lamb said, “I knew Betty and Richard Veler for more than 40 years, and it was always their intent to leave their estate to the university. They both felt they’d had a wonderful life because of the education Richard received from the College of Dentistry, and they really wanted to give something back.” Dean Carole Anderson expressed her thanks for this gift that will meet a vital need. “This donation is extraordinary not only because it’s the largest single gift in the history of the College, but also because it’s a gift that’s designated for something we’re in dire need of,” Anderson said. “Our dentistry students pay some of the highest tuition fees in the medical profession, and this gift will help us recruit outstanding new students, while also supporting the excellent students we have now who need financial help to complete their education and begin their careers as dental professionals.” “Throughout their lives, the Velers were remarkably generous with the university,” said Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee. “This latest gift from their estate will enable future generations of talented young people to pursue their dreams and to earn their degrees at Ohio State. I can think of no more selfless action, and I am deeply grateful.” n

The William J. Meyers Endowed Chair in Endodontics College of Dentistry Professor Emeritus William J. Meyers has been recognized with an endowed chair named in his honor. Dean Carole Anderson made the official announcement of the William J. Meyers Endowed Chair in Endodontics, which will support a distinguished endodontic educator and researcher. A longtime faculty member and administrator in the Division of Endodontics, Dr. Meyers joined the College of Dentistry in 1976, providing outstanding leadership as the Endodontic Division Chair from 1976 to 1995. Throughout his distinguished career, Meyers has been honored with a number of prestigious awards, including the (2005) I.B. Bender Lifetime Educator Award from the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. Meyers has also served as president of the Columbus Dental Society and he is a past president of the Ohio Association of Endodontists. Still a part-time faculty member in the Division of Endodontics, Dr. Meyers said of the endowed chair named in his honor, “This is great – not because I’m great in any way, but because this endowed chair will be a wonderful thing for the Division of Endodontics.” Meyers added, “I’d like to thank everyone who made a contribution that helped to accomplish this goal. Your efforts and your generosity are amazing and I’m very honored.” n 10

Ohio State Smile Research Published in JADA College of Dentistry professors Stephen Rosenstiel and Henry Fields have conducted a research study that was featured in the prestigious Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA). The results of the survey were published in a JADA article titled, “Esthetic Fields and Smile Characteristics from the Layperson’s Perspective: A Computer-Based Survey Study.” Dr. Fields, a former president of the Ohio Dental Association (ODA) and the current chairman of the College of Dentistry’s Division of Orthodontics, partnered with Dr. Rosenstiel, a professor in the Division of Restorative and Prosthetic Dentistry at OSU, to conduct a groundbreaking study in esthetic smile research. Working with Ohio State orthodontics residents A.J. Ker and Richard Chan, and Professor Emeritus Mike Beck, Drs. Rosenstiel and Fields surveyed 243 individuals from Ohio, Massachusetts, and Washington, using an innovative survey method that allowed participants to view images of various smiles, and to manipulate those images on a laptop screen to create what they considered the “perfect” smile. Commenting on this research, Fields said, “Dentists have always known that crooked, crowded, Rosenstiel and protruding teeth are esthetically undesirable, but we’ve learned from this study that the general population is more tolerant of certain flaws than we expected -- and they’re slightly less tolerant of others.” Although esthetic smile research has been ongoing for many decades, what is new about this research is that Fields and Rosenstiel have studied the factors that make up the perfect smile, and they can pinpoint right down to the millimeter what survey participants considered attractive or unattractive in an array of smile characteristics. Asked about the significance of this research and its impact on patients and dentists, Fields and Rosenstiel agreed that these findings will help clinicians to refine their treatment methods so their patients can get a smile they consider to be truly beautiful. n

Jacki Mays Joins NIH Research Team When Jacki (Wiesehan) Mays arrived at the College of Dentistry in 2002, she was looking forward to a challenging D.D.S. program that would move her on to the next phase of her career as a dental professional. While preparing to work on one advanced degree, she could never have anticipated being recruited into a dual Ph.D. and D.D.S. program that would lead to a job working at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on a team with two of the most renowned immunologists in the nation. “I’m passionate about science,” Mays said, “and I fell in love with research after I began working on an immunology and T-cell project when I was an undergraduate at Valparaiso University.” As a chemistry and biology major at Valparaiso, Mays received an education that prepared her well for the immunology research that has become her vocation. Shortly after she entered the D.D.S. program here at Ohio State, Dr. John Sheridan, Associate Dean of Research and professor of oral biology, suggested that she pursue combined Ph.D. and D.D.S. degrees as part of the College’s Comprehensive Training in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (CTOC) program. “Jacki’s talents were evident very early on,” Sheridan said, “so I recruited her to join this program, knowing she had what it takes to complete both the Ph.D. in oral biology and the doctor of dental surgery degrees.” The decision to embark on two professional degrees simultaneously meant a seven-year commitment to a graduate program, as well as a course of study that included cutting-edge research. Although Mays admitted this program was a challenging one, she said it was worth the effort in every respect. “My experience here at Ohio State has been absolutely fantastic. I’ve loved the work, and I know these combined degrees will let me do what I want to do with my life and my career.” In preparation for the research career she’s always known was right for her, Mays worked with Dr. Sheridan in his laboratory that focuses on research in virology, immunology and stress biology. Mays decided to specialize again in immunological research—but this time, with an emphasis on determining how stress affects the immune system and the immune response. Mays’ research with Sheridan focused on the role of stress-induced regulation of the immune system, and their findings have shown that controlled social stress can stimulate enhanced immunological activity in mice that are subsequently exposed to a microbial infection. As a result of this research and a number of related publications, Mays was offered a post-doctoral research position at the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland, working with Drs. Jack Bennink and Jonathan Yewdell, two of the NIH’s nationally renowned immunologists. “As a member of the team at the NIH, Jacki joins other researchers at one of the best labs in the country, working with two of the most respected immunologists in the U.S.,” Sheridan said., “That’s quite a success story—for Jacki, for this dual degree program, and for Ohio State.” n

Comprehensive Training in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (CTOC) Universities across the nation are experiencing an ongoing shortage in oral health researchers. In an effort to change this trend, The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research has invested more than three million dollars in CTOC programs nationwide. In addition to financial support, this infusion of funding provides the opportunity for excellent training in a variety of careers. The goal of the CTOC program at Ohio State’s College of Dentistry is to move dentistry into the future through the recruitment and training of highly qualified and motivated candidates in oral health research. The CTOC program offers both a combined D.D.S. and Ph.D. program. 26

Head Start Screenings Connect The College of Dentistry’s Doctor of Dental Surgery students get hands-on experience as they give dental screenings and fluoride treatments to children in Columbus’ Head Start program. Designed to promote health education, “school readiness,” and social services for children in lowincome families, the Head Start dental screenings have been a collaborative outreach and education project since 2005. “All first-year dental students participate in these screenings,” said Hilary Soller, a clinical associate professor who coordinates the screenings for the College of Dentistry. “This experience helps to keep students connected with their desire to become health care professionals, and it’s an enjoyable break from the heavy schedule of classroom and laboratory courses.” Trained specifically for these pediatric screening events, dental students perform the screenings and provide varnish treatments under the supervision of clinical associate professor Janet Bolina. Other participants include local dentists who volunteer their time and

Dental Students and Local Community expertise as members of the Columbus Dental Society. Providing a much-needed service to the community, these Head Start screenings are a firsttime dental experience for many children from low-income families that have limited access to dental care. And for the dental students, this is often their first experience of working directly with pediatric patients. The impact of the screenings is significant. From October through November 2009, the College of Dentistry’s students screened 404 children and provided fluoride varnish treatments for more than half that number. As part of this hands-on educational and outreach experience, dental students are required to write summaries that serve as “reflections” on their work with the Head Start screening program, and most have a strong, positive reaction to the learning process that results from this direct interaction. One College of Dentistry student said, “I learned that I really enjoy working with children and that it gives me great satisfaction to help people. I felt that I got more out of this experience than the kids I was helping, because it boosted my confidence and reminded me why I chose this profession in the first place.” n

Dominican Republic A group of Ohio State’s College of Dentistry students brought a helping hand to those in need in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Students gave free dental treatment to members of the local community by performing restorations, removing decayed teeth, and providing cleaning and preventive care to 429 children and adults at an improvised clinic set up in a local church. A highlight of the trip was a visit by the students to a local orphanage where they were greeted by smiling children who wanted to play, talk, and just be held. Dentistry’s Faculty and Student Volunteers “Give Kids a Smile!” Dentistry students and faculty members joined together in 2009 for the 7th annual “Give Kids a Smile Day,” as part of a national initiative by the American Dental Association (ADA) to focus attention on untreated oral disease among children from low-income families. Ohio State’s student-planned effort helped children at Columbus’ Broadleigh Elementary School -- with the support of the College of Dentistry and the Ohio Dental Association (ODA). Sunny Pahouja, a College of Dentistry student and the Chapter President for the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), was key in planning this event. “It’s a great opportunity to give back because these kids don’t have a chance to receive dental care since their access to it is so limited,” Pahouja said. “It makes us feel good to get involved because we can use what we’ve learned as dental students.” About 250 children at Broadleigh received free dental services that included free dental exams, fluoride varnishes, oral health care products, and educational materials that explain the connection between good oral health and good health in general. The College of Dentistry’s Office of Community Education, directed by Dr. Canise Bean, plans to return to Broadleigh and address more complex dental needs that were identified during the exams. Some dental students volunteered to answer questions and to show children how to brush and floss their teeth. Tina Crist, the school nurse at Broadleigh, commented that teaching children in this age group is especially important. “These kids are losing their baby teeth and they’re growing new teeth now that will be there for the rest of their lives,” she said. “It’s so important to get that teaching when they come in so they can take care of their new teeth.” The day’s events ended with a burst of excitement as Brutus Buckeye appeared for a surprise visit and some play time with the children. Having spent the day getting oral health education and dental treatments, the children hugged and played with Brutus, their favorite Buckeye, who gave all of the children -- and the volunteers -- their biggest and best smile of the day. n

Dental Hygiene Students Help with “Project Compassion” The College of Dentistry’s members of the Student Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA) collected food items for Project Compassion, a non-profit organization that provides services to men, women, and children in central Ohio who are affected by HIV/AIDS. Working together throughout November and December of 2008, the College’s dental hygiene students filled 50 bags of groceries, and they purchased 15 fleece blankets to contribute to Project Compassion, which serves more than 100 HIV/AIDS clients in the Columbus area. n

Ohio Dental Association Gives Top Awards to Dentistry Alumni

Burns

Kelley

The College of Dentistry’s alumni have a history of dedication to the art and science of dentistry that was recognized at the 142nd annual session of the Ohio Dental Association (ODA). At the (2008) meeting and the reception that followed it, three College of Dentistry alumni were presented with top awards. Dr. Dennis A. Burns, a Columbus dentist whose undergraduate and D.D.S. degrees are from Ohio State, received the ODA’s Distinguished Dentist Award, which is the highest honor bestowed by the association. Expressing his gratitude for the Distinguished Dentist Award, Burns said, “To be able to join this list of really esteemed colleagues is a profound honor for me. I see this as a proud moment in my career.” Another outstanding College of Dentistry graduate who was recognized with an ODA award is Dr. Carole Kelley, the founder and president of the Heart of Gold Foundation, and the recipient of the ODA’s Marvin Fisk Humanitarian Award. As a 1980 graduate of the College of Dentistry, Kelley’s lifelong commitment to philanthropic endeavors inspired her to create the Heart of Gold Foundation, a charitable organization that receives local dentists’ scrap metal donations that can be turned into cash to support clinics and other organizations that offer dental care for underserved populations. As the recipient of the Marvin Fisk Humanitarian Award, Dr. Kelley expressed the hope that the award and the publicity surrounding it would call attention to the need for basic dental health care that organizations like the Heart of Gold Foundation help to provide. The third Ohio State alumnus who received an award from the ODA was Dr. Joel Weaver II, a graduate of the College of Dentistry’s class of 1972. Honored with the ODA’s Achievement Award that recognizes outstanding contributions to the dental profession. Weaver began his academic career when he earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree at Ohio Northern University. He continued his education by completing two advanced degrees from Ohio State--a D.D.S. degree in 1972, and a Ph.D. in pharmacology, which he received in 1976. A lifelong educator, Weaver says, “To have made a difference is ultimately the highest reward that anyone can receive.” n

College of Dentistry Alumni Pay It Forward The College of Dentistry has always relied on the generous support of its loyal friends and alumni. Throughout its history, the College has been the recipient of gifts both large and small -- all of which have a wide-reaching and positive impact. Funds from donations have been used to improve dentistry’s facilities, to provide student shcolarships, and to enrich the educational experience the College of Dentistry provides.

Dr. Edward Maag Screening Clinic Wacksman-Shrum Scholarship In February 2008, dentistry’s faculty, staff, students, members of the Dental Alumni Society Board of Governors, and other guests gathered in Postle Hall to celebrate the College’s firstever $1 million donation. Dr. Edward Maag (D.D.S. ‘56) and his wife Christine presented their generous gift that created funding for a renovation of the first floor screening clinic, which was renamed the Dr. Edward Maag Screening Clinic.

Dr. John Frye Contributes to Pre-Clinic Lab Fund Dr. John Frye (D.D.S. ‘05) and his brother, Dr. Bret Frye (D.D.S. ‘92), are the team that makes up the Frye Dental Group of Marietta, Ohio. In the spirit of paying forward and giving back, John Frye made a donation to the College of Dentistry’s PreClinic Lab Fund that earned him recognition from the President’s Club. John credits his brother, who is also a President’s Club member, and their dental practice staff for the success that has enabled him to give back to his alma mater. As one of the College’s youngest President’s Club members, Frye’s donation contributed to the ongoing renovations of the Pre-Clinic Lab facility that serves as dental students’ primary work space.

College of Dentistry alumna DeeDee (Shrum) Wacksman (B.S.D.H. ‘67) honored her father, the late Dr. Gene Shrum (D.D.S. ‘47) with a scholarship that recognizes his dedication to the practice of dentistry. After graduating from Ohio State, Dr. Shrum enjoyed a rewarding career that spanned decades, and he lived to see his daughter DeeDee graduate from the College’s dental hygiene program. Following in her father’s footsteps both as a dental professional and a lifelong learner, DeeDee (Shrum) Wacksman established the Wacksman-Shrum Dental Scholarship Fund that provides two scholarships each year-one for a D.D.S. student, and one for a dental hygiene student at Ohio State.

Lawrence Scholarship Dr. Scott Lawrence (D.D.S. ‘85) and his wife Jessica are helping to meet the dental health care needs of Ohioans through their gift of $50,000 that provides scholarship funding for students in underserved regions of the state. The Scott and Jessica Lawrence Scholarship Fund provides needbased support for College of Dentistry students from Appalachian counties in Ohio. “By giving to a worthy young student, we’re really just sharing the bounty that God has so generously given to us,” Dr. Lawrence said. “I realize we can’t single-handedly change a young doctor’s thinking, but I do believe we can demonstrate with our gift just how many blessings we have had in dentistry.” n

The Postle Family: Putting Students First and Helping Them Now! For some people, giving is just a way of life, and that tradition of giving -- and giving back -- has been a Postle family commitment for generations. It began with Dr. Wendell D. Postle, an Ohio State dentistry graduate who became the dean of the College of Dentistry in 1938. An innovative leader, Wendell Postle implemented several new programs for the College, and he created the first Post College Assembly, which offered continuing education courses for dentistry alumni. Because of his extraordinary dedication and success, the building that houses the College of Dentistry -- Postle Hall -- was named in Wendell’s honor in 1976.

Putting Students’ Needs First

Understanding the value and the costs of a dental Scholarship recipients Cole Bryant education inspired the Postle family to make donations that and Jonathan Draney (top left to right) have helped generations of dentistry students. Wendell and with Mrs. Margaret Postle and her son, Dr. Herb Postle. his wife Helen created the Wendell D. and Helen R. Postle Scholarship Fund to support students who need and deserve financial help. Wendell’s son Harry and his daughter-inlaw Margaret also gave funds to create the Harry H. and Coming from a family of Ohio State graduates, Herb Postle Margaret B. Helping Students Now

Postle scholarship recipients Cole Bryant and Jonathan Draney were among those students whose lives were changed by the Postle family’s generosity. “The scholarship lessened my dependence on loans so that my wife and I felt confident enough to purchase our first home,” Bryant said. “I’m very thankful for receiving the scholarship because it provided vital encouragement to become the best I can be, despite the difficulties of dental school.” Draney echoed that sentiment. “As a dental student with a wife and three small children, I’d hoped to avoid having too much debt when I finished school, and it’s always an enormous help for any student to have some scholarship money,” he said. “It means a great deal to us that there are dentistry alumni and other donors who are generous enough to lend support to those of us who needed it.” Margaret Postle agreed that giving back is vital for the future of the profession. “Dentistry students have all kinds of abilities, and scholarships give them an opportunity to use their talents and to achieve their dreams,” she said. “A lot of us wouldn’t be where we are now if we hadn’t been given help and an opportunity.” Because of their lifelong support of “Scholarships have an impact that’s greater than many people realize. As everyone knows, dental school is a pressing time financially and otherwise, and I’m grateful for all of the kindhearted people who take the time and make the effort to help out.” -- Matthew Lemke, scholarship recipient Ohio State’s dentistry students, the Postle family was featured on OSU’s “Students First, Students Now” web site, which showcased one of the university’s campus-wide scholarship initiatives that was introduced by President E. Gordon Gee in 2008. Thanking alumni and friends of Ohio State, like the Postle family whose support helps students start and finish their education at OSU, President Gee said, “Our profound commitment is to providing access to Ohio State’s excellent educational opportunities. Now more than ever, we must ensure that young people are able to pursue their dreams, earn a degree, and use their talents to enhance our economy, our state, and our world.” n

ANNUAL REPORT

ANNUAL REPORT Financial Summary: 2008-2009 Dear Friends and Alumni, In the current economic climate of budget cuts and constraints, the College of Dentistry, like other dental schools around the nation, must find ways to decrease expenses while increasing efficiency, productivity, and revenue to provide for future growth. These goals must be accomplished without sacrificing the quality of student services or the many resources available for learning. As we’ve done in the past, the College will meet its financial challenges with the help of faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who understand the importance of our primary mission, which is educating and training the next generation of oral health care providers. Your continued help enables us to look to the future with confidence, and we thank you for your past, present, and future generosity and support. Sincerely,

Darrell Young Executive Assistant Dean of Business and Administration

REVENUE

$16,000,000.00

Sources of Income: The College of Dentistry is supported by five main sources of revenue: state funding, tuition, revenue from the clinics, philanthropic support, and federal and private grants that support faculty members’ research projects. Revenue: Fiscal years 2008 and 2009 showed a decrease in philanthropic support and research dollars, while the College’s other sources of income remained steady or rose. Income from tuition increased from $10,858,000 in 2007 to $13,586,400 in 2008-09. Clinic revenues also rose significantly, showing an increase of $2,482,400 from 2007 to 2008-09. Expenses: Salaries and benefits remained steady at $25,174,700 in 2007, with only a slight rise to $25,534,673 in 2008-09. Other expenses showed significant increases throughout the last two fiscal years. The cost of supplies rose from $3,046,400 in 2007 to $6,043,800 in 2008-09, as did building maintenance and renovation costs, which rose from $1,344,300 in 2007 to $2,164,800 in 2008-09. Gifts: Throughout the last two years, the generous support of our friends and alumni has paid for many improvements in the College. Gifts to the Pre-Clinic Laboratory Fund brought about some much-needed renovations in the area known as “the Pits,” while other gifts to the Leadership Fund resulted in the renovation of two patient waiting areas that now offer new lighting, comfortable seating, and improved access to patient services. n
